I am proud to call West Kelowna home and to serve as our community’s Mayor for the next four years. I am also excited to bring you my first Mayor’s Message in the City of West Kelowna 2019 Spring Recreation Guide. Winter is now a memory, the days are longer, the weather is warmer and the Spring Recreation Guide has many great ways to enjoy spring. Thanks to our partnership with the BC Recreation and Parks Association (BCRPA), the City of West Kelowna is able to continue to offer Activage and Choose to Move fitness programs at no cost to participants. These great programs are geared towards seniors who are currently active and provides research information to the University of British Columbia. Courtesy of Fortis BC there will be a free St. Patrick’s Day Skate on Sunday, March 17th for parents and tots from 1:302:30pm and a public skate from 2:45-4:00pm. Come out in you

Bridge-Larry Cohen’s 2/1

Goren was replaced by Standard American and now Standard American is being replaced by 2/1. Have you noticed how many intermediate and advanced players use this system now instead of SAYC? Many bridge teachers are using 2/1 for their novice classes because this bidding system, overall, tends to be more accurate resulting in improved results. It is not a difficult transition from S.A. to 2/1 and Larry’s easy to understand booklet is great guide on how to use 90% of the 2/1 system. Even if you do not intend on switching systems, attending this course will help you defend and bid more effectively against teams who do use it. The textbook is mandatory at a cost of $20 or it can be purchased as an eBook through Amazon for $9.99. INSTRUCTOR: Wendy LOCATION: Westbank Lions Community Centre

Research shows that participation in sport and recreation increases a child’s chance of success in life.

Some of the criterion to apply for the Jumpstart program includes: • Eligible children are between the ages of 4 and 18 years. • Eligible children participating in sport and recreation in West Kelowna and Peachland. • Funding goes to individuals, not to teams. • Up to $600 per child can be allocated per year. • Funding should be for a sustained program that lasts a season therefore a one-week camp would not qualify. • Funding can be provided to the same child for successive seasons, although the goal is that Jump Start continues to fund new children. • Funding preference is to pay for registration fees with consideration to fund equipment or transportation costs on a case by case basis. • Applications are not retroactive and must be submitted before the start of the season.

For further details contact the City of West Kelowna Recreation and Culture Department at 778-797-8800 or Peachland Recreation 250-767-2547

West Kelowna KidSport Chapter

KidSport™ is a community based sport-funding program that provides grants for children ages 18 and under. There are over 30 community chapters in BC and over 175 chapters across Canada. KidSport™ works to eliminate the financial barriers to sport participation, so all kids can play. In March 2011 the West Kelowna KidSport™ Chapter began awarding groups to help children and youth participate in sport programs. For more information see the West Kelowna Recreation and Culture website at www.westkelownacity.ca or call the City of West Kelowna at 778-797-8800.

CITY OF WEST KELOWNA RECREATION AND CULTURE

Canadian Tire Jumpstart® has helped give more than 159,573 kids in financial need, the chance to play. Funding is based on the individual child’s financial need. The goal is to help those children who would not have been able to participate in a physical activity without the assistance of the JumpStart program.

The West Kelowna chapter is made up of organizations that provide sport and recreation opportunities for children in our community including: West Kelowna Recreation and Culture, Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs, Westbank First Nations, Kids Sport and the West Kelowna Canadian Tire store.

PREVENT WILDFIRES Nearly half of all wildfires in B.C. are caused by human carelessness. You can make a difference by following a few simple rules. • Heed prohibitions: check for bans and restrictions before striking the match • Camp responsibly: In B.C., campfires can’t be larger than 0.5 metres by 0.5 metres. Keep a shovel or at least eight litres of water nearby to extinguish your fire, and don’t forget to create a firebreak. That means making a one-metre debris-free area around your fire by scraping down to the dirt. Before leaving, ensure your campfire is completely out and the ashes cool to touch. • Phone it in: call 1-800-663-5555 or *5555 on your cell if you spot smoke, flames or an unattended campfire.

EVACUATION STAGES • Evacuation Order: You are at risk. Leave the area immediately. Local police or RCMP enforce evacuation orders. You are encouraged to register all family members at the reception centre so, emergency responders know that you are safe

Free!

• Evacuation Alert: Be ready to leave on short notice. If you leave before or during this alert, it’s called a voluntary evacuation • Evacuation Rescinded: All is currently safe and you can return home. Stay tuned for other possible evacuation alerts or orders

BACKCOUNTRY CLOSURES Wildfires can impact backcountry recreation, resulting in area closures or restrictions. Campers and provincial park visitors should check with BC Parks for fire restrictions and closures and recreation site and trail users can check with Recreation Sites and Trails BC.

FIRESMART YOUR PROPERTY More and more people are making their homes in woodland settings. While beautiful, these locations come with a greater wildfire risk. Ensure your home insurance is up-to-date and includes adequate coverage for fire damage. You can also help protect your property by planning ahead. Start by completing a risk assessment in BC’s FireSmart Manual.
