GRIMM was founded in Amsterdam in 2005. Since its establishment, the gallery has been committed to promoting and supporting emerging and mid-career artists who work in a diverse range of media. Representing over thirty international artists, the gallery has two spaces in Amsterdam, and one in New York and regularly holds a presence at some of the largest art fairs around the world including Art Basel and Frieze.
Each gallery space accommodates eight group shows and solo exhibitions a year. GRIMM’s program showcases a diverse array of artists working in different mediums, from painting and sculpture to larger installation thus requiring a flexible and continuously evolving space.

CONTEXT
Tribeca East Historic District This project site is located in the Tribeca East Historical District. Within the larger neighborhood, this district is known for its special urban expression specifically attributed to its ornate block fronts and store and loft building types.

These 19th century structures are characterized by their use of cast-iron facades- a consequence of requiring large openings for the loading and unloading of goods, and high-

CONTEXT
54 White Street 54 White St. Facade
Situated between Broadway and Church St., 54 White St. is an archetypical historic Tribeca building. A five story store-andloft type building, this Italianate style architecture was designed by Benjamin Warner and constructed between 1866-68 for the Zabriskie family- one of New York’s largest real estate owners.
The storefront’s unique facade is characterized by its original cast-iron framing and columns supporting an entablature. Two projecting show windows, each with cornices, let light into the ground floor space while an iron fire escape stair descends from the fifth story.
Its sandstone masonry with cast-iron elements is expressed with distinct quoins and a bracketed terminal cornice.

HISTORY
Prior to GRIMM gallery taking ownership of the space, 54 White St. previously enjoyed cult status as the home of the ARChive of Contemporary Music for over 35 years. ARC was a nonprofit archive, music library and research center which was home to one of the largest music collections in the world.

The archive’s deep collection garnered celebrity support with a “board of advisors” consisting of music industry legends such as Lou Reed, Paul Simon, Keith Richards, and David Bowie. After moving out of 54 White St., ARC has relocated to a new space in Upstate New York.
Holding 3 million+ recordings, ARC gained its cult-status in Tribeca for its music books, videos, memorabilia, press

INTERIOR
Existing Conditions Stair to Cellar
The existing space at 54 White St. consisted of original hardwood floors and a tin paneled ceiling typical to many historic Tribeca buildings. However, the rest of the space required significant restoration due to its deteriorating condition.
This view was taken in opposition to the typical plug and play formula where a gut renovation is undertaken with a view to inserting a highly polished white-box gallery space, stripping the space of it s lasting identity.
Both WAU and GRIMM saw huge potential in the rehabilitation of the 6000 sq ft space in order to preserve its rich history and architectural features.
