Westbourne - Have Your Say! Find out what people think about local issues
In a new regular section we will be asking for your thoughts on local issues. It’s a chance to share your feedback and see what others are saying. In our second poll we asked:
“If you were Mayor for the day, what changes would you make to the local area?” “Stop these takeaways moving in, don't want it stinking like Charminster.” David commented on Facebook “I would stop persecuting the motorist. Get rid of so many yellow lines and remove the built out sections on the high street on Poole Road, it’s killing the retail trade. I would also like to see building societies return to Westbourne, they’re better for the older generation.” David Willitts submitted his comment by phone “An outside market every Friday and Saturday would bring more people to the area : )” Dave commented on Facebook “Sort the pavements out around here, I'm a wheelchair user, and I have to say that,"Beyond a joke" is putting it mildly.” Simon commented on www.westbourne.info The responses shown here are a representative selection of comments submitted by email, on our Facebook page and comments from the public. They do not represent the views of the Magazine or Bournemouth Publishing.
9
“Why do we have 2 big issue sellers in Westbourne? I get sick of being offered the thing every day - twice a day. Guess they think the rich old folk are a soft touch. You see less in Bournemouth and none at Castlepoint!” Amy commented on www.westbourne.info “Have free parking for 2 hours in Westbourne to help the traders! And tell the oh great Poo Bahs at the council offices to be more flexible when asked for help with events etc to try and attract more visitors to the area! Do they want their business rates or would they rather have empty shops?” Tessa commented on Facebook “Stop the giant Navitus wind farm.” Philip commented on Facebook “Less parking permits given to LV so us actually visiting Westbourne with the intention to spend have a chance of parking.” Sarah commented on www.westbourne.info Have Your Say - Next Edition The council recently spent £76,000 on a basic sign that appears on a bridge over the A338 as you enter Bournemouth. For our next edition we’re asking: “Do you like the new sign?” and “What would you spend £76,000 on locally?” Submit your answers by email to editor@westbourne.info

Bonjour Le Petit Prince New patisserie opens in Westbourne
Recently opened in Westbourne, Le Petit Prince is a delightful family run bakery and patisserie. We met up with owner Michael to find out more about Le Petit Prince. Michael has been in the industry for over 30 years, having completed his training in France and specialising in Patisserie, sugarcraft and chocolate work, in London and the far east. This year he took a leap of faith to return to his passion, opening a unique bakery patisserie serving top quality bread and cakes - the traditional way. “Everything is freshly made on the premises daily” explains Michael. “We don’t use any preservatives or additives and offer a wide range including Pain de Campagne, a variety of sour doughs, Rye bread, Jewish Cholla bread, hand-made croissants, scones and french baguettes. We will be offering gluten free and other intolerance products soon.” It doesn’t stop there either. Le Petit Prince make whole cakes to order, small individual fine french cakes, chocolate brownies, a variety of scrumptious cheesecakes, choux buns with macaroons and much more. Westbourne is not short of places to eat and drink but Le Petit Prince is already proving to be one of the most popular, “We believe we serve the best coffee in town, having been told so by many many customers, with freshly ground beans made in front of you. Our range of sandwiches is created using bread just out of the oven and using locally sourced products, with a very creative menu.” As the festive seasons approaches keep Le Petit Prince in mind, “We are taking orders for now and Christmas and will do small parties or special occasions to make your occasion that more memorable - just have a chat with us!” So whether you live or work in Westbourne, next time you are passing, pop in for a fabulous breakfast croissant on the way to work, or a box of treats for the office and fresh bread.

Westbourne’s Music Scene Aaron Gregory’s Local Music Guide
www.facebook.com/aarongregorymusic
About Aaron Gregory We’re delighted to have Aaron Gregory on board writing our regular local music scene column. Aaron is a Bournemouth based singer songwriter who has been described by Rock Regeneration as a pillar of the local music scene. Can you believe it! The last time I wrote this column we were fast approaching one of the best summers on record, filled with BBQs, festivals and the return of the Rolling Stones. However by the time you will be reading this summer will be over and Autumn will be closing in. Fear not however because there are many amazing events coming up in Bournemouth and especially Westbourne in the coming months to make you forget the Autumn Blues. One event that is sure to capture the imagination is the Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival, running in September and October. This annual event mixes art, dance, comedy and music at multiple venues all over Bournemouth including Westbourne. See full event details at www.artsbournemouth.org.uk. A must see event John Cooper Clarke of this festival that I have picked out is from punk poet John Cooper Clarke, performing at the Royal Bath Hotel on 22nd September. John is a legendary poet and it is very rare to see him in such intimate surroundings, he is also fresh British Sea Power from donating a track to the Arctic Monkeys for their new album. Also playing the festival is British Sea Power at the Pier Theatre on 12th October. They have played some amazing shows here in the past and are worth dedicating an evening too.
13
Another amazing event happening is the Oxjam Takeover Festival on 19th October. This festival takes place at multiple venues across Bournemouth including Westbourne and the Triangle (venues and acts still being confirmed at the time of press). It is a fantastic festival that gathers local acts for a special one off set of gigs, all to raise money for Oxfam causes. Keep your eyes peeled on the Oxjam Bournemouth Facebook page to keep up to date with timings. A new venue for music that has popped up in Westbourne is Rock Restaurant. This is the perfect place to go if you enjoy listening to your music whilst sampling some of the best local foods. I really enjoy the fresh seafood and wine deal and being an old church means it is the perfect venue to enjoy acoustic vibes. Another great venue is the Centre Stage/Rubyz Lounge on Queens Road. Boasting a wide variety including Chicken Soup Choir evenings, stand up comedy, cabaret and folk music, it is perfect for any occasion. One night I truly recommend is the Rib Tickler Comedy Night on the last Thursday of every month. This night has free entry and showcases the best up and coming comedy. With regular performances from the infamous Dame Kitty it never disappoints. There’s so much happening this month to keep your artistic pallets’ whetted; I’m excited just thinking about it!
Aaron’s Top Five And finally, five other unmissable shows coming up across the area: 9 September: Joel Gregory @ Cellar Bar, Boscombe 10 October: Spector @ Sixty Million Postcards, Bournemouth 11 October: Grand Theft Audio Presents SLAM, The Winchester 19 October: Oxjam Festival, Multiple venues, Bournemouth 30 October: Beth Johnstone @ Urban Reef, Boscombe Seafront

Arts By The Sea Festival 2013
Immerse yourself in 23 amazing Autumn days of the arts
Prepare yourself for music, dance, art, film, visual arts, spoken word and so much more, for Bournemouth’s third ‘Arts By The Sea Festival’, an explosion of entertainment for all the family. Making the most of the town’s top locations - the seafront, Lower Gardens and the town centre, as well as other unexpected places and spaces in Bournemouth, the multi-artform festival runs from 20th September to the 12th October 2013, and offers more than 50 free and ticketed arts events. The opening weekend of 20-22nd September sees an exciting free outdoor celebration for all the family to launch the festival in real style. Mutoid Waste (who created the futuristic vehicles for the London Paralympic Closing Ceremony last year), will create a huge stir with their giant articulated creations parading the beach. The Regular Joes are back from performing at Buckingham Palace, this 11-piece swing and jive band are not to be missed in the Lower Gardens. In addition, lots of events – including light installations, film screenings, live music and dance, street performance and a vintage market will take place in the town centre, lower gardens and seafront. Our top picks include special showings of Alfred Hitchcock’s early films restored by the British Film Institute, accompanied by live music from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra. Back by popular demand is the Silent Disco on Saturday 21st October at Pavilion Dance. It’s the latest craze including two DJs, lots of wireless headphones and pure fun. Over the three weeks residents and visitors alike can expect all kinds of delights; including The Art of Visual Effects - an opportunity to take a behind-the scenes look at some of the world’s most spectacular visual effects created for award winning films and animations, such as Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean and Harry Potter. This year there’s a distinct cinema and ‘live score’ element to the festival.
29
Also at the festival will be the only vintage mobile cinema left in the country, with its unique slice of cinema history. And while you're watching light trails and getting involved with the parades, why not feast on some of the great tasting gourmet foods on offer in The Square throughout the opening weekend? With events happening every single day, you are guaranteed to find something for all the family to enjoy. If you fancy experiecing some of the wonderful events during the festival we’ve hand picked a couple of the best - all within walking distance of Westbourne.
Conversations with Sound can be enjoyed, for free, on Sunday 22nd September at 12 noon in the central gardens, near the tennis courts. Led by Jamie McDermott and working with local choral singers, this performance interacts with mundane spaces in subversive ways – making public installations of sounds and music from the reactions and interactions of the public in real time. Jamie McDermott is known for his strikingly individual counter-tenor voice and whose unique spectacles have been performed at the V&A Museum, South Bank Centre and Barbican Hall.
