There are five days across the year called Sekku/Sechiku . Each announces the change of the season in the traditional Japanese calendar. One of these is Momo no Sekku (Girl s Day) . It is also called Joushi which is the Chinese name for this day. It is said that this event was first celebrated by aristocrats during the Heian period (8th Century). It began as a poetry reading festival to banish bad luck and dirt, then at some point, paper dolls were introduced, on which participants would write down their own bad luck, then place on the river or

in the sea as a symbol of cleansing and a prayer for health and prosperity. This gradually began to be celebrated as Girl s Day, probably because of the presence of the dolls. The cherry blossom look-alike peach blossoms are widely associated with this event. The name Momo means peach. It is said that peaches in Chinese medicine have the power to cure a chill and help restore youth to women.  日本には節供が 5 回あり、そのひとつが桃の節供で

in Spring Japan

Esra Krabbe Editor, WAttention Tokyo A Dutch Japanophile based in Japan since 2004. Esra is integrated in Japan so deeply that he partly considers himself Japanese. Of course he also has a love for the country’s iconic f lower, sakura. Let’s see what kind of Ohanami spots he has in store for you!

To be quite honest with you, I’m not really a flower guy, but for sakura ( 桜 ; Cherry blossom), I make an exception, and this can be said for any Japanese. Sakura is a national thing that goes beyond such personal preferences; it is truly a flower everyone loves. Ever y year, during the blossom period, I can’t help but wonder what is so special about them, and I always come to the same conclusion: it’s their simplicity. Myriads of trees all with the same bright pink blossom give the entire country a new color and atmosphere. Their undeniable presence is made even stronger due to their short lives. Imagine looking at the sky as sakura petals fall towards the ground like flakes of pink snow, forming a pink carpet of elegance before your very eyes. This intense but ephemeral beauty symbolizes the way the Japanese look at nature and life itself. Everything is fragile, inconstant, and transient and therefore should be appreciated and enjoyed to the utmost. Therefore, we will introduce you to some of the best Ohanami ( お花見 ; Flower viewing, a traditional Japanese custom.) spots throughout the whole country.

There are hundreds of different sorts of sakura, but these four are most commonly seen at Japan’s Ohanami spots. At some areas, you can see all of them together, while other places are dedicated to only one type. Here’s a short lecture for you to show off your knowledge during your trip!

TOKYO OHANAMI SPOTS RECOMMENDED BY DUTCH TOKYOITE

For the Japanese, sakura is something they grow up with. I have been living in Japan since I was 16, and while my childhood might have been sakura-less, I still feel that these beautiful spring blossoms have greatly influenced my life, and more importantly, left me with wonderful memories. Here follows a short, personal sakura memoir to introduce you to Japan’s fantastic flower in a more personal fashion.

As a freshman, I lived in a cozy little apartment a 30 minute walk from Chofu, a typical Tokyo suburb. While it had a pleasant environment, I wasn't aware of the Jindai Temple. One of Tokyo’s oldest temples and home to several handmade soba restaurants, a specialty of the area. The lined up trees that form a sakura tunnel along the Jindaiji-dori Avenue and the Jindai Botanical Garden next to the temple with many different sorts of sakura continue to give me a youthful feeling even more than 10 years later.

The Sotobori (outer moat) Park is more of a river than a park, and goes on along the JR Chuo line for more than 2 kilometers from Yotsuya Station, passing my university in Ichigaya and going on all the way to Iidabashi station. Walking along this river with countless sakura trees lined up in full blossom wearing the first suit of my life, and then 4 years later again with the same suit, but with a bachelor diploma in my hands marked the beginning and end of an important part of my life.

The Japanese society can be hierarchic, especially so in martial arts culture. When I started working as a Karate instructor in Tokyo after graduation, my first job was preparing a blue plastic groundsheet and taking it to the Inokashira Park in the afternoon to secure a prime spot for my seniors to drink in the evening. Waiting for the sun to set didn’t bother me at all though, as I got enthralled by the pink paradise with happy couples rowing on swan boats in its central pond surrounded by countless sakura.

Here, my current wife and I went on our first date. It was after the peak of the blossom period, and most of the leaves were already floating in the air, but that made our date all the more romantic, since the river was coated in pink by leaves that had fallen on its surface. And while looking down at this fairy-tale like river with her next to me, I realized that this magical flower was guiding me to a new phase of my life once again.

It is as if the absence of other sakura trees only make this grand “Isshingyo no Ozakura” tree more imposing, and the contrast it creates with the surrounding rapeseed fields distinguishes this destination from the many other Ohanami spots, making it a truly unique experience well worth your visit.

The sakura lined up along the Sando (a street leading to a temple or shrine) that brings you to the Daigoji temple form a “sakura tunnel” that creates a beautiful umbrella of pink above one's head. The Daigoji temple also hosts the “Big 4” types of Sakura (Pg 2). The weeping sakura against the temple’s 5-storied pagoda in the back is a natural masterpiece of Kyoto.

For those who can’t wait to be surrounded by Japan’s sakura, they will blossom earlier at Nakijin Castle compared to other parts of Japan and can be enjoyed from the end of January to mid-February. Let these “Kanhizakura (寒緋桜)” paths escort you to the relics of this 600 year old castle, a mystic world heritage surrounded by Okinawa’s stunning nature.

UNIQUE DAYTIME OHANAMI 日本SPOTS THROUGHOUT JAPAN

There is a reason that I am introducing these six daytime spots out of all the glorious blooms Japan’s spring has to offer. These spots are not just beautiful; their contrast with the environment makes for something special and unique. From the juxtaposition with modern skyscrapers to the harmony with traditional temples, these Ohanami spots leave you with the feeling that you have not just seen the famous sakura, but caught a fleeting glimpse into the Japanese culture as a whole. ❻ Nagatoro town, Saitama

❺ Osaka Castle, Osaka

❻ Nagatoro town,

How can something be more Japanese than the imposing Mount Fuji together with beautiful sakura blossoms? Add a stunning blue lake to that and you have one of the most impressive nature panoramas anywhere in the world to be found.

Few spots complement sakura as well as the majestic castle of Osaka. This historical site with Osaka’s urban skyscrapers in the back makes for an impressive vision of the old and new that shines all the more when covered in pink by a myriad of bright sakura.

The picturesque riverside town of Nagatoro is one big Ohanami Spot with more than 3,000 sakura trees to overwhelm you. Be sure to stroll the Kita Sakura Dori Avenue and the Minami Sakura Dori Avenue with sakura trees lining for respectively 1.5 and 4 kilometers, creating seemingly endless sakura tunnels.

UNFORGETTABLE YOZAKURA 夜 SPOTS 桜

Since the Edo period, many have believe that the vibrant colors of sakura give them a different allure when viewed at night. As such, yozakura (night sakura viewing) has been a common practice in Japan. These four spectacular spots bring the idea of yozakura to a whole new level, from modern illumination techniques, to more classic methods such as using lanterns to create a mystical atmosphere. Be entranced by the moonlit beauty of the sakura!

❶Takada Park, Niigata

❶ Takada Park, Niigata

❷ Kenroku Garden, Ishikawa

The essence of Takada Park’s night sakura beauty is not only in the stunning amount of more than three thousand Sakura trees blossoming altogether, but just as much in the way they are enlightened. Two thousand Japanese lanterns distinguish the site from often-seen modern illumination and create a traditional feeling that perfectly matches this ancient castle surrounded by a moat with watchtowers on each corner.

Officially recognized as one of Japan’s three most iconic gardens, visiting the Kenroku Garden in Kanazawa, Ishikawa prefecture is a must, especially during the sakura blossom period. The garden houses many sorts of sakura, from the standard Someiyoshino to the rare Kikuzakura, with about 300 petals on each bloom. In early April, the garden will be lit up and is free to enter, making it easier to enjoy the cultural beauty of Kanazawa.

This four hundred year old castle is surrounded by more than two thousand sakura trees of more than fifty sorts, and will be illuminated together with the castle itself until 10pm during the blossom period. The “sakura tunnel” these blossoms create at the western moat are of an unparalleled scale, which makes crossing the traditional Japanese red colored bridge alone a worthy experience.

Hakodate’s Goryokaku, a 19th century fortress which now functions as a park, is one of Hokkaido's major Ohanami spots with a magnificent panoramic view. The moat’s French inspired design matches the sakura just as well as it’s more traditional Japanese counterparts but will attract you in a different way. Imoko & Kobutaro

Jaga Pokkuru A must-buy souvenir in Hokkaido Made out of 100% Hokkaido-grown potatoes, Jaga Pokkuru is produced at Chitose factory in Hokkaido and uses Saroma Lake baked salt to enhance the flavor. The crunchy texture is created by an original method and the secret of the potatoes’ delicious taste is none other than that the potatoes used are grown in Hokkaido, where temperatures swing greatly between day and night. The name “Jaga Pokkuru” comes from the name of a legendary fairy called Koropokkuru, which means “the people under butterburs” in Ainu, the language of Hokkaido’s indigenous people.

WHAT'S DON? Donburi or Donburi Bachi ( 丼 / 丼鉢 ), also known as Don ( 丼 ), literally means ‘bowl’ in Japanese. Other choices include the Oyako don, a classic crowd pleaser with its charcoal-roasted chicken topped with fresh eggs on fluffy rice. WAttention Singapore

R

amen fans can expect something new and exciting to feast upon as Hakata Ikkousha launches its series of premium ramen using a new medium-thickness noodle to perfectly complement every dish. For fans of strong flavors, the Bonito Ramen is a delicious new choice! Choose from a rich chicken & pork broth at CHIJMES, or a pork broth at Tanjong Pagar, enriched by the natural taste of bonito boiled in to create a harmonious blend of different tastes. The Soy Sauce Ramen is a spin on the classic Tokyo-style Shoyu with its chicken & pork soup accompanied by wavy noodles that absorb the broth readily. This results in a dish that is lighter, yet uncompromising on the palate. Diners also have a chance to try an authentic Tsukemen, a popular variation of ramen in Japan

comprised of noodles that are dipped into a thick broth. Tsukemen Hanadori (CHIJMES) gives you a dipping broth that blends chicken and bonito stock with chicken oil for a savory sensation. Tsukemen Hanadori 2 (Tanjong Pagar) features the same broth, but with an alternative dried sardine oil for a deliciously strong concoction. The CHIJMES outlet offers an exclusive Chanpon Ramen. With over 7 different kinds of vegetables including cabbage, peas and black fungus, it is the ideal meal for the health-conscious. These new dishes are served after 3pm on weekdays and all day on weekends. Made in very limited quantities, ramen-connoisseurs should try them soon! The premium menu is available now at CHIJMES and coming to Tanjong Pagar this March.

KAWAII Vol. BENTO 1 SERIES 1.

Wrap and shape a compact oval rice-ball with approx. 60g of cooked Japanese rice.

2.

Add teriyaki sauce to the remaining rice, mix well to color the rice brown. Adjust the amount of teriyaki sauce depending on the type of sauce used. Similar to step one, this time shape about 55g brown coloured rice into a compact oval rice-ball. Press down on the bottom slightly, this is to enable the white rice-ball from step 1 to stack and overlap nicely on the brown rice-ball.

INGREDIENTS: • 125g cooked Japanese rice • 0.5-1 tsp teriyaki sauce • 2 cocktail sausages • Seaweed SIDE DISHES: • Ebi fry • Fruits and vegetables of choice

3.

TOOLS: • mixing bowl • cling wrap • cutting board and knife • small scissors • tweezers

Shape another two small brown rice-balls using the remaining rice, approx. 5g of rice each. This is for the puppy’s hands. You will have parts for the head, snout and hands.

4.

Trim the cocktail sausage by cutting a small diagonal cut at one end. Repeat for the second sausage. This is for the puppy’s ears.

Shirley Wong

5.

Using a small sharp scissors, cut the features of the puppy out of seaweed.

6.

Assemble the parts together in your bento box. You can also add a small heart cut out between the puppy’s hands made from pink kamaboko (Japanese fish cake) or other ingredients like carrots.

Popular food blogger and award-winning bento artist Shirley Wong, aka, Little Miss Bento, is well-known for her adorable Japanese bento creations and unique sushi art rolls on her blog and social media channels. She also published the much anticipated cookbook – KAWAII BENTO ($32 excluding GST, available at all major bookstores) with step-bystep instructions on how to put together attractive lunchboxes. http://littlemissbento.com
