From The Archives Edited By Ted Creedon Mutiny on the High Seas From – Kerry Evening Post, 03 January 1866
Last Tuesday night the ship Scotland arrived in Dingle Bay. The vessel and her crew are in a very distressed condition. She had sailed from Calcutta in late July last year with a highly valuable cargo of jute, linseed and fruit destined for London. She had a crew of 33 as well as some passengers. During the voyage some of the crew became mutinous and took over the ship intending to return to India but were unable to navigate the vessel. The captain pleaded with them to return to duty and, as an incentive, he destroyed the log entry about the mutiny. The mutineers agreed and the ship returned to its original course. The Scotland put in to Ascension Island, off the west African coast for coal. The British authorities arrested the mutineers and they were imprisoned. The ship continued homewards with a much reduced crew, scurvy broke out and two seamen died as a result, (one of them was buried in Dingle Bay). The ship encountered very heavy weather and was driven northwards and entered Dingle Bay last Tuesday night. On Wednesday local pilot Mr. O’Flaherty managed to board her and brought her into Ventry Harbour. Most of her crew were ill and undernourished. Captain Snell sent some women and children ashore that evening. Some of the sick crew were brought ashore on Thursday but then a powerful storm blew up and there were fears the vessel would be wrecked. All of her masts were cut away and the coastguards stood by with their lifesaving rocket apparatus. When the storm eased the coastguards removed the remainder of the crew leaving the chief officer on board. It is expected the ship will be towed away for repairs soon.
Charged With Murder From – Cork Constitution, 23 May 1892 Patrick O’Sullivan, also known as ‘Darkey’, was charged at the Dingle Petty Sessions with having brought about the death of Edmond O’Flaherty, at Dingle. Local solicitor John Kennedy acted for the defendant while District-Inspector Lowndes appeared for the prosecution. Following the prosecution’s evidence, Magistrate Mr. Bull returned the accused for trial at the next Kerry Assizes. The prisoner did not make a statement.
States. Mr. Adams was committed on a criminal charge. His application for discharge was opposed on behalf of Mary Bowler and also on behalf of the Dingle mail car owners whose money (£46) he had received as their agent and had not repaid. The case had generated a great deal of interest at the time. However, the Sessions chairman decided to release the insolvent as he had already served a year and nine months in custody.

Maurice, son of Maurice Fitzgerald, deceased, and his widow Elizabeth, was buried May 12th, 1731. Robert, son of John and Margaret Fitzgerald, was buried April 2nd, 1740. Robert Fuller, of Ventry parish, was buried June 11th, 1731. Mr. Peter Ferriter, of Clonnell [Clonmel?] and Mrs. Jane Mullins of Dingle parish were married September 18th, 1713. Tallis and Frederick Eager, twins of Alexander and Tryphena of Ballinvoher parish were baptised November 23rd, 1732.
Wreck Auction in Dunquin From – Tralee Chronicle, 20 January 1854 Auction of the Wreck of the Schooner Domestic of Brideford 140 tons, coppered and copper-fastened with a cargo of brimstone [sulphur], now lying in the water at the north side of Beginis Island, west of Dingle. The subscriber has received instructions from Mr. William Beer, Master and owner of the schooner and from Mr. William Collier, Receiver of Droits of Admiralty, to sell by auction for the benefit of all concerned, on Wednesday, January 23rd at Dunquin. Auction includes the rigging, sails and any other property saved up to that day, also the hull and cargo of the said schooner as they may then lie.

[The Domestic was one of the most famous of the Blasket wrecks. The crew of six men and two boys reached the Great Blasket in their small boat and were well treated by the community. The ship was only two years old. Early reports stated she had struck on Oileáin na nÓg, close to Beginis. ‘Brideford’ may be Broadford, Isle of Skye].
Lord Mounteagle, of Brandon in Kerry, who sits in Parliament, was 61 on Tuesday. That title was first conferred in 1839 on Thomas Spring Rice, who served the State in numerous departments for most of his life. The first Lord Mounteagle’s eldest son was drowned in the Mediterranean in his father’s time and the barony devolved upon his grandson, the present peer, when he was just sixteen years of age.

The Failte Ireland Visitor Experience Development Plan for the Dingle Peninsula which was in progress for the past 3 years is a must read for all involved either directly or indirectly in the Tourism Business. The Plan highlights the huge potential for the areas Heritage, Culture and Language background while recommending better control of the peak season traffic congestion at scenic locations. They also warn that we may have lost the Personal Service / Failte touch which traditionally was a big part of the attraction for tourists to the Peninsula. I am afraid I cannot disagree with their assumptions but am sure we can easily work to correct these shortcomings if we all pull together under the leadership of the Dingle Peninsula Tourism umbrella. The Business Community in Dingle were saddened this week with the death of a very popular local man Jack Walsh M.P.S.I. who
operated the family chemist shop in Green Street for many years. Jack was an active and valued member of many sporting and other organisations in the Peninsula and will be sadly missed by not alone his family but the wider community also. During the first week in January we collected 5 full bags of rubbish along the 3 km stretch on the Long Road between Stevie's Cross and Kildrum Graveyard. Further analysis counted 185 cans( alcohol and soft drinks) 17 large wine bottles, 72 plastic bottles (all which we recycled ) leaving 3 full bags for landfill. Five full bags were also collected between Colaiste Íde Junction and Milltown Bridge and 5 more bags from Milltown Bridge to Ballinaboula Cross. We recycled as much as possible from these bags also. Quenching the Flames of Heartburn! Irene Ní Fhlannúra

Many recent studies looking at the long-term use of OTC antacids as well as over- prescribed acid suppressants such as proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) have shown a marked increase in mineral deficiencies such as calcium, zinc, magnesium and iron - and the knock-on effects of which include anaemia, osteoporosis, heart problems and cognitive health issues to name a few! Unravelling the cause of heartburn and acid reflux and treating the cause is the safest and most effective way of dealing with the discomfort. Factors that weaken the tight junction between the stomach and the oesophagus include obesity, smoking, caffeine, alcohol, bacteria imbalance and structural defects eg., hiatus hernia. It is not wise to ignore these factors in pursuit of a quick fix which may have detrimental side effects with long-term use. Interestingly, peppermint can relax this sphincter, loosening the junction, and is not recommended for those with heartburn and acid reflux. Curiously, it is a common ingredient in many OTC antacids as well as toothpaste, after dinner drinks and some herbal remedies. While peppermint is beneficial further down the digestive tract in cases of spasms and cramps, if reflux is present it is best avoided or at least, choose an enteric-formula that will not effect the upper GI tract.
Cupid is poised to shoot his arrow on Valentine’s day and fill the hearts of many with abounding love. As romantic as it sounds, heartburn, is not quite what Cupid has in mind for most of us yet many go on suffering with this condition for years on end. Almost everyone experiences a bout of heartburn or acid reflux at some stage in their lives and are grateful for the quick relief offered by some over-the-counter (OTC) indigestion remedies such as antacids. However, for many people, taking antacids and acid suppressants becomes an everyday measure to alleviate the chronic occurrence of heartburn and more worryingly, used to "prevent" heartburn or acid reflux. Heartburn occurs when gastric juices including corrosive hydrochloric acid leaks from the stomach and enters the oesophagus (the tube connecting the mouth with the stomach) and irritate the linings of the oesophagus. A tight muscular ring called the oesophageal sphincter is responsible for keeping those juices in the stomach where they belong but sometimes this junction fails causing heartburn and acid reflux. Antacids work by chemically neutralizing the acid providing a short-term solution to halt the irritation in the oesophagus. The health problems that can occur with long-term use of antacids can be quite varied and depend on the active ingredient of the chosen antacid. The most common active ingredients found in OTC antacids are calcium carbonate, magnesium, aluminum or sodium bicarbonate (bread soda). Common to all antacids are the problems associated with altered acidity in the stomach. The stomach is designed to secrete hydrochloric acid as well as other enzymes to help breakdown meat and solid food in preparation for digestion further down the intestinal tract. Constant use of antacids hinders this process making digestion difficult and often incomplete. Food that remains undigested in the stomach will be broken down eventually - though mostly by decomposition (rotting) and putrefaction. Another important role for stomach acid is to kill harmful bacteria, viruses and other micro-organisms that enter our bodies through food and water - everyday interference of acid production is weakening this line of defense allowing harmful microbes to flourish thus making us more susceptible to infections.
Losing weight, giving up some of the vices and identifying any trigger foods will go a long way to dealing with your heartburn head on. Fried food and fatty foods- pastries, chocolate and cream are common triggers. Other useful measures include chewing food until it is liquid before swallowing. Avoid overeating - eat smaller meals throughout the day and always eat at ease and relaxed. Do not lie down after eating and sleep with your upper body elevated if heartburn is a problem at night. Helpful herbs include gentian, meadowsweet leaf, marshmallow root, chamomile, licorice root and slippery elm. They help to absorb acid, soothe and repair irritated intestinal linings. Probiotics in powder or chewable form can reduce the pressure on the oesophageal sphincter caused by gas in the stomach. Activated charcoal works in a similar way and is an age-old remedy for many digestive disorders. The fact that heartburn is a common ailment does not mean that it is harmless or insignificant. Long-term masking of symptoms can often hide serious health problems. Chronic reflux is the most common symptom associated with oesophageal cancer, therefore warrants investigation. Not to frighten the bejaysus out of anyone, heartburn can usually be resolved through diet and lifestyle changes. It might take a little longer to unravel the cause but the long term benefits will always outweigh a short-term fix. Happy Valentine’s Day to all and may your hearts only burn with love and desire! The names of fields, rocks, inlets, bóthairíns, landing places, Hairdresser humps, hollows and so on contribute immensely to the rich tapestry of times past. Through a study of their etymology, some of the layers of our history can be partially unveiled. ‘Urlann’, ‘Páirc an Ráithín’ and ‘Cathair na Faithche’ reflect the presence of pre-Christian forts while ‘The Bán’ and ‘Gort na Sciath’ depict past agricultural land use. Calaithe an Bháid, Calaithe an Ghrin, Calaithe Léin and the Cé, all landing places, indicate the importance of the sea for fishing and as a means of transport for the inhabitants of Oileán tSeanaigh. Many place names would not have been preserved had they not been handed down through the years. We therefore must acknowledge the contribution of past generations in preserving this important aspect of our heritage. We would also like to thank all those who contributed to this collection: Compiled by Martin Lynch and Eoghan Ó Loingsigh for Maharees Conservation Association. This excellent production is a delight to read. Siobhain, who works as a secondary school teacher in Cork city has always had a passion for art. During the first lockdown while living in Dingle and finishing her Post Masters in Education she found herself with some time to pick up a paintbrush once again. She created an Instagram page to display her artwork which began to gather great support. During the last few months she wanted to use her art in a positive way by raising money for charity, so she created Christmas cards with 20% of all sales going to Pieta, a charity which is very close to her heart. Pieta provides essential services for people suffering with their Mental Health, a service which is essential during these challenging times. Siobhain is very grateful for all the support she received both a home and abroad to help raise the money for Pieta. In particular, ‘Bean in Dingle’ and ‘My Boy Blue’, two Dingle cafes who sold her cards.

Small Changes: Making Informed Decisions
When it comes to making informed decisions about the potential risks to our health and wellbeing, humans are strange creatures. The Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine developed against Covid-19, for example, was tested on nearly 44,000 volunteers encompassing a wide range of ages (over 18), races, ethnicities and a significant number of people with high risk chronic conditions. It has been approved by the European Medicines Board, it is advocated by the WHO and all the science and medical evidence thus far indicates that it is a low risk vaccine. When we weigh up risk we also need to take account of the alternatives and in the case of Covid-19 the alternative to a vaccine rollout is continued lockdowns impacting on our economy and mental health. For those who contract the virus there are the added prospects of serious illness, long Covid and death or at the very least unknowingly spreading the virus to the most vulnerable. On paper, this would make the decision to take the vaccine very clear cut yet despite the facts there is still significant (up to 30%) vaccine hesitancy among the wider population. One factor cited by many doubtful individuals is their distrust of large pharmaceutical corporations. This however begs the question, why aren’t we so sceptical when it comes to other large corporations such as the chemicals industry? The World Health Organisation estimates that 1.6 million lives were lost globally in 2016 due to chemical exposures which the EPA have translated as equating to 2000 deaths a year in Ireland. Chemical exposure also negatively influences quality of life (e.g. 1.9 million babies are born annually in Europe with mercury levels higher than recommended resulting in lifelong effects on learning and brain development). I would hazard a guess though that most people do not give too much thought as to what chemicals and biocides are contained in the products that we pour, spray and squirt around our homes, gardens, farms and workspaces so long as they work (even when they have large hazard labels on them and pictures of dying fish and trees). Neither do we consider the chemicals we are exposed to from everyday articles such as carpets, clothes and furnishings. I imagine that even less consider how those chemicals might be regulated or tested. A special report in 2020 on ‘Attitudes of European Citizens towards the
Environment’ identified that 88% of Irish people are concerned about the impact of chemicals on their health but this does not seem have translated to a reduction in the use of chemicals products in this country. The European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) works for the safe use of chemicals and manages the administrative and technical aspects of the REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals) regulations. REACH applies to all chemical substances not only those used in industrial processes but also those used in our day to day lives e.g. cleaning products, air fresheners, paints, dyes, plastics, pesticides, anti-bacterial sprays etc. Under these regulations the control and safety of chemicals is the responsibility of chemical manufacturers, importers and users. It is also the responsibility of industry to manage the risks chemicals may pose to human health and the environment. There are currently 21551 chemicals on the EU market now registered with REACH. In order to register a chemical or chemical product it must first be assessed for its potential effects on human health and the environment. Under REACH guidelines animal testing should be a last resort and should not be used if alternative methods are available but the total number of animals used in reach testing in 2019 was still over 2.5 million (rats, mice and fish mostly but also rabbits, guinea pigs, birds and dogs; this figure does not include animal testing used in other industries e.g. pharmaceutical). Basic toxicity testing on animals includes skin and eye irritancy tests on rabbits (even though are alternatives), tests to assess the potential effects of chemicals on reproduction, fertility and development in rats and mice and potential carcinogenicity of chemicals (rats and mice are dosed for up to 2 years and the incidence and type of tumours that develop are evaluated). Basic ecotoxicity testing establishes an LC50 (50% lethality concentration- the dose of chemical required to kill 50% of test animals/cells) for fish (trout are usually used) water fleas and algae. More extensive testing may be required based on these results, the family of chemicals the toxin under evaluation belongs to and also the intended use (i.e. pesticides must be tested on a number of non-target species and also checked to see if they tend to build up in concentration in organisms over time). All this information is compiled to make decisions on whether a substance should be authorised for use, the level of restrictions that should apply to its its usage and to provide a classification to the chemical (e.g. assign appropriate warning signs for container). Predictions (using mathemathial models) of the likely effects of chemical exposure on humans is based primarily on the results of animal and non-animal toxicity tests. Chemicals substances are subject to regular reviews but it can take years and even decades of research to establish a cause and toxic effect relationship for substances on human health and lethal effects on the environment as concrete scientific evidence is required to get them banned (lead, mercury and DDT all being prime examples). There is no perfect system to assess chemical toxicity but there are a number of issues with the current regime that need to be highlighted. Firstly, modelling the effects of a chemical on
small short lived rodents to large longer lived animals is far from ideal moreover when the rodents tested are lab reared and genetically very similar unlike humans. The effects of a chemical can have varying effects on people depending on gender, life stage (e.g. lead is most toxic to young children), pre-existing health conditions etc. In addition, the toxicity of a chemical is not always derived from the compound itself but from how the body breaks it down (as an example, chocolate is not toxic to humans but can be potentially fatal in dogs). The greatest issue, which no testing system can currently assess, is how to test mixtures of chemicals. We are all exposed to multiple chemicals at the same time. Pharmacists know how various drugs interact so that you do not take a mix of medicines that will make you ill but there is no way of testing all the combinations of the hundreds and thousands of chemicals on the market that we exposed to on a daily basis.. This is even more complex from an environmental point of view because you are dealing with so many different ecosystems (i.e. a chemical might react differently or breakdown differently in soil as opposed to water), extremes of conditions (temperature, humidity, pH etc.) and the same chemical can affect different species on different ends of the spectrum. The aim of this article is not to scaremonger. For a start, the regulatory system is not as simplified as the synopsis outlined here. Furthermore, we are exposed to chemicals- both natural and manmade, all the time through different routes (food, air, water) and they have little effect on us. The benefits of using chemical substances also have to be weighed up against the risks e.g. would you buy a carpet that has not be been treated with flame retardant or put down decking without treating it with a wood preservative? In short many chemical substances play a critical role in modern society. The aim of this article rather, is to highlight the importance of making an informed choices when it comes to environmental health. We may not have too much control over what chemicals are used in industry (although we can choose responsibly produced products, clothing etc.) but we certainly do have choices when it comes to our homes, gardens, farms and public spaces. Cheap non-toxic products like soap, lemons, vinegar, baking soda and washing soda kept homes hygienically clean before the advent of modern chemical products (it is ironic that many cleaning products on supermarket shelves advertise that they contain ingredients like vinegar and baking soda) and there is no evidence that chemical products do a better job. Open a window instead of using air fresheners or use baking soda or coffee grounds to absorb bad odours. If you like to burn candles choose eco soy candles rather than use manufactured chemical fragrances. Using tried and tested methods that worked in the past can also reduce chemical usage in gardens e.g. good soil management, crop rotation, handpicking or cutting weeds (time consuming but very effective), barriers and traps for pests etc. The message is ultimately that it is important to remember that humans are not separate from the environment and what will have an effect on the environment is likely to affect us either directly or indirectly. CLIFF COLLAPSE AT DÚNSÍON A section of the cliffside gave way onto the path leading to the beach at Dúnsíon this week. The collapse of earth and rocks was discovered on Tuesday morning by a man out walking his dog. A young seal, believed to be about two months old, was found lying on part of the rubble. Its right fore flipper was injured and may have resulted from falling rocks. Marine life specialist Kevin Flannery was contacted and after examining the creature he encouraged it to shuffle down onto the beach. "It may have been washed in on the tide or it may have been exhausted and came ashore to rest" he said. The cliff face above the collapse appeared to be unstable. The rockfall was reported to the local council offices. The sand dunes at Dúnsíon have undergone serious erosion in recent months compounded by last weekend's powerful ocean swells.

SKDP Successful In Bit To Secure Funding To Deliver Two New Loop Walks For South Kerry South Kerry Development Partnership CLG (SKDP) received very positive news on January 18th with regard to its proposals to develop two new Loop Walks in South Kerry. The Partnership secured funding under Measure 1 of the 2020 Outdoor Recreation Infrastructure Scheme (ORIS), operated under the Department of Rural & Community Development, for the development of the proposed looped walks at Castlequin, Cahersiveen and in Ballykissane in Killorglin. SKDP were approved for the full grant amount sought in each case. The proposed Castlequin Loop secured €16,659 for its 7km length and will be located ‘Over the Water’ in Castlequin, Cahersiveen. The trail head is located approximately 1km from Cahersiveen town. The views from the walk include, Dingle Bay, Blasket Islands, Valentia island, Skellig Michael. The Ballykissane Loop was awarded grant aid of €15,053 for its proposed 6.5km loop that will use both public roads and the shoreline and a flood

The trailhead will be in Killorglin town and the loop walk development is supported by The Mid Kerry Tourism Cluster (Reeks District), Killorglin Tidy Towns and the Killorglin Chamber Alliance groups. SKDP CEO Noel Spillane said that both Loop walks will be a valuable addition to the existing walking trails infrastructure in South Kerry and will support outdoor recreation whilst providing a valuable support to local tourism promotion efforts. He added that the approval of funding for the Castlequin Loop very poignant for SKDP as it was one of the last projects the late Paddy Casey (RIP) worked on before his untimely death in March 2019 and the project was very close to his heart. Noel also took the opportunity to sincerely thank to Concubhair Lyne, SKDP Rural Recreation Office and Mary Twomey Project Ecologist – SKDP Reeks EIP Project, for their assistance with the grant applications. “It is hoped to start work on the development of these walks when the current level 5 restrictions are lifted and it is safe to do so” Noel concluded.

We are so very sad to have lost our friend and colleague Laura Meiland who died peacefully in the Suimhneas Centre of Tralee hospital on Sunday 24th January. When we took over the Dingle bookshop she was already in post, and worked with us for several years. Laura and I arrived in Corca Dhuibhne at about the same time – the late 90’s, she having done an intial reconnoitre of Ireland by bike before deciding to settle in Ballyferriter. She worked in the extraordinay Teddy Bear museum on Slea Head before setting up her own restaurant Tigh an Tobair in the village. Laura was a loved and valued member of Beehive Theatre Company for sixteen years. She performed many backstage roles - running sound and lights, doing make-up and assisting at rehearsals, but it was when teaching drama to young children and directing children’s plays that she really shone. What’s Happening in the Hub? Deirdre de Bhailís Perhaps some of you have noticed ESB Networks electric cars driving around the Peninsula in recent days? Earlier this week 15 Corca Dhuibhne residents drove away in the newest model EVs (electric vehicles) and will get to trial them for the next twelve months. The models are the Hyundai Kona and the Nissan Leaf. Both have ranges in and around 400km which is a considerable improvement on older models. The trial will help us understand the impact of EV charging on the electricity network and how the use of smart EV charging technologies can minimise those impacts. Following a local campaign, 10 new EV Ambassadors from hundreds of applications were selected for the trial and the existing 5 project ambassadors also received an EV. 2 additional cars will be made available, on a managed basis, to the wider community so they can also enjoy the electric motoring experience. I have the pleasure of being one of the trial participants and am really looking forward to learning more about the EV and how the way I use it can have a real impact on energy use and emissions. have been installed in all of the trial participant homes. This means we can control the chargers from a smartphone app and schedule the times that we charge the cars. If I charge at peak times when electricity demand is high then this will put the network under pressure and the energy drawn will likely be generated from fossil fuels. However, if I schedule charging for off-peak times (such as overnight) then the energy drawn is much more likely to be from renewable sources and I can avail of the benefit of reduced night rate tariffs once I have a day/night meter. One other thing I learned on my first trip was the clever way the car captures energy from braking, decelerating and going downhill and uses it to charge up the battery. You can generate up to an extra 1km from simply coming to a stop at a roundabout - free energy for those drivers who can perfect their driving habits! I’m sure we’ll hear lots more tips and insights from all of the other participants as we go through this trial and we’re looking forward to sharing them with everyone. We’re delighted to be hosting a 12-week online film workshop with fab facilitator Ciara Barret - Irish Language Cinema: Culture & Practice. This online course provides an introduction to Irish-language film studies and filmmaking for adults interested in exploring how the Irish language can be utilized via screen media towards a broadening of Irish cultural output – particularly from rural and Gaeltacht areas. Workshops will run bi-weekly on Mondays and Thursdays from 3-6pm, starting on Thursday, 11th February and ending on Thursday, 6th May. Cost is €150 for the full course. This workshop is
partially funded by Ealaín na Gaeltachta, which has generously subsidized a number of spaces on the course. OBITUARY Evelyn Bambury, nee Coakley, Bridge Street, Dingle and Tonakilla, Camp passed to her eternal reward on Thursday last at Dingle Community Hospital. Born and raised on the family farm in Tonakilla, Camp, Evelyn was a proud Camp woman all of her life.She was very athletic, playing Camogie with Kerry and with the Camp Ladies Team in her youth. A member of the Camp Drama Society she took part in several productions and was by all accounts a real natural on stage. Evelyn lived to a great old age and the care given to her by her family in her final years was exemplary. Evelyn was a lovely lady and is always remembered with great fondness in Camp. Her husband John and son Kieran predeceased her as did her brothers, Timmy and (Sonny) Alexander. Sadly missed by her children Marion, Jimmy, Celine, Colm, Gerard and David, her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, extended family and many friends. She was a retired Sister in nursing and Management in Nursing in England and worked until the late 1980's. She retired home to Gortin 40 years ago. The death of Jackie Flynn, Keelballylahive occurred on Friday last. Jackie was a born gentleman, highly respected and held in high esteem by everybody in his neighbourhood and in the farming community in which he lived. A native of Kilshannig, Jackie and Chrissey Scanlon from the Maharabeg married in 1955 and began farming in Keelballylahive where they raised their children and lived happy and contented lives.

Married to Chrissey for 66 years, Fr. Mulvihill in a beautifully delivered homily at his funeral mass on Monday, told of Jackies final wish, " I'll hold out until Friday " and so he did and Jackie passed away peacefully on Friday 29th January, the 66th. anniversary of his marraige to his beloved Chrissey.

The funeral Mass was streamed live all over the world and Fr. Mulvihill reached out to all listening, watching and present in the ceremony at St. Marys Church and in particular, Jackies family in far off lands. Jackie was laid to rest in Killiney graveyard. Rest In Peace. Sadly missed by his heartbroken wife Chrissey, his sons, Jerry and John, his daughters Mary Joe and Ann , brother Jerry, sisters-in-law Cauty, and Margaret, sons-in-law, daughters-in-law, nieces, nephews, grand-children, great-grandchildren relatives and friends. Sympathy is extended to all. The death of (Cath) Catherine Potter, (nee O’Dowd), Hurlers Cross, Co. Clare and formerly of Glenlough, Camp, Co. Kerry occurred 24th January 2021. Cath was a lovely person and is fondly remembered by all her neighbours and friends here where she was born and raised and went to school. Predeceased by her husband Bob and daughter Lara and brothers Gerry and Matthew. Sadly missed by her daughter Siobhan, beloved grandmother and best friend to Morrigan and great grandmother to Joshua, sister to Una and Maura, also brothers and sisters in law, extended family, relatives, neighbours and friends. In not supporting them, we are putting lives at risk. With these unprecedented times, our tourism community are trying to cope with the uncertainty of the season ahead – our businesses closed, the challenges of planning ahead for the 2021 season, continuing to adapt our businesses for what lies ahead and particularly, supporting our staff, and sourcing staff for the coming year once the safety of the “Green light” is given. With Government recognising the devastation to tourism business owners and their teams, Ms. Catherine Martin, Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, An tAire Turasóireachta, Cultúir, Ealaíon, Gaeltachta, Spóirt agus Meán, secured new funding supports of €55 million for the Tourism Business Continuity Scheme. Through Fáilte Ireland’s virtual event this week ‘Survive to Thrive’, the following points are immediately relevant to West and Mid-Kerry: 1. Fáilte Ireland are launching the first phase of the €55million Tourism Business Continuity Scheme on February 11th (with an industry webinar on February 9th to present
the applications to eligible tourism business). This will provide those tourism businesses who have not received support through the Covid Restrictions Support Scheme (CRSS) or previous Fáilte Ireland business continuity schemes, with direct financial assistance. Eligible businesses include Outdoor Activity providers (including Bike Tours, Surf Schools, Kayaking Tours, Angling, Boat Tours, Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tours / Walking Tours, Outdoor Attractions, Equestrian) and Tourism Golf Courses. Also, Visitor Attractions not eligible for CRSS (e.g. charity / not for profit status or primarily outdoor attractions); Caravan and Camping; and Cruise Hire Companies. 2. The recovery of our industry will be medium to long term. While no dates were given for when our businesses will reopen, the latter half of the year was mentioned several times and so through ‘tourism talk’ re-opening may not take place until late May or early June (Vaccine roll-out and Covid-19 numbers will determine this). We will re-open to the domestic market again, when it is safe to do so, where pent-up demand will happen as we experienced in 2020 but the international market is not set for the beginning of recovery until late 2021. 3. Festivals and Events: The first half of the year will be based on virtual festivals and no mass gatherings for some time to come; Quarter 3 events will be reviewed in mid-March and Quarter 4 events will be reviewed in late April. Fáilte Ireland has set out a number of other key initiatives for 2021: 1. Heavyweight investment in Domestic Marketing to drive domestic tourism once the country re-opens including county-specific campaigns and a focus on Dublin. 2. Employee, business and sector supports on areas such as strategy and leadership, finance and cost efficiency, food and beverage innovation, maximising revenue and service excellence to drive performance and
help businesses navigate the challenges they are facing, as well as wellbeing services to support employers and employees at this difficult time. 3. The enhancement of urban areas through 31 Destination Town2 projects across the country and two new funding schemes - the Outdoor Dining Grant Scheme which will improve the quality of outdoor dining spaces and offer reassurance around safety and comfort, and the Urban Animation Grant Scheme to animate our cities and towns with innovative lighting and art installations. 4. Preparing for the return of tourism by working with industry to build improved websites and online booking capability through a new digital transformation programme and continuing to keep Ireland front of mind for overseas buyers through a range of virtual sales events, including Meitheal, one of Ireland’s largest travel trade shows.” With the February stretch in our days, for our own wellness and mental wellbeing, let’s get outdoors, take in the fresh and pure Atlantic sea air and continue to enjoy our wonderful landscape……. the rejuvenation and sense of renewal that so many people experience when they come here, is for us to embrace now as we recover from the turmoil of 2020 and look with hope to the not-too-distant future, with the successful roll-out of the vaccination programme. Message from Fr Michael PP Dingle. Over the past year our lives have changed immeasurably. Covid 19 have had an effect on all aspects of our life. While there is light at the end of the tunnel in the form of vaccines, we still have a journey to go. Some people are finding this lockdown more difficult that previous ones. As humans we have three basic needs, food, shelter and something to look forward to. As people of hope we trust in our leaders in healthcare and government that every effort is being made to distribute the vaccine. We also turn to our faith for hope and reassurance. We turn to God who holds us in the palm of his hand. Our hope is that by late summer life will be on its way back to what we considered normal. In the meantime it is important to heed advice from health authorities. Stay safe and stay at home when possible. We continue to pray for those whose lives and livelihoods continue to be affected by the Coronavirus. We remember those who have died, those who suffer, those who mourn, those who help and those who are working on the manufacture and distribution of a vaccine. We think of those who work in our local hospital. They are the hearts and hands that care for, and are there for, our loved ones in their need. Mass is celebrated each weekday at 10.00am, each Saturday at 6.15pm and at 11.30am on Sundays. These Masses are celebrated behind closed doors and can be viewed on Webcam. On Monday Feb 1st Des McQuaid the Chairperson of our Parish Pastoral Council presented a cheque to the value of €1,755 to Marian O’Sullivan of West Kerry Care of the Aged Committee. Fish Soup with Potatoes and Haddock Mark Murphy: Dingle Cookery School
1 bay leaf small bunch of thyme leaves 2 carrots, diced 2-3 potatoes, peeled and cut into large dice 1 litre of fish stock pinch of saffron 500g haddock, skin removed and cut into chunks 200g mussels, cleaned parsley, chopped salt and pepper
Normally when we think of a fish soup we usually think of a delicious creamy chowder, but there is something special about a simple fish soup which is light yet full of flavour. Be in no hurry to cook this dish, it will probably only take around 30 minutes to cook it but when it is slowed down, the flavour from the vegetables cooked in butter and with the herbs will give it such a delicious base. The slow steady simmer when cooking the fish will leave it juicy, soft and tender. If you have to cook this beforehand to help save time, cook the dish until the potatoes are nearly cooked and then turn it off and then when you are ready to serve it warm it up and let the fish cook before serving. Ingredients knob of butter 1 small onion, diced 1 leek, washed and white part cut into small pieces, 1 stick of celery, sliced finely
Method Put a pot on over low to medium heat. Add the butter and the onions, leeks, bay leaf, thyme and a pinch of salt. Cook this slowly for at least 10 minutes. Allow everything to soften and the flavour of the herbs to develop. Add the carrots and cook for another few minutes. Add the potatoes then add the stock and saffron. Turn up the heat to bring it to a steady simmer. Cook this for about 10 minutes and check the potatoes, at this stage they should be almost cooked. Add the fish and mussels. Put a lid over the pot and heat the heat low. A slow steady simmer will give the best result to poach the fish and cook the mussels. Check after 5 minutes, and cook for another 2-3 minutes if needed. All the mussels should be open and the fish should be cooked but not falling apart (use a small knife to check one of the pieces of fish). Taste and adjust the seasoning if needed. Remove the bay leaf. Add the chopped parsley and serve immediately. Bain Taitneamh As West Kerry Live 27
