Parking Ban on Poole Road To allow essential maintenance work to be carried to gas pipes, Poole Road in Westbourne is going to be under some heavy construction in the coming weeks. The main change is there will be a parking ban on Before the diggers! BOTH SIDES OF Poole Road between its junctions with Prince of Wales Road and Landseer Road, from 23rd August to 15th November. There will be a temporary taxi rank bewteen 104 and 110 Poole Road. Southern Gas Networks will be carrying out the work. The pay and display car parks are unaffected and all shops will be open for business as usual. Westbourne Nationwide Branch to Close Despite calls from many local customers, Nationwide has announced it will close it’s Westbourne branch on 29th October 2010. After the merger of the Nationwide and Portman three years ago, the Westbourne branch of the Portman was closed and turned into Pizza Express. The next nearest Nationwide branch is almost 2 miles away in Bournemouth. Nationwide had a 46 per cent fall in profits earlier this year and said the decision to close Westbourne was only taken after “careful consideration” of customers’ needs. Many of the local customers are older people who preferred a local branch, and do not bank online. What do you think about the closure? Add your feedback on our website: www.westbourne.info

Healthy Lifestyle Stewart
Welcome to my first contribution to the Westbourne magazine, my name is Angie Stewart and I have been working as the Home Manager at Canford Chase for 5 years. I am a trained nurse with a degree in nutrition, and I have a special interest in eating well to live well, something that is also important for all the residents living at Canford Chase. We are currently enjoying the tail end of the season for berry fruits - such as strawberries, raspberries and blueberries. These wonderful fruits are not only very tasty and versatile, but have also been found to be very good for supporting good health. These berries are excellent for boosting the immune system especially useful with the change from summer to autumn. They supply a steady release of sugar in the body, and are a useful snack to aid managing energy levels. They help to keep blood capillaries healthy because of the nutrients they contain, and are a useful source of fibre. These berries can make a quick and easy snack on their own, or with a dollop of yoghurt. Our chef at Canford Chase – Peter Watson - has devised the following recipe to enjoy them in a smoothie.
Mixed Berry Smoothie for Two Ingredients: 120g each of blueberries & strawberries, 150ml vanilla yoghurt, 250ml milk + an optional scoop of vanilla ice cream Method: blend all the above ingredients until smooth, pour into your favourite glass and enjoy!

What makes Canford Chase different? Your choice... your individuality...
Colten Care is a family-run company who have more than 20 years experience in building and managing high quality Care Homes, including Canford Chase. The prospect of moving into a care home may lead you to believe that you have to give up an independent and socially active life, but nothing could be further from the truth. Each home employs an Activity Organiser offering many and varied activities to enrich and fulfil each day, with the needs of an individual always taken into consideration. This, coupled with a resident-led hospitality programme which has an in-house chef, waitress service and locally sourced home-cooked food as standard, means that you can feel assured that your life choices will be acknowledged, respected and continued.
"A company well-known for their high quality care" Dr Hilary Jones

Westbourne Bookshop
Welcome to the September Book Review. I have just returned from 2 weeks holiday on sunny Southbourne beach so a big thanks to Joanna and Mary for their hard work and extra hours. I hope you all enjoyed the Air Festival - and our window – we’re waiting to see if we have won another trophy in the Window Display Competition. Fingers crossed! With the evenings beginning to draw in and the temperature dropping I, for one, am thinking about food and it seems the publishers have had the same idea. There is a fantastic selection of new cookery books this month, from favourite TV chefs to a gourmet vegetarian that has become my favourite cookbook of all time. Also a selection of good reads for the Autumn on the opposite page.

Music To Your Ears
musician arrives in Westbourne
Emma Hannon, who has been classically trained at Chetham’s School of Music and the Royal College of Music in London, relocated from Cheshire to Westbourne just four weeks ago. Emma was a member the National Youth Orchestra and has performed at most concert venues in the country including two BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. Emma has taught as a peripatetic at numerous schools such as The London Oratory and as a private instrumental teacher for the last 12 years. Despite leaving her musical career, family and friends back in Cheshire, Emma, her husband Vinny and two children, Max and Myla were extremely excited about the move and haven’t looked back since. “It was a lifestyle choice for us”, Emma explains. “We’ve always loved visiting Bournemouth, and Westbourne seemed like the perfect place to set up home. Aside from the beautiful beaches, great weather and friendly people it has so much to offer. There’s a vibrant music scene and I am looking forward to a long happy life and musical career here”. Clarinet and Piano Tuition Emma provides clarinet and piano tuition, either in the comfort of your own home, or in her music room. ”I also teach recorder, saxophone and provide aural and theory training”, adds Emma. “I’m very patient, and all levels of ability and age are welcome. My youngest pupil was just 3 and my eldest 65 years old; it’s never too late to learn an instrument! My long term goal is to set up my own music school, but it’s one step at a time. Teaching is a passion of mine and I can’t wait to get started again”. For enquiries and to book your first lesson, contact Emma on 07968 129070 / 01202 914425 or emmalhannon@hotmail.com
