Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights

The feature at the weekly Film Club in Dingle’s Phoenix Cinema on Tuesday 1st November will be “Julieta”. Director Pedro Almodóvar revisits familiar themes of love, loss and reinvention in telling the tale of Julieta, a middle-aged woman living in Madrid with her boyfriend Lorenzo. After a chance meeting with a friend of her long-lost daughter, Julieta learns that she has resurfaced in Madrid. This begins a painful reflection by Julieta into her checkered past, flashing back to the moments of pain that define her current life. The following week on Tuesday November 8th the feature will be the taut and claustrophobic historical thriller “Anthropoid”. Starring Cillian Murphy and Jamie Dornan, the film is based on the extraordinary true story of “Operation Anthropoid,” the code name for the Czechoslovakian operatives’ mission to assassinate SS officer Reinhard Heydrich. Heydrich, the main architect behind the Final Solution, was the Reich’s third in command behind Hitler and Himmler and the leader of Nazi forces in Czechoslovakia. This gripping and tense movie follows two soldiers from the Czechoslovakian army-in-exile, Josef Gabčík and Jan Kubis , who are parachuted into their occupied homeland in December 1941. Notaí Ceolmhar ó Bhaile na nGall 2016 was the foundation year of Ballydavid's Wild Atlantic Band. Fifteen founding whistlers and five drummers passed away the early winter to the sound of music and craic in Tigh T.P The fledgling band's world premier took place on the eve of St. Patrick's Day with a memorable "March across the road" le na casaí cheoil accompanied by members of the Irish Naval Reserve and a brave coterie of acolytes brandishing their turf lit pikes. On their short journey the band was accompanied by T.V Cameras and media personnel. To our delight our efforts were transmitted on the 6 o’ clock news on RTE agus TG4 cómh maith. To further the development of the Band we are recommencing the practice sessions commencing on Friday 4th Nov @ 8pm in Tigh TP's. We are hoping to present a special Christmas patent in Tigh T.P's this year with the intention of raising some funds for the Cuan Counselling Service and we are looking for new members and some singers as well, to join the band and take part. Pumpkin Soup with Sage and Lemon Crème Fraîche

Chiropody Clinics Weekly in:

Dingle

Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School It is the perfect season for pumpkins and all types of squashes. While we may only see the large varieties in our shops for Halloween there are in fact so many different types. All of them will have different flavours but you will find that most have a sweet flavour and it will match so well with plenty of flavours such as nuts, sage, lemon, spices and greens. If you get your hand s different varieties experiment with them, roast them, fry them, boil them and you can even have them smoked. Try this seasonal soup and I promise you won’t be disappointed. Ingredients 2 red onions, peeled and diced knob of butter 2 cloves of garlic, crushed 1 carrot, peeled and diced 1 large pumpkin, peeled, scooped out and diced into large chunks 750ml of good vegetable stock (warm) seeds from the pumpkin a few sage leaves, chopped very finely 1 lemon, zested 2 tbsp. crème fraîche salt and pepper Method In a large pot over a low to medium heat add some butter and then the diced onions and a pinch of salt. Cook this for about five minutes then add the garlic. After about 2-3 minutes add the carrot and make sure you stir it occasionally. Allow this to cook for about 3 minutes before you add the pumpkin. By adding in the ingredients one by one this will help to give you more depth of flavour. Cook the pumpkin for 10 minutes. Add enough warm stock to cover the vegetables by about an inch. Season this well with salt and pepper. Simmer this for about 30 minutes. At this stage if you feel everything is cooked use your blender to bring it to a smooth soup. Taste it and season it well with salt and pepper. For the garnish mix the crème fraîche, sage and the lemon zest. Season this with a small pinch of salt. Toast the pumpkin seeds for 2-3 minutes in a dry pan. Once they are toasted scatter them over the soup and place a teaspoon of the crème fraîche in the middle of the soup. Enjoy!!! 10 West Kerry Live

Farming News Louis Murchan €150 Million 2.95% Interest Agri Cash Flow Support Loan

As part of the budget package, a total loan fund of €150 million which will support highly flexible loans for up to six years, for amounts up to €150,000, at an interest rate of 2.95%; and available to livestock, tillage and horticulture farmers. As of yet, it is not clear how this fucd will be dispersed, buts lets hope it is not given to one of the Big Three banks, as they have form in distributing loans, which resulted in a serious economic crash. The Credit Union sector should and must play a role in this, as they are the life & soul of local lending, and know the people on the ground, (forgive the pun). But that is preaching to the perverted. The essence of the scheme is good. These loans which form part of a three pillar strategy outlined in DAFM’s budget are aimed at strategically alleviating the pressures of income volatility, will enable farmers to improve the management of their cash flow and reduce the cost of their short term borrowings. The fund is to be provided for through funding of €25 million for a low interest agri-cash flow fund for farmers, to be developed by DAFM, including €11 million made available under the EU’s exceptional adjustment aid for milk and other livestock farmers which combined provides leverage for the €150 million fund.

Farm Hazardous Waste Collection Campaign 2016

Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Andrew Doyle T.D, today launched the Farm Hazardous Waste Collection scheme at Carnew Livestock Mart in Co. Wicklow. The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has teamed up with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Department of Communications, Climate Action and Environment, Teagasc, and local authorities, WEEE Ireland, European Recycling Platform (ERP) and Enva to operate ten bring centres for the collection of farm hazardous wastes across the country in October and November 2016. It is important to acknowledge the farmers who had supported and used the scheme in previous years (2013-2015) and early indications from the farming community are that 2016 will be as busy as previous years. All farmers are urged to avail of this opportunity to rid their farms of any such hazardous waste and that by doing so they will play their part in helping to prevent any hazardous waste incidents in the future. Local dates of note are: 12th November at Milltown Mart. Bring centres will open from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm. The following waste will not be accepted: • Clean triple rinsed empty pesticide & dairy hygiene containers. •

Silage wrap

Fertiliser and Feed bags

Bale netting and twine

Post Brexit Trade Efforts In Paris & London

The Minister for Agriculture Food & Marine, Michael Creed TD, will this week travel to Paris & London to continue efforts to promote the Irish agri-food sector, in the aftermath of the UK’s decision to exit the EU. Following on from a successful four country Trade Mission to South East Asia in early September. Irish exports grew to €10.8 billion in 2015. Food Wise 2025 has an ambitious target of €19 billion in exports by 2025. In order to meet this target, particularly in a post Brexit situation, no stone can be left unturned in terms of promoting Irish produce on a World stage, and there is no stage as big as SIAL to achieve this.

EU Milk Voluntary Supply Management Scheme

The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has announced the results of Phase 2 of the EU’s Voluntary Supply Management Scheme for the dairy sector. This phase of the scheme covers reductions in the three month period commencing 1 November to 31 January 2017. There were 556 applications from Irish dairy farmers for this phase with a total proposed reduction total of approximately 6.4 million litres. Across the EU there were applications for 98 million litres of reductions. The significant subscription rate for Phase I of the scheme has meant that less than 1% of the overall budget is available for this Phase II. Applicants for the scheme will only be compensated for 12.5% of the amount for which they applied. An example of how this will be applied is if someone applied for 10,000 litres reduction in output, they will be compensated for reducing by 1,250 litres or 12.5% of this reduction. They may of course reduce by the full amount if they so wish but will not be compensated for anything above 12.5% of this amount. DAFM will be in touch with the applicants for the scheme in the coming days

Interim Commonage Management Plans

Waking up on Friday morning, one wondered “where was the fire”, as phones rang across the country to advisors offices, with queries about the urgency to complete Interim Commonage Management Plans. Fear not, as this is not a complicated or long-drawn out process. It simply required your advisor to complete a one page form and sign it, then return it to te Commonage unit of GLAS Section in DAFM’s Johnstown Castle office. This could have been handled a bit better by DAFM as I for one was recovering from surgery in bed when the “fire” hit, and was as clueless as the next about what the rumpus was. Typical DAFM planning meant that there was a short window to a deadline, but fear not all and sundry. If this is what the Department want, it is what they will get. Forms completed and returned within a short timeframe.

Expected Extension To Bdgp / Carbon Navigator Deadline

Advance payments under the 2016 Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) and the Greening Payment began last week, with many (but not all) farmers receiving payment. Delays may be due to technical difficulties of just because not all payments can be made on the one day. Following recent discussions with the EU Commission, DAFM confirmed that the level of the advance payment is set at 70% for 2016 rather than 50% as provided for in the EU legislation. The increase in the number of farmers applying online for BPS and the introduction of preliminary checks for the first time this year has enabled DAFM to process the advance payment to over 109,000 farmers at this stage. As we move to full online application by 2018, my Department will be able to introduce further efficiencies into the processing of payments which will be of direct benefit to farmers. Payments to farmers under the Areas of Natural Constraints (ANC) Scheme also continue to issue as cases are confirmed for payment. Under the ANC Scheme, €177 million has now issued to some 82,000 farmers since payments commenced on 20th September. The Minister indicated that advance payments will continue issuing regularly until late November, with balancing payments to issue from 12 West Kerry Live

As expected, considering that this is the first year of the programme, Minister Creed announced that he has extended the deadline for BDGP farmers to complete their 2016 carbon navigators. The Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine has recently issued further reminders to all BDGP participants instructing them to complete their carbon navigator in order to facilitate both timely payment and the avoidance of penalties. The carbon navigator is an online farm management package developed by Bord Bia and Teagasc. The navigator quantifies the environmental gains that can be made on each applicant’s farm. It is a very useful and simple tool which allows an individual farmer to look at changes which can be made on their farm in areas such as the length of the grazing season or their average calving rate. Importantly, it then illustrates what that change would mean in terms of both reduced GHG emissions from the herd and the increased profitability associated with such a change. Ted Talks: Joe Joyce Ted Creedon This interview with former garda sergeant Joe Joyce was broadcast on Radio Kerry on January 2, 2002, as part of the series South by South West.

was an Able Seaman. His passport was there too and he was aged in his mid-thirties. We got on to the Chinese embassy and then on to the shipping company and they put us in touch with Lloyds of London who were the underwriters for the company. We dealt with a guy there by the name of Nick Platt. He was able to put us in the picture and they sent us a list of the entire crew and our man was named there. After the post mortem the body was buried at the State’s expense in Tralee. Now, months passed and when everyone was satisfied about his identity he was exhumed in Tralee, taken to Dublin where he was cremated and his ashes were repatriated through the good offices of Lloyds. His cash was also sent back to his family in China - it amounted to $1,900. His name was - and I’ll have to spell it out for you, H-a-n-h-u-i-x-a-o-i. It’s an extraordinary story really and shows how small the world is that a tragedy like that can happen over off Newfoundland and a body turn up nine months later on a beach in Castlegregory. Then, to compound all that to have the body found by a man home on holidays from Dead Horse in Alaska!’.

The Body On The Beach ‘It’s an extraordinary story. On the 23rd of December 1993 there was a Courtney man from Castlegregory who happened to be home on holidays from Alaska - from a place called Dead Horse in Alaska. He was walking the beach on a terrible day. There was a strong northerly wind and desperate hail showers. In any event anyway, he was walking along, just off the golf course in Castlegregory, and he discovered a body on the beach which was partially in the water. So he pulled it to safety, to some degree and then he raised the alarm. Subsequently, myself and Sergeant Mossie O’Donnell and Garda Frank Scanlon went down to recover the body. Now, as I said it was a terrible day - the worst I ever saw down there - but in any event anyway, we recovered the body. The sea was terribly rough and the tide had begun to take the body out a bit and we’d pull it up and a wave would come and drag it back again. The body was covered in a survival suit which had become full of sand and which made it very heavy and difficult to move. At that stage we didn’t know if it was a man or a woman because while the head was attached it had been cleaned of all flesh and stuff. Anyway, we got a local man who brought a tractor and we brought the body to safety and from there to Tralee where there was a post mortem. When we removed the clothing we discovered that he had documents in his pockets. We brought them back to the station here in Dingle. There were also American dollars on the body. We got a hair dryer to dry the documents and we went through them and were able to identify him. It turned out he was a Chinese national from a canton called Fugion in China. So we started our enquiries and one thing led to another and it was discovered that he was a crewman on board a Liberian registered ship, The Gold Bond Warrior. It went down off Newfoundland the previous March with the loss of the crew of 33 men. All we know about that ship is that it must have gone down very quickly but not before the captain had alerted the crew to the possibility. Not only had they their survival suits on but also their documentation on them. There was only one other body of that crew found and that was washed up in Newfoundland. There was a sergeant Luke Jackson of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police dealing with it at that end. It seems it took our Chinese man nine months to drift across the Atlantic. His documents, which were in English and Chinese showed that he

Dingle Notes.

election cannot be too far away now!!!.

Richie Williams Awards. Congratulations to the three Dingle restaurants who made the Tripadvisor Top 10 Restaurants in Ireland - idás, The Global Village and The Charthouse. The Charthouse was also awarded the Michelin Bib Gourmand Award for the 18th consecutive year and automatic inclusion in the coveted Michelin Guide for Ireland and the U.K. Castlewood House Guesthouse were also in the news when receiving a Gold Medal at the Keeling Awards in the Irish Country House and Guesthouse Experience Category. These outlets certainly set very high standards for many years now and are a credit to their proprietors their staff and to Dingle’s reputation on the world tourist stage. Not forgetting all the other local tourist outlets who I am glad to say also really do an excellent job in promoting our area at every possible opportunity. Well done also to Dara Herlihy and friends in organising a wonderful variety of entertainment during the recent Dingle Folk Fest which we hope will become a permanent fixture in the calendar of events here in Corca Dhuibhne. Town Park. During the recent Food Festival the Town Park once again proved what a great asset it is to the area with different groups using the facility for their displays and promotions. The Park is a Peoples Park and open daily all year round but the games areas are not fully utilised as in other towns so please make more use of the area ideally situated right in the centre of town. Business Chamber. The ongoing debate about the parking and general traffic problems are being followed up by the Business Chamber. It appears that the proposed Ring Road from Spa Road to Chapel Lane and Upper Goat Street is the best solution to divert congestion of traffic from the Quay area. However progress is slow in finalising plans at County Council level so we urge everybody to contact their local public representatives with a view speeding up the process as another

Plans for the Christmas celebrations in the Peninsula are being finalised at present and a Black Friday Shopping promotion on November 25th will kick off the festivities this year. As many Christmas Parties are being planned at present the Business Chamber urge all local groups however big or small to consider organising their celebrations this year in an outlet on the Peninsula and support our local restaurants/hotels/bars etc. Similarly we encourage people to start their Christmas shopping on the Peninsula and if at all possible to leave at least some of big spend in your own locality and support local employment. The Dingle Way. A recent survey highlighted the lack of local knowledge about this wonderful under-utilised resource on our doorsteps. How many of our readers could correctly answer questions by visitors looking for directions about how to find various paths on the Dingle Way?. This facility urgently needs upgrading as Walking Tourism is increasing annually and we have the absolute natural terrain on the Peninsula but to present it properly. Also to answer my question well less than 3% of local residents admitted they could accurately direct tourists if queried on the Dingle Way. Perhaps we need to organise a few weekend walks along the route to improve our local knowledge and ensure an appetite before the festivities. An Plean Teanga. Great to see that Dingle has been selected as a Service Town for the Gaeltacht under An Pleanal Teanga. An Irish Language Plan has now to be completed to promote the language in the town into the future and Aine Nic Amhlaoibh and her team in The Lab have already started work in preparing same. Aine will require the support and ideas from groups and individuals in the area as the plan needs the full support and input from all active organisations and business outlets to secure the Service Town emblem. DBR U13 1-1 Inter Kenmare (22/10/2016) The U13s were at home in their league on Saturday and it was another game of mixed fortune in each half. The U13s led 1-0 at halftime through a goal from but Inter Kenmare got back into the game in the second half and scored the equalizer with about five minutes to go and could possibly have scored the winner right at the end of the game. DBR were very dominant down the wings and Danny Kavanagh and, man of the match for a second week in a row, Oscar Donegan were getting a lot of space as attacking full-backs. The U13s should possibly have been further ahead at half-time with chances that on another day they would have scored. Strong DBR defensive play from the ever-reliable centre back pairing of Robbie Sheehy and Paddy Ryan, and goalkeeper Elijah Greenan in the 2nd half

Camphill News Betsie Konink October has come with some changes: new faces in the community of short term coworkers from Germany, Columbia and Holland and new employees. It is great to have so much extra help. We had to say goodby to Kenny Hilliard, who was with us for over 2 years on a FAS scheme and has been a great help over the years. Thank you for all the hard work! The old weavery, a temporary building which we used from the start, had to be taken down as it was completely rotten. It had been for the first 10 years of the community the only big space on the land and was used for anything from workshop, art studio, dancing, yogha, open days, parties, and table tennis. We will miss this very flexible extra space. The garden is now getting ready for the winter and in the workshops we are working hard, making jams, herb teas, weaving and knitting for the Craft Fair on the 20th of November. We will have this time some unusual jams and jellies, as this year for the first time we have a bumper harvest of quinces and medlars. Please do remember the 20th of November. Hope to see you then. 24 West Kerry Live

Kerry Social Farming Initiative Receives Major Boost Through Securing National Pilot Project The Kerry Social Farming initiative, which has been run by South Kerry Development Partnership and the Kerry Social Farming Committee over the last number of years, received a major boost in the last week with the signing of a contract to roll out a National Social Farming Pilot Project in the county. In addition to the contract to roll out the pilot project, SKDP has also been successful as part of a consortium with Leitrim Local Development Company, in securing a contract to develop National Social Farming Network. This new pilot project will see the number of host farmers throughout Kerry participating in the initiative rise to 15 from a current level of 9 with a corresponding increase in the level of participants from a current number of 26. The initiative involves people with disabilities being able to spend time with a host farmer in a safe and friendly environment both enjoying the experience of working with the animals on the farm as well as learning farm skills, life skills, connecting with the rural community and build relationships with the family farm members. The Social Farming initiative works in co-operation with many agencies in the county including KCC, disability service providers, the HSE and NEWKD amongst others. It is also supported through the Rural Social Scheme and the TÚS programme. In welcoming the awarding of the contract SKDP CEO Noel Spillane said that this pilot project will increase the opportunities for young adults with intellectual disabilities (probably the group in our society who suffer the greatest levels of social exclusion) to participate in additional social, recreational and work activities and has provided an opportunity to both participants and host farmers to learn from each other. One of the host farm participants involved, George Kelly of Hazelfort Farm in Ballymallis, said that this initiative is one of the most rewarding projects he has ever been involved with. He said that in his experience the host farmer in many ways gets nearly more enjoyment and satisfaction from having the young adults on the farm with them and seeing them develop that the participants themselves and he would strongly encourage other farmers to get involved. Any new farmers interested in finding out more about the Social Farming Project should contact Joseph McCrohan in South Kerry Development Partnership Ltd. in Cahersiveen or Dave Fitzgibbons in North, East & West Kerry Development.

Bíonn obair ar feadh na bliana ins na gáirdíní – go háirithe an gáirdín thuaidh – an ceann leis na crainn go léir. Ní cuimhin liom na gáirdíní seo a fheiscint chomh maith riamh is atá siad faoi láthair a bhuíochas do na fearaibh atá ag obair ionntu. An bhfuil crann agat sa gháirdín? Féach air agus tabhair breis aire do má’s rud é go bhfuil gá leis. Is álainn an áis an Díseart do phobal Chorca Dhuibhne. Níl aon dabht ná beadh an caighdeán chomh hard gan na daoine go léir a d’oibrigh go dian ar scéimeanna ann le blianta fada. Táim ana-bhuíoch dóibh go léir. Is iad Solas a mhaoiníonn na scéimeanna faoin Roinn Coimirce Soisialaí.

It is many years ago since community schemes were developed in the Díseart under the auspices of Comharchumann Forbartha Chorca Dhuibhne. Five people are presently working on schemes – two in the gardens and three in the main building. There is work all year round in the gardens – especially the northern garden with the trees. I have never seen these gardens looking as good as they are at present – all due to the marvellous work being done by the men who work there. Have you a tree in this garden? Check it out and give it some extra care if that is necessary. An Díseart is a marvellous place and a huge resource for the people of Corca Dhuibhne. I have no doubt that standards would not be as high were it not for the people who worked diligently on schemes down through the years. I am extremely grateful to them all. The schemes are funded by Solas under the auspices of the Department of Social Protection. - Joe Brick, Saoiste Scéimeanna Fostaíochta Pobail Comharchumann Forbartha Chorca Dhuibhne.

Brexit. Anois go bhfuil an Bheatain ag tabhairt cúl leis an AE agus go bhfiuil an púnt sterling beagnách ar chomhtharrac leis an euro beidh fadhbanna againne, ach tá margaí ar fuaid na hEorpa agus fiú sa chian Oirthear. Mar go bhfuil margadh mór ag an mBreatain anseo beidh cúrsaí eacnamaíochta idir dhá cheann na meá, ach tá an domhan mór ann agus tá dea-thairgí againne. N’fheadar fé Fhómhar na nGéanna, nó an é Fómhar an choiligh atá againn le breis agus trí seachtaine. Is minic é ráite agam go dtagann paiste deas triomaigh i mí Deire Fómhair má bhíonn an ghaoth anoir. Gan dabht bhí sí fuar, ach bhog an ghrian bhreá a theaispeáineadh a haghaidh ar feadh tamaill beagnach gach lá. Is cuimhin liom féin nuair a bhíodh na cocaí féir ag gach feirmeoir go raibh aon dealramh air. Bhíodh meithil bheaga d’fhearaibh ann go mór mhór i rith Lúnasa fé theacht an Fhómhair agus ‘sábháiltí’ an féar ar shlí amháin nó eile. Thuigeadh furmhór na bhfeirmeorí conas feár a shabhail ach bhuadh an an t-imní ar an dtuiscint go minic agus caití na cocaí i mullach a chéile, gan iad ró thirim. Dá bharr san ‘théadh’ an coca san iothlainn agus mo léir bhíodh ar an bhfeirmeoir meitheal a bhailiú nuair a thagadh an lá breá agus caití an coca san iothlainn a leagadh. Bhíodh an féar ceangailte casta ar a chéilé cosúil le droch shadhlas. Bhíodh sruth allais leo siúd a bhíodh á tharrac as a chéile ag súil go dtriomódh an ghrian é. Uaireanta fágtai an coca gan corrraí ar fad agus chaithfeadh airc ocrais a bheith ar an bhó a bhlaisfeadh é. Bhí agus tá sé níos fusa cabhair a eagrú mí Deire Fómhair mar bhíodh an staca agus an coca sa bothán nó sa gharraí. Bhíodh sásamh agus suaimhneas aigne ort nuair a bheadh an ghaoth anoir. Bheadh raistí gréine éalaithe chugat. Anois is sadhlas atá i gceist agus má ráiníonn aon trí no ceathair do laethanta gréine fómhair agat beidh sadhlas maith agat. Má bhíonn an sadhlas/féar ‘ag cuimhneamh’, ar dhul chun síl, ní beidh aon mhaith ann do aon ainmhí. I mbliana bheir an aimsir ar mhórán feirmeoir bocht agus is dóichí go mbeidh go leor sadhlais ina aoileach. Sa chás san déarfainn gur beag a bheadh thíos leis an aimsir ach an dream a bhí ag máineíl agus ag breith chucha féin agus a fhan go Deire Fómhair shabhail an Ghaoth anoir a mbarra sadhlais.

T.Y students at Meán Scoil Nua an Leith-Triúigh, Castlegregory launched a road safety campaign in their school to raise awareness of the importance of wearing high-vis jackets and cycling helmets when out and about. This campaign was done in conjunction with Business Social Enterprise module and also coincided with Road Safety Week. Their Business teacher Ms Edel O'Connor wanted to emphasise the importance of being seen on the roads as winter approaches."Young people often presume that they can be seen by oncoming traffic. Unfortuntely as most drivers are aware, we often do not see pedestrians or cyclists until it is almost too late. As the evenings are getting longer and the mornings darker school children waiting at the roadside for transport are often invisible. We want to get the message out to all school children, Primary and Secondary, as well as all road users to wear a high-vis jacket or have a torch. We also want to emphasise the importance of wearing a cycling helmet when on the roads." The TYs ran a week long awareness campaign to highlight their message. Their motto is " Be Safe, Be Seen Twenty-Sixteen"

Anso is Ansúd i gCorca Dhuibhne Ná casaigí ar Bhéarla! Tuigim Gaeilge Go minic má bhíonn beirt nó triúr ag caint le chéile as Gaeilge agus tagann duine eile ina láthair atá ag foghlaim na Gaeilge nó nach bhfuil an teanga céad faoin gcéad ar a thoil aige, ar thug tú faoi deara go bhfuil sé de nós agus de chleachtas ann casadh ar Bhéarla? Ba mhaith le daoine bheith cúirtéiseach agus níor mhaith leo bheith drochbhéasach. Ach, ar rith sé riamh leat b’fhéidir gur mhaith leis an duine sin “ar bheagán Gaeilge” go leanfadh caint an chomhluadair ar aghaidh trí mheán na Gaeilge? Léaráid: Dómhnal Ó Bric Don’t switch to English! I understand Irish! Often if there are two or three people talking together in Irish and another person comes on the scene who is learning Irish or whose grasp of the language is not one hundred per cent. Out of courtesy, the two or three speaking in Irish will switch to English. People want to be courteous and they do not want to be rude and exclude others on the basis of their apparent lack of language. This is standard practice worldwide among people with knowledge of two languages. But, did it ever occur to you that the person with “a bit of Irish” might actually want speakers in their company to continue speaking the language? It allows them to listen to the language and absorb and understand it. Think about it! This is an action point for you in your Language Plan which will be complete soon. - Muiris Ó Laoire, Institiúid Teicneolaíochta Thrá Lí, Co. Chiarraí. Flu Vaccination Question I have been told I need to get a flu vaccine. Can I get it for free?

Answer Influenza, usually known as the flu, is highly infectious and anyone can get it. However some groups are at greater risk of complications if they get the flu. This includes people over the age of 65, pregnant women and people who have a chronic medical condition.

Project4:Layout 1

Page 1

Are a carer or a healthcare worker

· Have regular contact with poultry, water fowl or pigs You can get the vaccine from your GP (family doctor) or pharmacist. Children can get the vaccine from a GP. The vaccine itself is free of charge if you are in

one of the recommended groups. However, doctors and pharmacists may charge a consultation fee when they give you the vaccine. If you have a medical card or GP visit card you can get the vaccine without being charged a consultation fee.

The flu vaccine can help protect you from getting the flu. The flu virus changes every year and this is why there is a new vaccine each year. Vaccination is strongly recommended if you: ·

Are aged 65 and over

· Have a long-term medical condition such as diabetes, heart, kidney, liver, lung or neurological disease · Have an impaired immune system due to disease or treatment ·

Have a body mass index (BMI) over 40

·

Are pregnant

What are Joint Mobilisations/ Manipulations Eddie O’ Grady Joint mobilisations are a type of ‘’hands-on’’ passive movement of a skeletal joint. They are usually aimed at a specific joint in order to achieve a therapeutic effect. The result sought is usually to free a restriction in normal joint movement, and reduce muscle tone in surrounding tissue. Manipulations are the application of a high velocity thrust during these mobilisations. High velocity, low amplitude thrust(HVLAT) is a technique whereby a rapid therapeutic force of brief duration and of a short distance, not greater than the anatomical range of movement of a joint is applied to that particular joint. You are engaging the restricted barrier of the reduced range of movement of the ‘’injured’’ joint, in order to achieve a release in restriction, and also to cause cavitation of the joint. When a HVLAT is performed , there is often a little click/crack associated with it. It is now agreed that this sound is as a result of a drop in internal joint pressure causing air within the joint to collapse on itself. There is not always a sound upon application of the HVLAT. Success of a HVLAT is primarily measured by increased joint range of movement and reduced pain after its application. HVLATs can be extremely successful for releasing locked facet joints of the neck (cervical spine), middle back(thoracic spine) and low back (lumbar spine). This conditions (locked facet joints) can be extremely painful and debilitating, often presenting with symptoms similar to a disc disorder/injury. However there are subtle differences. An experienced practitioner can use various orthopaedic tests to help differentiate between both these conditions. The above is part of the reason the myth exists that ‘’a disc can be put back in’’ . People think the noise they hear during the manipulation is the disc going back in. Sometimes, also, clients are wrongly given the impression that this is what’s occurring. It is the facet joints releasing that is making the noise. You may not have had a disc issue to begin with, but instead a locked facet joint. There is no such thing as ‘’putting a disc back in’’. As a disc issue settles down it can be useful to free up the facet joints because it may increase mobility in an area. Often facet joints and surrounding tissues have seized up to protect the body from further damage during the injury. As a result releasing the facet joint may give extra relief when a disc injury begins to settle. However great care and experience is needed in this situation(see contraindications below). Getting the diagnosis wrong and manipulating can leave a person in even more pain. With a disc injury you try and take the pressure off the disc and/or nerve it may be touching. Usually medication like a muscle relaxant along with an anti-inflammatory from your GP is the first port of call with disc injuries . Tissue work(therapeutic massage)/stretching/gentle mobilisation/strengthening can also assist recovery. Getting manipulated every day for disc disorders is more a money racket than anything else and such practitioners should be avoided as it may do more harm than good. Very forceful manipulations should also be avoided. Also, there are contraindications(times you should not use) for using manipulations (HVLATs). These contraindications should not to be taken lightly. Some of these include but are not limited to: 1. Cerebro-vascular accident 2. Spinal Cord compression 3. Cauda-equina syndrome 4. Disc herniation 5. Disc Prolapse 6. Nerve root compression 7. Fracture/stress fracture 8. Osteoporosis/osteopenia Eddie O’ Grady Bsc. (hons.) M.I.A.P.T. Horseradish – Much More Than A Saucy Root! Irene Ní Fhlannúra

It is neither horse nor radish, yet the horseradish has enjoyed its wonderful name since around the time of the Renaissance! Perhaps a type of food renaissance during the Middle Ages brought horseradish out of the medicine cabinets and onto the tables of the good folk of Europe in the 1500s. It is thought its name came from a misinterpretation of its German name “Meerrettich” (sea radish), which was incorrectly translated as Mare Radish and from there became Horseradish. The ancient Greeks and Egyptians used horseradish as a medicine for a wide range of ailments including intestinal worms, coughs, gout, scurvy, food poisoning, tuberculosis, colic and rheumatism. They also held it in high esteem as an aphrodisiac! Not sure how that worked out considering its heat and pungency but those loved-up southerners seemed to be eager to try out all sorts of food items for those intimate moments! Whether they just liked food in the bedroom or courting in the kitchen, there was some aphrodisiac on the menu everyday! All that aside, much of today’s research into the health benefits of horseradish proves the Greeks and Egyptians were on the ball with most of their claims and there is much more to horseradish than beef and oysters! Horseradish belongs to the Cruciferous family of vegetables that also include broccoli, brussles sprouts, cabbage, mustard, cauliflower and kale. This particular group of vegetables are well noted for a compound known as Glucosinulates, which have been identified as being protective against cancer growth. Horseradish has 10 times the glucosinulate content of broccoli, meaning that just a little is enough to promote the identification and destruction of malignant cells. Fortunately for us, whether in medicine or as food, a little horseradish goes a long way! The root that acts like a spice, horseradish has claimed its place alongside roast beef and oysters since the 1700s. It is said, though, that Inn keepers serving travelling horsemen used horseradish to help disguise the fact that their meat and fish were long past the best before date! 40 West Kerry Live

However, horseradish, worked both ways and promoted the secretion of mucous to coat the intestinal linings, providing protection to the weary travellers and its antibacterial properties probably protected from the rotting meats. The Old Testament cites horseradish as one of the five bitter herbs along with coriander, nettle, horehound and lettuce, traditionally served at Passover. Its role as a digestive aid is well established down through the ages, however, those with colitis, ulcers, gastritis and inflammatory bowel disease should avoid it like the plague! Horseradish is best known for its use as a remedy for urinary tract and bladder infections. It has strong diuretic properties that promotes urination, helping to reduce the risk of bacterial infections, kidney stones and fluid retention. Because of its effective diuretic qualities do not use if taking blood pressure medication or any other diuretic. More recently it has been used to clear congestion from the respiratory tract including the sinuses, for lung congestion and bronchitis. Again, it promotes mucous secretions, loosening congestion and clearing the airways of bacteria and viruses. Merely grating it will get your juices flowing by pungent aroma alone! Its use as a remedy involves grating fresh horseradish and ingesting it raw or mixed in apple cider vinegar (for preservation) and honey to sweeten the taste. Modern day medicinal recipes may add garlic or ginger for an extra punch! It is also used in a poultice, both the root or the leaves, for the treatment of lower back pain and rheumatism. Tea made from the simmered root or the leaves can be used as a gargle for strep throats, tonsillitis and toothaches. It has both an antiseptic and analgesic quality that can relieve pain and fight infection at the same time. Horseradish, with its pungent flavour and protective qualities complements the Autumn and Winter season perfectly. When colds, flus, respiratory ailments and tummy bugs are at their peak, a daily dose of horseradish might just be the “root” to a flu-free Winter! Fresh horseradish is in season now and available in most fruit and veg shops. Horseradish looks like a small parsnip except its more gnarly and rough and may have brown marks on the skin. It should feel firm to touch with no soft bruises or mould. Prepare by peeling with a veg scraper and finely grate enough for the remedy or dish at hand. Store unwrapped in the veg box of the fridge. Add to mashed potato, meat sauces, stews or sprinkle on meat, fish and vegetables. Remember, you only need a little. As a remedy: 125g grated horseradish, juice of 4 lemons, 3cm grated ginger. 2 tsp cinnamon and 4 tbsp honey – whizz in a blender with enough cooled boiled water to make a paste. Transfer to a clean jar and refrigerate. Take 1-2 tablespoons daily before meals or dilute in a little boiled water to make a gargle. That should be enough to keep the bugs away and the lovers a little closer! Irene Ní Fhlannúra, Nutritional Therapist at

Leabhar Breac Seo againn anois aistriúchán ar ‘Game of Thrones’, an chéad imleabhar sa tsraith ‘Fonn Oighir agus Tine’. ‘‘Fadó riamh, in am atá caillte i gcuimhne na seacht sinsear, trí thimpiste eisnádúrtha, cuireadh roth na séasúr dá chothrom. I dtír ina maireann an samhradh na scórtha bliain agus an geimhreadh saol iomlán duine, tá athrú ag teacht. Tá sé ag éirí fuar arís agus, sna tailte sioctha taobh ó thuaidh de Gheimhsceird, tá fórsaí osnádúrtha an oilc ag cruinniú taobh thall de mhúr cosanta an fhlaithis.

WEDNESDAY

Ag croí na coimhlinte tá Staircigh Gheimhsceirde, teaghlach atá chomh crua agus chomh righin leis an talamh as ar fáisceadh iad. Scéal é seo a thosnaíonn i dtír reoite an tuaiscirt agus a thugann i gcéin sinn go ríocht an tsamhraidh, mar a bhfuil rath agus flúirse i réim. Scéal é faoi thiarnaí is faoi bhantiarnaí, faoi amhais is faoi asarlaithe, faoi fheallmharfóirí is faoi ghaiscígh, agus gach aon duine acu ag iarraidh an bua a bhreith sa chomhrac is contúirtí dá bhfuil ann: Cluiche na Corónach..’ Leabhar Breac
