CITY OF WEST KELOWNA
A NOTE FROM
Office hours: 8:30am-4:30pm Monday to Friday (excluding Stat Holidays) GENERAL INQUIRIES
Mayor Doug Findlater West Kelowna is an active community and I am pleased to present you with our 2018 Fall Recreation Guide. Take a quick look; you will see that there are so many great programs, activities and events for you to participate in. While the cooler weather is approaching, the fall season is a beautiful time in West Kelowna to continue being active, committing to your health and well-being through exercise and recreation. Due to popular demand a third night of Drop in Pickleball has been added at Mar Jok Elementary School on Thursday and a morning Zumba class has been added at the Westbank Lions Community Centre. The City of West Kelowna would like to thank the BC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA) for the generous grant, which will help us to expand the
Afterschool Learn to Skate Program. As well, in partnership with the BCRPA, the City will be able to offer Activage and Choose to Move fitness programs at no cost to participants. These programs are geared towards seniors who are not currently active and provides research information to the University of British Columbia. I am looking forward to an expanded Light Up this year with the popular band Cod Gone Wild headlining. Make sure to keep an eye on our social media pages for more information on this exciting event. This fall I encourage you to take full advantage of the opportunities offered in this guide and stay active in West Kelowna - a wonderful place to live, work and play.

Research shows that participation in sport and recreation increases a child’s chance of success in life.
Some of the criterion to apply for the Jumpstart program includes: • Eligible children are between the ages 4 to 18 years. • Eligible children participating in sport and recreation in West Kelowna and Peachland. • Funding goes to individuals, not to teams. • Up to $600 per child can be allocated per year. • Funding should be for a sustained program that lasts a season therefore a one-week camp would not qualify. • Funding can be provided to the same child for successive seasons, although the goal is that Jump Start continues to fund new children.
The West Kelowna chapter is made up of organizations that provide sport and recreation opportunities for children in our community including: West Kelowna Recreation and Culture, Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs, Westbank First Nations, Kids Sport and the West Kelowna Canadian Tire store.
• Funding preference is to pay for registration fees with consideration to fund equipment or transportation costs on a case by case basis. • Applications are not retroactive and must be submitted before the start of the season. Canadian Tire Jumpstart® has helped give more than 159,573 kids in financial need, the chance to play. Funding is based on the individual child’s financial need. The goal is to help those children who would not have been able to participate in a physical activity without the assistance of the JumpStart program.

KidSport™ is a community based sport-funding program that provides grants for children ages 18 and under. There are over 30 community chapters in BC and over 175 chapters across Canada. KidSport™ works to eliminate the financial barriers to sport participation, so all kids can play. In March 2011 the West Kelowna KidSport™ Chapter began awarding groups to help children and youth participate in sport programs. Fall 2018 | West Kelowna Recreation Guide | Think Active Be Active
Congratulations Team Okanagan! From their beginnings as participants in a City of West Kelowna Recreation program on early Monday mornings, these skaters were able to make the most of the practise time and bring home an impressive seven medals from the ISU International Adult Figure Skating Competition.
Skate and added a silver medal in the Bronze Ladies IV Artistic event.
The event, which was held in Oberstdorf Germany, from May 14-18, 2018 featured 771 skaters representing 34 ISU member countries, including 68 skaters from Canada.
In the Silver Ladies IV Artistic and Free Skating events, Maureen Barnes brought home a pair of bronze medals.
Isabella Ciocoiu, picked up a silver in the Silver Ladies III Artistic event and a bronze in the Silver Ladies III Free Skating event.
Completing the Okanagan’s medal haul was Winfield’s Wendy Ord, who picked up a bronze in the Bronze Ladies III Free Skating Event. Corinne Macasso, Henrietta Penney, Lesley Ricci and Karen Smith all skated well and had impressive performances, but were unable to find the podium against stiff competition. This year’s event was the 14th annual of this particular ISU competition, which is open to adult skater between the ages of 28-80.
Team Okanagan consists of members from West Kelowna, Kelowna and Lake Country who range from 46 to 77-years-old. West Kelowna’s Donna Bergvinson struck gold with a personal best score of 27.24 in the Bronze Ladies IV Free
Fall 2018 | West Kelowna Recreation Guide | Think Active Be Active

Not everyone can get up and down off the floor easily, making regular yoga classes difficult. Chair yoga is a gentle practice in which postures and breathing exercises are performed while seated or with the aid of a chair. Benefits include increased balance, circulation, strength, flexibility, range of motion, and stress reduction. Chair yoga is recommended for those with arthritis, osteoporosis, cancer recovery, carpal tunnel syndrome, chronic fatigue syndrome, multiple sclerosis, post-op rehabilitation, and others with limited mobility. Aboriginal Coaching Module
The Aboriginal Coaching Modules (ACM) is a professional development training tool for Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal coaches who coach Aboriginal athletes, as they become certified through the NCCP. The professional development of Aboriginal coaches through NCCP certification has been identified by the Aboriginal Sport Circle (ASC) as a national priority. In order to educate and promote the value of the NCCP and to establish meaningful participation of Aboriginal peoples in this national program, the ASC embarked on a multi-year process to develop supplemental training material for Aboriginal coaches taking NCCP workshops. The result of this process is the Aboriginal Coaching Modules (ACM), which responds to the need for a national training curriculum with content that reflects the uniqueness of Aboriginal cultures, values, and lifestyles.
