WELCOME

TO

THE CURRAGH Where Champions Are Made Welcome to the Curragh for Tattersalls Gold Cup day While we are sorry that we can’t welcome our supporters to the Curragh, we are pleased that you will all be able to engage with the Curragh in so many different ways. We are very pleased with the response to our new digital race card which allows people to get some of the race day experience in their own homes. I would like to thank Edmond Mahony, Chairman of Tattersalls and his team for their continued support of The Curragh. The Tattersalls Gold Cup is a very special race which is usually run during the Tattersalls Irish Guineas Festival in late May. It enjoys an impressive role of honour with previous winners including Decorated Knight, Al Kazeem, Fantastic Light, Montjeu, Grey Swallow, Golden Fleece and Daylami. Magical who landed the race last year will attempt to be the first horse since So You Think to win the race in consecutive years The Rogers family have had a close association with the race since it’s inception and their magnificent perpetual trophy will be given to the winning owner to keep for the year. In addition to Tattersalls, I would like to thank the Irish European Breeders Fund, Manguard Plus and Mongey Communications for sponsoring races today. We are delighted to work with Into Kildare, the Tourism Authority of Kildare, to help promote the fantastic work they are doing to attract visitors to our wonderful county and we welcome them as a sponsor this afternoon. Sponsors make a very valuable contribution to racing and we are very fortunate to have great sponsors supporting us today. These are challenging times for all of us and we are very grateful to you all for your generous support of the Curragh. I would particularly like to thank the owners with runners here today. The owners make an invaluable contribution to racing, we are very grateful to you for your support and look forward to having you back in the Curragh again soon. We also miss our members and all our loyal customers who create great atmosphere in the Curragh, and we look forward to welcoming them all back as soon as it is safe to do so. This has been a very difficult time for everybody as we work our way through Covid-19. On behalf of the Board and all my colleagues at the Curragh, I would like to say a very big thank you to our frontline workers who have done such a wonderful job in getting us all through this. Thankfully, we appear to be dealing with this challenge well as a country and this could not have happened without the efforts of these heroes. I hope that you and your family are well and please stay safe and I look forward to welcoming you back to the Curragh before too long. PAT KEOGH Chief Executive

The Handicapper allots ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicapper to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring penalties and allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicapped races the rating shown is that each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating. 6

No corresponding race last year.

CURRAGH COMMENT ST MARK’S BASILICA is certainly bred to have lots of ability, being a half-brother to dual Group 1 winner Magna Grecia, and he has a 1,300,000gns price tag to live up to. Although Coill Avon and Procellarum bring a decent enough level of form to the table and are respected in opposition, they are both still maidens after two tries each and it will be disappointing if Aidan O’Brien’s Siyouni colt isn’t up to beating them. The master of Ballydoyle saddles another interesting newcomer in the shape of Duke Of Mantua, who is a half-brother to numerous winners including US Grade 3 scorer Turning Top.

WIN: ST MARK’S BASILICA

RACE TWO

PALIFICO was only denied by a neck on her racecourse debut over C&D last month and the fifth has won subsequently. If reproducing that level of performance she could take some stopping, though Aidan O’Brien introduces a full-sister to multiple Group 1 winner Roly Poly in the shape of Elizabethan, and she commands the utmost respect. Harannda is another newcomer worth noting representing the powerful Dermot Weld operation, while Ger Lyons is flying this year and Rosa Woodsii should know her job on debut.

THE CURRAGH TRAINING GROUNDS The Curragh Training Grounds has long been regarded as one of the best training facilities in the world and has been home to generations of Classic, Group and Graded winners. Set on approximately 1,500 acres in the heart of Kildare the Curragh Training Grounds has a variety of gallops to meet every requirement. Thanks to the generous support of Eva Maria Bucher-Haefner, a major refurbishment project is near completion. The range of gallops provides trainers with great scope to tailor each horse’s work to suit their individual needs, with gallops varying in length, gradient and surface. The natural turf gallops which have been nurtured for centuries in a unique environment are complemented by a range of artificial surfaces which can be used for all types of work during all seasons. With over 50 trainers currently on the Curragh, owners or prospective owners have a variety of yards to choose from in order to utilise the amazing facilities available. Any horse in training on the Curragh has access to the same facilities as champions such as Sea the Stars, Sinndar, Harzand or recent classic winner Search for a Song. The Old Vic and Free Eagle Gallops The Old Vic, originally commissioned by his Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum and named after his 1989 Irish Derby winner, runs in front of the racecourse stands and climbs steadily for a mile and a furlong. It is the Curraghs flagship gallop for fast work and is used in the preparation for the big race day. The Free Eagle is a new 9-furlong sand and fibre gallop made possible due to the generous support of Eva Maria Bucher-Haefner and is a huge addition to the training grounds. The uphill gallop that runs alongside the Old Vic is named after Moyglare Studs Group 1 winner Free Eagle who himself used the Curragh facilities every day of his racing career. This gallop has all the attributes of the Old Vic but provides an alternative option for trainers to exercise a horse on a slower sand and fibre surface instead of woodchip.

18

S Maddenstown and the Little Curragh Maddenstown and the Little Curragh provide the boundaries on either side of the Curragh. Both facilities are steeped in history and have been home to countless Group 1 winners over the years. Maddenstown has its own 7-furlong grass gallop as well and a 7-furlong wood chip gallop. These have now been complemented by an 11-furlong sand and fibre gallop which will be huge addition to trainers that side of the Curragh. In recent times Group 1 winners such as Chelsea Rose and Saoire were trained in Maddenstown as well as speedsters such as Dandy Man, Arctic and Hit the Bid. The Little Curragh was home to one of the best racehorses we have ever seen in Sea the Stars and more recently the consistent Group 1 performer Romanised. The little Curragh offers a 7-furlong round woodchip gallop with a shoot as well as a 5 ½-furlong sand and fibre straight gallop. The Round Sand and Schooling To ensure that National Hunt trainers are well catered for, the training grounds have an all-weather schooling strip as well as extensive schooling options over both hurdles and fences on grass. The Round Sand is a 9 Furlong round circuit used for cantering flat and national hunt horses. The Round Sand provides the strongest test of the all-weather gallops available on the Curragh and therefore is widely used for fast work by national hunt trainers. Year in, year out the Curragh produces a number of top-class national hunt performers. The roll of honour is endless but includes champions such as Hardy Eustace, Our Conor, Like a Butterfly, Papillion, Comanche Court, Numbersixvalverde and most recently Cheltenham festival winner City Island.

LEGENDARY

WINNERS

TATTERSALLS GOLD CUP We look back at some of the most memorable winners of the Tattersalls Gold Cup in recent years.

HISTORY The Tattersalls Gold Cup was granted Group 1 status in 1999 and since then it has become established as one of the most significant contents for older horses in the opening months of the European racing season. Usually ran on Guineas weekend, the race has been pushed back in the calendar for this season.

2000 MONTJEU One of the most memorable winners in those early years as a Group 1 was undoubtedly the great Montjeu. Trained by John Hammond in France, the son of Sadler’s Wells arrived at The Curragh for the 2000 renewal of the race having already won the Prix du Jockey Club, the Irish Derby and the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe the previous season. Sent off at 1/3, he didn’t disappoint under Mick Kinane, showing a fine turn of foot to escape a pocket in the closing stages and run out the comfortable winner.

2005 GREY SWALLOW 2005 produced a sensational renewal of the race that saw the five-time Group 1 winner Bago come over from France to race against the pick of the Irish colts in the shape of the Dermot Weld-trained Grey Swallow and the John Oxx-trained Azamour. In what was an enthralling contest, it was the previous season’s Irish Derby winner Grey Swallow that succeeded in holding off the brave bid of Bago in a tremendous finish.

HURRICANE RUN

Andre Fabre saddled his only winner of this race in 2006, when Hurricane Run landed the spoils in the hands of Kieren Fallon. The four-year-old had won the Irish Derby here during his Classic campaign and finished that season with victory in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe at Longchamp. Fallon was also in the saddle for this victory as he made all on the colt, stretching clear of the smart filly Alexander Goldrun to win by seven lengths at the finish.

2012

SO YOU THINK

Since it’s elevation to Group 1 status, only two horses have succeeded in winning the Tattersalls Gold Cup on two separate occasions. The first was the Aidan O’Brientrained So You Think. The son of High Chaparral arrived to Ireland with a huge reputation having won five Group 1s in Australia for Bart Cummings and he consolidated his position as an international star by winning the 2011 and 2012 renewals of the Tattersalls Gold Cup in great style.

2013 & 2015 AL KAZEEM

The second two-time winner of the race was the Roger Charlton-trained Al Kazeem. The son of Dubawi got the better of Camelot to win the 2013 renewal and he came back to the Curragh two years later to beat Fascinating Rock, Postponed and The Grey Gatsby in an epic renewal of the race. This performance was even more remarkable as he had been retired to stud following his five-year-old campaign and to get the horse right back to his best was some achievement for trainer Roger Charlton. 21

MAGICAL

GALILEO - HALFWAY TO HEAVEN

HHHHH Trained by AIDAN O’BRIEN

Last year’s winner returns to reclaim her crown off the back of a brilliant seasonal debut in the Pretty Polly over course and distance last time out. Her glittering CV includes the British & Irish Champion Stakes & she’s remained in training for this race.

BUCKHURST AUSTRALIA (GB) - ARTFUL

HHH Trained by JOSEPH O’BRIEN

An improving type, he’s a treble Group 3 winner, with all those successes coming over the course and distance of today’s race. He’ll have a task beating Magical, but he’s firmly on the up and this trip seems to suit him perfectly.

ARMORY GALILEO - AFTER

HHH Trained by AIDAN O’BRIEN

This unexposed three-year-old was fourth in the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas and his pedigree suggests he’ll be fine over this longer trip. He’s hardened after his five runs as a two-year-old and looks hold a chance of finishing second today.

LEO DE FURY AUSTRALIA (GB) - ATTIRE

HH Trained by JESSICA HARRINGTON

A Group 2 winner last time in the Mooresbridge, that was his best performance to date. Only a head separated him and Buckhurst in the Royal Whip in August last year but he received weight that day and Buckhurst has improved further since.

SIR DRAGONET CAMELOT (GB) - SPARROW

HH Trained by AIDAN O’BRIEN

With form figures of 222 this season, things haven’t quite gone his way since a close fifth in the Epsom Derby of 2019. Buckhurst beat him last time out in the Alleged Stakes and the placings should be confirmed.

SEARCH FOR A SONG GALILEO - POLISHED GEM

HH

Trained by DERMOT WELD

Last year’s Irish St Leger winner was pulled up in the Munster Oaks last time after slipping on the bend and that run can be ignored. Despite that, this trip looks much short of her optimum as her season builds towards a repeat of her Leger heroics.

LAST YEAR’S WINNER

MAGICAL

It was tough to envisage Magical being beaten in this race last year, and her odds of 2/7 demonstrated the massive chance she held. Stablemate Flag Of Honour took the field along at a good gallop and ensured Magical only ever had two lengths to make up on her stablemate. She duly delivered under Ryan Moore, pulling away easily to win by seven lengths in a 1-2 for Aidan O’Brien with Flag Of Honour back in second.

THE VERDICT The market suggests it’ll be almost impossible for Magical to not win this race, and on the balance of all form that seems a logical conclusion. Winner of both the British & Irish Champion Stakes last year, retirement was considered but with the Pretty Polly and this race looking at her mercy it must’ve been an easy decision to keep her in training and enhance her already illustrious CV. Armory has a shout of finishing closest to her, he’s unexposed and has smart form following his run in the Tattersalls Irish 2,000 Guineas. Buckhurst must also be considered without Magical, he’s a treble Group 2 winner and relishes this course and distance. Search For A Song has class but this trip looks much too short for her.

CURRAGH COMMENT MAGICAL was in a different league to her rivals in this last year and laughed at her opposition when making a sparkling reappearance in the Pretty Polly. She hasn’t been beaten in Ireland since finishing fourth in the 2018 Matron Stakes and is fully expected to land Group 1 win number six. With this race being run later than usual, three-year-olds are now eligible and Armory flies the flag for the Classic generation following his pleasing comeback in the Irish 2,000 Guineas. Leo De Fury took his game to a new level in the Mooresbridge Stakes, while Buckhurst disposed of Sir Dragonet in the Alleged.

CURRAGH COMMENT Adam Farragher’s reward for steering RAYOUNPOUR to a breakthrough victory in the Cork Derby is another chance to partner Michael Halford’s gelding, who can defy an 8lb rise to follow up. Winner Takes Itall arrives on the back of his first Flat triumph, although hurdling exploits would suggest that Future Proof is better treated in this sphere. Bucky Larson is a big danger if seeing out the mile and a quarter, while Halimi should run his usual honest race.

HORSE WELFARE - A PRIORITY At every race meeting there are specially qualified equine veterinary surgeons on duty to look after the wellbeing of all the horses racing. There is a vet in attendance at the start of each race who, follows the horses throughout the race and is quickly on hand if a casualty occurs. It is normal procedure to erect screens around any horse receiving veterinary treatment. This allows the veterinary surgeon some privacy to fully assess the horses’ injuries and race goers should not assume the worst if screens are erected around an injured horse. The Blue Cross ambulance is always present to transport the horse back to the stable yard for further treatment if necessary. A second veterinary surgeon is in attendance in the stable yard to assess and treat any horses requiring such attention post race. The horses’ welfare is always our priority. BABY POWER coped admirably with a 4lb rise for her reappearance second at Fairyhouse when landing the spoils back at the County Meath circuit and she could defy another hike in this. Edessann is up 8lb for his win at Cork and has been found wanting off similar ratings in the past, while Lincoln took advantage of the handicapper’s leniency when scoring at Fairyhouse but this will ask a lot more off 4lb higher. Ducky Mallon ran a solid race over 7f at Leopardstown last time and is a former course winner who could go well.

CURRAGH COMMENT Zarzyni, You’resobeautiful and Flaming Princess have all acquitted themselves well in some hot contests so far in their careers and add a touch of class to proceedings. However, it may be best to side with a proven handicapper and NOT NOW ZEB fits that bill. He bounced back to his best when getting the better of Half Nutz (second) at Navan earlier this month and is backed to follow up here. Big Gossey made it back-to-back victories when scoring over 6f here last month and appears to be on an upward curve, while Lady Maura opened her account with an emphatic win when dropped back to this trip at Navan and looks a player once again.

WIN: NOT NOW ZEB

DANGER: BIG GOSSEY

CURRAGH COMMENT It is very hard to oppose NA BLIANTA BEO, who was far from disgraced when finishing fourth in a Listed race at Naas two starts ago. When last seen, the daughter of Invincible Spirit was only beaten a neck in a maiden at the same venue and the winner of that contest was second to Millisle in a Group 3 earlier in the week. Call Of The Jungle has made the frame on four of her six starts to date and she should be thereabouts once again. I Am Thunder and Boundless Power are others with valid form claims, while Mudawy merits respect on his debut.

CURRAGH COMMENT Master Matt ran well when placed in the Scurry last time and is expected to show up well off this 1lb lower mark, though narrow preference is for TIDE OF TIME, who wore down the thriving Strong Johnson to score at Navan earlier this month and could feasibly defy a 6lb rise. Inflection Point opened his account at Bellewstown recently and likely has more to offer, while Boughtinthedark has been in great order for Denis Hogan since the restart and cannot be left out of calculations either.
