2020 has undoubtedly been a challenging year and, although the Pertemps St Leger will be run behind closed doors, whoever wins the 244th running of the World’s oldest Classic will be adding their names to a prestigious roll of honour and making history. Doncaster racecourse has been home to the St Leger since 1778, and has seen some legendary horses win the historic race through the decades. Today will be no different. Will Pyledriver follow in the footsteps of Logician under Frankie Dettori and achieve the Great Voltigeur and Leger double? Only 14 horses in history have achieved such a feat. Or can Irish Derby and Queen’s Vase winner, Santiago, provide Aidan O’Brien with a 7th win in the big race… we will, of course, find out. The feature race today is undoubtedly the Pertemps St Leger Stakes at 3:35pm, but the Champagne Stakes, Doncaster’s Group 2 feature for two-year olds, is also one to watch at 1pm. Previous Champagne Stakes winners include Too Darn Hot, who went on to achieve three Group 1 wins, and, of course, Flying Dutchman who was nearly undefeated winning all but one of his 15 career races. Will we see a future champion grace the turf this afternoon? Although crowds won’t be present today, I’d like to welcome all the owners who are allowed to attend today’s St Leger and wish them all an enjoyable afternoon with us. I am also delighted to welcome back Pertemps as sponsors of the prestigious St Leger. Pertemps return to sponsor the St Leger having previously partnered the event between 1995-1998. We are incredibly grateful for their support during what has been a difficult year and look forward to working together in the future. Thanks goes to each of today’s race sponsors. I hope you enjoy watching the 244th running of the St Leger and hope to welcome you back safely soon.
THANK YOU
TO OUR SPONSORS The Doncaster Racecourse Executive would like to thank our sponsors and wish them an enjoyable and prosperous day’s racing.

Star Ratings Explained Each horse has been given a star rating, these are defined below: HHHHH Selected to win the race. HHHHI Good chance of being placed. HHHII By no means out of the reckoning but at least one or two hold stronger claims HHIII Unlikely to win but not totally without hope. HIIII Can be given little or no chance.
OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS EXPLAINED The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

MATTHEW FLINDERS has a progressive profile and there’s every chance the best is still yet to come from Ed Walker’s 3-y-o, so he makes plenty of appeal. Aweedram arrives in top form and ought to be in the shake up again on first start for his new yard, while Magical Morning retains potential now returning to 1m.

Things panned out perfectly for LIMATO when he landed the Criterion Stakes for the second year running on June’s reappearance, but that performance does confirm he’s still capable of very smart form despite his advancing years. A winner of this back in 2015, he looks the way to go, for all Wichita is a very dangerous opponent on his early-summer form. One Master also demands consideration.

The Story of Yorkshire’s only Classic THE ST LEGER IS THE WORLD’S OLDEST CLASSIC Most impactfully on 3 September when Prime Minster Neville Chamberlain broadcast to the nation that Great Britain was at war, the St Leger was cancelled. The outbreak of World War 2 made the St Leger the only British Classic to have missed a year since its’ inaugural running.
St Leger is a racing festival with a lot of history, and the longest roll of honour in racing rtsman Named after local spo o lived Anthony St. Leger, wh caster at Park Hill near Don The first running of the St Leger was back in 1776 at Cantley Common, before the event was moved to Doncaster in 1778, where it has called home ever since. However; wartime disruption, resulted in the St Leger being transferred to Newmarket in World War 1, and again in (1942-1944), the event also resided in Thirsk (1940), Manchester (1941), and York (1945).
Let’s look back at some of the fierce rivalries and successes in the prestigious St Leger Stakes… The story starts with a bay mare owned by Lord Rockingham the event’s first organiser. None of the inaugural races 6 runners were formally named; until 1913 there was no requirement for three-year old British racehorses to have official names. It was only in 1828 in a British Racing Publication that the winner was named ‘Allabaculia’, a name thought to derive from the 18th century adventurer Ali Bay Kuli.
The St Leger Stakes is also the final leg of the English Triple Crown; which begins with the 2000 Guineas and continues with the Epsom Derby. Therefore; one of the St Leger’s most celebrated winners; is undoubtedly West Australia; who became the first horse horse to achieve the triple crown, galloping to glory in 1853, for trainer John Scott, who remains the race’s leading trainer, with a remarkable 16 victories. Fast forward a few decades and in 1902 a filly named Sceptre was to enter the record books, winning not only the St Leger, but both the 1902 1000 and 2000 Guineas within 2 days of each other, and polishing it off with a victory in the Epsom Oaks, all in the same year. Sceptre became the only winner of four classics, a feat that still remains unchallenged.
In recent years the English Triple Crown has proved out of reach for many challengers.
Several horses have won the first two legs of the series but found the St Leger a step too far. A story too true for odds-onfavourite Camelot; a scintillating champion in the 2012 2000 Guineas and Derby but unable to claw back the lead of Godolphin’s Encke, so had to settle for second in the St Leger. The most recent success was that of Nijinsky in 1970, who provided jockey Lester Piggott with a seventh win in the St Leger Stakes. Nijinsky not only won the English Triple Crown, but also celebrated victories in the Irish St Leger- an event inspired by Yorkshire’s Classic. Fast forward to recent years, and Logician was a horse to behold in 2019 Fresh from victory in the Great Voltigeur Stakes at York’s Ebor Festival, Logician, stormed to victory in the St Leger Stakes, under Frankie Dettori to give the Italian a sixth St Leger title. Only 14 horses in history have achieved such a feat… and Logician did it in style achieving a race record for fastest winning time, in a staggering 3m 00.27s.

An interesting renewal of the final Classic of the season and the highlyprogressive HUKUM gets the vote. He looked a bona-fide Group 1 performer in the Geoffrey Freer at Newbury and this test should suit. Pyledriver defied a penalty in great style in the Great Voltigeur at York and is a big danger, while Irish Derby winner Santiago holds solid claims for a yard that has won this 6 times.

ARABIAN RACE 4.40 ONE MILE, TWO FURLONGS OR THEREABOUTS. FOR PUREBRED ARABIANS, 4 YEARS OLD ONLY.
UAE PRESIDENT CUP (UK ARABIAN DERBY) GROUP 1PA The UAE President Cup are proud sponsors of Arabian Racing and have kindly sponsored this race. Penalty Value: £80,000. £40,000 to the winner, £16,000 to the second, £9,600 to the third, £6,400 to the fourth, £4,800 to the fifth, £3,200 to the sixth. Weights: Colts & Geldings 9st Fillies 8st 10lb. Allowances - Fillies 4lb
RACE SUMMARY Sattam shaped really well on his debut last week but this is a big step up in grade. Alameen looks the best of the UK-based runners; he progressed with each run last season and won in Belgium beating a fair yardstick. He takes a step up in trip which should suit on pedigree. Jugurtha De Monlau still looks a little bit raw but took his form to a new level when winning at Vichy last time out where he was strong through the line. He has the second highest rating in the field so has to be respected. French-trained runners have a fantastic record in this race, winning it thirteen times since the turn of the century. The selection is Hattal who won the French Arabian Derby when last seen. That was a career best effort and, for all he still looked as though the experience may well bring him on, a further repeat performance will make him tough to beat. He is exceptionally well bred, his Dam Mizzna and Grandam Unchainedd Melody were two of the best Arabian Mares of all time, and he looks to have inherited a bit of their star quality.
