UNIVERSITY TEMPLE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH
PEACE AND JUSTICE CENTER Adaptive Reuse Project
Term: Winter 2020 Academic Project This Peace and Justice center will focus on Youth Homelessness. My take on youth homelessness is to provide the youth with support and guidance, assuring them that they have the power to overturn their fate instead of spoon feeding them and passively waiting. Thus, my program will focus on three main take: Guidance, Protection, and Community. My adaptive reuse proposal is to keep the worshipping spaces at the existing temple. As both chapels are a point of worship that carries the historical legacy in the neighborhood, this would make the new program situated: guidance and protection significant.
YOUTH RELATED ORGANIZATION
1. ROOTS 2. URBAN REST STOP 3. UNIVERSITY TEMPLE CHILDREN SCHOOL 4. TEEN FEED
13% of homeless youth report a disability
43% do not have a high school diploma
Average income at time of entry into the system is $196
EXPLOITATION
The streets make youth more vulnerable to sexual exploitation, increasing their risk of disease, injury, and death. Nationally, 19% of homeless youth have been victims of trafficking.
ARREST
Homeless youth are 2.5x more likely to be arrested as adults when compared to their stably housed peers.
MENTAL ILLNESS
Homeless youth report higher rates of mental health symptoms, including depression, PTSD, and anxiety, resulting in increased risk for suicide attempts.

SPATIAL ARRANGEMENT Adaptive Reuse Project The main chapel will be transformed into a library, lecture hall, and exhibition place whereas the new chapel will serve as the memorial. The details such as stained glass, double height ceiling makes the proposed library a perfect fit to inspire the youth while acquiring knowledge. The circulation between floors are mainly through open stairs to ensure visual and spatial connectivity. The idea of transforming the new chapel into a greenhouse like memorial is to emphasize the poetic nature that every seedling has the potential as long as they are nurtured. This is where young saplings will be grow and transfer for reforestation.

PROGRAM ARRANGEMENT Adaptive Reuse Project Most of the static activities such as listening, reading, and seeking will be situated at the older part where the original material is preserved. In contrast, the dynamic activities and lively facilities such as gathering, communicating, building will be placed at the new atrium. The new atrium also serves as a connecting point to the two old chapels, separating the function of the old facilities can provide: protection and knowledge, like parents who will provide knowledge and protection while giving freedom for us to explore. In between these two places, all the other parts will be replaced with a dynamic community space that contains classrooms, offices, cafĂŠ and a book store.

Memorial
The existing church is converted into a library, adding sound-proof glass to the balcony converting it to the lecture space. This enhances the visual connection. The exisiting roof sturcture is preserved with additional skylights to introduce natural light to the reading space.
All the dynamic activities in the new addition will be united through an open atrium with stairs connecting, realizing a lively space for gathering and communicating.
The memorial is a greenhouse that emphasize the poetic nature that every seedling has the potential to grow as long as they are porperly nurtured. Young sapplings will be grown here and transferred for reforestation.
YOUTH MEMORIAL

The outdoor space curated right outside the memorial will be an extension of the memorial, and also becoming a part of the university landscape. The setback from the street will create space and welcome the visitors through the signage.
The bookstore storefront design is to attract people to visit the Peace and Justice Center. An alternative entrance is open up to the memorial the 15th Ave to ensure that the memorial will be accesible.

POP-UP RESTAURANT Rome : Food Expo Term: Fall 2019 Academic Project (Study Abroad) A pop up restaurant design, inspired by a dish is chosen to represent the larger context of Rome. The design of the pop up restaurant should be “radical, experimental solutions,”a “laboratory” for interactive displays and direct partaking in global food culture. I choose the Malaysian traditional dish - Kuih Lapis, a dish that represent the fusion of Chinese and Malay culture. The site is located at the Circus Maximo of Rome, near Via Aventino, which acknowledge the colonization context of the nature of the dish.

Paper Making
Term : Spring 2019 Academic Project A group of artisans wants to establish a cooperative paper mill and workshop in the Ballard neighborhood of Seattle. Their primary focus is handmade paper but they produce paper-related work as well. The size of the cooperative is limited to the number of people that can sit around a large table for group meetings as well as for lunch. The cooperative supports itself by selling paper and other projects based on paper that are made on site, and by renting studio space to visiting artists.

Value within chaos
Inspired by Wolfgang capturing the chaotic nature of Lampedusa with the act of framing, it gives value to mundane objects. The piles of trash are given importance because it is captured.
Assign a value to the normal everyday life by framing it as one of the exhibited artworks, driving the attention of the viewers.

HENRY ART GALLERY Intervention proposal Term: Winter 2019 Academic Project After studying the scale and urban context of the Henry Art Gallery, Seattle, an intervention is proposed to benefit the gallery: adding an outdoor structure that functions both as an event space and an outdoor exhibition room. On the elevated floor, driven to the end by the form and an extended series stairs, the occupants will focus on the art gallery, which visibly lines up with the George Washington statue. This gives more attention to the gallery as the current geographic position is not eyecatching from both sides of the road. The lower level of this structure serves as a gathering space where outdoor exhibitions and events can be held.
