CITY OF WEST KELOWNA

A NOTE FROM

Office hours: 8:30am-4:30pm Monday to Friday (excluding Stat Holidays) GENERAL INQUIRIES

Mayor Doug Findlater Fall is an exciting time in West Kelowna, with fresh air, clear lakes and beautiful fall colours and a wide variety of recreation programs to keep us active. Take a quick look in the Fall 2017 Recreation Guide and you will see that there are so many great programs, activities and events for you to participate in. The Westbank Lion’s Community Centre is now being operated by the City of West Kelowna, this offers an opportunity for even more great programs. Try out new activities like yoga, quilting, Tai Chi, bridge or ball room dancing. West Kelowna has received tremendous financial support which has enable us to offer even more programs. In response from a growing young community and funding provided by the British Columbia Parks and Recreation Association, before and after school recreation programs will be offered at Mar Jok Elementary. With Canada celebrating

a big milestone this year, 150 years, the Federal Government introduced the Canada 150 Community Infrastructure Program. The City of West Kelowna received funding for sports field lighting at Rosewood Athletic Parks and Boucherie and Boucherie Baseball Diamonds. These infrastructure upgrades along with lighting at Anders Tennis Courts will be completed this fall, and will extend the playing hours at these facilities. Another successful program has been our Youth and Family Gym Nights in a neighbourhood setting at Mar Jok Elementary School. This fall we will be bringing these programs to Shannon Lake Elementary. Kids bring your mom and/or dad and enjoy a night of sports in the big gymnasium. A great way to get the whole family out together. Whether you are 8, 80 or anywhere in between, I’m sure you will find things of interest in the 2017 Fall Recreation Guide.

Research shows that participation in sport and recreation increases a child’s chance of success in life.

Some of the criterion to apply for the Jumpstart program includes: • Eligible children are between the ages of 4 and 18 years. • Eligible children participating in sport and recreation in West Kelowna and Peachland. • Funding goes to individuals, not to teams. • Up to $600 per child can be allocated per year. • Funding should be for a sustained program that lasts a season therefore a one-week camp would not qualify. • Funding can be provided to the same child for successive seasons, although the goal is that Jump Start continues to fund new children.

The West Kelowna chapter is made up of organizations that provide sport and recreation opportunities for children in our community including: West Kelowna Recreation and Culture, Okanagan Boys and Girls Clubs, Westbank First Nations, Kids Sport and the West Kelowna Canadian Tire store.

• Funding preference is to pay for registration fees with consideration to fund equipment or transportation costs on a case by case basis. • Applications are not retroactive and must be submitted before the start of the season. Canadian Tire Jumpstart® has helped give more than 159,573 kids in financial need, the chance to play. Funding is based on the individual child’s financial need. The goal is to help those children who would not have been able to participate in a physical activity without the assistance of the JumpStart program.

Whether you’re 45 or 95, it is never too late to take up yoga. You are only as old as you feel! Get the most out of your life now that you finally have time to do something for yourself and your own physical and mental development. Many problems associated with aging, such as circulatory disorders, arthritis and digestive complaints, are a result of lack of exercise, poor eating habits, and shallow breathing. Sore and stiff backs can prevent us from performing the activities we would like to do. For those with pain or injuries in the back, neck, shoulders, this class focuses on strengthening muscles to maintain a healthy back by increasing movement in the spine and improving postural alignment. The use of props in both active and more restful postures makes the poses accessible for all fitness levels. Relaxation techniques will also be introduced to alleviate symptoms of discomfort and improve overall well-being. All levels welcome, no previous yoga experience necessary. Bring a yoga mat.

Sitting at a desk all day can be detrimental to your physical and mental well-being. It’s said that sitting is the new smoking. The sedentary nature of office work can lead to desk-job-related health problems including bad posture, tightness in the hips and legs, back pain, eyestrain, and repetitive strain injuries. Counter these negative effects with yoga poses that target problem areas. Improve your body’s flexibility, strength, and joint range of motion. As an added bonus, yoga helps calm the mind, which can help you deal with stressful work environments.
