Smûk. Zo beschrijven de Friezen de hoofdstad van Fryslân. Gezellig en mooi. Leeuwarden was niet voor niets de Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa in 2018. Hier komt cultuur, gastvrijheid en gezelligheid samen. Het jaar van Culturele Hoofdstad heeft ons natuurlijk op de kaart gezet, want wie kent nu niet De Reuzen van Royal de Luxe? Leeuwarden is de afgelopen jaren dan ook uitgegroeid van een kleine, onontdekte stad tot een bloeiende toeristenstad. Wat de stad zo leuk maakt, is dat het niet te druk en te groot is qua omvang, maar dat je wel hele leuke, unieke dingen kunt ondernemen. Zo kun je de stad ontdekken vanaf het water. Dan denk je waarschijnlijk al snel aan een bootje, maar suppen is sinds vorig jaar een populaire activiteit geworden voor bezoekers. Zo ontdek je, terwijl je op je supboard staat of zit, al peddelend de stad!

Leeuwarden was European Capital of Culture in 2018 for good reason, as it’s here where culture, hospitality and warmth meet. The year of being Cultural Capital put Leeuwarden firmly on the map – after all who has now not heard of the Royal de Luxe giants? Over the years Leeuwarden has grown from a small, undiscovered city into a flourishing tourist attraction. What makes our city so great is that it’s neither too big nor too crowded and yet offers so much that is interesting and unique, for example, discovering the city from the water. Welkom in Leeuwarden Ook in 2020 heeft de stad, ondanks corona, veel bezoekers getrokken uit zowel binnenals buitenland. De stad biedt interessante musea, een mooie historische binnenstad met monumenten en grachten en ook bijzondere moderne architectuur. In het centrum kun je een lekker dagje shoppen; in elk straatje ontdek je wel weer een leuk winkeltje. De diversiteit aan horecagelegenheden heeft voor elke fijnproever een goede hap. Probeer eens het Friese Suikerbrood (Sûkerbôle)! Een typisch Fries product, net zoals Beerenburg en Nagelkaas. Veel (horeca)ondernemers in de stad maken gebruik van streekproducten. Zo zou het zomaar kunnen dat het biertje dat je drinkt hier in de regio gebrouwen is! Naast de gerechten onderscheidt de provincie zich door de taal, het Fries. DE GESCHIEDENIS VAN LEEUWARDEN In Leeuwarden wonen bijzondere mensen. Nu, maar ook vroeger. Kijk maar naar de manier waarop deze stad is ontstaan. In de negende eeuw lag Leeuwarden aan de Middelzee. Dat was een strategische plaats, want zo konden we via zee handelen tot in Rusland. Maar we hadden toen nog geen dijken en de eerste bewoners kregen regelmatig natte voeten. Wat we deden? We maakten een heuvel en bouwden daar huizen op (een terp). Probleem opgelost. Toen de Middelzee in de 13de eeuw dichtslibde

stonden de vroege Leeuwarders voor een nieuwe uitdaging. Maar ook nu werd er snel geschakeld: in plaats van handel via zee gingen we gewoon handelen in de regio. Intussen woonden de mensen nog wel op de drie terpen die eerder waren gebouwd. Niet zo handig. Daarom werden de terpen, Oldehove, Nijehove en Hoek in 1435 samengevoegd tot één stad. Hiermee kreeg Leeuwarden, als een van de laatste steden in Friesland, officieel stadsrechten.

THE HISTORY OF LEEUWARDEN Leeuwarden has extraordinary citizens. Both now, and formerly. Let’s look at how this city came into being. In the 9th century Leeuwarden lay on the Middelzee (Middle Sea) – a strategic place from which we could trade by sea as far as Russia. But back then we had no dykes, so early inhabitants often got their feet wet. So what did we do? Constructed a mound and built houses on it (a ‘terp’). Problem solved for now. Then when the Middelzee silted up in the thirteenth century this

presented early Leeuwarders with a new challenge. But a quick shift in thinking resolved this: instead of trading by sea, we started trading within the region, and for the time being people carried on living on the three ‘terpen’ (mounds) that had been constructed earlier. However, this wasn’t actually very practical and so the three mounds were consolidated and in 1435 a city came into being, giving Leeuwarden, one of the newest cities in Friesland, official city status.

DE GESCHIEDENIS VAN LEEUWARDEN Leeuwarden werd in 1504 uitgeroepen tot hoofdstad van de provincie Friesland. De stad kende een gouden tijd in de zestiende en zeventiende eeuw. De Nassaus werden stadhouder van de Noordelijke provincies van Nederland en kwamen te wonen in het Stadhouderlijk hof in Leeuwarden. Leeuwarden werd een rijke en machtige stad en behoorde in die tijd tot de tien meest aanzienlijkste steden van Nederland! Natuurlijk hoorde hier een grote kerk bij met een hoge toren.

In 1529 werd begonnen met de bouw van de toren, de Oldehove. Een kerk stond er al. Maar na tien meter bleek de toren al te verzakken. Gewoon recht verder bouwen, dan komt het wel goed. Nee dus. De bouw werd niet afgemaakt. Onze Oldehove staat niet alleen scheef, maar is ook nog krom en heeft geen spits. Toch houden Leeuwarders, bijzonder als ze zijn, zoveel van deze toren dat ze hem nog geen dag kunnen missen.

THE HISTORY OF LEEUWARDEN In 1504 Leeuwarden was declared the capital city of the province of Friesland. The city experienced a golden age in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. The Nassaus became Stadtholder (effectively Regent) of the Northern Dutch provinces and came to live in the royal residence in Leeuwarden. Leeuwarden became a rich and powerful city, being, in those days, one of the ten most important cities in the Netherlands! Naturally this called for a large church with a high

tower and in 1529 construction of the Oldehove tower was begun (a church being already in existence). But at just 10 metres high, the tower began to show signs of collapse. At first construction continued optimistically, but it was soon evident that the situation was hopeless, and the building was never finished. Our Oldehove is not just leaning, it’s also crooked and has no spire. In spite of this, Leeuwarden’s extraordinary citizens love their tower and wouldn’t be without it.

DE GESCHIEDENIS VAN LEEUWARDEN In de negentiende eeuw werd er voor het eerst buiten de stadsgrachten van Leeuwarden gebouwd en ontstonden volledige wijken. Leeuwarden werd in deze tijd steeds meer gezien als centrum van de regio en eigenlijk is dat tot op de dag van vandaag hetzelfde gebleven. Inwoners van kleinere steden en dorpen in Friesland zoeken regelmatig het centrum van Leeuwarden op voor een leuk dagje uit, een middagje winkelen of een goed restaurant. Hoewel het belang van Leeuwarden

in de tweede helft van de negentiende eeuw voor de regio en provincie toenam, werd de stad vanaf die tijd landelijk gezien minder betekenisvol. Door de eeuwen heen heeft Leeuwarden ook een aantal (wereld)beroemdheden voortgebracht. Zo kun je denken aan de schrijvers Francois Haverschmidt, Simon Vestdijk en Jan Jacob Slauerhoff, politicus en dichter Piter Jelles Troelstra, danseres en spionne Mata Hari en kunstenaars Hans Vredeman de Vries en Maurits Cornelis Escher.

THE HISTORY OF LEEUWARDEN In the nineteenth century building outside of the city canals was begun and entire neighbourhoods came into being. Leeuwarden became increasingly regarded as the heart of the region, a situation that continues today. People regularly come from smaller cities and towns in Friesland to the hub of Leeuwarden for a day trip, an afternoon’s shopping or an enjoyable meal out. Although Leeuwarden’s importance to the province and region

increased in the second half of the nineteenth century, it was seen as less meaningful nationally. Through the centuries Leeuwarden has also produced a number of (world) famous people. Think of the writers Francois Haverschmidt, Simon Vestdijk and Jan Jacob Slauerhoff, politician and poet Piter Jelles Troelstra, dancer and spy Mata Hari, and artists Hans Vredeman de Vries and Maurits Cornelis Escher.

TERUGBLIK LEEUWARDEN DE REUZEN In 2018 was Leeuwarden Culturele Hoofdstad van Europa. Tienduizenden cultuurliefhebbers laten zich verbazen, verwonderen en ontroeren door de levensechte poppen van theatergezelschap Royal de Luxe (De Reuzen). ‘Magisch’, is dan ook het woord wat de meeste bezoekers van Leeuwarden gebruiken om het bijzondere weekend van 17 tot en met 19 augustus te beschrijven. Een topweekend, met 430.000 bezoekers. DOMINO DAY Tot 2009 werd in Leeuwarden Domino Day gehouden, een Guinness Book of Records recordpoging voor het grootst aantal vallende dominostenen. Tot nu toe staat het record nog steeds op naam van de Nederlandse bouwers. ELFSTEDENTOCHT Leeuwarden is het begin en eindpunt van de heroïsche Elfstedentocht, de bijna tweehonderd kilometer lange schaatstocht op natuurijs. De tocht brengt zomaar anderhalf tot twee miljoen mensen op de been. De Elfstedentocht voert langs alle Friese steden. Nu maar hopen dat het een keer koud genoeg wordt en ‘De Tocht der Tochten’ nog een keer komt. De laatste keer was in 1997. stadsgids | city guide Leeuwarden

LEEUWARDEN RETROSPECT THE GIANTS In 2018 Leeuwarden was the Cultural Capital of Europe. Hundreds of thousands of culture vultures came to be amazed, to admire and be moved by the lifelike puppets of the Royal de Luxe theatre company (the Giants). Described by most of the visitors to Leeuwarden as ‘magical’, the extraordinary weekend of 17-19 August attracted 430,000 visitors. DOMINO DAY Until 2009 Domino Day was held in Leeuwarden, a Guinness Book of Records event for the greatest number of falling dominoes. The record is still held by the Dutch contestants. ELEVEN CITIES RACE Leeuwarden is the start and finish of the heroic Eleven Cities Race, an almost 200 kilometre skating race on natural ice. The event attracts one and a half to two million spectators and takes you to all the Frisian cities: Leeuwarden, Sneek, IJlst, Sloten, Stavoren, Hindeloopen, Workum, Bolsward, Harlingen, Franeker and Dokkum. Now we have to hope that it will once again be cold enough for ‘The Race’.

TERUGBLIK LEEUWARDEN CARABOSSE Vorig jaar stond de binnenstad van Leeuwarden drie dagen lang in vuur en vlam door het Franse straattheater Compagnie Carabosse. Op verschillende locaties zijn indrukkende vuurshows te bewonderen die met elkaar verbonden worden door een prachtige wandelroute waar in totaal maar liefst veertigduizend vuurpotten aan te pas komen. Het evenement is een groot succes te noemen met een bezoekersaantal van 120.000. LUCHTMACHTDAGEN Tijdens de Luchtmachtdagen komen 280.000 enthousiastelingen zich vergapen aan straaljagers en vliegdemonstraties. Er zijn dan demonstraties te zien met Nederlandse en buitenlandse toestellen. SERIOUS REQUEST Tijdens 3FM Serious Request in 2013 werd onze mooie stad overspoeld door een tsunami aan gasten. Allemaal willen ze een blik werpen op de drie dj’s die zich voor het goede doel vrijwillig laten opsluiten in het glazen huis. Met een opbrengst van meer dan twee miljoen euro is de actie een groot succes.

LEEUWARDEN RETROSPECT CARABOSSE For three days last year Leeuwarden’s city centre was set ablaze in fire and flame by the French street theatre company, Carabosse. Stunning displays of fire were to be seen at various locations throughout the centre, linked by a stunning walking route, lined with the dazzling spectacle of more than forty thousand blazing beakers of fire. With a total of 120,000 visitors, this event was considered an enormous success AIR FORCE EXHIBITION For the duration of Leeuwarden’s Air Force Exhibition, some 280,000 enthusiasts came to marvel at jet fighters and aerobatics displays. There were demonstrations by both Dutch and foreign aircraft. SERIOUS REQUEST During the 3FM Serious Request event in 2013, Leeuwarden was flooded by a tsunami of visitors, who had all come to see the three DJ’s who had volunteered to be locked up in the Glass House to raise money for charity. This event was an enormous success, raising an amount of more than 2 million euros.

Je beklimt 183 oeroude traptreden om boven te komen. Wil je nog een stapje verder gaan? Beklim dan de Achmeatoren, deze toren is maar liefst 114 meter hoog! Vanuit de Panoramazaal kun je soms zelfs de Waddeneilanden zien liggen.

You climb 183 ancient stairs to reach the top. Want to take it even one step further? Climb the Achmea tower, a tower around 114 meters! You can sometimes even see the Wadden islands trom the panorama room.

Meer weten over de Friese cultuur? Aan de hand van uiteenlopende tentoonstellingen komen de cultuur en geschiedenis van Fryslân tot leven in het Fries Museum. Hier vind je het zwaard van vrijheidsstrijder Grutte Pier, het danskostuum van de mogelijke dubbelspionne Mata Hari en de mooiste kunstwerken uit Fryslân.

Een Elfstedentocht over het ijs is een steeds grotere zeldzaamheid: de schaatstocht van bijna 200 kilometer over 1 natuurijs is voor het laatst in 1997 gereden. Praktisch als de Friezen zijn maken ze dan gewoon een nieuwe Elfstedentocht. Niet verbonden door ijs, maar door het sprankelende water van fonteinen.

Het centrum van Leeuwarden moet je vanaf de gracht gezien hebben. De mooie gevels komen op deze manier het best tot hun recht. Vaar mee in een praam, dan word je meteen geïnformeerd over de vele monumenten aan de route. Een (elektrische) sloep huren is ook een optie!

Er is volop bedrijvigheid in de gevangenis. Naast de bibliotheek, zijn er twee restaurants en worden er veel evenementen georganiseerd. In de zomer is er bijvoorbeeld een foodtruckfestival, later is er een fair.

Want to learn more about Frisian culture? Frisian culture and history come alive through diverse exhibitions in the Frisian Museum. Here you can find the sword of freedom fighter ‘Grutte Pier; the costumes of spy and sensual dancer Mata Hari and the finest art from Friesland.

An Elfstedentocht over the ice is increasingly a rarity; the skating race of almost 200 kilometers over natural ice was last held in 1997. Practical as the Frisians are, they simply created a new Elfstedentocht. Not connected by ice, but by the sparkling waters of fountains.

You must not miss out on seeing Leeuwarden’s centre from its canals. The beautiful facades look their best this way. Take a trip on a ‘praam’ and you will be told about the route’s many monuments as you travel. It is also possible to rent a little electric boat!

There is plenty of activity in the old prison. In addition to the library, there are two restaurants and many events are organized. In the summer there is, for example, a food truck festival, and later on there is a fair.

Grutterswinkel

In 2019 opent het Natuurmuseum Fryslân de OnderWaterSafari. De OnderWaterSafari is een educatieve attractie waarbij je onder de waterspiegel duikt en toch droge voeten houdt. Je maakt hier een reis van het zoete water van sloot en plas naar het zoute water van Werelderfgoed de Waddenzee.

In de goede oude tijd waren supermarkten kleine knusse grutterswinkeltjes waar de kassa echt rinkelde en kruidenierswaren in papieren puntzakken over de toonbank gingen. In hartje Leeuwarden bestaat nog zo’n authentiek kruideniers-winkeltje. De grutterswinkel is een museum, maar ook nog steeds een beetje winkel.

In 2019 the Natuurmuseum Fryslân opened its OnderWaterSafari. The OnderWaterSafari is an educational attraction where you dive under the water level but still keep your feet dry. You’ll go on a trip from the fresh water of ditches and puddles to the salt water of World Heritage site, the Wadden Sea.

In the good old days, supermarkets were still small cozy grocery shops where the cash register still rang and groceries were still sold in paper bags. In the heart of Leeuwarden you can still find such an authentic grocery store. This grocer’s shop is now a museum but also still a bit of a store.

Stichting Praamvaren Leeuwarden De Stichting Praamvaren Leeuwarden verzorgt elk jaar weer leuke en interessante rondvaarten door Leeuwarden en wordt gerund door ruim tachtig vrijwilligers. Miniature People Leeuwarden De kleinste speurtocht van Leeuwarden. Leuk voor je kinderen, maar ook voor jezelf. Overal in de binnenstad staan heel kleine mensjes die van alles aan het doen zijn. Bijvoorbeeld een krantje lezen op een bankje, bergbeklimmen... eigenlijk alles wat grote mensen ook doen. Het is een idee van Michel Tilma, begonnen in 2019, toen hij de kleine poppetjes overal neerzette om te fotograferen. Het zijn kleine mensjes van een centimeter lang dus je moet goed kijken wil je ze zien. Daarom is er een speciale routekaart waarop je alle locaties kunt vinden.

Nu zit er het Alibi Hostel, Drink & Eet Lokaal Proefverlof, bibliotheek dbieb en Cellenblok H, waar allemaal creatieve mensen met eigen winkeltjes zitten.

This district also comprises the Blokhuispoort, located on Blokhuisplein. For 180 years the Blokhuispoort was a prison, the last prisoner leaving in 2007. Winkelgebied de Oude Markten ligt in het hart van Leeuwarden. In dit winkelgebied liggen de straten Naauw, Peperstraat, Berlikumermarkt, Groentemarkt, Kelders en Over de Kelders. Hier zitten ook een aantal leuke speciaalzaken, zoals De 3de Kamer. Ook kun je in restaurant Onder de Kelders even een lekker hapje eten. Hier zit je tussen de grachten in, een hele leuke ervaring. Wist je trouwens ook dat de winkelstraat Kelders een historische winkelstraat is? Vroeger vond hier de handel plaats en kwamen er vele reizigers en muzikanten. Aan de Bierkade werden geloste goederen onder de openbare weg door naar de panden gebracht. De straat dankt zijn naam aan het feit dat er voornamelijk werd gehandeld in bier. De naam Kelders is afgeleid van de werfkelders in de gracht. Tegenover Kelders zit de straat Over de Kelders.

DE VOORSTREEK Een verrassende mix

Op de Voorstreek zijn geen grote winkelketens. Wel zitten hier een aantal speciaalzaken. Je kunt denken aan fietsenzaken, platenzaken, winkels voor muziekinstrumenten en ga zo maar door. Op de Voorstreek staat het pand van de Centraal Apotheek, een rijksmonument. Wat niet te missen is, is de populaire ijssalon La Venezia. Hier staan Friezen maar al te graag in de rij voor lekker Italiaans ijs. Vroeger stond aan de Voorstreek het Camminga-huis dat later het Amelandshuis genoemd werd. Helaas is dit pand verloren gegaan door brandstichting. Ook stonden in deze straat het voormalige Sint Bonifatius Hospitaal en het Diaconessenhuis. Beide ziekenhuizen werden later samengevoegd tot het Medisch Centrum Leeuwarden. De Voorstreek heeft een oostzijde en een westzijde en kreeg pas de naam Voorstreek in 1845. Aan de hand van de bruggen werden de delen van beide zijden benoemd. Zo kwam aan de oostzijde, als eerst van zuid naar noord de SintFranciscuspijp, genoemd naar het franciscanenklooster.

A surprising mix

De Voorstreek has no big chain stores, but a number of specialist shops. Think of bike shops, record stores, musical instruments… and so on. The Centraal Apotheek (central pharmacy), a national monument building, can be found on de Voorstreek. And you mustn’t miss the popular ice-cream salon, La Venezia, where Frisians wait in line all too happily for delicious Italian ice-cream. In earlier days the Camminga-huis, later renamed het Amelandshuis, stood on de Voorstreek, but this building was unfortunately lost to fire. Two erstwhile hospitals, Sint Bonifatius and het Diaconessenhuis (Deaconess House) also stood here. They were later amalgamated, giving birth to the MCL (Medical Centre Leeuwarden). De Voorstreek has an east side and a west side and only gained the name Voorstreek in 1845. The sections of each side were named after the bridges, so on the east side, running from south to north, we had the Sint-Franciscuspijp, named after the Franciscan Monastery.

DE KLEINE KERKSTRAAT Leukste winkelstraat!

Loveliest shopping street!

De naam ‘Kerkstraat’ relateert aan de kerk Sint-Vitus, die in de jaren 1595 en 1596 werd afgebroken nadat de kerk door een zware storm in 1570 en 1576 was geraakt, en plannen voor een uitbreiding stillegde. De naam ‘Kleine’ contrasteert met Grote van de Grote Kerkstraat. Maar de Kleine Kerkstraat heette niet altijd zo. Eerst heette de straat Schotstraat. Deze naam werd voor het eerst vermeld in 1425 voordat het in 1540 voorkwam als de Schotstraete. In 1556 werd het in den Cleynen Kerckstraet genoemd.

The name ‘Kerkstraat’ derives from the Sint-Vitus church, which was demolished in 1595 and 1596 after it was hit by storms in 1570 and 1576, which halted plans for an extension. The name ‘Kleine’ (little) contrasts with the ‘Grote’ (great) of De Grote Kerkstraat. However, the Kleine Kerkstraat wasn’t always so named. It was originally called Schotstraat, which it was first named in 1425, after which it was changed to Schotstraete in 1540. In 1556 the name was changed to Den Cleynen Kerckstraet.
