CITY OF WEST KELOWNA

A NOTE FROM

throwing a Frisbee with a friend or two at our sports fields are also activities that remain accessible for all of us to enjoy. Our staff have done amazing work during these difficult COVID-19 times. I would like to acknowledge their constant commitment to ensuring public safety as the top priority as our facilities, programs and services have reopened. The City is following approved BC Recreation and Parks Association and Return to Sport guidelines for modified programming and coordinated facility reopening’s. These guidelines follow provincial health standards for sanitization, two-meter distances between participants and limited gathering sizes within our facilities and program spaces. If you have suggestions, questions or need more information, please call or email our recreational staff who have a wealth of ideas and local knowledge to help! On behalf of Council, thank you for continuing to be calm, be kind and be safe as you return to recreation across the beautiful Greater Westside. Mayor Gord Milsom

This Fall remains a challenging time as we all work together to fight the spread of COVID-19. Our City remains grateful and fortunate to re-launch a number of recreation activities as we continue to adhere to provincial health regulations. It is thanks to the guidance and sciencebased expertise of BC’s Provincial Health Officer, and the care and attention of our community here and throughout British Columbia, that we can safely enjoy a variety of our recreation facilities, programs and services. I encourage you to flip through the pages of our 2020 Fall Rec Guide to determine what activities may be best suited to you and your family during COVID-19. If you or your loved ones are not ready to return to our indoor recreational facilities and registration-based programs, we understand! We are so fortunate to have more than 100 outdoor amenities including boat launches, parks, sports courts, fields and trails to enjoy across the Greater Westside. Autumn is a beautiful season to explore activities such as hiking and mountain bike trails, kayaking on Okanagan Lake or walking along the Gellatly Bay multi-use trail. The physical, mental and social benefits of participating in recreation activities are essential to the good health and quality of life of the people in our community. The City of West Kelowna is committed to ensuring public health and safety in the delivery of its recreational services. We will provide programs in keeping with the regulations and guidelines set out by British Columbia Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry during the COVID-19 pandemic.

We will adapt our procedures for delivering summer recreation programs and events as best we can in order to maximize opportunities for people to participate. However, we must follow the health and safety requirements related to preventing the spread of COVID-19. The City cannot offer any recreational programs and events that do not meet these requirements. We value you, we miss seeing your smiling faces, and we thank you for your understanding as we continue to make the necessary adjustments during these unprecedented times.

I moved to Kelowna from Victoria in January 2015 and started working here in September 2015. I am a certified instructor who loves teaching Group Fitness, Aqua Fitness, Cycle classes and older adult fitness classes. I’ve been working at JBMAC for five years, and for the last two years I’ve been working as the Fitness Supervisor’s Assistant. In my late forties, I was diagnosed with Osteopenia. Instead of medication, I decided to start increasing my fitness level by doing weight baring exercises, which helped increase my bone density. I no longer have any signs of Osteopenia!

Back For The Future: Core Conditioning (M)

Intermediate Guitar for Adults 13yrs + (B)

According to Statistics Canada, four out of five adults between the ages of 30-50 will experience at least one episode of back pain affecting their ability to work and participate in physical activity. To optimize spinal health and maintain our Back for the Future, we need to strengthen all of the core muscles in a balanced manner. During this two-hour hands-on workshop participants will: • Identify the true “core muscles”. Did you know your pelvic floor and diaphragm are part of your core? • Learn how to identify common postural dysfunction and how to apply corrective exercises. • Take home a repertoire of safe and effective core conditioning exercises to start using immediately.

This guitar class is for people who have completed the beginner level and are looking for the next step. We’ll cover bar chords, advanced strumming, solos, finger picking plus song writing. Bring your own six-string guitar and pick to each lesson. INSTRUCTOR: Chris

Red Cross Parent & Tot Swim 4-36mths

The Red Cross Parent and Tot program is designed for infants/toddlers and their parents to learn aquatic skills and safety supervision tactics through structured play, songs and activities in a fun, safe environment. Children move through levels based on age.

Preschool swim lessons are NOT offered at this time due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the aquatic environment, preschoolers must be kept together for their safety and the format of these classes are very “hands on” from instructor to student. With social distancing being a mandate in public services, we CANNOT offer these levels safely at this time.

Red Cross Swim Kids 6-16yrs

This is a challenging 10-level program for school aged children. Five swimming strokes are taught and fitness is used to build endurance and promote individual success. Water safety skills are taught to all levels promoting “Prepare, Stay Safe, and Survive!” and making wise choices in and around the water.

Swim Kids 1 Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and physical distancing guidelines set by the Provincial Health Officer, we have made changes to the Red Cross Parent and Tot Swim Lessons. We are limiting the registration to four tots for each class with their parents, and parents will be instructed by a Water Safety Instructor trained to encourage physical distancing during the class.

Yoga for Back Care

Sore and stiff backs can prevent us from performing the activities we would like to do. For those with pain or injuries in the back, neck, shoulders, this class focuses on strengthening muscles to maintain a healthy back by increasing movement in the spine and improving postural alignment. The use of props in both active and more restful postures makes the poses accessible for all fitness levels. Relaxation techniques will also be introduced to alleviate symptoms of discomfort and improve overall well-being. All levels welcome, no previous yoga experience necessary. Bring a yoga mat.

The Long Form has many elements of Tai Chi Short Form and Is divided into three sections. Each section will be practiced and discussed at a relaxed and slow pace. Clinical tests have shown those who practice Tai Chi have stronger hearts, better circulation and greater flexibility and stability. This ancient Chinese exercise combines relaxed fluid movement with a calm, alert mental state to improve your entire well being. Learning just a few of these movements is a great start to a healthy body. Participants are reminded this is a scent-free environment. INSTRUCTOR: Kathy LOCATION: Lakeview Heights Community Hall

Research shows that participation in sport and recreation increases a child’s chance of success in life.

Some of the criterion to apply for the Jumpstart program includes: • Eligible children are between the ages of 4 and 18 years. • Eligible children participating in sport and recreation in West Kelowna and Peachland. • Funding goes to individuals, not to teams. • Up to $600 per child can be allocated per year. • Funding should be for a sustained program that lasts a season therefore a one-week camp would not qualify. • Funding can be provided to the same child for successive seasons, although the goal is that Jump Start continues to fund new children. • Funding preference is to pay for registration fees with consideration to fund equipment or transportation costs on a case by case basis.

778-797-8800

CITY OF WEST KELOWNA RECREATION AND CULTURE

• Applications are not retroactive and must be submitted before the start of the season.

44

Canadian Tire Jumpstart® has helped give more than 159,573 kids in financial need, the chance to play. Funding is based on the individual child’s financial need. The goal is to help those children who would not have been able to participate in a physical activity without the assistance of the JumpStart program.

West Kelowna KidSport Chapter

The West Kelowna chapter is made up of organizations that provide sport and recreation opportunities for children in our community including: West Kelowna Recreation and Culture, Boys and Girls Clubs of the Okanagans, Westbank First Nations, Kids Sport and the West Kelowna Canadian Tire store.
