E D ITO R’S N OT E
E D I T O R ’S N OT E Autumn - a time to fall back from our outer targets and shift the goal towards a state of deep inner rest. To rest is not self-indulgent. It is to give the best of ourselves and – perhaps most importantly – to arrive at a place where we are able to realise what we’ve already been given. To rest is not about stopping or giving up, but rather about slowly coming home, unharried and uncoerced. We are closest to our authentic selves when we are most rested. Ready for but not held hostage by the world. We can be rested when climbing a mountain, preparing a meal for friends, or surrounded by the chaos of a loving family at home. When rested, we simply care again for the right things and the right people in the right way. In rest, we re-establish the goals that make us more generous, more courageous, and more like someone others might want to remember. May this edition of our magazine aid you in finding your own particular form of refuge and rest this autumn.

There are many reasons why collagen is the new buzzword on the block. Improved skin elasticity, strengthened hair and nails, increased bone density and flexibility are all personal reviews I’ve heard from people taking the wonder supplement in its many forms. Just when I thought I’d tried the best in the market, I discovered SOLAL’s Collagen Plus, and it’s been a total game-changer. Composed of omega 3, vitamin E, astaxanthin (a natural antioxidant) and zinc, it offers true nourishment from within. What’s more, the innovative capsule-in-a-capsule (concentrated powder nutrients within a liquid nutrient capsule) technology makes it even more effective in restoring energy, improving immune function, and assisting with my muscle soreness and – sigh – ageing skin.
MUSHROOM MAGIC
Five years ago, I didn’t think I’d have mushroom for fungi in my supplement cabinet. Since then, research into the complex life of this super species has proven to be unbelievably promising for human health. I’m currently taking Sfera’s Advanced Mycology Series, which blends cordyceps, lion’s mane, maitake, reishi and shiitake mushrooms to support immune function and overall wellbeing. Their naturally occurring antiviral and immune-enhancing qualities have huge pharmacological potential, including reducing respiratory viruses and inhibiting influenza (a combination of maitake and reishi is particularly noted for this). Shiitake mushrooms show significant benefits in reducing malignant cell growth, such as in the case of immuno-viruses like cold sores. As for cordyceps – the ‘cure-all’ fungi encompasses it all! Benefits include enhanced oxygen flow, augmented memory, improved lung health, increased libido and decreased inflammation. Finally, mushrooms are having their moment.

Ok…ja. So I really love this stuff. Not only is the OKJA brand proudly South African, but it is also tasty, healthy and plantbased. The Oat Drink offers a subtly nutty flavour, and its ingredients are blended in a way that maintains a m*lky integrity without the oily separation (or glyphosate residue). As for their Just Now Cacao Oat Drink… This gem blends mouth-wateringly rich chocolatey goodness with a subtly salty flavour for a perfectly balanced guilt-free treat. Foam it up, shake it up, or simply sip it out.
S I M P LY S E N S AT I O N A L SKINCARE
Did you know that common afflictions like acne and eczema were non-existent in huntergatherer communities? In an effort to return to the simplicity of these times and ‘be natural again’, Esse has created their Rewilding skincare range. Unwaveringly sustainable and wildly restorative, it’s a wonderful way to restore the skin’s natural biome after years of stripping away at it with chemical facial care products. The range includes an all-you-need set of travel-sized products to promote the probiotic integrity of your skin, preserving its natural biodiversity, slowing the ageing process, and protecting against the environmental damage of modern living.

As we enter autumn, there are still wonderful, natural ways to maintain the summer bronze, without the harmful UV rays. Enter Eco Tan - a vegan, cruelty-free, organic tanning range that’s keeping me glowing. Their Winter Skin Gradual Tanner is a 2-in-1 moisturiser and gradual tanning lotion that bestows a gentle sunkissed glow without the risk of spillage or tan lines. I highly recommend applying it with their professional-quality, two-sided applicator Mitt. The cherry on top, their Facial Tanning Water tones and clears facial redness, while gradually bronzing for a brilliantly dewy complexion.

If there’s one thing I used to dread most about the work day, it was the post-lunch lull. It was at this point that my productivity would be low, my energy drained, and even simple tasks would take longer to process. I reached out to our amazing Category Head of Supplements, who suggested I try the energy-elevating combo of Wellness Iron, Adaptogen Complex and Vitamin B Complex – the holy trinity of mental and physical support. Between the fortifying benefits of the iron, the stress-relieving powers of the adaptogens and the improved mental robustness brought about by the vitamin B, I’m delighted to now report sustained energy levels throughout the day.
A TISSUE FOR EVERY ISSUE
Natura’s wide range of tissue salts is carefully formulated to naturally support, balance and promote the healthy functioning of cells. The salts can be used either to reinforce an already healthy lifestyle, or to supplement in support of specific conditions and concerns. The many options to choose from are accompanied by simple educational details so you know exactly which of the formulas is best used in any given moment. Simply place the small, white, lactose-base tablet under your tongue and allow it to dissolve. From common niggles like scratchy throats to assistance with skin conditions, heartburn and gout, there’s a solution for every member of the family.
ANCIENT WISDOM MEETS MODERN SCIENCE
Ayurvedic medicine is a rich and fascinating field, and few brands harness the combination of ancient wisdom and modern science as well as Avalife. I love their Energy Boost formula, which harnesses the power of adaptogenic herbs to help fight fatigue (notice a trend?), and their Good Gut capsules, which use liquorice root extract to relieve gut discomfort. My partner swears by the holy basil in their Sleep solution, and I’m giving all my frazzled friends the Stress Free caps to help relieve their nerves the natural way.

FROM OUR CEO
A message
FROM OUR CEO At Wellness Warehouse, our mantra is to focus on what we can control. From there, we narrow our focus and energy to deliver maximum impact where it matters most at any point in time. In the spirit of staying grounded and connecting, I’m proud to share some of the recent initiatives that are changing lives in the communities we serve. Our partnership with Weave Connect is gaining traction. It is an organisation run by women for women, which helps to empower through upskilling and education, entrepreneurship, access to employment opportunities, and support networks. We’re helping by contributing financial support, training and coaching for skills upliftment and career/personal development opportunities. On the sustainability front, we have almost achieved our first target of planting 500 trees with Greenpop and you, and plan to do even more as this initiative grows. Technology continues to break barriers, and we have embraced some innovative tools to empower our team members. Financial wellness matters, and working with Floatpays has allowed us to support our team members with access to their accrued income prior to payday, as well as an array of financial education tools. This is helping to improve financial literacy, reduce stress and break the cycle of dependency on extortionate payday loans. Needless to say, equal access to affordable primary healthcare is a major priority in our country, and in partnership with MediClub Connect, we are helping to improve this for our team members through fully subsidised, direct access to medical practitioners when needed.
I
n this edition of the Wellness magazine, we explore the themes of staying grounded, connecting and slowing down. How apt, as we experience our world in such violent crisis at this time. As we know, context is everything - particularly when it comes to how we try to live our best possible lives. I hope that you will find in Wellness Warehouse the guidance and support you need on your journey to improved natural wellbeing, despite the noise out there. After all, this is our purpose and why we take such pride in what we do.
Our store footprint continues to grow, and we’re excited to announce the addition of three new stores over the next few months: Delcairn Lifestyle Centre in Kloof (KwaZulu-Natal), Stellenbosch Square in Stellenbosch (Western Cape) and Harvest Place in Kempton Park (Gauteng). We look forward to welcoming you to everything that Wellness Warehouse has to offer! Lastly, please remember that our stores are staffed by Wellness Consultants, who are there to help you on your journey to natural wellbeing. Helping is their passion, and I can assure you of a warm welcome…
Yours in wellness,

A WHOLE L AT TÉ LOVE By Jackie Foot (Wellness Warehouse Product Technologist) & Clarice Gomes (Wellness Warehouse Own Brand Coordinator)
Have you tried our freshly-roasted Wellness Coffee? We’ve bean buzzy tasting the best brews at only the finest coffee roasteries, and are thrilled to have found the perfect cuppa! Our range of Arabica grounds and beans is 100% organic, and words cannot espresso how delicious it is. We spill the beans on everything you need to know about our fabrewlous Wellness Coffee… What is organic coffee? Sip with a smile knowing our organic coffee is not treated with chemically steeped fertilisers, pesticides, herbicides or fungicides during the growing or production process, ensuring cleaner beans, air, land, and water.
What is the difference between a medium and a dark roast? Some people think that dark roasted coffee has more caffeine than a medium roast because of its bitter taste, while others believe that a medium roast contains more caffeine as the caffeine is ‘burnt off’ during the roasting process.
Where does our coffee come from? Our coffee is a blend of 100% Arabica beans that have been organically grown on African soil.
The truth is that caffeine is extremely stable during the roasting process, and both medium and dark roasts have virtually the same levels.
Arabica beans come from the flowering Coffea arabica tree, one of the two main types of coffee trees. The other tree is called Coffea canephora, more commonly known as Robusta. Did you know that Arabica beans are grown at a high altitude? The height is an indicator of the quality of the bean, and therefore also the coffee. Arabica beans are known to produce a richer and smoother cup of coffee than Robusta.
The difference lies in the taste: darker roasts tend to have an elevated level of bitter attributes, with richer and smokier notes, and medium roasts have a balance of flavour and a slightly sweet taste.
1. Coffee is rich in antioxidants including hydrocinnamic acid and polyphenols. These may help to disarm free radicals, which can lower oxidative stress.
How do you determine the intensity of coffee? The intensity of a coffee is the character of the blend, and depends on the consistency of the body and the aromatic richness of the drink.
3. Coffee stimulates your nervous system and increases adrenaline in your blood, which can help prepare your body for intense physical workouts, thereby improving your physical performance.
Join the Wellness family and stay up to date with all the latest news by following us on Facebook and Instagram @wellnesswarehouse
Our Medium Roast has an intensity of 6/10. The intensity scale describes this brew as a balanced coffee, with a round body and rich flavour. Our Dark Roast has an intensity of 8/10. The intensity scale describes this cup as a coffee with a consistent body and rich aroma. 3 REASONS TO TOP UP YOUR COFFEE CUP
2. Your daily cup of Joe can help increase your energy, mood, and brain function.

fter my mom’s 40th birthday, she suddenly developed a completely new lease on life. She decided to adopt a healthier way of living, particularly when it came to nutrition. Shortly after, we began to eat very little red meat and processed food, and added plenty more fruit and vegetables to our diet. I will be forever grateful to her for being a positive influence on me, and inspiring me to live a healthy lifestyle. Shortly after, I discovered the life-changing magic of yoga. I remember reading a copy of Shape magazine with an article on Christy Turlington in it (she was the perfect example of ‘health goals’ for me). This was way before the rise of walk-in yoga studios and Uber, so all I had as a reference point was that magazine and Christy’s six asanas…and I’ve been hooked on yoga ever since!
alcohol as a first step in fostering a more active lifestyle that involves activities like hiking, running and swimming. I turned 35 last year, and trying to maintain a healthy body as an older woman hasn’t been easy. I developed a number of gut issues in my late 20s, which have also been a challenge, so last year I decided to get to the root cause by seeing a functional medicine practitioner. They conducted a detailed genetics test which gave me an overview of my health markers, revealing the dietary guidelines I should follow based on my gene type. I consider myself a constant seeker, and am now exploring Ayurveda as a path to being healthier and more grounded, especially when it comes to improving my gut health. Developing a daily ritual of meditating, even if it’s just for five minutes, has been truly beneficial too. It feels like giving your mind a good vacuum clean. My hope for my health journey is to continue to be curious about ways I can take better care of my wellbeing. It’s about developing habits that can be embedded in everyday life, living from a place of peace, gratitude, and focusing on the progress I am making – not on perfection. Being a solo
It’s true when they say, “You are what you eat.” (I’d like to add that you are also what you drink!) When I moved to Cape Town in 2014, I really embraced the ‘wine farm’ culture - having lazy picnics with lots of food and wine - and found myself consuming way more alcohol than I used to. I eventually made a conscious decision to be more mindful, and have since cut down significantly on drinking
entrepreneur means I have little room to get ill, so I try my best to get enough rest and make time for self-care to avoid burnout something I have suffered from year after year. I’ve learned you need to set healthy boundaries and come to terms with the limitations of having only 24 hours in a day, and doing your best with them. Finding sustainable solutions so that everyone has a better tomorrow is also very important to me. I spent the past year working with a team at the World Bank, looking at innovative ways to curb the high rate of youth unemployment. I’ve also recently been appointed as a board member at the Goodwork Foundation, a world-class NPO that’s committed to improving the education and employment prospects of young South Africans in marginalised communities. It is this work paired with my journey to wellness that give meaning to my life, so they are things I strive towards every day.

A MAN ON A MISSION Siya Kolisi on Why Men’s Mental Health Matters Springbok Captain and international icon Siya Kolisi isn’t just making great strides on the field. The recentlyawarded SA Rugby Player of the Year is also a champion in the fight to dismantle the harmful stereotypes associated with men’s vulnerability. Acting as an advocate for men’s mental health awareness in collaboration with the Dove Men+Care campaign, Kolisi hopes that his platform to speak up on the topic will encourage others to seek help for their mental wellbeing. We chat to him about his passion for the cause…

PROFILE
How did the stereotypes around mental health - specifically among South African men - affect you while growing up? Various mental health issues affect one’s mood, thoughts, and behaviour. The most common ones I have encountered are depression, anxiety and addictive disorders. There is a hesitancy to talk about mental health due to social norms among men in general. For example, men are told that they need to be strong and ‘in control’ of their emotions – that “men don’t cry”, and must rely on themselves rather than speaking openly about their feelings. There is a stigma around men’s mental health in the black communities that I am a part of. As a result, men often suffer in silence as mental health issues are usually not prioritised. The association of mental health with weakness is also a problem. For example, when some communities process grief, men are not allowed to show emotions or cry. Can you share a bit about your personal experience with mental health challenges? When my grandmother and mother died, I was numb, and it was only later in life that I learnt how to process that grief properly. Over the years, I have been on a journey to learn to recognise mental health issues and overcome the barriers that prevent many men like me from opening up and seeking help when we are struggling. I’ve learnt to be as aware of mental challenges as I am of physical injuries. As an athlete on social media, I must prioritise looking after my mental health. For example, people can say mean, hurtful and critical things to sportspeople without caring about how their words impact us. I do my best to limit my engagement on social media and focus on my internal process. I do my best when training in preparation for a match, and I give it my all on match day. If we don’t win, I need to forgive myself, ignore the naysayers, and focus on how I can improve next time.
Do you think that more awareness and conversations that encourage men to prioritise their mental health can help to tackle genderbased violence? Yes, absolutely. There are many drivers of gender-based violence. One of the things that makes it worse is that many men have poor coping strategies or ways of dealing with the everyday stressors in their lives. Bottling up emotions and resorting to things like alcohol and extended isolation may worsen the situation and increase violence against women. When the COVID-19 pandemic led to our first hard lockdown, I was saddened to hear many reports that GBV had risen across the country. Sadly, this was not a surprise, because I grew up seeing women bear the brunt of men’s frustration when social circumstances were challenging.
him, I hug him - all the things that I longed for as a boy, I am giving back to my son. I allow him to see me cry, to show him it’s okay to show emotions. I teach him that it’s okay to say that he struggles with something. I celebrate him when he asks for support. I am teaching him not to limit himself from experiencing the full range of his humanity.
How have your faith, family, friends, and the rest of your support system helped you to engage in conversation about mental health and embrace a certain level of vulnerability in your masculinity? I am fortunate to have people around me who I can talk to. My wife, close friends, church community and teammates all form my support system. Collectively, they create a space for me to be vulnerable and have an outlet when the pressure builds and things get overwhelming. I still wholeheartedly endorse speaking to mental health professionals as well. On the work front, being partnered with the Dove Men+Care campaign has proven to be very empowering. It encourages holistic care from the inside out, constantly engaging with us as men and finding ways for us to care for ourselves and others. How would you describe an ‘emotionally intelligent man’? I think this man can understand and manage his emotions in a positive way. A man who asks himself, “How are others experiencing me? How am I experiencing others?” It allows them to communicate effectively and invest in healthy relationships. I am trying to teach my son to grow up and become this man. I express emotions. I tell him I love him, I kiss
What would you say to someone who struggles with being open about their emotions? And how would you encourage other men to flip the script on harmful stereotypes and take the necessary steps to prioritise their mental wellbeing? I would like them to know that it is okay to talk about their feelings. It’s okay to say that you are struggling. It’s okay to talk about the things that are challenging you. It’s okay to ask for help. It is not a weakness. Find someone you trust, and talk to them about what you’re going through. I have people I talk to about what’s happening in my life. How can readers join the conversation? I encourage readers to stay tuned to my Instagram page (@siyakolisi) and the Dove Men+Care Global Channel (@dovemencare) throughout the year as we continue to build on these conversations.

WELLNESS LIVING GROUNDED
Everything in life has its season. Our journey to wellness takes on a different emphasis depending on the time of year we’re in, and as we move into autumn, we prepare for shorter days and slower rhythms. It’s also when we focus on building our natural immunity to protect ourselves during the months to come. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be focusing on the mindful activities that make up our lives as we live in a more measured, conscious way. STAY GROUNDED
SLOW DOWN
April is when we stay grounded. After a summer filled with activity, it’s our cue to ease into a slower pace of life. As with any change of season, it’s a great opportunity to reassess your daily routine to make sure you’re making choices that support wellbeing for you and your family, so we’ll be sharing ways to care for yourself and nourish yourself more naturally.
Lastly, June is when we slow down. The journey to wellness is slow and considered, not a sprint. Downtime is an important part of our annual rhythm and this month we acknowledge that. With this in mind, we’ll be sharing some natural ways to boost your immunity when it needs it most, and also ideas around ageing well to support your body in whatever phase of life you’re in.
CREATE CONNECTION May is when we create connection. Autumn is historically a time to come together around the harvest, and even though this is not a reality for most of us anymore, connection to a community is still part of what we seek at this stage of the year. This month we’ll be showcasing local suppliers and partners and also celebrating the family ties that are so important to us over Mother’s Day.

S W E E T P O TAT O R O S E S Serves: 4 - 6
INGREDIENTS • 4 medium orange sweet potatoes, washed and peeled • ¼ cup (60 ml) oil • 1 garlic clove, finely grated • 1 TBSP (15 ml) herb salt
METHOD 1 . Preheat the oven to 180 °C and oil a 6-hole muffin pan. 2 . Slice the potatoes using a mandolin slicer or the long side of a box grater, ensuring the slices are paper thin. 3 . Whisk the oil, garlic, and herb salt together and set aside. 4 . On a wooden board, arrange 10 - 14 sweet potato slices, overlapping one another. Brush them with the oil and garlic mixture. 5 . Carefully roll the sweet potato slices, holding onto them to form a rose. Place the rose inside the oiled muffin pan. Continue until all the potatoes are used up. TIP: If you haven’t got a mandolin slicer, you can either use a basic box grater or a very sharp knife to slice the sweet potatoes thinly. They don’t need to be perfectly sliced roses, and putting them inside the muffin pan ensures that they stay together and don’t fall apart.
6 . Bake, uncovered, for 30 - 35 minutes (the edges should turn brown and crisp, and the potatoes should be cooked through). 7 . Remove from the oven and serve immediately. 8 . These roses can be served with a dipping sauce as a snack or as an elegant side dish.

Free-Range Eggs Not All They’re Cracked up to Be? By Abigail Baker
T
here are a few essentials that are always on my grocery list: oat milk, seasonal fruit, whole grain bread, and eggs. A staple in many homes, eggs are enjoyed by about 75 % of the world’s population, and can be prepared in an ever-expanding number of ways.
zinc. They also contain high-density lipoprotein which can reduce the risk of heart disease and strokes. Additionally, and perhaps most plainly, they are a great source of protein and contain few calories in comparison to other forms of protein like beef or pork.
Yet, this marvel of an ingredient is not only reputable for its diverse uses but also its nutritional value. Eggs contain numerous trace nutrients needed for holistic health, including vitamin A, B12, and E; calcium, phosphorus, folate, and
However, all is not clicking and clucking in the chicken run...
24 \\ W W W. W E L L N E S S W A R E H O U S E . C O M
Egg cartons include information about the eggs’ grade, size, and how the hens who laid them have been treated.
Labels like cage-free, organic, freerange, and pasture-raised describe the living environment of the hens and their standard of life. Like most of us, I confidently trusted and assumed that eggs came from hens who clucked away and generally lived their best lives in a lush field, and that by buying free-range I was making the best choice for my health, for the chickens and for the environment at large. The reality of my choice, however, is vastly different.
DID YOU KNOW? Since the 1990s, egg production volume has increased by over 100 % across the globe. The high protein feed and antibiotics given to commercial hens force them to lay about 500 eggs in the time they would naturally only lay 20.
There is only one simple condition that the farmers need to adhere to to use this label: the hens need to be allowed access to the outside. This vague regulation has no more detail than that. The dimensions or quality of the space aren’t mentioned, nor how long the hens should spend outside each day. Neither will you find any stipulations that ensure the chickens are aware of or can easily access their outside space. Hence, free-range chickens often spend only a couple of hours of their lives outside, and are definitely not free to range. Sadly, there is hardly any difference between the treatment of free-range hens and caged, commercial hens. Both are given mass antibiotics, experience beak trimming or being de-beaked, live in battery cages, and as a result, are vulnerable to disease and a life expectancy that’s cut short to only onetenth of their natural lifespan. The unethical treatment of chickens is not only a concern for those who care about animal rights - it is also deepling unsettling for any egg eater, as the harmful treatment of hens lowers the potential nutritional value of their produce. It’s not all doom and gloom, though! There are other alternatives to commercial and free-range eggs.
Pasture-raised eggs, for example, are laid by hens that experience a greater standard of living, as the regulations to label your eggs as pasture-raised are more extensive, and include stipulations about the outside space’s dimensions, conditions, vegetation, and how long the hens should be outside each day or week. These hens spend a greater portion of their time in the sun, receiving vitamin D, and live most naturally as they dustbathe and eat nutrient-dense bugs. These chirpier hens’ eggs are also more well-rounded and healthy as they contain more vitamin A and E, omega-3 fatty acids, carotenoid antioxidants, and beta carotene. They also contain less cholesterol and fat.
PRIME YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM
Pasture-raised eggs might not be as budget-friendly as their mainstream counterparts, but the expense often reflects the extra care that is taken in ensuring good rearing conditions for the hens, plus the eggs’ high nutritional value. So next time you go shopping for your pantry, be sure to check the labels to see how your eggs have been reared. By being more intentional and conscious about your grocery list, you can help to make a greater difference to your health, our feathered friends, and the future of nutrition on our planet.

Honeybee Heroes By Abigail Baker
T
he great caretakers of our planet come in all shapes and sizes. Although their roles vary, their purpose remains the same - nourish the earth and allow it to bloom. All are noble creatures - from the beautiful butterfly to the skinny spider - but none so noble as the heroic honeybee. But as the heat rises, deforestation continues, and habitats are defaced in the name of progression and modernity, it is actually the honeybees themselves that are in need of heroic intervention due to their dwindling

population. Honeybee Heroes has heard their plight and taken up arms. Based in the farm-filled Cape Overberg, Honeybee Heroes has created a sanctuary for the Western Cape Apis mellifera capensis honeybee in an effort to help reverse their decline. In order to see the resurrection of the honeybee population in the next decade, Honeybee Heroes has cultivated a three-pronged strategy:
Ethical Conservation The organisation aims to protect the South African honeybee by ethically and sustainably taking care of their own hives, as well as those that the environmentally-conscious folk who support them have adopted. Their beekeeping practices include extracting honey only from the strongest hives, which have a surplus of honey, as well as only harvesting honey at times that won’t disturb the colony. As a result, their bees will thrive and reproduce as nature intended. Female Upliftment Honeybee Heroes provides training and facilities to upskill women from low-income households in small-scale beekeeping. They foresee this mentorship of a new generation of ethical beekeepers as not only a way to upskill their community, but also to inspire ecoconsciousness and a love for little bee-ings that’s handed down to generations to come.
FOOD
Consumer Education Honeybee Heroes aims to cultivate and nurture mindful consumerism through education and advocacy for bees and local bee products, both within their community and through partnerships with retailers like Wellness Warehouse. They hope to inspire consumers to adopt the eco-friendly habits and alternatives that can help to bring about a cycle of upliftment and discontinued environmental degradation.
How Can YOU Bee a Hero? By purchasing your honey at Wellness Warehouse, you’re supporting South African beekeepers who take care of their bees and produce honey that is: - Raw - High-quality - Free from additives - Ethically produced - Badger-friendly Adopt a Hive Honeybee Heroes provides consumers with the opportunity to directly engage and protect the environment by funding a home for a new colony of busy, buzzing honeybees. Once a hive has been adopted, the team creates a personalised beehive and places it on their farm, or in a private nature reserve. About 30 000 honeybees will be able to live safely in one of these hives! What’s more, hive adoption includes a welcome bundle of 3 kg (about 6 jars) of deliciously ethical honey, an official adoption certificate, a honey dipper, and an opportunity to visit the farm and take part in one of their beekeeping experiences.

Are You a Reducetarian? By Liesl Lamprecht

o you make it a habit to cut back on animal products? Have you been more pedantic when checking the ingredients on product labels lately? Are you eco-minded yet still struggling to give up certain foods? Move over veganism, vegetarianism, pescatarianism, flexitarianism… There’s a new kid on the food trends block, and it’s called reducetarianism. If you’re on the fence about going fully-fledged vegan but still find yourself wanting to reduce your intake of meat and dairy for ethical, environmental and health reasons, you might be a reducetarian without even knowing it!
Simply put, this mouthful of a diet is the practice of reducing your consumption of meat, dairy, and eggs without giving them up entirely. It’s the perfect middle ground for those who find themselves between two extremes – a food identity crisis if you will – and offers a more pragmatic and sustainable solution for those who have tried and failed at their veggie diet as soon as the first cheeseburger came along.
is a lifestyle that’s “ Reducetarianism characterised by being mindful of the ethical farming practices behind the ingredients in your pantry, like choosing to opt for grass-fed meat or pasture-raised eggs.

The lifestyle embraces the core principles of Mediterranean and vegetarian diets, and chooses to focus less on what you shouldn’t eat, and more on all the wonderful plant-based ingredients you can and should rather be eating more of. Think of it as cultivating a deeper appreciation for dishes in which fruit, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, beans and nuts are the stars of the show, and then, in turn, reducing your intake of meat, seafood, milk and eggs to the occasional weekly meal item. Reducetarianism isn’t an all-or-nothing approach, instead, people who live by it choose to celebrate the small changes in personal and institutional behaviour so that, as a society, we can collectively strive towards a sustainable future.

TA K E N BY TREES By Michael Holmwood
that would offer the solution to this crisis. The Director General of the ministry, Tomohide Akiyama, is said to be responsible for developing the concept of ‘shinrin-yoku’ – which, at its core, would promote the principle of reciprocity. The public would benefit from forests that had been designed and maintained with the practice of forest bathing in mind. By making the forests more accessible, people were more inclined to engage with nature and experience many positive benefits. Over time, the relationship between people and nature was rekindled, and the appreciation and respect for Nature was revived - resulting in more people wanting to protect it.
T
he thought of forest bathing may stir up some interesting images, but I can assure you that it’s all totally innocent and rather serene. The term originated in Japan in the 1980s, where it is known as shinrin-yoku - ‘shinrin’ meaning forest, and ‘yoku’ meaning bath. Simply put, forest bathing is all about immersing yourself in the forest by taking in the atmosphere through your senses. More on that in a bit. We first need to understand that Japanese culture is inherently deeply religious, with its roots originating in two main religions - Shinto and Buddhism. These two religions have
34 \\ W W W. W E L L N E S S W A R E H O U S E . C O M
many similarities, but the most pertinent has to be their shared appreciation and respect for nature. They believe that you are part of nature, and that you feel your best when you are connected to it. Back in the 1980s, these deeply embedded beliefs were challenged by the tech boom and the materialistic values that came along with it. The Japanese economy was thriving, but at the cost of diminishing forests and a burnt-out population. It was The Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestries and Fisheries
It was a genius move made by the ministry, designed to support their agenda with an added health benefit for the people of Japan. These hopes for health benefits were based mostly upon religious beliefs and intuition at the time. Although the benefits were clearly there from inception, it wasn’t until the late 1990s and into the early 2000s that science would provide a deeper understanding of the healing power at play. It turns out there really is something quite significant about the presence of trees. Studies found that trees release phytoncides, an anti-bacterial/
URIC ACID MODULATOR microbial agent which acts as a defence against unwanted parasites and pests. These phytoncides are released into the air as natural oils are produced by trees. If you have ever experienced walking in a forest, you will know that it has a very characteristic smell. This comes from the terpenes, a component of phytoncides. Being exposed to phytoncides has many proven benefits, such as reduced stress and lower blood pressure. So, by bathing in the atmosphere of the forest, you are soaking up these healing phytoncides.
If you would like to experience forest bathing, there are some basic steps you should follow: - Choose a forest that offers a variety of plants and trees. It should be a place where you feel safe and able to fully relax. - Aim to spend at least two hours in the forest, but without any specific outcome or destination in mind. Allow yourself to be guided by the forest, using all of your senses to explore your environment. - Be mindful of your thoughts. - Don’t over-exert yourself - it should not be a hike. The terrain should be easy to navigate.

Trust Your Gut By Vashti Pedro
Paying close attention to your gut is imperative to your holistic health. There is a clear connection between your gut health and the occurrence of disease in your body, as your gut contains 75% of your immune system. When you get sick, you should pay close attention to what your gut needs. As Hippocrates said, “Death begins in the gut.” In order for your gut to remain healthy, its microbiota population - which is made up of trillions of cells including viruses, bacteria and fungi - needs to have access to good bacteria and be without intrusive amounts of bad bacteria.

When your microbiota is out of balance, dysbiosis occurs. Dysbiosis exposes your body to several negative effects as the bad bacteria produces endotoxins in the body called lipopolysaccharides (LPS) that can leak through your gut lining and enter your bloodstream. This can negatively effect your body in the following ways: • Brain function Decreases dopamine and serotonin levels, which can affect your short term memory and increase depressive episodes • Gastrointestinal tract Causes leaky gut syndrome and decreases villi in intestine, which can lead to malabsorportion • Thyroid gland Decreases TSH (Thyroid Stimulating Hormone) and T4 to T3 conversion, which lowers your metabolic rate, resulting in weight gain • Kidneys Decreases excretion of chemicals, resulting in your body being unable to expel toxins safely • Weight gain Increases levels of ghrelin – the hunger hormone - and decreases leptin, which is the hormone that informs your body that you are full • Liver Limits detoxification processes, thus weakening the liver’s ability to filter out harmful materials • Adrenals Increases cortisol levels, inflammation and, in turn, oxidative stress in your body

There are many ways that an overgrowth of bad bacteria can cause extensive damage to your body. Luckily, there are also many ways in which you can increase the good bacteria in your gut… and it all starts in the kitchen. By eating a wide variety of healthy foods, you can nurture a more diverse microbiome in your gut. The more diverse the microbiome, the healthier your gut. Try eating fermented, probiotic-rich foods like yoghurt, kimchi, kombucha and sauerkraut, which are high in lactobacilli - a type of bacteria that’s beneficial to your gut health. Additionally, consume high fibre foods that are rich in prebiotics to feed the good bacteria, such as flaxseeds, bananas, garlic, onions, and soybeans.

Keeping Up With the Collagen Craze By Liesl Lamprecht
C
ollagen is all the rage right now, with the trend-setting ‘collagen cult’ making this buzzword supplement an everyday staple in beauty routines and morning coffees and smoothies the globe over. The health industry has quickly caught up with the hype, hailing collagen as the modern-day fountain of youth and a miracle remedy for smoothing wrinkled skin. Nowadays, you’ll see a range of creative collagen products lining the aisles of supermarkets, as well as health stores. From coffee creamers to fruity chews, single-serving sachets and even collagen hair spray, there seems to be no limit to the variety of ways you can get your collagen fix. So what’s all the fuss about?
40 \\ W W W. W E L L N E S S W A R E H O U S E . C O M
Let’s start with the basics: what is collagen?
COLLAGEN CRASH COURSE Collagen is the most abundant protein found throughout the body, but particularly in the skin, bones, tendons, ligaments, teeth, joints, and connective tissues. It is often described as the building block or glue of the skin, aiding in elasticity and plumpness, amongst other benefits.

eating a diet that is rich in “ Byprotein, vitamin C (especially fruits and vegetables that are high in antioxidants like citrus, strawberries, papaya, kale and bell peppers) and zinc, you can help your body to produce and maintain more collagen for optimal health and wellbeing.
“
Yet as we age, collagen production starts to decline - which can lead to wrinkles and fine lines, sagging skin, brittle nails, thinning hair, joint pain and stiffness. By the time we reach the age of 50, our bodies are producing 30% less collagen than they did at the age of 20. Many try to counteract this process by taking collagen supplements in the form of flavourless and odourless powders or tablets that can simply be scooped into coffee cups, smoothie blenders, or cooking pots. Others prefer to apply their collagen topically through face creams, serums or hair products, while the braver few opt to drink pure bone broth.

Remember, collagen supplements should not be replacing your diet of natural protein sources. Collagen isn’t a complete protein, and therefore still needs to be paired with foods like meat, fish, beans or legumes. Whether you’re recovering from a sports injury, looking to reinvent your beauty routine or simply want to find out for yourself what the craze is all about, there are plenty of collagen supplements on the market for you to try.

There are three types of popular sources of hydrolyzed collagen powder that you’ll be most familiar with: bovine, marine and vegan. Let’s bone up on the facts…
BOVINE COLLAGEN Bovine collagen is naturally derived from the skin, bones, muscles and hides of cattle, and is the closest to the type of collagen that our own bodies produce. It is made up of type I and type II collagen, and is beneficial for skin, hair, nails and internal connective tissues.
MARINE COLLAGEN Marine collagen is extracted from the skin and scales of fish. This type of collagen is also a great choice when targeting ageing skin and brittle hair and nails, and although it can sometimes be more expensive than bovine collagen, it is the preferred option for pescatarians.
VEGAN COLLAGEN Hold up. If collagen is an animal by-product, how can vegans and vegetarians get their daily dose of the coveted collagen supplement? Not to worry! By harnessing the cleanest collagen building blocks from plants (where animals get their collagen from in the first place), scientists have formulated a high-concentration vegan booster powder. This plant-based type of collagen contains the nutritional properties of vitamin B, C and amino acid and antioxidant complexes to bolster your body’s natural collagen synthesis and production.

Although psilocybe cubensis – also known as magic mushrooms - have a history of being associated with recreational pursuits such as singing Pink Floyd songs around a campfire in the 70s, they’ve also been ingested throughout the ages as a tool for self-discovery and spiritual experiences. Today, they’re being increasingly used in both holistic and clinical settings to manage and treat a number of disorders, including Alzheimer’s, anorexia nervosa, opioid addiction, depression, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

But magic mushrooms aren’t the only incredible species – their nonpsychoactive counterparts boast some impressive health benefits, too. Here’s a guide to some of our favourites…
Mushroom Type
Potential Health Benefits
How to Take Them
Reishi
• Immune support • Blood sugar control • Stress reduction • Sleep support
• Eaten raw, cooked or dried • Capsules • Teas • Tinctures • Powders
Originally, reishi and cordyceps mushrooms were so rare and sought after that they were served to royalty.
Cordyceps
• Improved sporting performance • Anti-ageing properties • Assistance in type 2 diabetes management • Inflammation support
• Eaten cooked (consuming them raw is not advised, as you may experience nausea and an upset stomach) • Capsules • Teas • Tinctures • Powders
Cordyceps is a favourite amongst athletes, as it increases our oxygen intake and ATP energy production. It’s best taken in the morning or before a workout, and avoided before bedtime.
Lion’s Mane
• Improved cognitive function • Immune support • Increased mental clarity and focus • Enhanced physical and mental relaxation
• Eaten raw, cooked or dried • Capsules • Teas • Tinctures • Powders
Lion’s Mane stimulates and repairs the brain’s nerve cells, thus increasing cognitive function and reducing the symptoms of Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Fun Fact
DID YOU KNOW? Cordyceps, known as the killer fungus, infects insects (mostly ants) and starts to control their muscles, directing them to a high perch, where a zombie-like metamorphosis begins. The fungus then slowly kills the insect, and sprouts a fruiting body from their head, spreading its spores to all unfortunate, unsuspecting insects below, in the hopes of the process repeating. Not to worry, though - humans are, of course, not affected in this way, and the powerful fungi actually has some incredible benefits for us!

The Healing Power of Scent By Nics Wolman
T
he first records of the use of essential oils originate from Greece and Rome in 4500 CB, where they were traded extensively with various regions of the Orient. Ancient India, Persia and Egypt soon joined the trade market with their own oils. Although no one knows for certain, it is widely assumed that these products were the extracts of flowers, roots, and leaves in fatty oils.
Pure, natural oils played an important role in Egyptian culture and ceremonies, as they were used either as a means to purify the air, or as sacrifices to the gods. The scented essences were used for baths, ambient perfumes and massage oils, or as medicine. Today, more and more people are making use of essential oils as part of a holistic mind and body wellness regimen. The body’s limbic system governs our emotions, facilitates memory storage and retrieval, establishes emotional states, and links the conscious, intellectual functions of the cerebral cortex with the unconscious, autonomic functions of the brain stem. The quickest route to our limbic systems is through the nose, which is why scent has the ability to trigger strong memories and emotions, and can immediately take us back to specific moments in time. A scent can either bring up fond memories that make us feel good, or make us feel anxious or unsettled about a traumatic event from the past. All these experiences are housed in the limbic system. The good news is that we don’t need to hold onto the negative experiences, and can work to release them through the use of essential oils. Our bodies are constantly talking to us, telling us exactly what they need. When we crave certain foods, we could be lacking in certain vitamins and minerals. The same applies with scent - if you’re drawn to a certain fragrance, such as jasmine, you could be in need of a pick-me-up (jasmine is a popular natural mood elevator) or be struggling with your sleep. Or if you’re drawn to rose, for example, you could be seeking greater confidence and connection - the traditional symbolic association with this fragrance. Working with the scents that resonate with you is a safe and enjoyable way to aid in addressing what needs to be unblocked or healed in your mind, body and life in any given moment. Remember that it’s always best to use organic and environmentally-conscious ingredients, as whatever we put in or on our bodies will affect us. With such an abundance of beautiful essential oils in our country, it’s also important to support and buy from our local communities.

Maintain Your Spine to Maximise Your Potential By Steve Boyd
S
pinology is a philosophy and practice that maintains the alignment of the spine, ensuring the optimal functioning and performance of the entire body. Every level of human performance is controlled by the body’s chemistry. For example, your body chemistry determines your level of energy during the day, how well you sleep at night, your mood, your attitude, as well as how well you relate to other people. Your body needs to be in a constant state of homeostasis. This relates to spinology – as the central nervous system, which includes the brain and spinal cord, regulates the production of chemicals by transmitting messages through nerve impulses and is protected by the spine itself. Thus, slight misaligned vertebrae in your spine can interfere with the transmission of nerve impulses, which can result in a chemical imbalance and holistic sub-optimal functioning of the body. A spinal occlusion is a slightly misaligned vertebra. The most common causes include: • Severe trauma (such as car accidents) • Sport injuries • Work • Minor slips, bumps and falls • Poor posture • Stress • Sleeping habits • Poor lifting action In short, spinal occlusions are caused by everyday life. The body can, and often does, correct these occlusions, but unfortunately not in all cases. Spinal occlusions are also mostly symptomfree, so it’s wise to have your spine checked on a regular basis.
54 \\ W W W. W E L L N E S S W A R E H O U S E . C O M
Children have the most to gain, as the sooner their spinal occlusions are corrected, the easier it is for them to avoid the typical long-term cumulative damage that occurs in adults who only start getting their spines checked much later in life. A spinologist uses a gentle technique of reading the muscles of the spine and assisting the body to correct spinal occlusions. In doing so, they remove the interference on the transmission of nerve impulses, allowing the body to restore chemical balance and return to a state of optimal functioning and performance. Typical benefits of spinology include: • Increased vitality Experience improved mood, energy, stamina, concentration, and digestion • Strengthened defences Increase your immune system’s performance • Improved rest Get sufficient rest and maintain holistic health • Improved vertebral joints Once your vertebrae are back in their ideal position, spinal dynamics will be restored • Stabilised posture With spinal dynamics restored, your natural ideal posture can return in activities like walking, sitting, practicing sports, etc.

MOVEMENT
Your Chance to Shape the World By James White
W
ith the world ‘opening up’ again, there has been a mass movement of people heading back to physical spaces that allow for both human connection and freedom of movement. Millions of people are making an effort to get out of their homes - where they have spent the best part of two years - and back into the water, resulting in a global shortage of wetsuits. The gyms that survived COVID are back to their early 2019 membership numbers as people crave a sense of community again.
While the past two years have been devastating in many ways, they also served the whole of humanity with one serious message: you need to take care of your health. Never in the history of our society have nutrition, fitness and health been more topical or in vogue.
58 \\ W W W. W E L L N E S S W A R E H O U S E . C O M
I own a few gyms and am also a partner in an online fitness and nutrition business. I’ve seen people flood from one to the other and back again over the past two years. While I can completely understand why this has happened, I also can’t help thinking that it also illustrates the binary nature so often associated with people’s health. There seems to be an ‘all or nothing’, ‘pass or fail’, ‘diet or gorge’ cycle of extremes that is continually perpetuated in this space. I believe that this moment is an inflection point for us all. This is a moment we can become aware of the system 1 type marketing that has dominated the space for too long. The promise of ‘Six days to killer abs’, rather than encouraging a more sustainable approach to health. Let’s stop demonstrating yoyo diets to the generations that are following us.
find a healthy balance “Let’s between the need for
physical connection within a community and all the benefits that come with the practicality and affordability of online solutions.
“
Let’s show up each day and try to get healthier. On busy days, this may involve a 20-minute walk. Remember what you would have done for that during hard lockdown! On other days, it might be a 45-minute high-intensity session. It’s ok to rest. It’s good to think of your training block in years as opposed to days, and your meals as a reward rather than punishment. Breathe. Meditate. Take care of your mental wellbeing, too.
have an opportunity to be “ We the generation that brings an
awareness to what true health is – enjoying a long life in a body that is pushed and listened to in equal measure.
“
I’d encourage you to set health goals beyond just the aesthetic and to start focusing on the fact that the longevity we all crave is best served by a body and mind that are consistently supported, maintained and prioritised.

Finding Yin By Olivia van den Heever
I
n this fast-paced yang world, finding yin starts on our yoga mat.
Yin yoga’s call to ‘do less’ may not sit easily with those who are used to an active, sweaty workout. Yet this powerful practice may be exactly what you need to restore balance to a busy, hectic lifestyle while offering a list of proven benefits to your physical body, nervous system, and emotional and mental wellbeing.
yoga is a slow, gentle form “ Yin of yoga made up of a series of passive, mostly floor-based postures that are held for longer periods of time.
“
Rather than using force or control, the practice works with the elements of time and gravity to bring you deeper into the poses, offering up a space to let go, surrender and shift into a deeply relaxed state. So many of us are spending most of our time stuck in the sympathetic or ‘fight, flight or freeze’ nervous system, with more widespread, chronically elevated cortisol levels than ever before. Many people don’t give themselves space, time, and - most importantly - permission, to release the need to always be ‘doing’ and allow themselves to just be in their beingness. This is the gift that yin yoga offers.
‘yang’ yoga practices “ Whereas such as ashtanga and power yoga focus on strength, discipline and movement, yin is all about doing less by softening, releasing and opening to receive the medicine of each pose.
“
60 \\ W W W. W E L L N E S S W A R E H O U S E . C O M
Less of a workout and more of a ‘work in’, the focus is about going inwards to connect with the subtle sensations of your body and breath, and to tap into the healing powers of your parasympathetic ‘rest and digest’ nervous system. Yin yoga is a practice that’s said to facilitate healing on a physical, emotional, mental and energetic level. Physically, rather than working on developing or stretching our muscles, it guides us to relax our muscles in order to gently activate the fascia, ligaments and tendons, building flexibility in a unique way. The power of yin yoga lies in the long holds, which should last at least three to five minutes per pose, but can be held for as long as 15. Props are often used to further support the process, allowing a gradual opening up of the body in a physical and energetic way. Energetically, yin works with the principles of traditional Chinese medicine by activating specific meridians, or energy channels that run throughout the body. The same channels are stimulated in acupuncture treatments. By physically moving our bodies into the prescribed shapes, we allow for an unblocking of stagnant energy and enhance the flow of ‘chi’ or life force energy to circulate in the body.
research is “Somatic proving more than ever that
unprocessed emotions are stored in the body. Yin yoga serves to create space to let go of any stuck or stagnant energy or bottled-up emotions.
“
Certain postures may bring about a cathartic release through tears, light shaking or deep sighs. On a mental level, it serves as a meditative practice, with a focus on being still and present. This practice of stillness is one of the most challenging aspects to what appears to be an ‘easy’ style of yoga. Studies have shown that a regular practice of yin yoga outperforms meditation in significantly reducing stress, alleviating anxiety, improving sleep and balancing emotions. Some other significant benefits are enhanced mental focus, increased flexibility, improved circulation, as well as an overall sense of well-being. Within our on-the-go lifestyles, yin yoga offers a safe space in which you can shift gears from the busyness of the day into a nurturing, calm and relaxed state that will bring about a greater sense of inner peace and tranquillity that spills over into every other area of your life.

BEAUTY
Autumn Beauty Out with the old, in with the new By Mpho Masenya
A
utumn has finally graced us with its presence, and the signs are all around us. The days are cosy, tree leaves are gold, red and yellow, and mornings have that crisp, bright feeling. Just as the trees shed their leaves, our bodies, too, shed both skin and hair. The sudden drop in temperature and humidity can cause flaky, thirsty skin and brittle hair. It’s time for an autumn self-care plan! Here are some of our top natural beauty tips for this time of year…
Nutrition Beauty starts from within. What we eat matters even more than what we put on our skin and hair. Topical products may temporarily enhance our outer features, but they don’t make up for underlying nutrient deficiencies. Nutrients are key components in our body’s renewal processes. Here are some simple adjustments you can make to enhance your daily routine: Eat a balanced diet Ensure that your diet contains everything in the food pyramid - from protein, complex carbohydrates and healthy fats to seasonal fruit and vegetables. Once you have the basics sorted, you can then also add in some quality supplements for that extra boost.
62 \\ W W W. W E L L N E S S W A R E H O U S E . C O M
Care for your gut health Optimal gut health is key to the wellbeing of your skin and hair. Poor digestion is evidenced in skin and hair due to low levels of the fat-soluble vitamins: A, D, E and K. Eat plenty of probiotics and fermented foods, as they improve digestion and the absorption of nutrients. Choose foods and supplements with strains of lactobacillus & bifido bacterium to boost gut flora and aid in repairing dry skin and hair loss. Increase your intake of these beautifying vitamins for glowing skin and hair: Vitamin D Known as the sunshine vitamin, vitamin D3 is made by our bodies in collaboration with the sun - like solar panels creating electricity from the sun. With Covid-19 and the mass migration indoors, now is the time to take more vitamin D – not just for skin moisture, hair restoration and overall renewal, but also for mood enhancement and immune support. A few foods that are rich in vitamin D are cod liver oil, oily fish (such as sardines and salmon), beef liver and eggs. The plant-based vitamin D2 is found in mushrooms, fortified drinks, and cereals. Vitamin A Known as a natural exfoliant, this one’s found in foods such as the pumpkin family, carrots, and mangoes.

BEAUTY
Enjoy the autumn harvest Avocados are currently in season, are rich in vitamins E, K, C and B, and can aid in balancing skin tone. Lifestyle A few simple lifestyle enhancements can make all the difference – both in how you look, and how you feel! Beauty sleep Give yourself plenty of good-quality sleep to improve collagen production, and to increase blood flow - to the skin for radiance, and to the scalp for better hair product absorption. Exfoliate your skin It’s best to exfoliate about once or twice a week to remove dead skin cells and allow the newer skin to surface. Be careful not to over-exfoliate, and try using natural, in-season fruit enzymes such as: - Papain in papaya to break down proteins for soft, smooth and even-toned skin - Bromelain in pineapple - an antiinflammatory with vitamin C Moisturise Ideally, you should be moisturising about once or twice a day. For extra dry skin, choose skin and hair products that have a naturally-derived emollient, such as shea or cocoa butte, jojoba or castor oil, to name a few. Let your hair down Hair shedding is worsened by traction hair styles, so it’s best to wear your hair loose during this time of renewal. Stay hydrated If it’s too cold to drink an ice-cold glass of water, try to sustain hydration with warmer drinks, such as hot water with lemon, honey, ginger, turmeric, apple cider and cinnamon, or herbal teas. Alternatively, you can indulge in a mug of warm, decant and utterly delicious dark cacoa (70% or more cacao), which is rich in antioxidants and flavanols for smooth and hydrated skin. Last but certainly not least, spend a leisurely autumn evening enjoying a slow stroll and breathing in the fresh air as you embrace the changes in both yourself and your environment.

Vibrant Veggies & Magnificent Microgreens By Juliet Almendro
A step-by-step guide to growing at home
A
lthough planting, nurturing, and harvesting your own produce can be rewarding and filled with fun, it can also be a quite daunting experience for those of us who don’t know how or where to start.
Here are some of our top tips on creating a thriving veggie garden in your own space: 1. Build a raised plant bed The soil in a raised bed is often less compacted, and will drain better than soil in the ground. Additionally, having raised beds will make it much easier for you to spot any pest issues, as your crops will be higher off the ground. And that’s not to mention how much your back will thank you! 2. Place your plant bed in a prime position Be sure to choose a spot that receives full sun for most of the day so that your crop can photosynthesize optimally. 3. Add high-quality soil, compost, and some fertiliser This combination will ensure a healthy environment for your seeds to prosper, as it will stimulate plant growth and aid water retention. 4. Plant your crop in a triangular formation By planting in this way, you’ll create an extra bit of room for your veggies to grow. This, in turn, will reduce their risk of stress, disease, and insect invasion. Alternatively, you can encourage vining crops to climb upwards by adding trellises on the sides of your raised bed.
66 \\ W W W. W E L L N E S S W A R E H O U S E . C O M
By doing this, you’ll allow the vining crops to enjoy improved air circulation, which can reduce the potential of them experiencing fungal diseases. Simply secure your trellises to sturdy end posts with string or nylon mesh and tie your vines to the trellis. 5. Border your veggies with natural security Plant some parsley or marigold around the edges of your plant bed to keep pests away. 6. Water generously once a week Water your veggies heavily once a week, instead of a little bit every now and then. This will force the roots to reach further down into the soil to get moisture, thus improving self-sufficiency. 7. Harvest regularly and remove old blooms This will encourage new growth. As an alternative, you can also plant your crops in succession to allow you to grow more than one type of vegetable per season. For example, you could follow an early crop of lettuce with a fast-maturing corn, followed by more greens. Just be sure to replenish the soil each time you replant.
The best veggies to grow in a raised plant bed: • • • • •
Root vegetables Leafy greens Onions Tomatoes Potatoes
For those of you without a garden, don’t worry! You can still grow your own delicious greens, without even setting foot outside. Microgreens are not only jam-packed with a tremendous amount of nutrients, but also really easy to grow.
Microgreens… 1. May help prevent chronic disease 2. Are high in vitamins (especially vitamins A, C, E and K), minerals, and antioxidants 3. May assist in lowering cholesterol and blood pressure 4. Contain 40 times more nutrients than their mature plant counterparts 5. May aid in weight management as part of a balanced, healthy diet 6. Are considered a probiotic, as they feed good gut bacteria
What you need to grow microgreens: • Sprouting seeds • A glass or ceramic container with a lid • A growing mat or pad (hemp, coconut, jute, or natural fibre) • Water • Light (natural or artificial) • A mist spray bottle for watering • Scissors to harvest
How to grow microgreens: 1. Soak your seeds for six to eight hours, or according to package specifications. 2. Soak the growing mat and place it in a container or baking dish. 3. Spread the seeds out as evenly as possible and ensure that they remain moist until they sprout. 4. Cover the container with a lid and place it near a light source during this same stage. 5. Remove the lid once most of the seeds have sprouted. 6. Water daily with a mist spray bottle, aiming at the roots. 7. Once there are about four or more leaves present on the plant, harvest by cutting the shoots just above ground level with a pair of scissors.

“As much as childbirth is similar, it’s also an extremely individual experience. It can be very different for each woman depending on their physical, emotional, mental, spiritual, cultural and genetic wellbeing,” shares Friedman. After attending almost 550 births and having a wealth of experience under her belt, there is still one particular birth that has stuck with her over the years. She remembers the awe of witnessing a successful ‘mermaid’ or ‘veiled’ birth, wherein the baby was born en caul – a rare event in which the amniotic sac remained whole, and the baby was birthed within its jelly-like bubble. The doctor gently encouraged the sac open, and the baby greeted the world for the very first time on its mother’s chest. “I would say that was probably the most magical birth that I’ve ever witnessed. The mother’s bravery and ability to just give her body over to such an intense experience, and the baby coming out fully intact - where the water hadn’t even burst yet…what a beautiful miracle it was,” she shares. As rewarding and enjoyable as it is to be a doula, it can also be challenging. When a doula is on call, they have to drop everything at a moment’s notice and fully commit to being present and with the parents for the next 12 - 24 hours, often running on little to no sleep, which can lead to exhaustion and burnout. It is, therefore, crucial to always have a backup doula. Additionally, doulas often struggle to gain access to hospital labour rooms, as they are not officially part of the medical team, and therefore need to create a trusting relationship with your medical birthing team before being granted access to your room. Thus, it’s best to choose a doula who is certified and educated, as this can significantly improve the likelihood of your doctor allowing them to be present during your labour. WOMBS and other doula training organisations certify doulas through a three-hour written exam and a sixmonth course on labour etiquette (which includes the scope of practice and code of ethics), as well as natural pain relief methods.

A doula’s top tips for childbirth preparation: 1. Educate yourself Read up on positive vaginal birth experiences, and research C-sections and emergency care so that if an issue arises, you’ll have an understanding of the process. 2. Attend antenatal classes Go to some antenatal classes with your partner so that you can both learn about and prepare for breastfeeding, early parenting, newborn baby behaviour, and more. 3. Connect with others Reach out to your family and friends who have had babies, and other pregnant women for moral support and advice. 4. Find a doula Allow yourself to find comfort in having an emotional and mental support professional right beside you throughout the entire birthing process. 5. Stay active Swim, do yoga, and spend time walking in nature for light, easy cardio. 6. Eat well Nourish both your and your baby’s developing bodies to boost and maintain overall health. 7. Get a lactation consultant Have your questions answered, and receive advice and assistance from a professional on any breastfeeding issues, such as poor milk supply, trouble latching, and breast pain.

Self-Care The New Healthcare By Chantell Claasen
W
hen we hear the term self-care, our minds typically wander to expensive skincare products and body scrubs that we’re sure will instantly change our lives, as having glowing skin means we have our lives together - right? There is no rigid definition of self-care, and each different derivative can be as valuable as the next.
remains, in every “ Self-care form, a personal choice that
involves making certain changes and decisions to improve your daily lifestyle. It encompasses all the necessary steps you take to make sure that your body and soul are well cared for.
“
One of the most impactful facets of selfcare involves self-love. In fact, it begins and ends with self-love. On the inside, consciously learning to love yourself includes continuously challenging your self-limiting internal dialogue, and how this causes you to show up for yourself in the world. The Self-Care Trend Social media has had a huge impact on self-care. As health and wellness become more widely advertised and users share their experiences, the topic seems to be everywhere! Yet very few people truly understand what self-care is outside of pretty bath bombs and avocado face masks. It’s important to pay attention to the different kinds of self-care that aren’t necessarily as aesthetically pleasing or ‘insta-worthy’.

“Almost everything will work again if you unplug it for a few minutes - including you.” - Anne Lamott
Move in a Way You Love Practise self-care by taking care of your physical body. This doesn’t mean you have to do cardio or go to the gym every day, but it does mean that you should explore ways in which you can incorporate movement into your daily life. - Listen to your body Some days may call for vigorous exercise, and others more gentle yoga or stretching. - Mix it up A balanced exercise regime can include everything from running, cardio and HIIT to yoga, pilates and dance. - Get your people involved In doing so, you can hold each other accountable while scheduling some healthy and wholesome quality time into the midst of your busy schedules. - Rest & restore Remember to dedicate at least one day a week to rest and recovery.
“Self-care is how you take your power back.” - Lalah Delia
Tend to Your Mind Our minds are incredibly powerful and can influence our physical and emotional wellbeing. The kinds of thoughts you have will directly affect your ability to process your emotions and daily stressors. Here are some ways you can consciously work to nurture your mind: - Practise positive self-talk Be as gentle and kind to yourself as you would be to a beloved friend. - Treat yourself You deserve that manicure/day of reading at the pool you’ve been yearning for! - Pace yourself Try not to take on too many tasks at once, as this will ultimately cause you unnecessary stress. - Seek out inspiration Choose a book, movie, or podcast that you can return to daily for renewed motivation. - Try a contemplative practice There are so many options to be found online and in your community, with meditation, journalling, yoga, gratitude and pranayama (breathing exercises) top of our list.

Live with Intention By Nicky Rowbotham

ntentionality is centred in individuality. It’s based on the practice of identifying what is truly important and what creates meaning in your life, regardless of how you think it ‘should’ look or feel. In stepping away from external expectations and tuning into what is actually important to us, we reframe our unique notions of success. Is it perhaps to be found in joy, happiness, love, connection, easefulness and health, rather than through a large house, list of accolades, and accumulation of possessions? As time flies by, we can either allow it to slip past us as we wander around in an autopilot trance, or we can intentionally create richness in our lives.
is curated not from “ Richness how much we do, but rather how present we are in our own lives.
“
For too long, we have postponed joy as a destination, with conditions around what will finally make us ‘happy’. The proverbial ‘when’ is used to represent potential happiness. When we finally reach a certain weight, buy that house, achieve that goal, or get that job. However, often when we arrive at that destination, we realise that these things alone do not bring us joy. Joy starts within us, and we don’t need to become
74 \\ W W W. W E L L N E S S W A R E H O U S E . C O M
or achieve anything to bask in it. We are already enough and worthy of receiving joy just as we are. If the global pandemic has taught us anything, it is that ticking boxes, checking lists, and rushing through life unconsciously will not foster magic. Magic is to be found in becoming conscious and more present, appreciating and embracing the now, slowing down, savouring moments, and finding the joy in the small things that ultimately become the big things in life. Moments of shared laughter, hugs, connection, holding hands, and marvelling in nature are often some of my fondest memories. We should no longer take these moments for granted. If we’re lucky, we have about 960 months to live this amazing life with which we have been blessed. Yet many of us never take the steps to really create it with intention. We postpone happiness and often set aside our dreams as we are ‘too busy’ doing things driven by expectation or childhood conditioning. Instead, we need to do less and rather focus on being more for ourselves first and foremost. As Nightbirde said after revealing that she was fighting cancer on America’s Got Talent…
can’t wait until life isn’t “ You hard anymore before you decide to be happy. “
Happiness is already within us all. Like gratitude, the more we embrace happiness, stop chasing gold stars of validation outside of ourselves and take time to look around, the more joy we find we already have. For me, creating an intentional life is all about creating and experiencing more easefulness, joy, happiness, connection, and alignment within my life. This requires consistent daily effort and the addition of small intentions in my thoughts, feelings, and relationships. What we take on, what we say no to, and what we say yes to creates a consciousness that permeates how we show up for a more intentional lifestyle. While you can’t always force and control things, be clear about your intentions and goals, whilst remaining flexible in how you achieve them. It is important to remember that trying to manage something that is outside of your control only creates stress and anxiety. Instead, allow life to happen for you as you take steps towards your goals. It is often difficult to know where to start, and I felt motivated to create the Intentional Life Journal as part of my proudly South African INSPIRED | CHANGE range of journals. It’s a tool you can use to create more intentionality in how you show up, create and experience magic, moments, and memories in life, rather than remaining on autopilot, chasing a checklist of tasks, and remaining stunted in busyness.

It’s time to create a life list of how you want life to feel, rather than a bucket list of things you want to do, see or acquire.

Your Inner Voice By Dan Moyane
P
icture this: a 10-year-old boy is lying on the grass in the backyard of his parents’ home in Soweto, gazing at the moon, trying to see the American astronauts who are reported to have landed there, as if it were possible to spot them so far away in space. It’s all over the news and the boy’s curiosity makes him think that he might see the men on the moon. The news about the US moon landing in 1969 stirs something deep inside the boy, a voice that would intensify as he grows older. As a 10-year-old, he cannot articulate it as clearly as he would come to do in his teenage years. But the message is loud and strong – I don’t want to die unknown. Later, as the years went by, the voice would guide me when I faced unfamiliar situations. Well, I have called it an inner voice but it’s really like a voice in my head or a feeling deep inside my gut that pops up at crucial times in my life. Looking back, I remember how, as a 10-year-old boy, I heard this inner voice saying something like, “Well, the American astronauts will forever be known as the first people on the moon. Wouldn’t it be sad for me to have lived on this earth and die unknown or known only to my immediate family, relatives, and friends?” As I grew older, the sentiment intensified. It guided me. I cannot pretend or claim that it was easy to follow, because sometimes doubt creeps in. So how do you know for sure that this inner voice, this thought or deep feeling, is for real? What role does your environment play? I grew up in a tough environment in Soweto in the 1960s and 1970s, but this did not stop me from dreaming of a better life for myself and my family. We all want a better life for ourselves. Only you can shape what it looks like.

I wanted to be a medical doctor when I grew up. But I ‘fell’ into the media space because I needed to find a job and earn a living after I arrived in Maputo as a 20-year-old in 1979, running away from apartheid security police. I used to write what I regarded as poems, and one day in 1979 I found the courage to go to the offices of the local weekly Tempo magazine to ask them to publish a poem I had written about Soweto. I did not know anyone at Tempo, which used to dedicate several back pages to poetry. The possibility of rejection was real. But something from deep inside me propelled me. I tell this story not because Tempo published the poem under my African name, Tsakane, in a September 1979 edition, but because I listened to the voice from deep within, and that act alone opened the door to another opportunity – and a bigger one, at that.
all have an inner voice. “We What we need the most is to trust it when it speaks. “
It speaks to us in different and unique ways. With me, it sits in the depths of my gut, gnawing away - unsettling until I acknowledge it and act accordingly. My father died in December 2007 and for weeks before his death, I had this deep feeling that I needed to move on to a new chapter in my career. I had no idea what that would be. I even had a brief conversation with my dad
about possible change. My inner voice grew louder with each passing month until my father passed on. After his funeral, I returned to work and resigned from my job. His death marked a new beginning for me. The voice went silent. Sometimes it takes life-changing or significant occurrences in our lives to respond to our inner voice. Being brave is uncomfortable, but when you listen to your inner voice - somehow things naturally fall into place.

Keeping Track of Your Finances As a Small Business Owner By Montaque Swanepoel
A
s accountants, we are often asked, “Why is bookkeeping important?”
As this question has come up regularly in recent interactions with our clients, we thought it might be useful to explain why a (good) bookkeeping system is essential for any growing business… Not missing expenses (and the tax benefit of those expenses) The first rule of good tax planning is to make sure that you claim all allowable business expenses. In the chaos of a business, some expenses are paid with personal funds and others in cash or with personal credit cards, and slips often get lost as time goes by. It’s little wonder that it can be a challenge to try to consolidate everything months later, or at financial year-end. Regular bookkeeping is the simplest solution to this problem. Knowing where you stand Information is key, and the balance of your checking account is not your profit. Knowing where you stand in real-time with cloud-based bookkeeping systems is valuable information for any business owner. Knowing that things are not going as planned allows you to make changes to rectify the situation before it gets out of hand. It also allows you to know when things are going right, and when you should keep doing what is currently working.
Estimating your tax liability during the year Few things in life are certain, and as the saying goes, tax is one of them. Tax season can be a daunting experience for many business owners, especially if you don’t have a clear idea of your tax liability. With a good bookkeeping system in place, you can always have a good idea of your profits and be able to make a sound estimation of your profit tax liability. A good bookkeeping system also gives you a good sales tax liability balance. This allows you to keep some funds aside for when the payment is due. As far as business goes, knowing what’s coming is certainly better than constant surprises! Tax season becomes a breeze Collecting and summarising all your financial information just before tax season is a bit like cramming for a big exam the night before – you may pass, but you know that you could have done better and experienced a lot less stress. Doing your bookkeeping during the year makes tax season much less stressful, and with the right system giving your tax accountant the right information, it really is as simple as ticking a couple of boxes.
Perhaps your business has a fixed fee every month. For that, you can set up a repeating invoice. Maybe you issue an invoice for every task or service. For that, your staff can invoice on a tablet the moment they are done. A good modern bookkeeping system even allows time tracking, project tracking and a host of other integrations that make invoicing from many other systems a breeze. For some businesses, invoicing alone is reason enough to get a good bookkeeping system in place. Happy bookkeeping!

Overcome Your Money Fears By Jean Archary
M
y relationship with money has been fraught with challenges over the course of my life. In my first few years, money was plentiful. I lived a life of luxury, and experienced true financial abundance. However, at the age of eight, my entire world changed. My mom, without a career, income or financial support, became the sole provider for four kids under the age of 10. Life was challenging for us after that, as we moved into a drastically different financial situation – from riches to rags, abundance to scarcity, and financial wellness to financial insecurity. Yet this shift that caused me to remain in survival mode for much of my life would also lead me to discover my true purpose. My challenging childhood experience led me to realise how important financial security is to one’s well-being, and how I can help empower individuals to make the best decisions about money and avoid the mistakes many of us make. My point of view, for many years, was founded in survival, and my goals were oriented accordingly: finish school, receive a university degree, earn an income, avoid debt, and survive. If we compare my mindset to that of someone who was raised with entrepreneurial values, we would find a multitude of differences. From how we think about finances to the decisions we make, our thoughts and beliefs about finances are often constructed from the preconditioning and pre-cautioning advice from our parents. Like most things in life, it is our mindset that plays the most vital part in our success. Leaving a secure, comfortable income to start my own business and pursue my passion to empower others was the
78 \\ W WW WW. W.W WEELLLLNNEESSSSW WAARREEHHOOUUSSEE..CCOOM M
toughest decision I have made in my life thus far - especially as a single mom - but it was a risk I was willing to take. After much planning, deliberating and sacrifice, this decision would ultimately allow me to overcome my biggest fear and fulfil my purpose. I did question my sanity on a few occasions as I made the potentially insane move to walk away from income security and a senior position in a company amidst a global pandemic. The first week following my resignation was an especially anxious time as I panicked about what would happen if my plan didn’t work out… Would I lose all my savings if I failed? And how could I teach others about financial wellness if I was not financially well myself? These thoughts continued to plague me until I realised that this insecurity was a necessary part of my journey as an entrepreneur, and of being an advocate for financial wellness. How could I teach others about financial wellness if I could not resonate with what they experience, think and feel? This aspect of resonating with one’s clients is not something that I was taught when I became a Certified Financial Planner. Instead, my courses focused solely on the technical skills needed to help clients plan for their financial success, and ignored the secondary requirement of the emotional relationship clients have with money. Before working with clients to secure their financial wellness, I needed to reflect and work through my own personal challenges and up-skill by attending self-development workshops and coaching programmes, as well as
connecting with my spiritual self through meditation to be able to transform into the professional I needed to be. Here are a few tips I’ve used to work my way through panic, anxiety and worry about money: 1. Identify the concern you have, as awareness is the first step to wellness 2. Focus on the solution of your issue, not the problem 3. Write a plan of small steps, and take one step each day 4. Meditate to connect with your deeper spiritual self 5. Practise daily visualisation, seeing yourself overcoming the challenges you face 6. Create a vision board 7. Repeat one affirmation frequently throughout the day to shift your mindset 8. Read, learn or listen to anything motivational and inspirational 9. Find a ‘pick-me-up buddy’ who will make you feel better even on your darkest days 10. Remind yourself that this too shall pass

Jardim Organic Family Farm By Teneal Da Fonseca
Situated in the quaint village of Noordhoek, Jardim is a fairy tale destination for the whole family. The grounds were purchased by Angela and Justin Gomes in 2015, and the couple transformed it into an organic farm and source of nourishment for their family, staff and guests. Their reminder to the guests they welcome across their threshold is to slow down and remember the simpler times, before life was dictated by the hustle and bustle of the daily grind. Their home-grown veggie garden soon became the driving force behind their delicious fresh produce, and the farm and greenhouse have been transformed from repurposed elements found on the farm. For Angela and Justin, the beginning of spring and summer is signalled by the wandering guests strolling across their luscious, green fields. From lowbudget travellers to those interested in sustainable agriculture and authentic accommodation, it’s a perfect escape from the city, and a place to take the whole family. It’s no wonder thousands of students, working professionals, honeymooners
and families visit the farm each year. Being able to meander through the grounds, pick your own fresh produce, and learn about the importance of sustainability is a truly unique offering. Tinashe, the head gardener on the farm, carefully curates a display of perfectly assorted picked produce that’s available for purchase by guests, collection by visitors, or delivery to homes. He is a masterful storyteller, and his passion and love for gardening radiate through him as he guides guests on tours of the grounds. He’ll teach you how to correctly pick the ripest, most appetising veggies to take home and transform into exquisite meals. If you’re not able to visit the farm, you can always place an order, making farmto-table eating a reality for yourself and your family. The Jardim team is also behind many incredible community initiatives, including the Masi Creative Hub, through which they teach the residents of Masiphumelele how to grow their own food. estled in a valley amongst the breathtaking Cederberg mountains lies the Bliss & Stars Wilderness Retreat, which curates personalised experiences to encourage and inspire becoming present within oneself and one’s surroundings through meditation, movement, nourishment, naturedwelling, and astronomy. After years of living a high-paced, career-focused life, Daria and Heine Rasmussen rediscovered nature’s healing powers and decided that it was time for a change. In order to pursue a life brimming with nature’s goodness, they sold all their belongings and wandered throughout South Africa in search of a space to cultivate nature’s radical wellness powers, this time for all to enjoy. After just a few months, they stumbled upon the banks of the Doring River and knew immediately that it was the perfect place to build their new dream from the ground up. In their commitment to sustainability, they decided to only use solar-powered energy, efficient waste management systems, organic on-site produce, and a biodegradable skincare line to encourage guests to honour and respect the environment that nourishes and heals them. Bliss & Stars aims to mirror the natural surroundings in all offerings, and the menu is a perfect illustration of this ideology. The nutritious and wholesome, plant-based cuisine is designed to strengthen and nurture the mind-body connection. They only source local, highquality ingredients and run a rotational, seasonal menu. Each meal is enjoyed in a communal space, as they believe that coming together to share a meal with others inspires discussion and an exchange of ideas, as well as forming connections and a widened lens.

The Art of Learning from Nature Imitating Life’s Genius with Biomimicry
C
laire Janisch (Director of BiomimicrySA, CEO of Learn Biomimicry, and a Certified Biomimicry Professional) grew up with a deep love of nature as a child. When she chose a career path, she wanted to make an active difference in changing humanity’s devastating environmental footprint. Diving straight into the belly of the beast of one of the biggest polluters in the industry, she decided to obtain her MSc Chem-Engineering in Industrial Ecology. Janisch was especially interested in sustainable development, and remembers thinking how surreal it is that the chemical manufacturing industry refines oil and produces hazardous materials and toxins that can’t be reintegrated into nature. In the natural world, waste like peels and dead leaves are decomposed before being reintegrated into the cycle of life, but we’ve been doing the exact opposite and are paying the price for ignoring the genius of the natural world. Ten years ago, Janisch embarked on an intensive programme to become a Certified Biomimicry Professional. The course, which was in its infancy at the time, combined biology, engineering, design and business, and explored the myriad ways these fields can inform each other. It was during this time that Janisch visited six vastly different ecosystems around the world. From the wet and hot climate of the Amazon Rain Forest to the cold, arid Arizona desert, she was learning how to draw inspiration from nature to answer and speak to contemporary challenges. What is biomimicry? Biomimicry is essentially innovation that’s inspired by nature. Bio (life) + mimicry (to mimic/imitate) = to mimic life
82 \\ W W W. W E L L N E S S W A R E H O U S E . C O M
is the practice of “Biomimicry learning from and emulating
nature’s genius to create products, processes and systems that are sustainable and resilient - even regenerative.
“
According to Janisch, biomimicry can be thought of as a design process, a branch of science, a problem-solving method, a sustainability ethos, a movement, a stance toward nature, and a new way of viewing and valuing biodiversity. It is as broad as the diversity of life itself, and is grounded in its pursuit to imitate nature to find solutions to engineering, design and other challenges we face today. The field isn’t exactly novel; biomimicry was practised by many native cultures. For example, the Inuit used to mimic the way that polar bears built their dens by modelling their igloos after the structures, while other isolated cultures looked to animals to know which plants were safe to eat or use for medicine. Even Leonardo da Vinci used it to solve many of his engineering challenges. Yet slowly over time we’ve distanced ourselves so much from the natural world that we started to forget that there is wisdom to glean from it in the first place. That’s why Janisch asserts that it’s only fitting that we think of biomimicry as the re-emergence of a formal discipline based on ancient cultures. We’re surrounded by the answers. We simply need to turn away from the industrial and towards the natural. How has it been used? If you look at the materials that exist in the natural world – whether tough, light-weight, strong or flexible – they’re all made at ambient temperature. Spiderwebs are spun by cold-blooded spiders; mussel shells produce a non-
toxic glue that can stick under cold water despite being made at sea-water temperature; while some sea shells are tougher than human-made ceramics. If we can learn how to move away from toxic processes that produce materials under high pressures and extreme temperatures, we’re not only going to solve a chemical and recycling problem, but also an energy consumption problem. For example, by understanding how spiders spin their webs one protein at a time and then exploring the ways we can connect those proteins in a similar way, scientists have been able to invent a new super-strength, light-weight fibre that could replace other more toxic materials. Similarly, by mimicking the natural glue of mussels, engineers have been able to invent a biodegradable glue that can be used to stick plywood together. And other companies have been able to create a type of mushroom that helps with treating contaminants to clean up polluted land. From architects designing cities to function like carbon-absorbing forests to inventing plastic inspired by the exoskeleton of insects, and drawing inspiration from the feet of geckos to invent machine suctions, there is no limit to the myriad ways biomimicry can be applied and adapted to make a sustainable impact on the world. What is the regenerative impact of biomimicry? Biomimicry goes beyond just being sustainable to being regenerative. For example, in the agricultural sector, it can help with repairing and rebuilding an entire region’s soil health, air quality and water systems, rather than just eliminating one specific problem. When we look at our water and energy systems, organisations and economies, it’s crucial to reconsider how we can

™
create less destructive and more life-enhancing conditions. What if our cities functioned like ecosystems? Not just urban centres with separate green spaces that are closed off in a nature reserve somewhere, but a city that functions like a catchment area using sustainable water drainage systems to distribute water to everyone. Imagine if we were to integrate wetlands and plants in our cities or recycle carbon in the same way that a forest does, working to clean the air rather than to pollute it? What if humans actually left a regenerative footprint that provided ecosystem services in everything they did – from home to city level? Who is it for? Biomimicry isn’t just for engineers, scientists or professionals. It can be for everyone. In the wise words of Janisch, conservation begins from a place of affection. “If you love something, you care for it. And if you study and look to nature for inspiration, knowledge, and wisdom, you will fall in love with it and never be able to look at a tree the same way again. If you want to fall in love with nature and learn from its incredible designs, or you simply want to learn more about the practice of permaculture, you are a biomimic.” Depending on whether you’d like biomimicry to be an inspiration or a vocation, there are plenty of ways you can learn more about this fascinating field. Learn Biomimicry (learnbiomimicry. com) offers various short courses, masterclasses and wildlife immersion expeditions to help you grow in the art of leaning from nature. Alternatively, if you’d like to take the specialty route, you can enroll for the same two-year course that Janisch completed to become a Certified Biomimicry Professional, or
choose a sub-branch of biomimicry as your Master’s topic in a relevant field of research. The world is our oyster, filled with endless possibilities to explore and implement in an effort to become more circular in what we produce. Nature holds the key to how we can create a sustainable, flourishing future.

lant-based eating is on the increase globally, with the lifestyle showing a particularly significant explosion over the past few years. A rising awareness of the health impact of meat consumption coupled with a growing consumer conscience around ethically produced and environmentally sustainable food is to thank for the landslide movement. The majority of people choose to go plant-based for one or more of three fundamental reasons: Health • Meat and dairy products contain a large amount of the saturated fats that can contribute to cardiovascular health challenges. • Farmed animals and fish are fed a wide variety of drugs to fatten them faster and keep them alive in conditions that would otherwise kill them. These drugs enter the human food chain either through direct consumption or pollution of our waterways. • Plant-based foods provide phytochemicals – biologically active compounds that help prevent and heal the body from cancer, boost protective enzymes and work with antioxidants in the body. • Vegans tend to eat more nuts, seeds and dark leafy greens, all of which are excellent sources of magnesium - which can help increase energy, calm nerves, improve digestion, relieve muscle aches and spasms, and more. • A vegan diet is generally higher in fibre than those in which plants are not the primary source of nutrition. • Vegans tend to eat diets rich in whole grains, which are particularly beneficial in lowering high blood pressure. • Several population studies have shown that a diet without meat leads to a lower average Body Mass Index (BMI), which is usually an indicator of a healthy weight. • Vegans tend to eat more nuts and vegetables rich in vitamins A and E. These contribute towards healthy skin, and those switching to a vegan diet often report a noticeable reduction in
84 \\ W W W. W E L L N E S S W A R E H O U S E . C O M
blemishes (this could also be due to the elimination of dairy). • A diet high in grains, nuts and dark leafy greens is full of vitamin E, which has benefits for heart, skin, eyes and brain health. • Countries where women eat very little meat and animal products have a much lower incidence of breast cancer than those in which they consume more animal products. • Several studies indicate that those following a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle live an average of three to six years longer than those who do not. Ethics • Most agree that animals are sentient - that they are living, feeling beings that experience pleasure and pain. Almost all ‘use’ of animals for food, clothing, vivisection and entertainment includes the suffering or dying of animals. • Over 150 billion land animals are slaughtered each year for human consumption. If we add the 2.8 trillion fish, marine animals, and even bees and silkworms, this figure goes into the multiple trillions. It’s estimated that each vegan saves over 100 animals a year. • On today’s factory farms, animals can be kept in cramped, cruel and oppressive conditions. Many will never be permitted to raise families or do anything else that’s natural and important to them. Some won’t even get to feel the warmth of the sun on their backs or breathe fresh air until the day they’re sent off for slaughter. Environment • Raising animals for food produces more greenhouse gas emissions than all cars, planes, and other forms of transportation combined. • Raising animals for food (including land used for grazing and growing feed crops) now uses no less than 30% of the Earth’s total land mass.
• Nearly 80% of land deforested in the Amazon is now used as cattle pasture. • The amount of water required to produce a kilo of beef is estimated at between 13,000 and 100,000 litres. The water required to produce a kilo of wheat is somewhere between 1,000 to 2,000 litres. • Pollution of our waterways is caused by animal waste, antibiotics and hormones entering the water cycle alongside chemicals from tanneries, fertilisers, and the pesticides used to spray feed crops.
If you’re moved and motivated by these sound reasons to ditch animal products in your diet and lifestyle, you may be wondering where to start.
