Editor’s Letter This is my favorite time of the year. Schools are about break up and everyone can look forward to lazy days and long hot, sticky summer nights. With the ash cloud and inevitable airport delays, many people are once again thinking about a staycation in the UK. Having just got back from Devon I would recommend this as a holiday resort option. It isn’t as far as you think, it took just four and a half hours to drive there. Check out my review on page on page 17.

Talking of driving, I have no car and gave it up two months ago. Weighing up the cost of the service and MOT, not forgetting tax and insurance, against the costs of getting taxis and buses it was a sensible decision and far more beneficial than I first realised. The kids have been walking to school now for over a month and are not only fitter, but a lot calmer too. When I need a car I just go and hire one for the day, which costs little more than £25 - a real bargain! Having no car has also saved money on our food bills, by not going to the supermarket and filling a boot with impulsive buys, I now go shopping to collect the essentials for the day. Not only is the food fresher but it’s also a lot less expensive. And I have to say that I am impressed with the public transport in the city, it is reliable, clean and safe. Merseyside is a hive of activity in the summer, with The Summer Pops in full swing. We chat exclusively to disco diva and dance queen Nikki Belle as she launches her new single which is set to storm to the top of the charts. Lifestyle Monthly is gearing up for some great events in this fantastic city. Firstly I am holding a small champagne reception for special guests at my home. Not only will it allow people to mingle business networking with pleasure, but it also allows me to showcase the fabulous interior design makeover that Paul O Hare completed recently on my home. Our photographer will be snapping away for the social pages in the next edition, and I am to be filmed by MTV for a documentary about the high glamourous lifestyle in Liverpool. As Southport hosts the 139th British Open Golf, we bring you a guide to some of the best golfing around our region. Read the feature on page 30. Lifestyle Monthly is also holding an intimate jazz concert featuring our favorite saxophone player, Julian Smith, who will be coming to Liverpool for a special concert along with his contemporary band. We have just 400 tickets to sell for this exclusive event which is to be held on Sunday 3 October. For the second year running, Fashion Week in Liverpool hits the city in the autumn and showcases designers, boutiques and high street fashion houses from across Southport, Liverpool and the Wirral. Expect catwalk shows to include bridal wear, lingerie, casual wear, high street style, evening gowns and high end pieces so that every budget and style is catered for. Tickets will be available soon so keep your eye on our website for regular updates. As usual Lifestyle Monthly is at the cutting edge of what’s hot and happening around the region and we are proud to be able to bring you such quality events. Students Exhibit Textile Art in Wirral

Wirral, until July 11. The centre is open 10am5pm Monday to Saturday and 11am-5pm Sundays. Admission is free.

The vibrant colours of a summer garden favourite inspired the creation of a masterpiece on show at a new exhibition in Wirral.

£40,000 FOR JOSPICE

Christine Jones work – entitled Fuchsias – forms part of an exhibition of textiles currently running at Voirrey Embroidery Centre at Brimstage Hall, Brimstage, Wirral.

Hundreds of people took part in the recent annual Jospice Midnight Walk, sponsored by Medicash, raising an estimated £40,000 for the charity.

The exhibits are examination work by embroidery students and members of embroidery technique workshops at West Cheshire College who are aged from 30 to 70.

Fundraisers took to the streets of Crosby and followed an 11k route which started and finished at Holy Family High School in Thornton.

“I let the colours run together then spattered acrylic paint on to the fabric. “The fuchsia shapes were created using printing blocks that I made from card, string and sponge and I used a range of threads, net and organza to create the fuchsias, buds and leaves.”

Jospice’s director of fundraising Pat Murphy said: “We are once again overwhelmed with the tremendous support from people and businesses across the region. We want to say a big thank you to all the walkers and their supporters for the fantastic amount of money they have raised.”

The exhibition is a collection of the work of more than 20 students, who have been tutored by West Cheshire College’s Sue Sercombe. Stitched and Constructed Textiles can be seen at Voirrey Embroidery Centre, Brimstage Hall, Brimstage,

A £340,000 facelift for Blundellsands & Crosby Station car park has more than doubled the number of spaces to 102 including six blue badge bays plus parking for 74 cycles. Funded by Merseytravel and delivered by Merseyrail, the work includes improvements to the existing entrance and a taxi drop off point; there is also new lighting and CCTV and improvements to pedestrian access. There are also secure cycle parking equipment lockers on the Liverpool bound platform, which, along with the cycle storage facilities, have been funded from money awarded by Cycling England. Last year Merseyrail and Merseytravel secured a £1 million bid to become a National Cycling Demonstration Train Operator with Blundellsands & Crosby station being one of 18 to benefit from the facilities.

MIDNIGHT WALKERS RAISE

“This exhibition looks at how people celebrate life through the events that they go to. Throughout the year we get invited to all sorts of different events including birthday parties, retirement dos, funerals, christenings, weddings, new year, religious and cultural festivals etc. At each one the setting, the mood and the colours change and people dress differently according to each occasion. Each event generates different emotions and feelings. We thought it would be interesting – and fun – to capture these in our photos.” The Fab Collective is a diverse group of Liverpool photographers who share a passion for capturing the city of Liverpool and its residents in their pictures. AMBER WINE BAR AND BISTRO 193-195 Rose Lane Mossley Hill Liverpool L18 5EA

0151 724 5169 www.amberwinebar.com

Tucked away in the leafy suburbs of Allerton, on the fashionable Rose Lane, lies Amber, the fashionable restaurant popular with WAGS and ladies who lunch. Owner Faris Safar has launched an outside catering service on the strengths of Amber’s popularity and success…..In an interview with Amanda Moss How did Amber come about? After graduating in Hotel Catering and Institutional management from Sheffield Hallam University and working practically all my life in hospitality, I felt that I was ready for a new challenge. I’d managed some really great restaurants and looked after lots of outside catering events and functions; I felt that I’d accomplished everything that I wanted to achieve as a manager. The next step was to manage my own business.

Why did you decide to go into outside catering? When we opened Amber Wine Bar & Bistro in 2006, people and critics loved the concept. So I knew the Amber Brand had lots of potential to expand. Over the years lots of our customers asked us if we could cater for larger parties. We like to keep the bistro on Rose lane quite exclusive and intimate. The only way around this was for us to start bringing Amber to peoples parties! After catering for a number of events outside of the bistro and getting bigger and better events under our belts, Amber Outside Catering was launched.. We went from catering for dinner parties of 20 to weddings of 400 guests and huge corporate events in a matter of months.

You specialise in weddings and special events- what service do you offer? We are happy to do as little or as much as our clients would like us to. We are happy to just look after the catering side of things but quite often people’s confidence in Amber leads to us taking care of everything! We offer a complete wedding service where we can arrange Marquees, Bespoke Wedding Cakes, room & table dressing, wedding cars, award winning dress makers, ,Dj’s & entertainment. We can even put couples in contact with Wedding Ring designers! In terms of special events, again it could be anything from supplying uniformed staff to serve Champagne & Canapes at a VIP launch right up to a Gala dinner for a few hundred guests!

What kind of menus do you devise? We try to be as diverse as we can with our menus. Our choice of cuisine is endless and we offer completely bespoke menus. We always believe in offering value for money and have everything from canape menus, business lunch menus, BBQ menus, Buffet menus right up to Dinner & Wedding Breakfast menus. We really do cater for all ends of the spectrum so if your just wanting some sandwiches dropping into your office, we offer gourmet sandwich platters from as little as £2.50 per person.

Tell us about your experience of working in New York and how you have used that experience with Amber After graduating, an opportunity came up to gain experience over in America. It was working for a company called Loft11 based in Manhattan, they are one of New Yorks Premier loft spaces & events organizers. The experience I gained over in the states was priceless. We would be catering for, organizing and managing some extremely prestigious events on a weekly basis. It could be anything from a Film Directors Wedding to a fashion shoot for Vogue. We would literary start with a blank canvas and have to arrange every aspect of the event, décor, lighting, food, PR. I’ve used this experience to not settle for anything less than the best. Again, we really give all of our events the wow factor. There’s no point in just doing a good event, every event that we do has to be amazing!

Where does the name Amber come from? It describes the warm glow of our restaurant of an evening and that’s originally what we wanted to purvey, but when its put in the context of our company logo and branding it starts to mean a lot more to people. It then becomes a name thats associated with quality, food, drink & service!

Tell us about the decor in your restaurant and why you chose the theme I’d spent years researching the Amber Concept in terms of menus, wine lists and service style but I was still a bit undecided on décor. I’d been to London & Barcelona a few times to try and get some inspiration but nothing had really wowed me. A friend of mine, Louise Kavanagh from Boudoir Boutique, Cavern Walks suggested that a few of us should go to Paris for the weekend to check out the bars over there, so that’s what we did. We loved the intimacy of a lot of the Wine Bar & bistros in Paris and that’s where the inspiration came from. We found an antique dresser for sale from an old Chateux and we had it shipped back to Liverpool. That French dresser is now the bar and we started designing the interior around that. Lots of Chandeliers and textured wall papers to give it a really sexy Parisian feel! Our customers love the interior, especially the ladies who lunch and the WAG’s!

Why have you expanded into outside catering? After catering for a lot of our bistro customer’s special occasions we thought that there was a gap in the market for us. As I’ve said before, we cater for all events, some on a really grand scale and others more intimate. That makes no difference to us. If your on a budget, just let us know what your budget is and we’ll do our best to come in on line. We don’t believe in compromising quality but why should people have to put up with mediocre food for what’s often a very important milestone event? Amber Outside Catering ensures that your events are remembered forever, for all the right reasons.

Tell us what you offer your current clients with outside catering We offer an extremely personal and professional service from drop off business lunches, personal chef hire, sandwich platters right up to Weddings & Gala dinners. We can literary cater for any event and take the stress & headaches away from our clients, making sure that on the day of the event, our clients are free to enjoy the occasion as much as every other guest. Our philosophy is that if something is at all possible, then we will make it happen. We also offer a free tasting service for people who are booking events with us and our expert Wine Consultant to suggest wines for events

Holiday

Beauty by Sian Davies

Well, ladies summer is upon us! And I am going to offer some great tips for showing off your glowing holiday skin and show how to get that fresh ‘au naturel’ look. A lot of women tend to struggle with this type of make-up look as it's all about getting a flawless base and good coverage without actually smothering your skin in products. The best way to do this is prepping your skin really well. I use Dermalogica Ultra Calming Cleanser as it’s full of fantastic ingredients like Rasberry Extracts, Lavender and Echinacea which healand protect your skin from environmental influences such as pollutionand climate. I follow this with the Dermalogica Multi Active Toner and then finish by moisturising with Embryolisse LaitCreme Concentre otherwise known as ‘the 24 Hour Miracle Cream’. It iskey to really work the cream in as it absorbs better and plumps upyour skin giving it an instant more youthful appearance. This summer a dewy complexion is the big trend, as it was seen all over the catwalks at London Fashion Week, and my sneaky little way of instantly getting your base less matte is to mix in a little of Benefit’s High Beam Highlighter

(£17.50) with your foundation. Ifyou need to conceal I always recommend the Bobbi Brown CreamyConcealers (£16.50). A popular look this season will be minimal eyesand a bright statement colour on the lips, it’s the perfect summeryday look with a fun twist of colour. For this look, I swept a neutral eyeshadow, Mac ‘Shroom’ (£9) across the lids and lined the waterline with a white kohl pencil to make the eyes appear more open, and just used clear mascara to define and lengthen the lashes. For brows I always use Smashbox Brow Tech (£18),as the wax holds hairs firmly in place and the powder is a really natural way of filling in any gaps without giving that ‘drawn on’ appearance. I then lightly dusted Estee Lauder’s ‘Peach Nuance’ Blush (£23) across the apples of the cheeks for a really soft, healthyglow. For the lips I chose a shade from Mac’s Amplified range called ‘Vegas Volt’ (£12.50) which has both pink and coral tones in it. To build the lip colour, I apply the product using a lip brush, blot andre-apply a couple of times as this really gets the colour bright andhas more durability. To transform this makeup instantly into an evening look is simple. I lined the eyes with Bobbi Brown’s Longwear Gel Eyeliner in ‘BlackInk’ (£15) with a little flick at the outer corners to give a more feline look to the eyes, and lined the waterline with black kohlpencil. To finish off the eyes I used 2 coats of Dior Blackoutmascara (£21.50). To make the lips a little more glamourous I added a Mac Dazzleglass ‘Smile’ (£14.50).

If you would like to contact me for any tips and advice or would like me to demonstrate how to do a particular look in a future issue of Lifestyle Monthly, then email me at info@siandaviesmakeup.co.uk or alternatively get in touch via my Facebook Fan Page (Sian DaviesMake-up Artist)

ASK THE EXPERT Cosmetic Surgery 1. I am contemplating having cosmetic surgery abroad as the surgery is cheaper. If anything goes wrong am I covered by the British legal system? No, you would have to take action in the country where you undergo the surgery. You would be bound by their legislative and civil process.

2. I have been told to check out at least three facelift surgeons before having treatment. Should they be certified by any medical board or register? Surgical practice in the UK is regulated by the General Medical Council and practising surgeons should be enrolled on its specialist register. You can visit the General Medical Council website on www.gmc-uk.org. Many practitioners hold themselves out as experts, but many are not even qualified surgeons. Organisations associated with and preferably based in the Royal College of Surgeons will adhere to acceptable standards. The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons BAAPS is based at the Royal College of Surgeons and this organisation was established to raise educational standards, and offer information to the public about the risks and benefits of cosmetic surgery. Visit their website on www.baaps.org.uk. Invasive cosmetic surgery and laser treatment are also regulated under the Care Standards Act 2000. The Healthcare Commission inspects all registered establishments that carry out invasive procedures and laser surgery in the UK and does have the power to revoke practice licenses and to take enforcement action. In 2005 the Department of Health published a report Regulation of Cosmetic Surgery. The Department of Health report showed, that regulations governing the cosmetic surgery industry were unsatisfactory. On a practical note, any patient contemplating cosmetic surgery should discuss this with their general practitioner. The general practitioner will ordinarily have local knowledge of surgeons and will also be able to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of the proposed surgery. Informed consent is a major issue in these cases. All surgery carries risks. Organised clinics will ensure that the risks and benefits of the proposed procedure are discussed in detail with you. Most reputable organisations will provide you with fact sheets and written information carefully spelling out the risks.

3. I had some skin rejuvenation treatment after I was impressed by their brochure and sales luncheon I went to. It was supposed to rejuvenate my skin and the person who applied the cosmetic procedure told me she was qualified (it later turned out that she was previously a hairdresser who had done a masters in Laser Technology - do these degrees even exist?) My face was injured after surgery, far beyond what they warned me, I was bruised and scarred for months, to the point where I wouldn't go out as I was so self conscious. I was in agony as well with the swelling and took paracetamol. When I went back to the clinic they told me that the paracetamol would have cancelled the effects of the treatment. Lasers used in plastic surgery are aimed to counteract ageing of the skin; it can reduce fine wrinkles and can slightly tighten the skin. The risks associated with laser therapy are slight changes in pigmentation, and long term lightening of pigmentation is also a possibility. With normal skin it is thought that scarring is rare. It would be sensible to choose a surgeon who is an accredited plastic surgeon trained in laser surgery. Members of BAAPS are all on the General Medical Council Specialist Register in plastic surgery. Because laser therapy procedures are non-surgical and non-invasive, they are not defined as a surgical procedure, practitioners who are not surgeons are able to carry out the procedures. The practitioner must display the standard degree of skill and competence. In order to assess whether your treatment was carried out to an acceptable standard you would have to ask for an independent opinion via a lawyer as to whether the damage you suffered was a recognised complication of such a procedure or was as a result of negligence. i.e due to the inexperience and/or faulty technique of the operator. I have pursued many cases involving cosmetic surgery over the years. Many of the cases involve failure by the surgeon to obtain informed consent. It is therefore vital that any person seeking cosmetic surgery obtains as much information as possible. The clinic should provide written documentation. Please do not hesitate to ask questions of your surgeon. Don't feel pressurised into undergoing a procedure at any given time. If necessary, take time out to make the decision, consult with your general practitioner, visit the BAAPS website and remember that, above all, it is you who should retain control of the decision making process.

Jade Ainsworth SHE’S FEISTY, FASHIONABLE AND FUN!!!

I’ve just got back from our family holiday, and it was really nice for the three of us to spend some quality time together and relax by the pool for two weeks. I got called Cleopatra the whole time we were away as I didn’t move the whole holiday. I did get my usual shopping craving though being the shopaholic I am so I was quite happy to return home.

Some of the key pieces available at www.missselfridge.com

Since coming home i have attended a couple of events at our Liverpool hot spot and celebrity hang out Palm Sugar. One of which was the showcase of Kirsty Doyles Sex and the City fashion show and I also attended the fantastic celebration of Palm Sugar and Chaporaya 1st Birthday. We had a fantastic night and the staff looked after us really well. I have also been busy filming part of the documentary “Beautiful Liverpool” where we discussed our plans for our exciting Fashion Week that we are holding in the City in October. I am so proud to be working with the magazine to hold such a huge event to show what fantastic reputation Liverpool has to offer in the fashion industry. We already have some top designers signed up with us along with the best boutiques around. So this is really going to be a popular event so I advise you to get your tickets quick as it is definitely going to be a sold out event! It is coming towards the end of the buying season for our summer wardrobe I’d say as the autumn winter stock is starting to arrive. Net a porter have already sold out of most of their jackets and coats, but before we do say good bye I think you should have a look at what Miss Selfridge has at the moment. Here are some of their key pieces (pictured opposite) and are all quite reasonably priced. Everything is available at www.missselfridge.com

I was really impressed when i took a trip to River Island this week, i loved so many of their outfits. I bought a gorgeous maxi dress that I wore for the filming of the documentary. It was a paisley print with lovely lemon, lime and green shades running through with beautiful detailing around the neck edge. I also bought these suede clogs for £59.99 which will go with almost anything this season and next. I also came across this amazing fringed three quarter length sleeve jacket which was a bargain for £39.99. I fell in love it and it looks far much nicer in person. Both these items are available at www.river-island.com

I can also give you a sneak preview of their 2010 winter collection. There are some beautiful pieces, two of which are these Diana Ankle Boots for £140 and a great belt to pair them up with.

At a recent vintage fair I came across an up and coming jewellery designer Passion Jewellery. She had some fabulous pieces ranging from £25 - £30 for a set. My favourite one was this bracelet and I was really impressed with the fact that she made it all herself. Everything is available at www.passion-jewellery.com

At The New Mersey Retail Park I made one of my regular visits to fabulous beauty hall in Boots At the Benefit counter the service is always fantastic. I updated my make-up bag with a gorgeous pink lip and cheek stain called Posie Tint (23.50) the must have for this summer. I then had a benebabe eyebrow wax and tint at the amazing brow bar (£18) top tip: finish off the look with the brow kit for perfect looking brows, Brow Zings (£22.50) drop in or make an appointment with the Benefit Counter on 0151 494 2548'

KEMPS BISTRO Stanley Park is one of Liverpool's most historic parks, designed by Edward Kemp and opened in 1870. The Grade 2 park was built for the public to escape from their unhealthy living conditions. With over ÂŁ14.5 million spent on restoring it over the last two years, it is home to the Isla Gladstone and within it the not so well known Kemps Bistro. Three words sum up this jewel within the park: Supreme, superb and smashing. The inexpensive menu will appeal to all tastes, I loved the varied mediterranean selection. For starters we had homous with assorted cheeses and parma ham, together with the choritzo sausage and salad. Unfussy dishes but ever so tasty and excellent portion sizes as well. For mains it was hard not to be tempted by the delicious looking specials board- and they didn't disappoint our expectations. We both tucked into the roast lamb loin was sublime, the best I have ever tasted. Honestly. Served with generous helpings of red cabbage and roasted new potatoes it

was a real treat to be waited on by the friendly and ever so helpful staff who went out of their way to ensure we had enough drinks throughout the meal. One thing worth noting is that Kemps is extremely child friendly, there's a dedicated kids menu with plenty of activities to keep them occupied while their meals are being prepared. This makes it an excellent day out to visit the park and eat in Kemps. After the meal my friend and I took a leisurely stroll through the park. It was a beautiful sunny day and we felt miles away from Liverpool City Centre. We felt awash with serenity and peace, it was like being on holiday, hard to believe that home was just a couple of miles away. Kemps is a gorgeous place to relax and unwind and enjoy wholesome, healthy food. The service was outstanding and I was so impressed that I have already booked my Christmas party there..... I know, shhh, don't mention that word in July!!!!

Signature Cafe You are inevitably spoilt for choice when deciding to stop for a bite to eat in Liverpool city centre. However, a place which you may not think of dining at is actually well worth a visit – the Signature Café on the second floor in Rapids. Popular with an older clientele it is exceptionally child friendly, with adequately spaced tables to allow pushchairs through. The seating is very comfortable, which it should be considering it is set in a furniture store, with a cream and brown colour scheme. All the food is locally sourced and cooked fresh daily on the premises, the specials board changes everyday and includes soups and casseroles. Value for money is the only way to describe the Signature cafe. Favourites such as beans on toast and egg on toast are just £1.69, rising to a not-so-hefty £2.69 for sausage egg and toast. As with any café there’s a wide choice of jacket potato and fillings, sandwiches, paninies and the chef’s daily specials which include fish and chips and scouse. I had a beef and mushroom pie which was delicious and better than many pub lunches I have had.

Signature Cafe 2nd Floor, Williamson Square, Liverpool City Centre, L1 1EA

The children finished off their dinner with cupcakes and chocolate gateau while I had a cream tea. The afternoon tea for two is just £8.49 and includes a sandwich tray, scone with jam and Cornish clotted cream, tea or freshly ground coffee. One thing worth noting here is that with a high turnover of diners, the tables are cleaned very swiftly and the exceptional service is always guaranteed with a genuine smile.

y r a i D s s Fitne of the editor with her personal trainer

Amanda Moss continues her sessions with Lewis Bailey, living up to his deserved reputation as the number one personal trainer in the city.

12:13

Page 27

I had a week off from Lewis to go to Devon and I was surprised by how much I missed my training sessions. I couldn’t wait to get back into the studio as my body felt sluggish and bloated. So much so that Lewis booked me in for an extra hour, so I have just completed two sessions in two days. And I am as stiff as cardboard this morning but I know some good must have been done. I am so much stronger it is unbelievable. Last week when the magazines were delivered to the office it I practically swung each box over my shoulder as I moved them into the storage area. Six months ago I had to push them along the floor. Another undignified workout took place yesterday. Lying on my back with both legs in the air I was reminded of the delivery suite at the Women’s Hospital. I had to curl my legs forwards and backwards in the air to tighten my abdomen muscles. As I was doing it I kept praying that I didn’t wet myself as I was desperate for the toilet. You know, women of a certain age who have had children have to worry about these things. I have four weeks until I hit the beach in

Cyprus and with a little bit of willpower, which I don’t usually have, I am determined to tone up those stubborn wobbly areas. I recently read that Eva Longoria’s best friend was her personal trainer and her set of 8 kg dumbbells. That was all she needed to get her body into shape. While I can only ever dream of looking like her, I can at least copy her training exercises. A friend recently asked me which machines I used at the gym and when I told her that I didn’t she was surprised. My training usually consists of lunges, press ups, and dumbbells. As Lewis says, you don’t need any machines to exercise, just a clear space and a mat. He explains that more damage can be done by machines as they take away some of the weight of your body and you could be harming a muscle without actually realising it until later. Simple training exercises are a lot more effective as you can feels every part of the body you are working. Judging by the tenderness of my aching limbs and torso today I would have to disagree. No pain, no gain…. And with every creaking, aching muscle, I know that it’s doing me some good.

As the North West’s premier golfing tournament, The Women's British Open, commences we bring you a guide to the best golfing facilities in the region Having previously hosted two Ryder Cups, the Walker and Curtis Cups, four Women’s British Opens and The Open Championship on nine occasions, Royal Birkdale Golf Club will be hosting the Ricoh Women’s British Open again in 2010 from the 29th July – 1st August. The Ricoh Women’s British Open is one of the most exciting Majors in golf. As the only women’s Major played outside the US it is the most international with the 2009 field boasting players from 25 different nations and included every player inside the world’s top 30. Royal Birkdale Golf Club enjoys a welldeserved reputation as being among the best and most challenging golf courses in the world. It’s a historic venue that provides a very unsympathetic test of the abilities of any golfer, as well as boasting superb viewing platforms for spectators.

The Southport Club is a fitting stage on which to perform for the world’s leading players. The course is unique in that no two holes face in the same direction giving obvious problems on the notoriously windy days prevalent to any links. Some of the most dramatic moments in golf have taken place at the links course including the famous 1961 Open during which Arnold Palmer played what seemed like an impossible shot on his way to victory. It was also the venue for the memorable 1969 Ryder Cup, when Jack Nicklaus conceded a four-foot putt to Tony Jacklin to halve the contest after a hard fought battle, and more recently, Irishman Padraig Harrington’s memorable victory in the 2008 Open Championship. A new chapter is ready to be added as Royal Birkdale Golf Club gears up to host its fifth Women’s British Open. Spain’s Marta Figueras-Dotti won the inaugural Championship held at Royal Birkdale back in 1982 with England’s golf star Laura Davies achieving glory four years later in 1986. Sweden’s Sophie Gustafson won the title in 2000 after the tournament had become cosanctioned with the LPGA and five years later Korea’s Jeong Jang claimed her first Major

and professional victory by defeating Gustafson and another Korean, Young Kim, by four shots on 16-under par 272. This year’s tournament will see 2009 champion Catriona Matthew return to defend her title but the Scot will face stiff competition from many fellow Europeans including Sweden’s Suzann Pettersen and the 2000 champion Sophie Gustafson. Americans Michelle Wie, Paula Creamer and Natalie Gulbis, will all have their eyes on the trophy, seeking their first Major win at this year’s Championship.

Lifestyle magazine was lucky enough to catch up with the 2009 Ricoh Women’s British Open champion, Catriona Matthew ahead of what promises to be another fantastic tournament in 2010. Hi Catriona, are you looking forward to defending your title at Royal Birkdale Golf Club? I am really excited to be defending my title at Birkdale. I have had a remarkable 12 months since the birth of Sophie which would probably have been more than enough excitement on it’s own. Add that to winning my first Major and I feel very fortunate. This year will obviously be different with the pressures that accompany any defending champion but I am looking forward to it. What a wonderful position to be in and I know I will feel enormous pride when I am announced on that first tee as the defending Champion. Walking up the 18th last year, talk a little bit as to how you were feeling? After I’d got a good drive away on the 18th I felt I could relax a bit as I had enough of a cushion that I knew I had won. It was an

Page 31

amazing feeling and at the start of the week I certainly didn’t expect to be there. It was only 11 weeks after I had my second little girl Sophie so I wasn’t expecting too much. I’d been playing well in the early stages of my pregnancy but obviously I hadn’t played competitively or practiced a great deal. I played the previous week at the Evian Masters and was feeling excited at the thought of playing in my home Major and was hoping to do well enough to get into the Solheim Cup… How did you celebrate winning your first Major? A Well, my mum had looked after the night feeds during the tournament so by Sunday night she was certainly thinking it was my turn. So, Major winner or not I was sat there doing the 3am feed with a cup of tea… glamorous! Were you surprised at the coverage? A I think the fact that I was a British winner, along with that it was so soon after the birth of Sophie, made people take more notice than they might otherwise have done. Kim Clisters made big news when she came back and won her first Major having had her little girl so I think hard working mum’s everywhere enjoyed our success.

Catriona Matthew with her husband and caddy Graeme

Your husband Graeme is your caddy, how do you manage with childcare when you are out on Tour? We do it ourselves with the help of the LPGA’s great childcare programme so, like many mum and dad’s, we drop them off at the crèche at the start of the day and head off to work! It certainly stops you dwelling on what’s happened on course that day – good or bad - when you have two energetic little girls to take care of. The Ricoh Women’s British Open was founded by the Ladies’ Golf Union in 1976 and is staged in conjunction with IMG, the world’s largest sports marketing company. The event has been co-sanctioned by the LPGA and LET since 1994 and gained Major status in 2001.

What book are you reading at the moment? It's a work related book called “the advanced Skin analysis” by Florence Barret Hill. In my occupation it is imperrative to keep up to date with the state of art treatments in terms of skin physiology and health. Being in beauty for over 15 years now, what is the latest and most advanced treatment? This is definitley Beautytek, as featured in “How to look good naked” on Channel 4. This revolutionary treatment kick starts cell metabolism aids lymphatic drainage and releases excess fat stored around the cells. It gives the customer an amazing 2-6” inch loss after the course. What do you want to achieve in 2010? My salon was already selected in 2009 for the “Most desirable Salon Award”. And for 2010 I would like to expand my area of expertise into laser rejuvenation. Who would be your perfect dinner date? Well, not so much a “Date”, for me the perfect dinner would be a group of my best friends enjoying good food and drinks after an exhasuting day of shopping. Great! Where would you go for dinner? As my salon is based in West Kirby I like to go to KOI. If a shopping trip is included it must be the “Bar and Grill” in Liverpool as it's a great combination of fab food and buzzing atmosphere. Sharing a drink with Mojito Events planner Jo Bennett brings a fresh twist to hen and stag parties with her company, Mojito Events. Love the name "Mojitoevents" How did it come about? The name Mojito purely comes from my love for the cocktail. I also had a clear vision of how I wanted the Mojito branding to look and feel....fresh, invigorating, vibrant. When anyone sees the Mojito logo, they immediately want to sit in the sun in their favourite bar sipping a cocktail!!! What kind of things do you offer? Mojito specialise in arranging hen and stag weekends, activity breaks and corporate parties throughout the North West and North Wales. What's the most memorable party you have thrown and why? Every party or weekend we arrange is unique and special in every way and that’s what makes Mojito a great company. We appreciate that everyone has very different tastes, needs, ideas and budgets and we take all of that into account when we are arranging our events. People come to us for help for what will be a very special occasion so it is our job to make sure every party we arrange is memorable. Who would be your ideal party guests? People generally come to us because they want an event to be seamless, hassle-free, exclusive and perhaps something a little out of the ordinary so we don’t really have an ‘ideal party guest’ as such. Just a group of friends/colleagues who are ready to have a great time and experience a party or event that they will remember for all the right reasons. What are the 3 key ingredients for a great event? A good groups of friends, a great venue....and of course Mojito Events! What are your favourite cocktails? Hand on heart...it has got to be the Mojito!!! Every time I go to friends these days I ensure I am armed with a bag of limes and a mint plant!!! You are based in Liverpool but where else do you travel to? We focus on locations in the North West purely as these are the locations we are knowledgeable about so that includes

Manchester, Liverpool, Chester, the Borderlands (Llangollen area), Snowdonia and Abersoch. We have visited every supplier, venue, hotel and apartment that we work with and have fabulous relationships with them all. What is your unique selling point? What makes us different to another hen or stag company in particular is that we have met with each and every one of our suppliers, many of whom are now great friends. Not only has this ensured we are working with the best venues and activity sites in the area but the relationships we have formed over time mean we know that our groups/clients will be very well looked after. North West and North Wales locations tend to get forgotten by national companies too.....not any more though! Why did you decide to set up the business? I made some lifestyle choices based on family and a passion for party planning. What skills did you have to influence your decision? I have strong sales background and had spent many years giving SME’s advice on advertising and marketing for an international plc. Many of these skills have transferred over to Mojito. I am combining these with a strong passion for event management and to party (is partying a skill????!!!!) What have you learnt along the way? I think people’s expectations these days are higher and also people want (rightly so) excellent value for money. By teaming up with the best venues, bars, restaurants, hotels and apartments etc in the area, it means Mojito can do both of these. Our packages give our customers amazing, exclusive packages and exceptional value for money. Anything exciting planned for the next year? Mojito is going from strength to strength. Our aim for the next 12 months is to continue building partnerships with hotels and apartments, continue to offer great packages at great value for money and to continue arranging memorable, exclusive and fabulous events for all our customers.
