Hidden Western Treasures at the Yellowstone County Museum A hidden treasure western history enthusiasts will delight in discovering, the Yellowstone County Museum has exhibits dedicated to ranch life, historic firearms, and one of the largest collections of American Indian artifacts in the region.

Western Room

Short-horned beef cattle were trailed into the Yellowstone River Valley from Idaho and Oregon by Edward Cardwell in 1879. Beef cattle production became a linchpin industry in Montana Territory once rail service opened access to eastern markets. A J.K. Ralston original mural, spanning the breadth of the room, is displayed above the Yellowstone County Museum’s authentic chuckwagon. It is a true-to-life depiction of the valley’s first settlers and the gear they carried with them. Ralston’s skillful hand shows the pilot wagon with its seasoned guide, chuckwagon, bed wagon, and finally the bawling, tail-twitching mass driven by outriders. Rodeo, ranch, and riding enthusiasts will marvel at the craftsmanship of the Connolly family - purveyors of Western wear, tack, and saddles in Billings since 1912. Several saddles are on display, and each one exhibits both utility and beauty in its own way.

American Indian Collection

A spacious room highlights the stories, art, apparel, and tools of the Yellowstone Valley’s earliest residents. With stunning quill- and beadwork filling the cases, the displays are considered some of the best of its kind in the state. New in 2017 is “Waiting for the Earth to Move,” the largest assemblage of Ghost Dance objects on display in the world. At a time of political and cultural turbulence, the 1890s Ghost Dance offered hope to the downtrodden tribes of the American Southwest and Plains. The evocative imagery of Ghost Dancers’ shirts and regalia captures both their pain and their anticipation of a better future. The Yellowstone County Museum is entered through the historic McCormick log cabin at 1950 Terminal Circle. Follow the roundabout into the airport and loop around the parking area until you reach the cabin on the right. Hours are 10:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Learn more at ycmhistory.org or call 406-256-6811. Free admission.

Little River Band

The Eagles founding member, the late Glenn Frey, knew what he was saying when he dubbed Little River Band “the best singing band in the world.” Through the ‘70s and ‘80s, LRB enjoyed huge chart success with multi-platinum albums and charttopping hits like: “Reminiscing,” “Cool Change,” “Lonesome Loser,” “The Night Owls,” “Take It Easy On Me,” “Help Is on Its Way,” “Happy Anniversary,” “We Two,” “Man On Your Mind,” “The Other Guy,” and “It’s A Long Way There.” A worldwide album, CD sales, and digital downloads now top 30 million and LRB has set a record for having had Top 10 hits for 6 consecutive years – In fact, they were the very first band to achieve that remarkable status. According to BMI, “Reminiscing” has garnered rare status with over 5 million airplays on American radio, and “Lady” follows with more than 4 million airplays. Love Letters

Nominated for the Pulitzer Prize, A.R. Gurney’s Love Letters tells the story of childhood friends Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner, both born to wealth and position, whose lifelong correspondence begins with birthday party thank-you notes and summer camp postcards. Michael Grossman and Meredith Baxter, best known as the parents from the 1980’s sitcom Family Ties, reunite to perform this two-person play. They continue to exchange letters through the boarding school and college years—where Andy goes on to excel at Yale and law school and Melissa flunks out of a series of “good schools.” While Andy is off at war Melissa marries, but her attachment to Andy remains strong and she continues to keep in touch as he marries, becomes a successful attorney, gets involved in politics and, eventually, is elected to the U.S. Senate. Meanwhile, her marriage in tatters, Melissa dabbles in art and gigolos, drinks more than she should, and becomes estranged from her children. Eventually, she and Andy do become involved in a brief affair, but it is really too late for both of them. However Andy’s last letter, written to her mother after Melissa’s untimely death, makes it eloquently clear how much they really meant, and gave, to each other over the years—physically apart, perhaps, but spiritually as close as only true lovers can be. Bareback Bronc Riding Bull Riding Cowgirl's Barrel Racing Saddle Bronc Riding Steer Wrestling Team Roping Tie Down Roping

MontanaFair made a major change in its rodeo programming in 2010. The programming switch to become a PRCA sanctioned rodeo has really paid off for the fans. The sanctioned rodeo attracts the very best cowboys in the world to ride in Billings August 16-18 at the Northern Hotel Grandstands. The calendar favors the rodeo. September is the final month cowboys can earn cash toward their positioning for the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo presented by Polaris in Las Vegas. Only the top 15 cowboys in bareback riding, steer wrestling, team roping (headers and heelers), saddle bronc riding, tie-down roping, WPRA barrel racing and bull riding events earn their way to Vegas. Standings are determined by cash won and cash is determined by the cowboy’s performance. The Cowboy Club at MontanaFair is one of the biggest reasons for the large purses. The members only club has donated nearly $200,000 collectively in prize money for the rodeo. The Cowboy Club is a group of local rodeo fans who love to see great rodeo. The support the club brings the Lithia RAM Trucks presents the Yellowstone River Roundup sponsored by Shipton’s Big R makes it possible for the high quality of rodeo you will see at MontanaFair. Membership to the club is open. The Yellowstone River Roundup Cowboy Club is the biggest sponsor of the event each year. With money being the focus, the Lithia RAM Trucks presents the Yellowstone River Roundup always attracts the best rodeo cowboys. The prize money is the magnet for these

competitors. Lithia RAM Trucks presents the Yellowstone River Roundup is one of the top 4 rodeos in prize money in the PRCA in Montana and has the biggest available purse heading into the Wrangler NFR. Sponsorship is always a big part of how the rodeo purses continue to grow in Billings. Support from the three Billings Shipton’s Big R locations as the rodeo’s primary sponsor, DISH Network, one of the nation’s top satellite programming providers, and Briggs Distributing, the local distributor of Miller/Coors products are essential to the rodeo. Shipton’s Big R always has a big part in the Yellowstone River Roundup. You’ll see the hands wearing bright red Shipton’s Big R vests. Shipton’s Big R also provides the prizes for guests during breaks in the rodeo action. You might be able to grab a Wrangler t-shirt fired into the stands from the grounds. Another favorite for the kids are the stick horses You can also save big at the rodeo with a Wrangler purchase at Shipton’s Big R. Check any of the three Billings locations for details on the offer. Coors is a major sponsor of PRCA rodeo and a major buyer of Montana grown barley. Each night of the event, the Downtown Billings Exchange Club will offer a featured Coors or Miller product for sale in the Northern Hotel Grandstands. DISH Network is the exclusive provider of satellite services to MontanaFair. You can find DISH Network products near the Maingate of the grounds. For the past several years, you can always find 7 or 8 of the top 10 all around cowboys in the world on our rodeo program. Rodeo performances begin each night at 7pm. Slack occurs each afternoon around 1pm. Slack is the rodeo equivalent of having too many performers and not enough time. The Lithia RAM Trucks presents the Yellowstone River Roundup will receive over 600 entries for performance slots in the night time go-rounds. That’s way too many cowboys and cowgirls for a 2-hour rodeo. The names at Slack are dependent on the draw from the PRCA which happens a few days before the event. One of the great enhancements MontanaFair has for the rodeo is the video scoreboard programming. The Singh Contracting scoreboard operation is a four-man job and includes two high definition cameras to bring the rodeo action directly to you. Rodeo is fast and it’s easy to miss something in real time. The slo-motion replays and up to the moment scoring keeps fans in the middle of the action. Lithia RAM Trucks presents the Yellowstone River Roundup. RAM is a major presenter of the PRCA across the country including the RAM National Circuit Finals Rodeo. Shipton’s Big R is the exclusive western store sponsor of the Yellowstone River Roundup as they have been since the inception in 2010. Rodeo ticket prices are $28 for premium seats, $25 for reserved seating. General admission to the rodeo is $18. Kids 12 and under have a special $14 general admission ticket. Fair admission is included with the purchase of a rodeo ticket. Tickets are online at MontanaFair.com, by phone at 800-3668538 or 406-252-2422, at the MetraPark Box Office.

ZooMontana The Surging, ZooMontana is a 70-acre wildlife Thundering Herd park located in Billings, Montana. The Yellowstone Art Museum announces the opening of a new exhibit entitled The Surging, Thundering Herd: Vintage Bison engravings, 1758-1910. These early artworks, drawn from the Lee Silliman Print Collection, are on a statewide tour under the aegis of the Montana Art Gallery Directors’ Association. The exhibit features a cornucopia of 51 original engravings depicting the iconic mammal of the American frontier West—the buffalo. The engravings, spanning 152 years of art, were created by European artists who never saw the animal (they copied shamelessly), and by artists who witnessed these massive beasts in the wild before their near extinction in the 1880s. The media include early copper plate engravings, wood engravings, chromolithographs, and early 1900s color lithographic postcards. Some images are beautifully handtinted. Many images were drawn from poplar 19th century American periodicals, such as Harper’s Weekly and Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper, as well as from other lesser known American and European publications. The prints are mounted in handsome hardwood frames and are annotated with historical commentary. Prominent frontier painters whose derivative prints are featured in the exhibit include Frederic Remington, George Catlin, and Karl Bodmer. Many aspects of the bison story are illuminated in this exhibit: the animal in its wild state amongst Frédéric Theodore Lix, Indiens des Prairies its natural enemies; techniques Chassant le Bison, 1892, chromolithograph. Photo courtesy of Lee Silliman. for hunting the bison by Native Americans and whites; the centrality of buffalo in Native American culture; and the nearly total extermination of the bison in the late 1800s. Images and commentary unite to paint the story. The exhibition is on view August 16 – October 14, 2018. In lieu of the museum’s usual opening reception, the public is invited to a lecture by Lee Silliman 6:30 – 7:30 p.m. Thursday, September 6th. Lee Silliman is a retired educator and museum employee living in Missoula, Montana. Since early childhood he has nurtured a strong interest in the art and history of the frontier American West. His interests have spawned many articles and the editing of five books. He has presented conference lectures, taught workshops, and led four educational group tours. Since 1988 Silliman has assembled and circulated numerous fine art exhibits which have been displayed in one hundred venues throughout Montana and ten other states. The exhibition and reception are free to museum members. The general public is encouraged to become members, but may also take advantage of all the museum’s exhibition offerings and other programs for a single admission fee. Check the museum’s website for more details, www.artmuseum.org.

As Montana’s only zoo and botanical park, they focus on wildlife native to Montana, the Rockies, and other cold temperature regions at or above the 45th Parallel. Indoor habitats include animals from around the world. Canyon Creek runs through the center of the zoo’s grounds, creating a natural and tranquil park-like setting.

Famous Engraving

A boardwalk leads to Captain Clark’s signature and to the top of the Pillar for a great view of the surrounding landscape. There are stationary binoculars on top for better viewing. Trails lead visitors past interpretive signs, a replica of Captain Clark’s canoes, and a view of the 670 mile-long Yellowstone River. These several miles of hiking trails are a great place for bird and wildlife viewing. The Friends of Pompeys Pillar, in conjunction with the Bureau of Land Management, hosts a Signature Event on July 25th commemorating the day Clark visited and signed the Pillar.

Riverwalk

The concrete Riverwalk, representing the Yellowstone River, begins in the parking lot and meanders through the interpretive center to the base of the Pillar. Signs along the path include quotes from Clark’s journals and tell the party’s experiences from their entry on the Yellowstone on July 15th, 1806, to their encampment at the confluence of the Yellowstone and Missouri Rivers on August 3rd.

Interpretive Center

The interpretive center offers various types of educational resources such as interactive displays and a movie theater. A junior ranger program is also provided by the Bureau of Land Management.

The Friends of Pompeys Pillar

The Friends of Pompeys Pillar is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit established in 1989 to support Pompeys Pillar National Monument, which contains the last physical evidence of the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1803-1806. Their mission is to preserve and protect the monument by educating visitors through interpretation, special projects, and support the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) in its management of the site. The efforts of the Friends group was a driving force to get the site into the public lands domain, which resulted in the purchase of the historical land from the Foote family by the BLM in 1991. By working cooperatively with the BLM in the planning and administration of the site, the Friends group successfully accomplishes this mission.

Indians in check and protect the white men who were rapidly occupying the land. Fort Custer, where 500 to 700 men were stationed, became known as the finest cavalry post in the world. Nothing remains of the fort today. In 1930 a monument was placed on site by the Daughters of the American Revolution. The monument was moved to the Big Horn County Museum in 2016. One of the main attractions in the museum gallery is the Fort Custer exhibit. The exhibit includes: the Fort Custer Stage Coach, uniforms, weapons, artifacts, photographs and a scale model of the fort.

Hardin, 15 miles west of Little Bighorn (Custer) Battlefield, is situated on the banks of the Bighorn River. The town is surrounded by productive ranches and farms, and the area is 87 S. rich U. in history. d Ol Founded in 1907, Hardin is the youngest and largest town in Big Horn County and serves as the county seat. Hardin was named after Samuel H. Hardin, a cattleman who came to this territory from Texas.

Big Horn County

Big Horn County was established on January 13, 1913. The county is 5,025 sq. miles, equaling 3,250,000 acres, which includes the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservations. The courthouse was built in 1937 with the help of the WPA (Work Progress Administration).

Bozeman Trail & Fort C. F. Smith

The Bozeman Trail, used by immigrants from 1863-1866 in search of gold, crosses through the southwest corner of Big Horn County. Markers are placed along the trail and can be seen from various state and county roads. Fort C. F. Smith, Montana’s second military post, was established by the U.S. Army in August 1866 along the Bozeman Trail to protect immigrants. No evidence of the site remains.

Little Bighorn Battlefield

On June 25, 1876 the Battle of the Little Bighorn, one of the last efforts of the Northern 7 Plains Indians to preserve their ancestral way of life, took place approximately 15 miles south of what is now Hardin, ONE STOP Montana.

Big Horn County Historical Museum and State Visitor Center is easily accessible off Interstate 90, or Exit 495 through downtown Hardin. The museum is located on a 35-acre site, once a flourishing vegetable farm that includes the original farmhouse and barn. Through the years 26 authentic historic structures from throughout the county have been moved to the site and restored. Each building features exhibits that represent that era. Along with the historic buildings, three structures were built on site to provide exhibit space for the horse drawn equipment, extensive collection of restored tractors and farm equipment, and a main exhibit building that serves as a visitor center, office and gift shop. Recent restoration projects include the Will James studio and a homestead house. This living storybook of early Montana shows the diversity of items that were used by early-day settlers. A new 13,690 sq. ft. museum building opened in 2012. The new facility provides a climate controlled environment, a large gallery and proper archival space, a multi-media/educational room, a larger gift shop, and expanded restrooms. You feel as if you are walking down the historic street of Big Horn County’s early years. Whether you are looking for local, regional or state information, the museum’s friendly visitor center staff is eager to provide brochures and to assist with directions. Enjoy the gift shop and interpretive exhibits 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily May-Sept., 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday Oct.-April. Admission is $Adult- $6, Seniors-$5, Student & Active Military $3, and 6 & under is free. For information about the museum and the area call 406-6651671 or visit BigHornCountyMuseum.org.

Crow Agency The Crow Reservation, covering about 2,500,000 acres in Big Horn County, encompasses Lodge Grass, St. Xavier, Crow Agency, Pryor and Fort Smith. Crow Agency has a hospital designed with unique Indian architecture. The Crow tribe has its own government. Rosebud Battle was a foreshadowing to the Battle of the Little Bighorn. The Battle of the Rosebud symbolizes the Indians’ first stiff resistance in the Sioux War of 1876. Its outcome had an impact on Lt. Col. George A. Custer’s devastating defeat on the Little Bighorn only a week later. The June 17, 1876, battle between the Sioux and Cheyenne Indians and General George Crook’s cavalry and infantry was one of the

largest Indian battles ever waged in the United States. It set the stage for the Indian victory eight days later when Lt. Col. George A. Custer and his immediate command were wiped out on the Little Bighorn. A self-guided tour with interpretive signs is managed by Montana State Parks. (25 miles east of Crow Agency on U.S. 212, then 20 miles south on Secondary 314, then 1.5 miles west on county road) In June 2010, the site was designated as a National Historic Landmark. There is no charge for entrance. Camping is not allowed.

The 100th Annual Crow Fair Celebration Powwow & Rodeo will be at Crow Agency on August 15-20, 2018 at Crow Agency, Montana, includes parades, a four-day powwow, a rodeo and horse races. The Crow Fair Celebration is the largest Native American event in Montana, and one of the biggest powwows in the country. Held each year in Crow Agency, Montana by The Apsáalooke people of the Crow Indian Reservation just South of Hardin, Montana. Also known as the “Tipi Capital of the world”, Crow Fair begins on the third Thursday in August and attracts more than 50,000 spectators and participants from the around the world.

Crow Fair Pow Wow

Crow Fair Celebration

Crow Fair Morning Parade

Besides the pow-wow, there are many other attractions. Each year the fair holds a parade, which winds its way through the campsites. A large number of women on horseback using old-style saddles (many family heirlooms) of bone and rawhide, ride in the parade. The parade begins each morning of the Fair at ten o’clock. The Color Guard leads the parade with retired veterans and active members of the armed services. Following the Color Guard are the President, Vice-President, and First Vice-President of the Crow Fair. The President carries the American Flag. In the past, the royalty of the Crow Nation would follow the Presidents; however, in modern parades the Crow Tribal Officials replace Crow royalty. The parade includes contests for best traditional dress in more than half a dozen categories. Riders on horseback were followed by elaborately decorated cars, trucks and trailers. Some of the vehicles are decorated in memorial to tribal elders who have passed during the prior year. Others carry multiple generations from elders to newborns. Princesses, ranging in age from preschool to 18, ride along the route, on horseback or by vehicle, wearing traditional, elaborate dress with perfect, modest poise.

The Crow Fair Pow Wow is much like pow wows throughout the west, except for more emphasis on traditional dance styles. You can pick out [the Crow tribe’s style] from hundreds of dancers because the dress ways are the same as the turn of the last century. The only additions are material things to decorate their regalia. The pow wow grand entry begins at 1 p.m. sharp. It is led by the veteran honor guard, followed by all the dancers who will participate in the contests that have been held throughout the week. The announcer introduces competing drum groups that surround the arbor, each taking a turn keeping the beat. In addition to the Crow people, members of other tribes come to dance and sing and sell their goods on the midway that surrounds the arbor. Dance contests, with substantial prize money, are held throughout the week with participants ranging in age from preschool to elders.

Crow Fair Rodeo

The Crow Fair Rodeo is sponsored annually by the Crow Nation. The rodeo is a daily feature at the Crow Fair, offering a full day’s entertainment of youth events, professional Indian cowboys and cowgirls, and horse racing. Rodeos occur throughout the United States, through the various rodeo associations like the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association. The Northern Plains Indian Rodeo Association, organized under the Indian National Finals Rodeo, is the current association that sanctions the rodeo event. The Rodeo is held at the Edison Real Bird Memorial Complex, in Crow Agency, Montana. The rodeo arena, race track, stables, and campgrounds are all part of this complex. Mark your calendar today so you don’t miss the next Crow Fair Celebration Powwow & Rodeo at Crow Agency in August.

Northern-Cheyenne, Busby, Lame Deer and Ashland Loop Busby

Just off Highway 212 at Busby is a monument to Two Moon, a Northern Cheyenne Chief who took part in the Battle of the Little Bighorn. Convinced that he could not run from the army forever, he surrendered his band to General Miles at Fort Keogh (Miles City) and they remained there until the Tongue River Reservation was established in 1884. The monument was built in 1936 by an Indian trader, Moncure. In 1993 a historic reburial was held in Busby, bringing home the remains of 10 men, five women, and two children who had died about 116 years before, during the Indian Wars. The remains had been in the possession of museums at Harvard’s Peabody Museum, the National Museum of Health and Medicine and at the Smithsonian Institution’s Museum of Natural History. The remains are buried in a circle near the Two Moon Monument on Highway 212. The “museum burials” were the result of an 1880s Army directive ordering military surgeons to collect the skeletal remains of Indians killed in battle in order to gauge the ballistic effectiveness of new Army carbines and to study Indian subcultures. A federal law was passed in 1990 that allowed the return of the bones to their homelands for burial.

Lame Deer

Lame Deer is headquarters for the Northern Cheyenne Tribe and the site of the offices of the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Also at Lame Deer are the Dull Knife Memorial College and Dull Knife Memorial Library. Lame Deer is the site of the Northern Cheyenne Annual 4th of July Pow Wow. Gourd dancing is held daily, and rations and feasting are always part of the festivities. The Northern Cheyenne Reservation extends from the Crow Reservation eastward to the Tongue River. The Morning Star design is the official emblem of the Northern Cheyenne Tribe. For the Cheyennes, the Morning Star “lights the morning sky and shines more brightly than the other stars.” It has a different color. The Cheyennes often pray when they see this star early in the morning sky. It has its own name in the Cheyenne language: Wohehiv.

Ashland

Ashland is located on Highway 212 “The Warrior Trail.” The St. Labre Indian School at Ashland celebrates over 129 years of education, social programs, college scholarships and much more. St. Labre

Founded in 1884 to serve the Northern Cheyenne Indians, St. Labre is located in the beautiful and historic Tongue River Valley, bounded by the Tongue River and the scenic Custer National Forest, filled with traces of early Indian days.

Welcome! Visitor’s Guide – 17

In 1883, a soldier, Private George Yoakam, stationed at Fort Keogh near Miles City, recognized the hard times experienced by the Northern Cheyennes. He contacted Bishop Brondel and told him of the Indian people who were roaming the Tongue River Valley without homes or land. Land was subsequently purchased by the bishop and, on March 29, 1884, St. Labre Indian School became a reality. Four Ursuline Sisters from Toledo, Ohio, responded to the bishop’s requests for priests and nuns. St. Labre Indian School made a humble beginning with the construction of a log cabin school operated by the Sisters. This three-room cabin served as residence, school and dormitory, as well as the church. A replica of the cabin now stands on the site of the original mission. Today St. Labre provides pre-school to grade 12 education to Native children at three locations on the Northern Cheyenne and Crow Indian reservations. St. Labre depends almost entirely on private donations for its many programs. Without federal or church funds, many friends all over the United States “keep the miracle alive.” Visitors to this facility will enjoy seeing the unique teepeestyle church and Cheyenne Indian Museum with its large collection of Native American artifacts and art from the Northern Cheyenne, Crow, Sioux and several other tribes.

That’s what you get when you take a mother and daughter who describe themselves as “a couple of country gals who always loved sewing.” You’ll shop and sew in the midst of chatter and laughter. Their way of making quilting as fun for you as it is for them includes offering classes (one day or a series), helping you with fabric selections and quilting techniques, and offering open sewing times. Here for an extended stay? Come in and quilt! They have a huge selection of quilting supplies and sell finished quilts, too. They have masculine, Western and other theme favorites also. Judy Niemeyer Certified Shop, Batiks, and Anita Godesign Embroidery Cards. Brother and Nolting Long Arm Dealer, sewing machine repairs and antique sewing machine sales round out their offerings. Open Mon.-Sat. 9 a.m.-6 p.m. 406-6551001.
