The Children’s Center

As the first event of the day, our hardworking members helped set up the new Family Literacy Center at the Children’s Center! We catalogued, organized, and shelved over 2,000 books that will be available, free of charge, to any patrons of the Center. We loved the opportunity to continue to work with TCC and look forward to the Grand Opening of the Library!

Gleaners Food Bank “There were 6 members and as a team we were given a list of different foods, such as canned peaches or a bag of rice. We had to put a certain amount on a wooden pallet. The food we put together was going to an elderly group so we had to put some of the foods together on the pallet and Saran wrap it. The pallets got really heavy to the point we had to use a jack to move them to their area. When we were finished we had packed a total of 10,300 lbs of food and impacted over 1100 lives -Ray

Mittens for Detroit

“Working with the volunteer coordinator, Wendy, to count, sort and package mittens for distribution across Detroit was an eye opening experience. It showed me how important mittens and gloves are to many children and families, an article of clothing I take for granted. A good pair of gloves can cost upwards of $20 which many families cannot afford, however with the help of Mittens for Detroit, thousands more hands are kept warm across the winters. Wendy encouraged us to work efficiently, showed us the impact of our work and also brought fun to our volunteering by playing ice hockey with water bottles during breaks :) -Sanaya

Arts & Scraps

“Arts & Scraps is an organization located on Detroit’s East Side that repurposes waste and extra materials into art kits for students. They’ve serviced Detroit Public Schools, appeared at many events throughout the region, and promoted creativity and science through their activities. Our members helped sort and prepare materials for packaging. Our service will allow Arts & Scraps continue their good work for the Children of Detroit!” -Sarosh

Detroit Rescue Mission

“Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries (DRMM) is a neighborhood organization in Detroit that acts as both a homeless shelter and a soup kitchen. Our members helped prepare and serve meals for over 200 Detroiters. The gentlemen we served were grateful for our help, and we can’t wait to go back!” -Mario

Oasis Soup Kitchen

“Located on Woodward Avenue in Highland Park, Oasis Soup Kitchen is an offshoot of DRMM that serves two meals a day to people in need. As volunteers, we put together meals, which included fish and fries. We then served it to the men who were eating at the shelter. It was amazing to be able to volunteer here!” -Khalil

New Beginnings Animal Shelter

“New Beginnings takes in stray cats and kittens from the community. Typically the cats are left behind when the owner cannot afford to keep the cats or kittens anymore. The majority of their staff is comprised of volunteers, some of whom have been there for 2+ years. When we went, we were “tasked” with playing with the little fur balls, since they are often just stuck in a room with nothing much. We played with them and gave them some much needed mental and physical stimulation.” -Sruthi

PB & J Outreach

“PB & J Outreach begins early in the morning! Volunteers assemble food packages and sandwiches for distribution to those who need it. The volunteers then go to the Cass Corridor of Detroit, where they hand out the food they prepared! Our members were really committed to wake up early in the morning and serve the people of Detroit. It was an amazing way to cap off 24 Hours of Service!” -Pallavi

Night Events “24 Hours of Service at night was a lot of fun! We got to socialize with fellow members while making cards for children in the hospital as well as blankets for patients. It was really cool that we could do something for people in need.We even got to eat some delicious food and desserts! :) -Audrey

Night Events

“After we left the Student Center, we continued our night service in an apartment common room. Here, we continued making blankets for patients at Karmanos Cancer Institute, and we also repurposed old jeans into shoes for children in Africa. The jeans were kindly donated to our organization by several members! We also were able to discuss the day and how it felt to be able to serve and impact so many people throughout our various activities. -Reena
