SUMMER MILE RACING WEEKEND - 14 TH - 15 TH JULY

Welcome to Royal Ascot Trials Day presented by Howden. The start of the Flat season is always an exciting time of the year as we look ahead to all the action that will play out at Ascot throughout the summer months.

We are thrilled to be offering record prize money of more than £18 million across our 17 Flat meetings this year, excluding the industry owned QIPCO British Champions Day in October.

Last year we saw six of the horses in the top ten of the Longines World’s Best Racehorse rankings at Ascot, covering four different countries They were led by Baaeed, the best turf horse in the world in 2022, as well as Real World and the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes winner Pyledriver. The King George runner-up, Torquator Tasso, represented Germany while the Gold Cup winner Kyprios came from Ireland and the King’s Stand Stakes victor Nature Strip flew the flag for Australia.

We hope to welcome many more of the world’s best again this year, starting today with a high-class card including Group 1 winners Trueshan and Mischief Magic alongside two Royal Ascot winners from last year, Bradsell and Coltrane.

Our grateful thanks go to Howden, one of our Official Partners, who are supporting Royal Ascot Trials Day this year.

Our third race promotes Naas Racecourse’s own Royal Ascot Trials Day which takes place on Sunday 21st May. That card is often a rich source of Royal Ascot form clues. Meditate won there last year before going on to win the Albany Stakes so it will be worth keeping an eye on the Naas results again this year.

We are also delighted to have the British Racing School with us today as they celebrate their 40th anniversary.

Our last race is run in the memory of Svend Kold whose family and friends are here today, as we all mark his great contribution to racing at Ascot as a key member of the racecourse veterinary team for over thirty-five years. He is greatly missed and you will find a fuller tribute to Svend within the racecard.

Our next meeting is the Peroni Italia Nastro Azzurro May Racing Weekend, the final chance to visit Ascot before the Royal Meeting. We hope to see you then.

Yours sincerely,

Your guide to all of today’s races 20-50

PAGES 20-23

1st Race 1. 30pm

The Howden Manny Mercer Apprentice Handicap Stakes

This is a one mile handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 76 to 95 In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130

PAGES 26-27

2nd Race 2.05pm

The Royal Ascot Two-Year-Old Trial EBF Conditions Stakes

(Sponsored by Howden) (GBB Race)

This race is a five furlongs conditions stakes for two-year-olds. The runners in this type of race are subject to specific conditions that often revolve around age or sex, or confine the race to horses that have yet to win above a particular level. In this instance, this race is restricted to two-year-olds which are EBF eligible.

PAGES 30-31

3rd Race 2.40pm

The Naas Racecourse Royal Ascot Trials Day British EBF Fillies’ Novice Stakes (GBB Race)

The third race on the card is a Novice Stakes, run over a distance of one mile. There are a variety of reasons why the three-year-olds in this race are still light on experience. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career.

PAGES 36-37

4th Race 3.15pm

The Longines Sagaro Stakes (Group 3) (A Gold Cup Trial)

One of the feature races of the day is this two mile Group 3 race for four-year-olds and upwards. A race which can only be bettered by a Group 1 or 2, many of the runners will have already posted form well above average and some may use this as a stepping-stone to even greater things Initially, the weights are allocated on the basis of age and sex before penalties are awarded to horses which have won above a certain level prior to lining up here –3lb to Group 3 winners, 5lb for a Group 2 or 7lb to those successful in a Group 1.

PAGES 40-42

5th Race 3.50pm

The British Racing School 40th Anniversary Commonwealth Cup Trial Stakes (Group 3)

The second of our feature races, this six furlongs race for three-year-olds is a Group 3 contest and will attract some of the speediest juveniles around this season. Unlike in a handicap when a horse’s official rating reflects the weight that they must carry, in a Group 3 all runners carry the same weight regardless of any previous form. In this case colts and geldings carry 9st 3lb and fillies 9st although any runner which has already won a Group 1 or 2 race will be issued with a 4lb penalty

PAGES 44-45

6th Race 4.25pm

The Howden Bloodstock Paradise Stakes (A Queen Anne Stakes Trial) (Listed Race)

Our penultimate race, this one mile contest for four-year-olds and upwards is a Listed race; a race that can only be bettered by a Group 1, 2 or 3 race. Many of the runners in this race will have already shown themselves to be talented and this race provides a perfect medium for them to be tested against a better class of rival before making the jump into a Group race. Initially, the weights are set at 9st 5lb for colts and geldings and 9st for fillies before penalties are awarded to horses that have previously won above a certain level – 3lb for a Listed race victory, 5lb for a Group 3 success and 7lb for a Group 2 win.

PAGES 48-50

7th Race 5.00pm

The Svend Kold Memorial Handicap Stakes (Sponsored By Howden)

Our finale is a five furlongs handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 66 to 85 To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 85 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80

Longines is very proud to actively support the world of equestrian sport. As Title Partner, Official Timekeeper or Official Watch of the most important competitions, Longines is constantly strengthening its traditional and enduring commitment to equestrian sport worldwide. The Swiss brand has been associated with the equestrian world since its inception. The oldest known Longines watch decorated with equestrian motifs dates from 1869, and ushered in a handsome series of equestrian-themed pocket watches. The brand’s early ties with horses encouraged the watchmakers of Saint-Imier to pursue advances in sports timekeeping for equestrian competitions In 1878, the winged hourglass brand developed its first chronograph movement, the legendary 20H. In addition, the Swiss watch brand was associated for the first time with a show jumping event in 1912. As a result of its legitimacy and expertise, Longines’ involvement in equestrian sports today includes flat racing, show jumping, dressage, driving and eventing disciplines.

21. Weight (stones/pounds)

22. Official BHA Rating

The BHA handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change in rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. For novice steeple chasers, their latest hurdle race rating may be shown until such time as the handicappers allot a separate steeple chase rating. Such ratings are prefixed by the letter h.

23. Jockey’s name and photo

If there is a number next to the name, this indicates that the jockey can claim that amount in weight (lbs) off the stated riding weight.

The safety and welfare of horses and jockeys is paramount throughout the year at Ascot. In recent years we have invested significantly to improve our facilities on and off the track to ensure we provide the very best care and attention for all participants Nowhere is this better demonstrated than in the changes made to the racing surface itself during the redevelopment in 2006.

The key elements of the project were to camber the home and old paddock bends and to remove the road crossings over the track, replacing them with underpasses. This created a safer surface for the horses, where previously some less experienced runners had occasionally shied at the differing surfaces.

Further improvements to equine welfare provision were made as part of a £700,000 project to create an enhanced unsaddling area in 2016. Increased in size to accommodate large field races more comfortably, the Unsaddling Enclosure Lawn is positioned to benefit from maximum shade

from the crown of an adjacent mature tree as well as a repositioned tulip tree, which sits to the south of the oval. Equine misting fans were also installed to aid with post-race cooling of horses.

Four specifically qualified equine vets are on duty every raceday, dedicated to the welfare of all the horses. During each race, vets follow the runners by car and can respond to and attend a casualty generally within a minute – as fast as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties.

Ascot’s two permanent veterinary boxes are supplemented with an X-Ray machine for the major meetings to assist with swift diagnosis before administration of treatment on site or any movement necessary to equine hospitals. There are two equine ambulances on course at all times and three ambulances for any incidents involving injuries to jockeys.

The jockeys’ facilities at Ascot include a medical treatment room, rest rooms and a dedicated room for physiotherapy

A very warm welcome to Royal Ascot Trials Day presented by Howden.

At Howden, we are passionate about insurance and have experts in everything from Sport & Entertainment to Climate Risk, Fine Art to Marine and Private Wealth to more than one hundred A-Plan branches on high streets.

Today’s racing is a particular treat for us though, as it gives us a chance to introduce our newly expanded Bloodstock team –an enhancement to an industry we already support.

Our Bloodstock and Equine team now stands at 18 specialists dedicated to the insurance needs of the thoroughbred and wider equine industry The team includes some of the most experienced brokers in the bloodstock market and has the capabilities and insurer relationships to place bloodstock risks across the globe.

We aim to provide a service that can’t be beaten from a team that truly understands the day to day demands on our clients. We serve an industry need and strive to be

the best option for owners, trainers and breeders.

The growth in our equine team is mirrored by the growth of the Howden Group, one of the largest independent insurance intermediary groups in the world. Headquartered in London, we have more than 14,000 professionals across over 45 countries ready to advise both individuals and businesses on all their insurance needs

Howden are proud partners of Ascot Racecourse, having come on board in May 2021 in time for that year’s Royal Ascot. Both Ascot and Howden are proud of our uniquely British heritage, and we look forward to seeing the partnership develop further over the course of the next few years It’s a great match for the best of British insurance broking to work alongside the best of British racing.

We hope you enjoy your day!

The Howden Manny Mercer Apprentice Handicap Stakes is run in memory of Emmanuel ‘Manny’ Mercer, one of the leading riders in the 1950s. Manny tragically lost his life at Ascot following an accident at the start of the Red Deer Stakes in 1959 when his mount, Priddy Fair, reared at the start.

He rode 18 Royal Ascot winners in total and enjoyed Classic success winning the 1,000 Guineas and 2,000 Guineas during his career as well as being runner-up in the 1954 Jockeys’ Championship. His brother was Joe Mercer, jockey to Queen Elizabeth II and a former champion himself.

We were delighted to recently announce our first ever Equine Ambassador, Side Glance, who will form a central part of the Ascot Racecourse Supports programme, helping to engage people in the sport of horse racing and showcase the life that racehorses live once they finish racing. Formerly a top-level winning racehorse owned by Sheikh Fahad and trained by Andrew Balding, Side Glance raced 40 times between 2009 and 2015, running around the world in Britain, Australia, America, Singapore, Hong Kong, Canada and Dubai. That included ten appearances at Ascot itself, including winning the Paradise Stakes on this card in 2011 and finishing third behind the mighty Frankel in the 2012 Queen Anne Stakes

Now 16-years-old, he has been enjoying a new career based with Leanne White at Kingsclere who looked after him throughout his racing days He was initially retrained for showing and in recent years has been learning dressage while Leanne also uses him regularly as part of her work as an Instructor for the National Horseracing College

Now he is helping Ascot Racecourse to develop important links with the local community as part of the Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) initiative Horses For Courses.

The scheme is being rolled out across the country and for Ascot in particular, Side Glance will offer people the chance to interact more closely with racehorses and learn about what they do when they finish racing.

He has already welcomed a group of school children from Ascot Heath Primary to Ascot on 23rd March as part of a behindthe-scenes tour of the racecourse. He will appear at similar events throughout the year and also on specific racedays, most notably when Ascot race on Saturday 9th September which is the start of National Racehorse Week.

Side Glance will also play a central role in the 2023 Royal Ascot marketing campaign which went live recently, appearing on one of the still image adverts

Ascot Racecourse Supports is delighted to announce its sponsorship of Strength and Learning Through Horses (SLTH)

- London’s largest dedicated equine assisted therapy and education charity

Based in Barnet, they offer life changing mental health and education services via equine assisted therapy and horsemanship programmes for young people aged 4-25

The charity is in the process of creating a new, purpose-built site on 30-acres of land which has been leased to them from Barnet Council. In February 2023, a brand-new arena was constructed which has been sponsored by the Ascot Racecourse Supports programme; enabling the charity to continue their work which currently helps 400-500 young people per year

The site is set to be four times the size of their old base, helping to secure the future of the charity in North London to allow for increased capacity, bespoke facilities, better accessibility and improved welfare for current and future horses.

It will also enable the expansion of their racehorse retraining programme, which has already successfully retrained three ex-racehorses who were not suited to more traditional retraining or rehoming programmes

“The horses engage the young people in a way that nothing else can; whether they love them or hate them, even if they say, ‘I don’t want to be here, I don’t want to take part’, when the horses start galloping around there is no way they haven’t got a thought or a comment – that’s how we engage students in this work.”

With their services in need more than ever and funding required to complete their ambitious plans, they continue to welcome support from the equine community to ensure they can meet the growing demand and safeguard equestrian life for marginalised young people in London indefinitely.

To support, donate or find out more, visit: www.strengthandlearningthroughhorses.org

“We designed an education programme to equip young people with the skills they need to do well in education – time management, teamwork, assertiveness, giving feedback, being leaders - giving them the confidence that they can do the same in a college environment or back in school.”

Today, Ascot Racecourse, are delighted to welcome guests of The British Racing School who join us as we recognise and celebrate their 40th anniversary.

The BRS was established in 1983 to train and create pathways for the next generation of stable staff, trainers and jockeys, to help them harness their potential and achieve their dream jobs in the horse racing industry Over 4,500 students have been supported in the last 40 years on its flagship foundation course alone. It is also home to over 70 ex-racehorses who enjoy a second career in teaching, making it home to more retired racehorses than any other UK site. Horse welfare is a top priority and students are taught how to look after them to a ‘gold standard’ – a level of care which stands them in good stead when they leave and progress to work in a racing yard

Based in Newmarket, the School empowers young people to harness their potential and improve their wellbeing through interacting with horses and ponies; creating pathways through:

The Newmarket Pony Academy: Term-time, after-school and holiday clubs for children aged 8-14 referred by local schools

The Pony Racing Academy: 12-week Academy for 13-15 year olds who want to take part in pony racing who have financial/ other barriers preventing entry.

The Flexible Learning Programme: Alternative learning provision for year 10/11 pupils from local schools to increase educational engagement and gain skills/ qualifications which lead to careers in horse racing.

The Riding a Dream Academy: Support young people from diverse and underprivileged communities to access and participate in horse racing through scholarships and introductory weeks

The Foundation Course: 6-18 week courses for 16-24 year olds who want to start a career in racing.

Ascot Racecourse is a long-term supporter of the charity and in addition to sponsorship assistance, has produced a film to showcase their work, students and staff which will be launched across all channels today.

We have also named our 15.50 race “The British Racing School 40th Anniversary Commonwealth Cup Trial Stakes” to celebrate their achievements.

Racing together are proud to introduce the Racing Together Directory of community engagement and activity. This unique asset sits within the Racing Together website and consists of over 360 organisations and activities nationwide. It maps the work going on to harness racing’s assets to help people of all ages and backgrounds to develop skills, increase physical activity and to make racing a more diverse and inclusive sport.

In 2020, a partnership of Racing Together, Godolphin and the Racing Foundation conducted an industry survey with the aim of understanding horse racing’s

commitment to its communities, as a way of showcasing racing’s positive impact. Over 100 organisations responded, and the Directory was born, offering open access to all partners to provide updates on their work and events, plus details of their beneficiary groups.

Forming part of a wider collaborative effort by the British racing industry to increase activity and beneficiaries, the Directory is searchable across programme type and region.

Everybody at Ascot was deeply saddened last year to hear of the death of Svend Kold at the age of 69 He was an integral part of the Ascot veterinary team for more than 30 years before retiring in 2021.

Having arrived in Newmarket after qualifying in Denmark, Svend spent several years at the Animal Health Trust before moving to an equine practice in the Cotswolds. He dedicated his entire life to the welfare of animals, in particular horses.

Svend joined the veterinary team at Ascot in 1985 and became the senior veterinary surgeon in 2000, amassing approximately 800 racedays at Ascot. He was also a highly sought-after expert witness for veterinary legal work and made regular trips back to Denmark through his involvement in the Danish Equine Veterinary Association.

Today we have named our final race in memory of Svend – the Svend Kold Memorial Handicap Stakes which is very kindly sponsored by Howden. We are delighted to have Svend’s family and friends with us today to celebrate his lifetime contribution to racing at Ascot.

At all meetings there is a team of specially qualified vets appointed to look after the welfare of all horses. During each race vets follow the horse by car and can attend a casualty in the same response time as the paramedic teams responsible for human casualties. It is standard practise for screens to be fixed around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This does not reflect the severity of an injury, just allows the vet some privacy and the patient a calm environment in which to recover. Please do not always assume the worst if you see screens around a fallen horse.
