t is so exciting to have a full-scale Royal Ascot in operation for the first time since 2019 – even more so in this very special Platinum Jubilee year. The five days of Royal Ascot 2022 will be a fabulous display of elite Thoroughbred racing as we celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s extraordinary achievement. We all hope that another winner in the Royal colours will be added to The Queen’s current tally of 24 winners at the Royal Meeting since 1952. All of the racecourse enclosures are open again and we are thrilled

to be welcoming back everyone who wishes to attend, following a year behind closed doors and then a year with restricted crowds in 2021. We have made some reductions to the capacities across the three main enclosures this year, ensuring that all of our guests will be able to enjoy a little bit more space. Of course, much has changed throughout the last couple of years, and on the track the emergence of Hollie Doyle, Cieren Fallon and Marco Ghiani represents a talented new generation of jockeys. Much

remains familiar though, and I am sure that many of you will be hoping that Frankie Dettori can add to his already astonishing tally of 76 Royal Ascot winners throughout the week. Ever the showman, at the age of 51 he remains at the top of his game, and who would bet against him eventually getting close to Lester Piggott’s all-time record of 116 winners at the Royal Meeting. We are hugely grateful to QIPCO, Longines and Howden, our three Official Partners, as well as to all our Official Sponsors and Suppliers. This year we welcome Peroni Italia for the first time as the Official Beer of Ascot Racecourse. We also welcome Slingsby as our Official Gin Supplier. We are committed to playing our part in ensuring British racing maintains its position as a worldleading industry. In 2022, we are providing record prize money of £8.65 million across the 35 races – an increase of 18% on 2019 values. Two of the feature events, the Prince of Wales’s Stakes on Wednesday and the renamed Platinum Jubilee Stakes on Saturday, become the first £1 million races at Royal Ascot. Our eight Group 1 races and a total of 19 Pattern or Listed level contests attract the greatest concentration of equine talent at a single race meeting

anywhere in the world. This year we are expecting competitors from Japan, America, Australia, Ireland, France and Germany, all aiming to take on the leading British hopes. Each of the five days of Royal Ascot are World Pool events, meaning that people betting into the pool benefit from increased liquidity and better value. Hosted by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, with whom we launched the venture in 2019, many countries around the world are expected to bet into the Ascot pool. We look forward to welcoming visitors from across the globe and it will be particularly enjoyable for many friends in the racing world to see each other for the first time in three years. We hope that the millions watching on ITV, Sky Sports Racing, NBC in the USA and Green Channel Japan, as well as many other global networks, enjoy it just as much as those of us lucky enough to be present. I hope that you have a wonderful week. Yours sincerely

ew sporting venues can match the rich heritage and history of Ascot Racecourse. Over the past 300 years, Ascot has established itself as a national institution, with Royal Ascot becoming the centrepiece of the British social calendar and the ultimate stage for the best racehorses in the world.
It was Queen Anne who, in 1711, first saw the potential for a racecourse at Ascot (in those days called East Cote). Whilst out riding near Windsor Castle she came upon an area of open heath that looked, in her words, “ideal for horses to gallop at full stretch”. 6

THE FIRST RACE MEETING The first race meeting ever held at Ascot took place later that year, on Saturday 11th August. The inaugural event was Her Majesty’s Plate, worth 100 guineas and open to any horse, mare or gelding over six years of age. Each horse was required to carry a weight of 12 stone and the seven runners were all English hunters – rather different to the speedy thoroughbreds that race on the Flat today. The nature of the contest also bore little resemblance to modern-day racing at Ascot. That race consisted of three separate heats, each four miles long – about the length of today’s Grand National course. The winning horse would have required tremendous stamina, but sadly there is no record of who claimed that first plate. Queen Anne’s gift to racing, founding the Royal Racecourse, is marked by the tradition of opening Royal Ascot with the Queen Anne Stakes. THE FIRST RACECOURSE The racecourse was laid out by William Lowen, assisted by a team including a carpenter, a painter and a racing administrator. The first permanent building was erected around 1794 by a local Windsor builder. Holding 1,650 people, it was used for almost 50 years. In 1813, Parliament passed an Act of Enclosure, which ensured that the Ascot Heath would be kept and used as a racecourse for the public in the future. Racing at Ascot was now secure.

ROYAL ASCOT The precise origins of the Royal Meeting are unclear, as the event evolved from the first four-day meeting that took place in 1768. The meeting as it’s known today only really started to take shape with the introduction of the Gold Cup in 1807. Royal Ascot was the only race meeting held at Ascot until 1939. The Gold Cup remains the feature race of the third day of Royal Ascot, traditionally the busiest day of the week, when high fashion and exquisite millinery take centre stage alongside Flat racing’s most elite stayers. In 2009, Yeats, ridden by Johnny Murtagh and trained by Aidan O’Brien, won his fourth consecutive Gold Cup – a magnificent achievement, and one that Stradivarius just failed to emulate in 2021 having won the previous three renewals. 8
MANAGING ASCOT Although founded by a Queen and located on Crown property, the administration of Ascot is handled on behalf of the Crown by a representative appointed by the monarch. Up until 1901, the racecourse was managed on the sovereign’s behalf by the Master of the Royal Buckhounds. In 1901, Lord Churchill was appointed as His Majesty’s Representative, responsible for running the course and determining entrance to the Royal Enclosure. The Ascot Authority was established in 1913 by an Act of Parliament, with His Majesty’s Representative becoming Senior Trustee. Today,

RECENT HIGHLIGHTS There have been several landmark occasions since Ascot Racecourse reopened in 2006, and none more memorable than two special Gold Cup days – when Yeats completed his four-timer of Gold Cup wins in 2009 and when The Queen herself won the stayers’ championship with Estimate in 2013. In 2011, Ascot celebrated its tercentenary and staged the inaugural QIPCO British Champions Day, now the culmination of the European elite Flat-racing season. The great Frankel won the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes on Champions Day in 2011, and the curtain came down on the career of officially the best horse of all time when he won the Champion Stakes a year later.

In 2012, Ascot Racecourse was at the very heart of the country’s celebrations to mark The Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, with the Golden Jubilee Stakes renamed the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and won by the great Australian mare Black Caviar. Ascot has continued to cement its reputation as Europe’s premier destination for the best horses in the world. In recent years it has been the Americans who have had most success, with Tepin’s win in the 2016 Queen Anne Stakes and Lady Aurelia’s King’s Stand Stakes victory the following year being two notable highlights. The latter filly was trained by Wesley Ward, who has now saddled an impressive 12 winners at the Royal Meeting. While the grandeur of the Royal Meeting takes centre stage each June, Ascot is also renowned for hosting Europe’s premier midsummer middle-distance contest the following month. The King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes has been won by many of racing’s most distinguished champions, including Nijinsky, Mill Reef, Dancing Brave, Nashwan, Galileo and – more recently – the remarkable mare Enable, who in July 2020 made history by becoming the first horse to win three renewals of this prestigious prize. #RoyalAscot

Lester Piggott Lester Piggott passed away in May this year at the age of 86. In Ascot’s three-hundred-plus-year history no jockey has dominated the Royal Meeting like him. His tally of 116 Royal Ascot winners stands alone in the modern era, a total that is unlikely to be surpassed and one that came at a time when the meeting was just four days long. 10

P
iggott’s first Royal Ascot victory came in 1952 on Malka’s Boy for trainer Walter Nightingall in the Wokingham Stakes. ‘The Long Fellow’ went on to be associated with some of the greatest horses to have graced Royal Ascot.
He won the Gold Cup a record 11 times, including a then-record threetimes on Sagaro in 1975, 1976 and 1977, one on board Le Moss and a brace with Ardross in 1981 and 1982. In modern history, he also remains the most successful jockey in the King’s Stand Stakes, Royal Hunt Cup, Norfolk Stakes, Coronation Stakes and Platinum Jubilee Stakes (formerly the Cork and Orrery Stakes). His seven winners in the King’s Stand Stakes included three for Vincent O’Brien in the 1970s as well as one of the leading post-war sprinters, Right Boy, in 1957 who he subsequently partnered to victory in the 1958 and 1959 Cork and Orrery Stakes. Of those 116 winners, he rode 18 apiece for trainers Noel Murless and Vincent O’Brien. Twice he rode eight winners at a single meeting, in 1965 and 1975. Success at Royal Ascot wasn’t limited to the saddle either as when he briefly turned his hand to training in the mid1980s he sent out Cutting Blade to win the Coventry Stakes in 1986. After famously returning to the saddle, his final winner at the Royal Meeting was College Chapel in the 1993 Cork and Orrery Stakes, at the age of 57.

Piggott went on to enjoy success as a breeder being the joint ownerbreeder of Superstar Leo who won the Norfolk Stakes in 2000. He also part-owned Mont Etoile, trained by his son-in-law William Haggas, who won the Ribblesdale Stakes in 2006. He is therefore the only known person to have ridden, trained, owned and bred a winner at Royal Ascot. A statue of Lester Piggott sculpted by William Newton was unveiled at Ascot Racecourse in 2019 and stands on the Brigadier Gerard Lawn. Speaking during the unveiling, Piggott said, “I have enjoyed some great days at Royal Ascot. Everybody looked forward to this meeting. To win the Gold Cup once is special and I was very lucky to win the race on 11 occasions. "I rode some brilliant horses in the race including Sagaro, but probably the best was a filly called Gladness. It has been a very lucky course for me." ROYAL ASCOT HIGHLIGHTS • Total Royal Ascot winners - 116 • First Royal Ascot winner – Malka’s Boy in the 1952 Wokingham Stakes • Last Royal Ascot winner – College Chapel in the 1993 Cork and Orrery Stakes • Gold Cup wins – 11 including three on Sagaro in 1975, 1976 and 1977 • Eight winners in a single Royal Ascot twice in 1965 and 1975

From Golden To Platinum Julian Muscat looks at how changes made for the Golden Jubilee have shaped the Royal Meeting today…

O
n this day 20 years ago the Ascot executive will have donned their finest with a mixture of excitement and trepidation. A fifth day had been added to Royal Ascot for the first time in 2002, when the royal racecourse joined in celebrations commemorating Her Majesty The Queen’s Golden Jubilee. In previous years the four-day Royal Meeting was followed on Saturday by what was known as Heath Day. This was
a routine Ascot fixture governed by the regular dress code, a relaxed affair after the social whirl that went before it. The quality of racing was also less select: there was no Group race – the highest standard of racing – on the seven-race card. That would change in the blink of an eye. In January 2002 Ascot Racecourse announced a series of sweeping changes that would see the Royal Meeting extend to five days, provisionally on a one-off basis as part of the Jubilee festivities. The prospect of adding a fifth day to Britain’s most successful race meeting had been discussed informally for many years. The Golden Jubilee provided the perfect opportunity for a trial run, with no obligation to persist should it not have been successful. There was never much danger of that. With The Queen’s consent, the Ascot Authority responded to the challenge of an extra day by boosting prizemoney significantly. Nearly £500,000 was added to the pot, taking the total purse beyond £3 million for the first time. However, there was another important strand to this expansion. After lobbying the relevant European authorities, Ascot was able to upgrade the Group 2 Cork and Orrery Stakes to championship status. The six-furlong sprint, previously run on Thursday, would become a Group 1 race and feature as the highlight of the new Saturday card.

without overtly disrupting the existing daily schedule. Moreover, the Cork and Orrery would be recast as the Golden Jubilee Stakes in keeping with the occasion. “Changing the Cork and Orrery to the Golden Jubilee Stakes was a very big deal at the time,” recalled Nick Smith, Director of Racing and Public Affairs at Ascot who was then Head of Public Relations. “It happened in tandem with the race being promoted to Group 1 status, and the first time a five-day Royal Meeting was staged.
ADDEYBB WINNING THE WOLFRETON STAKES
“There were conversations with Buckingham Palace involving Her Majesty’s Representative at Ascot (the Marquis of Hartington),” Smith continued. “All such decisions are made subject to the final approval of The Queen.” One can well imagine The Queen’s delight at this extension to what was already her favourite race meeting of the year. Nevertheless, the Ascot Authority had to tread carefully. Royal Enclosure habitues are wary of change, especially to a winning formula, but the redistribution of races across the five days was completed without undue disruption to the existing format. 18
The running order over the first three days was barely disturbed. The first five races on the opening day remained intact; the only change saw the introduction of the Balmoral Stakes Handicap, a race requisitioned from Heath Day, in place of the Queen’s Vase, which moved to Friday. Day two was a carbon copy of what went before, while Thursday’s card, showcased around the Gold Cup, saw the aforementioned Cork and Orrery Stakes (now the Golden Jubilee) relocated to Saturday. It was replaced by the Hampton Court Stakes, which used to be run on Heath Day. The biggest changes came on Friday. The Hardwicke Stakes, Wokingham Stakes Handicap and Queen Alexandra Stakes moved to Saturday, to be replaced by the Queen’s Vase and two newly-minted races: the Wolferton Stakes and Buckingham Palace Stakes. And for Saturday’s integration into the royal fold, the Golden Jubilee Stakes was augmented by the aforementioned races from Thursday and Friday, together with two races from the old Heath Day. This recasting of races from Heath Day gave Ascot the opportunity to reinforce its royal links in the changing of race-names. Out went the Brunswick Fillies Stakes, the Fern Hill Stakes, the New Stakes and the Palan Stakes; in their place came races commemorating royal residences: the Sandringham Stakes, the Hampton Court Stakes, the Balmoral Stakes and the Buckingham Palace Stakes.
#RoyalAscot
the Royal Ascot Insider
“I think all of The Queen’s residences are now commemorated,” Smith noted, “so much so that it is getting harder and harder to come up with new names. There are major historical races at Royal Ascot like the Gold Cup, which stands alone, but most of the others now have a royal connection.” As for that inaugural “royal” Saturday back in 2002, it was an instant hit with the public. Attendance more than doubled, from 25,741 on the previous year’s Heath Day to 57,700. And with the racing programme also deemed a success, there was no turning back. A five-day Royal meeting was here to stay. Indeed, Saturday went from strength to strength, largely because so many more racegoers were able to attend. Within eight years it had relegated Thursday – historically the busiest day, into second place. In 2009 the Saturday crowd swelled to 78,790, almost 10,000 more than had congregated two days earlier for the meeting’s highlight, the Gold Cup. It has been that way ever since. Two decades on and it is hard to believe there were genuine concerns over the introduction of a fifth day at Royal Ascot. But the public voted with their feet, and the reprogrammed races are making their mark by the quality of horses they attract. In this respect the Golden Jubilee Stakes speaks for

itself. Ten years after its inauguration the race was recast as the Diamond Jubilee Stakes, in tandem with The Queen’s Jubilee, as it will be today, when it is run as the Platinum Jubilee Stakes. A number of its winners since 2002 have earned Champion Sprinter status, among them the Australian fireball Choisir and the majestic Black Caviar, another Aussie rocket who won all 25 of her starts to become an international icon. But that’s not all. The Hampton Court Stakes, formerly the New Stakes on Heath Day, has been won by subsequent Group 1 winners Benbatl and Hawkbill, the latter triumphant in the Eclipse Stakes. It has since been promoted to Group 3 status. And the Wolferton Stakes’ roll of honour includes the 2019 winner Addeybb, who advanced to three topflight triumphs in Australia before he returned to Ascot in October 2020 to plunder the Group 1 QIPCO Champion Stakes on QIPCO British Champions Day. A fair bit of history has been crafted in just 20 years.

BLACK CAVIAR AND LUKE NOLEN TRIUMPH IN THE DIAMOND JUBILEE STAKES
his year marks a special anniversary in Royal Ascot history. It’s exactly 10 years since the Diamond Jubilee Stakes went ‘Down Under’, thanks to the phenomenal success of unbeaten Australian sprinter, Black Caviar. Born in August 2006 at Gilgai Farm in Nagambie, Victoria, Black Caviar grew up on the Goulburn River property and moved to Swettenham Stud in December 2007 for a 10-week yearling preparation. She went on to be sold to a syndicate that included Neil Werrett, Pam Hawkes, Gary and Kerryn Wilkie, Colin and Jannene Madden, and David and Jill Taylor. Trained by Peter Moody, the filly was considered untouchable in Australia… and the Ascot authorities were keen to see her in action in Berkshire. Nick Smith, the international recruiter for the racecourse, visited Moody to enquire about her, and then went to see connections during the Melbourne Cup Carnival in November in 2011. “By this stage [Black Caviar] the Royal Ascot Insider
had superstar status,” he recalled in an interview for the Racing Post. “I went back when she won the Lightning Stakes in February 2012, and the buildup couldn’t have gone better.” Preparations complete, Ascot geared up for its red carpet arrival – and excitement grew on both sides of the globe. “Black Caviar’s Royal Ascot adventure certainly caught the imagination of the Australian public. She had a huge following and great fan club – and there is always the thing about the Aussies trying to beat the BLACK CAVIAR AND LUKE NOLEN TRIUMPH IN THE DIAMOND JUBILEE STAKES

the closing day, Saturday,” McGrath recalls. “Frankel produced a stunning show to take the Queen Anne Stakes by 11 lengths. It was like watching a world heavyweight boxing contest in terms of Frankel and Black Caviar, and in the first round Frankel had landed a knockout blow and earned the respect of all Aussie fans.” On the day of the Diamond Jubilee Stakes, Australians were there with their flags and many more held up salmon and black paddles, the mare’s owners’ colours. “Even before the race it was truly amazing – everyone wanted to see her,” McGrath continues. “All were mesmerised by the appearance of this wonder mare from Down Under.” The race itself was pure drama. Charging across a straight six furlongs, Black Caviar won by a head from the French-trained filly Moonlight Cloud, with another French raider, Restiadargent, a neck away in third. But that was only half the story. Jockey Luke Nolen sent Black Caviar past the Frankie Dettori ridden Soul inside the final two furlongs, but after establishing a lead, he began to ease

his mount. Moonlight Cloud moved up to draw almost level beforeNolen began driving again in the final strides. “In the final 50 yards I was gobsmacked; I couldn’t believe my eyes when the jockey dropped his hands. I think he mistook the position of the winning post. But once he realised his mistake he reacted and furiously got to work and managed to get her home,” says McGrath. “Afterwards there was just relief in the camp. The 30-hour flight had taken a lot out of her, but that made her win more special. Everyone knew she had class, and this proved she had guts and a big heart.” After the race, Her Majesty The Queen came to stroke the victorious mare. “Her Majesty was very appreciative of being able to pat this horse she’d heard so much about,” recalled Moody in his autobiography, A Long Way From Wyandra. WHAT HAPPENED NEXT Black Caviar ran and won three more races after her Royal Ascot triumph, taking her career total to 25 races and 25 victories. Then, in April 2013, it was announced that she had been officially retired from racing. “The connections of the horse and I decided 25 was a great number and she did us proud,” said Moody at the time. Now 15 years old, Black Caviar is at home in the paddocks of New South Wales’s Hunter Valley, where she has had seven foals – five fillies and two colts. The first was born in 2014 and the Royal Ascot Insider
was a bay filly by Exceed And Excel, and the most recent addition to the family arrived just last year. Four of her offspring have raced so far, and three – Oscientra, Prince Of Caviar and Invincible Caviar – have won. “I believe she is a good mother, but nothing she has produced so far looks like coming close to emulating her achievements on the track,” says McGrath, mentioning Black Caviar in the same breath as mares like Winx and Enable who followed her as multiple winners. “In the early races in her career she found it all easy; no one had really threatened to beat her. She’s a true great, one of the best.” A journalist of 50 years, Terry Redhead is the former racing editor of the Eastern Daily Press, and now works as a freelance racing writer.
Choisir was the first Australian-trained horse to win at Royal Ascot, landing both the King’s Stand Stakes and the Golden Jubilee Stakes for a superb 2003 double.
Takeover Target won the King’s Stand Stakes in 2006, Miss Andretti won the same race the following year and in 2009 Scenic Blast made it three wins in four years in that contest.
Out of a total of 37 runners to date, Australia has had six victories at the Royal Meeting.

he challenge of making a trophy is about more than producing an object; it’s about creating a timeless symbol of an iconic event, and recognising all the time, effort, skill and even blood, sweat and tears expended by each competitor. Taking on this responsibility is Garrard. The creator of royal crowns and jewels, the America’s Cup and the ICC Cricket World Cup – among many other famous items – Garrard is the Official Trophy, Silverware and Glassware supplier of Royal Ascot. It’s also a key name in this year’s Ascot Style Guide, thanks to its impeccably crafted luxury fine jewellery. The relationship between Garrard and Royal Ascot is a long-standing one, with Garrard creating the very first Gold Cup all the way back in 1842. Today, designing and creating a trophy fit for Royal Ascot is entrusted to Design and Development Director Claire Scott. “The process of designing and creating the Royal Ascot trophies takes almost a year from design ideas to the finished pieces,” Claire explains. “The manufacturing stage takes approximately six months and involves many skilled craftspeople, each one highly accomplished in his or her specific craft. The processes include spinning, shaping the flat metal into a ‘cup’ shape on the lathe, the hand-engraving of race names,

hallmarking the piece at Goldsmiths’ Hall, polishing and, of course, the many silversmithing techniques used to create and apply the details. “Technology has been embraced in the silversmithing craft, and computer-aided design helps to add accuracy to the finer details such as the lid finials. But these advances complement the age-old techniques still used by silversmiths, and much of the work is still carried out using traditional methods. I believe this is what makes a trophy such an appropriate symbol – the skill required to forge such a magnificent piece mirrors that of the race winners.”

It’s clear that this is an art form in itself, which takes as much thought as it does finesse. “As with all types of design, you need to have a very good understanding of the production process – in this case, the skills of the craftspeople who create the trophies act as a starting point for our design vision,” Claire says. “The combined heritage of Garrard and Royal Ascot provides endless sources of inspiration, and there is a huge sense of responsibility to capture the importance and glory of winning such a historic race as the Gold Cup in a trophy that the winner will treasure forever.”
Crucially, this enduring heritage is still very much an active part of the work Garrard carries out today. “I feel in an extremely privileged position to have access to the Garrard archives, housed in the vault at the Albemarle Street flagship store, to feed the design process,” Claire enthuses. “The archives are a real treasure trove and the historic commissions are a rich source of inspiration. I can’t imagine finding this feeling anywhere else.” In light of this, seeing the winners finally lifting lifting the trophy must be quite something. “The entire team at Garrard feel an immense pride, having worked

so hard to bring the design to life,” Claire agrees. “The atmosphere is truly wonderful at Royal Ascot and it is so exciting to be there and share in the joy and celebration of the winners.” The irony of the trophy-maker’s life is that they do not receive that which they create. With everyone focusing on the person winning the trophy, its creator can be somewhat forgotten. At first this seems unfair, but then, on closer examination, you realise that it is the ultimate compliment. If they have done their job so perfectly that no one can imagine an alternative, this is an insideout accolade.

All The Queen’s horses Nothing receives a bigger cheer at Royal Ascot than when Her Majesty The Queen’s famous silks are first past the post. Over the years many horses have carried those royal colours to victory – Terry Redhead looks back at some of them 28

W
hen Tactical, trained by Andrew Balding and ridden by James Doyle, won the Windsor Castle Stakes in 2020, it was Her Majesty The Queen’s 24th Royal Ascot winner. That victory came 67 years after her first success: Choir Boy’s win in the Royal Hunt Cup in 1953, just 15 days after the country had enjoyed the pomp and ceremony of The Queen’s Coronation. In October 2021, The Queen’s contribution to racing was marked when she became the first entry into the QIPCO British Champions Series Racing Hall of Fame in the Special Contributor category, in recognition of her unwavering commitment to and long-standing patronage of the sport.
first victory with Monaveen at Fontwell in 1949, those silks have recorded more than 1,800 winners for The Queen, who has twice been champion owner, in 1954 and 1957. Over the years, Royal Ascot has been a highlight of the racing calendar for The Queen, and she has graced the Berkshire course with plenty of success. Here are five of Her Majesty The Queen’s most notable victories…
The Queen’s father, King George VI, and great-grandfather, King Edward VII, also used the famous royal colours of purple, gold braid and scarlet. Since her AUREOLE | 1954 winner A year after Choir Boy’s victory, Aureole struck gold in the 1954 Hardwicke Stakes. Sired by top-performing stallion Hyperion, Aureole had been bred by King George VI and was the first horse The Queen inherited from her father. As a three-year-old, the colt had become a favourite of The Queen, finishing second in the Derby and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes. In the 1954 Hardwicke Stakes, trained by Cecil Boyd-Rochfort and ridden by Eph Smith, the Royal Ascot Insider
Aureole found trouble in running before eventually getting the better of French raider Janitor, giving The Queen her second Royal Ascot win. This success, on the last day of the Royal Meeting, was part of a double for The Queen, with Landau taking the Rous Memorial Stakes under Sir Gordon Richards. After his victory, Aureole went on to win the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes, the race named after The Queen’s parents, helping Her Majesty The Queen to become the country’s leading owner that year. #RoyalAscot

COLOUR SERGEANT | 1992 winner The 1992 Royal Hunt Cup held success for the Lord Huntingdon-trained Colour Sergeant, who held on by a neck to defeat northern raider Gymcrak Premiere and end a 13-year wait for another royal success at the meeting.
Thirty-one runners lined up, but it was The Queen’s horse that prevailed to provide a shock 20/1 success. It was Her Majesty The Queen’s first Royal Ascot win since those of Expansive and Buttress in 1979.
David Harrison, an apprentice jockey, rode one of the biggest victories of his career in what was Colour Sergeant’s first run of the 1992 racing season.
Harrison became Champion Apprentice jockey in 1992, with 56 winners, and also claimed the Lester Award for ‘Apprentice Jockey of the Year’
PHANTOM GOLD | 1995 winner A bay mare by Machiavellian, out of Trying For Gold, Phantom Gold, the great-granddaughter of The Queen’s broodmare Amicable, was trained traine at West Ilsley by Lord Huntingdon. In 1995, she won w the Ribblesdale Stakes, to give jockey Frankie Franki Dettori his only royal winner at Royal Ascot to date. There was a select field of seven fillies in i the Ribblesdale that day. Drawn one, Phantom Phanto Gold chased the leaders for the first two furlongs furlong and remained prominent throughout. Dettori took it up more than a furlong out and she ran on well w to beat Irish raider Tillandsia, under Mick Kinane for trainer David Loder, by one and a quarter lengths. length Phantom Gold went on to end her racing raci career in perfect style by winning the Geoff Geoffrey rey Freer Fre Stakes in the following year, at the age of four.

ESTIMATE | 2012 and 2013 winner Perhaps the most famous of all of The Queen’s Royal Ascot winners is Estimate, the first horse to give a reigning monarch victory in the Gold Cup. In 2012, the filly had taken the Queen’s Vase. Then, the following year, again ridden by Ryan Moore and trained by Sir Michael Stoute, this daughter of Monsun spiritedly fought off her competitors in the most prestigious race of the week. Turning into the final straight, Moore pushed Estimate to the front and despite being challenged by Simenon and Top Trip, the mare, foaled in 2009, held on by a neck to land the blue riband event in a near- photo finish.
FREE AGENT |2008 winner Free Agent, trained by Richard Hannon Snr and ridden by Richard Hughes, ended a nine-year Royal Ascot drought for The Queen that stretched back to the 1999 victory of Blueprint in the Duke of Edinburgh Stakes. The 2008 Chesham Stakes winner triumphed in what was only his second career start, taking The Queen’s Royal Ascot winners tally to 20. Free Agent produced a battling success in the seven-furlong contest. Held up in the rear in the early stages, the 7/2 joint favourite stormed from last to first to win by two and a quarter lengths from his fellow market leader, Seaway.

Any Excuse for a Holiday 32

As the voice of Owners, the ROA are consistently promoting the impact and benefits of ownership whilst working to make ownership more rewarding. Once again we will be hailing our popular “ROA Owner of the Day” for Royal Ascot, which showcases an owner with a runner at the meeting.
T
oday’s (Saturday 18 June) ROA Owner of the Day is Any Excuse For A Holiday, who own Asgoodassobergets, a runner in the Golden Gates Stakes (5.35pm). It will have been a long wait for a couple of the British yards involved in the 34th race of Royal Ascot 2022, as they are having their first runner of the week. One of the trainers is Lambournbased Tom Ward, who has been climbing the ladder since his first runners in 2019 and is represented by the interestingly-named Asgoodassobergets, owned by the equally eye-catching Any Excuse For A Holiday. Ward says: “The horse’s name is self-explanatory I suppose, but I’ve never really delved into it. There must have been a story behind it I’m sure. It’s a good name and something a bit different. It takes a bit of reading but you get it eventually! He’s called Jim in the yard.” Asgoodassobergets, or Jim, looks far more than a social runner on the final day of the Royal meeting in the Golden Gates Stakes, given he has won two of his three starts, though much socialising will be undertaken around the Royal Ascot Insider
his appearance. Asked about Any Excuse For A Holiday, Ward says: “They’re a bunch of Australian guys who were keen to come over for Royal Ascot, and they’re pretty much all here, which is great. “They’ve been locked down for the last two or three years, as we all have. The name correlates with the fact they can get themselves over here and be able to watch their horse at Royal Ascot. “There are about 15 I know of, but it’s a big syndicate. The guys have had horses in Ireland as well. Saturday should be fun.” While the three-year-old will be providing ongoing fun for his owners, the trainer and his team will have only a limited amount of time to make the most of his talents. Ward explains: “The horse is going to go down to Annabel Neasham’s at the end of the year. She originally bought the horse out of France, sent him to me for this season, and once he has had his campaign here as a three-year-old, he’ll go down there for the spring in Australia.” Whether Asgoodassobergets, who was bred by Dermot Cantillon out of #RoyalAscot
33
Haafhd’s daughter Little Alice, goes to Australia as a Royal Ascot winner will be known soon enough. The mile and a quarter handicap he contests is typically competitive, with a maximum field declared and the vast majority of the runners on the up. Ward’s colt is one such, having won at Lyon Parilly on his second start in France for previous trainer Edouard Monfort, and then justifying favouritism on the all-weather at Wolverhampton in April over a mile and a half. He won there by half a length under Richard Kingscote. “There are a lot of unexposed types in the race,” says Ward. “Our horse has been showing all the right signs at home. Although it might have looked fairly hard work, he actually won quite nicely at Wolverhampton, it was easier than it looked. “He was still hard on the bridle at the furlong pole, hence why we’re dropping him back to a mile and a quarter, which we think is more his trip. “After he won at Wolverhampton we thought he should be able to get in a race at Royal Ascot off a mark of 88, near the bottom of one of the handicaps. I had him in the King George V but prefer the mile-and-a-quarter option. It’s always a bit of a risk, not knowing whether for sure you’ll get in, but I thought it was pretty much guaranteed for both races off 88. “That’s why he has not run since. He’s been working well at home, he had 34
a nice away day last week and he’s in great shape.” Royal Ascot week has been warm and dry to date, and while the temperatures are set to remain high on Saturday, it is the one day of the five where there is the potential for a bit of rain, which Ward for one would welcome. “The ground is on the quick side but I’m hoping there’s a bit of rain about on Saturday to take a little bit of the sting out of the ground,” he says. He continues: “He had some solid form in France and the form has worked out okay from his Wolverhampton run. Hopefully he’s a nice horse going forward. He’s still learning his trade and should give the owners a lot of fun. “We’ll see how he jumps out and we’ll leave it to Jim [Crowley], he knows his way around. It’s just about being uncomplicated, getting into a rhythm, hopefully there’s a bit of pace on, we’ll ride him for a bit of luck and away we go.” The Ward stable has had a quiet week all round, having not had a runner since Monday, but June has certainly been kind. “We’ve had a good month, they’ve all been running well,” says the trainer. “We’ve had three winners and beyond that they’ve all been competitive, so that’s good.” #RoyalAscot

RACE HISTORIES
Saturday The Chesham Stakes (Listed)
Seven furlongs, Two Year Olds Named after the third Baron Chesham, who was the last Master of the Buckhounds from 1900 to 1901. First run in 1919, the Chesham Stakes replaced the first leg of the Triennial Stakes, which had been run over five furlongs for two-year-olds. Now a Listed contest, the race takes place over the longer distance of seven furlongs and is restricted to youngsters whose sire or dam won at ten furlongs or more. It was won in 2019 by the Champion two-year-old that year, Pinatubo, in a track record time.
The Jersey Stakes (Group 3)
Seven furlongs, Three Year Olds The Jersey Stakes replaced the second leg of the Triennial Stakes in 1919. Named after the fourth Earl of Jersey, who was the Master of the Buckhounds between 1782 and 1783, this specialist seven-furlong contest is framed for three-year-olds who have yet to win a Group 1 or Group 2 race, but have often competed at that level, including in the Guineas.
The Hardwicke Stakes (Group 2)
One mile, four furlongs, Four Year Olds & Upwards Named after the fifth Earl of Hardwicke, Master of the Buckhounds between 1874 and 1879, the race was first run in 1879. The Group 2 contest continues to attract the best older middle distance horses and is often an informative guide to the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes in July. It is run with no Group 1 or 2 winners’ penalties as a quasi-Group 1 race with top level horses regularly competing.
The Platinum Jubilee Stakes (Group 1)
Six furlongs, Four Year Olds & Upwards First run in 1868, this six-furlong contest was originally named after Lord Cork, another Master of the Buckhounds, and known as the Cork and Orrery Stakes. 42

Royal Ascot’s most prestigious sprint was given a new name – the Golden Jubilee Stakes - and elevated to Group 1 status to celebrate The Queen’s Golden Jubilee in 2002. Ten years later, it assumed the mantle of the Diamond Jubilee Stakes and now it will be run as the Platinum Jubilee Stakes. In 2015, it became a race for four-year-olds and upwards, as the three-year-olds have the Commonwealth Cup option. It is routinely won by some of the best sprinters in the world, including Black Caviar, Undrafted and Blue Point in recent years.
The Wokingham Stakes (Heritage Handicap)
Six furlongs, Three Year Olds & Upwards The inaugural running of the Wokingham Stakes took place in 1813, making this race the oldest handicap at Royal Ascot. This famous sprint is named after the market town seven miles from Ascot Racecourse, and the first dual winner was appropriately also named Wokingham (1881 and 1882). Over the years, the race has developed a reputation as a fiercely competitive handicap and one of the major betting heats of the season.
The Golden Gates Stakes (Handicap)
One mile, two furlongs, Three Year Olds The penultimate contest at Royal Ascot was among the six prizes added to the race programme in 2020 and one of three newly named contests to be staged. The Golden Gates are the ceremonial entrance point as the Royal Procession arrives at the top of Ascot’s famous Straight Mile. Her Majesty The Queen graciously consented to the race title which is run over a mile and a quarter for three-year-olds only. The inaugural running proved a high-class contest with the winner, Highland Chief, subsequently being placed at Group 2 level.
The Queen Alexandra Stakes (Conditions)
Two miles, six furlongs, Four Year Olds & Upwards Run over the marathon trip of two-and-three-quarter miles, the Queen Alexandra Stakes is not only the longest race of the meeting, but also the longest contest run under Flat racing rules. Named after the consort of King Edward VII, the race was first run in 1864 as the Alexandra Plate over three miles. It will always be associated with Brown Jack, arguably Royal Ascot’s greatest equine legend, who won the race on six consecutive occasions between 1929 and 1934. The Queen Alexandra Stakes always closes the meeting and, perhaps because of its extreme distance in a time when so much emphasis is on speed, it has become a national institution and is affectionately supported by regulars. the Royal Ascot Insider

David Howden reflects on the start of Howden’s Partnership with Ascot Racecourse What a pleasure it is that we can all once again enjoy a proper British summer to the full. Royal Ascot is undoubtedly the highlight of both the social and racing calendars, and this year, ar as we ar, celebrate The Queen’s Platinum Jubil Ju ee, it is a particularl special week. particularly Man of us here at Ascot share Her Majesty’s Many passion for horses and her love lo of watchi wa ng them compete on this historic racecourse. I initially learnt to ride when I was nearly fifty as I wanted to have ha a common interest with my daughters as they grew older. Their love lo of horses has clearly clearl rubbed off on me and it’s hard to believe that less than a decade later, here I am an owner and breeder, eeder inve eeder, in sting in what has become one of my greatest passions. My own interest in horses, coupled with the Howden group’s long history in equine insurance as part of our sports & entertainment team, meant becoming an official off partner of Ascot Racecourse in 2021 was a perfect fit - two proudly oudl British businesses, both with a global outlook. oudly Such a global outlook has led to the expansion of the Howden group into 45 countries, with our reach stretching across racing world hot spots such as Australia, Singapore and Hong Kong. That expansion has also been reflected closer to home. This past year we have ha welcomed both Aston Lark and A-Plan into their new home here with Howden, making us the largest insurance broker in the UK with 6,500 colleagues, more than 1.5million clients and 160 offices off across the country. country As well as our partnership with Ascot, our interest across the equine world continues with our in lvement with Cornbury House Horse Trials and the introduction of a new programme with British invo Eventing – ‘The Howden Way’ Wa – which supports young horses and riders on their journey to be the best. A real highlight in this first year of Howden’s partnership with Ascot was the Christmas Racing Weekend we supported in December. Many Man of our clients, staff and friends joined us to enjoy a love lo ly family famil day da out to start the festive ti season, and I am particularly tive particularl looking forward to it again this Christmas. That’s what really all makes these events so special - not just welcoming guests but seeing how much care, ally at attention and hard work goes in to each and every race day da here at Ascot, from all the behind the scenes staff to the jockeys and horses. So with a great day da out promised here at Royal Ascot, I’d like to say sa a big thank you to all invo in lved and hope everyone picks a winner or two. 48

Race Summary: Summar This year’s Hardwicke largely el revolves around whether HURRICANE ely HURRIC LANE, who won two Classics last term and finished third in the Arc, returns from his layo la ff in top form. He’ll be hard to beat provided he runs to somewhere near his rating. Second choice is Broome who has plenty of smart form, including a solid effort in this contest last year. Third Realm would be interesting if the ground happens to turn softer than good, while Mostahdaf and Solid Stone are likely el to ely perform well provided they stay the distance. Feature Race Analysis It looks to be a fascinating renewal of this year’s Coronation Stakes, with John and Thady Gosden finally giving the unbeaten Inspiral the greenlight after her impressive juvenile campaign. The smart filly had Cachet three lengths behind in the Fillies Mile at Newmarket, but she has race fitness on her side following an impressive victory in the 1000 Guineas, with Prosperous Voyage just a neck behind. The trio of Sandrine, Discoveries and Guineas favourite Tenebrism were all behind George Boughey’s filly at Newmarket so will have a bit to find, while Mangoustine got the better of Cachet in a Group 1 in France. With no Godolphin horse in the race, William Buick gets the leg up on the in-form Spendarella who has been on a roll on home soil in America and Jose Ortiz will be hoping to land the spoils with Pizza Bianca, the other American-trained horse in the 12-strong field. Rolling The Dice, Honey Girl and the very lightly-raced Grande Dame all have a bit to find on the official figures but all could be in with an each-way chance.

Race Summary: Summar Fresh cannot be faulted on his course form and he was unfortunate to bump into Rohaan in an excellent running of this race 12 months ago. However, if he fails to run up to form it will probably obabl obably be because the ground is faster than ideal as this will be his first attemp at t on ground firmer than good. Blackrod is improving all the time and he rates the main danger to SILVER SIL SAMURAI who has made a big impression as a sprinter of late and it’s rare to see a 6f handicap won in such flamboyant style st as in his recent Hayd Ha ock success. Asjad also enters the reckoning with the return to a stiff 6f likely el to suit, while First Folio will love ely lo the drying ground and is also considered. Race Summary: Summar As is now tradition, Royal Ascot closes with the Flat season’s longest race. The entire complexion of it would change dramatically dramaticall should there be sufficient rain for Trueshan to take his chance, in which case he would take some stopping on these terms. However, as things stand, preference is for WORDSWORTH. OR ORTH. He had flashes of form last year that his riva ri ls can merely el ely dream about (even Trueshan) and, give gi n how he was boxing on at the finish of the 2 miles Sagaro Stakes here in April, it would be a surprise should his stamina fail him. Last year’s principals Stratum and Calling The Wind have ha big runs in them and, as Andre Fabr Fa e’s only onl runner here all week, it wouldn’t be a bolt from the blue to see Timour get invo in lved, for all that he’ll be entering unknown territory a long way wa from home over this extreme distance.
