Fall is upon us in West Kelowna. Take a moment to enjoy the fresh air, and beautiful fall colours. The Fall Recreation Guide offers a wide range of activities for all interests, ages and abilities. There is something for everyone to enjoy. The City of West Kelowna would like to thank the BC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA) for a successful partnership with the continuation of the Activage and Choose to Move fitness programs at no cost to participants. These programs are geared towards seniors who are not currently active and provides research information to
the University of British Columbia. The BCRPA has also partnered with the City of West Kelowna to offer the SIRvivor BC: Prostate Cancer Exercise Program. BCRPA is working in collaboration with the Vancouver Prostate Centre. While you are looking through these pages you will notice a variety of new programs including Canning and Preserving, How to Open an Etsy Shop and Pottery. The City is also excited to be able to utilize the commercial grade kitchen at the Westbank Lions Community Centre for The Art of Persian Cooking Class, which includes vegan options. West Kelowna Council look forward to seeing you at the popular Winter Light Up on Friday, December 6 from 5:00pm to 8:00pm on the fabulous Brown Road. This Fall, take the opportunity to get involved and stay active in West Kelowna – a wonderful place to live, work and play.

Research shows that participation in sport and recreation increases a child’s chance of success in life.
Some of the criterion to apply for the Jumpstart program includes: • Eligible children are between the ages of 4 and 18 years. • Eligible children participating in sport and recreation in West Kelowna and Peachland. • Funding goes to individuals, not to teams. • Up to $600 per child can be allocated per year. • Funding should be for a sustained program that lasts a season therefore a one-week camp would not qualify. • Funding can be provided to the same child for successive seasons, although the goal is that Jump Start continues to fund new children. • Funding preference is to pay for registration fees with consideration to fund equipment or transportation costs on a case by case basis. • Applications are not retroactive and must be submitted before the start of the season.

Canadian Tire Jumpstart® has helped give more than 159,573 kids in financial need, the chance to play. Funding is based on the individual child’s financial need. The goal is to help those children who would not have been able to participate in a physical activity without the assistance of the JumpStart program.
The West Kelowna chapter is made up of organizations that provide sport and recreation opportunities for children in our community including: West Kelowna Recreation and Culture, Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs, Westbank First Nations, Kids Sport and the West Kelowna Canadian Tire store.

645 Dodd Road • Kelowna, B.C. • 250-469-8854 • pacificsportokanagan.com PacificSport Okanagan is a regional sport centre that educates, inspires and engages communities in the sport pathway, from playground to podium. The not-for-profit Society is connected to a network of five PacificSport centres and three national campuses (Canadian Sport Institute) across the province. The Okanagan Regional Sport Centre has developed a variety of programs and services to support Okanagan-based sport initiatives at all stages of the Canadian Sport for Life (CS4L) continuum. Together, we strive to provide purposeful program delivery that “empowers our communities to play, participate and perform at their best, through sport”. NCCP Coaching Courses As part of National Coaches Week, 2019, PacificSport Okanagan is offering coaching courses to assist in coach development across the valley. Physical Literacy: What Is It?
Making Ethical Decisions
$60
Physical literacy is the ability of a person to confidently perform movement skills in different environments such as on the ground, in the air, on ice or snow, or in water. If a child feels confident in their movement skills before the age of 12, they are more likely to be active for life. Movement skills are life skills, and include agility, balance, coordination, speed, running, jumping, throwing, catching, striking, etc.
Completing NCCP Psychology of Performance will allow you to: • Help athletes learn to manage distractions and use visualization techniques to prepare themselves technically and tactically for training and competition; • Learn how to work with athletes or teams to identify performance and process goals related to their ability to focus on performance; • Learn debriefing skills that can be used to help athletes assess their performance in both training and competition.
How do we learn movement skills and physical literacy? Just like a child has to be taught their ABCs before they can write words or be taught numbers before they can add and subtract, children need to be taught how to move. Like the other forms of literacy, physical literacy is best taught at a young age. Our programs focus on teaching kids the movement skills so they can feel confident in playing games and sports with their friends! Our staff are trained in NCCP: Fundamental Movement Skills, Athletics BC Run Jump Throw, Gymnastics BC Kids Can Move, and other physical literacy based programs.
Upon completing the MED training you’ll be able to: • Analyze a challenging situation and determine if it has moral, legal or ethical implications; • Apply the NCCP Ethical Decision-Making Model to properly respond to each situation in a way that is consistent with the NCCP Code of Ethics. 15753 Sa
