Ah, summer—I love it! It’s a season that can be really busy but still have a relaxed feel to it. Don’t know how that works, but it’s part of what makes summer special for me.
I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that the holidays are here—the stores have had Christmas stuff last six or eight weeks!
This year summer held two BIG events for me. By the time this issue is out for distribution, my younger son Lucas will have graduated from (yikes!) COLLEGE! Don’t ask me how that’s possible because I’m sure he was a toddler just a few months ago. I’m so, so proud of him and how well he’s done at a challenging school. It will be exciting to see where he goes next in life!
I’m trying not to be a crazy grandma, but I’m sure all you other grandmothers understand how overbuy for my Nixon. They make too much cute stuff! He’s grown so much that I’m truly treasuring

Focused on Quality
Written by Melissa McCance | Photos by Synergy in Motion
Many people are paying more attention to what goes into their food and where it comes from. One effect of this is consumers preferring to buy directly from food producers by shopping at farmers markets and smaller-scale farms. Jennifer Lewis, co-owner of Pleasant View Beef in Jonesville, is proud to carry on a family tradition of producing quality food that has lasted for decades.
The Lewis family has been in the area since 1941 and the farm became a full-on dairy farm in 1957 When milk prices dipped in 2015, it began a decline that lasted seven years At that time, they had 20 employees and were up against the same financial challenges that so many smaller dairy farmers faced. Needing to increase income, they asked themselves, “What are we already doing that we do really well?”
The answer was raising cattle.
They started offering cuts of beef in April 2018 and in the first year sold approximately 1200 pounds of meat. In 2019, they began advertising and word of mouth also contributed to making people aware that high quality beef was available at Pleasant View Then came 2020, and, as we all know, it got harder and harder to find beef in the stores.
beef is really good! In the past, lves and quarters. I knew that at much at once just wasn’t a lot of people but thought they ividual cuts,” explains Jennifer.
“At one point in time, we had 80 individual orders for different quantities of beef We’d tell people that we’d take the order and as soon as we get the steer picked up, we’d fill the order and let them know Every one of those 80 orders was picked up we weren’t left holding the bag on any of it ” says Jennifer
Both Jennifer and Kayla are very active in activities supporting agriculture Jennifer is on the state board of the Michigan Farm Bureau where she represents five counties in south central Michigan. Kayla is president of the Farm Bureau for Hillsdale County The Farm Bureau is the largest agriculture organization in the country
Pleasant View Beef is a family venture in every way Jennifer’s son-in-law is a builder who built the current store and his wife Brittany Morse helps with special events at the business Another daughter-in-law, Kelsey, assists with marketing the business They have also cultivated great working relationships with local suppliers like AG Solutions, Grant Reiff/Dairyland Seeds, and Kaeb Sales that have made the whole process more successful.
How the steers are raised and how the beef is handled constitute a major reason why Pleasant View beef gets such rave reviews from their customers Kayla Lewis, Jennifer’s daughter-in-law, explains that consistency is the key “They get the same feed which is some grass from pasture access along with corn silage. And, because we raise what goes into the silage, we know exactly what our steers are eating.”
When the steers are processed, the beef goes through a dry aging process before it’s cut This process is well-known in the food world to improve flavor The Taste of Home website explains it this way:
As the meat loses water, its flavor becomes concentrated to give it a more beef-forward finish The time in the aging room also breaks down collagen the connective tissues that holds together the beef’s muscle fibers so these steaks are more tender than fresh steaks
Small town people know the benefits of personalized service from local merchants, and that holds true at Pleasant View. They are happy to work with customers, put a high priority on service, and work to learn their customers’ names and make them feel valued If you’re interested in a package, you can set a budget and they will put together a bundle that meets your needs while staying within the cost limits
The store had several locations on the farm, but it soon became clear that it needed a dedicated space In 2021, an attractive store was built to welcome customers and display the many quality products offered at Pleasant View Beef. Besides a wide variety of beef cuts, the store has pork and chicken, cheese, specialty beef products like summer sausage and jerky, and gifts They can put together a gift basket for any occasion and price point as well. Their goal is to make the customer happy and bring people back.
Pleasant View Beef is located at 4840 N Sand Lake Road in Jonesville, just south of U S 12 You can get more information from their website: www pleasantviewbeef com and their Facebook page. The phone number is 517-8692300 or email beef@pvdairy.net. Also, be sure to look for them at the Hillsdale Farmers Market!
Happily, business has been gaining steadily since its start in 2018.

LET'S TALK TOOTSIES T I P S F O R S U M M E R T I M E F O O T C A R E 22 | SimplyHers.net
1. Ice Foot
Soaks
After a particularly hot day, your feet may be swollen or sore Just as you would soak your hands in cold water if your rings are stuck, your feet can benefit from cold soaks as well. Soak your feet in a bowl of ice water for 5-10 minutes and they’ll soon feel refreshed and back to their normal size Pat dry with a towel and then moisturize to keep them soft and supple.
2. Avoid Going
Barefoot
Unless you are at home, always wear shoes while out and about. Your feet can get dirty, picking up all sorts of germs or fungal infections, not to mention they could burn on the hot ground in the peak of summer
3. Get Some Water
Shoes
If you take part in lots of outdoor activities that are water based, like canoeing, kayaking, fishing or snorkeling, invest in a pair of water shoes. These will help protect your feet while exposed to sand and rocky surfaces, and they’ll also give you better stability and grip on uneven or slippery surfaces.
4. Apply Sunscreen
When you put your sunscreen on, don’t forget your feet! You protect your face, neck, legs, arms and body, so don’t stop at your feet. They need just as much sun protection as the rest of your body, and often in summer they are one of the most exposed areas of your body.
5. Exfoliate
Use a pumice stone or foot file to scrub any rough patches of skin on the soles of your feet During summer, open shoes are usually the order of the day due to the hot weather, but this can leave your feet exposed and more susceptible to hardening skin. The most affected areas to concentrate on are your heels, sides and the underside of your big toe.
6. Moisturize
After exfoliating, hop in the shower and wash your feet Once out the shower, moisturize your feet and your soles to help your skin absorb more moisture and seal it in. This will protect your feet from becoming rough or cracked again. You may have to repeat this process over a few days if your feet are suffering As a preventative measure, we recommend doing this daily to help protect your feet long term.
7. Don
’t
Live In
Flip-Flops
When it’s ridiculously hot outside, it’s almost inconceivable that you’d wear anything else on your feet besides flip-flops and sandals. But wearing things all day every day is not going to help your feet Backless shoes and sandals leave your heels and sides of your feet exposed to the harsh summer elements. Balance your time with closed and more supportive and protective shoes.

Much like a diet that includes foods from each of the major food groups can provide the balance of nutrients and vitamins bodies need to achieve optimal health, a workout routine that includes an assortment of strength and cardiovascular exercises is the recipe for a fit and healthy body.
Core exercises can help individuals build sculpted abdominal muscles, and while that’s a goal for many core devotees, the benefits of core exercises extend well beyond the cosmetic.
· Build a strong, healthy back: The International Association for the Study of Pain reports that lower back pain has been the leading cause of years lived with disability across the globe since 1990. Lower back pain can be debilitating, but core exercises strengthen muscles in the core, including those in the back. The Mayo Clinic notes that core exercises train muscles in the pelvis, lower back, hips, and abdomen to work together, creating greater balance and stability and contributing to a healthy back.
· Make daily life easier: Individuals may not realize it, but their cores play a vital role in performing a great number of daily tasks. Core muscles are activated when doing everything from taking out the trash to getting dressed. If those muscles are weak, the cumulative effect
of that weakness can add up and contribute to aches, pains, and other health problems. Strong core muscles make daily tasks easier and less taxing on the body, providing both short- and long-term benefits.
· Become a better athlete: Core training has long been a key component of professional athletes’ exercise regimens, and it’s just as beneficial for amateur athletes as well. The Harvard Medical School notes that a strong core powers a host of athletic activities, including golf, tennis, cycling, running, swimming, and team sports like baseball and volleyball. A strong core also benefits outdoor enthusiasts who love to kayak and hike difficult terrain.
· Sculpt abdominals: The cosmetic benefits of building a strong core should not be overlooked, as individuals might gain additional motivation to keep exercising and eating right when they see desirable results in the mirror. Core exercises strengthen and sculpt abdominal muscles, creating a win-win situation for anyone who wants to get healthy and look good doing it.
Core exercises are a vital component of a wellrounded workout. With a little dedication to improving your core, you will begin to see the amazing benefits.

Hobby Farming
Hobby farming is one of those activities that varies from person to person and farm to farm. At the basic root of hobby farming, the definition is its name. Hobby farming is when you start to farm in your free time, dedicating time and effort towards agriculture simply because of your passion, not for the money.
Hobby farming is a small-scale farm that is more for pleasure than business. It doesn’t have to be a full-time venture. People who hobby farm can have day jobs and other focuses in their lives rather than dedicating all their time to the farming lifestyle.
Hobby farmers can range from having chickens to produce and sell eggs to growing vegetables for their meals and dinner preparation to selling crops to the local community. The idea of hobby farming is not only to follow a passion but also reap some of the benefits that it might produce.
To decide if you want to start hobby farming, it’s important to look at the pros and cons. There are many benefits to starting a hobby farm, like:
It’s healthful – Depending on what you’re farming, you and your family might have fresh and organic products available right from your property.
It can be therapeutic – Farming can be a stress reliever and a nice break from your daily life, especially if you have another job or aspect of your life that makes you stressed.
It’s practical – No matter what you’re choosing to do with your farm, you’re going to become self-sustaining in some way.
However, it’s not always going to be beneficial. There are a few downsides to deciding to hobby farm like:
Hobby farms aren’t going to provide money – Although you might be able to get some extra cash,
there is no way for it to be sustainable on its own. Plus, the IRS doesn’t provide tax breaks for hobby farmers.
They require a lot of work – Again, depending on what you want to do with your farm, no matter what, you’re going to be dedicating time and money. These farms can quickly grow, and hobby farmers can find themselves in over their heads.
You will have more responsibility – Think about how much downtime you’re going to be giving up for this project, and how you might be taking care of animals and crops. Year-round farms require maintenance in every season.
Keep in mind is that it takes a while to adjust to being a farmer. Discovering what works best for you might take extra time. Be patient and start slowly. When it comes to hobby farming, it’s going to be what you make it.

Oral Health
Many people are unaware of the importance of oral health. Oral health is very closely related to our overall health and well-being. The term oral health refers to the health of the teeth, gums, tongue, throat, and bones that make up these structures. These areas are responsible for our smile, speech, and chewing.
Routine oral health care can often get neglected. Ways to maintain good oral health start with brushing teeth twice daily with fluoride toothpaste. Flossing and using mouthwash after brushing is also helpful. Avoiding tobacco use, alcohol, and sugary foods and beverages are also very important. Drinking fluoridated water helps to protect the teeth from decay. And, of course, seeing a dentist routinely at least once a year for preventative care will help one to be proactive in maintaining good oral hygiene and identify any issues before they become more troublesome.
Not following good oral hygiene measures can lead to poor oral health. Indicators of poor oral health include having a toothache, gums that bleed, or even bad breath. Some of the most common problems we see from poor oral hygiene are tooth decay, gum and periodontal disease, and oral cancer. When these problems develop, they
can lead to more severe effects on our overall health.
Poor oral health can lead to more serious problems in the body. Respiratory infections can result from this. Diabetics especially are at increased risk for oral health problems that can lead to a more systemic infection. Bacteria from the mouth can actually get into the bloodstream and cause infection and inflammation in the body. Heart disease has been linked to this process as well. Plaque can build up in the arteries and harden due to this bacterial infection, putting one at risk for heart attack or stroke. Endocarditis, an infection in the lining of the heart, can also develop from an oral infection source. In addition, infertility and pregnancy complications have also been linked to poor oral health, as well as dementia.
The mouth assists in the first part of digestion and is responsible for speech and facial expressions. Having good oral health is crucial to our well-being and quality of life. Good oral hygiene habits need to be a part of our daily routine. Be sure to see your dentist if you develop any signs of an oral health issue to determine the cause and start treatment before more serious medical complications develop.

Women have suffered in silence long enough, it is time to get support.
Jordan DiMatteo, RN
FemiLift OurLittle Secret
Millions of women suffer from vaginal irregularities and structural changes due to age, childbirth and hormonal irregularities, uncomfortable to discuss their concerns. Alma Laser’s FemiLift offers an outpatient solution for a wide range of conditions such as vaginal atrophy, dryness, and minor incontinence.
FemiLift stimulates your body’s natural healing and produces new collagen and elastin, compounds that contribute to tissue resilience and strength. The laser delivers just the right wavelengths and perfect pulse to provide effective tissue remodeling without causing any damage to surrounding areas.
How FemiLift Can Help You
Changes in your vaginal tissue can result from the natural aging process. Events like childbirth and menopause, and receiving cancer treatments can also cause changes to your vagina. It’s common to experience vaginal laxity, dryness, and general atrophy as a result.
FemiLift proves an amazing solution to the following:
Stress Urinary Incontinence (SUI) - SUI is a term that describes involuntary leakage of urine during activities that increase pressure in the abdomen such as coughing, sneezing, laughing or exercise. This condition is caused by a loss of strength in the urethra due to a weakened pelvic support structure. FemiLift treats the entire area, supporting the urethra, increasing the thickness of the vaginal walls and strengthening the pelvic support structure. The treatment reduces the symptoms of SUI and effectively restores urinary continence.
Post - Delivery Changes - Childbirth, a momentous lifecycle event, involves many physiological changes to a woman’s body. Post-delivery, the vaginal area may feel stretched and dry and the pelvic floor may be weakened. FemiLift rehabilitates the entire vaginal area by strengthening and toning vaginal tissue, and restoring its strength and flexibility.
Post – Menopause Irregularities - The shift in hormones that occurs with menopause can cause the lining of the vagina to become thinner, drier, less elastic and inflamed. FemiLift rejuvenates the vaginal lining, increasing the thickness of the vaginal walls and restoring lubrication.
Vaginal Dryness & Recurring Infections - FemiLift helps women suffering from dryness and recurring vaginal infections by rejuvenating their vaginal lining and restoring lubrication. The treatment increases the vaginal immune system responses and blood flow, generates new healthy tissue with higher immune resistance to infections and allows the vagina to naturally maintain normal PH levels.
Following treatment, there’s no need for downtime and you can even resume sexual relations in three days. Three sessions are recommended for optimal results.

HYDRATION is Key in Summer Heat
Summer is a season to enjoy some fun in the sun, but it’s imperative that people remember to take steps to reduce their risk for heat illness. Those measures should include efforts to hydrate and remain hydrated throughout the day.
There is no standard for how much plain water adults and children should drink daily, though there are general recommendations for both women and men. Here’s one rule of thumb: divide your body weight in pounds by two and drink that number of ounces each day. Regardless, drinking water should be a part of your daily routine, not something you have to go out of your way to do
Approximately 80 percent of our water intake comes from drinking water. The other 20 percent comes from food. All whole fruits and vegetables contain some water, but snack on these for maximum benefit: cucumbers, celery, tomatoes, radishes, peppers, cauliflower, watermelon, spinach, strawberries, broccoli, and grapefruit They all contain 90 percent water or higher.
Tricky fact some liquids work against hydration! Drinks like coffee, sugary sodas, beer, wine, hard liquor, lemonade, sweet tea, energy drinks, smoothies, and flavored milk are all culprits. They are loaded with sugar, sodium, and other ingredients that remove water from your tissues. Consider swapping some of these out daily or rehydrating with more water for each dehydrating drink you consume.
A good measurement of hydration is the color of your urine. Pale urine, similar to the color of straw, indicates proper hydration while darker urine is a sign that you need more water. A dark yellow or amber color means you may have mild to severe dehydration Of course, some medications and health conditions could affect this. If you ’ re concerned about the color of your urine, consult with your health provider.

Life is the Berries
Broken Better
Kintsugi is the Japanese art of taking a shattered, broken bowl and repairing it with lacquer dusted with gold or silver. Artists embrace the damage. Piece by piece, the artisans painstakingly put the pottery back together, lining the cracks in gold or silver. It’s stronger. It’s more beautiful. It’s a metaphor for humans.
We break. We shatter. We fall apart.
But our struggle can become our strength. Our brokenness becomes our beauty when God restores us. God is our potter. He can repair our deepest of hurts if we allow it. Our pain does not need to go to waste. No. We can break together for a purpose of higher value.
Life broke me for a season.
My crawling out of the pit—long and laborious. God methodically put the pieces back in place. I reminded myself to breathe, just breathe. Breath in Jesus. Exhale stress. I devoured the Word of God for inspiration. The Bible is how God comforts me, eyes swollen, tears flowing, in the darkest night.
A paraphrase of a powerful Bible verse reads, “Everything’s falling apart on me, God; put me together again with your Word,” (Psalm 119:107 The Message). This explains how God gave me HIS strength to arrange me back together. Reading truths in the Bible, I clung to biblical encouragement, and it equipped me with grit.
I am stronger for it.
You and I can allow God to work mightily in our crushing seasons.
Let’s not waste our pain. Don’t sweep up the pieces, throwing them in the trash.
We can build back, drawing power from God. When we fail, we can fail forward, learning from the experience. You and I can become rock solid and fortified to hold together. God grows us in our process of restoration.
When we crack, we can be recreated to nearly unbreakable, unstoppable, undefeatable. Our trials can transform us. God can refurbish us to a more beautiful masterpiece. Let God restore like never before.
You and I can be broken better than ever.

Swing into the Story of Swung Vases
I do not know much about collectible glass but doing a part-time gig at an antique mall has been an education and has expanded my knowledge on a variety of things. Sure, I know some stuff about usable “kitcheny” glassware like Pyrex, Corning Ware, Fire King, and Hazel Atlas, but as far as art glass goes – it has not been in my wheelhouse.
One of the styles of art glass I have become more familiar with are swung vases. Swung vases are typically tall, slender pieces of glass with ruffled “mouth” openings at the top. They come in a variety of colors like amber, orange, bittersweet, gold, lilac, green, and blue. Some vases come with uranium in the glass so that they will glow under a blacklight. As a teenager, I actually had a swung vase, but I never knew what it was called. It was tall and orange and I kept peacock feathers in it. Come on! It was the seventies!
Swung glass is a style of glass blowing with a distinctive shape and technique. Made in the 1960s through the 1980s and mainly in the United States, swung glass is pressed into a mold, then, while slightly cool, picked up by the “neck” and “swung” in a pendulum motion to elongate and then stylize the “mouth” of the vase, making each a unique and one-of-a-kind
piece. The vases can stand two to three feet tall and have the appearance of “melting” at the “mouth” of the vase. Value is sometimes based on how many “fingers,” which are the ruffled curved pieces of the “mouth”. (I know, I know. This is starting to sound more like an anatomy lesson.)
In past articles, I have shared with you the collectibility of Green Stamps, blow molds, and Singer Featherweight sewing machines, and this just provides another example. Currently, swung vases are super popular and desired, so if grandma has one, please do not throw it out or store spaghetti pasta in it! Display it front and center and dazzle your friends with your newly-acquired knowledge about your very own swung vase.
Keeping It in Stitches and you in the art glass know.
[Side Note: Following my first draft of this article, while at a community yard sale I was able to purchase not one, but TWO swung vases! One in green and one in amber. Oh, oh, could be the start of my own collection!]

Book and Author Reviews
Summer has arrived! Time to take a vacation on the beach. Author Nancy Thayer’s latest, All the Days of Summer, is a book to take along. A woman in her mid-forties decides to end her loveless marriage. Little does she know how much her three-month summer beach cottage rental in Nantucket will help her decide her future. And will permanently change her life. I am looking forward to reading this fun author’s newest release!
next career step. When out on the town with his buddies, he meets a beautiful blonde and they hit it off right away. She introduces herself as Helen Grey, but he doesn’t know her real name is Stacy Rayland. Stacy is an LA detective working undercover to stop one of the largest drug shipments to reach Los Angeles. During the course of their budding relationship, he becomes involved in her undercover work to arrest the biggest drug lord on the island.

Sheri Lynne, a new local author from Jackson County, recently contacted me about her publications. Hawaiian Dreaming and Hawaiian Flames are the first two books in her trilogy. The stories are somewhat based on her deceased husband and his twin brother who both served in the military and had once hoped to open a restaurant in Hawaii.
Hawaiian Dreaming introduces us to twin Mike TreVaine who served in the Air Force, stationed on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. After leaving the military he stuck around, and now Mike and twin Mark own a popular restaurant on the island, the Hawaiian Lanai. They are noticing a suspicious shortage in their liquor inventory. Jenna Hathaway is in her final year of studying to be a Certified Public Accountant. They hire her to discover how these shortages are happening. Instant fireworks occur between her and Mike upon their meeting. As Jenna delves into their books, she uncovers more than she bargained for. Loan sharks and undercover cops become involved. Her relationship with Mike ends predictably!
Hawaiian Flames continues with older brother to the twins, Captain Peyton TreVaine. Peyton has spent ten years in special ops division in Afghanistan, with his last year in search and rescue. He is ready to leave all of that behind. He joins his brothers in Oahu and is deciding his
I assume her final book in the trilogy is the story of twin, Mark. However, never assume! Sheri Lynne’s two books are in local libraries. On her Facebook page, there are links to Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Dorrance Books. Happy reading!
Lastly, my husband Marty recently read a book he enjoyed, and I asked him to write the following review. The War Journal of Major Damon “Rocky” Gause; Firsthand Account of One of the Greatest Escapes of World War II is one of one of the most inspiring true-life escapes from enemy captivity in print. This account was undiscovered for 50 years in a footlocker and sent to his wife after his death. His son published it without change in 1999. It is truly a tale fitting of America’s Greatest Generation. The story is of a 3,000-mile voyage in a 20 foot wooden boat from the Bataan Peninsula to Australia. After the fall of the Philippines to Japanese forces in 1942, the Major and his partner, Lieutenant William Osborne, made the trek in 52 days. The story includes romance, shark attacks, a visit to the world’s largest leper colony, strafing by enemy aircraft, typhoons, food and water deprivation, and much more. Unbelievable, is all I can say.

Over The EDG E
Have you ever been scared so badly you knew you’d shaved years off your life only to find there was really nothing to be scared of after all? That very thing happened to me recently and it was enough to put me over the edge.
Dryer sheets seem to be a thing of the past and I know why. How many times did you find them stuck up your dress at a most inconvenient time. Yeah, I was done with dryer sheets so I bought some spongy little “magic” balls that were guaranteed to not only take the static out of my clothes, but they collected dog hair too. Magic balls! I loved the idea so I bought several. That was a mistake. Not only did those magic balls not work, they too got caught up in my clothes. At least they were easier to find … most of the time.
I washed some of my work clothes last week and used my new magic balls in the dryer. I was in a hurry though and didn’t count the balls after I pulled my clothes from the dryer. Little did I know that would soon be a big problem for me. I had to do a short presentation before the 200+ residents at the independent living facility where I work. I’m not comfortable speaking to crowds large or small. I have a tendency to get flustered and I knew I’d trip up the stairs or do something stupid.
I had to do it, though, so I got dressed and headed out the door. I felt a flutter in my pant leg as I walked, but figured it was just nerves. When I got to work, I used the bathroom quickly because when I’m nervous I pee. Good thing I did because I found one of those magic balls floating in my pant leg. I would have been
mortified had it fallen from my pants while I was on stage in front of all those people.
I got to the auditorium just as the director announced my name. I stepped on stage and started toward the podium. As I took that first step, I felt something start crawling down my leg. I froze! My first thought was what if a bug was in my pants crawling down my leg? I started stomping my foot and slapping my leg hoping to kill whatever was in there, but it just kept creeping down my leg! I was terrified!
I screamed at the top of my lungs and ran toward the podium. I frantically rubbed my leg against the podium trying to kill that creepy crawler in my pants, but it just would not die. In my thrashing I knocked the podium off the stage and because I was holding onto said podium at that moment, I went off the stage with it.
I was still screaming and crying that something was crawling down my pant leg and I needed help when one of the residents grabbed me while another reached his hand up my pant leg and pulled out … NO! Tell me it was not another magic ball. Holy Mother! How could that have happened? More importantly, how in the world could I ever face these people again, you know, once the laughter stopped? They apparently thought it was hilarious. How was I ever going to live this down? Stinkin’ magic balls in my pants! From this point forward I’d rather live with static cling than creeping balls. I’m telling you, this incident was enough to put me right over the edge.

Disputes About Property Lines
It’s summertime and we are all working in our yards mowing grass, planting flowers, cleaning up brush lines, and just enjoying the sun in our yards. In Michigan, the sun doesn’t always shine so we take advantage of it whenever we can.
It is always assumed we live in the “Happy Days” world where neighbors get along and everyone is happy, no matter what. However, that is not the reality of our world today. The mowing of grass, cleaning the brush lines and “enjoying your yards” can cause major issues between neighbors. Many times, one neighbor believes the property line is in one position and the other neighbor vehemently disagrees with that, thus, anger and frustrations ensue. At times, the Courts become involved with the property line disputes, sometimes criminal courts when things get physical (and it has happened), or the entrance of a personal protection order between neighbors.
When there are disputes about property lines or what you can or cannot do, it is always best to consult legal advice. But, in the meantime, if you believe the property lines are not as identified, it is truly best to get a survey completed; that way, there is absolutely no question on who owns what.
Another issue that is common is cutting brush lines or trees. Again, neighbors get mad because one neighbor may feel the other is intruding on their land to cut trees or the brush. In the legal sense of things, if the tree or brush is on your side of the property, you are generally allowed to cut only those things that fall on your side like branches and brush. Think of it as a straight line from the ground to the sky – those things that are on your side of the line you are allowed to cut, within reason, and if it falls on the other, you are not allowed to.
Now, there are always issues because trees can sometimes fall on both sides of the properties, to include their trunks. One person is not allowed to cut the tree down or cut the trunk so that it ruins the other neighbor’s use of the tree. Again, consult with an attorney if these things are occurring as the information here is just a rule of thumb and there are many things that can be used to amend them.
The best advice is to remain calm, don’t do things out of anger, and talk it over with the neighbor. Most of the time, things can be worked out peacefully.

Car Show
by Elyse Apel
Stillwell Ford, a car dealership located in Hillsdale, Michigan, is preparing to host its 7th Annual Car Show.
“Last year, we had over 500 show cars on the lot,” says Eric Hoffman, president of Stillwell Ford. “This year, we are expecting anywhere from 500 to 600 cars to participate.”
On September 9, from 9:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m., participants and spectators alike will be able to attend the car show for free. The show is held at Stillwell Ford on its car lot. Free coffee and doughnuts will be available in the morning, as well as three different local food vendors that will also be on site.
“Cottage Inn Pizza, Pub and Grub (serving tacos), and Butler Dogs will all be there,” Hoffman explains.
There will also be a 50/50 raffle, with the proceeds going to support the local non-profit Child Abuse and Prevention Awareness of Hillsdale County (CAPA).
“We just think they do such a great service for the community,” Hoffman says.
The show is open to all participants and car models.
“They can be any make and model,” Hoffman says. “In past years, we’ve had everything from drag cars to old-fashioned tow trucks and motorcycles. We often get a little bit of everything.”
While most of the cars that participate are antique, not all the vehicles are.
“There are also some more modern cars that are brought to the show, but the majority are classic cars,” Hoffman says.
The first car show was held in 2016 and was held to honor Stillwell Ford’s 50th anniversary.
This is the seventh annual car show but it’s the eighth year; one had to be canceled due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
“It started on our 50th anniversary and we just kept holding them because it was such a success,” Hoffman explains. “That first year, we thought we would get around 50 cars to participate, but we had over 200 show up.” Since then, the show has continued growing every year.
“When we started this, it was meant to be a way to give back to the community,” Hoffman says. “It has grown so much, we now empty our entire car lot. Every single car is gone.”
The dealership’s employees come together to help put on the car show and Hoffman says it wouldn’t be possible without them, but that the work of putting it on is all worth it to give back to the community.
“Everyone just loves coming together to see all the antique vehicles,” he says. “It’s been very well received by the community.”
Registration is not required for cars to participate in the show. However, you may register your show car at stillwellford.com and, if you sign up before August 18, you will get a dash plaque and t-shirt.

It is a town-wide festival for the community and others to gather and enjoy the day and camaraderie that comes with it. The event has been put on for approximately 50+ years, started originally by the local Lions Club. The “Miss Mess Contest” –men dressing as women and competing in a contest was an old time treat, back in the day. Outhouse racing is the highlight of the event, the first known outhouse was called the “Royal Flush” later to be replaced with the “Passing Gas Xpress.”
Over the years, many from the area donated their time to make this event happen, and volunteers are always welcome to join and help to make the next event even bigger and better for the future.

Pittsford Gas & Tire: the tradition continues
By Melissa McCance
One thing people who’ve never lived in small towns usually don’t understand is the tight sense of community and support that exists within them. This applies not only from neighbor to neighbor but also among the business owners and their customers. We come to rely on the extra level of service and personal attention offered by businesses that are owned and run by people we know. Pittsford Gas & Tire has been one of these businesses for decades, and new owners Ian and Amber Coleman plan to uphold the reputation it has enjoyed since its beginning.
Ian’s grandparents, Richard and Dorothy Varner, started the business as Pittsford Oil back in the first half of the 20th century. Chan Barrett, Ian’s uncle, took over from them, working there for 50 years and owning it for 46. Ian had mentioned to him several years ago that he’d be interested in taking over when Chan was ready to retire. “I don’t think he took me seriously back then,” laughs Ian, “but I meant it!” That time came at the end of 2022, and the Colemans assumed ownership of the business in January 2023.
“I wanted to preserve it as a family business,” explains Ian. “We wanted it to continue as locally-owned and part of the community.” Amber seconds his feelings that the good reputation of Pittsford Gas & Tire needed to be preserved, and they are united in their desire to keep it “business as usual.”
“I’ve had people ask if things are going to change, especially if we’d be discontinuing the full service at the gas pumps. We will not be changing that!” says Ian.
That’s right, you read that correctly: full service at the gas pumps, something that has disappeared from gas stations. If the weather’s bad, you can stay in your car and have the tank filled for you. If you or someone you know has mobility issues and getting in and out of the car is difficult, Pittsford Gas & Tire is the place to go to refuel! In addition to gas, they carry a full range of tires and batteries and also do oil changes.
Ian and Amber live in Pittsford and have two children who attend Hudson Area Schools in grades 4 and 6. Besides running the station, Ian works at The Coleman Foundation and has been a member of the Hillsdale County Fair Board for eight years. Amber is a reading intervention teacher for grades 4 and 5 with Coldwater Community Schools.
Pittsford Gas & Tire is located at 4536 S. 1st Street in Pittsford. Business hours are Monday through Saturday, 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. You can reach them by calling 517-523-2438 or via email at fullsvc@ pittsfordgastire.com. “We went through the application and selection process with the other cities that were also applying to host,” she says “We found out that we were awarded national championships in the winter ”
Angela says that Jubilee stood out uniquely in its application for a couple of reasons.
“Each city is allowed to put its stamp on the type of competition,” she says. “I think the members of the selection committee appreciated that in our proposal to host we agreed to hold the championship separate from our regular jubilee ”A few of the championship pilots are also signed up to participate in the jubilee, which will be held the weekend after the championship.
Angela says she thinks Jackson is a perfect fit for the championship. “The people of Jackson are exceptionally welcoming and hospitable. They understand the value of hot air ballooning as a family-friendly hobby for these pilots ”
She added that the Jubilee is excited to allow the pilots to experience what Michigan has to offer.
“Only one of the pilots is from Michigan; all of the other pilots are coming in from out of state, so we are very excited to have them come to visit the Midwest.”
This year will mark 40 years since a small group of pilots first started the Jubilee, which Angela says made being awarded the championship even more meaningful The Jubilee originally started small, with just six local pilots participating in those first few years.
“Every year they would just come together and all fly at the same time and over the years it has slowly grown, ” says Angela.
This year, the Jubilee festival will have 33 pilots participating and many events that are open to the public to attend
“We are excited for a regular Jubilee weekend,” Angela says. “On Friday and Saturday, Ella Sharp Park will open at 3 p.m. and will stay open until 10:30 p.m. for the public to come. There will be 13 different food vendors as well as other craft vendors.” There will also be familyfriendly activities for kids of all ages, including bouncy houses. The balloons will launch early each morning at 7:00 a m and the public is welcome to attend
“We always have a car show on Saturday where anybody can bring a car to show,” Angela explains, “but this year we are adding a Jeep show on Friday night.”
Angela says that neither the championship nor the Jubilee would be possible without the assistance of volunteers and that the Jubilee board is excited to bring the community together with both events
“We are looking forward to demonstrating to these competitors, and the community, the hospitality of Jackson, Michigan.”

Thoughts From the Cab of a Tractor
By Dakota Harding
Fast forward to another year with new thoughts from the cab of a tractor. Some days I still wish I were born one hundred years ago, and some days, I am thankful for autosteer … how else would I keep track of my thoughts and teach my daughter the ABCs?
I am heading across that “big field” and the sheep are scattered across the back in their new pasture. They are perfectly trimming those big willows—the ones I’d always wished were mine—as if they were prestigious landscapers. It is a calming picture of accomplishment for us after it took much of last summer to build over 1.5 miles of fence. And it was not without blood, sweat, and tears. The sheep are not the only ones that call this beautiful place home. There are two mini mules parading around the perimeter on high alert for intruders (or my daughter coming at them with a carrot in hand).
On the other side of the farm, everyone else is figuring out the new corn planter. My dad, the same man on Saturday night as Sunday morning, is driving that tractor with intent. There’s my brother, the focused R&D man, getting the seeds in order and walking down the edge of the field with my 18-month-old daughter at his heels picking up sticks. My husband, the high-tech, “get out of the way I will figure it out” kind of guy, is sitting in the tractor’s buddy seat. He is getting in and out making sure the settings are perfect and everything is working right. My mom, bless her heart, pulls in the field with refreshments for all. Then, I always imagine the old farmer sitting at the old picnic table under that apple tree in the fence row, smiling as we do our work. He unexpectedly passed away 20 years ago, but I know he is looking down on us, glad we ended up with his piece of heaven on earth.
FARMING . . . . It is your church, it’s your family time, it’s how you raise your kids. It is your happy, your sad, and everything in between. You will have your greatest rewards and your greatest heartbreaks there. Whether it is a bug or disease in your crops or an ailment with your animals, you see the circle of life firsthand every day. It builds you up and breaks you down at the same time … it makes you humble.
On the hard days you pick yourself up because you know it has to get better, and it does. You learn that obstacles are no big deal and finding a way to overcome them is second nature. You follow your heart without letting greed get in your way. You do not intentionally think about the faith you have but it shows in everything you do, and you just keep going. We get the chance to preserve God’s land, and I would not have it any other way. There is only so much of it, and we have to take care of it.
As more thoughts come and go, it is almost time to put an end to the spring field work. Here I am rolling the last few acres of beans in hopes of preventing a kerplunk and dreaded growl sound in the big machine I call my office in the fall. I am drinking an “original iced coffee;” it’s the rest of the coffee I found from this morning that I set down when I got busy doing something else—it happens a lot. In the winter I might even find my dad’s hot coffee turned frappé on the steps of the tractor or barn wall.
Here’s to another spring season in the books and still the only thing that stays the same is the everchanging nature of farming. Now we pray for rain and realize rain is a blessing and when it comes pouring down you have no choice but to dance in it. I look forward to the summer days spent in the cab of the tractor, solving the world’s problems, and making hay.

An Inside Look at Homesteading
By Elyse Apel
Jennifer Buehrer and her family are part of a growing movement of families and individuals across the United States that are returning to the land.
Jennifer and her husband Daniel along with their two children, Perry and Lydia, have spent the last several years learning how to grow their own food, make natural cleaning and hygiene products, and learn how to do things as they were done in centuries past.
“I have spent lots of time with the generations before me learning to preserve, forage, and do things the old ways,” Jennifer explains.
But this wasn’t how her family always did it.
Jennifer, who also works as a part-time photographer and homeschools their children, grew up in the city, while Daniel, her husband, grew up in the country.
“It all started with a sunflower seed. Watching the flower grow to almost 12 feet was exciting and eye-opening because I didn’t realize sunflowers could get so tall,” Jennifer says of one of her first homesteading endeavors. “From there we planted easy stuff like tomatoes, green beans, and pollinator flowers.”
When they first started, Jennifer says their intention wasn’t to become a “homesteader” family.
“It all started as a fun project,” she explains. Then Lydia, Jennifer’s daughter, got sick when she was a year old.
“She developed an unknown illness and working with our friends, who are knowledgeable in nutrition, and our local chiropractor, we came to a conclusion that a highly nutritious diet was needed to help her thrive,” says Jennifer.
With the cost of food, Jennifer decided it was time to turn her hobby garden to the next level.

“We bought a small piece of property and got to work mending the soil and growing organic fruits and vegetables,” she says. “While my daughter was healing, we were learning more about the relationship between the soil and our food.”
Jennifer says this was just the start of their homesteading journey. Her deep dive into the ingredients that make up supermarket foods which began as a necessity for her daughter’s health soon turned into a passion. “This is where my drive for homesteading came in,” she explains. “What do I need to do to avoid the grocery store? Answering this question looks a lot like the crime boards on those detective shows or ‘When you give a Mouse a Pancake.’ What needs need to be met? What can we do at home?”
Jennifer didn’t stop at food, though.
“I’ve learned how to make soap, lotions, and salves. We have learned that weeds can be food and have medicinal properties,” she says.
Her family has learned how to weigh the pros and cons of owning different animals.
“Chickens give eggs, manure, and meat, they do not need a lot of room, while cows need more room. So, we buy meat from the local farmers,” Jennifer says.
Homesteading has become a family affair. Perry, Jennifer’s son, works with the chickens, while Lydia, who is now eight, helps make bread and helps preserve the family’s produce. It took a couple of years, but Jennifer says that once they were able to form an entire ecosystem on their property, it became easier.
“Good soil means building compost, fruit trees mean we need bee hives, critter control means cats and dogs, bug control means companion plants and predator bugs. An ecosystem was being built and that is when it became manageable by our little family,” she says.
They now grow a large range of plants in their garden, including tomatoes, green beans, cabbages, carrots, potatoes, corn, fruit trees, berries, and more.
Jennifer says that homesteading has also taught her family how to minimize the waste that is prevalent in today’s society.
“We’ve become less wasteful and developed a community. We have a connection and understanding of food,” she explains. “Homesteading to me can be the act of learning how to be self-sustained in any way.”
Jennifer says that people start homesteading for many different reasons, from hoping to minimize the cost of food or provide security and new experiences for their families. She points out the importance of not comparing your homesteading journey to the journeys of others.
“What works for one person might not work for you. Keep trying. Keep learning. Keep asking questions.”
While beginning a homesteading lifestyle can be daunting for some, she says the most important thing is just to start.
“Just jump in! Start with one or two vegetables. Find someone with a sourdough starter or make bone broth. It will never be perfect. You don’t need a bunch of land. You don’t have to do it all. If you end up with a handful of sunflower seeds . . . I would say it’s a success.”

When it comes to maintaining lush yards and bountiful gardens in Lenawee County, water concerns play a crucial role. As responsible stewards of our environment, we can make a positive impact on our shared resources by being intentional in the ways we water our plants By following a few guidelines and considering the use of appropriate equipment, we can ensure the health of our landscapes while conserving wat er and preserving our natural surroundings for the enjoyment of future generations.
One way we can help is by carefully reading the label on any fertilizer, weed-killer, or pesticide we use or consider alternatives for each Look for a red diamond on the package, the bee advisory box, for guidance on how to use the product safely around bees Only apply pesticides as instructed and avoid those that harm benef icial insects Apply the minimum amount needed and try not to use multiple products during the same period Chances are high that you already have enough phosphorus, a major contributor to algal blooms, in your soil look for phosphorus-free fertilizers when needed
As dry periods become more frequent, now is a great time to evaluate your outdoor space for water-conscious planting opportunities. Maximizing wat er efficiency and reducing water consumption is a decision that will lower your water bill, give you more free time in the hot summer months, and benefit our watershed Apply water around dawn or after dusk to avoid fast evaporation of your hard work Use the proper tools to deliver just the right amount of water in just the right place
Creating a garden that aligns with your preferred watering style is a smart approach to conserve water and maintain an aesthetically pleasing landscape If you have a sunny, dry, and well-drained area in your yard, consider incorporating drought-friendly trees, shrubs, and groundcover Native perennial plants are outstanding choices for your landscape; they are already perfectly suited to our seasons and rainfall patterns
Or maybe your issue is that you have too much water ar ound your home plant a rain garden and divert rainfall from your gutters onto wetland-type plantings
Rain gardens function as natural water storage areas, allowing rainwater to slowly infiltrate the soil instead of becoming runoff By capturing and filtering rainwater, rain gardens help recharge groundwater, reduce stormwater runoff, and improve the health of the River Raisin watershed
Changing our approac h to watering can bring new ideas for the experienced gardener and inspiration to those starting out. Whether you maintain a landscape for utility or beauty, reducing water usage is a practical and beneficial practice Together, we can conserve water, improve our local ecosystems, and contribute to a regional culture of sustainability Let us embrace these practices and make a positive impact on our shared resou rces, ensuring the beauty and vitality of our outdoor spaces for years to come

STACEY HUGHES
Where are you and/or your farm/business located?
My family farm & my seed dealership is located in southern Jackson, Michigan.
What do you farm or what is your role in agricultural?
I grew up on a dairy & cash crop operation, and while my husband, children & I reside on the farm, neither of us are employed at the farm. We sold the dairy cows in August of 2021. Since then, my involvement with the family farm is to help run our farm’s social media page, give farm tours, and engage in community outreach.
My main role in agriculture is running our seed dealership, Hughes Seed Solutions. We service local growers by supplying all of their seed needs through three different brands of seed.
How long have you been involved in Agriculture?
According to the USDA, 31% of Michigan farmers are women. In addition, from veterinarians to teachers, there are countless women who play a valuable role in agriculture. You may find them in the field, barn, classroom, behind the parts counter, or even at the farmers market. Most often it is work you do not see or think about in today’s society.
We were able to contact a few local women in agriculture and find out what they do and why. We hope you learn something new from their stories and that it shines a light on something you may have never thought about.
I’ve been involved in agriculture my whole life. From being born & raised on the farm and through my involvement in 4-H, I had a natural passion for the industry. This led me to pursue a degree at Michigan State University in Animal Science with a specialization in Agribusiness Management. Straight out of college, I worked for a local retailer and handled their seed agency for six and a half years before going out on my own in the seed industry.
Why do you chose to be involved in agriculture?
I’ve chosen to be involved in agriculture because it drives me. I know that no matter what occupation you choose in the industry, you’re making an impact. I love working with it’s people. They’re honest, humble, and hard working. They’re smart & every day they’re people that I learn from - not only professionally but personally too. It’s a lifestyle industry & I value that immensely.
What is your favorite part about what you do?
I have two favorites. One - I love the relationships that I build through my job as a seed dealer. I remember growing up I had my favorite salesman, insurance agent, etc. that would visit the farm. They got to know more than just the decision maker. They knew the whole family, our interests, our nicknames. I make it a point to do the same. Getting a sale is fun (and important) but nothing compares to the true connections you build. Having the opportunity to be welcomed onto our customer’s farms & into their life is something I treasure. They treat me, and my family, like one of their own and I’m eternally grateful.
Second - I love and am deeply passionate about agricultural education. Whether it by directly on the farm, in a classroom, or perhaps in line at the grocery store. I don’t waste an opportunity to educate consumers on modern day food production. And when they are genuinely interested in learning more - my bucket is filled!

CHRISTINA BIGGS LESLIE GOVES
Where are you and/or your farm/business located?
Our farm is located in the Hanover area.
What do you farm or what is your role in agricultural?
We are a crop farm, soybeans, and corn. My role in agriculture is tilling of the soil, planting, most days I’m the one my dad or husband calls because they need parts, seed or fuel. But I can do anything that’s needed.
How long have you been involved in Agriculture?
I have been involved in agriculture my whole life. As a child we had cattle and pigs, about 25 years ago we got out of livestock and went completely crop farm.
Why do you choose to be involved in agriculture?
I choose to be involved in agriculture because it’s the only way I know. I love working this land. Each year is a new learning experience.
What is your favorite part about what you do?
My favorite part about agriculture is everything about it. From planting season, watching nature take care of the crop and to harvest time. It all brings joy and happiness to my life. Even on bad days, it’s always a good day.
I’m 76 years old and have been involved in some form of agriculture for over 40 years. I am a lifelong supporter of living in harmony with our earth. I believe in raising my own food and treating the environment with care.
17 years ago I formed a non-profit organization (Equestrian Outreach Center) to serve at risk youth in our community using our farm as the venue. We teach sustainable agriculture, science education to school groups, homeschool groups and provide anyone an opportunity to experience farm life.
We are located in Hillsdale County. 9551 Sutfin Rd. Jerome We raise chickens for eggs, broilers for meat, heritage pigs for pork, steer for beef and dairy goats for milk.
We have operated a small CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program with the chicken, eggs, pork and goat milk for about 8 years.
My favorite part is sharing homesteading skills with others. We host 3 summer homesteading workshops, one per month on Saturdays. We also have a private group Facebook page with daily posts about life on the farm. It’s visible to anyone if you are interested in checking it out.
Equestrian Outreach Center group Facebook page. Probably the most unique point of interest is our subterranean greenhouse we built in 2022. It’s purpose is to lengthen the growing season with our Michigan winters. It has been a huge success. We were able to harvest out of it all winter and it is currently regrowing well.
REBECCA
The farm that I work on is located in Adrian and my personal farm is in Onsted. I am a dairy herdsmen and I milk my own cows at home. I got into agriculture during the summer between my sophomore and junior year of high school. I didn’t start working with cows till I started college, and since then I’ve been hooked. I love agriculture and the life style that comes with it. It’s extremely fulfilling and there’s always something to do. Everyday there’s something new and you are always learning and improving. I think my favorite part of what I do has to obviously be the cows. I’ve always been an animal lover and being able to spend my day with the things I love just makes it very enjoyable.

ALISON BASSAGE
Where are you and/or your farm/business located?
I am a teacher of the Environmental and Agricultural Sciences Program at the Branch Area Careers Center in Coldwater, MI. I teach 11th and 12th grade students the basics of Ag, Food and Natural Resources (AFNR) as well as co-lead as an advisor of the FFA.
What do you farm or what is your role in agriculture?
With the help of our Farm Manager and Co-teacher, we manage about 40 students on a 180-acre land lab. On our teaching lab, we farm about 150 acres of corn and soybeans and we raise hogs, chickens, goats, sheep and starter calves. The students also plant and manage a greenhouse of 500+ baskets and bedding plants for our annual fundraiser. My biggest role in agriculture is to not only teach, inform and share information about AFNR, but to also make them employable for their future careers. I concentrate heavily on skills that will make them successful in the plethora of fields in agriculture. So whether they would like to be a vet, work on the family farm, be a loan officer for the farmer, etc., my goal is to provide a foundation of knowledge for them to continue to into the work force as leaders and great workers for our industry.
How long have you been involved in Agriculture?
I have been involved in agriculture for most of my life now. Living in a rural area, I was always surrounded by agriculture and had friends on farms, but my family did not operate directly on the farm. Until I was able to join FFA as a middle schooler and get introduced to showing animals, I have been hooked ever since. My family committed the rest of my high school and into my college career to showing pigs locally, state and nationally. I was also able to dabble into goats and starter calves at the county fair. In helping with my local FFA chapter in college, I figured out I wanted to combine my love for animals and my love for helping others. It is then I found Agriculture Education as my calling. I was blessed with the opportunity to teach at my home chapter, the Branch Area Careers Center at the middle of 2015. Ever since then I have been living my dream of teaching at an amazing facility and more importantly, being a part of some pretty awesome kids’ lives.
Why do you chose to be involved in agriculture?
I choose to be involved because I love how much of a variety of careers and opportunities kids can be a part of in this industry. So many people need to be a part of a product in order for it to be grown on the farm and get to our table. Everything from soil, water, the agronomy, production, sales, business, the livestock, and so much more are involved in the every day products we take for granted. I love the tradition, the community, and “families” that are created in this world of agriculture. And knowing that it will never, and CAN NEVER go away, is pretty cool to be a part of.
What is your favorite part about what you do?
My favorite part of my job is witnessing the “light bulb” that goes off when a student learns something. When they start to put together the puzzle pieces in curriculum or solve the reallife problem, it is the best feeling that they found that moment of success. It is then in that moment that drives them to do and learn more. So my every day mission is to set up my class so that someone, if not everyone, can experience the “ah-ha” moments :)
MELISSA KAFER
I grew up in North Adams, MI on a dairy farm, currently live in Pittsford MI, and work at Greenmark Equipment Jonesville, MI in the parts department. I am selling parts to Dairy/Crop farmers in and all around Hillsdale county. I have been involved in agriculture my whole life, with growing up on a farm and the starting working in the parts world in 2008. This job just kind of landed in my lap, I actually have two associates degrees in Business management and Accounting, but I enjoy this job once I got the hang of looking up all the different parts and helping out all the different customers and all the different equipment they have. I have a few favorites of my job which is doing the farm visits, which lets me see where everyone lives and their different operations, also helping out with their individual needs, getting to know everyone that I have met along the way and their families, its been 15 years in this business and I have enjoyed it, I think in the beginning I was a big surprise for the older (men) farmers having to adjust to a women behind the counter, took them a while but I have been accepted here and have had many compliments on how much I have learned and grown over the years.

JACKIE SANFORD
Where are you and/or your farm/business located?
Sanford Family Beef is our farm name. Chris and I raise cattle in the Springport/Parma area and sell them all the the public through our farm store located on our farm as well as beef shares. Customers can shop our farm store Fridays 2-6pm and Saturdays 10am-3pm year round for all their beef needs. They can grab a package of steaks and a pound of ground beef and so many more beef cuts. We also raise pigs in the summer which are available in the fall. Our website for all of the details on our farm is sanfordfamilybeef.com
What do you farm or what is your role in agricultural?
We raise beef and pork here on our farm. Our boys are 7th generation of Sanfords on this farm. We started our farm May of 2016, raising cattle at a friends operation, until we purchased Chris’ family’s farm December 2019. In 2020, we built our cattle barn and farm store which opened October of 2020 to the public.
Chris is responsible for securing our feed sources, the daily feeding, picking up meat and dropping off animals to the butcher. I do the behind the scenes work. Accounting, marketing, and most of the paperwork is my responsibility. This allows me to work my full time job during the week and help the farm on nights and weekends. Communication with our customers is a key piece of my role on the farm. We love sharing our story, our why, and helping tell the truth of agriculture. Our farm store provides us that opportunity to do so and I love it. I communicate with our customers via a weekly email providing new recipe ideas, I give them first dibs on all of our new products and bundles, and give them farm store updates. I also manage our social media presence.
How long have you been involved in Agriculture?
I grew up on a cash crop farm in Springport and met Chris my Sophomore year of high school. Growing up my mom always told my sister and I to never marry a farmer. Well once I met Chris that advice went out the window. I got involved in FFA my senior year and through that experience learned that agriculture is much more than just farming. So I pursued my bachelors in accounting knowing I could work for any agricultural company, anywhere in the world with that degree. I currently work for GreenStone Farm
Credit Services as a Senior Chattel Appraiser. I appraise everything that moves on a farm, mainly equipment and livestock traveling the state of Michigan going greenhouses, vegetable, fruit, and winery’s.
Why do you chose to be involved in agriculture?
Legacy. The few memories I have of farming growing up are very near and dear to me. We wanted to raise our family on a farm. Infinite life lessons to be learned on a farm. It’s been a humbling experience thus far. Our boys have a unique upbringing here on the farm compared to many of their classmates and we love that decision for our family.
What is your favorite part about what you do?
I love our customers, I love answering their questions on all things agriculture as well as their meal prep struggles. I learn a lot from them and their questions. I used to be afraid to talk to people about farming but honestly they are just curious about what we do. With many being 3-4 generations removed from a farm, they just want to know and understand farming. I love teaching them about farming and given my experience at GreenStone I can speak to most types of farms here in Michigan and how they raise their crops or livestock. My grandma’s taught me to love the kitchen from baking to cooking, which is not the case for many of our customers. I enjoy helping them solve their mealtime struggles from an easy dish to make on game nights or how to make a prime rib for the first time.

Pet Talk
Can Pets See Colors?
The popular notion that pets see in black and white, notably dogs, is false. People once thought that their furry companions couldn’t see the color spectrum. However, the American Kennel Club reports that new research and conclusions about canine anatomy point to dogs having color vision, after all — it’s just a bit more muted than their human friends.
According to Dr. Jerry Klein, AKC’s chief veterinary officer, dogs have more rods than cones in their eyes, which improves low-light vision. Cones are responsible for controlling color perception. Due to these anatomical differences, it is believed dogs’ vision mimics that of a person with red/green color blindness. Color is perceptible for dogs, but not in the spectrum enjoyed by humans with healthy vision. Cats also can see in color, but similarly not with the same level of detail as people. Furthermore, their vision is much more attuned to upclose sight than to focusing on objects that are far away.
According to Birdfact, an online resource about birds, birds have arguably the best eyesight and ability to detect color of any member of the animal kingdom. Birds can see more color than humans because they have a fourth type of light-receiving cone in their retinas (humans have three). Therefore, a pet bird will be in tune with vibrantly colored items in and around his environment. Arizona State University’s Ask a Biologist offers an interesting chart that illustrates colors certain animals can see at https://askabiologist.asu.edu/colorsanimals-see. People who want to know if their pet rabbit can see color, or what those fish in their home aquariums can see, can consult the chart.

Homesteading
is a lifestyle that leads to a more self-su cient way of living.
Hillsdale County lends itself very well to homesteading but homesteading can also be done in urban areas, even in apartments. Often when people think of homesteading, they think of gardening, but it really includes any activities that involve providing for yourself. Below are a few ways that you can homestead:
Kitchen: The kitchen is a great place to begin your homestead lifestyle! In the kitchen you can prepare anything from your own food to your own personal care items. Baking bread, preserving your own food, cooking your own meals, making your own salve, and making your own wines are all ways to homestead.
Gardening: Of course, gardening is a form of homesteading and it can be done almost anywhere and at any level. From growing plants (vegetable plants, flowers, and herbs) in your apartment to full-fledged gardening, gardening can be a very rewarding experi-ence and provide some of the freshest food you will eat.
Preparedness: Preparing your home and family for likely emergencies is also considered homesteading. Installing a whole house generator for when our Michigan storms take out the power is an example of this form of homesteading. Putting money aside for a rainy day fund would also be this form of homesteading.
Home Remedies and Natural Health: This one is one of my personal favorites. From being able to handle some of life’s common colds and sicknesses to knowing what foods promote good health is one of life’s greatest treasures. It takes some time and learning to get there but de nitely worth it. Your local health food store can be a great resource for this one.
There is always more to learn about homesteading but take one step at a time and you will be headed in the direction you wish to go. Visit your local farmers market to connect with other homesteaders and find products you don’t have yourself. Supporting the local farmers market also supports our local farmers, businesses, and families.
