t is so exciting to have a full-scale Royal Ascot in operation for the first time since 2019 – even more so in this very special Platinum Jubilee year. The five days of Royal Ascot 2022 will be a fabulous display of elite Thoroughbred racing as we celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s extraordinary achievement. We all hope that another winner in the Royal colours will be added to The Queen’s current tally of 24 winners at the Royal Meeting since 1952.

2

All of the racecourse enclosures are open again and we are thrilled to be welcoming back everyone who wishes to attend, following a year behind closed doors and then a year with restricted crowds in 2021. We have made some reductions to the capacities across the three main enclosures this year, ensuring that all of our guests will be able to enjoy a little bit more space. Of course, much has changed throughout the last couple of years,

and on the track the emergence of Hollie Doyle, Cieren Fallon and Marco Ghiani represents a talented new generation of jockeys. Much remains familiar though, and I am sure that many of you will be hoping that Frankie Dettori can add to his already astonishing tally of 76 Royal Ascot winners throughout the week. Ever the showman, at the age of 51 he remains at the top of his game, and who would bet against him eventually getting close to Lester Piggott’s all-time record of 116 winners at the Royal Meeting. We are hugely grateful to QIPCO, Longines and Howden, our three Official Partners, as well as to all our Official Sponsors and Suppliers. This year we welcome Peroni Italia for the first time as the Official Beer of Ascot Racecourse. We also welcome Slingsby as our Official Gin Supplier. We are committed to playing our part in ensuring British racing maintains its position as a worldleading industry. In 2022, we are providing record prize money of £8.65 million across the 35 races – an increase of 18% on 2019 values. Two of the feature events, the Prince of Wales’s Stakes on Wednesday and the renamed Platinum Jubilee Stakes on Saturday, become the first £1 million races at Royal Ascot. Our eight Group 1 races and a total of 19 Pattern or Listed level contests

attract the greatest concentration of equine talent at a single race meeting anywhere in the world. This year we are expecting competitors from Japan, America, Australia, Ireland, France and Germany, all aiming to take on the leading British hopes. Each of the five days of Royal Ascot are World Pool events, meaning that people betting into the pool benefit from increased liquidity and better value. Hosted by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, with whom we launched the venture in 2019, many countries around the world are expected to bet into the Ascot pool. We look forward to welcoming visitors from across the globe and it will be particularly enjoyable for many friends in the racing world to see each other for the first time in three years. We hope that the millions watching on ITV, Sky Sports Racing, NBC in the USA and Green Channel Japan, as well as many other global networks, enjoy it just as much as those of us lucky enough to be present. I hope that you have a wonderful week. Yours sincerely

ew sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution, with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.

It was Queen Anne who, in 1711, first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”. 6

THE FIRST RACE MEETING The first race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters – rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bore little resemblance to modern-day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that first plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes. THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter and a racing administrator. The first permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost 50 years. In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that the Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.

BELOW: THE ASCOT GOLD CUP 1834 BY JAMES POLLARD

ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the first four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magnificent achievement, and one that Stradivarius just failed to emulate in 2021 having won the previous three renewals. 8

MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today,

RECENT HIGHLIGHTS There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006, and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013. In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat-racing season. The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later.

In 2012, Ascot Racecourse was at the very heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare Black Caviar. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it has been the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being two notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled an impressive 12 winners at the Royal Meeting. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions, including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and – more recently – the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize. #RoyalAscot

Lester Piggott Lester Piggott passed away in May this year at the age of 86. In Ascot’s three-hundred-plus-year history no jockey has dominated the Royal Meeting like him. His tally of 116 Royal Ascot winners stands alone in the modern era, a total that is unlikely to be surpassed and one that came at a time when the meeting was just four days long. 10

P

iggott’s first Royal Ascot victory came in 1952 on Malka’s Boy for trainer Walter Nightingall in the Wokingham Stakes. ‘The Long Fellow’ went on to be associated with some of the greatest horses to have graced Royal Ascot.

He won the Gold Cup a record 11 times, including a then-record threetimes on Sagaro in 1975, 1976 and 1977, one on board Le Moss and a brace with Ardross in 1981 and 1982. In modern history, he also remains the most successful jockey in the King’s Stand Stakes, Royal Hunt Cup, Norfolk Stakes, Coronation Stakes and Platinum Jubilee Stakes (formerly the Cork and Orrery Stakes). His seven winners in the King’s Stand Stakes included three for Vincent O’Brien in the 1970s as well as one of the leading post-war sprinters, Right Boy, in 1957 who he subsequently partnered to victory in the 1958 and 1959 Cork and Orrery Stakes. Of those 116 winners, he rode 18 apiece for trainers Noel Murless and Vincent O’Brien. Twice he rode eight winners at a single meeting, in 1965 and 1975. Success at Royal Ascot wasn’t limited to the saddle either as when he briefly turned his hand to training in the mid1980s he sent out Cutting Blade to win the Coventry Stakes in 1986. After famously returning to the saddle, his final winner at the Royal Meeting was College Chapel in the 1993 Cork and Orrery Stakes, at the age of 57.

the Royal Ascot Insider

Piggott went on to enjoy success as a breeder being the joint ownerbreeder of Superstar Leo who won the Norfolk Stakes in 2000. He also part-owned Mont Etoile, trained by his son-in-law William Haggas, who won the Ribblesdale Stakes in 2006. He is therefore the only known person to have ridden, trained, owned and bred a winner at Royal Ascot. A statue of Lester Piggott sculpted by William Newton was unveiled at Ascot Racecourse in 2019 and stands on the Brigadier Gerard Lawn. Speaking during the unveiling, Piggott said, “I have enjoyed some great days at Royal Ascot. Everybody looked forward to this meeting. To win the Gold Cup once is special and I was very lucky to win the race on 11 occasions. "I rode some brilliant horses in the race including Sagaro, but probably the best was a filly called Gladness. It has been a very lucky course for me." ROYAL ASCOT HIGHLIGHTS • Total Royal Ascot winners - 116 • First Royal Ascot winner – Malka’s Boy in the 1952 Wokingham Stakes • Last Royal Ascot winner – College Chapel in the 1993 Cork and Orrery Stakes • Gold Cup wins – 11 including three on Sagaro in 1975, 1976 and 1977 • Eight winners in a single Royal Ascot twice in 1965 and 1975

An instinct for success

"T

his is the most exciting time of year – the sun is shining, the horses are starting to work and all your geese are swans,” says racehorse trainer Eve Johnson Houghton.

so much that I couldn’t do it up. I recall really clearly being in the stands [during the race] and realising that we could win this.”

It’s late March, and the start of the Flat season on turf is just a few days away. By the time you read this, Eve will know which of her geese are indeed swans. Perhaps one of them will be Miss Metropolitan, the sweet chestnut threeyear-old filly that Eve trains for the Ascot Colts and Fillies Club. At this stage, anything and everything is possible.

“It was extraordinary. I was floating on air for the rest of the week. And it wasn’t a substandard race – Lord Glitters was second, and he won the race the following year and has picked up Group races all over the world since. My horse ran way above his best that day, but if that’s going to happen, why not in the Queen Anne Stakes?”

But this positive, breezy outlook is typical of the Blewbury-based trainer, exemplified by her decision in 2018 to run Accidental Agent in the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Accidental Agent, now eight, remains the central figure at Eve’s yard, and delighted everybody when winning a handicap at Newmarket last summer. He has since started 2022 in tremendous form, winning again at Newmarket in April and finishing a close second in the Victoria Cup at Ascot in May.

Owned and bred by Eve’s mother Gaie, Accidental Agent, then four, had won plenty of prize money, but in handicaps. The nearest he had come to Group class had been runner-up spot in a Listed race the previous autumn, but Eve, with the instinct and equine understanding stamped into her DNA by generations of canny, competitive horsemen and women, knew he could be better than that. “Everyone was telling me that he had no chance, but I really thought he could finish in the first four,” she says. “I remember being in the car park before racing trying to pin my Royal Enclosure badge on, and my hand was shaking the Royal Ascot Insider

Win he did, at 33/1 under stable jockey Charlie Bishop, handing Eve her first Group 1 and first Royal Ascot success.

“He’s in great form – so happy and really well,” she says affectionately. “He knows he’s the king of the castle and thinks he’s the best thing since sliced bread. His box overlooks the garden, and when you stop and talk to him, he purrs at you. We gelded him because we couldn’t bear the thought of him being a ‘bad’ stallion somewhere, and he’s here for life. “My mother has done really well with breeding some very good horses. They

and, of course, Accidental Agent,” she explains. “The latest foal we have is out of Roodle, who is the dam of Accidental Agent. She is a beautiful filly foal by Frankel, which we are all very excited about. #RoyalAscot

CHIPOTLE WINS THE ROYAL ASCOT WINDSOR CASTLE STAKES IN 2021

“My own breeding is very low key and normally with mares that I have previously trained and have ended up in my field,” she continues. “I love it, but I only do it for sheer enjoyment and don’t make any profit from it.” the Royal Ascot Insider

In 2021, Eve trained her second Royal Ascot winner when Chipotle took the Windsor Castle Stakes. “I was very lucky, because I had a box full of my friends that day – rent-a-crowd, so to speak – and to have 20 of my mates #RoyalAscot

shouting him home was so brilliant and very exciting,” she recalls. It should give hope to the many owners who don’t have millions to spend at the sales that the Havana Gold son cost just 10,000gns at the Tattersalls Ascot sale in September 2020. Chipotle was one of three horses bought to run as two-year-olds for the Woodway 20 syndicate and then to be sold – which he was, at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training sale last October for 210,000gns to the new Saudi Arabia-owned Nadj Stud operation. A cheap Royal Ascot winner sold for a thumping profit – that’s the dream, surely? Unsurprisingly, the syndicate members have signed up for another go. In fact, one of this year’s horses, Whistle And Flute, has already won at Bath and finished second on 16

Royal Ascot Trials Day at Ascot. Eve’s own pedigree has multiple links to Royal Ascot glory. Her father, the multiple Group 1-winning trainer Fulke Johnson Houghton, produced the likes of Parsimony and Posada to win what was then the Cork and Orrery Stakes (subsequently the Diamond and now Platinum Jubilee Stakes). Her grandmother, Helen Johnson Houghton, the twin sister of legendary National Hunt trainer Fulke Walwyn, was the first woman to train a Classic winner – Gilles De Retz in 1956 – but, as the Jockey Club did not allow women to hold a licence at that time, her successes were recorded under the names of male assistants. Helen was responsible for Royal Ascot winners in the 1950s and, if one #RoyalAscot

includes her, Eve is one of around 12 women trainers to have scored at this most prestigious of all meetings. “I remember longing to go to the Royal Meeting as a teenager, and having to wait until I was 18,” says Eve. “I’ve been every year since and love it. It’s my favourite meeting – the best horses run, you see all your mates, and the atmosphere is just so exciting. I always have old friends to stay on the Tuesday and Wednesday nights, and we go racing together. It’s very special.” Will there be a Royal winner for Woodway Stables in 2022? “Every year, that is my aim,” she says. “I don’t have a huge yard – around 80 horses – and I’m always trying to up the quality of the horses I train. Every year, I say I want a Royal Ascot winner and a couple of Group winners, but I really enjoy getting a horse to win any race, whatever his or her ability. I have some lovely owners, including, of course, the Ascot Colts and Fillies Club who own Miss Metropolitan, and I love seeing them get pleasure out of their horses.” Let’s hope there’s a swan – or, at least, a cygnet – waiting to unfurl its wings in Eve’s yard this year. the Royal Ascot Insider

WHAT IS THE ASCOT COLTS AND FILLIES CLUB? Since its launch in 2002, the free Colts and Fillies Club, for children aged 17 and under, has made horse racing more accessible for younger racegoers. The club offers children a unique insight into racing with a great deal of fun and excitement along the way. Membership currently stands at around 16,000 and all activities are free of charge. New members receive a metal membership badge, a welcome booklet containing information and fun activities and an Ascot pen. They can also collect a Colts and Fillies baseball cap on their first visit to Ascot. Colts and Fillies members receive regular newsletters sharing details on exclusive club events, competitions and family racedays (which feature special activities just for members). The newsletters also update members on their club horse, with opportunities to represent the club as an owner when she runs or to visit the stable to see her at home and learn all about how a racehorse is trained. A CENTURY OF

History

Julian Muscat explores how the Aga Khan III’s passion for British racing began and how his legacy continues…

O

n this day 100 years ago the first act in one of the most significant chapters in turf history unfolded at Royal Ascot. The Queen Mary Stakes was won by the Aga Khan III’s filly, Coz. Coz was the Aga Khan’s first runner in Britain. Her debut was eagerly awaited: she had been galloping with rare zest at her trainer Dick Dawson’s Whatcombe Stables, and she did not disappoint. The famous chocolateand-brown silks entered the hallowed Winners’ Enclosure at Royal Ascot, where they would be seen with increasing frequency over the next 40 years. One century later, it is no

20

exaggeration to cite Coz as the first building block in an unparalleled equine dynasty. The second would come three days later, when Tricky Aunt, also debuting for the Aga Khan, ran away with the Windsor Castle Stakes. They were the first of many such triumphs: between 1924 and 1952 the Aga Khan would be the leading owner in Britain no less than 13 times. The first of those accolades came just two years after Coz had made her winning debut. Coz was thus the trailblazer. A 5,000 guineas purchase, she was among a handful of yearlings bought on the Aga Khan’s behalf in 1921. Also among that first batch were Bombay Duck, winner of the Richmond Stakes, and

Paola, the Cheveley Park Stakes winner who won the 1923 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot the following year. The Aga Khan was firmly up and running. At the close of 1922 Coz was feted as the best two-year-old filly in Britain, and she went on to make a striking impact as a broodmare. Her 1927 foal, named Costaki Pasha, won the following year’s Chesham Stakes at the Royal Meeting, while her foal of 1928, Ruston Pasha, did likewise when dead-heating in the same race in 1929. Ruston Pasha’s victory was part of an extraordinary Royal Ascot sequence posted by the Aga Khan in a seminal year for his two-yearolds. Dawson primed four of them for the meeting – and all of them won. Qurrat-Al-Aim obliged in the Queen Mary Stakes on opening day,

Blenheim captured the New Stakes (now Norfolk) on Wednesday and Teacup the Windsor Castle Stakes on Thursday ahead of Ruston Pasha’s Chesham Stakes triumph on Friday. Although Qarrat-Al-Aim returned to Royal Ascot the following year to win the Coronation Stakes in 1930, the real star of the quartet was Blenheim, who gave the Aga Khan the first of his five victories in the Derby. The Aga Khan III was seven years old when he became the 48th hereditary leader of the Shia Ismaili Muslims on the death of his father in 1885. He was already among the racing elite in India when he first visited Britain, aged 20, in 1898. That summer he went to the Spring Meeting at Epsom, returned one month later for the Derby to watch Jeddah win at 100-1, and paid his first

visit to Royal Ascot, where he was granted a Royal Household Badge for the Royal Enclosure. Before long the Aga Khan was in the vanguard of the fashion for gentleman to wear flowers in their jacket buttonholes. It was the start of an enduring love affair with the sport. However, it wasn’t until 1904 that the Aga Khan resolved to become involved in breeding racehorses. He was urged to do so by Colonel HallWalker, later Lord Wavertree, who had established a stud in Co Kildare, Ireland. In a subsequent letter to a friend, the Aga Khan wrote: “It was entirely due to Lord Wavertree and my personal friendship for him that I started to race on the English Turf.

22

I would probably never have been known as an owner west of Suez had he not, during and after my visit to Tully in 1904, urged me to take up racing in England.” That same friendship would later prompt the Aga Khan to buy land in Ireland on which to breed horses. Most of the Aga Khan’s early purchases were fillies that would become the bedrock of his breeding operation. None was more precious to him than the filly who was bought in the second batch of yearlings acquired in 1922. At 9,100 guineas she was the most expensive yearling of that century, yet she would prove a veritable bargain. Named Mumtaz Mahal after the seventeenth-century Empress

#RoyalAscot

the Royal Ascot Insider

Consort of the Mughal Empire, the grey filly emulated Coz’s Royal Ascot triumph in winning the 1923 Queen Mary Stakes by 10 lengths. She was by The Tetrarch, one of the greatest two-year-olds of all time, out of Lady Josephine, winner of the Coventry Stakes in 1914. Mumtaz Mahal was so quick she earned herself the sobriquet “The Flying Filly”. She won five times as a two-year-old to finish top of the class, after which she claimed two important sprints the following season. However, it was as a broodmare that Mumtaz Mahal truly excelled – notably when her daughter, Mumtaz Begum, produced the pre-eminent, breed-shaping sire, Nasrullah. Other great horses descending from Mumtaz Mahal include Petite Etoile, Shergar and Zarkava. Even now, with the Aga Khan III’s grandson, Aga Khan IV, at the helm, much of the success of the Aga Khan Studs is attributable to Mumtaz Mahal and her clan. The Aga Khan’s association with Royal Ascot ran deep. He dispersed much of his bloodstock holdings during the Second World War as the racing scene contracted sharply. The Royal Meeting had not been staged since 1939 when racing returned to Ascot in 1945. Many of the traditional races were held there over a series of one-day meetings. At the first of them in June, the Aga Khan won both the

the Royal Ascot Insider

Coventry Stakes with Khaled and the Queen Mary with Rivaz. Two years later, on Princess Elizabeth’s marriage to Prince Philip in 1947, the Aga Khan gave the future Queen one of his homebred racehorses as a wedding present. Sadly however, Astrakhan was of little account; she wasn’t up to running at the Royal Meeting. But there was an infinitely more successful reprise in 2013 when Estimate, a filly given to Her Majesty The Queen by the Aga Khan’s grandson as an 80th birthday present, carried the royal silks to victory in the Gold Cup. For all his success, the Aga Khan was preoccupied with the sizeable cost of maintaining his racing and breeding empires. It was a concern he often amplified in public, so it came as no great surprise when he announced in 1954 that he was leaving Britain to race in France, where prizemoney levels were much higher. This insistence on a financial return on his investments prompted him to sell the first three of his Derby winners to the US interests, which provoked much criticism at the time. However, the Aga Khan’s famous chocolate-and-brown silks continued to be seen on British racecourses until his death in 1957. Scarcely could the scale of his impact have been envisaged when Coz blitzed to her Queen Mary Stakes victory 100 years ago.

The magnificent Windsor Greys have been faithfully drawing the carriages of royalty – and delighting crowds of spectators – since the 19th century. Behind the scenes, a lot of thought and effort goes into their selection, care and training.

nyone who has witnessed the pomp and ceremony of a jubilee procession, the State Opening of Parliament or a royal wedding – such as that of the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in 2011 – will likely have seen the majestic grey horses that proudly pull the royal carriages. Selected for their colour, temperament and stamina, the Windsor Greys (sonamed as they used to be kept at Windsor) stand at a commanding height of at least 16.1 hands (1.65 metres) at the withers – and they have been horses of choice for The Royal Family since the reign of Queen Victoria. Today, Windsor Greys draw carriages carrying Her Majesty The Queen, other members of The Royal Family, and guests on state visits. 26

Young horses are first handled at the stud at Hampton Court Palace, but training doesn’t start until they are nearly four years old, when they are moved to Windsor Castle and first get used to a bridle and saddle. Most will accept a rider on their back after six weeks, and they can then be introduced to harness work. 28

When on duty, the Windsor Greys are stabled at the Royal Mews, Buckingham Palace, which is part of the Transport Division of the Queen’s Household. Under the control of the Crown Equerry and headed by the Master of the Horse – whose symbolic responsibility for moving the monarch around the country by road dates back #RoyalAscot

nearly 1,000 years – the Mews is a living community whose staff live with their families on site and are on call for all The Queen’s public engagements. There, the horses are put into three ‘sets’ – Windsor Greys, Hacks and Back Boxes – each with eight to 10 horses housed together in separate loose boxes. A groom is assigned to care for two horses within the set, and, because horses have very individual personalities, careful thought is given to match grooms with horses, and to pair horses with compatible temperaments when pulling carriages. The Mews horses are exercised in Hyde Park and St James’s Park and on the roads around Buckingham Palace, as it’s important that they get used to London traffic. Specific training for carriage work takes place in the riding school at the Royal Mews, where the horses are taught certain movements and learn vocal commands. Young horses are also exposed to sights and sounds such as waving flags, music and cheering, so they are not frightened when they first take part in a procession. Inexperienced horses tend to be put at the back of the procession and are usually paired with an older, steadier horse until they gain confidence. The eight Windsor Greys who draw the heavy Gold State Coach are specially prepared for the occasion by pulling a carriage laden with rubber the Royal Ascot Insider

tyres. The weight is progressively increased by adding bags of sand until it reaches four tonnes. Three or four days before a big state occasion or royal procession, a rehearsal takes place early in the morning to avoid traffic and to ensure that the timings are correct. The horses travel around the country in horseboxes for royal engagements throughout the year, but in August and September they are ‘turned away’ into fields at Hampton Court Palace for a well-deserved holiday. The Queen takes an active interest in the Royal Mews, naming all horses that have been bred at the Hampton Court Stud and recognising each and every one – even though the Windsor Greys, for example, were chosen to form identical pairs where possible! She also makes the final decisions as to which carriages will be used in state processions, in discussion with the Crown Equerry. You may have seen the Windsor Greys recently at the Platinum Jubilee Pageant, drawing The Gold State Coach GREETING THE GREYS See the royal carriages, coaches, horses and stables for yourself. The Royal Mews, home to the Windsor Greys when on duty, is open to the public until 2nd October 2022. Visit rct.uk for more details. #RoyalAscot

Welcoming Our Heroes

A

scot Racecourse is again proud to welcome the three principal single Service Armed Forces charities, namely the Royal Navy and Royal Marines Charity, ABF The Soldiers’ Charity and the RAF Benevolent Fund. Each charity works tirelessly to support military personnel, past and present, and their families in times of need with a wide range of practical, emotional and financial support. They would not, however, be able to provide this vital level of care without the public’s support. Our long-term support of the charities includes a donation from the sale of certain beverages across our enclosures during Royal Ascot, which in 2019 amounted to over £17,000. Our concessionaires also donate a percentage of their sales on the days they are with us.

The charities are also our official bucket collectors on Wednesday and Friday and are always generously supported by our racegoers. You can find out more about these charities and their vital work by reading the stories on the following page.

ROYAL AIR FORCE BENEVOLENT FUND AF veteran John Lambert overpaid tens of thousands of pounds for the care he received between May and December 2020, when his local authority should have been contributing to his fees. The RAF Benevolent Fund’s advice and advocacy team stepped in and took the case all the way to the Ombudsman, ensuring no other family would be put in the same position. The Lambert family were refunded more than £45,000 after an ombudsman ruled that the council had breached its duty of care to step in. What is your favourite memory from Royal Ascot? Royal Ascot is always about a moment in time. Royal Ascot is a feeling! The beauty of the horses! The colours of the jockey silks against the green of the grass! The elegance of the men’s morning suits and, of course, the hats, which have the ability to thrill both the wearer and the observer.

Talk us through your designs and creative approach to your SS22 collection… I have an opportunity to influence how people see hats in the 21st century, so every season I develop new shapes and ideas, constantly challenging what a hat can look like. Where do you find inspiration for your designs? I am inspired by the enthusiasm of women from all over the world who love wearing hats. the Royal Ascot Insider

When they try my hats on in my shop at Elizabeth Street, London, they are transported. For all hat designers, Royal Ascot is the ultimate moment of expression of our craft. It is the reason we exist and survive! It’s also our greatest source of inspiration. #RoyalAscot

Hat wearing feels like it is having a resurgence at the moment, with many fashion houses and couture designers opting to feature them… Today, hats are worn for ultimate moments in people’s lives, and Royal Ascot is one of these moments. If you were to create the hat of all hats, what might it look like? The pursuit of creating the ‘hat of all hats’ holds the essence of what makes hat designers do what they do. The next hat is always going to be the best one of all! 39

As the voice of Owners, the ROA are consistently promoting the impact and benefits of ownership whilst working to make ownership more rewarding.

O

nce again we will be hailing our popular “ROA Owner of the Day” for Royal Ascot, which showcases an owner with a runner at the meeting. Today’s (Wednesday 15 June) ROA Owner of the Day is the Woodway 20, who own Whistle And Flute, a runner in the Windsor Castle Stakes (5.35pm). A whistle and flute (suit, in other words) will be the order of the day for thousands of gents at Royal Ascot on Wednesday, and maybe a few ladies too, and if lightning happens to strike twice it will be in the Windsor Castle Stakes as well.

40

A year ago the Listed contest went to 22-1 chance Chipotle, trained by Eve Johnson Houghton for the Woodway 20, and connections are back for more with Whistle And Flute, who comes into the race with similar credentials. Both colts had three runs under their belt coming into the meeting, with Chipotle having won his first couple of races before finishing down the field at Sandown - hence his Windsor Castle SP - while Whistle And Flute was also a winner on debut at Bath before a decent second on Royal Ascot trials day at the Berkshire track in April (the same race that Chipotle had won 12 months #RoyalAscot

earlier), but then last time at Beverley things didn’t go so well as he finished in rear in the Two Year Old Trophy Conditions Stakes. The Woodway 20 - which takes its name from the yard in Blewbury, Oxfordshire where Johnson Houghton trains - is in only its second year and to say the first went pretty well is to put it extremely mildly.

“It’s a mix of people, most of them have got to know each other pretty well, and they love it. They’ve really enjoyed themselves, and you can’t not have done really with the time they’ve had!

“The original idea was that if I bought three cheap horses, one would be okay, one might win a race and one would probably be not so good. We were not spending very much money, you are spreading your risk and “It was lovely hopefully giving people last year as there a lot of fun. It has worked weren’t too many out really well. There’s a people at Royal nice shared experience Ascot, but there and visits to the yard too.”

Chipotle turned out to be an ultra-shrewd buy at 10,000gns from breeders Theakston Stud at the Tattersalls Ascot Yearling Sale in September 2020, was enough of Chipotle, though giving the Woodway 20 a crowd - it was not only those three early capped at 12,0000 starting as one of the - so it was great outsiders in the 2021 strikes but signing off and worked out Windsor Castle, did with victory in the Listed really well,” not just scrape home, Two Year Old Trophy at he veritably bolted up Redcar, for which the considering he won by two and a first prize was £85,000 plus a round quarter lengths in a field of 27. For of drinks, and then selling a few weeks later at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in trainer and jockey Charlie Bishop, it was a second winner at the Royal Meeting Training Sale to big-spending Najd Stud following Accidental Agent in the for 210,000gns. Queen Anne three years earlier. Explaining the set-up, Johnson Houghton says: “The syndicate is in its second year. There are 20 people and they have five per cent each, so are all equal shareholders, and there are three horses. “They are all two-year-olds. They are bought and are for one year only, then sold at the end of the year; win, lose or draw, that’s what happens. the Royal Ascot Insider

“It was amazing,” recalls the trainer, a fabulous start to the syndicate. I honestly never believed it would work out like that but it did. “It was lovely last year as spectators returned, it was capped at 12,000 but it was enough of a crowd – it was a great day and worked out really well.”

Bishop is once more in the saddle on Whistle And Flute, who of course again faces a big field, albeit not quite so monstrous as took on Chipotle, with 24 declared for Wednesday’s five-furlong test for juveniles. Whistle And Flute is a son of Dandy Man out of Roderic O’Connor’s daughter Maria Ormani, and cost £13,000 at the Tattersalls Ireland September Yearling Sale, which was held in Newmarket last year due to Covid-19. “Whistle And Flute has a very similar profile to Chipotle,” says Johnson Houghton. “To dream of it happening again is madness really, but he was bought for a two-year-old syndicate, he was bought to run, so why not have a go. He deserves to be there. “I don’t think everyone from the syndicate is going but Ascot are pretty good, and if they can get you in, they will. They might not all be able to go into the paddock, but we will get everyone there who can go.” The Woodway 20 enjoyed a runner on Oaks day earlier this month when Blatant contested the Woodcote, and he too has given his owners a victory this year at Leicester, while also placing at Chester and Kempton. The son of Brazen Beau likewise looks well bought, at 20,000gns from the Tattersalls Somerville Yearling Sale, and his trainer added: “Blatant has been another winner for the Woodway 20 this year and he’s a nice horse.” the Royal Ascot Insider

RACE HISTORIES

Wednesday The Queen Mary Stakes (Group 2)

Five furlongs, Two Year Old Fillies Named after the consort of King George V, this race was first run in 1921. The Queen Mary Stakes is the first major race of the season exclusively for twoyear-old fillies. Run over the minimum distance of five furlongs and promoted to Group 2 status in 2004, it provides a useful opportunity to assess their ability and potential to perform at Group 1 level. American trainer Wesley Ward has an exceptional record in the race having saddled the winner four times since 2009, including most recently with Campanelle in 2020.

The Queen’s Vase (Group 2)

One mile, six furlongs, Three Year Olds Promoted to Group Two in 2017, the race was named to honour Queen Victoria and first run in 1838. This race became the King’s Vase in 1903 and reverted to its original name of the Queen’s Vase on the succession of Queen Elizabeth II. Run over a-mile-and-three-quarters, this contest provides a test of stamina for three-year-olds and winners of the race often go on to compete in the Gold Cup in future years. Her Majesty The Queen’s Estimate and current star stayer Stradivarius are the most recent Queen’s Vase winners (2012 and 2017 respectively) to win the historic Gold Cup in subsequent seasons.

The Prince of Wales’s Stakes (Group 1)

One mile, two furlongs, Four Year Olds & Upwards The Prince of Wales’s Stakes, first run at Royal Ascot in 1862, is named after the son of Queen Victoria (later to become King Edward VII). Originally staged over a mile and five furlongs, the race often attracted horses that had participated in the Classics. There was no Prince of Wales’s Stakes from 1946 until 1968, a year before the current Prince of Wales’s investiture in 1969, when the distance changed to one mile and two furlongs. In 2000, The Prince of Wales’s Stakes was upgraded to Group 1 status and restricted to four-year-olds and upwards.

The Duke of Cambridge Stakes (Group 2) One mile, Four Year Olds & Upwards Fillies & Mares Run as the Windsor Forest Stakes until 2013, this race was a new addition to the Royal Meeting in 2004 and part of an industry-wide initiative to encourage connections of the leading Classic generation fillies from the previous year to keep their stars in training. Run over the straight mile course, it is open only to fillies and mares aged four or over. As a Group 2 race, Group 1 winners carry a penalty, so the option of the Group 1 Queen Anne Stakes, where no penalties are carried, is still open to the very best fillies.

The Royal Hunt Cup (Heritage Handicap) One mile, Three Year Olds & Upwards The Royal Hunt Cup always provides one of the greatest spectacles of the Royal Meeting as a maximum field thunders up Ascot’s straight mile course for one of the biggest betting races of the season. First run in 1843, it was originally staged over seven furlongs and 155 yards. The current distance of a mile was established in 1955 when the straight course was re-aligned as part of the previous redevelopment.

The Windsor Castle Stakes (Listed) Five furlongs, Two Year Olds First run in 1839 over the straight mile course, this race was originally designed to attract three-year-old colts and fillies that had competed in the early season Classics. It is now run over the minimum distance of five furlongs and restricted to two-year-olds. The 2020 renewal was won by Tactical for Her Majesty The Queen, a home bred son of Toronado. Trained by Andrew Balding and ridden by James Doyle, he was The Queen’s 24th winner at the Royal Meeting.

The Kensington Palace Stakes (Handicap) Onw mile, Four Year Olds & Upwards Fillies & Mares A new handicap introduced for the first time in 2021 to be run over the Old Mile for four-year-old and upwards fillies and mares. Kensington Palace, set in Kensington Gardens, has been a residence for members of The Royal Family since the 17th century. The inaugural winner last year was Lola Showgirl, a first Royal Ascot winner for trainer David Loughnane and jockey Laura Pearson. the Royal Ascot Insider

Longines and the Equestrian World

Longines and the equestrian world have enjoyed a long history of close ties with their relentless passion and shared values. Tradition, Elegance, Performance and the quest for exploits: an unwavering commitment that dates back to the nineteenth century, only a few years after the inception of the company’s factory in the Swiss village of Saint-Imier.

T

oday, this passion is more alive than ever, with the brand’s presence in major equestrian institutions and events across the world. This time, Longines shows its firm dedication to the highly anticipated meeting in horse racing - Royal Ascot. Longines’ passion for the equestrian world dates back to 1869 when the brand created its first equestrian pocket watch found to date. Not long after, in 1878, Longines developed a famous chronograph movement, fitted in a case engraved with a jockey and his mount. Seen on the American racetracks since the late nineteenth century, this type of timepiece proved extremely popular among jockeys and horse-lovers, as it enabled its user to time performances to the second. Designed in the workshops of the factory in SaintImier, these first creations marked the beginning of Longines’ very early involvement in the equestrian world.

The name of Longines thus very quickly became associated with sports timekeeping. While the brand was constantly pushing the boundaries of precision, its involvement in the equestrian world progressively intensified. In 1912, a further step was taken when Longines concluded its first official partnership with a show jumping event in Lisbon, Portugal, marking the beginning of a long and fruitful relationship with the discipline.

the Royal Ascot Insider

Throughout the years, countless equestrian competitions enjoyed the qualities and reliability of the chronograph calibres and automated instruments that Longines had developed to time sports performances. As a result of its legitimacy and expertise, Longines’ involvement in equestrian sports today includes flat racing, show jumping, dressage, driving and eventing disciplines. Today, Longines’ engagement with the equestrian world has been further enhanced by its dedicated support for major equestrian institutions such as the Fédération Equestre Internationale (FEI), the International Federation of Horseracing Authorities (IFHA) and the International Federation of Gentlemen and Lady Riders (FEGENTRI). With these partnerships, Longines permeates all levels of equestrianism by presenting important awards in flat racing and jumping competitions such as the Longines World’s Best Racehorse and Longines World’s Best Horse Race and the Longines World’s Best Jockey Award. The brand’s presence at the pinnacle of the sport is often highlighted by its presence at the most demanding competitions of equestrianism, such as Royal Ascot, which require the highest level of precision and excellence.

Race Summary: Summar Being drawn dra middle to high has provided a significant edge in the last decade, with only onl two winners having ha exited single-figure stalls. Love Lo Reigns is therefore not perfectly perfectl pitched in box 5 but she did look the real deal at Keeneland and, with Wesley Ward talking up her chances, she is understandably tandabl favo tandably fa urite. However, there is no shortage of alternative alternati s with an array arra of unexposed winners locking horns in what is a hot renewal. The suggestion is DRAMATISED DRAMA , whose raw ra talent was there for all to see as she defied her blatant inexperience in making a winning debut at Newmarket’s Guineas meeting. With that form reading all the better now, she’s exciting. Katey Kontent and Maria Branwe Bran ll are shortlisted and, at lengthier odds, Miami Girl could be a live li ly one. Race Summary: Summar Ha Having been slowly wl away in the Derby, wly Derby NAHANNI did well to keep on into seventh and his pedigree also indicates he could relish this step up in trip. There’s a slight concern this run may ma come too soon, just 11 days da after Epsom, but otherwise ot there’s lots to like. Eldar Eldarov has shown bundles of promise when winning his first two starts and he’s second choice now up in grade and in trip. Anchorage is well worth a second look being the sole representative esentati for esentative Aidan O’Brien, who has won this race seven times since 2007, 2007 while the unexposed Gosden runner Baltic Bird is another interesting candidate. Feature Race Analysis It is a delight to see horses come from all around the globe to contest the 2022 renewal of the Prince of Wales’s Stakes once again. Lord North returns in an attempt to become only the fourth dual-winner of the prestigious race and the first to do so since the contest was promoted to Group 1 status in 2000. He is a proven Group 1 performer but is now the veteran of the field and might be vulnerable to some young talent in the five-strong field. Ryan Moore landed this contest 12 months ago with Love, a superstar filly for Aidan O’Brien, but today rides for Sir Michael Stoute. Bay Bridge looks a strong favourite to side with based off his impressive success in the Brigadier Gerard Stakes at Sandown, showing a smart turn of foot, to brush a side a strong field by five lengths. French-raider Grand Glory also made light work of her last assignment and a step up to the top ranks looks well within her reach with the 3lb weight allowance she recieves. The Joseph O’Brien-trained State Of Rest was sent off at 2/1F for the Irish Gold Cup during the Guineas weekend but finished half a length down to the thriving Alenquer, while Hideaki Fujiwara brings Shahryar across the world and could be the one to cause an upset with Cristian Demuro in the saddle.

She holds Mother Mot Earth on the form of her win in last autumn’s Sun Chariot and we may ma not have ha seen the best of her yet. Aidan O’Brien’s tough campaigner, campaigner wearing cheekpieces for the first time, may ma still pose the main threat, while the upwardly mobile Bashkirova looks well worth her place in this higher grade and is also considered. The French-trained Sibila Spain completes the shortlist. Race Predictor: NOVEMBA

He could well be a essive Listed/Group performer in the making. Second choice is Dark Shift, who has a good record here and is well treated. Astro King (third choice) and Totally tall Charming (fourth choice) are respected, tally while Desert Peace and Intellogent are other ot suggestions for the shortlist. Inevitably, vitabl several vitably, ot others also have ha possibilities in a typically typicall sizzling Royal Hunt Cup.

Race Summary: Summar Six of the last ten runnings of this race have ha been won by horses starting from stall 18 or higher, higher but stall 1 was successful in 2016 and 2021 so a low draw dra may ma not be a major disadvantage. Seismic Spirit seems likely el to blaze a trail as he did when only ely onl just caught on his debut at Churchill Downs. His trainer has won this race twice and this latest representative esentati has to be esentative feared, as does Chateau (second choice) who already has useful form and did not have ha a clear run in either of his first two starts. However, the vote goes to LITTLE BIG BEAR who has looked a classy sort in his first two outings, especially especiall when winning easily easil at Naas last month, and looks to be held in high regard.
