THE PRACTICAL GARDENING COMPANY

Soap and Porridge

As a very small child, thoughts of his grandfather made Tom Cross remember the blue colour of the formica kitchen table but even more strongly, the smell of soap and porridge. The soap was Imperial Leather so shape was important, too.

Tom engaged with library users of all ages to gather ideas. Artist Tom then liaised with writer Aoife Mannix to create the other pieces on show. To extend the exhibition and engage with visitors who are reluctant to enter libraries at the moment, Soap and Porridge was digitised on twitter https:// twitter.com/SoapPorridge. To learn more, you could visit https://tomxarts.wordpress. com/about/work-in-libraries/. You will have the opportunity to interact with the artworks on dispay and share your own memories including colour, shape, and most of all, smell. This is open to all.

For many of us, smell is the sense which gives us the strongest emotional response. The visit of the exhibition to Wendover Community Library in October will be the last stop of its summer tour. During this time, visitors have been asked to write down any smells which remind them of happy or sad memories. Why not go along and be inspired by the examples shown there?
