I gave her a layered lob (long bob) cut that is popular this season and applied lavender ash highlights that quell the yellow in her skin and add glow, before styling her hair in loose waves.

I did a 3D Volume Lash with Upwardlash® lifting to make her eyes appear bigger. It also lengthened the corner of her eyes, giving her a sophisticated yet natural look.

IN HARMONY WITH THE SEASONS

Honeysuckle すいかずら

One of my happy childhood memories is of the piles of books we borrowed from the library during summer holiday. One of which was “The Life of the Bee”. The author presented the bee colony as one of the most ideal societies which could be found on earth, and I thought on what it would be like to be a bee. There, on lazy evenings in the back yard, as the light was taking on a pink hue, it was my joy to pluck honeysuckle blossoms while withdrawing the stamen and licking off the single drop of nectar I could coax out. I had a running debate with my sister as to whether the yellow ones were sweeter or the same flavor as the white. Since then, almost forty years now, my life brought me to this remarkably harmonious beehive of a city, Tokyo. I would go yearly on a moonlit midnight to my secret place near Sanshiro pond where the honeysuckle was wild and grew to an incredible, sheltering size. This became my private summer ritual. But sadly I found they have all been cut down. Nevertheless, my faith in the indomitable nature of this unprepossessing vine gives me hope that if not this year, possibly next year, I will once again be able to enjoy my quiet bee pilgrimage in the dappled shade. For now, though, I will be this titmouse taking in the honeysuckle air.

Messages from Chairmen Mr. Kenji Onishi Shibuya Ward Shotengai Business Association Chairman

Mr. Ho Nai Chuen Chairman of the Tanjong Pagar-Tiong Bahru Citizens Consultative Committee

I would like to congratulate Tanjong Pagar Shopping District Campaign on its third year of commencement. Shotengai (商店街 ) embodies Japan’s unique communal culture of Wa (和) as each individual shops within the same district band together to support the daily lives of the people. It brings me great honour to hear of an event inspired by Japan’s shotengai culture in Singapore. I hope that through this, many would want to visit the shotengai of Japan for an authentic local experience. With this shotengai campaign, I hope that the liveliness of the district will prosper with the shotengai spirit.

This campaign has raised the awareness of Tanjong Pagar precinct amongst shoppers and office workers who frequent this area. The rise in the number of shop owners participating in the last two years clearly injected vibrancy and added confidence in the viability and sustainability of the project. Such a concept should be replicated in other parts of Singapore, particularly the Tiong Bahru precinct, as it is another historical district where fellow Singaporeans are keen to learn more about its cultural heritage, food variety and pre-war bomb shelters as well as true meaning of Tiong Bahru.

Tanjong Pagar Lucky Draw Campaign is back for the THIRD TIME this year! Tanjong Pagar has played a major role in Singapore’s history since its inception as a port city. Traditional shophouses reminiscent of the port city days of Singapore lined the streets of Tanjong Pagar with shops specialising in finance and commerce. These days, modern office buildings and hotels have risen in this area, creating a unique area shared by both office workers and residents. Pioneering the Japanese restaurant business in the area are two key people whom we had the opportunity to hear more from.

HIROSHIMA – TRACING BACK REASONS FOR PEACE Hiroshima is a prefecture that greatly emphasises the importance of peace. Known for its UNESCO World Heritage sites such as Itsukushima Shrine on Miyajima Island and the Hiroshima Peace Memorial in Hiroshima City, it has been a popular destination for tourists travelling to Japan. However, there is much more to Hiroshima than meets the eye. I would like to introduce two interesting locations that are often overlooked in Hiroshima. First is Kure City, a major location in the animated film “In This Corner of the World” (こ の世界の片隅に) , with another being Hiroshima City. There, you will be able to visit the Yamato Museum , where you can marvel at its main attraction—the large 1/10 scale model of the heaviest and largest battleship ever built during World War II, the Yamato. This model—located at the centre of the museum—was duplicated as accurately and as detailed as possible, based on original drawings, photos and underwater images

taken by submersible surveys. Authentic relics displayed from the war include Type 62 Zero fighter jets and a Kaiten human torpedo , serving as strong reminders of the horrors of war and the importance of peace. Free audio commentary devices are also available, and the adult admission fee is only ¥500. Next is Okunoshima Island, also known as Rabbit Island (ウサギの島). You can get to this island via speedboat from either Mihara City (30 min, ¥1,500 single trip, ¥2,400 discounted round trip) or Tadanoumi station (15 min, ¥310 single trip). 1,000 wild rabbits run about freely on Okunoshima Island and you can even feed the rabbits there . However, behind all the fluff lies a dark history. Okunoshima Island was also the centre of chemical weapons research and production during World War II, with a now-defunct poison gas factory on site, as well as the Okunoshima Poison Gas Museum . So, keep a look out for these locations on your next trip to Hiroshima!

Akasaka

赤坂

AREA SPECIAL:

The History Of

Akasaka The history of the district goes back to around 1567 when Hitotsugi village was first established on the lands that would later become Akasaka. Fast-forward a few decades to the Edo Period and the area finally started to come to life thanks to the many samurai residences that were being built there. The sudden influx of the warrior class to the area also attracted merchants, which in turn resulted in Akasaka becoming more of a commercial district. This trend continued right until the Meiji Restoration in 1868, when the warrior class ceased to exist and the Akasaka samurai were replaced by politicians, soldiers, and public servants, all of whom needed to be fed and entertained. After the Meiji Restoration this allowed many ryotei (high-class Japanese-style restaurants) and over 100 geisha houses to open in Akasaka. With their guests consisting of Japan’s most influential and powerful men, Akasaka soon became one of the most famous entertainment districts in the country. 32

Manryu

A lot of Akasaka’s popularity was due to the geisha Manryu. Manryu was born around 1894 as Shizu Tamukai. When she was just seven years old, she entered an Akasaka geisha house named Harumoto to be trained in the art of dance, singing, and traditional entertainment. From a very young age, Manryu was praised for her great beauty. She was a natural choice as a model for the beautiful women postcards, which quickly made her a star. One might even say that she was the f irst modern Japanese female celebrity, with people actually saying things like: “When it comes to a woman, it’s Manryu.” At one point, the stunning geisha was even voted the most beautiful woman in all of Japan, bringing yet more fame to her home district of Akasaka.

- Reinventing Elegance Akasaka has more to offer other than its political and business vibes. Follow us as we peel off another side of its vintage beauty and modern flare that you have yet to see.

Hinokicho Park ©THE CAPITOL HOTEL TOKYU

Sadly, huge portions of Akasaka were destroyed during the W WⅡ bombing s , but bec ause of the area’s close proximity to the National Diet Building, its redevelopment was swif t and took advantage of the chance to shed some of Akasaka’s risqué reputation and be reborn as a more high-class place. In practice, this meant keeping all the expensive restaurants but doing away with the geishas. Today, Akasaka is still entertainment-oriented, but in more of a gourmet sense.

Renovated ryotei connects the  Kaisu is a hub for international exchanges

past with the present

A kasaka ’s hanamachi ( geisha dis tric t) used to be the place where politicians and business leaders from home and abroad would gather for important discussions during the economic boom in Japan. Although hanamachi disappeared along with the bubble economy, Akasaka remains the hub for international exchanges to this day. Originally a traditional Japanese ryotei frequented by VIPs, the Shimazaki Restaurant was converted into a multifunctional space that brings together a hostel, a café and a bar. Kaisu extends a warm welcome to guests of all nationalities, carrying on the heritage of Akasaka’s glorious past.

Exquisite hospitality throughout the ages Toraya’s refurbished flagship store and its exhibition gallery Toraya is a Kyoto-born confectioner y shop with hundreds of years of histor y, proudly ser ving as a purveyor to the Imperial court. Toraya opened its first Tokyo shop in 1869, when the capital was transferred from Kyoto to Tokyo. The Toraya Akasaka shop has been witness to the changes and development of the area, ever since its grand opening in 1879. After undergoing a largescale renovation in 2018, the shop is now walled with glass, bright with natural light, and ready to continue making history. The basement level is a gallery showcasing Japanese culture while the third floor features a viewing area where you can see confectioners at work. We suggest that you order some freshly made Japanese confections at Toraya Pavilion to get a taste of history.

Japanese Western-style restaurant Akasaka Tsutsui and its endless culinary delights In 1950, Koso Tsutsui, the founder of Akasaka Tsutsui, opened a restaurant in Kayabacho’s Shinkawa. Five years later, he moved the restaurant to Akasaka, a prosperous area with high levels of economic activity at the time. Tsutsui was a man of many innovative ideas; he replaced forks with chopsticks and substituted wine with soy sauce in order to make Western dining more appealing to Japanese people. Their grilled Japanese black wagyu loin beef bowl is a dish that’s famous among foodies. Topped with a unique sauce made using dark soy sauce, Japanese sweet rice wine mirin and sugar and served with butter and black pepper, this culinary invention is a gem you don’t want to miss.

A new bar experience in Tokyo Bar Wagokoro Akasaka brings you the best of eastern and western elements Nicely tucked away in Akasaka’s bustling commercial area, Bar Wagokoro Akasaka is a bar with fine touches of Japanese flair. The white bar counter and traditional kiriko glassware reflect the owner’s exquisite taste and astonishing detail. Apart from enjoying a collection of Japanese whisky and a matcha-based cocktail, you can also taste chocolates which include miso, konbu and other Japanese condiments. This bar exhibits the perfect harmony between eastern and western cultures and echoes Akasaka’s exotic legacy and charm.

The incredible, transformative power of makeup Having always kept a keen eye out for Japanese beauty trends, I was more than a little excited to watch my very first episode of this series. The program, hosted by two lively and kawaii girls, kicked off with an impactful look at sagi meiku (詐欺メイク, scam makeup). The term is used to describe the huge, and usually positive transformation that takes place after makeup is applied on a person. Personally, knowing that anyone who feels insecure can literally transform themselves with some makeup tricks is something I found to be both entertaining and extremely empowering at the same time. Next, we’re shown how technology has helped elevate the way consumers try out fragrances and test makeup on in stores. Besides the impressive virtual makeup experience using augmented reality, I was in absolute awe watching the segment about a futuristic device that could analyse one’s skin and print out customised makeup. The device, slated for release in 2020, is every lazy

Trails to Oishii Tokyo MAGURO

Duration: 15 mins

Divine taste awaits in every cut and every bite “Maguro is undefeatable as a sushi ingredient”, and with that succinct quote, we dive right in to the delicious world of the king of fish and a favourite amongst the Japanese. Our reporter first travels to Katsuura Fishing Port, which receives the largest trading value of fresh maguro in the country. Watching her tuck into freshly grilled maguro kama (gill flesh) made me wish I could take her place in that moment! The most interesting part of the episode came after though, during which we see how a maguro is cut, the current methods used to fish maguro from the sea and the auction process in the market. Having regretted missing out on the maguro auction at the old Tsukiji Market before it moved, I am glad that I can easily access the experience with these insightful episodes and highly recommend all who love Japanese cuisine to do the same!
