Stavros Flatley to headline at Family Festival The Bournemouth Family Festival is back for a 4th year and takes place on Thursday 25th July from 10am to 4pm at Meyrick Park, just 20 minutes walk from Westbourne through the gardens.

The annual event is free to attend and supports the national Playday campaign. The festival encourages and supports children in our communities to celebrate their right to play.

Britain’s Got Talent finalists Stavros Flatley, are headlining and entertaining children and adults alike with their fantastic high energy dance routines.

The event is extremely popular and a fantastic day out for all with entertainment ranging from live music, shows, interactive workshops, bouncy castles, dancing and play activities. Look out for zorbing, a ball pit, train rides and a teacups ride! The Rotary Club of Westbourne will also be on duty offering a fantastic selection of food and drink during the festival.

Polo Returns to Sandbanks The renowned British Beach Polo Championships is set to bring widespread sporting entertainment, returning for a 5th year. Held on Sandbanks Beach on Friday 12th & Saturday 13th July, teams from England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales will compete for the Championship title.

With an extra-large orange ball designed not to get lost in the sand, the games are fast, furious and definitely worth watching. As well as the matches, join the Oakley Professional Beach Volleyball Team or the 4 x 4 Polo Pony Charity Race off the pitch, to be part of their exciting sporting and social activities. Be sure to also enjoy the Fashion Show, Retail Village, live music on Friday and an electric club night on Saturday.

West Cliff Pharmacy Fast and friendly pharmacy celebrates 1st Anniversary

West Cliff Pharmacy at the Poole Road Medical Centre opened their doors in July 2012, and are delighted to be celebrating their 1st year with a brand new team and some impressive developments.

The new dispensing chemist offers a wide range of services including a repeat prescription collection for patients of all surgeries in the west of Bournemouth and the east of Poole, meaning you don’t need to be registered with the Medical Centre to use their services.

We spoke to Pharmacist Dee Loughman who told us more, “when the surgery is open so is the pharmacy, which means patients can get their medicine straight away”. New Musical Debuts in Bournemouth Could YOU be Patrick Brady?

¡No Pasarán! is an exciting new musical, with an original story, debuting this October in Bournemouth.

We met up with Roy Gaynor, the minstrel behind the story, music and lyrics of ¡No Pasarán! Roy started by briefly explaining the main story, “Set during the Spanish Civil War of 1936 - 1939, it’s a story of love, friendship and selflessness and the heroism of the Spanish people on both sides and of the volunteers of the International Brigades who went to Spain to fight fascism.”

After an initial idea 20 years ago, Roy has focused on the project in the last 4 years and has worked with award winning Royal College of Music graduate Doug Gould on orchestration. There are almost 40 original songs in the show which unveils the compelling story over two and a half hours. The spectacle makes use of top of the range Barco digital cinema projectors for still and video scenery projections to help the audience see, hear and feel the story unfold.

Roy explained the idea of the local premier is to invite investors and build interest with an eye on a West End production.

Rehearsals are underway but a leading man is needed to head up a great cast so are you Patrick Brady? If you are a tenor (if you are unsure about what voice you have but can sing those key songs from Les Mis really well) then you could be Patrick! The October 2013 production of ¡No Pasarán! is a world premier and is directed by Margaret Coltman, a veteran of almost 100 productions in London and No Pasarán means ‘They around the UK. Shall not Pass’ and

was a defiant slogan used during the civil war by the people of Madrid as they defended the city against Franco's military uprising.

Tickets are on sale now for the premier being held at the De La Salle Theatre in Southbourne. All profits from this run are going to The Brain Tumour Charity.

Westbourne’s Music Scene Aaron Gregory’s Local Music Update

Introducing Aaron Gregory We’re delighted to have Aaron Gregory on board writing our new local music scene column.

A key venue that has flown the flag for local music in Westbourne over the years is Centre Stage in Queens Road. This is an amazing venue, which gives the audience the unique chance of seeing touring artists and comedians in an intimate setting. In candlelit surroundings, a really beautiful and community atmosphere is created, the music is always amazing too.

If getting up and dancing is your thing, every Wednesday night is jazz club. Jazz is making a comeback and Centre Stage is at the forefront of the revival. My not-to-be-missed show of the month is the Daryl Ford Trio at Daryl Ford Trio Centre Stage on the 31st July. The jazz trio comprising Daryl Ford on piano and vocals, Simon Collins on double bass and Sam Bachell on drums have become a well-known act on the local scene and are great fun.

Finally if you’re a fan of comedy and free food get to Rubyz Lounge (next door to Centre Stage) on every last Thursday of the month. It is the hidden secret of Bournemouth entertainment, high level comedians playing for free while you enjoy the food, I cannot think of a better way to spend my Thursdays.

On Thursday 13th July you can see Sticky Fingers at The Winchester. Hailing from Australia they bring a heady blend of psych surf dub garage to the UK. They are supported by 'Dirty Jerkers' and the up and coming acoustic talents of Matt McGowan.

Fine Dining at The Riviera Restaurant Review

We were delighted to visit The Conservatory Restaurant at The Riviera to sample their menu.

With views over Alum Chine and across Bournemouth Bay to the Isle of Wight, the restaurant is bright, elegant and air-conditioned. It’s all designed to create a comfortable ambiance for you to enjoy your meal, spoiler alert, which we did!

The head chef is award winning Simon Fennell, who had worked at the Montague Arms for more than 10 years. He is joined by the extremely talented David Dunn who worked at The Edge.

We were seated by the window and were treated to a cloudless sky and sea views. After choosing the well rounded Cambio Chilean Merlot (£15.95 a bottle) we had a good look through the set menu.

The tempting selection had a good range but the style is definitely ‘Classic British’. We finally decided on starters of assiette of beetroot served with crumbed brie bites and a generous ham hock terrine. Both starters were completely gorgeous and portioned to a perfect size to leave you ready for the main course.

The choices of main were solid and we picked the salmon with sweet potato mash and steak with triple fried chips. Both mains were served with a side dish of vegetables and all tasted wonderful, the steak cooked to order and again well portioned.

After a pause to work on the bottle of Cambio, we had another tough decision, which desserts to try. Two of our favourites were the winners, Eton Mess and Dorset apple cake. The Eton Mess was so beautiful on the plate it’s ‘mess’ credentials may have been undermined, but it was a real treat on the tongue! The Dorset apple cake was wonderfully moist and served with crème anglaise, here the portion could have been slightly larger but my waistline was glad it wasn’t.

At a very reasonable set price of £25 for 3 courses we can definitely recommend visiting the Riviera this summer.
