WELCOME
TO
THE CURRAGH Where Champions Are Made Good Afternoon, May I take this opportunity to welcome you to the Curragh for Day 3 of the Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby Festival. This is one of the great weekends of sport each year and while we are disappointed that we won’t be able to welcome our great supporters in person, we are delighted that they will all be able to engage with the Curragh in so many different ways. For our opening meeting of the year, we enjoyed excellent TV viewing figures and the engagement on social media channels was higher than ever seen before. We are very pleased that our new digital race card produced by Weatherbys was well received and allowed people get some of the race day experience in their own homes. It is a huge honour for the Curragh that the Al Attiya family of Al Wasmiyah Stud have agreed to sponsor the feature race of the day, the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes and we look forward to working closely with them to develop the partnership over the next three years. I would also like to thank our other race sponsors for the generous support of the racecourse today - Weatherbys Ireland, Paddy Power, Finlay Volvo, Barronstown Stud, Equine Medirecord and acknowledge the support of the Irish European Breeders Fund. Your support at this very difficult time is great appreciated. I would particularly like to thank the owners with runners here today. The owners make an invaluable contribution to racing, we are very grateful to you for your support and look forward to having you back soon. We will also miss our members and all our loyal customers who create great atmosphere in the Curragh. This has been a very difficult time for everybody as we work our way through Covid-19. On behalf of the Board and all my colleagues at the Curragh, I would like to say a very big thank you to our frontline workers who have done such a wonderful job in getting us all through this. Thankfully, we appear to be dealing with this challenge well as a country and this could not have happened without the efforts of these heroes. I hope that you and your family are well and please stay safe and I look forward to welcoming you back to the Curragh before too long.

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 5

CURRAGH COMMENT SNOWFALL really caught the eye when finishing third on her debut over 5f at Navan earlier in the month and that form was boosted when the second subsequently placed in the Albany at Royal Ascot. This daughter of Deep Impact is out of a Group 3 winner over 1m 4f, who is also a full-sister to the Arc winner Found, which suggests that this filly should only improve for the step up in trip. Aliyza is another well-bred filly who should improve for her debut experience, while Willow and Sister Rosetta are arguably the pick of the newcomers.

No corresponding race last year.
CURRAGH COMMENT WEMBLEY is the fifth foal out of a mare whose four previous offspring (all by Galileo) have all earned black type. That includes the Group 1 winner Johannes Vermeer and the Group 2 second Petite Mustique, which means this son of Galileo merits the utmost respect this afternoon. Hudson River has to be of some interest given that he is the first foal out of the dual Nunthorpe winner Mecca’s Angel. With Ger Lyons’ yard in such good form Lust also makes the shortlist, while any market support for Iowa would have to be noted.

CURRAGH COMMENT NAPA VALLEY couldn’t have been much more impressive when scoring on debut over a mile earlier this month for the Ballydoyle team and despite showing plenty of pace there, he is fancied to take this extra couple of furlongs in his stride. The three-year-old beat some potentially nice types that day, and can prove too strong for more experienced stablemate Keats, who got off the mark at Gowran Park nine days ago. Rebel Tale might prove best of the remainder.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. CURRAGH COMMENT Maid Of Spirit made a winning stable debut for Ken Condon here earlier this month and the gutsy mare, who is in foal and looking to make hay while time allows, won’t mind the drop back to 5f. The game course regular Fridtjof Nansen wasn’t far back in third on that occasion and is respected, while Urban Beat shaped with encouragement in a Listed contest last weekend and the stable are in good form. Some of his strongest performances came here last year, winning at this venue three times in 2019, and Denis Hogan’s gelding can prove himself at this level. THE ALWASMIYAH PRETTY POLLY STAKES Named after the high-class Pretty Polly, this race has a rich history with the names of many a talented mare on the roll of honour. Pretty Polly herself was unbeaten as a two-year-old, winning a series of races under the handling of Peter Gilpin for owner-breeder Major Eustace Loader. In her three-year-old season she set a course record for the English 1,000 Guineas, before going on to land the Epsom Oaks and the St Leger at Doncaster, completing the Fillies’ Triple Crown. Her career saw further success as she raced on as a four and five-year-old, winning back-to-back renewals of the Coronation Cup in 1905 and 1906. Her legacy can be traced back through the pedigree foundations which she laid during Pretty Polly her time at stud. She features heavily in the pedigree of Brigadier Gerard, Derby winner St Paddy and as a distant relative of Northern Dancer. A quick scan down the roll of honour and you’ll notice one name stands out in particular; Vincent O’Brien. The first master of Ballydoyle trained seven winners of this race, landing the first in 1959 with Little Mo. He teamed up with Lester Piggott and Robert Sangster to win back-to-back renewals with Godetia in 1979 and Calandra in 1980. More recent years have seen a series of classy mares land the race. Alexander Goldrun gave Jim Bolger and Kevin Manning successive wins in 2005 and 2006, with Peeping Fawn giving Aidan O’Brien a win in 2007.
Alexander Goldrun
The British have a good record in recent years, with Dar Re Mi and Izzi Top winning for John Gosden and William Buick in 2009 and 2012, and Roger Varian has saddled Ambivalent and Nezwaah to win in 2013 and 2017 respectively.
In the Qatari culture, the Sidra tree is the iconic symbol of the country’s heritage. The Sidra has grown in the of Qatar for generations with Alwasmiyah Stud desert roots that reach deep into the earth. With fruit and flowers that nourish and leaves that heals, the Sidra became a beacon of comfort in the harsh desert environment. The Sidra also provide shade and shelter to travelers and scholars, who would escape the desert heat, gather together and share knowledge. Over time, the Sidra came to represent nourishment, strength and courage, as well as learning and growth. In the hearts and the minds of the people of Qatar, the Sidra tree exemplifies perseverance, solidarity and determination. 28

Hat-trick seeker Will Be King is high on the shortlist in his present mood and can fight it out for the silver medal with the unexposed Centroid and Yenillik, who is moving outside of maiden company and appears on a workable mark.

CURRAGH COMMENT Willie Mullins appears to have a strong hand, with his team headed by SHARJAH, who enjoyed another excellent hurdling campaign and beat all bar Epatante in the Champion Hurdle on his most recent outing. He could be well treated on the level, but his stablemate Jon Snow is just as likely to be ahead of his mark and is a threat under Colin Keane. De Name Escapes Me, Dalton Highway and Tony Martin’s new recruit Buckman Tavern also command attention in a competitive affair.
DANGER: JON SNOW
RACE EIGHT
WIN: SHARJAH
