Dessert buffets are not only tasty, but look great and are visually stimulating. However, they need to have an abundance of variety and colors, especially to appease to guests with varying palates.

I think that couples are becoming more and more savvy when it comes to the styling of their cake tables and are making much more of a feature of the cake. I think multiple cakes in varying heights will continue to be a trend as will setting your wedding cake at the centre of a sweet grazing table for a more rustic feel.

2020 is going to be all about how things are displayed and styled. It's not just about what guests are eating anymore; people want an experience. How desserts are displayed before they even enter a mouth matters. People want to be "wowed" and want something more than a slice of cake on a plate. People want to see desserts almost like decor; a focal point in a room that compliments the space around it. Desserts displayed with purpose and style makes an event feel seamless. Setting desserts on an 8ft table is easy; how the table flows with everything else is the trick. Or maybe it's not a table at all, maybe it's a wall that has desserts hanging from it so guests can pluck their sweet temptations vertically.

On the Rise

Breakfast is going to be Queen in 2020. We are having a lot of couples request treats like cinnamon rolls, doughnuts, and homemade pop-tarts. Maybe it's something nostalgic or maybe it's because those sweets are just delicious, but either way "brekki" treats are definitely trending.

With sharp lines and striking designs in mind we have recently launched new cake stands, spacers, separators and floating tiers, the reception we have received for these has been phenomenal and really set exciting foundations for cake designs of 2020

Chocolate! We are surrounded by chocolate truffles, wrapped chocolate, painted chocolate and marble chocolate

Hosts and guests are looking to have those enhanced experiences that will leave a lasting impression. A small wooden box to hold fresh baked cookies or chocolate truffles is good example of an elevated presentation and one we are currently using in our tasting lounge.

The range for traditional, customary sweets is endless. People are looking for desserts that represent their culture, country of origin or hometown. They will be looking for these items based on the season as well. Warm, inviting and comforting are the elements we all gravitate toward, and it seems that a delicious sweet treat is the best at delivering these things.

What's Out

Anthony Cuellar of Wente Vineyards Family Estates says...

The end of the naked cake trend is here. While they will still have a time and a place, they have been on steady decline for most of 2019 and will continue to do so in 2020.

The upside down wedding cakes and chandelier cakes added a fun touch as well, but unfortunately, their impact on the wedding scene for couples is decreasing. Think less of the outlandish style of cakes and sweets, and more of the traditional with a twist.

Megan Collins of Blossom & Crumb says...

I think that we will see fewer metallics in 2020. And I think naked cakes are finally gone but semi-naked cakes have moved into design classic territory and are still on the scene but with loser more interesting floral styling to reflect floristry trends.

Shelby Anderson of Footers Catering says...

I think cupcakes and cake pops are definitely dated and that we will see less and less of those. Our couples want something customizable to them and something that people haven't seen before. I think cake-based desserts are falling off, which will give way to treats like cinnamon rolls, doughnuts, fritters, french macarons, et c.
