Tesco Express Update The new Tesco Express is due to open at the end of the month. As we went to press, the major building work was finished with the new front door in place and a ramp to the original door installed. The store will be open from 6am until 11pm, 7 days a week and will offer general groceries, newspapers & magazines, beers, wines and spirits and there will be an in store bakery. To find out the impact such a store can have, we spoke to shop owners in Southbourne where a Tesco Express opened in their high street. Perhaps suprisingly the reaction was generally positive. After initial concerns, the local traders saw an increase in footfall to the area, from people coming to the Tesco, and even other food stores reported an increase in trade. What effect Tesco will have on Westbourne remains to be seen, but we believe the net result will be positive. What do you think? Post your views and read others on our website: www.westbourne.info World’s Largest Coffee Morning Everyone is invited to take part in the World’s Largest Coffee Morning at Bee a Bug this October. The event in association with MacMillan Cancer Support Charity is being held on Wednesday 6th October at Bee a Bug Play Cafe. Come along from 10am until 12am and support this excellent charity by buying a tea/coffee and yummy cake! Find out more at www.beeabug.co.uk

Westbourne to get New Christmas Lights The rather lackluster Christmas lights of Westbourne are getting a much needed makeover this year. The number of bulbs broken in the lights that criss-cross the main roads of Westbourne has been increasing every year, but that’s all going to be fixed for 2010. The new lights are going to be the same vibrant colours used on the Westbourne traders map and directory. Tesco, the Westbourne Traders Association and Bournemouth Council are all helping fund the work.

Welcome to the October Book Review. We have two new employees to introduce to you this month. The first is my long-time friend Sarah who will be here for 3 days during the week. Tony Hardman
legend and local resident
A chat with Tony Hardman is never dull. He’s had a long and varied history in the entertainment industry, from acting in Eastenders and The Bill to theatre productions and public relations work for some A list stars. He is currently working on a book detailing his years in the business, “A Hardman Is Good To Find” is the working title! We asked Tony about his time in Westbourne, “I’ve been in the area since 1978. It’s a great place to live. There are fabulous shops and it’s my comfort zone. There are also some great cafes I like to frequent.” explains Tony. We asked how Westbourne has changed over the years, “The car parking is better now but there are less independent shops in the area, there is a risk we’ll loose the unique character. There used to be more shops in Westbourne that associated it as a seaside town”. We went on to ask if he had any funny or memorable stories from his time in Westbourne, “I remember being out with Norman Wisdom, he was running down R.L. Stevenson Ave doing his funny walks as his trousers came down! I worked with Dora Bryan over many years and she was one of many celebrities I took to Chez Fred, she held Westbourne in great affection.” Next time you are in Chez Fred looking at the celebrity photos, there won’t be many on the wall that Tony didn’t introduce to the area.

This is just a small selection of celebrities Tony has worked with over the years, including Sir Cliff above. Tony’s volunteer work has even been recognised by the Queen. He attended the Queen’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace to honour his work, including for Independent Age. Independent Age is a unique charity, providing lifelong support to older people on very low incomes. They provide information and advice, practical help and emergency financial aid through a network of staff and dedicated volunteers across the UK and the Republic of Ireland. “I’ve enjoyed it and met many interesting people” says Tony.

The Last Word
from resident David Critchlow
There seem to be a very large number of us oldies, or should I say pensioners, living within the area around Westbourne. We have been able to use a great variety of shops, almost all individually owned and run. There have always been plenty of coffee shops and other meeting places which have built up the social importance of Westbourne. This has made it the centre of the world for most of us. Two of the staples have been the Nationwide Building Society and the Post Office. Without warning the dozen or so regular bus travellers from the Surrey Road area found the Shamrock no 42 was cut off and the substitute no longer went to Westbourne. This was a shock to us all. Protests were dismissed and it was obvious that the decision had been taken long before anyone had been told. The doctors surgery and several dentists, opticians, osteopaths, chiropodists etc are suddenly almost inaccessible, particularly if you are ailing or find it difficult to walk. On top of this the thought of the winter and trying to carry your shopping home with all the problems of crossing roads to take another bus back has caused considerable consternation. Now the Westbourne Nationwide is being closed. The fact that many of its regular customers are elderly and who are fearful of using any holes-in-the-wall for drawing cash has been ignored. The choice is now a bus ride to Gervis Place and a long walk up the hill to Old Christchurch Road or a bus ride along the Poole Road and quite a way up the Ashley Road. Not much fun in the winter and what a pain when all you want is some cash to get your shopping. Next to go may be the Post Office. If it does close presumably we will be asked to travel the W H Smith’s on the Square. Another facility that will be seriously missed.
