THE JOCKEYCLUB
As always, we have already witnessed greatness at this year’s Festival through Constitution Hill, Energumene and the emotional farewell victory of Honeysuckle, so what are we to witness on the final day of this great Festival as we approach the blue riband of Jump Racing –The Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup.
On this day last year, Rachael Blackmore made history by becoming the first ever woman to win the race onboard the Henry De Bromhead-trained A Plus Tard. While the triowill be lookingtoretaintheircrown this year, they’ll first have to get past afield of England and Ireland’s topchasers in order to do so
Among thoseincontention is GalopinDes Champs for Willie Mullins, whilethe top-trainer’s nephew will also be looking to make history with Noble Yeats. The Emmet Mullins-trained seven-year-old was victorious in lastyear’s Aintree GrandNational, and awin in the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup wouldmake him one of onlythreehorses to ever do theGrand National-Gold Cupdouble
We’d like to take this opportunity to thankall of those who are supporting racing today. They includeJCB, McCoy Contractors, Albert Bartlett, Boodles, Paddy Power and St James’s Place.Wewish them all a wonderful dayhere with us
We are honoured to once againbeworkingwith WellChild, our official charity partners for 2023. WellChild do amazing work across the country with seriously ill children, andtheir headquartersare based right here in Cheltenham.
Beforeracing, you can headover to the parade ring for the lastinstalment from our Punters Panel, who will be on hand to offer some expertadvice on the day’s action. In the samelocationat12.55 pm Soprano Laura Wright willbegetting thelastday of The Festival officially underway with aspecialperformance which is nottobemissed.
To celebrate the four days of extraordinary racing we’ve had here at Cheltenham Racecourse, you can headovertoThe Centaur after the last to see Satellite Down, who will be providing the perfect send off to thisyear’s Festival
We’d like to sign-off by thanking each and every one of you for joining us for what is the highlight of our calendar. The impact thatthe event and your attendancehas on the localcommunityisstaggering, with anew report carried out by The University of Gloucestershirerevealing that in 2022, The Festival brought an estimated £274million to the local economy.
For now from us andthe team we wishyou a wonderful day and hope that we will be seeingyou again very soon.
Until nexttime,

THE JCB TRIUMPH HURDLE FA CT SA ND ST AT IS TI CS
The JCB Triumph Hurdle is the Championship race for juveniles (four-year-olds) and is historically one of the most open races at The Festival. Thanks to the introduction of the Fred Winter, it usually means the field is much smaller and more competitve. As is usualina Grade 1Championship race, all horses carry the 11st 2lb, apart from the fillies’, who get a7lb allowance.

The JCB Triumph Hurdle certainly has arich and interesting history. The racewas introduced to the Racing Calendar in 1939, and was originally heldatHurst ParkinSurrey. That race was won by Grey Talk, who was trained by George Batchelor and ridden by Serge Rochet. Although no race took placefrom 1940-1949 duetothe war, in the following years it was regularly contested by horses trained in France with six of the first seven winners French-based.
As the leading event in the National Huntcalendar exclusively contested by juveniles, you would have thought that the two-mile and one-furlong (3,420 metres) contest would be agood source for Champion Hurdle winners, butClair Soleil was the first of justfour to achieve the featwhen winning the 1953 Triumph Hurdle before bagging Champion Hurdle glory in 1955, bothtimesunder FredWinter.
Prince Charlemagne proved anotable Triumph winner in 1954asthe Tommy Carey-trained gelding provided acertain Lester Piggott with one of his twenty hurdle race victories. Fred Winter was back in the winners’ enclosurein1961 when partnering the Ryan Price-trainedCantab to victoryand 12 months on, the legendary trainer saddledBeaver II, his second winner of the race, riddenthistime by Josh Gifford.
When Hurst Park closed its doors, the Triumph Hurdle wastransferred to Cheltenham for the 1965 renewal, althoughatthat pointittook place at the April meetinguntilitbecamepartofThe Festival in 1968.Itwas at this stage that the race attracted its first sponsor –the Daily Express, whose name was associated with the racefrom1965-1996
Arguably, the most impressive Triumph Hurdle winner cameinthe shape of the Brian Swift-trained Persian War who won the race in 1967 under Jimmy Uttley, beforewinning ahat-trickof Champion Hurdle titles in 1968, 1969 and1970.In fact, until2015, Uttley was the joint most successful jockey in the history of the race having also won on England’sGlory in 1968 andBoxer in 1971.
In 1985 acertain Nicky Henderson recorded his first Triumph Hurdle winner when Steve Smith Eccles partnered First Bout to victory. The race has provedkindtoHenderson, whohas wonthe raceafurther sixtimes courtesy of Alone Success (1987), Katarino(1999), Zaynar(2009), Soldatino (2010), Peace And Co (2015) and Pentland Hills (2019), making him the leadingtrainer in therace’s history
Although better known for winning Classics, Sir Michael Stoute got in on the actwhen the Sheikh Mohammed-owedKribensis took the spoils in 1988 beforebecoming the third horse to go on to ChampionHurdle gloryin1990.
The Elite Racing Club took over the sponsorship of the race in 1997 andsaw the TedWalsh-trained Commanche Court gallop to victory under Norman Williamson. The Irish have aremarkable record at The Festival butsincethen they have onlywon six TriumphHurdles –Scolardyin2002, when current sponsor JCB took up the reins, and morerecently OurConor,Tiger Roll, Ivanovich Gorbatov, Farclas, Burning Victory, Quilixios and last year’s winnerVauban
Ivanovich Gorbatov’s success earned Barry Geraghty the honourofbeing the most successful jockeyinthe race’s history. His tally of fiveisunmatched, having alsowon aboard Spectroscope, Zaynar,Soldatino and Peace And Co.
In 2007, the tiny Alan King-trained Katchit became only the fourth horse to win the Triumph Hurdle before following up in the following season’s Champion Hurdle. Twelve months later Paul Nicholls won the first of two Triumph Hurdles thanks to Celestial Halo, Zarkandar adding the secondin2011
In 2020 Goshen unseated at the last in terribly unluckyfashion when ten lengthsclear. Burning Victorycaptalisedtogive Willie Mullins hisfirst win since2002 but in 2021itwas theturn of Quilixious to steam up the hill in amuchless dramatic fashion
Last year Willie Mullins found himself with a second winner in three years with the hot favouriteVauban. Thisyearhecould wellfind himself in the winners’ enclosureagain, withthree of hisdominatingthe first few in the betting. This includesLossiemouth, who wears thesamesilks as 2022winnerVauban.

PLAYSMARTER
LOSSIEMOUTH looks one of the best seen in this division for several years and would be unbeaten had she got better luck behind Gala Marceau at Leopardstown. She can improve further and makeit 2-1 against her stablemate who is also capable of better and won’t go down easily now fitted ahood Blood Destiny needs to cut out the mistakes but is another veryexciting juvenile and can makeit another 1-2-3 this week for Willie Mullins

The McCoy Contractors CountyHurdle, atwo miles andone furlong handicap hurdle for five-year-olds and upwards, is one of the most fiercely contested races of the entire Festival. The aim of ahandicap is to ensure alevel playing field for all and this is achieved by allocating different weights to each of the runners based on what they have achievedonthe racecourse so far -see how the 155-ratedSharjah carries 1lb more than the 154-rated Pied Piper.

RACE DESCRIPTION
The Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle is run overthe stamina-sapping trip of three miles and this contest attracts the top staying hurdlersofthe future. Horses are classed as anovice if they have yet to win arace prior to the official start of the season, usually towards the end of April. In theory, this allows the inexperienced horses to race against each other before graduating to the senior ranks. In this Grade 1race, all runners will carry 11st 7lb.

It wasn’t until 12 March 1924 when the race was run as we know it now, although in thosedays it took place on what is now the Old Course and was overshadowed by the National Hunt Chase. That first renewal was won by the five-year-old Red Splash, who earned connections £685!
The race was first abandoneddue to frost in 1931 and in 1937 due to flooding, but the five intervening yearssaw the most prolific horsein the race’s history–GoldenMiller.Hewon five consecutive Gold Cups between 1932 and 1936 andalso managed aGrand National for good measure in 1934.
The Vincent O’Brien-trained CottageRake became the first multiple winner in the post-war era winning all three renewals from 1948-50. Such washis success thathehelped to popularise the Gold Cup, and TheFestival itself, with theIrishpublic.
During the 1960s the legendary Arkle cemented hisnameinracing’s Hall of Fame by winning all threerenewalsfrom 1964-66 Suchwas Arkle’s superiority prior to his final victory that he was sent off the 1-10 favourite andthe Tom Dreaper-trained icon remainsthe shortest-priced winner in the race’s history.
Perhapsthe most remarkable feat by atrainer camein1983when Michael Dickinson saddled the first five finishers. Bregawn, ridden by Graham Bradleycame out on topbut canyou name the otherfour? Captain John, Wayward Lad,Silver Buckand AshleyHouse, in caseyou wereleftscratchingyourhead.
DawnRun created anotherpiece of history in 1986 when Paddy Mullins’ mare became the first, andonly, horse to date to win both the Gold Cup and the Champion Hurdle.
Anew era of domination began in 2002 when Best Mate, trained by HenriettaKnight, won the first of threeconsecutive Gold Cups.
His finalvictoryin2004 confirmed himasonly the fourth horse to have won the race three or more times.
The Paul Nicholls-trained Kauto Star outclassed hisrivals in 2007but twelvemonths later he hadnoanswer to his strong-travelling stablemate Denman. In 2009,the pair locked horns againbut withDenman only just recoveredfrom aheartcondition, KautoStar gainedrevengeand becamethe first horse to regain theGoldCup
In 2013,Bob’sWorth gaveNicky Henderson his second Gold Cupwinner in threeyears following the success of LongRun in 2011. The 2014 renewalsaw Lord Windermere prevail in a dramatic renewal and 2015 had itsfair share of drama as Coneygreebecame the first novice since Captain Christy in 1974 to lift the Gold Cup.
Four of the last seven renewals have seen trainers win the racefor the first time with Don Cossack, Sizing John, NativeRiver, Al Boum Photo,Minella Indo and APlus Tard landing the spoils fortheirrespective trainers. Al Boum Photo not onlyended Willie Mullins drought in the Gold Cup butthen went onto win it again in 2020. The same happened in 2021 when Henry de Bromheadwon the race for the first time with Minella Indo. The duo returned last yeartotry and reclaim thecrownbut it instead went to the 2021 runner-up APlus Tard, who delivered aspinetingling performance.
This year we aretreated to both 2021 and 2022 winners returning to try and once more claim theprize. They aregoing up against King George winner Bravemansgame and 2022 NationalHunt Chase winner Stattler. Also in the mixisthe Willie Mullins hotpot,Galopin Des Champs, willhegive Mullins athird winin the last fiveyears?

PLAYSMARTER
GALOPIN DES CHAMPS would be unbeaten over fences but for falling at last year’s Festival. Theway he forged clear in the Irish Gold Cup suggests the slightly longer trip this afternoon should be within range and he’s verymuch the one to beat.Bravemansgame is another who has suffered only one defeatover fences and is feared most after his impressive King George success.Last year’s National Hunt Chase winner Stattler will relish the return to alonger trip and looks best of the rest.
