CHAIR’S WELCOME
WELCOME TO DAY ONE OF THE 2024 BOODLES MAY FESTIVAL - TRIALS DAY
Welcome to Chester Racecourse for our much-anticipated first fixture of 2024, and the opening day of our prestigious Boodles May Festival.
A record prize fund of more than £1.3m will be on offer across the next three days, as we stage plenty of exhilarating and unmissable racing action here on the Roodee.
As ever, our thanks go to our long-standing title sponsor of the May Festival, Boodles, who have now been proudly associated with our three-day meeting for 11 years. They continue to be fantastic supporters of both racing at Chester and our sport in general. I would also like to extend my thanks to our other sponsors associated with today’s card of racing - CAA Stellar, the TOTE, Weatherbys, ESL Export and CNG Switch. We are very grateful for your support. We have seven thrilling races on the card for Trials Day, including two of our three Classic Trials run during the Boodles May Festival, the Weatherbys ePassport Cheshire Oaks at 3.05pm and the Boodles Chester Vase Stakes at 3.40pm.
The full race card gets underway from 1.30pm, when runners and riders take to the track for the CAA Stellar Handicap Stakes and closes with the CNG Switch Handicap Stakes at 4.45pm.
Away from today’s racing action, the excitement is building for the 200-year anniversary running of the Chester Cup on Friday Make sure you join us around the Parade Ring today to watch the live drawing of stalls for the big race, as well as an opening day parade. The latter gets things underway from 11.30am. The Chester Cup will also be on display for on-course photo opportunities in the Paddock area between 12pm and 2pm.
I hope you all enjoy a wonderful day with us here at Chester Racecourse today and take up the opportunity to join us again for some more racing action tomorrow Day two of the Boodles May Festival is Ladies Day, which also features our popular Best Dressed competition, in association with Cheshire Oaks Designer Outlet.

HOW TO PLACE A BET WITH A RACECOURSE BOOKMAKER WAYS TO BET
WIN ONLY The most common form of bet. You win if your horse is first past the post.
Example: £5 win at 8/1 would return £45 (8 x £5 = £40 + £5 stake)
EACH WAY Backing a horse to win or be placed. This doubles your bet – for example: £5 each way = £5 to win and £5 for a place = £10 total stake.
STANDARD EACH WAY TERMS
In conjunction with The RCA, the bookmakers have introduced standard each-way terms. Bookmakers will provide these terms, or better, when offering each-way betting.
• Fewer than 3 runners - all on to win
• 3 or 4 runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2
• 5 – 7 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2
• 8 or more runners – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 12 to 15 runners (inclusive) – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3
• Handicaps with 16 to 21 runners (inclusive) – 1/5 odds a place 1,2,3,4
• Handicaps with 22 or more runners – 1/4 odds a place 1,2,3,4
Some bookmakers also offer ‘betting without the favourite’, where you can back your selection at reduced odds to either win or finish second to the horse nominated by the bookmaker as favourite. You may bet with confidence with any bookmaker on course as they operate with Administration Of Gambling On Tracks Ltd. (AGT) approval.
In the unlikely event of a dispute with a bookmaker, please call upon the assistance of the AGT Betting Ring Manager, who can be found on the ground floor of the Grandstand Enclosure.
The AGT also offers a ‘late pay’ service in case the bookmaker leaves the course before you have collected your winnings.
Late pay claims should be sent to: AGT, 3A Kings Hall, Parsons Green, St Ives, Cambridgeshire, PE27 4WY
PLACING A BET
Experiencing the buzz of the betting ring may be a little daunting at first, but you will soon find it is very easy to place a bet. Here are some guidelines for racegoers to follow:
1. Each bookmaker will be offering slightly different prices, so shop around for the best odds against your selection.
2. Call your bet clearly to the bookmaker by stating the name and / or number of your chosen horse and the stake.
3. Listen to the bookmaker repeat your bet to his / her clerk and correct him immediately if any details are called wrongly
4. Make sure you obtain a ticket from the bookmaker and keep it safe.
5. If your selection wins, hand the ticket back to the bookmaker for settlement. Never destroy or dispose of your ticket until after the “Weighed in” announcement has been made. Betting with the bookmaker is tax-free. Deductions are made only if a horse is withdrawn after the betting market has been formed.
Please check the minimum stake accepted by each bookmaker on his display board. Some bookmakers do not take sums under £5, especially in the main betting ring, but there will be others who are happy to accept £2 bets. Please tender the correct change when possible.

TODAY’S TOP TIPS
A chance is taken on the dropped-in-class BILLY WEBSTER in what looks a fiercely competitive opener. Although unable to complete the hat-trick last time, there was much to like about his fifth-placed effort following a tardy start and he can go close with normal luck this afternoon. The unbeaten Garfield Shadow warrants respect despite his unfavourable outside draw, while Auric and Al Shabab Storm are others to keep an eye on.
WIN: BILLY WEBSTER
DANGER: GARFIELD SHADOW
NIGHT IN PARIS did all but win on her racecourse debut at Ripon, showing plenty of early speed before inexperience saw her edge away from the rail late on, and normal improvement could make her difficult to beat. Seraphim Angel probably ran to a similar level when fourth on her debut at Newmarket and she must enter calculations, while first-time-out winners Kodibeat, Daisy Inthe Breeze and Lady Lightning add further spice to the race.
WIN: NIGHT IN PARISDANGER: SERAPHIM ANGEL
KINGS MERCHANT could make the most of stall one to follow up his cosy Wolverhampton success. The form of that last-start win looks fairly solid with the runner-up twice successful since and the booking of Oisin Murphy catches the eye Ziggy’s Missile needs to overcome his outside draw but still merits consideration having won three of his last four appearances, while Blue Storm and Vince L’Amour are other names to note
WIN: KINGS MERCHANT
DANGER: ZIGGY’S MISSILE
The key to this race could be the recent clash at Leopardstown between GALILEO DAME (first) and Rubies Are Red (second), and the former is taken to come out on top again. Joseph O’Brien’s charge was a comfortable winner on that occasion and stepping up in trip should eke out further improvement. Forest Fairy made quite the impression when scoring over 1m4f on debut at Wolverhampton in February, and she is a key player too.
WIN: GALILEO DAME
DANGER: FOREST FAIRY
The Aidan O’Brien/Ryan Moore combination has dominated this contest in recent years and they look to have another ideal candidate in the shape of GROSVENOR SQUARE. A half-brother to Irish Derby winner Santiago, the son of Galileo ended last season with a dominant display at Leopardstown in October and stepping up in trip should suit. A well-bred sort by Frankel, Cadogan Place narrowly got the better of the reopposing Hidden Law (second) on debut at Southwell, and they are noted too.
WIN: GROSVENOR SQUARE
DANGER: CADOGAN PLACE
LIAM SWAGGER took a big step forward when a neck second at Windsor nine days ago and the son of Iffraaj could be hard to beat if finding any further progression. Castle In The Sand is an obvious threat to the selection having filled the runner-up position on his last four starts, but he could be vulnerable once again. Gallantly is a noteworthy Irish raider, while Chortal merits a market inspection on his racecourse bow.
WIN: LIAM SWAGGER
DANGER: CASTLE IN THE SAND
ON A SESSION showed plenty of promise when filling third place in a similar event at Musselburgh a couple of weeks ago and it would be no surprise to see him go well off the same mark from the rail draw Legal Reform has to be of some interest following his success at Lingfield last time, while Sandy Paradise and Princess Shabnam also merit places on the shortlist.
WIN: ON A SESSION
DANGER: LEGAL REFORM

LAST YEAR’S WINNERS
The first day of the 2023 Boodles May Festival, City Day, included the Weatherbys Digital Solutions Cheshire Oaks and the Chester Vase, sponsored by Boodles. The two feature contests allow contenders for next month’s Oaks and Derby to gain valuable experience before heading to Epsom.
There was one clear favourite in the betting for the Listed Weatherbys Digital Solutions Cheshire Oaks last year and that was Savethelastdance. Going off at a short 8/11, the classy three-year-old filly came into this contest off the back of an impressive first win in Maiden company at Leopardstown the following month.
On just her second start of the season, this was a dominant performance for the Aidan O’Brien trained filly under a great ride from Ryan Moore. This victory brought Aidan O’Brien his eighth success in this race, surpassing the record set by Barry Hills and confirming him as the most successful trainer in this contest. Finishing a
monumental 22 lengths ahead of her rivals here, Savethelastdance could not be caught, despite some solid rides from rivals There’s The Door and a surprisingly strong third from the unfancied Ermesinde.
Aidan O’Brien’s dominance in the Group 3 Boodles Chester Vase was put on hold in 2023 as the County Tipperary based trainer was unable to get the win this time, despite winning eight of the nine prior runnings of this race. It was the Gosden-trained Arrest who picked up the win last year and he did so in fine style. The colt had shown plenty of quality in his debut season, most notably when second to Dubai Mile in the Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud and he was well-backed in the market. Ridden here by the legendary Frankie Dettori, he looked hugely impressive riding out a comfortable winner. O’Brien and regular partner in crime Ryan Moore had Adelaide River in this one who was just unable to overcome an awkward start and could only manage second.
The Lily Agnes Conditions Stakes continued to be the traditional curtainraiser of the Boodles May Festival and last year’s renewal saw the Richard Hannon trained Ziggy’s Phoenix
start the day off with a bang, the two-year-old showing plenty of fight to keep on well under heavy pressure in the final furlong. This was the first victory of what would prove a fine day for Ryan Moore.
The tote £100K Guaranteed Placepot Every Day Handicap saw the relatively unfancied Danger Alert bounce back from his below par effort at Newcastle to pick up a hard fought win here for trainer George Boughey. Fellow four-year-old Radio Goo Goo picked up an impressive win in the Camden Pale Handicap, the first of what would be a very strong hattrick throughout the season (including another win here later in the month).
The William Haggas-trained Amleto broke his maiden tag at the third time of asking in the day’s penultimate race, the Deepbridge Syndicate Maiden Stakes. Tom Marquand keeping his mount in second before kicking on to take the lead inside the final two furlongs. The three-year-old never looking troubled. The day’s finale was the Everyone’s Turf Handicap which saw Hodler get his first win of the season for Jim Boyle after a modest start. The gelding raced well to hold off the fast-finishing Gorak in second.

The National Gallery Collection
The National Gallery is our nation’s treasure box: home to one of the world’s greatest collections of art. In honour of its 200th anniversary and being their official partner, Boodles designers have taken inspiration from paintings in the gallery to create ‘The National Gallery Collection’ The suites within the collection take inspiration from artistic techniques: Play of Light, Brushstrokes, Perspective, and the theme of Motherhood within the gallery.
Play of Light
Gallen-Kallela’s depiction of Lake Keitele inspired the Play of Light ‘Lake Keitele’ pieces, with Boodles designers mimicking the water’s zigzag pattern using marquise cut diamonds. Monet’s ‘Water-Lillies, Setting Sun’ influenced a lively palette of pink tourmaline and peridot in the second set. Seurat’s ‘The Morning Walk’ and Renoir’s ‘Moulin Huet Bay’ guided pieces in the corresponding suite, particularly its bright sea blues and lemony sparkles.
Brushstrokes
Paul Cézanne’s ‘Avenue at Chantilly’, ‘Hillside in Provence’ and ‘Bathers’ all inform our new ‘Brush Strokes’ suite. Cézanne’s loose, open use of oil paint – developed from his work with watercolours – suggests dashing,
dynamic motion. Boodles designers sought to bring to life the ‘swoosh’ of his brush in the suite. The ‘Brush Strokes’ ring is one of the stars of the show: at its heart, an 18.64 carat aquamarine.
Perspective
Canaletto’s ‘Piazza San Marco’ and ‘Entrance to the Cannaregio’ inspired our ‘Perspective’ bangle. In the former work, there’s a sense we’re right there – in among the action of the colonnade, glancing through an archway into 1758 The arches that line Saint Mark’s Square and shape thousands of windows throughout the city’s palaces are key motifs in these pieces. In the ring and bangle, you can look through an arch to see one further away The mystery of Venice, a city of masks, creates intrigue amid the white diamonds. The bangle features Ashoka cut stones: a unique cut featuring 62 facets, only available to buy from Boodles in Europe.
Motherhood
Rather than an artistic technique, but a re-occurring theme; ‘Motherhood’
in all of its forms is a unifying subject in the Gallery. From the tender portrayals seen in Sassoferrato’s painting to the depictions of the Virgin Mary and Christ child, the essence of motherhood, characterised by loving care, echoes timelessly through the centuries. The embrace, of figures’ heads leaning lovingly and arms curved in gentle embrace, serves as the inspiration for our Motherhood suite.
To create this collection, Boodles designers gained special access to the Gallery, discussing the piece in depth with expert curators to distil the detail of some of the Gallery’s finest treasures into unique and wearable works of art. Meaning you can now carry a Canaletto wherever you go, and enjoy Raphael in the form of a ring.

RACE DESCRIPTON
This is a six furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 71 to 90. In a handicap the weight that each of the runners carries is determined by their official handicap rating which is based on their level of form shown so far. The aim is to ensure competitive racing by asking the higher rated horses to carry more weight than a lower rated rival. As a guide, horses rated 40 tend to be at the lower end of the scale whilst the very best performers would be rated as high as 130.

LILY AGNES STAKES HISTORY
To music aficionados, Lily Agnes is a twenty-something singer-songwriter from London with a Spotify profile. To students of the turf, however, Lily Agnes is a filly and broodmare of significant repute. One whose legacy still remains relevant today, more than 150 years on from her birth.
Foaled in 1871 and a daughter of 2000 Guineas and Derby winner Macaroni, Lily Agnes won all six of her races as a two-year-old. Later, she went on to secure notable victories in the Northumberland Plate, Doncaster Cup (both in 1874) and The Ebor (1875) –all of which remain prestigious races today – and ended her racing career, aged five, having won 19 races at distances from five furlongs to three miles.
Lily Agnes arguably left an even greater imprint on the sport in the late-1800s as a mother of future champions. Her daughter Farewell won the 1000 Guineas in 1885, while Ossory won both the St James’ Palace Stakes and the Prince of Wales’s Stakes at Royal Ascot in 1888. Her most illustrious offspring, however, was Ormonde.
He won all 16 races he ran in during his career – including completing the Triple Crown 1886, with victories in the 2000 Guineas, Derby and St Leger – and was widely regarded as the ‘horse of the century’. His remarkable achievements are recognised here at Chester with the annual staging of Group 3 Ormonde Stakes, which takes place tomorrow.
Lily Agnes died in 1899, aged 28. Said to have developed into a ‘roarer’ during her racing days, it’s thought she passed on this wind affliction to many of her offspring, including Ormonde, who developed issues with his breathing before his four-year-old season. Only then was the Shergar story beginning. Following a modest first inauguration in 1950.
The Lily Agnes Stakes is a five-furlong sprint for two-year-old colts and fillies. It is typically won by a sharp, nimble and compact horse, often with previous race experience, and one adept at scooting around the tight turns that make Chester unique in British Flat racing.
Its most notable graduate is Risky, the winner in 1993 for trainer Richard Hannon Snr and jockey Pat Eddery. After her success here, Risky stormed to a five-length victory in the Group 3 Queen Mary Stakes at Royal Ascot two runs later under Walter Swinburn. She also won the valuable Super Sprint at Newbury and the Group 2 Molecomb Stakes at Glorious Goodwood, again with Swinburn in the saddle, and ended her two-year-old season with an impressive five wins and four second places from nine starts.
Romantic Myth followed in Risky’s illustrious hoofprints in 2000 by also using her win in this race as a springboard to success in the Queen Mary Stakes, while Lucky Parkes, the heroine in 1992, was retired from racing just over four years later with a remarkable record of 17 individual victories. Like Lily Agnes, she enjoyed a successful second career as a broodmare. Her most talented progeny was Doctor Parkes, who went on to win 15 races in his own right.
Last year’s race saw a Middleham Park Racing one-two as Ziggy’s Phoenix showed plenty of heart, keeping on well under heavy pressure from the Alice Haynes-trained Ziggy’s Dream in second.

ZIGGY’S PHOENIX
Ziggy’s Phoenix had looked a classy twoyear-old coming into this contest. Her lack of experience showed on debut at Kempton in April when fourth of eight, running green. She came on well for that appearance though as just over a week later she rode out a comfortable winner in novice company at Ripon. Coming into this contest she was well supported and with Ryan Moore in the saddle she took home the win, ahead of Ziggy’s Dream in second, never really looking troubled.

RACE DESCRIPTON
This is a five furlong handicap race for three-year-olds which have been rated from 69 to 88. To qualify for a handicap rating horses must have run at least three times in a Flat race in Britain, or have run in no more than two Flat races run in Britain and won at least one of them. This rating then dictates the weight to be carried in a handicap. In simple terms a horse rated 85 in this particular race would be required to carry 5lb more than a rival rated 80.

WEDNESDAY May 17, 2017 was the day Apple became the first company to see its value exceed $800billion. At the same time, another global phenomenon was setting foot on the road to fame and fortune, more than 5,000 miles away from Apple’s California HQ, here at Chester.
Not that anyone in attendance knew quite what a behemoth of the turf they were seeing when Enable stormed to victory under Frankie Dettori in the familiar green, pink and white silks of her pioneering owner-breeder Prince Khalid Abdullah.
Heck, after being beaten into third place on her seasonal return at Newbury three weeks earlier, Enable wasn’t even sent off favourite to win the 2017 Cheshire Oaks! That honour went to the Ballydoyle raider Alluringly, who emerged as Enable’s shadow from the final bend. Although she got to within one-and-three-quarter lengths of an eased-down Enable at
CHESHIRE OAKS HISTORY
the finish line, it would be as close as Alluringly ever got to Enable in three further jousts. Not that there was any shame in coming off second-best to the most talented filly of her generation. That victory here – in what was the only occasion Enable graced the Roodee – was the springboard to a stunning winning spree, which saw her rack up big-race victory after big-race victory during an unbeaten run of a dozen races over 27 months.
They included a five-length rout of Rhododendron in the Epsom Oaks on her next start, three King Georges, two Arcs, two Yorkshire Oaks, the Irish Oaks, the Coral-Eclipse and a Breeders’ Cup Turf at Churchill Downs in Kentucky.
When she was eventually retired in the autumn of 2020, following her second unsuccessful attempt to win what would have been a record-setting third Arc, she did so having won 15 of her 19 races, 11 of them Group 1s, and amassing almost £11million in prize money.
If Enable remains the star pupil to graduate from the Cheshire Oaks, a raft of others have endorsed this Listed race’s status as a leading trial for Classic-class fillies since its inauguration in 1950.
Shoot A Line used her victory in 1980, for Willie Carson and Major Dick Hern, as a stepping stone to a sensational summer of success, which also included wins in the 1980 Ribblesdale Stakes at Royal Ascot, the Irish Oaks, Yorkshire Oaks and Park Hill Stakes.
The Ribblesdale and Irish Oaks were also races which another Prince Khalid filly, Bolas, went on to win in 1994 following her victory here. The 2007 victor Light Shift also added Classic success to her CV by landing the Epsom Oaks on her very next start.
Light Shift was one of three Cheshire Oaks winners for the late, great Sir Henry Cecil, who was widely regarded among his peers for being the finest trainer of fillies. Yet even Cecil couldn’t get close to the seven victories achieved by Barry Hills, who, despite handing over the reins to his son Charlie in 2011, was the winning-most trainer in the history of the Cheshire Oaks. His record has now been bested however. As Savethelastdance’s victory last year allowed Aidan O’Brien to record his eighth victory of this prestigious contest.

HISTORICAL BACKGROUND
The Cheshire Oaks has formed part of the May Festival for many years and alongside the two Derby trials, has played a role in providing a similar Oaks-trial opportunity for 3-y-o fillies. Originally run at the same distance as the Chester Vase (the full 1m 4f 63yds), the race distance was reduced by half a furlong in 1987.

The Weatherbys ePassport Cheshire Oaks is the first of two Classic trials on the opening day of the meeting and Aidan O’Brien saddles two fillies in a bid to land the race for a ninth time since 2008 and a third successive season.
O’Brien was successful with Savethelastdance last year before she finished runner-up in the Oaks, whilst twice this century has the Cheshire Oaks winner gone on to Group 1 success at Epsom, that pair being Light Shift (2007) and the brilliant Enable, who won this contest seven years ago.
This year, O’Brien saddles Port Fairy, a neck winner at Dundalk last month and the maiden Rubies Are Red The latter is a full-sister to Found, who was a Group 1 winner at two, three and four, successful in the 2016 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. Third on debut at Galway in late-October, she travelled well when runner-up at Leopardstown last month when she was beaten 3½ lengths by Galileo
Dame, who holds both fillies on form, having finished in front of Port Fairy when runner-up at Gowran Park last autumn.
Rubies Are Red can be expected to strip fitter for her reappearance and it wouldn’t be a huge shock to see the daughter of Galileo take a big step forward, although Galileo Dame –who represents Aidan’s son Joseph – sets the standard (at this stage) in terms of the Irish-trained runners. She has raced exclusively on heavy ground to date, but shapes as though she will relish the step up in trip and she should have little in trouble in coping with better ground. In fact, she could improve for it, as could Rubies Are Red and they could be the pair to focus on.

CHESHIRE OAKS PREVIEW
The most-experienced fillies in the field are Ambiente Amigo and Flying Finn, who both step up from handicap company. The latter has won mile contests on heavy at Ripon and soft at Doncaster and arrives here on a hat-trick, but this represents a huge step up in class as well as in distance.
Ralph Beckett, who boasts a fine record with top-level fillies (won the Oaks with Look Here in 2008 and with Talent some 11 years ago), is another who runs two. A winner at Ascot last September, Seaward makes her season reappearance, whilst Forest Fairy looked promising when winning at Wolverhampton in mid-February, on what was her racecourse debut. Whilst that form would leave her with plenty to find, the runner-up has at least won since.
And, the final pair are another duo of maidens, with Beeley finishing
runner-up on both starts to date and Lasting Love having twice finished third. Being from the family of Ask, the former is bred to relish middle-distances and represents the Gosden stable, who won this race with the aforementioned Enable in 2017 and more recently, with Mehdaayih in 2019. Lasting Love was an eye-catcher at Doncaster on her sole start at two and probably raced too freely on her return at Newbury, where she again moved nicely. She will need relax going up in distance, but clearly possesses a good level of ability, despite her having yet to win a race.

The 2023 reneweal of the Weatherbys Digital Solutions
Cheshire Oaks saw Savethelastdance make it a record breaking eighth success in the race for Aidan O’Brien.
Savethelastdance had raced just twice coming into this contest. The first, her only start as a two-year-old coming in fifth of eight in a Maiden at Thurles, starting slowly and proving no match for her more experienced rivals. She was much improved however for that experience and swiftly picked up her first win at the second time of asking. Relatively unfancied at 20/1, she was a comfortable winner of a Leopardstown Maiden in April 2023, besting stablemate Boogie Woogie who was the pick of Ryan Moore in that race. It was an impressive performance, and a real sign of things to come from the young filly and she came into the Cheshire Oaks as the clear favourite and with plenty of eyes on her as Aidan O’Brien set his sights on the Oaks at Epsom in June.
Aidan O’Brien has always done well in this race with this win marking his fifth success in the last ten renewals of this race so it was no surprise to see him score another winner here.
Ryan Moore was in the saddle of Savethelastdance this time, the beginnings of what is looking to be a fine partnership. Going off at 8/11 it was clear that the filly was going to be a big player but there were a number of horses who could trouble her with plenty of top jockeys on show. There’s The Door came into this after a dominant win at Doncaster the prior month and Rossa Ryan had the reigns aboard the David Evans-trained filly. Oisin Murphy was aboard impressive maiden winner Ashtanga, while David Egan had
the ride on Andrew Balding’s Sisyphus Strength who had shown promise in Listed company at Newmarket as a two-year-old. Sirona was a bit of a dark horse, the Charlie Johnston-trained filly having won in Listed Company at Cologne the season prior and William Buick was booked aboard her for the first time.
From her draw in stall five, Savethelastdance started slowly, stuck in the rear before beginning to make headway on the outside from around 3f out. She soon took the lead and once she went clear there was absolutely no catching her as she stormed down the straight to win by an absolutely massive 22 lengths and leaving her rivals no chance at all. A very impressive win from the filly.
There’s The Door did well to take home second. The filly had looked uneasy coming into the contest, unseating Rossa Ryan on the way to the start before rearing
at the start causing her to be slow out of the stalls. She battled back into the contest well, taking second in the final furlong, no match for the winner. Ermesinde was a surprise in third. The Kevin Philippart de Foy trained filly wasn’t fancied much here, going off at 25/1 but managed to take a solid third.
A daughter of Galileo, Savethelastdance has continued to impress since this contest. The filly followed this success by trying her hand at the Oaks where she was second behind Musidora Stakes winner Soul Sister. Then in July she made the trip to the Curragh and secured her first Group 1 victory when scoring in the Irish Oaks before ending the season with a third in the Yorkshire Oaks.
FACTS & STATS
Hot on the heels of her excellent showing when winning a Leopardstown Maiden race a month prior, Savethelastdance came into this race with plenty of expectation, and she more than delivered. Ridden here by Ryan Moore, the Aidan O’Brien-trained filly produced the performance of the Festival as she left her rivals in the dust to win by 22 lengths. No one could come close to her Despite a bit of a slow start, she quickly recovered, and she certainly justified her heavy favouritism.

ONE legendary horse and one legendary trainer will forever be synonymous with the Boodles Chester Vase. Yet they share no connection, other than one was just about old enough to watch and appreciate the other’s extraordinary talents, and the dramatic twist in the tale which followed.
Aidan O’Brien hadn’t even enrolled for secondary school in his native Co Wexford when Shergar and romped away with the Chester Vase in 1981. He had already won one Derby trial, the Guardian Newspaper Classic Trial at Sandown less than a fortnight earlier, by 10 lengths when he arrived on the Roodee just a week-and-a-half later as a red-hot 4-11 favourite for the Vase.
After another wide-margin win, this time by 12 lengths, Shergar was being proclaimed as the reincarnation of Pegasus, and was duly sent off as the odds-on favourite for the 1981 Derby at Epsom. Ridden by 19-year-old Walter Swinburn, who had replaced
CHESTER VASE HISTORY
Lester Piggott as the horse’s regular jockey earlier that season, Shergar breezed his way into the record books with a 10-length triumph that remains the largest-winning margin by a Derby winner to this day. To put some context on Shergar’s performance, the horse he beat into a distant second, Glint Of Gold, went on to win a string of top races in four different countries, including six Group 1s!
Shergar subsequently won both the Irish Derby, with Piggott deputising for a suspended Swinburn, and the King George. But after a hugely disappointing display in the St Leger at Doncaster, where finished only fourth, he was ruled out of taking on Europe’s finest in the Prix de l’Arc De Triomphe at Longchamp in Paris, and instead retired to stand as a stallion at his owner-breeder HH Aga Khan’s private stud near the Curragh in Co Kildare.
Only then was the Shergar story beginning. Following a modest first season as a sire, Shergar was stolen from Ballymany Stud by an armed
gang on the night of February 8, 1983, in what transpired into one of the most high-profile unsolved mysteries of the 20th Century.
The thieves demanded a ransom of £2million, which was not paid. It was believed Shergar, who was valued at £10m, was taken by a reportedly cash-strapped IRA desperately seeking new funds. But no arrests were ever made and Shergar’s remains have never been found. O’Brien would have been only 13 at the time of Shergar’s disappearance. Yet almost a quarter of a century later, the master of Ballydoyle began laying the foundations for a remarkable era of domination of this prestigious Group 3 prize.
His first strike with Soldier Of Fortune in 2007 coincided with the Vase’s 100th anniversary. A record nine further victories have followed, most notably in 2011 with Treasure Beach, who emulated Soldier Of Fortune by winning the Irish Derby, and in 2013 with Ruler Of The World, who conquered Epsom’s Derby the following month. His most recent success being with Changingoftheguard in 2022.

CHESTER VASE
FAMOUS WINNERS
As we celebrate another year of the Boodles May Festival, we look back at some of the most memorable winners of the Chester Vase who were successful on the Roodee before going on to Derby glory at Epsom.
In the early years of the Vase, the great Hyperion was successful on the Roodee in 1933.
Bred by Lord Derby, he was small in size but enjoyed a strong juvenile campaign as he broke the course record at Ascot in the New Stakes before landing the Dewhurst. The colt had not grown much before his three-year-old season, which he began here at Chester with a two lengths victory in the Vase. That performance saw him start as favourite for the Derby and he landed the Classic in fine style, lowering the track record in the process. Hyperion would then go on to win the Prince of Wales’s at Royal Ascot and he became a dual Classic winner with success in the St Leger.
1980 and 1981 saw back-to-back winners of the Vase follow up in the Derby, with the American-bred Henbit gaining Classic glory at Epsom at the start of the decade. Trained by Dick Hern, he won the Classic Trial at Sandown before arriving at Chester in May. It was a strong renewal of the Vase and he comfortably made all under Willie Carson, with the subsequent Leger winner Light Cavalry back in third. In his subsequent run at Epsom, Henbit provided the trainer and jockey combination with consecutive wins in the Derby after Troy had won a year earlier.
The following year we saw a spectacular performance in the Vase by one of the most famous horses in modern history.
The legendary Shergar had won the same Sandown race as Henbit by ten lengths to start off his three-year-old campaign and then was brought to Chester by trainer Michael Stoute. The colt delivered another emphatic victory as he won on the Roodee by twelve lengths, which saw him sent off as the odds-on favourite for the Derby.
Ridden by nineteen-year-old Walter Swinburn who was having his first experience of the Classic, he made his move around Tattenham Corner before pulling effortlessly clear of his rivals to record a ten lengths success eased down. The winning margin remains a record for the race and Shergar would go on to further Derby success in the Irish equivalent before getting the better of his elders in the King George at Ascot.
In more recent times, leading Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien has built up an excellent record in the Chester Vase as he targets his lightly-raced Derby candidates at
the race to prepare them for Epsom. In 2013, Ruler Of The World had not run as a two-year-old and only made his debut a month prior to the May Festival. He won the Vase by an impressive six lengths and the experience of the Roodee track helped the son of Galileo progress to become a Derby winner on just his third career start. His latest success in this prestigious Group 3 came last year when Changingoftheguard comfortably sweeped aside the opposition, winning by six and a half lengths before going on to win the King Edward VII Stakes at Ascot that June. Arrest won this contest last year, and while he was unsuccessful in the Derby, he scored in the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer at Newbury that August before stepping back into Group 1 company when going off favourite in the St Leger, behind just the impressive Continuous.
FACTS & STATS
VASE STAKES
Excitement was high coming into this contest as Arrest was due to make his first start for 200 days The Gosden-trained colt had an excellent debut season, taking in victories at Sandown and Ffos Las before running in a superb second, just a head behind Dubai Mile in the Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud. He raced a touch wide early, but Dettori soon got him back on track and he began to rapidly move up the field. He moved clear around two furlongs out and was eased across the line with old rival Adelaide River a distant second
KEY TRENDS
LAST YEAR’S CHESTER VASE
Like many of the major races at this meeting, Aidan O’Brien has an amazing record in this contest, with eight wins out of the last ten. Unfortunately for the County Tipperary trainer, it was not to be this year.
After their success in 2022 with Changinoftheguard, all eyes were once again on O’Brien and Moore as we approached this race. Entering Adelaide River this time around, the colt had shown plenty of promise in his debut season. His most notable performance coming in October 2022 when a strong third in the Group 1 Criterium de Saint-Cloud. His main rival coming into this was a familiar one, Arrest. The Gosden-trained son of Frankel had locked horns with Adelaide River before and had come out on top. In the aforementioned Group 1 at Saint-Cloud, Arrest had pushed eventual winner Dubai Mile to his limit, falling just a head behind in second, but a full six lengths clear of the reopposing Adelaide River.
This contest always looked like being a two-horse race and this was reflected in the betting with Arrest getting the edge at 10/11. There was a bit of movement for the Charlie Johnstontrained Hadrianus before the race though and after his strong second in Listed company at Epsom the month prior where he was behind only Epictetus he looked a potential danger.
Arrest looked a touch green early on, racing wider than ideal but quickly got back on track, moving up to lead from around three furlongs out and extending that lead further to take home the win with Dettori easing the colt late on. Adelaide River finished second but had never really recovered from his awkward start.
Further success followed in 2023 for Arrest as he picked up the win in the Geoffrey Freer Stakes at Newbury in August before an impressive second behind Continuous in the St Leger at Doncaster.

HIDDEN LAW looks ready for this step up in class judged on his impressive display in a valuable Newbury maiden and he gets the nod ahead of Grosvenor Square, who is Ryan Moore’s pick of the Ballydoyle duo and has the distinction of being the only Group-race winner in the line-up. Cadogan Place just got the better of Hidden Law when they met at Southwell at the end of March and the Frankel colt is another fascinating contender.

THE ESL EXPORT MAIDEN STAKES
2023 WINNER
Amleto was coming into this race off the back of a fairly modest two-year-season, but the son of Sea Of Stars looked much better in his second season. Ridden here by Tom Marquand, the William Haggas-trained gelding raced prominently throughout. Sitting in second for most of the race he moved up to take the lead inside the final two furlongs before soon going clear to win readily. The surprise of the day came as the 80/1 Paddy The Squire produced a stunning performance to take second

RACE DESCRIPTON
This one mile, two furlongs about 70 yards contest for three-years-olds is a maiden stakes - a race for horses that have yet to record a racecourse victory. There are a variety of reasons why the older horses in this race could still be maidens. Stoutly bred horses are unlikely to be seen at their best over the shorter distances of their juvenile season whilst a setback or injury can curtail even the most precociously bred horse’s two-year-old career

2023 WINNER HODLER
The Jim Boyle trained Hodler came into this race off the back of below par effort at Newmarket a month prior, when seventh of nine. With Ryan Sexton back in the saddle for this race he looked rejuvenated, starting strongly and just getting better as the race progressed. He was midfield for much of the race, biding his time, before pushing onto to challenged just before the final two furlongs He continued to make ground and kept on well inside the final furlong to take the win.

RACE DESCRIPTON
This is a seven furlong handicap race for four-year-olds and upwards which have been rated from 69 to 88. Once a horse has qualified for a handicap rating this is regularly reassessed. A below-par effort could result in a reduced rating whilst a strong performance could see the rating increased. Occasionally, horses are entered to race before their handicap rating has been reviewed and so to avoid recent winners being un-penalised they are allotted a mandatory penalty – usually 6lb.
Owners Prize Money. 1st £10040, 2nd £5020, 3rd £2510, 4th £1255, 5th £628, 6th £313, 7th £158, 8th £78. (Penalty Value £12740) 6 Eliminated Under Rules (I)9 and (I)10. colours no horse age st-lb Draw Jockey
