Recreation Service Delivery during COVID 19 Pandemic

The physical, mental and social benefits of participating in recreation activities are essential to the good health and quality of life of the people in our community. The City of West Kelowna is committed to ensuring public health and safety in the delivery of its recreational services. We will provide programs in keeping with the regulations and guidelines set out by British Columbia Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We will adapt our procedures for delivering summer recreation programs and events as best we can in order to maximize opportunities for people to participate. However, we must follow the health and safety requirements related to preventing the spread of COVID-19. The City cannot offer any recreational programs and events that do not meet these requirements. We value you, we miss seeing your smiling faces, and we thank you for your understanding as we continue to make the necessary adjustments during these unprecedented times.

A NOTE FROM

in touch with us as changes occur from week to week. Please also sign up for our e-notifications at westkelownacity.ca/subscribe to receive news direct to your email when we announce additional facilities opening and program restarts. I’m grateful to everyone for doing their part to help flatten the curve of COVID-19 by limiting gathering sizes, maintaining physical distances, practicing thorough handwashing and staying home when necessary. These preventative actions and all of us working together will help stop the spread of COVID-19. Together, we can get through this and enjoy increased recreation! The Greater Westside is a wonderful place to live, work and play, so please explore all the indoor and outdoor recreation opportunities available today in the days and months ahead. On behalf of our City Council, thank you for all that you’re doing to be kind, be calm and be safe.

It’s been an unprecedented time for our community during COVID-19 and we’re hoping that our new normal includes much more enjoyment of the beauty and recreation of our Greater Westside. Our parks, trails and sports courts are open for everyone to enjoy as we continue to remain socially distanced to help prevent the spread of COVID-19. Getting outdoors now is especially important for those who have been feeling the effects of these challenging times. With 112 beaches, boat launches, parks, sport fields and trails in our community, it is easy to find a place to take advantage of the beautiful Okanagan summer. We’ll continue to follow the recommendations of our Provincial Health Officer, along with lead organizations such as the BC Recreation and Parks Association, as we look to gradually and safely restart recreational programming and determine when and how best to reopen our facilities. Please check the pages of our Summer Rec Guide to see what we have planned for the next few months, and thank you for keeping

I hope this message finds our loyal patrons and their families, safe and in good health, while we continue to bounce-back from the COVID-19 pandemic. It is unfortunate that we lost our entire “Spring Program Set” after being notified by the Provincial Health Office and City of West Kelowna, to close the Johnson-Bentley Pool facility, on March 17, 2020.

Message from the President:

JOHNSON BENTLEY MEMORIAL AQUATIC CENTRE

• Home Safe Class • Eagle Adventure Summer Day Camp

Consequently, all the hard work put in by our program team who spent two months preparing programs, scheduling instructors and classes, acquiring the necessary equipment and supplies all came to a sudden halt. So, I do want to publicly acknowledge their efforts which were not able to be realized. This will result in what we will call a “Soft Opening” of the Facility for the summer months with some reduced hours of operation and several modified class offerings in order to comply with anticipated Health Department requirements. Please take the time to review the following pages and make note that registration starts June 8. Hopefully, by the fall we will be able to provide you with a variety of classes beginning the week of September 14, 2020. If you have any questions or concerns, please call our front desk at 778-797-7665. Sincerely, V. Stedham Active Living Entreprises Ltd. JBMAC Pool

Middle Childhood Programs Grade K-9 Daycamps Art Camp 7-14yrs City of West Kelowna is proud to announce our adoption of ePACT Network for better safety! ePACT is a secure emergency network, that we will use to collect medical and emergency contact information electronically. Not only will ePACT replace paper forms, but it will also ensure we have a way to communicate with you in the event of an illness, injury, or larger scale emergency.

Why are we using ePACT?

To save you time-With ePACT, you only need to complete your child’s information once, and then verify that it is still correct for additional programs or subsequent years (which can be done in just two minutes)!

This day camp will include a wide variety of fine arts activities including drawing crayons, pencil crayons, pastels, painting (acrylic) and clay sculpture. Students will practice converging perspective using landscapes, animals, human body proportions as well as still life arrangement. (Children may bring their own snacks and drinks.) Better support-ePACT makes it easy for you to share comprehensive health and emergency contact details, so we can provide the best support to your child. Plus, you can update this anytime and we will automatically receive those new details.

How it works

ePACT makes it far easier for you to share emergency information with us, while also ensuring we have access to records anytime, anywhere with the mobile app-even without an internet connection. Rest assured that you always own your account and the information in it. Plus, ePACT maintains the same levels of security as online banking, and limits access only to the administrators we assign for enhanced privacy.

Red ball tennis camp uses “red balls” designed to make it easier for beginner and recreational children to learn the game. The “red” tennis balls are designed to play slower allowing greater opportunity for players to rally and therefore enhance their enjoyment of tennis. It is the expectation that the child understands the seriousness of staying in their space and those who are unable to do this will be not be able to stay in the camp. We will be providing time outside and will be looking at options to fill the day with a variety of activities. That being said it will look very different from our “regular” camps. Finding physical activities and games to play, without sharing equipment while staying the required distance apart is challenging. We ask for your patience and understanding. Research shows that participation in sport and recreation increases a child’s chance of success in life.

Some of the criterion to apply for the Jumpstart program includes: • Eligible children are between the ages of 4 and 18 years. • Eligible children participating in sport and recreation in West Kelowna and Peachland. • Funding goes to individuals, not to teams. • Up to $600 per child can be allocated per year. • Funding should be for a sustained program that lasts a season therefore a one-week camp would not qualify. • Funding can be provided to the same child for successive seasons, although the goal is that Jump Start continues to fund new children. • Funding preference is to pay for registration fees with consideration to fund equipment or transportation costs on a case by case basis.

778-797-8800

CITY OF WEST KELOWNA RECREATION AND CULTURE

• Applications are not retroactive and must be submitted before the start of the season.

22

Canadian Tire Jumpstart® has helped give more than 159,573 kids in financial need, the chance to play. Funding is based on the individual child’s financial need. The goal is to help those children who would not have been able to participate in a physical activity without the assistance of the JumpStart program.

West Kelowna KidSport Chapter

The West Kelowna chapter is made up of organizations that provide sport and recreation opportunities for children in our community including: West Kelowna Recreation and Culture, Boys and Girls Clubs of the Okanagans, Westbank First Nations, Kids Sport and the West Kelowna Canadian Tire store.

KidSport™ is a community based sport-funding program that provides grants for children ages 18 and under. There are over 30 community chapters in BC and over 175 chapters across Canada. In March 2011 the West Kelowna KidSport™ Chapter began awarding groups to help children and youth participate in sport programs.
