Jigokudani Nagano Snow Monkey Park

Covered in snow for nearly one third of the year, this may be hell for humans but it is heaven for the monkeys. Since the park was opened to public in 1964 visitors from all over the world can’t get enough of the onsen-dipping monkeys.

Started in 1872, this was the first silk-reeling factory established by the Japanese government. It was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in June 2014. The main buildings such as the silk-reeling mill are still preserved in excellent condition.

Ginzan Onsen Street First used as an onsen resort for a nearby silver mine, this nostalgic street of wooden bathhouses is also famous as a filming location for NHK drama series “Oshin”, using ryokan “Notoya” as a setting.

This area of former samurai residences was founded in 1620, and gives a taste of what streets during the feudal era looked like. Kakunodate is also famous for being a cherry blossom spot, gaining it the name as “Little Kyoto of Oushuu”.

This steam engine was inspired by Miyazawa Kenji’s novel, “Fantasy Railroad in the Stars”. The train carriages exude and old world charm. There’s even a planetarium in the train which projects images of the galaxy.

One of Japan's Four Big Lakes, and the third clearest in Japan, this was also called the "Tenkyoko" for reflecting Aizu's Mt. Bandai. Try ice skating on the lake during winter.

These are then cut into bite-sized morsels and thrown into the chicken broth hotpot with other ingredients for a hearty winter meal.

Miyagi’s signature food item, the zundamochi, is made by mashing boiled green soybeans and mixing it with some sugar and salt for a tasty paste that is eaten with mochi.

Located in Yokote City, this is a fully experiential theme park based on Akita’s traditional villages. Other than boasting the largest planetarium in Tohoku, there are other attractions such as souvenir shops and a restaurant serving traditional Akita dishes to get a full flavor of Akita’s charms.

Most of the strawberries in Japan are harvested in the early Spring, but in Yamagata’s Sagae City you can try picking strawberries in the snow (reservations required). Get an early taste of strawberries grown in greenhouses.

If you missed the festival in early August, you can check out the home of the nebuta here, where some of the giant lantern floats are displayed. There are also various experiential activities here, such as drum beating, which you can try as part of the nebuta experience.

Harunako Lake Illumination Every December Gunma’s Takasaki City lights up for this event where around 50,000 bulbs are used in various illuminations to create a dreamlike night scene. The illuminated lakeside pathway stretching for 100m and daily laser shows and fireworks are sure to delight.

Oyaki Dumpling Making Originated in Shinshu (the traditional name for Nagano Prefecture), oyaki dumpling has evolved to become a simple yet delicious local specialty dish. Try your talent in oyaki making in the setting of Jomon style pit houses in Oyakimura Village. From making pastry and fillings to the final step of baking, the hands-on experience is sure to bring lots of fun (reservation required).

This is clearly one of Tohoku’s Top Three Festivals, and is also one of Japan’s Intangible Cultural Heritages. Hanagasa Matsuri Held every summer, participants wear straw hats decorated with paper safflowers—the prefectural flower of Yamagata--and don colorful traditional costumes while dancing in unison to the traditional Hanagasa song.

Nagaoka Fireworks Festival This annual fireworks festival held at Nagaoka City in Niigata Prefecture is one of Japan’s big three fireworks festivals.

Held once every seven years by the Suwa Grand Shrine, selected fir trees aged over 150 years old are dragged down the mountain to be erected as poles around the Shrine. Don’t miss the next Onbashira Festival in April and May 2016!

Akita Kantou Matsuri The Akita Kantou Matsuri harks back to the Edo era and is designated as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage. Its highlight is the lifting of a 12m-long pole weighing 50kg onto the shoulders of the parade participants.

Iwate Snow Festival This week-long festival takes place every February at the Koiwai Dairy Farm, which transforms into a fairytale world of white. Other than admiring the snow sculptures, one can ride on horse-pulled carriages and enjoy a barbecue in an igloo!

Sendai Tanabata Matsuri This is one of the top three festivals in Tohoku. During the festival, central Sendai will be colored by elaborate bamboo

Every September, some 500 festival participants gather at Aizu Wakamatsu for this festival where they march from Tsurugajo Castle to downtown Aizu Wakamatsu dressed as Aizu Clan samurais, making for a grand sight. 11

This area gained a reputation for metal goods and cutlery production since the Edo era. Even till today, many craftsmen insist on using traditional techniques to make knives and cutlery.

Kokeshi Dolls

Uetsu Shinafu Cloth

Designated as a national traditional craft, Shinafu is made from the fibre of trees and plants. Its texture is rough and durable, and together with Okinawa’s Bashofu and Shizuoka’s Kuzufu make up the Big Three Ancient Fabrics of Japan.

Household items dyed using peony pigment has a warm look and soft touch. This technique has been adopted by Japanese designer Masako Oka in her designer label “ECOMACO”, in which all items are handmade in collaboration with handicapped people.

Kogin embroidery originated in the Edo era and was passed down to the Tsugaru region. This craftwork evolved from the household stitching women working on the farms did during the winter and evolved over time to decorate garments.

Designated as a national traditional craft, Nambu Ironware originated from Iwate Prefecture with a 400 year history. All parts are intricately made by hand. Ironware products include teakettles, wind chimes and hotpots.

These have roots as toy dolls in the Tohoku area and were made by a piece of wood by craftsmen. They have a straight torso, round head and simple strokes for facial expressions. Each region has a unique Kokeshi design.

This is distinguished by its special production technique that requires repetitive steps and long years of training as craftsmen. The lacquerware is both practical yet beautiful.

Kabazaiku, or Cherrybark Craftwork

The bark of the mountain cherry is used to make utensils and originates from the Edo era. Each item is carefully handcrafted and gets more beautiful in color with usage.
