THE JOCKEY CLUB WELCOMES YOU
Welcome to Epsom Downs Racecourse A very warm welcome to Epsom Downs for Cazoo Derby Day, featuring the 243rd running of the world’s greatest Flat race and one of the greatest days in horseracing. Derby Day is always a special date in the calendar, but we are particularly excited that today is part of the official Platinum Jubilee celebrations to mark 70 years of Her Majesty The Queen’s reign. We are so thrilled to have you all with us for racing’s most spectacular carnival in this historic year. Also joining us will be a host of Her Majesty’s current and former jockeys, trainers and retired racehorses, all of whom will join in the celebrations of The Queen’s remarkable contribution to racing and the nation. I would like to thank Cazoo for their sponsorship of this two-day fixture, as well as their support of four of today’s seven races. We are also grateful to World Pool, Simpex Express and the Japan Racing Association (JRA) for their generous sponsorship this afternoon. I am delighted that Masayuki Goto, President and CEO of The Japan Racing Association, is here to present the Tokyo Trophy. I would also like to welcome members of the International Thoroughbred Breeders’ Federation. The highlight of the day is The Cazoo Derby, the most significant race in the Flat calendar. Last year’s winner was Adayar, who went on to become the first Derby winner to win the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth QIPCO Stakes in 20 years. At 4.30pm we will watch The Cazoo Derby (In Memory of Lester Piggott) - the first time the race has ever been run in memory of an individual. This follows the sad news of the death of the most successful rider in the history of the race, with nine Derby victories to his name. Lester was one of the greatest jockeys of the modern era and there will be a minute’s applause at 4pm today in his memory. Away from the racecourse there is plenty to see. Inside The Queen Elizabeth II Stand today there is a collection of one-off hats inspired by the seven decades of The Queen’s reign, designed by leading milliners, which will be auctioned in aid of Brain Tumour Research. More information on how to bid is available later in this racecard and I would urge you to take a look. On The Hill we have introduced the Jubilee Family Festival, which will provide a host of fun entertainment for guests of all ages and a wonderful way for young families to enjoy the day. Interactive displays and activities abound in The Racing Showcase Area, which features some of the wonderful charities and organisations who support the racing industry, whilst highlighting The Queen’s passion for horses. We hope that however you are spending your time with us, you have a wonderful day at Epsom Downs and I wish all of our runners and their connections the very best of luck.
Julia Budd Chair of Epsom Downs Racecourse

OFFICIAL BHA RATINGS
The BHA Handicappers allot ratings to horses once they have taken part in a sufficient number of races to enable the Handicappers to make a numerical assessment of each horse’s ability. The principal purpose of the ratings is to determine the weight to be carried by each runner in handicap races, with the Handicappers aiming to provide each participant with an equal chance based on its best recent form under its optimum conditions. A horse rated 100, for example, would be set to carry 1lb more than a horse rated 99 (ignoring any penalties or allowances). The ratings published in the racecard for handicap races are the ratings that were used to calculate the weight to be carried by each horse, whilst in non-handicaps races the rating shown is that of each runner at the time that the entries for the race were confirmed. Any subsequently published change to a rating, either up or down, is shown in brackets following the rating.

PARADE OF THE QUEEN’S FORMER RACEHORSES 12.30PM As part of the celebrations To mark The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) is showcasing Her Majesty’s passion for the thoroughbred by bringing together five of her former racehorses to parade on Cazoo Derby Day. The parade takes place in the paddock from 12.30pm and highlights the versatility of the thoroughbred together with the range of activities open to racehorses when they finish their racing careers. Many of The Queen’s racehorses have been retrained in different equine disciplines and she follows their progress with interest and takes considerable pride in their success. Today’s parade includes Barbers Shop and Quadrille, two horses that have reached the very top in their chosen careers after racing. Very few thoroughbreds can match the level of success enjoyed by Barbers Shop in the show-ring, while Quadrille is the highest performing former racehorse on the UK dressage circuit. Retraining of Racehorses (RoR) is British Horseracing’s official charity for the welfare of horses that have retired from racing and it annually stages more than 40 separate competition series across 15 different disciplines, catering for all levels of ability, from grassroots to elite. The disciplines include dressage, showing, polo, eventing, show jumping, endurance, hunting and horseball. BARBERS SHOP ridden by Katie Jerram-Hunnable
20-year-old by Saddlers’ Hall Formerly trained by Nicky Henderson Breeder – Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother Leading today’s parade is Barbers Shop. Now aged 20, Barbers Shop was bred by Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother. He raced in the colours of The Queen and was trained by Nicky Henderson, winning eight races and being placed in a King George VI Chase and a Hennessy Gold Cup. Since his retirement from racing in 2012, Barbers Shop has been in the care of top showing producer Katie Jerram-Hunnable and he became one of the leading former racehorses to compete in showing classes. His second career highlights include being crowned champion at Hickstead and becoming a three times winner and champion at The Royal Windsor Horse Show. He is now retired from competitive showing but regularly participates in RoR parades.
FIRST RECEIVER ridden by Ellie Greenhalgh
5-year-old gelding by New Approach Formerly trained by Sir Michael Stoute Breeder – The Queen Like Barbers Shop, First Receiver is also based with Katie Jerram-Hunnable. This son of New Approach was last seen on the racetrack at Royal Ascot in 2020 when finishing second in the Hampton Court Stakes. Still only a 5-yearold, First Receiver has a long showing career ahead of him and he tasted early success when winning the Tattersalls RoR In-Hand class at Royal Windsor Horse Show in 2021. He has been placed second in the three ridden RoR classes he has competed in so far this year and in the process has qualified for the final of the Tattersalls RoR Novice series at Aintree in August.
FORTH BRIDGE ridden by Captain Harry Grantham
9-year-old gelding by Bernardini Formerly trained by Michael Bell and Charlie Longsdon Breeder – The Queen Forth Bridge ran on the Flat, over hurdles and over fences and is now looking ahead to a career in dressage. Known at home as William, this handsome horse only joined Louise Robson’s ‘Thoroughbred Dressage’ team in late 2020 but he is already showing a real aptitude for the sport. On only his second outing, Forth Bridge qualified for the RoR Regional Dressage Championships at Preliminary level. He is turning out to be a very level-headed, exceptionally kind and trainable horse and Louise is excited for his future.
PRINCE’S TRUST ridden by Charlotte Thorne
12-year-old gelding by Invincible Spirit Formerly trained by Richard Hannon Snr and William Haggas Breeder – The Queen
Prince’s Trust had eight starts on the Flat, winning three races. However, in 2014 he sustained an injury which caused a premature end to his racing career and a year later he joined Louise Robson’s team of dressage horses. Affectionately known as Phillip, this shy and sensitive horse is now performing at Advanced level dressage and he has demonstrated an impressive capability for the higher-level movements. He has previously competed at the RoR National Dressage Championships at Aintree and the aim is to do so again this year.
QUADRILLE ridden by Louise Robson
15-year-old gelding by Danehill Dancer Formerly trained by Richard Hannon Snr Breeder - The Queen Ten years before First Receiver finished second at Royal Ascot, another of The Queen’s horses also filled the runnerup spot in the same race; Quadrille was beaten just a short-head in the 2010 running of the Hampton Court Stakes. The winner of three of his seven starts, this talented performer’s racing career was curtailed by a tendon injury, but it has not stopped Quadrille from thriving in a different discipline. Retrained by Louise Robson, Quadrille is now the highest performing former racehorse on the UK dressage circuit and competes at international Prix St George level. In 2019 he claimed a unique double, being crowned both RoR Dressage Elite Champion and RoR Horse of the Year. 9

TODAY’S
TOP TIPS RACE ONE
A highly competitive handicap to get us underway on Derby Day. Swilcan Bridge caught the eye when third here on Trials Day and again when narrowly beaten at Goodwood last time and Sweeping is another that we may not have seen the best of just yet. A marginal preference is for BLUE TRAIL who looked progressive over the winter and may well improve on his recent third place in Sandown Park’s Esher Cup for this step up in trip.
RACE TWO
TECHNIQUE looked to have wintered well when narrowly headed on her reappearance in the Nottinghamshire Oaks. The filly was a model of consistency last year so looks to hold decent claims. Mrs Fitzherbert and Bashkirova finished 1-2 in a Goodwood Listed race on their seasonal debuts and both will mount a big challenge to the selection. Potapova looks to be in a similar mould based on her narrow Listed defeat at Kempton Park.
RACE THREE
Megallan will have his supporters for the Gosden/Dettori pairing. He was sightly disappoining at Chester last time but it would be no surprise to see him bounce back over a slightly shorter trip today. But it was hard not to be impressed by MODERN NEWS who was an easy Windsor Listed winner last month suggesting he has plenty more to offer. Mutasaabeq is another who should be fighting out the finish.
RACE FOUR
The Dash is always a competitive affair and this year’s renewal looks equally challenging. The hat-trick seeking Live In The Dream appeals from stall 17 as does Tees Spirit from stall 10. But it might be worth taking a chance with STONE OF DESTINY who looks to have dropped to an attractive mark and is well drawn in stall 18. On his best form he shouldn’t be far away. Mid Winster and Sunday Sovereign are two more to keep and eye out for.
RACE FIVE
With 17 runners set to go to post this year’s Cazoo Derby looks a wide-open affair. Nation’s Pride, unbeaten on his last four starts was supplemented for £75,000 and he looks a colt with a very bright future. But it was hard not to be impressed by DESERT CROWN who ran away with the Dante at York and with only two starts to his name looks open to any amount of improvement. Stone Age could proove the pick of Aidan O’Brien’s trio.
RACE SIX
Soapy Stevens will be dangerous to write off based on his three starts this term. Midnights Legacy is only 3lb higher than when winning this race last year and arrives fresh after a hurdling campaign so looks of interest. Winter Reprise could prove a dark horse if building on a narrow defeat in France last time, as could FARHAN who looked progressive last year and he may strip fitter today with a couple of runs already under his belt.
RACE SEVEN
We finish Cazoo Derby day with a competitive 6f sprint handicap where a marginal preference is for last year’s Stewards’ Cup winner COMMANCHE FALLS. His form dipped after his Goodwood success but he looked to have bounced back on his reappearance at Doncaster. Regional looks an interesting contender with not many miles on the clock whilst Many A Star has been consistent this year and so shouldn’t be far away. 11

Lester Few people receive such worldwide acclaim that they can be identified by their first name alone. Lester Piggott, who passed away peacefully aged 86 last weekend, was one. Retiring from the saddle having won a record 30 British Classics, Lester will be remembered as one of the most iconic sports stars of his or any other generation.
Richards and Pat Eddery. But it was at Epsom Downs where his achievements remain unrivalled. A record nine Derby victories, six Oaks winners and an unprecedented nine Coronation Cups may never be eclipsed.
With 4,493 UK winners to his name only two jockeys have ever ridden more – Sir Gordon
12
A further tribute followed in 2019, when William Newton’s life-size bronze statue of Lester was unveiled on Derby Day by The Queen next to the Epsom Downs winner’s enclosure.
It was in 1951 as a 15 year old that Lester had his first Derby mount on Zucchero. The talented but quirky performer was left at the start that day, but handed the young rider some compensation two years later when providing him with his first Coronation Cup win.
The Jockey Club has honoured the world’s most famous jockey by renaming today’s Cazoo Derby as The Cazoo Derby (In Memory of Lester Piggott).
The rest, of course, is history and record breaking history at that. Lester would taste Derby success as an 18 year old on Never Say Die in 1954 and went on to win the premier Classic another eight times in total. Crepello (1957), St Paddy (1960), Sir Ivor (1968), Nijinsky (1970), Roberto (1972), Empery (1976), The Minstrel (1977) and Teenoso (1983) all passed the Epsom Downs winning post first in the hands of “The Long Fellow”.
Join us all for a minute’s applause at 4pm to celebrate the life of Lester Piggott. Champion. Genius. Icon.
Sir Ivor, Nijinsky, Roberto and The Minstrel were all saddled by the legendary Irish trainer Vincent O’Brien. And although Lester could prove to be challenging at times, his unrivalled ability to ride the unique Epsom Downs course surpassed all others as O’Brien’s son-in-law and Coolmore supremo, John Magnier, outlined in his tribute to Lester last weekend. He said: “At this time of year MV (Vincent O’Brien) was regularly frustrated by Lester playing musical chairs of what he would be riding in The Derby. “But he said, ‘you have to put up with him, otherwise you give the opposition a 7lbs advantage!’ He really was the greatest.” The last of Lester’s record 36 Derby mounts came aged 58 in 1994, when he partnered 33-1 chance Khamaseen into fifth place. When he started riding, Sir Gordon Richards and Charlie Smirke were his contemporaries while his final years saw him pitched against the likes of Steve Cauthen and Frankie Dettori. Indeed, “The Lester Piggott Years” began when Sir Winston Churchill was Prime Minister and ended with John Major inside 10 Downing Street. When he finally called time on his career, Lester was commemorated at Epsom Downs with the opening of the Lester Piggott Gates, officially unveiled by The Queen on Derby Day in 1996. Later that afternoon, Shaamit landed the premier Classic and was, appropriately, trained by Lester’s son-in-law William Haggas. 13

Charlie Appleby's Blue Trail is respected after his third in the Esher Cup last time but there may be better value to be found elsewhere, with Mr Big Stuff, who faced a troubled passage in the London Gold Cup on his latest start, a noteworthy contender. However, recent Sandown winner WAR HORSE gives the impression he can operate at a higher level than this in time and gets the vote. The improving Box To Box can also get involved.

THE QUEEN’S DERBY RUNNERS 24
During the 70 years of her reign, The Queen has seen her colours carried by 10 horses in the Derby. None came closer to winning than the first, Aureole, who was runner-up to Pinza in 1953 just four days after Her Majesty’s coronation. Aureole gained some compensation when winning the Coronation Cup at Epsom Downs in 1954 and also won the King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot. He went on to enjoy a highly successful stud career, siring the 1960 Derby winner St Paddy and being crowned champion sire in 1960 and 1961.
Full record of The Queen’s Derby runners: 1953 AUREOLE (9-1) Jockey: Harry Carr Finishing Position: 2nd 1954 LANDAU (100-7) Jockey: Willie Snaith Finishing Position: 8th 1956 ATLAS (50-1) Jockey: Harry Carr Finishing Position: 5th 1957 DOUTELLE (100-6) Jockey: Harry Carr Finishing Position: 10th 1958 MINER’S LAMP (100-6) Jockey: Bill Rickaby Finishing Position: dead-heated for 6th 1959 ABOVE SUSPICION (100-6) Jockey: Doug Smith Finishing Position: 5th 1978 ENGLISH HARBOUR (12-1) Jockey: Joe Mercer Finishing Position: 18th 1979 MILFORD (15-2) Jockey: Lester Piggott Finishing Position: 10th 1981 CHURCH PARADE (25-1) Jockey: Willie Carson Finishing Position: 5th 2011 CARLTON HOUSE (5-2 Fav) Jockey: Ryan Moore Finishing position: 3rd
Over the ensuing 28 years, The Queen’s eight Derby runners struggled to match Aureole’s performance, with the best finishing position being fifth, achieved by Atlas (1956), Above Suspicion (1959) and Church Parade (1981). It was a full 30 years after Church Parade that The Queen was next represented in The Derby, by Carlton House in 2011. The first of The Queen’s horses to start as favourite, the 5-2 chance did not enjoy the clearest of runs and also lost a front shoe in the closing stages as he came home third behind Pour Moi. Edward VII, The Queen’s great grandfather, is the only reigning monarch to have owned a Derby winner – Minoru in 1909.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
A chance is taken with MAJESTIC GLORY. She raced freely in the Fred Darling on her most recent start and Andrew Balding's charge will need to settle upped in trip. However, a first-time hood is employed and if that works the oracle the daughter of Frankel could land a telling blow. Mrs Fitzherbert (winner) overcame a troubled run when repelling the challenge of Bashkirova (second) at Goodwood in April and it will be interesting to see if that form is upheld. Of the remainder, Potapova is preferred to Roman Mist.

WITH THANKS AND FAREWELL TO JULIA BUDD since become known all over the world, face challenges never encountered before. Julia’s passion, experience and sound judgment have helped to ensure that Epsom Downs finishes her term with the eyes of the world focused upon The Derby, and ready for a new and exciting chapter in the years to come. The sport is also fortunate that Julia will continue in her role as Chair of both the Racing Foundation and the British Racing School. I know that as a committed racing fan and owner this racecourse and its most famous contest will always hold a special place in Julia’s heart. It is testament to her time as Chair that the feeling will always be mutual.
I would like to take this opportunity to extend my thanks, and those of The Jockey Club, the Racecourse Committee and the wider executive team, to Julia as her term as the Chair of Epsom Downs concludes. Today’s Jubilee events are momentous for this unique and historic racecourse and our sport more widely, and it is a fitting end to Julia’s tenure and the dedication she has shown in her time as Chair. Since taking up the position in June 2016, Julia has been a valued and guiding influence on The Jockey Club’s stewardship of The Derby. In that time she has seen the race’s published value rise to £1.5 million ensuring it remains the richest in the UK, as well as strengthening the ties between this racecourse and the community in which it sits. Julia’s tenure as chair has also seen a race which was first run in 1780, and which has

THE QUEEN AND EPSOM DOWNS 32
The 2022 Cazoo Derby forms part of the official Platinum Jubilee celebrations, marking 70 years since Her Majesty ascended to the throne on February 6th 1952.
It was two decades later, appropriately the Silver Jubilee year of 1977, that Her Majesty enjoyed her second Oaks success. Dunfermline, a filly bred by The Queen’s Royal Studs at Sandringham and trained by Dick Hern, prevailed by three quarters of a length from Freeze The Secret, with The Queen watching on television due to official duties.
The Queen’s longevity as a racehorse owner and her support for Epsom Downs Racecourse is unrivalled. Until the COVID-19 pandemic she had only missed attending Derby Day twice – in 1956 when on a state visit to Sweden, and in 1984 when attending the 40th anniversary of D-Day commemoration in France.
The filly went on to confirm her brilliance when beating Alleged in the final British Classic of the season, the St Leger, at Doncaster. It was 30 years after Church Parade finished fifth in the 1981 Derby that Her Majesty had her next Derby runner and 10th in all in 2011. The newly-married Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry were among family members who travelled to Epsom Downs to support Her Majesty and Carlton House.
Her Majesty’s involvement as a racehorse owner began in 1949 and spans nine decades, featuring many highlights at Epsom Downs, including two victories in the Group One fillies’ Classic, The Oaks. Her golden era as a racehorse owner was in the 1950s. Just four days after her Coronation, the monarch was at the sun-drenched Epsom Downs on June 6th 1953 with a reported crowd of more than 500,000 people present to witness her first Derby runner, Aureole.
The Street Cry colt was sent off the 5-2 favourite on the back of an impressive Dante Stakes victory at York. There was huge media interest, but there was to be no fairytale result. Carlton House, ridden by Ryan Moore and trained by Sir Michael Stoute, lost a shoe and finished third, a length behind the successful French raider Pour Moi.
Sent off at odds of 9-1 for trainer Sir Cecil Boyd-Rochfort and jockey Harry Carr following the colt’s Lingfield Derby Trial victory, Aureole finished four lengths second to Pinza – the closest Her Majesty has come to winning the world’s most famous Flat race.
The Queen also went close to further Oaks glory in 2001, when her homebred Flight Of Fancy finished second, one and a quarter lengths adrift of the winner Imagine.
The Queen experienced her first major victory at the historic course the following year. Aureole, bred by The Queen’s father King George VI, returned to Epsom Downs 12 months after finishing second in The Derby to win the Coronation Cup easily as a four-year-old.
Her Majesty was champion owner in both 1954 and 1957. She has enjoyed success in the other two British Classics, the 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas over a mile at Newmarket, thanks to Pall Mall (1958) and Highclere (1974) respectively. The Queen takes great joy in spending time with her horses, at the Royal Studs and at their training yards, to which she has been a frequent visitor. Her horses are foaled at Sandringham, and go as yearlings to Polhampton Stud near Newbury before joining one of her trainers.
Aureole also won the 1954 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot and went on to be champion sire in 1960 and 1961, with his best progeny including the 1960 Derby winner St Paddy. It was in 1957 that Her Majesty first enjoyed Classic success in The Oaks, thanks to Carrozza, who was leased to her by The National Stud.
A patron of both The Jockey Club and the Thoroughbred Breeders’ Association, The Queen also received two of the most prestigious awards in racing, taking the Cartier Millennium Award of Merit in 2000, and the Sir Peter O’Sullevan Charitable Trust Award in 2002.
Her Majesty was accompanied to Epsom Downs by HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother and HRH Princess Margaret and they cheered home the Noel Murless-trained Carrozza, who started at 100-8 and held off Silken Glider by a short-head under a youthful Lester Piggott, who kicked on two furlongs out.
The Queen’s involvement in the equine world stretches far beyond racing. As well as thoroughbreds, she has bred Highland ponies, Cleveland Bays, polo ponies and sports horses – including Doublet, who carried her daughter Princess Anne to victory in the 1971 European Eventing Championships.
Amid huge cheering, Her Majesty led her three year old filly into the famous winner’s enclosure at Epsom Downs and she has been a regular visitor to the racecourse ever since.

1828 There have been two dead-heats in Derby history. In 1828 Cadland and The Colonel could not be separated so took part in a ‘run-off’ later that afternoon, which the former won. In 1884 St Gatien and Harvester were jointly awarded the race, the only time in Derby history this has happened.
Four fillies were successful in both the Cazoo Derby and the Cazoo Oaks Eleanor (1801), Blink Bonny (1857), Signorinetta (1908) and Fifinella (1916).
1995 The Derby was permanently switched from Wednesday to Saturday in 1995. In its history the race has been run on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday, and usually takes place on the first Saturday in June.
JUST NINE DAYS AFTER THE OPENING OF NINE ELMS STATION, SPECIAL TRAINS RAN TO EPSOM CARRYING MORE THAN 5,000 PEOPLE FOR THE DERBY. THE RACE WAS WON BY 30/1 OUTSIDER AMATO.

QUEEN’S JOCKEYS TO CELEBRATE PLATINUM JUBILEE IN ROYAL SILKS The Queen’s colours on, especially at Epsom, a jockey would grow six inches. It makes you feel important when you put those colours on. The Queen is the most famous woman in the whole wide world, so you’re privileged.
Forty retired and current jockeys to have ridden for The Queen will this afternoon pay a special tribute to Her Majesty’s contribution to horseracing, gathering at the world famous Epsom Downs Racecourse dressed in the monarch’s purple and gold silks.
“She’s the patron of racing. Without her we would be a little bit lost, because her patronage is a very valuable thing.
The jockeys will include 79 year old four-time Derby winner Willie Carson and John Reid, who won The Derby in 1992. Current riders joining the line-up include Frankie Dettori and Ryan Moore, both of whom have won The Derby twice, and another of The Queen’s regular jockeys, Hayley Turner.
“It’s not just the horseracing she enjoys - she enjoys the breeding side of it. She likes to know from trainers how the horse is behaving and its attitude, its temperament. She wants to know those things. That’s what she’s really interested in. The winning post is the end result and she enjoys that, of course, but she enjoys everything before you get to the winning post. That gives her the most pleasure.”
The Derby remains the only one of the five ‘Classics’ Her Majesty is yet to win as a racehorse owner, despite having finished second with Aureole in 1953 just four days after her Coronation and third in 2011 with Carlton House, who was her 10th and most recent runner in the race.
John Reid, who first rode for The Queen while still an apprentice jockey and went on to ride dozens of times in her famous silks, added: “It’ll be pretty special. It’s something I’m looking forward to.
To recognise Her Majesty’s contribution to horseracing and her long association with The Derby – which includes missing just two Derby days between her 1953 Coronation and the start of the Coronavirus pandemic - The Queen’s Stand at Epsom Downs Racecourse has also been renamed this week as The Queen Elizabeth II Stand.
“We got to know each other quite well over the years, and met at many different functions. It was a great pleasure to me. For anyone who puts those colours on, it’s special. I guarantee that every jockey who has had them on, the first time they make sure they have a photograph taken, just in case they never ride for her again.”
Willie Carson, who won The Oaks on Dunfermline for The Queen at Epsom Downs in her Silver Jubilee year in 1977, said: “When you put 39

THE AGA KHAN STUDS CELEBRATES ITS CENTENARY It has become something of a tradition over the last 200 years or so for the Aga Khan, the head of the Nizari Isma’ilism branch of the Islamic faith, to take a rich interest in sport and in particular horses. The very first Aga Khan (1804-1881) was said to have owned some of the world’s finest Arabian horses, which were then inherited by his son, the second Aga Khan. This interest would inevitably move towards thoroughbreds and His Highness the Aga Khan III – the grandfather of the current Aga Khan IV – was one of the most successful owners of his time in the first half of the 20th Century. The Aga Khan Studs which he established celebrates its centenary this year.
42
He owned no fewer than 16 Classic winners during his lifetime, with five of those coming in The Derby itself between 1930 and 1948. The first of his five winners was the Dick Dawsontrained Blenheim, who was a one length victor of the 1930 Derby under Harry Wragg. Blenheim was the lesser fancied of the two Aga Khan runners but snatched victory in the final strides, leading to Wragg describing Blenheim as having won in “the most gentlemanly manner”. And the achievement of winning at Epsom Downs was not lost on the Aga Khan himself, who said: “I can hardly believe it to be true, it all seems like a dream. It is impossible to say how glad I am to have won the greatest race in the world.
“The Derby is the most ticklish of all races. The course is critical, the temperament and even the mood of the animal is critical. I know of no more searching test for a horse than to run in the Derby.” Further success would follow in the 1935 Derby, when Bahram would become his first ever homebred winner of The Derby, having been sent off as a 5-4 favourite for trainer Frank Butters. He was described by the Press as having “the hopes and bets of half of Britain” and he did not disappoint, eventually going on to become the only 20th Century horse to win the English Triple Crown and remain unbeaten. Three more winners would follow for the Aga Khan III in Mahmoud (1936), My Love (1948) and Tulyar (1952) and he would play another key role in the history of British horseracing, gifting Her Majesty The Queen her first racehorse as a wedding present. That filly was a foal named Astrakhan, who was a grand-daughter of Derby winner Bahram and went on to give The Queen her first winner on the Flat, at Hurst Park in 1950. Upon his death in 1957, the third Aga Khan was succeeded by his grandson Aga Khan IV. Much like his grandfather before him, he has a rich interest in the equestrian world and horseracing and it is something he still enjoys to this day alongside his daughter, Princess Zahra Aga Khan. A key player in both the racing and breeding worlds in modern times, the Aga Khan IV has proven to be just as successful in The Derby as his grandfather, equalling his five victories. The first of those victories remains perhaps the most famous Derby winner of them all as it came in 1981 with Shergar, who still holds the record for the largest winning margin courtesy of his 10-length victory.
Paying tribute to his grandfather, he said after the race: “In many ways, the Derby vindicates my decision to continue in racing. There is the joy and happiness of winning and there is the continuing of a family tradition.” The green silks with red epaulettes and a green cap of the Aga Khan became known around the world and he would win The Derby twice more in the 1980s, with the Sir Michael Stoute-trained Shahrastani in 1986 and the Luca Cumani-trained Kahyasi in 1988. More Derby history would be made with Sinndar, who became the first winner of the premier Classic in the new Millennium for John Oxx and Johnny Murtagh, while the Aga Khan would go on to match his grandfather’s tally of five winners when winning the 2016 renewal with the Dermot Weld-trained Harzand. He also has a close relationship with Her Majesty The Queen, gifting her a horse as an 80th birthday present in 2006. That horse was called Estimate, who ensured that Her Majesty would become the first reigning monarch to win the Gold Cup at Royal Ascot in its 207-year history, when gamely defeating Simenon by a neck in 2013. Owning breeding operations in both Ireland and France, the Aga Khan has continued the legacy of his grandfather’s love of the sport with great commitment, building an operation which will be enjoyed for many years to come.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
FINE WINE landed the spoils in convincing style at York last time and it would be no surprise to see the five-year-old continue his ascendancy in this contest. The Scott Dixon-trained gelding may be able to defy a 9lb rise and he gets the tentative vote off a career-high mark. Live In The Dream arrives in a rich vein of form and could continue to progress with Sean Kirrane taking 3lb off his back. Mokaatil succeeded in this contest last year and demands consideration.

Camelot
DERBY ANNIVERSARIES IN 2022 10 YEARS AGO (2012) – Camelot became the 37th horse to follow up victory in the first British Classic, the 2000 Guineas, with success in The Derby. Jockey and trainer Joseph and Aidan O’Brien were also the first father/ son combination to win the premier Classic. Camelot narrowly failed in his bid to achieve the Triple Crown, finishing second behind Encke in the St Leger at Doncaster three and a half months later. 20 YEARS AGO (2002) – High Chapparal handed both trainer Aidan O’Brien and jockey Johnny Murtagh a second Derby success as he saw off his stablemate and 9-4 Favourite Hawk Wing by two lengths. One of the best Derby winners this century, High Chapparal went on to enjoy four further Group One contests – the Irish Derby, the Irish Champion Stakes and two renewals of the Breeders’ Cup Turf. 30 YEARS AGO (1992) – Ridden by John Reid, Dr Devious became the first horse to win The Derby after contesting the Kentucky Derby, in which he had finished seventh to Lil E Tee. The new grandstand, the Queen’s Stand, was opened by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.
Golden Fleece 40 YEARS AGO (1982) – Legendary trainer Vincent O’Brien celebrated his sixth and final Derby winner when Golden Fleece crossed the winning line with Pat Eddery on board. Still at the rear of the field rounding Tattenham Corner, Golden Fleece demonstrated an electric turn of foot as he powered down the outside to win by three lengths. 50 YEARS AGO (1972) – Roberto triumphed in one of the most exciting Derby finishes, with Lester Piggott, who replaced Bill Williamson in the saddle in somewhat controversial circumstances, driving the colt to lead on the line from Rheingold. The placings remained unaltered after a long stewards’ enquiry.

THE ROAD TO
THE CAZOO DERBY
NAHANNI The Cazoo Blue Riband Trial Epsom Downs Tuesday 19th April
WESTOVER The bet365 Classic Trial Sandown Park Friday 22nd April
Unraced as a two-year-old, Nahanni posted a solid effort when runner-up at Kempton Park in January. He opened his account the following month back there before showing he was equally impressive on turf when winning a Leicester novice by a whopping nine lengths under a penalty. The son of the mighty Frankel was well supported for our Cazoo Blue Riband Trial three weeks later and he rewarded supporters with a game success. With the knowledge that he already has course winning form and has won over today’s trip, he could well prove a lively challenger.
Brought along steadily last year by his dual-Oaks winning trainer Ralph Beckett, Westover won on debut at Sandown Park before finishing runner-up on his final two starts – the latter a narrow defeat in a Pontefract Listed contest. Bred by his owners by their super-stallion Frankel, the colt clearly flourished over the winter. He showed his battling qualities to hold off the persistent challenge of the runner-up Cash in Sandown Park’s Group 3 Trial, prevailing by a short-head. He is untried over the Cazoo Derby trip, so that must be taken on trust, but he has plenty of size about him and still showed signs of greenness, so could well have lots more to offer.
CHANGINGOFTHEGUARD The Boodles Chester Vase Stakes Chester Wednesday 4th May
DESERT CROWN The Al Basti Equiworld Dubai Dante Stakes York Thursday 12th May
Beaten in three starts as a juvenile, Changingoftheguard opened his account in emphatic style on reappearance in a Dundalk Maiden in April. Despite the step up in class to Chester’s Group 3 trial, the Coolmore charge produced another decisive performance to defeat the unbeaten odds-on favourite New London by six and a half lengths. This son of stallion royalty Galileo is practically guaranteed to be suited to the Cazoo Derby’s mile and a half trip and perhaps his name is an omen today as we celebrate Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee.
54
Desert Crown didn’t set foot on a racecourse until the final week of the 2021 season but what a debut it was – easily dispatching a competitive field in a Nottingham Maiden. There was plenty of buzz around his reappearance in York’s Dante Stakes, historically a good pointer to the Cazoo Derby. Once again, he oozed class as he put his seven rivals to the sword, winning by three and a quarter lengths from the Group 2 winning Royal Patronage. With only two runs under his belt, one could argue that we haven’t seen the best of him yet and he looks to hold very strong claims today.

LONGEST TRAVELLERS: STONE AGE, STAR OF INDIA & CHANGINGOFTHEGUARD trained by Aidan O’brien, Ireland. PIZ BADILE trained by Donnacha O’Brien, Ireland. GLORY DAZE trained by A Oliver, Ireland.
DESERT CROWN cemented his position at the head of the ante-post market when striding clear with purpose to land the Dante at York, a route his trainer has used with subsequent Derby winners in the past, and the son of Nathaniel has reportedly improved since that outing. Stone Age didn't win as a juvenile, but he produced some solid efforts in defeat and has clearly stepped forward this year with an impressive display at Leopardstown last month. Others for the shortlist include Nations Pride, Piz Badile and Changingoftheguard.
WIN: DESERT CROWN

1872 The Derby course at Epsom Downs is in the rough shape of a horseshoe. From the start, 360ft above sea level, there is a slight right-handed bend and a rise of some 134ft sweeping left until the top of the hill. A left-hand descent of 34ft around Tattenham Corner leads into the cambered straight where there is a 50ft drop until half a furlong out where the ground level rises by 10ft. The present course, with the start moved to the hill opposite the grandstands, was used for the first time in 1872.
DID YOU KNOW?
Tagalie was a rare grey Derby winner. Only four of that hue have prevailed, the others being Gustavus (1821), Mahmoud (1936) and Airborne (1946). The latest grey to come close to victory was Silver Patriarch, a short-head runner-up to Benny The Dip in 1997, while Terimon was second in 1989.
1862 John Parsons rode Caractacus to win The Derby in 1862 as a 16 year old. To this day he remains the youngest jockey to win the race.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
Midnights Legacy is just 3lb higher than when comfortably winning this race 12 months ago and he must enter calculations, while Winter Reprise warrants respect following a short-neck defeat at Saint-Cloud. Mascat, Arenas Del Tiempo and Soapy Stevens are others to watch out for, but a chance is taken on SOLENT GATEWAY. The four-year-old might be best forgiven a tame effort in the Chester Cup last month, when too free, given his encouraging record at this venue. The booking of top apprentice Harry Davies is also a big plus.
WIN: SOLENT GATEWAY

DID YOU KNOW? The first American-bred Derby winner was Iroquois, owned by tobacco-millionaire Pierre Lorillard. Bred in Philadelphia, the colt was accompanied to England as a yearling by his American trainer Jacob Pincus and took the 1881 Derby under Fred Archer.
2012
Aidan and Joseph O’Brien became the first father-son combination to win The Derby when Camelot won in 2012 with a 19 year old Joseph on board. The pair repeated the feat in 2014 with Australia.
DID YOU KNOW? The largest Derby field was 34 in 1862, and the smallest just four in 1794. There is now a safety limit of 20 for the Cazoo Derby.
1927
THE BBC BROADCAST THE FIRST EVER RADIO COMMENTARY OF THE DERBY IN 1927 WITH THE HELP OF SOME NIFTY-LOOKING MICROPHONES. THE RACE ITSELF WAS WON BY FAVOURITE CALL BOY, RIDDEN BY CHARLIE ELLIOTT.

EPSOM RACE SUMMARY
In a wide-open event marginal preference is for COMMANCHE FALLS, who arrives here just 2lb higher than when winning the Stewards' Cup last year. The five-year-old confirmed his well-being when a close second on his seasonal return at Doncaster in April and that form gives him a big chance. Night On Earth is more than capable of going well in a race of this nature if seeing out the trip. Nelson Gay's recent effort over 5f here was very encouraging, while Regional and Bergerac are others to note.
