From The Archives Edited By Ted Creedon French lugger wrecked From – Kerry Examiner, 15 January 1849 A French lugger named La Jeune Aimie sheltered in Dingle Bay during last week’s storm. She lay at anchor there and refused assistance to enter either Kells Bay or Dingle Harbour. This led the authorities to suspect that she was a smuggler. Eventually, the vessel moved closer to Kells Bay but was driven from her moorings there and stranded at Rossbeigh where she became a total wreck. It is reported that her cargo was lost before she stranded.
Burnham robbery 1743 From – Kerry Evening Post, 16 September 1908 This article is taken from the deposition of Thomas Anderson on 14 June, 1743. He stated that during the night of the 10th of June he and James Connor from Dingle travelled to Burnham where Connor broke into one of William Mullins’s out offices. From there he took several items of lace, a saddle cloth and an item of silver which he conveyed to Dan Egan’s house in Dingle. According to Anderson, Conner sold the silver item for £15 at the home of William Goggin.
Castlegregory Petty Sessions From – Kerry Evening Post, 16 November 1907 The Castlegregory Petty Sessions were held before the presiding Resident Magistrate Mr. E. Wynne and Mr. Timothy O’Flaherty. Constable O’Neill of Camp summoned Michael Baker for being drunk and disorderly. Baker was fined half a crown and costs of one shilling and sixpence. John Baker was summoned by the same constable for a similar offence. However, he was fined five shillings and costs as above. Constable O’Neill also summoned John Griffin for being drunk and disorderly at Camp on 19th October. His fine was ten shillings and sixpence plus costs as above. Catherine Sullivan was summoned by Constable McKenna for being drunk and disorderly at Castlegregory on Sunday 20th October. She was fined half a crown and costs. Edward Moore was summoned by Sergeant Clancy for being drunk and disorderly at Castlegregory on 30th September. Moore was fined ten shillings and six pence plus costs. Sergeant Clancy also summoned Catherine Griffin for working a donkey that was suffering from sores and Timothy Kane was summoned for a similar offence. Both were fined two shillings and sixpence and costs. The chairman stated the public should be aware that cruelty to animals could result in a fine of £5.
Darcy From Dingle From – Kerry Evening Post, 1 February 1893 Mr. William Darcy, a native of Dingle, told an amusing story at a recent concert in the Catholic Club, Dublin. Renowned as an accomplished whistler, the audience insisted he entertain them with a popular tune and were delighted with his performance.
Damage To Dingle Pier From – Kerry Evening Post, 12 January 1887 During the recent intense storm in West Kerry the steamship Fastnet caused extensive damage to the pier where she was tied up. The cost of repairs is estimated at more than £200. The vessel belongs to the Clyde Company and the Harbour Commissioners met this week to discuss the issue of liability for the repairs. Some contended that the vessel should have been moved from the pier and moored in the harbour during the storm. Others argued that the ship could have been driven on shore while attempting to leave. At length, the Commissioners agreed to seek legal direction on the matter.
Mr. Smith O’Brien visits Dingle From – Kerry Evening Post, 18 October 1845 Mr. Smith O’Brien paid a visit to Dingle and the west last Wednesday. His supporters, of questionable character and of the lower classes, both men and women, went around the town and threatened house owners to put candles in their windows, to celebrate his visit, or have their windows smashed. Mr. O’Brien delivered what can only be described as an extremely tiresome speech to a gathering of poor inhabitants outside his hotel. People were disappointed with his appearance and instead of a dashing well-dressed politician he gave the impression of being an ordinary country gentleman. [The paper failed to mention that William Smith O’Brien was a staunch Nationalist Member of Parliament, a Protestant, a supporter of the Irish Language and one of the leaders of the Young Ireland movement. Following the Young Irelander Rebellion in 1848 he was tried for sedition and given the death penalty. However, that was commuted and he was deported to Van Dieman’s Land, or Tasmania, for five years].
Loans To Brandon Fishermen From – Kerry Evening Post, 20 December 1893 During a recent storm four fishing vessels owned by Brandon fishermen were destroyed along with all their fishing gear. The Member of Parliament for West Kerry, Sir Thomas Esmonde, asked the Chief Secretary in the House of Commons this week if the boats were constructed through grant aid from the Irish Fisheries Board would he order the Fisheries Board to suspend such loans. Alternatively, would he support the proposal of giving a free grant to the poverty stricken fishermen allowing them to return to their occupations in the New Year. The Chief Secretary assured the honourable gentleman that his concerns would be discussed by the Congested Districts Board members at their next meeting.

Where It All Began. Eleven year-old Jack Kennedy rode Pair of Jacks to victory in the 12.2 hand Gary Boyle event for young jockeys at Dingle Races (above) in August 2010. Few if any of those watching the race could have foreseen that this young local boy would be a future Cheltenham Gold Cup Champion. Four years later, aged 15, he won the Dingle Derby. The dream of competing at Cheltenham began to form in Jack’s head from an early age and a few weeks before his 18th birthday, in 2017, he rode his first win at the festival. The media, when writing about Jack’s success and potential began to use such words as ‘sensation’ and ‘brilliant’. But the road to achieving that dream wasn’t all easy riding.
Jack suffered his share of occupational hazards and disappointments resulting from falls, fractures and breaks but through it all he kept the dream alive and realised it on Minella Indo last month. Now, at 21, he’s being hailed as the youngest jockey to win the Gold Cup in the modern era. (The ‘modern era’ usually refers to the post Second World War period from 1946). The Aintree Grand National will be held on Saturday week, 10 April. Jack rode Bless the Wings to finish third in the 2018 event. Will he have another reason to celebrate when he celebrates his 22nd birthday on 22 April? The young man has given a welcome, morale-boosting, shot in the arm to the West Kerry community while the community awaits a different shot in arm during these troublesome times. - Ted Creedon

Small Changes: THE CLIMATE ACTION BILL
Last week the government published The Climate Action and Low Carbon Development (Amendment) Bill 2021. The objectives and targets outlined in this bill will affect how every section of our economy operates and it will impact on every person in this country to some degree or another. It is therefore, very important to have an understanding of what this bill entails. WHAT IS THE CLIMATE ACTION BILL? The Climate Action Bill provides the legal framework required to significantly reduce Ireland’s greenhouse gas emissions. The bill commits the Irish state to ‘pursue and achieve by no later than 2050, the transition to a climate resilient, biodiversity rich, environmentally sustainable and climate neutral economy’. The inclusion of the word ‘achieve’ in the revised bill means that the state is now legally obliged to secure carbon neutrality (carbon emissions must be balanced by carbon removal) by 2050. An interim target of a 51% reduction in emissions (using 2018 emissions as a baseline) by 2030 is also enshrined in law. The bill states that these goals will be achieved through five-yearly carbon budgets. WHAT IS A CARBON BUDGET? In the same way that the fiscal budget sets out how much money the government has to spend, a carbon budget will set a limit on the total amount of all greenhouse gases ( e.g. carbon dioxide, methane, nitrous oxide) that can be emitted in the state over 5 year periods. Each sector of the economy (i.e. energy, transport, agriculture, built environment, industry) will be set a maximum limit for emissions once the overall budget is adopted. The relevant government departments for these sectors will be responsible for achieving these legally binding targets and will have to account to the Oireachtas Climate Committee for their performance each year (the Oireachtas Climate Committee is to get to more powers of scrutiny under the Climate Bill). If a Department exceeds their carbon budget, they will have to pay for it (e.g. make cuts to their fiscal budgets to save money to buy carbon credits or put major projects on hold). WHO DECIDES ON THE CARBON BUDGET? Carbon budgets will be drawn up by the Climate Change Advisory Council (CCAC). The budgets will be proposed to the Minister for Climate Action who in turn will present them to the cabinet for approval. The CCAC must provide regular reports and an annual review on the progress of the state in complying with its 6 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
obligations. The CCAC is an independent advisory body which was set up in 2016. The committee is to be expanded from 11 members to 14 members under the Climate Change Bill. Current members include former researchers from the ESRI, the director general of the EPA, professors of economics from a number of universities, the director of Teagasc and the chair of the sustainable energy council. The CCAC must have regard for climate justice and a ‘just transition’ when carrying out its functions. This basically means ensuring that people and the environment are treated fairly when action is being taken. This will be a very difficult task as many will be disadvantaged by the transition to a carbon neutral society even though it should lead to greater sustainability. WHAT IS A CLIMATE ACTION PLAN? The Climate Action Plan is a document in which the government sets out the actions and measures that each sector needs to take to ensure they meet the states’ climate commitments (now enshrined in law by the Climate Action Bill) and also comply with EU and international climate targets. The national plan, which will be updated annually to account for future policies, changing annual targets, new technologies and updated scientific information, also includes actions to ensure citizens become engaged and take climate action. The 2019 Climate Action Plan set out 183 actions and 619 individual measures aimed at tackling climate change. Examples of these actions include plans to retrofit 500 000 homes and improve their efficiency to Ber-2 rating; increase carbon taxes to encourage behavioural change; 50% reduction in food waste by 2030; eliminate single use plastics; plant an average of 8000 hectares of forest a year; increase the number of electric vehicles in the national fleet to 1 million and build the charging network required for this. Critics of this plan pointed out that there was very little detail in how these plans would be achieved in reality, especially given the short time frames e.g. how do you retrofit 500 000 homes by 2030 when the skilled workforce required to do so does not yet exist in sufficient numbers? Given that the Climate Bill now legally requires the state to achieve emission targets, the 2021 Climate Action Plan and subsequent plans will need to have a lot more detail. Revised plans will also need to account for biodiversity, something that received scant mention in the 2019 Climate Action Plan, as achieving ‘a biodiversity rich’ environment is also a legally binding requirement stated in the revised Climate Bill. The Climate Action Bill has also introduced a requirement that every county council/local authority must prepare a Climate Action Plan on how their area will reach emission reduction targets (counties with high intensity farming or industry will have very different plans to low intensity counties). These will need to be updated every 5 years and need to align with their Local Development Plan. WHAT IS THE CLIMATE CONVERSATION & WHY SHOULD YOU CONTRIBUTE TO IT? Delivering its judgement on Climate Case Ireland (a legal action taken by Friends of the
Earth against the Irish government for failing to take adequate action on climate change), the Supreme Court placed strong emphasis on the need for public participation and transparency in the development of future climate policy. As a result the revised Climate Action Bill includes that ‘the voices of ordinary people must be at the centre of climate action’. While targets have been set in the Climate Action Bill, the best way to meet these targets through measures to be outlined in Climate Action Plans is still up for discussion. A survey/questionnaire to gather views of all citizens on climate change and assess their willingness to take action has been open since March 23rd at https://climateconversations.citizenspace.com/ decc/climateactionplan2021/consultation/. You certainly don’t need to be an expert to take part in this survey. If you do wish to add further opinions, wish to offer insights from a community group perspective or would like to provide your answers in Irish you can email climateconversation@decc.gov.ie. In a significant departure from normal government consultations, the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications is also seeking expert evidence on the decarbonisation of all sectors of the economy and on subjects ranging from carbon pricing to the circular economy. A consultation questionnaire has also been set up for this online and/or submissions can be emailed to callforevidence@decc.gov.ie. Submissions to the climate conversation will close on May 18th. Further information can be found on www.gov. ie. Tackling the climate crisis is very necessary and while there will be many positives such as new employment opportunities, more efficient use of resources and less pollution, there will be many challenges to overcome in the transition to carbon neutrality. There will, for example, be increased costs for all individuals and businesses through carbon taxes and initial investments in technologies to comply with policies. It is likely that our agriculture, energy and transport systems in particular will be transformed and many of the changes required will need to take place in a very short timeframe to achieve the 2030 target of 51% reduction in emissions. Therefore, the greater the level of engagement with the consultation process to ensure the burden of change is fairly distributed, the better. WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? Once the Climate Action Bill is approved by the Oireachtas the carbon budget details, which will set a limit on emissions from 2021-2025, will be announced. There will be an overall limit set for the whole economy and then this will then be broken down by sector and weighted according to the emissions of that sector. Following the consultation process with experts and the public (climate conversation) a new Climate Action Plan will be drawn up and launched in the summer with the renewed National Development Plan. Targets will start being counted for the first 5 year period from 2021.

Logainmneacha na Machairí: The traditional lesser-known place names of a locality are rooted in its topography and cultural history and reflect the close relationship between a community and its immediate environment. The names of fields, rocks, inlets, bóthairíns, landing places, humps, hollows and so on contribute immensely to the rich tapestry of times past. Through a study of their etymology, some of the layers of our history can be partially unveiled. ‘Urlann’, ‘Páirc an Ráithín’ and ‘Cathair na Faithche’ reflect the presence of pre-Christian forts while ‘The Bán’ and ‘Gort na Sciath’ depict past agricultural land use. Calaithe an Bháid, Calaithe an Ghrin, Calaithe Léin and the Cé, all landing places, indicate the importance of the sea for fishing and as a means of transport for the inhabitants of Oileán tSeanaigh. Many place names would not have been preserved had they not been handed down through the years. We therefore must acknowledge the contribution of past generations in preserving this important aspect of our heritage. We would also like to thank all those who contributed to this collection: Compiled by Martin Lynch and Eoghan Ó Loingsigh for Maharees Conservation Association. This excellent production is a delight to read. Very well written and illustrated to the highest standards this will bring back long lost memories of place names steeped in history and create a sense of pride to all who wish to have a connection to The Maharees. Castlegregory Community Where do you see yourself in 2040? What about your family? Your community? Your environment? In a rapidly changing world, it can be hard to imagine what the future might bring. You can choose to participate in shaping and building that future or to be a bystander as the future happens to you. One thing is certain, having an idea of where you want to go makes reaching your destination far more achievable! As a small rural, coastal community, the parish of Castlegregory (which includes the townlands of Maharees, Stradbally, Castlegregory and Aughacashla and their environs) enjoys many wonderful attributes but also faces many unique challenges. A group of local residents are working to encourage the entire community to come together to create a vision of where they would like to be as a community in 20 years time and what they need to do to ensure the area and the people who live in, and love it, not only survive but thrive. This process is building on several strands of preceding work. As with any community, Castlegregory has numerous clubs, groups and initiatives that provide vital services both to the people who live there all year round and to the large number of summer visitors to the area, including the local GAA club, local church groups, the soccer club, the golf course, Care of the Aged, Castlegregory and Stradbally Community Councils, Tidy Towns, the village market, the Brandon Bay Run, the Maharees regatta and many others. There are several existing initiatives that aim to protect and enhance the area for future generations, including the trojan work of the Maharees Conservation Association, which was created to address coastal erosion in the Maharees and the ongoing work led by Castlegregory Community Council on creating a new nature park in Castlegregory village. These are just a sample of the local ideas that are being pursued on a projectby-project basis. In November 2019 and February 2020, NEWKD held a series of community planning and consultation meetings across the Dingle peninsula. The workshops attracted a large number of participants with a wide range of interests and backgrounds, but all sharing an interest in the future of the local community. Unfortunately with the onset of the global pandemic, it seemed that local opportunities for action on the ideas that were raised during the group get-togethers would be hindered. In late 2020, Maharees Conservation Association initiated an online consultation process around the idea of a blueway, or a network of recreational trails and sites, based on and closely linked with the water, which would encompass activities in Maharees, Castlegregory, Aughacashla and Stradbally. Through the course of the NEWKD workshops and this consultation process it became obvious that there was appetite among the respondents for a much broader and deeper engagement on proposals that could enhance life in the community and the visitor experience. The question was also raised of who gives the mandate to pursue any given project in the community. To address these issues, those involved are proposing a collective authoring of a shared community vision and the strategy to deliver it. They are hoping to engage as many people as possible with an interest in the area in defining a vision which builds on the unique inheritance of heritage and place for their community now and for the future, as well as defining the strategies needed to implement that vision, with the intention that the community mandate for ensuing projects will evolve through the process. They are hoping to come up with a shared set of questions and answers on how to make their place more livable, sustainable, vibrant, connected, caring and resilient. First the community will come up with a comprehensive overview of existing assets, gaps, threats and opportunities. From there, they hope to generate ideas on ways to strengthen and enhance their assets and how they can overcome any gaps, challenges and barriers with actions across short, medium and long-term to be prioritised by community members. The process will be holistic and cyclical, allowing for input, feedback and adjustment at each stage, and able to be replicated and extended as required. Some of the areas already proposed for immediate action include traffic management, coastal erosion and flood risk mitigation, and biodiversity awareness. In the coming months a series of measures will be rolled out both online and offline to reach the greatest number of people possible. Any and all with an interest in the future of the area are welcome and encouraged to join the conversations. If you’d like to get involved and be kept up to date, please email castlegregory2040@gmail.com.

Egg-ceedingly Good News about Eggs! Irene Ní Fhlannúra
health and welfare of commercial chickens and hens. Organic hens and those reared freely on the farm down the road, whose diet is a natural fare of untainted seeds and insects produce much healthier eggs. The nutrition of the egg is only as good as the hen’s diet and wellbeing. Since these birds are free from crowded conditions, antibiotic use is usually unnecessary and pesticides are rarely needed. When free to peck their own food, chickens and hens favour insects, grains and seeds from their native surroundings, which ultimately makes for a happier hen and a healthier egg! Perhaps this is the real reason chickens crossed the road in the first place! The best method of storing eggs is point down and in the carton, which protects the porous shell from light and odours. They are best kept cool but not chilled. In warmer weather, eggs can be stored in the fridge. Before cooking, particularly when baking, take them out of the fridge for at least 30mins before use. Poaching and boiling, either hard or soft, are the best ways to enjoy eggs because it heats the egg at lower temperatures. High temperatures reached during frying alter the heat-sensitive structures in the egg, making them less beneficial to our health. As does many of the oils in which they are fried.
Since the domestication of the chicken more than 4,000 years ago, people in almost every culture have been enjoying and nourishing themselves with the egg. Easter occurs in Springtime, a period of new life and renewed growth thus it is not surprising that the egg - from which life begins - is somewhat of a celebrity in both religious and culinary history. Hens begin laying more eggs during the brighter, warmer days of Spring validating the great symbolism of the egg in so many traditions. From ancient pagan history to modern day Christianity and in every known culture - the egg represents fertility, birth and new life. Not surprisingly, the egg has the nutritional profile to support its lofty status. Eggs are an egg-cellent source of vitamin K and B vitamins including thiamin (B1), folate, choline, biotin and B12. Rich also in selenium, vitamin D and protein.
Good quality eggs are economical, versatile and healthy. They are Nature's answer to fast food! A little thought into the source, storage and preparation of eggs will link up their health benefits with the symbolism of Mother Nature's great gift - and that is worth celebrating at Easter and indeed, the brighter months ahead!
Not so long ago eggs were struck off the menu by those concerned with rising cholesterol levels. At the time of their ousting, public health experts and the medical profession believed that dietary cholesterol was an important contributory factor in the rising incidences of cardiovascular disease. However, as more research unfolds, instead of contributing to heart disease, the total nutritional content of whole eggs actually lower the risk. The most up-to-date research not only reverses the cholesterol myth but also highlights that saturated animal fat (low in eggs) in the diet, and not dietary cholesterol, has a much greater impact on blood cholesterol levels.
Eat Right, not Less, for a Happy Belly!
Eggs contain many heart-friendly nutrients. Most notably betaine and choline. Betaine can reduce levels of homocysteine, an amino acid derived from animal protein. Homocysteine can damage the blood vessel walls and contribute to clot formation increasing the risk for heart disease, stroke and Alzheimer's disease. Homocysteine tends to be higher in people who eat a lot of animal protein and consume few leafy vegetables, beans or fruit - which provide folic acid and B vitamins that can help the body of rid itself of homocysteine. Choline a key nutrient for cell membranes, neurotransmitters and brain function. Eating eggs has been associated with reduced risk of cognitive decline in the elderly. Choline is also involved in the metabolism of homocysteine as are the B vitamins - making the egg a superfood for the both the heart and the brain. With all this said, it does not mean you can eat eggs until they come out your ears! While there is no official upper limit on egg consumption, the scientists at Harvard Medical School recommend no more that seven eggs a week for adults. It is important to choose eggs that are local, fresh and preferably organic or chemical-free. Commercially raised chicks are fed cheap, processed grains, GM maize or GM soy. It literally costs chickenfeed to feed a chicken for mass production their eggs. Pesticides and antibiotics are routinely given to these birds to deal with the risks of their unnatural environment. The chickens convert much of the starch from this chicken feed into saturated fat. The ingested pesticide and antibiotic residues are stored in that fat, much of which ends up in the yolk of the egg. In 2012 EU laws banned the use of traditional battery cages in commercial egg production, but even without the cages conditions remain dire when it comes to the diet, 10 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

‘CLG Daingean Uí Chúis - 2021 Strategic Review Update’
On the facilities front, a new community centric clubhouse and improved floodlighting featured prominently in the replies. The clubhouse in particular came in for a lot of attention in the survey! On the Community front, respondents were full of praise for the role the club played in the COVID response but some really good future suggestions came in such as active involvement in Dingle Tidy Towns, Local Charity / CommunityCause Partnerships, Family Fun Days / Community Days, etc.

NEXT STEPS: Strategic Review Focus Groups are now in the process of being established (leaders and teams currently being appointed) that align to the key pillars in our strategic plan (Infrastructure & Facilities, Coaching / Games Development, Community Involvement & Engagement, Communications / PR & Culture, Finance / Fundraising, Club's Organisational Structure, Management & Governance and Health & Wellbeing). The Survey feedback will be a key input into that process. Other GAA clubs, Kerry Co Board officers, local & national expertise, etc. will also be consulted for input where appropriate. The focus groups will then be responsible for making the final informed recommendations to the Strategic Review Steering Committee in advance of the 5 Year Development Plan being drafted. We will keep you updated on progress.

Gan amhras tabharfaidh d’aiseolas agus moltaí luachmhara tuiscint faoi leith dúinn conas gur féidir le CLG Daingean Uí Chúis forbairt a dhéanamh sna cúig bliana romhainn. A massive thank you to everyone who completed our recent strategic review survey. This was a very important first step in our club embarking on the development of a five-year Strategic Plan. Your valued feedback and suggestions will dictate how CLG Daingean Uí Chúis will evolve over the next five years. RESPONSES / COMPETITION WINNER: 156 of you had your say (which way exceeded our expectations). Congratulations to Brian O’Connell, Spa Road who was the lucky winner of the Year’s Subscription to Dingle Lotto (play at www.dinglegaa.ie/lotto). We had really strong engagement across all key stakeholder groups, across all age groups and had a healthy 60% male/40% female gender mix. Aside from the volume and diversity of the replies we are really appreciative of the time and effort people put into their responses – the quality of the feedback and suggestions was terrific and will be invaluable to the club as we move forward – míle buíochas. It was also lovely to see so many responses coming in from outside of the Dingle Peninsula with feedback not only coming in from all parts of Ireland but from further afield destinations such as Australia, America, Dubai, UK, etc.
OVERALL SENTIMENT: Overall, the survey showed that there is a really strong sentiment towards the club – a strong appreciation for all the great volunteer work undertaken by so many people. As one respondent remarked “It's natural to look at how we can improve but what we have would be the envy of most clubs in the country”. The survey reaffirms that the 5 year development plan needs to focus on improvements / refinements (building upon a really solid base). TOP SATISFACTION AREAS: The areas that came back with the highest satisfaction scores in the survey were ‘Standard of Coaching / Games @ Juvenile Level’ followed by ‘Standard of Coaching / Games @ Adult Level’. In the Juvenile area, there was a massively positive response to the pre-xmas Sunday morning academy sessions in particular (with all underage teams training on the same morning). Parents felt it brought a real togetherness & community spirit and the children of course loved having the senior players involved. IMPROVEMENT AREAS: On the flip side, the areas that came back with most scope for improvement were ‘Quality & Range of Infrastructure & Facilities’ followed by ‘Level of Community Involvement & Engagement’.

NEW AGRI-ENVIRONMENTAL SCHEME (REAP). The Results-Based Environment-Agri Pilot Project (REAP) is the new The Department of Agriculture scheme to address the environment and is to be a replacement of REPS as opposed to AEOS or GLAS. DAFM are currently finalising a register of Agricultural Advisors specifically for this project. It will be necessary for applicants to engage the services of a qualified advisor from this list in order to make an application. All farmers are advised to stick with your original advisor, as the service provided by all will be basically the same. The pilot will be advertised nationally and will be open to farmers who have not participated in GLAS and who are not currently in an agrienvironment scheme. A project information booklet will be available to view online as well as the Terms and Conditions of REAP in advance of the opening of the application process. Applicants accepted into the project will be sent a hard copy of this project information booklet. To facilitate a more efficient application process and in particular the creation of the online link between the advisor and the applicant, farmers should register for the Department’s mobile messaging service. This can be arranged by the applicant by sending a request to opt into the SMS service with their details (name, address, herd number and an up to date mobile number) to ccsadmin@agriculture.gov.ie. It should be noted that applicants must have a herd number and must be registered with DAFM. In advance of making the application for REAP, an applicant will need to ensure that their details registered with the Department are up to date. The Department will hold an online information session for farmers in advance of the opening of the application process. Full training will only be provided to advisors who have clients accepted into the project in late May/early June. This training is a prerequisite to being an approved advisor for the pilot and will take place over two days. This is confusing, as it will be necessary to be trained prior to submitting an application, not after the fact, one must presume. In order to engage in the assessment and scoring process required under the results-based approach, it will be necessary for advisors to successfully pass this training. The details of this training will issue closer to the date. More details will be announced, when available. TOP TIPS TO IMPROVED SPRING NITROGEN On grassland farms, having enough grass available for livestock to graze is crucial to ensuring a profitable enterprise. Five ‘factsheets’ advising farmers on how to improve and maintain water quality in and around their farms have been recently launched. One of these factsheets deals with early nitrogen in spring grassland. In springtime, applying nitrogen (N) fertiliser will help to provide enough grass as livestock are turned out from winter housing. Key decisions to ensuring sufficient supply of grass are the timing and rate of fertiliser N application. The challenges lie with achieving “maximum returns” from applied fertiliser N, without there being negative impacts on water quality. Nitrate in the soil “is both soluble and mobile”. In free draining soils, nitrate loss can occur when available nitrate in the soil, that is not recovered during grass growth in spring or autumn, is removed by percolating water. If soils become saturated or are subjected to heavy rainfall, this nitrate is more likely to leach down through the soil profile. Once nitrate travels below the root zone, it will be lost to groundwater where it can have a negative impact on water quality. Early spring and autumn/winter are the times of the year with highest risk of nitrate leaching, due to grass growth rates being low and rainfall levels at their highest. Any nitrate applied during these conditions is at greater risk of leaching and careful application of fertiliser N is critical to reduce this risk. The benefits of improved spring nitrogen use are: • N applied in suitable conditions will help improve nitrogen use efficiency; 14 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
• Reduction in the level of nitrate leached to groundwater; • Improved financial return from fertiliser investment; • Potential to reduce fertiliser N rate required and reduce fertiliser costs on farms. When applying early spring nitrogen, only spread if fields are suitable for tractor work, when water is drained sufficiently and where heavy rainfall is not forecast. Apply fertiliser N when soil temperature is greater than 6° and rising. Typically, this occurs around the end of February however, this will vary across the country and from year-to-year. Target fields for early N that are most likely to respond to an early N application: fields at optimum soil fertility [pH, P and K]; perennial ryegrass swards; recently reseeded or with a grass cover of greater than 400kg DM/ha or 5cm grass. Match chemical N applied to grass growth rates as this varies across the country. Apply up to 30kg N/ha [24 units N/ha] maximum in first split and avoid fields that have received an application of cattle slurry To ensure efficient and accurate application of fertiliser, calibrate fertiliser spreaders and use GPS equipment where available. Use protected urea for early N applications as this will help reduce the risk of nitrate leaching. HARVEST VALUE OF CONIFER FOREST UP TO €10 to 15K/ACRE Forestry growers are being warned to exercise caution about selling harvesting rights to their woodlands, according to the Irish Forest Owner’s Group, (IFO). The representative body highlighted that based on today’s prices, the final harvest value of a conifer forest is likely to be in the region of €10,000–€15,000 per acre and is concerned that many private forest owners may not realise the true value of their asset. A number of investment companies are seeking to buy the harvesting rights from private forest owners, offering a lump sum upfront with annual payments until clear-fell, it stated. Many landowners have invested in forestry, especially over the last thirty years. Owners should be cautious of relinquishing the value of their timber mid-way through the life cycle of their trees. They should not become sharecroppers on their own land. It is of particular concern that these companies are cherry-picking softwood plantations that have recently come out of premium payments and that the owners are not being offered the true value of their forest. It is recommended that any forest owner considering these offers gets a valuation of their forest from an independent expert. Forest owners can also benefit from information and support from their local forest owners group, as well as independent advice from their local consultant. Forest owners also need to consider the tax implications of selling their harvesting rights carefully. At present, there is a “favourable” tax regime for forest owners for profits relating to forestry and for the transfer of forestry to the next generation. It is possible that relinquishing harvesting rights may have unforeseen adverse tax implications for the landowner and their family. Detailed independent legal and taxation advice is vital. The carbon embedded in private forests has an important potential value that must also be considered. These values must be properly quantified and vested in the forests for the benefit of the owners. And finally, if we are to increase out forest cover from circa 10% to the needed target of 25-30% cover, more farmers need to get involved, and that means planting. To do this, in the west Kerry Region, the approval policy may need to be re-evaluated, and approvals are low at present. This is as much climatic as opposed to human influenced, but there needs to be a second look, or consideration of wind-break planting to protect young plantations, it this could work. DOG CONTROL To anyone who doesn’t know, this is lambing season. It is when lambs and their mothers are most vulnerable. Unfortunately it is a time of year when people let their pet dog out in the evening or early morning to have a gander and tend to nature. As a result of these actions, some dogs
group up and ramble, and this is when the damage can be done. We have heard some gruesome tales of the savagery of dogs who attached recently lambed ewes and lambs. The carnage is awful and most times the kills are for fun. It’s like having a bunch of nazi’s running around your flock. Recently, a discussion took place about releasing wolves and wild cats into the wild. If this happened, those animals would feed to eat. These dogs kill to play. Then they go back home, and their owner say good boy “Pat” of good girl “Sally-anne”, put them in front of the fire and are none the wiser. But they can be killers, and owners must supervise their dogs. Every dog is a wolf, but are not trained to be one. Keep All Dogs Supervised At All Times! KERRY LAND PRICES UP 40% in 12 MONTHS Farmland prices in Kerry rose by 40% last year. That’s according to the annual land price survey in the Irish Farmers’ Journal. Last year, 1,257 acres of land across 28 farms in Kerry was put on the market.

Thánadar i leith an bóthar a siúl ansan, scoilteadar ansan, chuaigh leath acu síos, bóthar Johnny Barrett síos (Cluain Chumhra) taobh so, chuaigh an leath eile suas drom bhur dtighne soir (Cathasaigh, Páirc an Teampaill). Bhí machine gunna ag ceann acu, agus thosnaigh sé sin ar an seanabhóthar mar a raibh na leaideanna, agus th’anam ’on diabhal, bhí sé ina chogadh dearg ar feadh cúpla uair a chloig, sin é mar a bhí an scéal acu. Ach, buaileadh an t-Ághasach agus buaileadh Tommy Hauley ó Thrá Lí, agus buaileadh fear eile ón Leitriúch, tháinig sé sin isteach go dtí do mháthair chríonna Cáit (Sítheach ó Chathair Phiarais, Uí Shúilleabháin) agus fuil ag imeacht leis, ach strac sí braillín agus cheangail sí suas an lámh, ansan sa ghoulainn a bhí sé buailte – Cáit ‘Curney’ do sheanamháthair críonna – agus cheangail sí suas é, ambaist, bhí beirt nó triúr ina theannta – drom a tí, an cúldoras amach ansan leo, agus sara dh’imigh sé amach, chuir sí leathphiúnt fuiscí síos ina phóca i gcóir a bhóthair. Agus chuaigh sé go Meirice ina dhiaidh sin, agus tháinig sé abhaile i gceann deich mbliana agus tháinig sé isteach anso thoir (Tabhairne Uí Shúilleabháin, Garraí na dTor) lá agus bhí sé a lorg t’athair críonna Joe, ní raibh sé timpeall, ach pé duine acu a bhí istigh, n’fheadar arbh é Tony nó Kathleen, dúirt sé cérbh é fhéin, Mac Uí Dhálaigh ón Leitriúch ab ea é, agus woundálach san ambush é, agus do sheanmháthair chríonna a shábháil a anam leis an leathphiúnt fuiscí a thug sí dhó. Bhí san fíor, glan – bhí, Mac Uí Dhálaigh!
R: ’B’é sin an Domhnach, ab ea? M: Dé Sathairn, agus chaitheamar slí a dhéanamh dóibh, bhí ceathrar againn fhéin acu, ach go háirithe, bhí dhá leaba i seomra againn, ón Leitriúch ab ea iad san. Ach ar maidin ansan, maidin Dé Domhnaigh, maidin lá arna mhárach, ní raibh ’fhios againn-ne éinní nuair a thángamair ón aifreann. Bhíodh an t-aifreann déanach an uair sin, aon déag a chlog a thosnaíodh sé, agus cuimhním go maith air, thángamair abhaile ón aifreann, bhí sé dó dhéag a chlog is dóigh liom, is hanam ’on diabhal, nuair a thánga isteach, bhí an tigh istigh, ceathrar nó cúigear istigh is raidhfilí caite 16 Corca Dhuibhne Beo

Dingle Notes Richie Williams CHELTENHAM. What a thrill it was to lift the spirits in the midst of the pandemic restrictions to see our own Jack Kennedy steer Minella Indo to a really great victory in the Cheltenham Gold Cup last week. And to top off his successful trip to the Cotswolds he steered another horse from the back of the field to a stunning victory just on the finishing line. What a pity some of the Dingle or indeed Irish supporters were not present to celebrate this year. Well done Jack. AN DÍSEART . Congratulations to Faye Greeley and Mollie Ní Shé, pupils of Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne who were the recipients of the Group Category in the Kerry Garda Youth Achievements Awards last weekend. These young ladies were rewarded for their untiring work in collecting funds for their Cara Project which helps underpriviledged families in Kenya. Students from the Pobal Scoil also featured prominently in their various categories at the recent County Enterprise Awards and several groups will go forward to the National Finals very shortly.
areas litter free and do some weeding on the foothpaths and kerbs and roadsides all with social distancing in mind. It is intended to organise the National Tidy Towns Competion with remote judging however that system will work out this year. We have recently replaced the timber surrounds under the trees at the Bus Stop but within 2 days at least 3 careless drivers have damaged these by parking too close to the kerbs. Also some canine owners have allowed their dogs to use the beds as suitable areas to go to the toilet and not clean up the mess afterwards. Shame on the few who really should not be allowed to own an animal if they cannot clean up after them. ROAD SAFETY. Despite the long lockdown and less vehicles on the roads a total of 148 people died on our roads in 2020. Of these 62 were drivers, 26 passengers(many of whom did ot wear a seat belt), 32 pedestrians, 17 motorcyclists and 10 cyclists.
RATHMORE 064 7758328
Statistics show that 90% of pedestrians hit by a vehicle at 30kph survive while only 20% of pedestrians hit by a vehicle at 50kph survive. These figures clearly show that speed is the real killer on our roads so please drivers take a little extra care for your own safety and particularly of all other road users also. Please always wear a high vis jacket or bright clothing when running, cycling or walking on public roads. COVID. Hopefully the vaccine rollout system will speed up over the next few weeks and silence all those who seem to find fault with everything that is happening in the system at present. Whatever happened to a LITTLE PATIENCE which were the words used when we were waiting for something in my youth. SLÁN TAMALL!!!.

In an effort to bring some form of good cheer to the area the organisers of Féile Na Bealtaine intend to erect bunting and props around Dingle town and other areas in the Peninsula over the May Bank Holiday Weekend. People who would like to be part of the effort are invited to make bunting with material and colour and design of their own choosing except plastic should not be used for environmental purposes. The individual flags should be triangular measuring 24cm at the wide end and 33cm in length. Completed flags can be dropped off at the Diseart or local outlets around the Peninsula. Local Artist Deirdre Mckenna is the co-ordinator of the project and more information is available online at deirdremckenna.com. Great idea and we certainly need ideas like this to lift the spirits again. TIDY TOWNS. Comhghairdeas leis na rannpháirtithe ar fad ó Coder Dojo Chorca Dhuibhne a bhí páirteach i dTech Féile 2021 a bhí ar siúl 22-25ú Márta. Féile iontach a chuireadh ar siúl ag Clár Techspace arís i mbliana.
Hope you are all well and getting out into Spring sun, between the showers. Great to see the daffodils up and spring springing. We’re delighted to share so many positive stories in our update this week. We’re thrilled to have received funding as part of Science Foundation Ireland’s Discover Programme towards Dingle Peninsula 2030 – A Model Enabling Community-led Climate Action – the project will build capacity for STEM engagement in community-based climate action, which provides an ideal platform for up-scaling and amplified impact, from local to national levels. This project will be led by MaREI SFI Research Centre for Energy, Climate and Marine. Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, Simon Harris TD, last week announced €5.2 million in funding to support 49 projects as part of Science Foundation Ireland’s Discover Programme. As part of the recent virtual launch of the Rural Development Policy 2021-2025, Our Rural Future, on Monday 29th March, we were delighted to get the opportunity to showcase projects on the Dingle Peninsula and to talk about how the vibrant and diverse ecosystem we have built from the launch of the Dingle Hub in 2017, is key to encouraging ideas and collaborative projects under the pillars of sustainability, digital transformation and creative industries; this ecosystem is also key to the creation of viable, year-round jobs. We also recognise huge value in community authored planning to inform a sustainable future on the Peninsula. According to the government website, “the vision of this policy is for a thriving rural Ireland which is integral to our national economic, social, cultural and environmental wellbeing and development. An Ireland which is built on the interdependence of urban and rural areas. An Ireland which recognises the centrality of people, the importance of vibrant and lived-in rural places, and the potential to create quality jobs and sustain our shared environment. Our Rural Future represents the Irish Government’s blueprint for a post-COVID-19 recovery and development of rural Ireland over the next five years. It provides the framework to achieve the vision of transforming the quality of life and opportunity for people living in rural areas.“ C

We’re really happy with the positive response from
our first two sessions in our InstaLive series, ‘Dingle Adapts’; Thanks a million to our first two guests - Mark Murphy from The Little Cheese Shop and Fiadh from Fiadh Woven Design - for taking time to chat to us and tell us about their businesses and how they managed to set up businesses in Dingle and continue to grow. We're running this series to spotlight local, sustainable businesses based on the Dingle Peninsula. We're really interested to get insights into how these businesses started and evolved, how working with local suppliers has positively impacted their business and how they incorporate sustainability into their business and day-to-day work. We would love to encourage future partnerships and successful collaborations between businesses on the Dingle Peninsula and beyond. Follow us on socials to get info on upcoming guests. We’ll have chats every Wednesday at 7pm, love to see you there. You can watch the chats back on our IGTV and Facebook pages. Táimid an-shásta go bhfuaireamar aiseolas iontach ar fad faoin sraith IG Beoshruthaithe, ‘Corca Dhuibhne ag dul in Oiriúint’. Míle buíochas leis an mbeirt aoi a bhí mar chuid den tsraith go dtí seo - Mark Murphy ón siopa cáis agus Fiadh - agus leis lucht féachana ar fad. Tá an tsraith seo á chur ar siúl againn chun caint le gnónna dhuibhneach, buanaithe. Tá suim faoi leith againn léargas a fháil faoi conas a thosnaigh na gnónna seo agus conas a d’fhorbair siad. Ba bhreá linn comhoibriú agus comhpháirtíocht a spreagadh idir gnónna i gCorca Dhuibhne. Is féidir Dingle Hub a leanúint ar na meáin shóisialta chun a bheith ar an eolas faoin gcéad aoichaointeoir eile sa sraith seo agus faoi imeachtaí eile. Beidh IG beoshruthaithe againn gach Céadaoin ag a 7i.n. Is féidir féachaint siar ar na comhráite ar IGTV agus ar Facebook. “When I go to write or compose music and songs, it helps me to put different aspects of life into perspective. I come from an Irish speaking and musical culture and I am very grateful that an amalgamation of the tradition and freedom of expression has brought this project to life. “There are many local artists involved in the making of this album such as Elouise Flannery who, after listening to the song, painted a stunning picture entitled, “Lon Dubh” (Blackbird) which is included in the cover design. The trojan work of recording and engineering was made by Donogh Hennessy and Matt Griffin, the front cover picture was taken by Manuela Dei Grandi and many singers and musicians from the area are to be heard throughout the album especially on, “Amhrán na nGael”. World renowned musicians such as Liam Ó Maonlaí, Steve Cooney and Ritchie Buckley are also to be heard.
New Album Singer and musician Méabh Ní Bheaglaoich from Baile na bPoc has just released her debut solo album of largely her own works entitled “Mise le Meas - Yours sincerely”. It includes newly composed music and songs in Irish and English.

Seo mar a tugadh an ainm seo ar na laetheannta. Bhí bó riabhach ann fadó agus thánaig Márta cruaidh gaothmhar garbh uirthi. Fuair an bhó seo buadh ar an Mhárta go h-airithe. Bhí áthas uirthi nuair a thánaigh an “céad lá do Abrán agus do labhair sí go neamh-spleadhach agus adubhairt, “Táim bog ort anois tá an t-Abrán bog braonach tagaithe agus agus níl beann ar bith agam ort.” Cad do dhein an Mhárta ach iompúghadh siar arís agus iasacht lae d’iarraidh ar an Abrán. Fuair an Márta an lá. Do shéid sé go cruaidh a leithéid d’aimsire ní fheacaidh aoinne riamh é ó shoin. Chuir an lá sin deire leis an mbuin riabhaigh. Sin é an fáth gur tugadh laetheannta na Riabhaiche ar na laetheannta ar na laetheannta sin. Tourism Talk and Thoughts from the Dingle Peninsula Caroline Boland Cáisc Shona Dhaoibh……. Happy Easter to you all and hope that you are keeping safe and well. Comhghairdeachas to Animation Dingle’s virtual festival last weekend and let’s hope that all our Festivals will be back to normal for late 2021 / 2022. This week will have seen the easing of some Level 5 restrictions and so, it is hoped (as of writing March 29th) that some of our outdoor recreation and sporting activities will have been reopened under their usual safety guidelines. With longer days setting in, it will give us the perfect opportunity to stay outdoors longer, further appreciate the magical place we live in, our spectacular landscape, and now, as the country begins to re-open slowly, start to think about our tourism and hospitality future and what we can do to make it a little brighter and even more special. Tourism Thoughts and Tips Did you know that www.dingle-peninsula.ie is the Number 1 ranking website for the Dingle Peninsula since its creation in 1996? As we begin to celebrate its 25th year - its content, imagery and video; connections to local villages, businesses and experiences combined with its local knowledge – makes it the official global website for Ireland’s Dingle Peninsula and the best ‘Guide book’ for visitors when planning how long to stay, and what to see and do when they get here. Make sure you are a part of it…….. “Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine”. In our last article, I introduced blogs as a great way to not only promote your tourism business but also to tell a great local story or share your own experiences as you enjoy the amazing landscape of Leithinis Chorca Dhuibhne. As a promotional tool, Google rates them highly and so they increase the Search Engine Optimisation of your website and are great posts to share on your social media. But, did you know you can take your blog, 28 Corca Dhuibhne Beo
website and social media to another higher level by creating and integrating videos onto your platforms or through featured and / or themed posts. Some of our local businesses are already doing so to great success and it gives their own businesses and Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance, fantastic promotional footage to showcase the magic of the Dingle Peninsula. The following are some Video Marketing stats from 2019 (pre-Covid-19): • “85% of all internet users in the United States watched online video content monthly on any of their devices. Which means that video content is becoming increasingly popular. • 54% of consumers want to see more video content from a brand or business they support. This goes to show that the demand for video content is also increasing.
second or longer (Facebook currently ‘likes’ videos over 3 minutes long) – to tell your local story, your favourite local experience or favourite local place to be and ‘wrap it into’ your village, community or business story. Let’s connect with our past and future visitors to get them come and stay, and stay longer, when it is safe to do so. So, for now, with some Level 5 restrictions being eased, please continue to follow Government Guidelines, minding our most vulnerable by supporting official Level 5 restrictions (https:// www.gov.ie/en/publication/2dc71-level-5/), reducing the pressure on our health care system and front-line workers. If you have any tourism development or marketing queries you would like to discuss confidentially, please contact Caroline at info@bolandmarketing. com .
• Videos are a consumers’ favorite type of content to see from a brand on social media. Consumers expect more video content. • The average user spends 88% more time on a website with video. This shows that video content improves engagement on your website. • Where both video and text are available on the same page, 72% of people would rather use video to learn about a product or service. This means that people show a preference for video content over text. • YouTube is the second largest search engine, with the largest being Google. It has huge potential. • Viewers are 95% more likely to remember a call to action after watching a video, compared to 10 percent when reading it in text format. Which means that video content is easier to remember than written content.” So, while you are out and about enjoying the wonders of the Dingle Peninsula this Easter, start creating your own videos – 30 second, 60

Whole Roasted Cauliflower with Lemon and Caper Salsa Mark Murphy: Dingle Cookery School
Method for the salsa Put a pan on over medium heat, add the pine nuts (no oil) and cook for about 2 minutes. Remove them and chop them. Once they have cooled add them to a bowl and add the parsley, garlic, toasted, lemon zest and capers to a bowl. Add extra virgin olive oil and lemon juice. Mix this all well. Taste and adjust the season if needed (remember that the capers will be salty so you probably won’t need any extra salt). Leave this while you roast the cauliflower. for the cauliflower Preheat the oven to 180ºC Heat an ovenproof pan over a medium heat (if you don’t have a pan that can be added to the oven, you can cook the onions and then transfer them to an oven dish). Add some olive oil and add the onions and a pinch of salt. Cook theses for about 10 minutes. Keep stirring them as the cook. Once the onions have cooked take the pan of the heat.
Whatever you plan to have for dinner this Easter, this will make a great side dish! Roasting cauliflower changes cauliflower completely, it gives it a nutty flavour. It will be crunchy on the outside and should be soft on the inside. I have added a lemon and caper salsa which will add a freshness to it, but when cauliflower is roasted it will also work with spices such as turmeric or chilli. The salsa that I have included will taste is just as delicious with fish such as a black sole or with pork chops.
Brush the cauliflower with olive oil, season well with salt and pepper. Place this in the centre of the pan. Add the stock (you can use water if you have no stock as it is only being used to help the onions from browning too much). Cover the pan with foil and place in the oven. Allow this to cook for about 25 minutes. Remove the foil at this stage, if you think the onions are browning too much you can always add a little more water. Turn the heat up to 200ºC and cook for another 20-25 minutes.
Hope this dish will become a regular on your table.
Remove from the oven and allow it to cool a little before serving.
Happy Easter.
To serve spoon the salsa over the cauliflower and place the pan on the table.

Martin O’Halloran foilsithe ag
Homefarm Publishing ‘In spring, 1940, twenty four families (127 people) boarded two buses in Clonbur (An Fhairche, Contae na Gaillimhe) to make new lives in a new Gaeltacht colony in Meath. Their cattle, sheep and all their worldly possessions travelled separately on thirteen lorries. This resettlement was identified by De Valera’s government and by the Irish Land Commission as Gaeltacht Colony Number 5. A living wake took place, the likes of which had not been seen before in Clonbur. Strong men kissed stone walls. They left the lakes, rivers and mountains of the poorest and most congested of districts anywhere on the west coast of Ireland for the lush, fertile lands of Meath. This is their story - of poverty and congestion in rural slums in the west, the selection process by the Irish Land Commission, threats and conflict and opposition, the migration process, settlement and social integration in Allenstown, their struggle for survival during ‘The Emergency’, their triumph and their ongoing relationship with their homeland, and the death of a Gaeltacht.’ An Café Liteartha Bóthar an Dadhgaide, Daingean Uí Chúis Siopa Leabhar an Daingin ó 1979

Ó Mhárthain Breandán Mac Gearailt Tá an t-am nua againn. Beidh ciorrrú uair a chloig ar an ghrian ar maidin ach uair breise gréine (nó báisteach liath) sa tráthnóna. Is dócha go bhfuil do chlog curtha uair a chloig chun cinn agat. Ní raibh aon duine maith a dhóthain don athrú ama ach Fr. Tom. Ní athraíodh sé a chlog, mar sin an té a bheadh ag súil le Aifreann an Domhnaigh ar a 10 de réir an am nua sa tsamhraidh bhíodh fanacht uair a chloig aige. Gaisce Ní inniu ná inné a ghnóthaigh an marcach Jeaic Kennedy gaisce ach b’é a bharra bua ná i ráiseanna Cheltenham na bliana seo mar a mbuaidh sé Corn Óir na féile agus trí rás eile. Tá muintir an cheantair móralach as Jeaic agus gan dabht ní hé an chéad mharcach sa chlann é, is mó rás buaite ag a dheartháracha Paddy agus Micheál roimhe. Ba ghnáth le slua mór ón gceantar taisteal go Feile Ráiseanna Cheltenham ach gan dabht bhí cosc ar sin i mbliana. Comhghairdeachas a Jeaic. Mí-cheart Tá scata ar na boilg ag cáineadh an ainm gan deáramh a tugadh ar an scata tí atá á dtógaint nó togtha ag Comhairle Contae Chiarraí lastoir don nDaingean. Níl fhios agam an raibh an freagra ceart i gceann an duine a thug ainm gan tuiscint ar na tithe, ach gan dabht Páirceanna na Glaise, nó Páirceanna an tSrutháin an t-ainm cheart. Chuireadar an chaid ar fóraoil. Cáineadh iad agus is dócha san tuillte acu.
Greann Is géir a theastaíonn píosa gáirí uainn an aimsir seo. Éinne nach bhfaca Mario Rosenstock ar an Late Late Show Lá ‘le Pádraig agus é ag déanamh aithris ar Christy Moore leis an amhrán ‘Lockdown Harder’ b’fhiú dó dul á lorg ar na meáin. Mura mbainfidh sé gáirí asat, tá droch-bhail ort. Bás Fuair Éibhlín Mhic ‘n tSaoir ní Ghearailt ón mBóthar Buí bás le déanaí. Bhí gaol gairid agam léi. Measaim gurbh í an duine deireannach do ál Gearaltach Chathair Scuilibín. Bhí Eibhlín pósta le Paidí an tSaorsaigh, fear rince, cleachtan agus drámaíochta agus ball láidir do Chearta Sibhialta na Gaeltachta. Bean chneasta chleachtúil b’ea Éibhlín, go raibh aos maith aici. Ní raibh sí ar fónamh le tamall. Deinimid cómhbhrón ó chroí lena a mac Seán agus a triúr iníon, Máire, Bríde agus Treasa. In iothlainn Dé go raibh a hanam. Fuair Pádraig ó hAoláin, ó Thiobrad Arann agus na Forbacha, bás an tseachtain seo caite. Chaith Pádraig cuid mhór dá shaol ag plé le leas na Gaeltachta, le comharchumainn sara a nglac sé post le Údarás na Gaeltachta. Deinimid cómhbhrón le Beití, Fionnuala, Caitríona, Neasa, Páraic, Aogán agus Féilim. Fear cumasach b’ea Pádraig go mbí an Ghaeltacht agus an Ghaeilge ba mhó a bhí ar a phaidrín. Thug sé leagan amach dearfach don Údarás agus bhí coitianta ag iarraidh fostaíocht a chruthú sa Ghaeltacht. Fear pobail go raibh blas ar a chuid oibre. Ard chainteoir, fear fáilteach suailceach. Fear iomána agus gan amhras leas na Gaeltachta agus na teanga agus fear cumtha agus ráite amhrán. Solas síorraí ‘ge a anam fiúntach cumasach Gaelach. Sár fhear ar lár.
