GOULD HALL EXHIBIT SPACE GOULD HALL EXHIBIT SPACE

CONNECTION + VISIBILITY

WEN QIAN CHUA | ARCH 200 AA | JUDITH SWAIN |DOUG SMITH | FALL 2017

The exhibit space features a long room with one main entrance and two side entrances at the ground level. The 1st floor is accessible from the ground level by the way of the stairs. On the 1st floor, there is also an opening, which allows connuity and enhances the eye movement while being in the exhibit space. Overall, the glass panels and windows make the small space expansive. This results in the space having both the qualies of brightness and visibility, and no arficial light is required to brighten up the room during the day.

The stairs being at the very end of the space further reiterates the importance of having a wide, obstacle free open space that contributes to the accessibility of moving around in the space. The solid walls by the stairs also serve as an alternave for exhibit use as walls are limited in this space with the use of glass panels.

Lightbath Design Project In a bustling, growing Pacific Northwest city, design a place for people to pause and cleanse with quiet and light. This project is an exploration in how light shapes the experience of a space.

Project Duration: 2 weeks, Winter 2018

LIGHTBATH DESIGN PROJECT

A D A G I O + CHOREOGRAPHY

WEN QIAN CHUA | ARCH 201 AA | LISA M GLENN | GAURA ELY | WINTER 2018 The space features a curvilinear translucent glass panel intersecting two parallel walls, with two geometrically precise overhead panels. Both panels are intentionally positioned above the walls to shape a pathway that exhibits a luminous quality, serving as an optional transition between two busy sidewalks that runs perpendicular to the entrance. During the mornings and evenings, both serving as the peak hours for the hustle of the city, the soft back drop of the luminous space echoes to the straight light pathways that is visible, creating a harmonious symphony of different intensity of light.

The right-angled triangular openings between the translucent glass panels conducts people to walk unconsciously in a circuitous route. This physical motion prompt people to slow down, taking a moment of mindfulness to beaware to the surroundings, cleansing the inundated mind, which remphasized the idea: combination of choreography (human) and light (music). The space is design in a way such that around 15-20 individuals would be able to be in the space feeling comfortable experiencing the luminous quality, regardless the time of the day.
