Welcome to the June book review. Summer seems to be with us at last and we all have the World Cup to look forward to! In one window we have a selection of some of the best picks of football reading to while away all that annoying time between matches. Whilst for those of us who aren’t big fans of sitting indoors when the sun is shining, our other window has lots of ideas for holidays, with a particular focus on the “staycation”. • • • • • •

We have a selection of cards, including favourite designs by Quentin Blake and many gift ideas. There are four suggestions opposite. The end of June is also my third anniversary in the shop so there will be the usual glass of wine or juice and nibbles to say a big thank you to all my loyal customers. Please come and join us on Saturday 26th June. Drinks will be available all day – but no wine for the staff until at least lunchtime!

S A new book from the £3 hugely popular Cloudspotter’s Guide. One February day Gavin Pretor-Pinney took a break from cloudspotting and started watching the waves rolling into shore. Mesmerised, he wondered where they had come from, and decided to find out. He soon realised that waves don't just appear on the ocean, they are everywhere around us, and our lives depend on them. A great idea to keep Dads busy on the beach.

Local Reaction to Westbourne

In last months edition we brought you news of Tesco Express coming to Westbourne. The new store is due to open in July taking the ground floor of the Old Methodist Church. We asked for your comments, here is a representative cross section of opinions posted to our website. “There is a bigger 24 hour Tesco just 5 minutes down the road, why do we need another one?” Sarah

“If it was a Waitrose opening instead would people be so against it?” Peter

“The fact that national chains like Tesco, M&S, Starbucks, Pizza Express etc are opening in Westbourne is good news for the independent retailers as these big names bring shoppers into the area. Many of the shop units in Westbourne are small so not of interest to the chains but perfectly suited to independent speciality shops.” Russell

“Westbourne has long needed a store selling essentials to be open until late. Tesco Express will serve this need.” Michael

“I am really disappointed that something so unimaginative has been done with a building with such interesting architecture. It would have been wonderful as an arts centre, a cinema showing alternative films or even a theatre.” Jane

“The problem is not that a SUPERMARKET is going into the building, the objection most of us residents have, is that it is Tesco. Tesco are hell-bent on World domination and are well on the way to acheiving it.” Louise “Now that this is happening all you can do (and it's arguably the most powerful thing you can do) is NOT shop there. As a long standing and passionate resident of the area I will continue to satisfy my shopping needs from the wealth of indies in the town.” SeasideAndy

Guilty Verdict

in Ralph Millward killing

Three teenagers from Poole have been found guilty of manslaughter after kicking to death Ralph Millward. Ralph, who had been sleeping rough outside Marks and Spencer in Westbourne was attacked by Jimmy Ayres, 15, Craig Real, 17, and Warren Crago, 17, on 8 May 2009. Ralph was well known in the local neighbourhood, he was discovered lying dead in bushes. He had died from multiple blunt force injuries and a was found with a supermarket trolley on top of him. The judge lifted reporting restrictions on naming the three teenagers, calling the crime "frankly appalling". Sentencing will take place at Winchester Crown Court on 30 June. Local resident Tara Buchanan has written a poem remembering Ralph called Book Worm. Sorry, we didn't hear. We were too warm to notice. Your hair covered their assault and the spleen doesn't clot, just quietly trickles away. Everybody's and nobody's friend, our book worm. I emptied my purse into your palm one Christmas. It felt good and paid for tobacco.

Perhaps reform will polish up, repackage them? In twenty they may feel it. One day you're married, kids, a job; slide the door, you're sleeping in bushes, next in line for a kicking.

New Puzzles

something a little tougher to challenge you

We heard our puzzles were getting too easy so here are a few to really make your head hurt! Put numbers 1 to 9 in the boxes on the right. Each straight line of 3 boxes must add up to 14. This includes the diagonal lines.

Arrange the 6 L-shaped pieces in the rectangle so that all dots are touching (i.e. adjacent to another dot). HINT: The dots circled in green are touching, the dot in the red circle is on it’s own. This is really difficult but completely possible! The 12 matches shown make one large square and four triangles. Arrange the matches so that they make three squares and eight triangles.
