Wendover Evening WI in 2021

What a year that was!

The Wendover Evening WI Committee has taken a proactive approach to maintaining contact with their membership during the entire pandemic, including the challenges which 2021 brought. Wendover WI has remained positive and has capitalised on activities which the restrictions permitted.

Being a forward-looking organisation, the group transitioned from pre-COVID face-to-face meetings to meeting on-line, fully embracing technology, including WhatsApp and Zoom which enabled: • Wendover Evening WI WhatsApp Group • Regular online contact with members • Monthly virtual speakers • Quizzes • Committee Meetings • Online Denman cookery demonstration whilst the WI members cooked. Once the Turkish cuisine was ready, members sat in front of screens with a glass of wine enjoying a virtual communal meal.

Since the return of face-to-face meetings, the Club has gone from strength to strength. Read more about the activities of 2021 at https://bit. ly/34SBsUV.

Wendover Bowls Club

The indoor season has almost run its course. Sadly some clubs have been unable to raise teams and we have had several cancelled matches. I am afraid the dreaded Covid has much to answer for as people seem to have got out of the idea of going out. The poor old Parrot House (the lean-to along the back of the clubhouse) is looking very sorry for itself, as it is being rebuilt. We may not have it for the start of the outdoor season in a month. Our green has had rather a bad time of it this winter with rooks tearing up great swathes of it looking for lunch. We resorted to two toy kites tethered to poles, which zoom about in the wind. They have been quite effective and the damage has decreased dramatically. It will be wonderful to get out again and play on grass - with any luck being able to watch the action from our splendid new Parrot House. Don Knight

Wendover Horticultural Society

We really feel that we are coming out of Covid, having had good attendances so far. We are arranging a number of outings this year, the first one to the RHS gardens at Hyde Hall, in Essex on Wednesday, 30 March. Cost £27. The next one is in June. The March monthly meeting (3 March, 2pm, St Anne's Hall) will be Pete and Jenny from Preston Bissett Nurseries, and is about “Summer and late summer planting for herbaceous borders and small gardens”.
