Tesco Church Development Wins Award The redeveloped church complex in Westbourne has won an award at Dorset’s very first Property & Architecture Award. The Graemar Group won the award for ‘Best New Commercial or Mixed Use Development’ with the Westbourne Methodist Church. The site includes a Tesco Express and soon to open Kobe Joe’s Restaurant (more on this next month). Over 300 business people made up the guest list at the awards ceremony with representatives from the property sector, including architects, surveyors, estate agents and construction companies. Money was also raised for the Wessex Cancer Trust who offered guests the chance to bid on one of four opportunities to fly with ‘Blades’ aerobatic display team. Westbourne: centre of elegance, style and new bus shelter seats! Westbourne is very well connected in many ways and the number and variety of buses is a prime example. Running through Westbourne are 18s, 20s, 24s, 1Bs, 1Cs, M1s and M2s - all taking us where we want to go. Most of the bus stops are well equipped with shelters, seats and digital displays giving the passenger comfort and reliability. However, for some reason the Bingo Hall and Iceland shelters did not have seats and, for some passengers, this has meant an awkward, and sometimes painful, wait. A request was made to Bournemouth Borough Council to seek funding and by the end of January we had received two new seats at each stop. I would like to thank Bournemouth Borough Council for their prompt work on this matter. Article from local resident Mrs Lawman

Welcome Kobe Jo’s and Relax
We met up with James Bronson, local entrepreneur and owner of Kobe Jo’s, an exciting new restaurant concept to be located above Tesco Express in Westbourne. Looking over the plans for the building we asked James what Kobe Jo’s is all about, “we’re creating an innovative Japanese influenced restaurant & wine bar offering Sushi, Asian Tapas and a Steak Grill with a range of wines, beers, spirits and soft drinks with a far eastern influence such as sake wine and Japanese lagers.” Once work has been completed and Kobe Jo’s is officially opened in April, James has plans to offer Sushi workshops, tasting sessions, a regular Westbourne Wine Club event and jazz music on Sunday evenings. The development will bring employment to 30 staff including a team of chefs and waiting staff. “Our team is working hard to finish the initial building work and we’re all excited to see the finished result! With such beautiful surroundings, we’re maintaining the original structure and features of the building with access from Poole Road via a lift and staircase.” The well stocked bar will include a range of beverages with a relaxing waiting area for the restaurant. James is looking forward to welcoming local residents to Kobe Joe’s. “We want everyone who comes to Kobe Joes to eat, drink and relax either in the restaurant or in the outside seating area. We will be open from 11am until midnight (subject to terms & conditions) and able to seat up to 90 covers.” Kobe Jo’s will be an exciting new addition to Westbourne’s unique identity, look out for more information about the opening in next month’s edition of the Westbourne Magazine.

Only The Finest & Bumble
Westbourne’s Badger & Bumble is rapidly becoming one of the South's premier food destinations. Offering a substantial range of cheeses, wines, charcuterie plus a coffee shop to sit down & relax over a tea or real Italian coffee. We spoke to Nick Baines, a local food writer and manager of the delicatessen, about the range of culinary delights available in store, “We try to source everything directly from the producer and can order in certain products if required. I think the main selling point is the story behind the produce. Meeting with the suppliers we can see how it’s made and find out what gives a particular cheese that distinctive taste. This benefits our customers as we can offer advice on the best wines to compliment a dish, or how to best enjoy our varied range of cold cuts, including award winning Purbeck Larder air-dried ham.” Nick explained about a new service for 2011, “We now sell fresh fish on Fridays and Saturdays from sustainable fisheries. We are supporting ‘Fisherman's Mission’ and hope to become the areas primary stop for fresh seafood.” The highly skilled team at Badger & Bumble include Nick, Vicki and Michelle who are always happy to offer advice. Events in the pipeline include tasting evenings, cocktail master classes and cupcake sessions. The café has become a meeting place for the area's foodies and with a growing selection of cook books, inspiration is always close at hand. Badger & Bumble offers a friendly, family run atmosphere and you can’t help escape the amazing aromas from the various cheeses available in store. Be adventurous this March and excite your taste buds!

Save our high streets! scheme for Bournemouth
We all know that times are hard for small businesses and it’s frustrating as a resident to see our favourite stores close down. However, there may be a solution to benefit Westbourne’s unique selection of shops and others across Bournemouth. Printanoffer.com Bournemouth is a new voucher offer website run by Alex and Julie promoting local businesses. Printanoffer.com Bournemouth aims to support local traders and stimulate the local economy. By providing a series of discount vouchers which you can access via the website, you print out the vouchers out and redeem them at local stores. Businesses will be levied a small charge for this service but the website is offering the first month free as a taster. If successful, the same tactic could be adopted by local traders right across the country. We spoke to Alex Hogben, the website’s spokesperson, “We were perplexed by how busy the retail complexes and large supermarkets are, yet our local shops are next to empty. Many large chains and restaurants advertise on big branded voucher websites and more and more people turn to these websites before making important spending decisions. We could see that this could be a viable option for local traders as well. We have found that people can be suspicious if you offer them something free but the reasoning behind the free month is to let the client have a’ try before you buy’ and to see the benefits first hand. This also gives a business on a small budget the chance at free advertising in the hope that the voucher scheme will increase sales.” The site will also be promoting local charities free of charge. The first local charity to take advantage of the scheme is Leaf – Leukaemia Educating and Fundraising (www.leafcharity.com), run by Natasha Jones and Sara Haymes. They are offering a £2 discount on tickets to their annual ‘Passion for Fashion’ fundraiser to be held on March 17th at the Esporta Health Club, Poole. For further information contact Alex Hogben on 01202 798008 or email Bournemouth@printanoffer.com
