Mt. Suribachi すり鉢山の桜
folding screens “Mt. Suribachi”
There is one place in Ueno Park where I especially enjoy sitting on the grass. It is under an old cherry tree. I am told the fleeting nature of cherry blossoms remind us of the transitory nature of all things. I imagine the many, many people who have celebrated spring in this spot over the years. There is a theory that suggests that the history of a place remains with that place in one shape or another for a millennium. Mt. Suribachi in Ueno Park draws on these truths the deepest. Although miles from the ocean now, Ueno was once at the heart of Yayoi culture, which depended on the wealth of food found below the valley in ocean inlet pools. Many of the flame-shaped pots and clay figures that we associate with the culture can be seen here in the National Museum in Ueno Park. Originally housing the art collection of the Imperial Family, the museum was built on land that was home
to the Emperor’s retreat and the site of Tokugawa Shogun’s family’s Kan’eiji Temple complex and ancestral graves. We call this verdant place Mt. Suribachi because it looks like an upside-down mortar pot. It is the mound which was once incorporated into the temple gardens as a mountain feature. Only recently was it discovered to have been the burial mound of an ancient Yayoi king. I spread myself out on a soft spot on the ground in the shade of the cherry tree and looked up at blossoms which would scatter and fade in a few days. The ocean coral I use for the pink pigment will not fade for a thousand years. We will be gone in but a short time, but there will be others who shall celebrate spring here in our stead.

MERCHANDISE
秋田犬とは?
In 1931, the Akita dog, a breed native to northern Japan was designated a natural monument by the Japanese government. Best known for its loyalty, obedience and intelligence, this breed of hunting dogs are normally reddish-brown, white, or brindle in colour. Other unique features of the Akita dog are its fluffy coat, triangular ears and curly tail. Helen Keller, a blind U.S social activist, was credited with bringing the first Akita dog to the States. Other famous Akita dog owners include Olympic figure skating champion Alina Zagitova and Russian President Vladimir Putin. In 2009, the true story of a loyal Akita dog named Hachi also made headlines worldwide.
When visiting the home of Akita dogs, be sure to bring home some Akita dog souvenirs as proud trophies!

EXCEPTIONAL HINAIJIDORI CHICKEN CUISINE
A CLASSIC DISH TO WARM THE BODY AND SOUL Kiritampo hot pot is a local gourmet item that is strongly connected to the identity of Akita. It is said that hunters and lumberjacks who worked in the mountains invented the delicacy by mashing and kneading rice into chicken hot pot. Grilled kiritampo originated from Odate, so saying no to kiritampo is definitely not an option while visiting.
Hinaijidori chicken, a specialty of Odate, is known as one of the top three most delicious breeds of chicken in Japan. One simple dish made using the tender, flavourful meat that all first-timers should try is oyakodon, a hearty rice bowl with bite-size chicken and mixed with half-cooked beaten eggs. 小坂ワイン

Night Photography Meet the Canon EOS R camera that comes built with a revolutionary mount system for high-performance capture and a full-frame 30.3-megapixel CMOS sensor. Made to deliver stunning photos and videos in different environments, the amazing RF mount combines speed, durability and flexibility for perfection in every shot.
Chase the light wherever you go The lack of light is a huge challenge of night photography; simply keep an eye out for interesting light sources including neon lights from signs, streetlamps, which you can use to your advantage.
Use the right lens For night photography, you may want to try using a wide-angle lens that captures more of the scene so the image looks more dynamic. Using a mount adapter, try out the EF35mm f/1.4L II USM lens as it is a prime lens with a large aperture which allows more light to enter. Don’t forget to use a lens hood as this can help to reduce the amount of lens flare from outside your frame.
Turn it up with props Experiment with shiny surfaces that help to reflect surrounding light; try placing the item in various angles to achieve the best effect on your subject’s face. Make use of the EOS R’s Vari-angle LCD monitor so shooting from different angles becomes way easier too!

1. Join in the celebration of Hinamatsuri (ひな祭り, Girls’ Day) Join in the celebration of Hinamatsuri (ひな祭り, Girls’ Day). Held annually on the 3rd of March to commemorate girlhood, families also pray for their daughter’s healthy growth. During this time, they put up special doll displays. Head to The Kyoto National Museum or the Keio Plaza Hotel in Tokyo to see some of the most remarkable doll displays in the country!

2. Pick and taste the difference in strawberry varieties At many fruit farms across the country, you can participate in strawberry picking and eat as much as you can while at it. Some famed varieties worth trying are Amaou (あまおう), Tochiotome (とちおとめ) and Benihoppe (紅ほっぺ).
3. Go spring skiing Even as the weather transitions and temperatures become milder, many ski resorts in Japan remain open until late spring. There are even special events held to mark the change in seasons. Navigate world-class slopes and soak in hot springs after!

The blooming of sakura heralds the coming of spring and with it, a fresh beginning after a long, cold winter. Artistic culture in Japan has also been heavily influenced by cherry blossoms, with writers, poets and musicians paying tribute to it in their own ways. Here are some beautiful Japanese words related to sakura:
Standard Japanese
English
花より団子 (Hana yori dango)
A funny metaphor meaning substance over form
花霞 (Hanagasumi)
A hazy curtain of flowers; cherry blossoms appearing from afar like white mist
桜吹雪 (Sakura-fubuki)
Blizzard/flurry of falling cherry blossoms
花明かり (Hana-akari)
The brilliance of cherry blossoms illuminating the evening
三日見ぬ間の桜 (Mikka-minu-ma-no-sakura)
A highly evocative word that means change happens as suddenly and intensely as the speed in which sakura goes from full bloom to being scattered Illustration credit: www.irasutoya.com & www.freepik.com

OKINAWA GOURMET - THE ORIGIN OF ENERGETIC OKINAWANS Okinawa, Japan’s southernmost prefecture with its own history as an independent kingdom and the birthplace of karate, has a distinct food culture very much unlike the rest of the nation. First developed during the Great Trade era to cater to Chinese envoys, it has since evolved with influences from Japan and other Asian countries. After the war, American food culture made its way into Okinawan diet and continues to be cherished by its people. A local soul food, Okinawa Soba is a must-try when you visit. Travel to Urasoe City for the famous Yushi Tofu Soba (ゆし豆腐そば ) at Takaesu Soba ( 高 江洲そば ). Yushi Tofu Soba is made with mild-tasting pork bone soup and topped with Yushi Tofu (non-pressed tofu). Another local favourite, Kinchichi Soba (金月そば ) has chewier noodles that go well with clear katsuobushi broth. This dish is topped with stewed pork belly that melts in your mouth and a piece of fried tofu. Another Okinawa soul food to try is Goya Chanpuru (ゴーヤチャンプルー) . Goya means bitter gourd and Chanpuru means mixed in the Okinawan language. It is a stir-fried dish of bitter gourd with tofu and pork
or luncheon meat. If you are a fan of mutton soup, why not order a bowl of Hija-jiru or Yagi-jiru (ヒージャ ー汁/ヤギ汁, goat soup) , which is usually cooked with ginger, Okinawan Mugwort and served with rice.
Okinawa Prefecture 沖縄県
Heavy American influence has resulted in the use of ingredients like luncheon meat and corned beef in Okinawan food. For example, the Pork and Egg Onigiri (ポークたまごおにぎり) is similar to Hawaii Spam Musubi but comes in more variations such as Bitter Gourd Tempura and Tuna Mayonnaise. Another example is Chanpon (ちゃんぽん) , a stir-fried vegetable dish with corned beef on rice. Mexican food like tacos are also widely seen in Okinawa. Formerly catering to American soldiers, it is now widely accepted by locals and inspired the creation of a fusion dish - Taco Rice (タコライス). You may try authentic tacos at Charlie’s Tacos in Okinawa City and Taco Rice at Taco Rice Café Kijimuna at Senaga Island, Umikaji Terrace. If you liked your food in Okinawa, remember to tell the shopkeeper maーsan doー (まーさんどー), which means delicious in Okinawan Language.

Ohanami (お花見) is an annual phenomenon whereby locals and tourists flock to parks or gardens to sit under a sakura tree and enjoy the natural beauty of its flowers. Get the most out of your hanami experience by arriving early to pick the best spot! Purchase special sakura-themed bento sets, snacks and drinks to bring along, pack tissues (both wet and dry), and put on a light jacket to keep warm against the cool spring temperatures. It is essential to know where the nearest bathrooms are located, and to clear up all trash when you leave the grounds after a successful hanami session.

Kanhizakura (寒緋桜 ) are dark pink in colour and shaped like a bell. Native to Taiwan and Okinawa, they can bloom as early as January but are still found flowering in March.
Kikuzakura (菊桜 ) are a type of yaezakura (八重桜 , blossoms with more than five petals). They can have up to 100 layered petals and are known to bloom later than Somei Yoshino.
Shidarezakura (枝垂桜 ) have distinct drooping branches that resemble those of a weeping willow. Bearing cascades of bright pink flowers, they are wellloved by the Japanese.

Spring is in full bloom! The line above, extracted from a poem titled “In spring, the dawn”, was written by Sei Shonagon. It describes how “light creeps over the hills, their outlines dyed a faint red and wisps of purplish clouds trail over them”, making dawn the most beautiful time of day during spring.
