Drivers on the Wessex Way have been getting a gentle reminder about Westbourne thanks to a new sign. The large sign promoting shopping in Westbourne is located on a wall in the Milburn Road car park. The new sign is a change from the traditional design of the “Welcome to Westbourne” signs, seen as you enter Westbourne from either end of Poole Road. The promotional sign was arranged by the Westbourne Traders Association and the Bournemouth Chamber of Trade and Commerce. Do you like the new sign? Add your comments on our website.

options from Cook

We spoke to Elaine Sullman from Cook in Westbourne about the new Guilt Free range, exclusively available at Cook. “Our virtually guilt free meals all contain 20% or less of the guideline daily amounts of both calories and fat”, explained Elaine. New dishes for 2012 include a fragrant thai-style broth called Tilapia Tom Yum, made with tilapia fillets, shredded vegetables and Nanjing black rice. There is also a vegetarian butternut squash with beetroot and feta that comes with brocolli and an agava and balsamic dressing, just £3.99 for 1 serving. Cook opened in Westbourne in September 2011 and has fast become a popular addition to the area. If you haven’t been in before, pop in to 120 Poole Road and have a look around. Cook make remarkable food for your freezer, prepared by hand using the same ingredients you would use at home. All the food is blast frozen at -35C so all the nutrients and flavours are locked in so it tastes freshly made when it’s removed from the oven or microwave. All dishes can be cooked from frozen. Elaine and her staff, including son Lawrence, can also help with anything from canapés and one-pot meals to dinner parties. There is also a range of dinner party food for stress-free entertaining. Going for Gold Cook food won Great Taste Gold awards in 2011 - the Oscars of the food industry! Ask in store for details of winning dishes.

Some of our older readers will know that popular local greengrocer Fruits of the Forest has served the public for many years. In fact it’s history goes back over 40 years when there were three greengrocers in Westbourne. Over time, due to economic change and a change in shoppers habits, Fruits of the Forest became the last remaining greengrocer in Westbourne. We spoke to Daniel and his wife, Pin, about their time at Fruits of the Forest, “I took over the business seven years ago and ever since the first day, we have had great support and love from the locals. We always strive for great customer service and to supply the best local produce around.” He continues, “We’ve watched our young family grow and it has been a privilege to be part of the Westbourne community; it’s a great place to live, work and eat out! We wanted to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of you from the bottom of our hearts for being so loyal and supportive of Fruits of the Forest.” Due to the needs of raising a young family the business is now up for sale. Daniel and Pin are looking for someone who is not afraid of hard work, has the same belief in local traders and is passionate enough to want to save something true to everybody’s heart. If you are interested in running an important part of Westbourne’s high street, pop in and have a chat about this worthwhile business with lots of potential. In the meantime it’s business as usual and everyone is encouraged to start 2012 the healthy way with good quality fruit and veg. Fruit of the Forest is continuing it’s boxed veg service, just call 01202 761646 to order and collect at your convenience!

Mobile Musical Exercise to keep fit in 2012

'Melodies in Motion' sessions are totally energising. They stimulate the mind, exercise the body and lift the spirit. Sue Robathan RGN has been running interactive music sessions for people in care homes, and other different community settings, for the past five years. Those attending have come from different backgrounds and with varying capabilities; all have benefited and enjoyed the fun packed sessions. Following a year’s training with ‘Younger 4 Longer’ Sue was awarded a Diploma in Teaching Evidence Based Exercise in July 2011. The course is accredited by the Royal College of Nursing. From Tuesday 3rd January 2012, Sue will be offering weekly exercise classes at St Michael’s Church Hall in Poole Road. Each session lasts an hour. At 10am the mobile exercise to music session targets the more mature who are able and like to be more active. This is followed by the 11.15am chair-based session catering for the more mature and those unused to exercise. Pre-recorded music, hand and leg weights, resistance bands and other props are brought to each session and the programme is adapted and varied to suit those attending. The emphasis is on fun and enjoyment with a therapeutic basis. Each session lifts the mood of those present and exercises the body with ensuing health benefits leading to improved self-esteem and improved quality of life. 'Melodies in Motion' sessions stimulate the mind, exercise the body and lift the spirit. Sign up for the classes, make new friends and make a difference in your life. Costs are £4.00 for the first class and subsequently £5.00 per session. Prepaid block bookings of 10 sessions receive a 10% discount. If you would like to discuss other possibilities, e.g. musical fun parties for special birthdays or starting up a regular exercise session elsewhere, please do not hesitate to get in touch with Sue on 01202 282315.

Welcome to the January Book Review and a big Happy New Year to everyone. I hope you all had a fun-filled festive season and are now ready for 2012. We would all like to say a huge thank you for the cards and kind gifts of chocs and biscuits that you brought in to us at Christmas. So generous and thoughtful of you, and keeps us going when we’re too busy to stop for lunch! This month I thought I’d recommend some paperbacks to curl up with on a cold winter’s night and some suggestions for books that you may not have received at Christmas, but may wish to purchase with your Book Tokens. Below are some ‘New Year, New You’ suggestions, just in case you’ve overindulged over the festive season. Secrets of Staying Young - Rosemary Conley £12.99 In her new book she shares some of her own experiences of looking and feeling young, as well as giving advice on diet, exercise, dressing for your age and shape, and medical advice about HRT, plastic surgery and how to stay fit despite the changes in your body. 18 Minutes: Find Your Focus, Master Distraction and Get the Right Things Done £9.99 18 Minutes shows how to create productive distractions, a practice that can be easily implemented in 18 minutes a day. The result is a simple yet comprehensive approach to managing your life a year, a day, and a moment at a time so that your life moves forward the way you want and at the pace you want.

Joanna Trollope – Daughters-in-Law £7.99 Rachel has always loved being at the centre of her large family, but when her youngest gets married, Rachel finds that control is slipping away. A power struggle develops which can only end in unhappiness; her three daughtersin-law want to do things their own way, and so, to her grief, do her sons... Michael Dobbs – Lord’s Day £7.99 The State Opening of Parliament and the most magnificent Royal occasion of the year. The Queen, her Cabinet and all the most powerful people in the land are gathering in one room, the House of Lords, but none of them know they are about to endure the most terrifying day of their lives... Camilla Lackberg – Stranger £7.99 For fans of Stieg Larsson and Jo Nesbo: a woman is found dead, apparently the victim of a tragic car crash. It's the first in a spate of seemingly inexplicable accidents in Tanumshede and marks the end of a quiet winter for detective Patrik Hedstrom and his colleagues. Peter May – The Blackhouse £7.99 A brutal killing takes place on the Isle of Lewis, Scotland: a land of harsh beauty and inhabitants of deep-rooted faith. Murder Detective Inspector Macleod is sent from Edinburgh to investigate. The case represents a journey and a secret. Something sinister lurks within the close-knit island community. Claire Tomalin – Charles Dickens: A Life £25 RRP£30 Claire Tomalin, author of ‘Whitbread Book of the Year: Samuel Pepys’, paints an unforgettable portrait of Dickens, capturing the complex character of this great genius. Brian Cox – Quantum £20 Just what is quantum physics? How does it help us understand the world? Where does it leave Newton and Einstein? How can we be sure that the theory is good? Brian Cox and Jeff Forshaw give us the real science, and reveal the profound theories that allow for concrete, yet astonishing, predictions about the world.

Business Help is at Hand expert advice

We spoke to Mandy Fitzmaurice from the Change Partner Consultancy. She has over 20 years’ experience in human resources consultancy, change management and general management across a broad range of service industries. “I saw how difficult it was for smaller businesses to be able to access high-quality human resource services, support and advice and so created Change Partner Consultancy to enable more companies to be able to access this kind of support through a range of flexible HR solutions that won’t break the bank”, explained Mandy. Mandy now works with business leaders and their teams to help them navigate and manage their way through the minefield of employment legislation and change that comes with running any kind of business in today’s world. We asked Mandy about business in our area, “Westbourne plays host to a unique range of shops that make it a destination point for many people in and around the surrounding areas and is also a hidden store of many other high profile professional and service businesses, who have a great opportunity to work much more closely together and reap the rewards that will come as a result.” Mandy shops local, “As a regular visitor to Westbourne, I can never walk past Courtenays Fine Art Gallery without popping in to see Rozanne Bell’s latest work and who could resist the delights of Chocol8??! I would also highly recommend Walkers Solicitors who offer high quality advice and provide excellent value for money.”

Bournemouth Beaches Collapse! Yes you read correctly! The staff of Bournemouth Beaches are ready to collapse after an extremely busy year. “We cannot believe that in just 12 months we have done so much. A big thank you to all of our landlords from 2011 and a warm welcome to our new owners joining us for the 2012 season – we really look forward to working with you and providing the great service that only Bournemouth Beaches can offer”, explained Natalie. She continued, “We are pleased to continue our association with JUST who provide us with in house maintenance support, out of hours service and now their newly formed JUST FLY who will provide all of our guest airport transfers for 2012. Add this to our in house laundry and linen hire service, online booking, extended hours to include Sunday opening, online concierge and flexible landlord options and you will see that we really go the extra mile. It is easier to say that no other agent in this area provides the same level of service as Bournemouth Beaches. Something you may not know is that we also provide a professional residential lettings service – please call us if you would like to discuss some options. If you are not happy with your current agent or have tenant issues then we can help.” On support for the the Southbourne Creative Hub, “Our interest in The Hub at Southbourne has proved very successful and looks to be a template for other similar organisations to work in community based projects.” Natalie finally said, “Every year we improve and enhance our service to help our landlords and guests alike. This year we have employed an additional full time staff member, Hayley Chalmers, who along with working on our sales desk will take responsibility for our Social Media and PR department. We have also expanded all of our in house services and increased our property portfolio. “

New Year, New Home? Property

Philip & Kieran would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year from Southcoast Property. “After celebrating our first Christmas and New Year we were not surprised to see the drop in activity during December and even to a certain extent November. However, on a more positive note our vast database of quality applicants who decided not to pursue a move in the later months of 2011 are now actively searching for a new home”, explained Kieran. “As a new agent we were not amazed, since our opening in April last year, at the amount of people looking for property in and around the Westbourne area. However, the shortage of available rental property was all too obvious. There were a number of occasions where as many as 10 – 20 applicants desperately tried to book viewings on the same property.” On one occasion explained Kieran, “I arrived at the office at 8.35am on a Monday morning after putting a property onto the internet the previous Saturday (pictured) to find a lady waiting with £300 in cash to reserve the property without even seeing it!” The delighted customer did later explain that the 22 internal images gave her such a clear image that she did not need to see it! She and her partner and their little boy have been there nearly four months now and are extremely happy. Philip looked 2012, “We see 2012 as a year of opportunity for anyone in the position to invest in residential property. With interest rates at an historic low and property prices almost 12% down on average across the country from four years ago now really is the time to invest, all be it wisely and with a little experienced guidance.” For free property advice or a no obligation market appraisal please contact Southcoast Property on 01202 768885 or email on enquiries@southcoastpropertyltd.com Philip and Kieran’s final message was “Why not get the New Year off to a flying start and call us to see what we can offer!”
