Letter from the Bulletin Editor Hey everyone! My name is Sarosh Irani, and I’m going to be your bulletin editor this year for CKI. My job is to put together bulletins every month that highlight our club goals and service events for each month, along with upcoming events. This specific volume will introduce this year’s E-Board, highlight our summer, and help acquaint new members with what Circle K is all about. We’ll also be introducing the member of the month concept and have a few words from our Kiwanis No. 1 District Governor. I hope you all enjoy the first bulletin for this semester!

The

Hello Everyone! I would like to congratulate you all on taking the initiative to join Circle K International at Wayne State University. Circle K International is the world’s largest student led collegiate service organization and our chapter here at Wayne State focuses on serving the metro Detroit community. Our service projects center around the four themes of: Blight and Environment, Education, Hunger and Homelessness, and Health and Medicine. In the past, we have volunteered with organizations such as the Children’s Center, Gleaner’s Food Bank, World Medical Relief, Back Alley Bikes, The Color Run Detroit, Detroit Rescue Mission and Arts and Scraps and many of these organizations are now are long term partners. We encourage members to share with us their favorite service organizations, so we can partner with them as well! Students are always looking to become involved with leadership at the organizational level. Circle K offers numerous leadership opportunities including committee and chair positions for committees you may be passionate about such as Fundraising, Service and Public Relations. Every member has the potential to serve as a leader, whether it is by holding a position, helping set up a service event or even simply volunteering to drive to service events. So thank you again for joining our organization and keep on the lookout for upcoming service and social events. I highly encourage everyone to get involved not only at the club level but also in District events such as Fall Rally in October and DCON in March. This is a great way to meet other Circle K’ers from across Michigan!! Looking forward to a great year of helping others and having fun while doing it!! Live to Serve, Love to Serve :) Yours faithfully, Sanaya Irani WSU Circle K President 2017-2018

Highlights from our Summer

Berkeley Kiwanis Charter Night-June 30 Our members paid a visit to the newly christened Kiwanis Club of Berkeley. The charter night included speeches from the Kiwanis Michigan District Governor, Marian O’Higgins, and the mayor of Berkeley, Dr. Phil O’Dwyer. Best of luck to Berkeley as they join our cause and help make their mark on their community and

Kiwanians all across the world!!!

Life Remodeled August 3 Our Circle K’ers partnered with several Kiwanians from Detroit No. 1 at this event. They helped clear overgrown weeds and grass from four blighted houses in the Davison neighborhood of Detroit. “It’s an amazing thing to be able to walk through struggling neighborhoods and see the people who live there, who were extremely sweet and thankful for our service, and know that you are helping to make a difference in their community.” -Sam

Arts, Beats, & Eats September 2 “This event was a great way to start off our year of service for Circle K. 12 of our members volunteered for 6 hours at the festival in Royal Oak. Based on our service, the festival helps fund the Children’s Center’s various events. During the time, we took turns taking breaks and enjoying delicious food from various food trucks at the event. After our assigned time, we were able to walk around and enjoy the event. We got to see all the fun things there was to offer and tried to get as much free prizes as we could at the different tables. Everyone who attended this service had a blast, and we can't wait to do it again next year!” -Audrey

Words from Detroit Kiwanis No. 1

Detroit Kiwanis No. 1 is the first Kiwanis club in the world, and in this city Kiwanis began on January 21, 1915. Our club was started by a group of businessmen in the Downtown area that wanted to network for business. Not far along, they decided they wanted more than that and wanted to give back to the community and thus started volunteering and helping others. We are a global service organization and in Michigan we are growing strong. Just a few months ago, we welcomed the Kiwanis Club of Berkeley, and we were glad some Circle K’ers could celebrate with us. I am Marian O’Higgins, Governor Elect of the Michigan District, soon to be Governor for 2017-2018. I am a proud member of Detroit Kiwanis No. 1 Club and look forward to working with WSU CKI to be involved, grow and do meaningful service in our community. About 12 years ago, Detroit No. 1 sponsored WSU Circle K. We are proud to be the sponsor of this energetic and involved Circle K. We look forward to collaborating on shared service activities and having members at our club meetings. Our next meeting dates are September 19th, October 3rd, and 17th at 12 pm. We meet at the Detroit Athletic Club, on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. We would love to have you join us at our meetings. Yours in Service, Marian O’Higgins, Governor Elect for Michigan District Kiwanis

The Children’s Center

Our fundraising project this year in partnership with UNICEF is the WASH Project or Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. 2.4 billion people worldwide do not have access to improved sanitation and there are now more mobile devices on this planet than there are toilets. WSU Circle K’s goal for this year is to raise $1,500 (See the Check-In on page 3 of this edition!!) to fund an emergency water storage tank with tap stands for 250 people. Please consider donating a small amount, buying some snacks at our bake sales, or helping with our numerous fundraisers throughout the year! Your support will go a long way in the lives of many!

What is Circle K?

What is Circle K International?

Circle K International is a student organization founded on the pillars of service, leadership, and fellowship. Our members cherish these and work tirelessly to uphold them. Our organization is dedicated to serving Detroit and our surrounding community. Every year, we engage in a variety of service events that help us make our city a better place. We volunteer at hospitals and children’s centers to help the kids of tomorrow succeed. We hold bake sales every two weeks to help fundraise for a good cause (this year, the WASH Project-see page 9). Every year, we host an event called 24 Hours of Service, where we plan service events from 7am-7am. CKI members from all over the state sign up for an epic day filled with hard work, smiles, and an overall good time.

This past year, we hosted the Michigan CKI District Convention, right in the heart of Detroit. Our members graciously welcomed over 100 Circle K’ers from across the mitten for a weekend filled with service, reflection, and celebration of another great year. All participants were able to volunteer at different sites throughout Detroit, which helped show them all of Detroit’s glory, as well as its troubles. Circle K’ers also participated in a thrilling scavenger hunt throughout Downtown which helped educate them about the city and its culture. We’ve already held our first event of the year (see Page 6) and are looking forward to many more! If this bulletin has done a good enough job of showing you why YOU should be a part of WSU CKI, pop in to our next meeting to get to know us more :)

What is Circle K?

Additionally, WSU CKI hosts a Fall Rally every year to help both new and old members learn more about Circle K and have a great time. Usually held in the Wayne State Student Center, our Fall Rally includes fun games, plenty of food, and an introduction to all the service events planned for the upcoming semesters. This year, our Fall Rally will be held on Thursday, October 5, at 7 pm in Room Hillberry E in the Student Center. Bring friends and a smile! It’s sure to be a good time.
