“Being striking and colourful isn’t just for the young ones”, says renowned hair stylist Shunji Matsuo. At 64, he certainly has a different perspective on what it means to be beautiful. After all, to Shunji, age is just a number. Silver Carnival: At his latest catwalk, Shunji dressed up a group of energetic ordinary elderly with colourful, trendy hairstyles and creative wardrobes. His inspiration for this silver-age celebration was a scene he came across one day when he spotted some dully dressed elderly sitting in a corner. Noting that they didn’t look very happy,

Shunji Matsuo “IF THERE IS ONE THING I KNOW, IT IS HOW TO MAKE EVERYONE LOOK PRETTY OR HANDSOME…”

he says “In New York, the elderly wore clothing with fresh looking colours like red, yellow or green. That made me realise that you can be beautiful even if you have aged.” Being forever 43: “When I turned 43, my luck started place and helped me open a door of opportunity. I feel 43 this year and want to be 43 forever.” On staying healthy: Despite being 64, Shunji definitely looks younger than his age. His secret to his youthful looks is his healthy lifestyle. “I don’t touch any food that has high sugar content and I make an effort to eat more brown rice. For breakfast and lunch I only drink fruit and vegetable smoothies. Since May last year, I have lost about 7-8 kg.” A master’s conviction: Shunji not only manages his salon, but he cuts his customers’ hair too, for just $100. He firmly believes in keeping things affordable and reasonable. Shunji, who has worked together with big stars like Madonna, compared to celebrities, he much prefers styling the

“Doyo” refers to the 18 days before the end of a season, and occurs four times a year. Within that period, the natsu no doyo no ushi no hi - which occurs before the beginning of Autumn - is a day the Japanese associate with the eating of eel, or unagi. But this tradition is actually not that old. One version of its origin is that Hiraga Gennai, a multi-talented scientist, inventor, author etc. from the Edo era in the 18th century, started this trend.

Apparently this idea for a doyo no ushi no hi came about after an enterprising owner of an unagi restaurant approached Hiraga for help to create some publicity for his shop. Hiraga, who was known to have restored a static electricity generator from the West, was interested in electricity and studying electric eels at the time. According to ancient Eastern divination, summer was thought to be related to the “fi re” element which is countered by water. In the same way, water is represented by the color black. Hence it was thought that

black objects could counter the element of fire. The word “doyo” in the phrase doyo no ushi means water. So came the belief that on the day of the ushi, black objects are eaten to ward away evil. This was the basis on which eating black eel on a hot summer’s day would help to counter fatigue in the summer. Rieko Ido A graduate of Kokugakuin University, researcher of ancient Japanese customs and knowledge, conducts technical analysis on findings to apply them to modern lifestyles. The Winning Combination of Variety, Taste and Quality Musashi Miyamoto was a legendary samurai renowned for his excellent swordsmanship despite having no master or formal training. Likewise, Menya Musashi has strived to be much like its namesake, rising above the competition by serving ramen with ‘originality’ as its mantra. “We want customers to always be able to find something new and exciting to try every time they visit us,” explains CEO Mr. Takahashi. “We provide two different soup bases that we make daily in-store using authentic recipes from our Japan outlets. The Tokyo Tonkotsu soup; available at Raffles City, Vivocity and Westgate; and the Kyushu-Hakata Tonkotsu soup which is available at our other restaurants,” he elaborates. “Customers also have the choice between thick

or thin noodles and many toppings,” continued Mr. Takahashi. “Our Tsukemen offers four different flavourings and an adjustable portion of up to five times at no additional charge”. Seasonal specialties are served regularly to further excite ramen enthusiasts. The White Mori Ramen presents a medley of popular toppings such as slices of tender homemade pork rib chashu enriched with ten different flavourings and helpings of kakuni (stewed pork cubes) in a creamy tonkotsu broth. “We want to bring more new kinds of ramen never seen in Singapore,” Mr. Takahashi concluded. In Japan, it is common to attend firework festivals in a traditional Japanese outfit. Men usually wear a jinbei while women wear colour yukatas matched with a pair of geta (Japanese wooden clogs) and a kinchaku bag. To complete the picture, a paper fan is a popular choice as the perfect accessory.

Yukata・浴衣 A yukata, or summer kimono is made of hemp cloth that keeps you cool, especially during the summer heat. It is much easier to wear than a regular kimono and young ladies may prefer the trendy mini-yukatas.

Jinbei・甚平

Kinchaku・きんちゃく袋

Consisting of a top and shorts, a jinbei cools you down in the summer breeze. They are mostly made of cotton. The more traditional jinbei has a striped pattern with a simple colour as black, grey or brown.

These small Japanese drawstring bags are usually made of hemp fabric and are often of the same pattern as your yukata. Tie a bowknot to close the bag, and carry it by its strings.

Uchiwa and Sensu・ 団扇&扇子 Go for a casual uchiwa (round paper fan) or a classy sensu (folding fan). Tuck it in your Obi (yukata belt) when not in use. To look like a local tuck the uchiwa in the back and the sensu in the front of the belt.

KOCHI - AN UNTOUCHED TREASURE OF SHIKOKU Being the least populated amongst the 4 prefectures in Shikoku (after Ehime, Kagawa and Tokushima), Kochi is still unknown to many people. I feel this is a good thing as I fi nd that having fewer tourists around makes for a more relaxed trip. Reaching Kochi JR Train station after an 11 hours highway bus ride from Shinjuku, you will be greeted by 3 huge statues in front of the station. One of them is Ryoma Sakamoto , who is well known throughout Japan’s history for overthrowing the Tokugawa shogunate during the Edo period. If you walk on the streets of Kochi, you might be surprised to see the amount of shops and souvenirs using his name. For your next stop, why not head to OBIYAMACHI Shopping Arcade ; a great place to buy your souvenirs. Around the corner is another famous landmark – Harimayabashi a small red bridge that has a famous love story origin. According to the locals, the

Entrance of the Famous Hirome Ichiba

current landmark is a replica of the now demolished bridge, which has turned into a busy road. If you are getting hungry, there is Kochi’s famous Hirome Ichiba , an indoor food street market around the corner of the arcade that sells fresh sashimi, local delights and products . Just a 5 min walk across Hirome Ichiba is Kochi Castle . This 400 year old castle is one of the only twelve castles left intact in Japan and you can get a great panoramic view from its top floor . I also had the opportunity to visit my friend’s hometown in the rural area of southern Kochi called Tosashowa . During our 3 hour train ride to his home, I was able to appreciate nature’s beauty to the fullest with a great view of mountains, beautiful flowers like rapeseeds and even sakura . It was a really “soul-soothing” and fruitful experience. I recommend anyone to visit as there are more things Kochi has to offer.

When I ask my Japanese friends & colleagues for food recommendations in Kochi, they always tell me “Katsuo (Bonito)”. Commonly served as bonito flakes on top of okonomiyaki, it is part of the tuna family and Kochi’s residents take great pride with their preparation skills. Katsuo fi llets are lightly grilled over a fi re fuelled by straw, giving it a slightly smoky flavour. When outer layer is seared, the fi sh is dipped into iced water to stop the meat from further cooking, leaving the centre raw. The fi llets are then cut into thick slices and served either seasoned with salt, with dashi-stock, or with soya sauce & citrus dressing. It is then served with chopped spring onions and sliced raw garlic. This awesome dish should not be missed! Remember to check out WAttention Singapore Blog, I will cover Kochi with more exciting information.

In Japan, western-inspired cakes, pastries and desserts are often collectively just referred to as “sweets”. They are usually a fusion of traditional Japanese flavour and European style pastries – like matcha cream puffs or red bean pound cake. They are also a part of Japan’s rich Café culture that focuses on delectable menus, high quality coffee and great service. So follow us as we take three of Singapore’s food bloggers on an exciting culinary adventure to find the most authentic sweets and cafes in Singapore.

from Singapore “Otsukare sama desu” is said to colleagues or friends before parting and implies gratitude and acknowledgement that “It has been tough/tiring on you, thank you”. There isn’t a phrase in English that conveys the same meaning in such situations. “Bye, see you tomorrow” doesn’t come close, while making an effort to say “thanks for today” would sound weird if you’re seeing the same person for the rest of the working week. “Otsukare sama desu” makes you feel like you deserve that after work beer…oh, and did I mention it’s also said in place of “kampai” (cheers) in such sessions?

Beat the Heat with

Kose Cool BB Spray Foundation It is summer and you just wish that there is a long-lasting foundation which can keep your skin silky smooth in the sun. Well, Kose heard you and came up with a cool-touch five-in-one foundation spray that will give you a refined complexion and fresh look all day long. Having tried dozens of beauty products myself, I am thrilled to share with you Kose’s foundation which has captured my heart and left my skin glowing with optimal radiance.

How to use

Nancy Liu Nancy is a writer, translator and interpreter in both Chinese and English. She lives in the city of Tokyo, enjoys reading historical novels and loves exploring foreign cultures in her free time.

Trial report My face has gotten really dry since the move to Tokyo last year, and I had to apply tons of moisturisers before makeup. On a hot summer s day, the idea of slathering on moisturisers before sunscreen and foundation just felt heavy and unappealing. This year, Kose s BB spray came to my rescue by introducing an ultralight coverage that serves the functions of beauty essence, sunblock, primer, foundation and powder. After application, I found my skin enjoyed the coolness of the spray, absorbing all the nourishing ingredients in the formula. Amazing as it may seem, my cheeks literally felt five degrees cooler and more supple. The foundation, which comes in two shades, covered every little flaw and evened out the complexion by lightening dark spots and eye bags. The part I love the most is that the feather-light finish can last all day̶even on a long day at work or out in the sun.

Finish the basic skin care steps before applying the spray-on. First, shake the can well and remove its cap. Spray the foundation onto the makeup sponge included in the package from a distance of two centimeters for one to two seconds. Smoothen the foundation onto face and neck, blending for a natural finish. Do not spray directly on the face as freeze burns can occur.

Recommendation Kose s Cool BB Spray foundation spray is an innovative beauty product that makes makeup on the go a breeze . The easy-to-carry spray bottle fits into any bag and delivers a quick, cool foundation touch wherever and whenever. Designed for everyday use, the multifunctional formula provides an invisible shield against harmful UVA and UVB rays without the hassle of applying sunscreen cream. Keep your makeup routine simple this season and look great even in the heat with Kose Cool BB Spray.

Take a Cruise, Take in the Views Lake Yamanakako was added to the World Heritage List as part of the Fujisan Cultural Site in 2013. It is the highest of the Fuji Five Lakes in terms of elevation and the largest in terms of surface area making it ideal for fishing and water sports. After a quick barbeque lunch at PICA Yamanakako Village, followed by a brief nap in the comfy hammocks, we were fully recharged and ready to cruise the lake on the amphibious Yamanakako no KABA, which splashed from land to lake, with lively explanations from our onboard guide. We also tried the Excursion Ship [Swan Lake], just in time to see the sun set over Mt. Fuji.

Fuji-Q Highland Area

Get High at the Foot of Mt. Fuji Fuji-Q Highland is possibly the most scenic theme park to scream your lungs out while taking the world’s tallest, fastest and steepest roller coaster rides. Unfortunately, it was raining when we arrived, but thanks to the “next generation movie theatre” called the Fuji Airways (Hikousha) ride, we could enjoy the stunning aerial views of Mt. Fuji from the comfort of our carriage seats. As lunchtime approached, we could not resist the smell of freshly baked pastries at the Café Brioche, where we had tea and croissants with our new favorite French duo, Lisa & Gaspard.

Get high here Fuji-Q Highland Fuji-Q Highland features Guinness World Record breaking roller coasters. Fujiyama, the park's centerpiece attraction, was the world's tallest and fastest roller coaster when it opened in 1996, and it continues to rank among the best coasters in the world. Let’s Talk Subculture Explore the fascinating world of Japan s subcultures with insights from the inside.

VOL.02

Love Live! Fans got to pay pilgrimage to the Kanda Myojin.

Answering Anime Fans’ Prayers All the stars were aligned for fans of the Love Live! anime during this year’s Kanda Festival held from 9-10 May. For the first time, they got to pay pilgrimage officially at the Kanda Myojin, which appears frequently in the anime as a backdrop, and buy limited-edition official good luck charms and Kanda Myojin prayer tablets from the shrine featuring the anime’s characters. This collaboration between the Shinto shrine and hit anime is a sign of the growing influence of subculture – even into the sacred space of shrines and one of Japan’s biggest festivals!

Love Live! charms Love Live! is about a group of nine schoolgirls who decide to form a school idol group to raise the profile of their school that is on the verge of closing down due to low enrolment. Combining the concept of live idols with anime, this series hit the right note with the audience and since its magazine debut in 2010, has sold music CDs, games, become a TV series, and will even release its first movie this June. You know you have made it when you find your image endorsing the official good luck ema prayer tablets or protective charms of a historical shrine like Kanda Myojin.

Kanda hard to imagine? Unlike Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines – which are indigenously Japanese – are more open to such collaborations and adapt to the times. Previous collaborations include a “Kanda Myojin Day” at the Tokyo Dome

Fans flock to the festival

with the baseball team Tokyo Giants. This is reflective of the Shinto philosophy where the religion is action-oriented and focuses on ritual practices to connect present-day Japan to its ancient past. And how can present day Japan not give any recognition to its booming subculture of anime? Moreover, the Kanda Myojin is just a stone’s throw from the mecca of otaku, Akihabara. Apparently, Love Live! fans already pay pilgrimage to the Kanda Myojin, where Nozomi, one of the characters, works as a part-time shrine maiden.

From Akihabara to Kanda Myojin Museum Who knows, perhaps within the next 100 years, there may be a poster of the Love Live! school idol group rocking out hung on the walls of the Kanda Myojin Museum, where currently paintings from the Edo era, such as a ukiyoe painting of a kabuki performance with an accompanying instrumental ensemble performing at the Kanda Festival, are displayed.

Fans flocked to the shrine to be the first in line to get their hands on these Love Live! collaboration goods. But first, many offered their prayers, hung up their ema with original manga drawings, and took selfies with the shrine that appears in the anime. The Love Live! Kitchen Car also made its debut at the festival, filling hungry fans with limited Kanda Festival-themed Love Live! lattes, sodas, juices and marshmallows.

Featuring all nine Love Live! members dressed as shrine maidens, this limited-edition poster was sold at the Kanda Festival.
