D E A R W E S L E YA N F A M I LY A N D F R I E N D S , I trust this edition of the Wesleyan magazine finds you in good health and safely enjoying the Christmas season with your family and friends. It is easy to be distracted by all that surrounds us in our nation and our world, and it is good to take a moment to reflect once again on why we celebrate at this time of year: the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. That is the gift that changed everything! In chapter 17 of the Gospel of John, just prior to his arrest, Jesus prays for His disciples and for all believers. “I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me. The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.” John 17:20-23 The times in which we live can easily push us away from the unity Jesus prays for in John 17, and yet, as believers in Jesus Christ, this is a critical time for the world to see us as one. What a terrific opportunity we have to send a message to the world. In spite of all of the many things that can divide us, we can be unified in our love for Jesus and our love for one another. This is how the world can understand the unconditional love and saving grace of Jesus Christ: that in the midst of discord and disagreement over elections, racial reconciliation, and COVID-19, we can still be unified and love one another because of Jesus. This fall has challenged that unity in ways we have not faced previously, and I am deeply grateful for the way our community has rallied and responded to the difficulties we have encountered. It is a tremendous privilege to lead our faculty, staff, parents, and students and to see them pull together rather than pulling apart. It is only through the grace of God that this is possible.
In addition to this challenge to our community, as a school we have faced an enemy that has the potential to be equally devastating: complacency. This would be an easy school year in which we could scale back and simply try to survive. But, that is not who God has called us to be as believers, and it is not in the DNA of Wesleyan School. In the pages that follow, you will read about the tireless efforts of our heroic faculty and staff as they continue to provide the Wesleyan experience to our students and families. You will read about our continued efforts to support students with learning difficulties through the newly built ARC facilities in Chapman Library. You will see pictures of the beautiful Hoyt Family Athletic Complex that will allow us to better serve our families, as well as guests to our campus, for cross country, football, softball, soccer, and lacrosse. You will read of our desire to be a community that is reflective of all of God’s creation and a welcoming home to all people. You will read about middle and high school thespians who found a way to provide live theater while wearing masks and being socially distant. You will read of births and marriages and of the generosity of the hearts of our donors. In short, you will read of a school community that has found a way to simply keep moving forward. A community that has not allowed the circumstances that surround us to deter us from fulfilling our mission to be a Christian school of academic excellence. Thank you for being such a wonderful community, and as we move from the celebration of Jesus’ birth into a New Year, let us renew our commitment to being one. Let us fulfill Jesus’ prayer that the world will know Him because they see something different in us: the unity of the saving grace and unconditional love of Jesus Christ. Thank you for reading this edition of the Wesleyan magazine, and may God bless you and your family in 2021.

Moments I remember, such as us all storming across Robinson Field after our final homecoming and joining in a huge circle, or freezing to death together at the state championship football game, really show what’s so unique about our class. Whether it’s on the field, the stage, or in the classroom, we are always cheering each other on, always seeking to create that unity. The teachers and facilities members are just doing a really great job, and I want them to know that we recognize that. 6TH GRADE
This fall, teachers, administrators, facilities staff, and the technology department undertook the monumental challenge of creating a safe campus environment for students to return to campus. Countless department meetings, Zoom calls, task forces, and campus preparations allowed school to start on August 12. This hard work made it possible for kindergarten through fifth grade to be fully on-campus and sixth through 12th grade to begin in a 50/50 hybrid model of learning to start the year. The sheer amount of work to prepare campus included: moving furniture in classrooms, adjusting lesson plans and teaching styles for virtual learners, and re-thinking after school activities. All of these efforts did not go unnoticed by Wesleyan students!

GETTING BACK TO CAMPUS The 2020-2021 school year has been like none other in recent memory. After ending the school year in total virtual instruction, the administration spent the summer evaluating options for how students and faculty might return to campus in August. The goal? To have students and faculty on campus as much as possible, as safely as possible, and for as long as possible. To accomplish this, the leadership team employed multiple learning models during the fall (see pg. 18) and various protocols to ensure the community’s safety and well-being. “Our biggest priority has been to keep everyone as healthy as possible during this pandemic,” said Chris Cleveland, head of school. “We also have another objective which is to have students and employees on campus and try to minimize the inevitable impact of quarantine on our community when someone tests positive.” “It was also very important to our leadership team to do our absolute best to maintain and preserve as much of the familiarity of the Wesleyan experience as possible for students, faculty, and parents,” Cleveland went on to say. “The people in our community are what makes Wesleyan so special. We wanted to keep the experience of each community member in mind as we sought to make wise and healthy decisions for how to start the year.” In July, Wesleyan announced the Campus Re-Opening Plan outlining the approach for returning to school in August. The plan addressed many areas of campus life impacted by safety measures in place during the pandemic to ensure everyone’s safety on campus. Chris Cleveland, head of school, greets students arriving for the first day of school.

LEARNING MODELS Middle and high school students wear face coverings at all times.
K – 5 | 100% ON CAMPUS Wesleyan provided all students, kindergarten through fifth grade, with the option to return to campus daily beginning in August. Lower school teachers (kindergarten through fourth grade) knew that their students needed in-person instruction as much as possible – especially for subjects like reading, phonics, and math. Fifth grade is in middle school at Wesleyan, and it is an important transitional year for students. New tablet computers and a different teacher for each subject are just two of the significant adjustments students navigate when they come to middle school.
6 – 12 | 50/50 HYBRID MODEL To start the school year, Wesleyan gave all students in sixth through 12th grade the option to return to campus in-person every other day, split alphabetically. On their off-campus days, students participated in class online. Live instruction for each period helped classes operate cohesively, even when half the class was off-campus for virtual instruction. Sixth through eighth grade had the option to return to campus 100% beginning October 5 through the end of the semester. High school students returned 100% each day beginning October 5 through November 16. Following Thanksgiving Break, high school finished the last seven class days in the hybrid model before final exams began on December 9.
K – 12 | 100% VIRTUAL INSTRUCTION Wesleyan opened the year giving all families the option to have students attend school online every day. The 100% virtual model remains an option given the various needs of families during this time, and the reality that at any point there could be students unable to attend school in person due to the Department of Health mandated isolation or quarantine.

FA C E C O V E R I N G S All middle and high school students and adults on campus are required to wear face coverings throughout the day. Students are given breaks outside where they can remove their masks temporarily for some relief. In lower school, students are required to wear face coverings when social distancing is not possible. Once they are seated at their desks, students may remove the face covering. Students are not required to wear face coverings on the playground during recess. P H Y S I C A L D I S TA N C I N G Health agencies and medical experts continue to recommend physical distancing as a mitigation measure in slowing the spread of the virus. From the beginning of the semester, faculty have worked to optimize all classrooms and spaces on campus, identifying and removing non-essential furniture to create as much spacing for students as possible. While it has not been possible to maintain six feet of distance at all times, every effort has been made to create as much space between individuals on campus whenever possible.
It was very important to our leadership team to do our absolute best to maintain and preserve as much of the familiarity of the Wesleyan experience as possible for students, faculty, and parents.
Middle school chorus students maintain six feet of distance while recording the fall chorus concert in Austin Chapel.
L A R G E G AT H E R I N G S Due to the need for social distancing, large gatherings have not operated as normal during the fall semester. At the start of the year, no large groups gathered, and instead, chapel, grade-level meetings, and more were conducted over Zoom or Microsoft Teams, while events were livestreamed over YouTube. As the semester unfolded, each division worked out various strategies to allow for gatherings with social distancing. For example, by mid-semester, all three divisions held chapel services with limited live audiences. In lower school, grade levels rotated into Bowen Cafetorium, allowing every student to attend chapel in person each week. Middle and high school alternated weeks allowing different grade levels to attend chapel in person. BEFORE AND AFTER CARE Before and after care have been available to families this semester. Lower school parents check their children in on the porch of Warren Hall instead of walking them into the building. Middle school students gather socially distanced in DuBose Dining Hall, Powell Theater, or with a teacher during office hours. High school students can meet with teachers during office hours or can gather outdoors prior to the start of school each morning. After care is available to lower school students, and each grade level divides into their own space in Warren Hall. Middle school students can participate in extended day after school utilizing both Chapman Library and the Morris-Fletcher Quadrangle.
High school mentor groups take advantage of beautiful weather and socially distance outdoors during meetings.

GETTING BACK TO CAMPUS
INDIVIDUAL SCREENING Minimizing the likelihood of a sick person coming to campus is an essential part of Wesleyan’s return to campus strategy. Every family and employee are asked to check each student’s or employee’s temperature prior to coming to campus and to assess if anyone is experiencing COVID-like symptoms. Once on campus, students and employees pass thermal cameras installed at the entrances of each building. These devices monitor an individual’s temperature on campus. They alert Wesleyan’s health services team if anyone registers a temperature above the threshold set by the school.
Thermal cameras are installed at the main entrances of each building.
Plexiglass dividers have been added to science and art classrooms, as well as front reception desks, lunch service areas, and the Spirit Shop.

W E S L E YA N COMMUNITY PLEDGE The best way for us to maintain a safe and healthy on-campus environment is to work together as a community. The more we all embrace the safety measures and guidelines including face coverings and social distancing, not only at school, but
Lower school teacher assistant Candy Stirling prays before the start of class on the first day of school.
while we are away from campus, the greater the likelihood we will be able to maintain an on-campus learning environment and do our part to limit the spread of COVID-19. Maintaining these practices is a great way to live out the JOY (Jesus, Others, Yourself) motto as these steps not only protect you but also protect the people around you. We are asking all Wesleyan community members, including students, parents, and employees, to pledge to do your best to abide by the guidelines from public health officials regarding face coverings, social distancing, and personal hygiene.
CLEANING The facilities team has continued with the detailed, daily cleaning regimen initiated in January 2020 to mitigate what began as a widespread flu season. This cleaning protocol includes the use of handheld static foggers that apply disinfectant to surfaces. The daily cleaning schedule includes doorknobs, desks, chairs, light switch covers, handrails, toilets, sinks, water fountains, tables, shelves, locker rooms, and buses. “To say our team has had to completely rethink how we ‘do’ school, thanks to the pandemic, is an understatement,” said Cleveland. “Our community has overwhelmingly supported our administration, and for that, we are grateful. Life, school, and work in a pandemic are not easy. Working together is critical as we continue to navigate the pandemic as it continues to be a reality in our lives.”
As the semester has continued, protocols have changed as needed based on recommendations from the CDC and DPH. To view updated campus protocols, visit WESLEYANSCHOOL.ORG/COVID.

S E E K J U S T I C E . L O V E K I N DN E S S . WA L K H U M B LY W I T H O U R G O D. When addressing the topics of diversity and inclusion, Wesleyan School seeks to embrace various cultures, ethnicities, talents, and socio-economic differences. With these God-given differences, we want to support everyone by empowering individuals to feel equally recognized, valued, and utilized within our community. In addition, we want to provide equitable opportunities and be a space where every student and family feels a sense of belonging.  While diversity at Wesleyan is not simply an issue of race, the events of this past summer shed light on the need for racial reconciliation across our country. These conversations hit home in our community as Wesleyan's administration spent the summer listening to and reading about experiences of people of color in our community that are not what any of us would want for any child in our school. Hurt, trauma, and frustration have been felt by both current students and alumni simply because of the color of their skin. While not every student of color has had a negative experience, there is no minimum amount of hurt acceptable to Wesleyan's leadership. Our desire is that no student or family would feel discriminated against or marginalized in any way. "In the Old Testament Book of Micah, God tells us what is good and what he requires of us: to seek justice, to love with kindness, and to walk humbly with our God," said Chris Cleveland, head of school. "The events of spring and summer 2020 were heartbreaking as we watched our country reeling. It became clear that for Wesleyan to function as the family so many of us consider it to be, we needed to discuss diversity, racism, and the experience many in our family have had at Wesleyan even more directly than we had in the past. We view this not as a political issue for our school, but rather a crucial piece of fulfilling our mission as a Christian school. "These are not easy conversations to have, but as a family, we must come together to have them. It is time for all of us to seek justice, love with kindness, and to walk humbly with our God," continued Cleveland. "So, as we do what God requires us to do, we pray that all members of the Wesleyan community will listen, engage, seek understanding, forgive, and ultimately know that it is Jesus who changes hearts."

If we believe God is who he says he is, and we are who we say we are, then the issues of diversity and inclusion must matter to us. Wesleyan School has never been a place to shy away from a challenge, and one of the hallmarks of our school is that we identify areas in which we need to improve and then commit ourselves fully to growing in that area. As an institution, we are committed to improvement in the areas of diversity, inclusion, equity, and unity to fulfill our mission to be “a Christian school of academic excellence,” to provide “a diverse, college preparatory education guided by Christian principals and beliefs,” and to develop “responsible stewardship in our changing world.” This commitment is deeply rooted in our Christian mission. If we believe God is who he says he is, and we are who we say we are, then the issues of diversity and inclusion must matter to us. In Genesis, we read that we are all made in God’s image. In Romans, we read that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” In John, we read that “God so loved the world that he sent his one and only Son” to save us. In Revelation, we read that standing before the throne of God will be people from “every nation, tribe, and language.” This Biblical model of creation, fall, redemption, and restoration is the framework for our work in diversity, inclusion, equity, and unity. This is not a new initiative. Work in this area has been ongoing for many years, including faculty professional development, intentional discussions with students, and small group Bible studies for parents exploring the topic of racial reconciliation in a Christian community. But the honesty of our students, alumni, and parents spurred by the national discourse on race this summer made it clear that we have much room for growth, and the time to accelerate that growth is now. Believing firmly that the best way to impact change is to address this heart issue in all areas of the school, Wesleyan has grown a program of diversity and inclusion awareness for all stakeholders in our community.
A D M I N I S T R AT I O N A N D FA C U LT Y Faculty and staff continue to benefit from the partnership with The Center for Civil and Human Rights which provides on-site and virtual professional development opportunities, on-campus training, and classroom resources on the topics of facilitating critical conversations, explicit and implicit bias, teaching tolerance, and building collaborative and respectful learning communities. Over the summer, faculty and administrators participated in a variety of professional development opportunities. These trainings addressed topics ranging from facilitating communities that are welcoming of all backgrounds; creating environments where listening and hearing drive work towards healing; and recruitment practices to attract and retain diversity in the faculty and administration. Wesleyan's Director of Diversity, Dr. Jennifer Pinkett-Smith, recently announced the addition of division diversity coordinators. "Teaching students about race looks different over the various seasons of childhood," said Pinkett-Smith.

"Helping students explore and understand this is everyone's responsibility on campus. But, designating a point person on faculty in each division responsible for professional development tailored to specific grade levels and awareness of how racial misunderstanding can present itself in different age groups, has been a significant expansion of our work in this area." Acacia Kelly, fourth-grade lead teacher; Indyasia Fowler, middle school science teacher; and Dr. Isiah Hill, high school science teacher, will each spearhead efforts in their respective divisions for both faculty professional development and student programming. STUDENTS Middle school students have participated in REAL Talk (or Racial Education, Awareness, and Leadership Talk) this fall. In previous years, the middle school held multiple assemblies throughout the year called "Courageous Conversations," in which they dove into topics dealing with diversity and inclusion. REAL Talk is a revamping of those same conversations with dedicated times throughout the month for follow-up discussion in our faculty-led small groups called Pack Groups. "Ultimately, the goal of REAL Talk is to create an environment here at Wesleyan that reflects the kingdom of God, where each and every student feels valued, loved, respected, and welcome," said Fowler. "Part of our Wesleyan JOY motto is to love others. Loving others well involves loving the parts of them that are different as well. We want to help educate our students on how to have positive conversations about racial and cultural differences that result in each of us loving our neighbor as ourselves." Middle school students have also been invited to join Fowler for a monthly book club. Participants will read novels written by and/or portraying the lives of people of color. The group will meet monthly to discuss what they learned from each book. Student groups in the high school have been expanded. The G.R.A.C.E. Student Diversity Club continues as students work to enhance, discuss, and support cultural diversity. Wesleyan student Danielle Kelly ‘22 and her sister Emily Kelly ‘20 have founded a student organization called “Let’s Do Better.” With the dream of becoming a national, chapter-based organization on school and university campuses across America, one of the first chapters is now operating at Wesleyan. The group’s vision is to create the world’s largest network of social and racial justice influencers. In the high school next semester, Dr. Hill will launch a new student organization called Men of Reconciliation (MORe). The goal is for MORe to become a network of male students, alumni, faculty, staff, and fathers in the Wesleyan community of all ethnicities coming together, using God's word as its foundation to promote harmony. A group for female students and community members, called FORe, is also in the works for spring semester. "We will meet virtually for the time being in groups that include different ethnicities, experiences, socio-economic backgrounds, interests, and political views," said Hill. "Our goal is to have open and honest dialogue that will open our eyes to the splendid diversity of our community. As we gain insight into the gifts that our diversity brings to the table, we can harness those gifts and utilize them in the creation of a community in which individuals of all types and kinds can feel like valued members."

C U R R E N T PA R E N T S Over the past four years, Wesleyan has offered the Be The Bridge (BTB) Bible study to our parent community. This study seeks to "achieve racial reconciliation as a reflection of our ministry of reconciliation in Christ. The concept of racial unity — many differently shaped, differently functioning body parts coming together to form a single, unified body of Christ." (Be The Bridge Discussion Guide) Studies are small groups, usually no more than ten parents, and are led by other fellow parents. Racially, the groups are intentionally diverse. Conversations are candid and open. The Bible is the lens through which issues of racial reconciliation are viewed. Since Wesleyan began offering this study to parents, over 50 families have participated. Be The Bridge will be offered again in spring 2021. Interested parents are encouraged to be on the lookout for an email after Christmas break announcing the next round of studies. Additionally in August, Dr. Pinkett-Smith announced the formation of the Wesleyan Parent Diversity Council. This group of parents will work alongside Dr. Pinkett-Smith to speak into and support diversity, inclusion, and equity efforts at Wesleyan. The parent group will: • Offer feedback that can inform diversity initiatives and programming at Wesleyan School. • Discuss topics that are relevant to a healthy experience for all students at Wesleyan. • Work in partnership with the director of diversity and the school to continue to move us forward. • Support the school to develop strong home/school partnerships. • Capture the unique and varied skills, interests, knowledge, and experience that parents can offer. ALUMNI During the summer, administrators and faculty held a socially distanced roundtable discussion with alumni to discuss the experiences of students of color at Wesleyan. These candid and personal discussions were powerful and played an important part in conversations transitioning to action in our community. The Be The Bridge Bible study was offered to alumni for the first time this summer. Held online and led by Wesleyan parent Mondria Davenport and Shelley Noble, director of alumni relations, the Bible study had 10 participants. The leadership of Wesleyan School believes we are called to view each other with the same lens through which we are seen by Jesus Christ: as individuals created in the image of God. While these conversations and the work this summer and fall in the areas of racial diversity and inclusion are healthy and necessary for growth, the work is just beginning. Space will continue to be dedicated to encourage dialogue on topics relevant to reconciliation and growth in racial and social awareness, as supported through God's word.
At the roundtable discussion, teachers, board members, and administrators listen to alumni discuss their experiences as students of color at Wesleyan.

Renovations to a portion of Chapman Library this summer may not be noticed by many, but the impact of what is happening behind the new walls will be felt throughout campus in the months and years to come. In August, Wesleyan’s new Academic Resource Center (ARC), a long-held dream by many Wesleyan faculty members, moved into the renovated space on the third floor of Wesley Hall in Chapman Library. “This space, and what will take place within and from here, has been a labor of love for a long time,” said Ramona Blankenship, associate head of school. “Karyn Vickery and her team have created an academic support program that is exceptional, unique to Wesleyan, and will support our entire student body.” Academic Support, which began in fall 2019 under the leadership of Karyn Vickery, director of academic support, brings under one umbrella the many ways Wesleyan works to ensure students in kindergarten through 12th grade are being effectively and consistently supported. The program’s goal is to assist students with learning differences in becoming independent learners while successfully meeting the demands of Wesleyan’s academic rigor and standard of excellence. These bright, well-rounded students have met the intellectual and academic criteria to be admitted to Wesleyan, yet they may have a particular challenge that can impact the way they learn. learning differences, such as dyslexia or ADHD, are empowered with self-awareness, self-advocacy, and study strategies, helping them to overcome challenges, develop their God-given strengths, and thrive at Wesleyan. The ARC is another arm of academic support that has been envisioned by administrators for many years. The program provides a tiered course of service to Wesleyan middle school students with current psycho-educational testing and active learning profiles. Participation in the ARC is optional, based on recommendation by the administration, and offers services to select students in fifth through eighth grade for a supplemental tuition fee. “Primarily, we focus on executive functioning skills,” said Vickery. “These are a set of skills that everyone is born with and develop over time, into early adulthood. The skills help us to organize and apply what we know and are needed to succeed in life and learning. Individuals develop these skills at different rates. The presence of learning differences can make learning and applying these skills particularly challenging. This has nothing to do with intellectual ability and everything to do with how students organize, manage, and respond to various demands. Our goal in the ARC is to help students identify their executive strengths and challenges and learn to apply strategies and skills that lead to academic independence.”
ARC | ACADEMIC RESOURCE CENTER
Learning specialists work with small cohorts of students using their existing coursework as a training ground for the various skills they are teaching throughout the semester. Research indicates that for executive skills to be both mastered and automatic, they cannot be taught in isolation. Rather, they must be taught in tandem with the academic curriculum. “One great study skill that can be beneficial to many students is known as ‘chunking information,’” said Patti Hallen, one of two learning specialists in the ARC.
Executive func tions help us to organize and apply what we know and are needed to succeed in life and learning. “As I was teaching this skill to the fifth grade cohort, we used the U.S. History unit they were learning at the time as an opportunity to practice applying chunking information. When it was time to study for the test, we used that material to demonstrate, and put into practice, what we had been learning. Being able to teach these skills alongside their day to day classes gives students the chance to move from theory to practice very seamlessly.” For seventh and eighth grade ARC students, Debbie Penso has focused on a variety of learning strategies that help students move from being passive to active learners. “At this age, some students can begin this transition on their own,” said Penso. “However, other students find this more of a challenge. In the ARC, we are working on active learning skills specifically in reading for meaning in all coursework and in notetaking.” While many students learn to annotate their reading in English class, Penso points out that appropriate annotation in any course’s materials is an excellent way for students to help themselves call attention to and retain important information. “We are working on ways to use highlighting, writing notes, even drawing symbols in the texts for subjects like science and history,” said Penso. “This is a great foundation for students that is usually taught in English but works really well in other subjects as well.”

Learning to make the transition from teacher-driven classwork to largely student-driven classwork, notetaking can be a challenge for many students in middle school. “We are working on the types of cues a teacher may give during a classroom lecture for students to know what to capture in their class notes,” Penso said. By folding skills support into the actual school day of ARC students, a connection is made between skills in theory and skills in practice. “We have known for years that, even in a college preparatory setting like Wesleyan, the number of students in our population with diagnosed learning differences was increasing which was also in line with the national trend,” said Blankenship. “These bright students are such an asset to our community, and helping them in their transition to independent learners is an important aspect of our academic program.” In addition to working with identified cohorts of students, the ARC team is working with the entire student body in middle school to improve executive functioning. In September, the team led a Flex Time assembly explaining executive skills, and then in Pack Groups, students took executive function surveys to learn their own strengths and weaknesses. Later in the semester, the ARC team worked with students on time management skills. They presented the topic and tips in Flex Time, and then Pack

Groups had small group discussions to dive deeper into personal application for each student. The ARC team will continue to meet with the entire middle school student body throughout the year to share additional strategies to support learning for all students. Another way the program is designed to support all students is through in-class support from the learning specialists. By pushing into middle school classrooms, the learning specialists can help to share study and executive skill strategies with students and teachers. Again, this closes the gap between theory and application, as actual content material is used to teach executive skills to all students. Teachers, in particular, have asked for this type of assistance to help learn strategies to better serve diverse learners. “The levels of support Wesleyan offers to its students are amazing, and the ARC is just one example of students being served in a truly exceptional way,” said John Creed, sixth grade boys chair. “In the classroom, learning specialists are able to give additional guidance to students, and they provide valuable feedback for individual student needs. We are also able to collaborate and plan effective lessons or strategies for upcoming material. While Wesleyan challenges students to pursue academic excellence, the resources provided through the ARC ensure that all students are put in a position to meet their goals.”

PA R E N T O R G A N I Z AT I O N S Serving with Gladness With 1,193 students from 822 households and over 250 faculty and staff members, it takes a village to accomplish all that happens at Wesleyan School in any given school year. Certainly, it requires much hard work from teachers in the classroom and staff members in their various offices on campus. Students do a lot of hard work too. But, Wesleyan would not be the community it is today were it not for the volunteer work of Wesleyan parents. Wesleyan’s three parents organizations are a few of the ways to get involved on campus: The Wesleyan Parents Club (WPC), Wesleyan Arts Alliance (WAA), and Wesleyan Wolf Trackers. These organizations of dedicated parents work tirelessly to support the school community.
W E S L E YA N PA R E N T S C L U B Psalm 100 serves as the inspiration of the Wesleyan Parents Club. The goal of WPC is to build and strengthen the Wesleyan community by fostering the connection between parents, teachers, and students. Every Wesleyan parent is automatically a member of the WPC. The Wesleyan Parents Club sponsors events that encourage involvement, promote focused fellowship, help build our community, and embrace new families. Events such as the annual Homecoming Hoedown and Grandparents and Special Friends Day enrich the lives of students and families in the Wesleyan community. Campus Christmas Decorations, Moms in Prayer, and Teacher Treats help to build relationships and allow them to bless, serve, and pray for others. WPC celebrates our teachers and staff with library donations, monthly treats, and a year-end appreciation event. To learn more about WPC and how to get involved, current Wesleyan parents can visit the Wesleyan Parents Club group in Blackbaud.

ARTS ALLIANCE The Wesleyan Arts Alliance (WAA) is a parent organization that celebrates and supports Wesleyan’s commitment to the arts. WAA strives to facilitate the expression of individuality and support students in a variety of artistic endeavors available at the school. WAA believes that art is an important part of every child’s development and of the school community. Each school year, WAA fulfills many fine arts needs by reinvesting directly into the Wesleyan fine arts programs in all three divisions. Their goal is to provide financial, physical, and spiritual support to all students in kindergarten through 12th grade as they participate in both visual and performing art activities. Each year, they raise funds through membership receipts, the Artist Market, student art sales, and advertisements; all funds are returned in their entirety to the fine arts program. WAA hosts the Wesleyan Artist Market annually each spring. The Artist Market features the work of professional artists throughout the region. While the market is a significant fundraising opportunity for the school, it is also a community-building event.
WOLF TRACKERS Wesleyan Wolf Trackers provides financial support, guidance, and leadership for Wesleyan’s athletic program. Wolf Trackers works to acknowledge the many Wesleyan teachers and community coaches who train, coach, and mentor Wesleyan’s student athletes. To show appreciation for Wesleyan’s coaches, Wolf Trackers sponsors the Worthington-Freeman Award each year, which recognizes a community coach who gives generously of his or her time and talent through coaching. Wolf Trackers is also focused on building school spirit and helping teams increase student attendance at all events. Traditionally, Wolf Trackers proudly hosts events like the Football Kick-Off Dinner, the Hit & Howl Tennis Tournament, and the Annual Coaches’ Appreciation Dinner.

HOYT FAMILY ATHLETIC COMPLEX Included in the fieldhouse are public restrooms, an athletic training room, a concession stand, and a large covered porch that gives Wesleyan the necessary space for students to use daily and for parents and guests to enjoy during school-hosted events.
The Hoyt Family Athletic Complex will benefit current and future generations of Wesleyan families by addressing the campus’s greatest athletic space needs. The addition of a centrally located fieldhouse provides necessary locker room space for varsity softball and cross country in the fall and varsity, JV, and middle school lacrosse in the spring.
Wren Stadium at Agape Field is the new home for the softball program and includes a new batting cage. The lacrosse team has a permanent stadium for the first time in school history, and both stadiums received upgraded LED lighting.
COMPLETED FALL 2020!
The Hoyt Family Athletic Complex immediately became a valuable asset for the Wesleyan athletic program when it opened in the fall of 2020. William & Angela Hoyt are the benefactors of the Hoyt Family Athletic Complex, and their son, Bo, is a Wesleyan graduate from the class of 2004.

In a year that has been dominated by challenges and disappointments, our team getting to enjoy these beautiful, state-of-the-art facilities has been a tremendous bright spot.” This project also added a synthetic turf field to give teams an all-weather surface for year-round practice. The addition of 50 much-needed parking spaces in front of the fieldhouse creates a perfect place for students to be picked up after practices and games. The softball team already enjoyed the use of Wren Stadium. “The new softball facility is remarkable and truly unmatched at the high school level. What we get to enjoy is superior to many college facilities,” says Mary Stephenson, head softball coach and high school dean of student life. “To say the girls were excited when the facility opened would be a major understatement. They were elated! In a year that has been dominated by challenges and disappointments, our team getting to enjoy these beautiful, state-of-the-art facilities has been a tremendous bright spot.” Looking to the spring, Connor Breslin, head lacrosse coach and eighth grade boys chair, is excited about what the facilities mean for the lacrosse program. “We are very grateful for our new lacrosse facilities, which are bar none the best in the state. The players are excited about a locker room that they can call home, and the updated field surfaces will allow us to improve despite the tough weather conditions we face in January and February.”

ac ting in Theater performances on campus have looked different this fall due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Everything from the selection of plays and musicals, to the size of casts, to the decision of live performance versus livestream has been on the minds of the theater team. Fortunately, both middle and high school plays were performed live this fall. Audiences were limited and socially distanced. Performances were livestreamed for the rest of the Wesleyan community to enjoy. To maintain Wesleyan’s face covering protocol based on CDC guidelines, all actors, crew, and audience members wore face coverings during rehearsals and performances. “Yes, we had our entire cast wearing face coverings,” laughed Steve Broyles, coordinator of theater programs. “The student actors were skeptical it could be done, but we did it, and I think we not only rose to the occasion, but I really believe cast members are better actors after having this experience.”

It turns out that acting in masks is not a new phenomenon. From the very origins of theater, masks have been used for various reasons that have nothing to do with a pandemic. Masks as part of actors’ on-stage costuming date back to early Greek theater, and acting in masks has a long tradition in eastern theater. “In eastern and Asian cultures, acting has typically been more body language dependent,” Broyles went on to say. “Wearing a mask that shows facial features or emotional clues helps audiences understand each character, and then dramatic body language is a way that the actor further communicates their character.” Often masks would be used to help audiences immediately understand who “stock characters” were. Understanding up front who the “bad guy” is, for example, or who would be providing comedic relief could be communicated from the start of a performance based on which mask an actor was wearing. “Wearing a mask on stage forces an actor to not rely on their facial expressions when telling a story,” said Stephanie Simmons, lower and middle school drama coordinator. “Actors must enhance their body language, the tone of their voice, and even the direction of their body and their gaze.”

ACTING IN MASKS
Wearing a mask on stage forces an actor not to rely on their facial expressions when telling a story. Actors must enhance their body language, the tone of their voice, and even the direction of their body and their gaze.”
“This is seen in many undergraduate and graduate level theater programs. Acting In A Mask is actually a course in many university theater programs,” said Simmons. “It is challenging, and it certainly can help an actor grow in their craft when you take away one of the primary things actors in western cultures rely on. By hiding their face, you sometimes get an even better performance.” While the middle and high school casts wore masks this fall for different reasons, the challenge was the same. Considering these are student actors with varying levels of experience in theater, Broyles and Simmons knew they had their work cut out for them. “In our case this fall, we were not using traditional theater masks,” explained Broyles. “We were using the type of face coverings that only cover the mouth and nose, of course, due to COVID. In some ways that makes it even more challenging. It is harder to speak and project lines, and only the student’s eyes are visible. The eyes tell the audience everything, whether the rest of your face is covered or not. When only the eyes are visible, actors must be much more aware of not just the expression in their eyes, but where they are actually looking.” When rehearsing for both the middle and high school shows, both Broyles and Simmons found they gave similar notes frequently to their casts. “We had to keep reminding them to be mindful of where they look,” recalled Simmons. “Directing teenagers has taught me that, whether they acknowledge it or even realize it, they are seeking our feedback to their acting throughout rehearsals. Many of them will be in the middle of a scene, body and face pointed in the right direction, lines recited correctly, but if I look closely, their eyes are cutting to the side to see if they can see my reaction as the director!”

ACTING IN MASKS
WINTER AND SPRING T H E AT E R P E R F O R M A N C E S “This is not a new thing that has come up due to the face coverings,” explained Simmons. “But the face coverings taking up three-fourths of their faces and leaving only their eyes to be seen has made this much more obvious. So, we’ve worked hard with the cast to help them stay in character, stay in the moment, and focus on the other actors on the stage…and not the reactions of the audience!” Acting in masks also requires students to be very diligent about voice projection and diction. Students worked hard during rehearsals to make sure they spoke slowly and clearly so that the audience understood their lines. “We also talked a good bit about how to show the audience and not just tell the audience,” said Broyles. “Those are two very different ways to express a character for an actor. Understanding how to tap into both can elevate a performance.” While many are looking forward to the day when we can be on campus without face coverings, there are some silver linings to the protocols currently in place. Enhancing our student actors’ experience and theater training, it turns out, may be one of them.

A L U M N I S P O T L I G H T: MADDIE LOPE Z MORDEN ‘09 Mother-daughter team M A D D I E L O P E Z M O R D E N ’ 0 9 and Tammy Lopez are the creative forces behind Personify, a popular store in downtown Duluth. The store is the latest iteration of Maddie and Tammy’s ventures in business…and family. The duo has always loved “treasure hunting” together. That passion first turned into a shop known for eclectic and memorable finds, mostly in furniture and home furnishings, at Lake Rabun. The pair opened Personify in downtown Duluth when that area was just beginning its revitalization in 2017. Personify’s flagship store is in the heart of downtown Duluth on West Lawrenceville Street. Filled with unique treasures, the shop is a one-stop spot for women’s clothing, jewelry, baby gifts, stationery, accessories, and home furnishings.

Some of those relationships still mean a lot to me, and I enjoy keeping up with many of them. I was also VERY prepared for college and still appreciate how I was challenged academically during my time there.

I had recently gotten married and had been working in Atlanta in another field and just wasn’t fulfilled. My mom and I had dreamed for years of having our own shop. The opportunity presented itself in 2014, and we jumped right in. We took a huge leap of faith and opened a storefront in downtown Lakemont, in the North Georgia mountains. We commuted back and forth for three years and really put so much love into that little seasonal shop. We opened the Duluth store in March 2017, and things have just continued to take off from there. We both live here in Duluth and love the community we have here. One positive side effect of all the craziness of 2020 is we have seen our online store take off. We ship a lot of items each week all across the country and even sometimes internationally, which is super fun. Our joy though, will always be our storefront.

We put a lot of effort into this business, and it is important to be able to trust the other person. Like everything, the shop has had ups and downs, but we are family, so we can make it through it all together. We also have an amazing staff, and they add another fun aspect to the business.

We want to add joy and whimsy and playfulness and fun to your everyday life. We hope a visit to Personify is a bright spot in your day. I say this all the time: I have truly met my people through this venture with the store. Some of my best friends started as just customers in the store. We have had the shop in Duluth for almost four years now, and everywhere I go there are shop people. I love it! Not to mention our fabulous downtown Duluth business neighbors. It is an amazing community. We love our spot and our neighbors. It’s absolutely where we were meant to be.

A L U M N I S P O T L I G H T: CHIP BROUN ‘04
On November 11, 2020, Wesleyan welcomed back C H I P B R O U N ‘ 0 4 for a virtual Veteran’s Day Assembly. Broun is a graduate of the Naval Academy and current Commanding Officer for Recruiting Station Chicago in the United States Marine Corps. Previously, he was with the 3rd Battalion, 5th Marines in Camp Pendleton, California.
For the assembly, Broun spoke on the history of Veteran’s Day, its importance, and what it means to him. We also had a chance to catch up with Chip afterwards to ask him a few questions about his time at Wesleyan and his service to our country.
W H AT W E R E Y O U I N V O LV E D I N W H I L E Y O U W E R E AT W E S L E YA N ? I played football and soccer, was a member of the swim team, and I was a peer leader.

I remember that there were a few teachers along the way that helped me learn and keep me in line. Brad Mauldin, Heidi Lloyd, Ted Russell, Kendra Morris, and Andrea Shupert are just a few of the teachers who helped me mature and learn throughout my high school years and beyond.

W H AT T E A C H E R O R C O A C H H A D A P R O F O U N D I M PA C T O N Y O U ? I remember learning and growing from a character standpoint from athletics. I can vividly remember Mr. Khedouri saying “Find a Way,” and all of the football coaches emphasizing the importance of personal accountability. I would not say I was the best soccer player, but I also learned a lot from Billy Coxhead about not quitting something because it was difficult. Wesleyan was really a holistic experience, and I had a lot of really good people that were able to provide me with a solid foundation. I don’t think I fully appreciated it until later in life, but I am very thankful for the experience I had at Wesleyan.

S H A R E A L I T T L E B I T A B O U T Y O U R S T O RY A N D H O W Y O U E N D E D U P I N T H E M I L I TA RY ? I remember sitting in Wesleyan chapel my sophomore year when 9/11 happened and listening to Brian Kennerly, the high school principal at the time, tell everyone what had happened. From that moment, it was a mix of patriotism and youthful bravado that led me to apply for the Naval Academy. Additionally, my dad was in the Navy, and my grandfather fought in World War II. It felt like it was my calling to serve the country.

W H AT H A S Y O U R E X P E R I E N C E B E E N L I K E S I N C E Y O U H AV E B E E N E N L I S T E D ? Since I commissioned, it has been like I am still on a sports team. There is a level of comradery and family that I think is unique from any other job. We all have a common goal, and I still love what I do every day. When I first graduated from the Academy, my job was to get my platoon (about 50 marines) ready to go for combat. After my first tour in Afghanistan, I went to Quantico to become a teacher and trainer for future infantry officers. My goal was to make them ready to lead platoons in combat like I did, but my personal goal was making them better than I was. It was fun to experience that and be a person of accountability for men and women.
W H AT D O E S Y O U R D AY T O D AY L O O K L I K E RIGHT NOW? I usually get up around 5:30 a.m., workout until 7:30, and I’m in uniform by 8. Then I start driving around the city of Chicago and check on Marines. My primary goal is to keep people motivated and actively looking for the best young men and women to become Marines. The nice part right now is that I still usually make it home for dinner.
W H AT H A S B E E N T H E M O S T R E W A R D I N G PA R T O F Y O U R C A R E E R ? Personally, the most rewarding part of my life has been meeting my wife, Joslynn, and being a father to my two kids Audrey (5) and Walker (3). Professionally, it is not one moment, but it’s all of those moments when you see someone figure something out for the first time. Whether I’m training someone in tactics or techniques, or in the physically demanding parts of the job, it’s really cool to see someone grow and have that “lightbulb” moment.
ANYTHING ELSE YOU’D LIKE TO ADD? Once COVID-19 has subsided a little more, I plan on making a trip back to Atlanta and bringing the kids by the school. I hear it is very different from when I left, but I am more excited to say hello to some old friends that are still there!

ANNUAL REPORT
CAPITAL CAMPAIGN Wesleyan School has been blessed by the incredible generosity, from the earliest days of our founding, with more than $150 million being raised to fund five capital campaigns since 1996. These campaigns built our campus and created an endowment that will have an eternal impact on students, faculty, parents, and friends of Wesleyan. We are currently in the early stages of The Campaign for Students, and our desire is to enhance endowment for financial and building maintenance, and to build new athletic and academic facilities to meet the needs of all students on campus. Wesleyan remains debt free, and the endowment currently stands at $24.1 million, as of June 30, 2020. The following benefactors have made early capital and endowment commitments to the Campaign for Students, and while we are currently in the foundational gifts phase, total campaign gifts and pledges have exceeded $24 million. We are exceedingly grateful to these donors who are continuing a powerful tradition of philanthropy at Wesleyan School.

ANNUAL REPORT
THE WESLEYAN FUND The Wesleyan Fund is the foundation of all fundraising efforts at Wesleyan, and each year we ask every family to participate. Wesleyan is a community with a history and a heart for philanthropy, and for 19 of the past 20 years, we have met or exceeded 95% parent participation in the Wesleyan Fund. Supporting the Wesleyan Fund allows us to hire and retain the best and brightest teachers, fund need-based financial aid, and remain need-blind in the admissions process. When we find an excellent teacher who also wants to coach a sport, lead in the arts, host a Bible Study, and give up their spring break to go on a mission trip with our students, we want that person to sign our contract every year and make a career at Wesleyan. Being need-blind in the admissions process allows us to accept students based upon their academic merit, not their parent’s ability to pay. The student experience is enhanced when talented young people, regardless of family income, are a part of our community. It is truly humbling to think about the generosity of the pioneering families of Wesleyan School from the earliest years of our founding in Peachtree Corners. They were so committed to the mission of Wesleyan that they sent their children to school in trailers and ultimately built and paid for what we enjoy today. To honor their legacy and follow the call of Christ, we must continue to push ahead for current and future generations of Wesleyan students.

GEORGIA GOAL GEORGIA TAX CREDIT SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM Financial aid has become increasingly important to Wesleyan. Since 2008, the state of Georgia has allowed for the redirection of state income tax liability to a qualified student scholarship program, for the purpose of need-based financial aid. Wesleyan participates with the qualified student scholarship program known as Georgia GOAL. Through the GOAL program, Wesleyan has provided aid to students whom we might otherwise not have been able to serve, thus furthering Wesleyan’s ability to fulfill its Christian mission. We would like to thank Wesleyan parents, grandparents, faculty, and friends for their participation and support. The Georgia GOAL program participants are listed for the 2020 tax year through September 30, 2020. OPPORTUNITIES TO LEAVE A LEGACY The Endowment Fund For Wesleyan to remain a top-tier institution, the endowment must continue to be a priority to ensure that future generations of students, faculty, and parents have the opportunity to take part in the life-changing experience that Wesleyan offers. Endowments are a pool of funds that continue in perpetuity, with a designated portion of the annual return (currently 4%) providing a stream of income to support financial aid, faculty salaries, and building maintenance. As of June 30, 2020, Wesleyan’s endowment stands at $24.1 million. There are three major components of the Endowment Fund:
Financial Aid
Endowment funds for Financial Aid allow Wesleyan to help current Wesleyan families in need. In addition, financial aid also provides educational opportunities for students with diverse talents, backgrounds, and interests who will enhance Wesleyan’s student body.
Faculty Salaries
Wesleyan’s commitment is to hire only faculty members who exhibit a personal Christian faith. Every faculty member is expected to lead, teach, and mentor our students by example in the way they conduct their own lives. Endowment for faculty salaries enables the school to attract and retain Christian faculty of the highest caliber.
Capital Endowment
New buildings have been built, but as they age, they will always require new roofs, new chillers, and major IT improvements. This endowment allows us to enhance these structures.
Bequests Including Wesleyan School as a beneficiary in one’s will provides a meaningful future gift to the school, as well as savings in estate taxes. Life Insurance Policies A life insurance policy naming Wesleyan School as owner and beneficiary may provide a substantial future gift to the school. The value of the policy, as well as the annual premium payments, may be tax-deductible and will be treated as annual gifts to the school. Charitable Trusts Charitable remainder trusts may provide lifetime income, immediate tax savings, and avoidance of capital gains tax while establishing a major gift for Wesleyan as the trust’s ultimate beneficiary.

Wesleyan Fund Gifts
GIVING TO WESLEYAN
Since tuition does not cover the full cost of a Wesleyan education, tax-deductible gifts to the Annual Fund fulfill a number of needs. These unrestricted contributions supplement the school’s operating budget and provide dollars needed for faculty salaries and financial aid. The entire Wesleyan community is asked to give to the Annual Fund. The Annual Fund begins July 1 and ends June 30, coinciding with our fiscal year.
Restricted and Memorial Gifts
These gifts are designated for specific requests for program and extracurricular activities.
Capital Campaign
The financial support of this school is dependent upon the support of every family. Capital campaigns exist to fund new buildings, purchase additional land, and create the endowment for the school.
