Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone 8.45pm Tuesday Nights

On Tuesday 28th June the Dingle Film Club will screen the Turkish film Mustang. The film is set in a remote Turkish village and depicts the lives of five young orphaned sisters and the challenges they face growing up as girls in a conservative society. An event that triggers the family backlash against the five sisters at the beginning of the film is based on the director’s personal life and sets up a bracing and powerful tale of the universal passion for freedom. The following week on Tuesday 5th July the feature will be Love and Friendship. Set in the 1790’s this romantic comedy is based on Jane Austen’s Lady Susan. Starring Kate Beckinsale, and Stephen Fry the film focuses on the machinations of a beautiful widow, Lady Susan Vernon, who, while waiting for social chatter about a personal indiscretion to pass, takes up temporary residence at her in-laws’ estate. Whilst there, she decides to secure a husband for herself and her rather reluctant debutante daughter, Frederica. 4 West Kerry Live

safely and in good time. The season of Regattas, Races and local Festivals is upon us once the exams are finished and the full list of events is printed elsewhere in the edition.

Richard Williams Eir are hosting an Open Briefing on Monday next June 27th in An Diseart between 12 o clock and 1.30pm to outline their high speed Broadband plans for Co Kerry. Everybody welcome so a great chance to get an update on what type and when we may expect an improvement in the Broadband Service in Corca Dhuibhne. The All Ireland Feile na n-Óg under 14 football competition for both boys and girls is being held in Kerry this weekend. All the West Kerry clubs will be hosting teams from around Ireland and abroad from this Thursday so please come out and support the games at the various venues and the big Parade in Dingle on Saturday evening starting at 7p.m. from the Mart Car Park. Games start on Friday at 5p.m. and Saturday at 11a.m. Cuir failte mor flaithiuil roimh ar gcuirteoiri uiligh an deireadh seachtaine speisealta seo. The official opening of the new wing in Dingle Oceanworld Mara Beo was held recently with Paudie Fitzgerald doing the honours ably assisted by the other founding directors. The new additions to the already well stocked displays are a great attraction and a credit to the forward thinking of the directors and staff at this wonderful local facility. Great to see so many people of all ages visiting Mara Beo which is one of the few such amenities to survive in these tough economic times. Comhgairdeachas libh go leir.!!

There are a number of Camps for all age groups also scheduled over the next few weeks so plenty to keep our young people active during the holidays with full details in this edition also. I was very impressed with the welcome, the service, the meal and the presentation of same in the Fathers Day Lunch at a local restaurant last Sunday, It would certainly prompt one to recommend the establishment to others and I hope all our restaurants and catering outlets give the same service as high standards are what attract return visits for visitors and locals alike. Mile Buiochas everybody. Tidy Towns Work Evenings continue on Tuesdays meeting at the Bottle Bank at 7p.m. It is highly likely that the National Competition Judges will be paying their surprise visit around this time so we need everyone to come out and help keep their own street, estate or road clean and tidy. Great work going on in some of the estates so keep up the good effort folks and what a difference a half hours contribution can make if enough bodies joined in the work. Slan Tamall

Arising from a recent meeting of the local area advisory committee of NEWKD it was decided to appeal to all road users to show more tolerance, care and consideration when travelling. The huge increase in the tourist numbers on all our roads this year increases the possibility of more accidents occurring. So motorists please slow down, cyclists and walkers be courteous and wear high vis gear and slow moving vehicle drivers be aware of traffic building up behind your vehicle. And starting your journey a little earlier than normal will ensure you get there 6 West Kerry Live

Cooking with Herbs: Basil, Lemon and Lime Biscuits

In a bowl or a mixer mix the basil, flour, sugar, salt and the zest together. Rub in the butter and add in the juice and bring the mix together until it forms a smooth dough. Be careful not to over work it, once it has come together warp it in cling film and allow to rest in the fridge for about a half an hour. Roll out the dough and cut out the biscuits to the shape you want. You can dust with a little sugar if you want. Put them in the oven and bake for 15 minutes or until they are lightly browned. Once they are ready put them on a wire rack to allow them to cool.

Mark Murphy -

Dingle Cookery School

Fresh herbs in your kitchen will add so much your cooking!

Enjoy!!!

Up until recently I have always wanted to grow herbs, everybody always said they are easy to grow (they are). I have always put it on a list of things to do saying that I will get around to it someday. This year I finally got around to sowing plenty of herbs for the kitchen. At the cookery school with the help of Greta from Greta’s Herbs we sowed a selection of herbs ranging from common herbs like rosemary, parsley, thyme, sage to herbs which I have not used as often such as lemon balm and summer savoury. Having an abundance of herbs growing has added so much more depth to dishes I cook. It is worth growing a few herbs to start off and start adding them to your cooking. You will notice the difference of flavour immediately when they are so fresh. We are running a special class ‘Grow, Manage & Cook with Herbs’ on Wednesday 6th July at 5pm at the Cookery School. We are teaming up with Greta from Greta’s herbs for the ultimate class on herbs. Greta will provide you plenty of knowledge of how to grow herbs and how to care for them while I will take you through several recipes using herbs. To get you started I have included a recipe here for using basil with some cookies. Basil, Lemon and Lime Biscuits Ingredients 130g flour 70g cup caster sugar 100g butter, cut into small cubes Bunch of fresh basil leaves finely chopped ½ Lemon juiced and zested ½ Lime juiced and zested Pinch of salt Method Preheat oven to 180ºC.

Launch Of New Initiative Of Cashflow Tool For Dairy Farmers. The first meeting of the Dairy Forum was held on the Longest Day (Tuesday 21st June) with key stakeholders from the Irish dairy sector. The continuation of this Forum is an effort to address the need for a collaborative strategic approach to the issues facing the sector including current market volatility. The forum discussed ongoing challenges in the sector with an emphasis on current market developments and the response currently under consideration at EU level. At the Forum, Minister Creed launched a new collaborative response to difficulties experienced by farmers in planning cash flow projections in the short to medium term. This takes the form of a booklet delivered by the Department of Agriculture, the advisory services, the banks and the processors to help farmers better plan their on-farm cash-flow. Other measures at EU and national level include €26.4m in targeted direct aid payments to dairy farmers, and the advance payment of some €1.2billion in 2015 BPS payments. Similarly, the introduction or continuation of various market support measures at EU level including the PSA schemes for SMP, cheese and butter as well as intervention for SMP have been of some assistance. Domestically, some processors have rolledout of a number of fixed milk price schemes and flexible credit schemes which can also be of assistance. Access to Finance was also discussed with an exchange of views with the main banks now a firm part of the agenda at each dairy forum. The Minister confirmed that this topic was also discussed when he chaired the Food Wise 2025 High Level Implementation Committee last week when representatives from the Strategic Banking Corporation of Ireland (SBCI) and the Irish Strategic Investment Fund (ISIF) attended. Access to credit and the cost of credit for farmers will be examined closely. Many but not all of the banks were met. One of the priorities will be to support the provision of lower cost and more flexible finance for the sector and this message must be sent clearly to all of the banking institutions (and Credit Unions). One of the initiatives recently agreed by the Dairy Forum (comprising farm organisations, co-ops and processors, the Department and its agencies, as well as the banking sector) is a programme of cash flow and financial management training and advice for dairy farmers. The publication of a booklet entitled ‘Cash Flow & Financial Management on Dairy Farms’, which will issue to all dairy farmers shortly from their co-op with their monthly milk cheque. Basic Payment Delays And Their Consequences Last year we survived the introduction of the new Basic Payment Scheme (BPS), but for many, there was much hardship involved, with delays in payment, reaching into February and March of 2016. This caused enormous financial strain of those who hoped torecieve their BPS, ANC and AEOS/GLAS payments in late Autumn 2016. If this trend continues, it may be time to look at alternative solutions, such as short-term borrowing, at preferential lending rates. In normal circumstances, a delay of two weeks in receiving payment can be catastrophic, but a two, three or even month delay is not excusable or tolerable. This may be the cause of serious mental anguish, and financial strain, that some are just not prepared for. Not being biased, but Dingle Credit Union recently announced a package that suits the needs of farmers, in danger of delayed payment, with a preferential interest rate, if they wish to borrow the equivalent amount of their combined farm payments. A Farm Loan designed to meet this need would be of great benefit to farmers, and could attract large numbers of farmers and their cash to Dingle Credit Union. The Loan would: • Not exceed the farmers total EU payment amount • Be available in Mid August, therefore allowing them earlier access to their money • Be given a preferential rate, as the loan would be guaranteed by their EU payments being mandated to DCU • Be classified as a business loan • Extend for six months, and be renewable, like an overdraft, but must be cleared for six months • Be repaid on a monthly basis, at 10% of total borrowings, with the final 40% paid on receipt of a specified EU payment (ie BPS Part 1), half way through the lending period. This would solve many financial problems, could possible drive DCU’s membership and Loan Book up and give it a much needed boost.

They would be then able to meet bills such as fertilizer, feed, vet, agri-contractor and ag advisor. This could then be used to draw business from these businesses, and this might also encourage them to endorse this loan and suggest it to clients who are slow to pay their bills. Farmers would also be able to spend more, and would also be encouraged to borrow more. Farmers are asset rich, and many receive large payments but in many cases tend to wait until they receive their EU payment before spending. This could encourage them to buy all year round using borrowing they can afford, spreading their payments over six or twelve months. Turkish Market Opens For Irish Cattle This must be a welcome new development in beef exports for the Irish economy, with a potential market of 75 million people. The opening of the Turkish market represents a significant achievement and comes at a very opportune time in advance of the expected larger number of stock coming to the market in late summer. Ireland’s high animal health status and its enhanced cattle traceability system facilitated this move. Mutual official visits culminated in Ireland being added to the Turkish list of approved countries. While this covers cattle for breeding, fattening and slaughter, the immediate focus of the trade is likely to be younger cattle of less than 12 months of age and less than 300kgs. In due course, it is expected that there will be opportunities for the export of breeding animals. Already, Irish commercial interests were making contact with Turkish buyers and it is hoped that contracts will follow in the short term. Statement Of Basic Payment Scheme Entitlements Introduced Farmers will shortly receive their Definitive Statement of Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) Entitlements which outlines the number and value of entitlements allocated to them under the Basic Payment Scheme from 2015 to 2019. The number of BPS entitlements allocated is determined by the number of eligible hectares declared by a farmer in 2013 or 2015, whichever was the lesser, and the value of entitlements allocated was based on a fixed percentage of the value of Single Payment Scheme entitlements owned by the farmer in 2014 and any payment received under the 2014 Grassland Sheep Scheme. All entitlements are subject to a process of internal convergence whereby all farmers whose entitlements are below the national average unit value will see their entitlements converge upwards on a phased basis to reach at least 60% of the national average unit value of entitlements by 2019. This increase is funded by a gradual reduction in the value of entitlements for those farmers whose entitlement unit value is in excess of the national average. The national average unit value of entitlements is €184. The Definitive Statement of Entitlements that will issue to each farmer sets out the convergence path of their entitlement values over the course of the scheme from 2015 to 2019 and their estimated overall payment including the Greening payment. This is important information which will allow farmers to be aware of the income support available to them and to be able to plan accordingly. The Statement of Entitlements will provide clarity for farmers on the number and value of their Basic Payment Scheme entitlements from 2015 to 2019. By 2019 all entitlements that have an initial unit value that is below 90% of the Basic Payment Scheme national average will gradually increase in value over the five years of the scheme. All entitlements must reach a minimum value of 60% of the Basic Payment Scheme national average by 2019. By 2019, no farmer will receive a payment per hectare of more than €700. Sheep Fencing Now Included In The Tams Ii Schemes Sheep Fencing was recently included in the list of eligible investments items in TAMS II. This is timely, but the question must be asked by the Department, why do they insist in leaving these announcements until the last moment, putting pressure on both farmers and advisors to complete these applications in time. Really, gentlemen, some consideration for others needs and capabilities is required here. Applicants can apply online immediately in the current tranche for Sheep Fencing which is included in the Animal Welfare, Safety and Nutrient Storage Scheme, The Young Farmer Capital Investment Scheme and the Organic Scheme. Applicants are subject to the eligibility criteria of these schemes. The current tranches close on the 24th of June and a new tranche will open for online applications on the 25th of June. The reference cost applicable is €5.34 per linear metre for sheep mesh with one strand of wire. For those who qualify in mountain areas the rate per linear metre of sheep mesh with one strand of wire is €8.01.Gateways will also be granted aided and the reference cost is €299.00 per gateway. Excerpts From A Dingle Diary

which will put a bright face on the place for the summer season. Got an invitation in the post today to the official opening of the new heritage centre in Ballyferriter which will take place on July 8.

Wednesday, June 25.

By Ted Creedon

A wet start to the day but cleared to give a very warm and sunny afternoon. The Government is getting panicky about the possibility of a rejection of the Divorce Referendum tomorrow. Taoiseach Garrett Fitzgerald has made a last minute appeal for a ‘Yes’ vote.

Friday, June 20, 1986. Almost the longest day but certainly one of the darkest days of summer with heavy black clouds and occasional showers and cool enough for November.

Dingle curate Fr. Dick O’Connor has a letter in the Irish Times today in which he compares Garrett Fitzgerald to King Henry V111.

The CBS Primary School kids are doing their summer tests at present. There are 6 to 8 pages of questions each day for nine-year-olds!

Disaster for France as they go down 2-0 to West Germany in the World Cup - not a great game but a solid one by the Germans who are never easy to beat and they now take on Argentina in Sunday’s final.

The 3rd St Brendan Festival got underway today and we were invited along to the opening at the Hillgrove Hotel where Bishop Diarmuid Ó Súilleabháin did the honours.

Thursday, June 26.

He acknowledged the belief that it always rains when he’s around by referring to himself as Easpuig na Báistí (The rain bishop).

Cast my vote in favour of the Divorce Referendum in the Convent Primary School, booth no: 4.

But what a disastrous opening - apart from the committee there were hardly 30 people there and the bishop was less than impressed.

Experts are predicting a 55% poll. It looks as if we’ll have no apples this year due to that cold wind in early May which stripped all the blossoms from the trees and most of the leaves.

Saturday, June 21.

There was a sudden and briefly violent electrical storm about 8pm. I got a mild shock from the tap in the bathroom just as the storm was overhead.

The longest day and another dark and brooding sky which threatened rain all day but held off ‘till after I had cut the lawn in the late afternoon. Dingle is quite busy and the shops seem to be doing well on this festival weekend.

Friday, June 27.

Brazil are out of the World Cup after a cracking game against France who won on a penalty shootout after extra time.

The Divorce Referendum has been roundly and soundly defeated by a majority of around 60% - a crushing defeat for Taoiseach Garrett Fitzgerald and company and they’ll be reeling from the shock for a long time to come.

Sunday, June 29.

Sunday, June 22. A fine sunny day for a change. Dr Finbar Ó Sé came to the house at 1.45pm and asked if I would do the commentary at the naomhóg races. There were only six entries for the World Championship race - last year there were 9 and no less than 15 in 1984. Only two Kerry crews entered - Dún Síon and Cuas - the other four were from Galway and included the Carna lads who beat Dún Síon in Spiddal last year.

A fine warm summer’s day. People in shorts and t-shirts everywhere. Argentina won the World Cup by beating the Germans 3-2. It was 2-all with six minutes left when Burruchaga struck with a killer goal.

Colm O’Sullivan and I shared the commentary during the main race. All the action was at the first buoy. Eddie Hutch’s crew clashed with Carna which allowed the Dún Síon crew of Pádraig Quinn, Paudo O’Connor, Seán O’Connor and Pat O’Connor to take and hold the lead to the finish line and gave them the trip to America which was sponsored by Virgin Airways. The ladies race was won by the Ventry crew of Joan Maguire, Dee Counihan, Beatrice Hicks and Cáit Fitzgerald.

Monday, June 23. There’s a report that a man died on Mount Brandon after falling more than a hundred feet - he was from Cork. Argentina beat England for a place in the World Cup semi-final last night but they did it by cheating when Maradona scored with his hand and the ref failed to see it. Spain lost out to Belgium who won 5-4 in a penalty shootout after extra time - a cracking game. Received the final draft of the text for the new Bórd Fáilte map of the peninsula for proof reading which I read and corrected.

Tuesday, June 24. The news this morning is that Barry McGuigan has lost his World Boxing title in Las Vegas to Steve Cruz from Texas in a 15-round contest which went the distance. McGuigan went down in the 10th and twice in the 15th - the temperature was 110°F. There’s a big development taking place in John St, just above Rohan’s shop. The big old derelict house has been knocked and the word is that a supermarket is to be built there. Many shops and houses in the town are getting a fresh coat of paint 14 West Kerry Live

Basil It’s hard to believe that midsummer has sailed past so quickly! I have enjoyed a short yet abundant growing season. The recent rain may have disappointed beachgoers but for us gardeners it was a welcome refreshment. Sadly, however, the accompanying wind battered my flourishing sunflowers, Sweet Williams, lupins and poppies. Despite the insertion of bamboo canes among tall-growing plants, our coastal westerlies carry salt which burns and damages foliage. It is necessary now to reinforce everything, deadhead and liquid feed to aid plant recovery. Continued effort with weeding is vital or a riot of unwanted seedlings will emerge after all that rain.

Basil is a much loved herb which is finally reaching its prime. This precarious plant requires special attention. Though easily grown from seed sown May onwards, the difficulty arises at the potting stage and this is usually due to overwatering and fluctuating temperatures. Sow seed every two weeks until the end of July to secure cropping until late autumn. The three varieties I have grown this year are Sweet Genovese (which sounds like the name of a song), its cousin Red Basil (which is an attractive maroon version), and Greek bush (a superb variety with tiny leaves and a delicate flavour). If we get a sunny summer they will all happily thrive in pots inside on a windowsill. There are several tricks to maintaining healthy plants. Basil abhors water on its leaves so water the compost only. Use water that is at room temperature; ideally collect rainwater which carries lovely nutrients and will invigorate these plants. Never water later than mid-afternoon as the plant may suffer an overnight chill. Always allow the compost to dry out almost completely between waterings. Do not water on dull days. Applying a little water every day is not the way to go. Basil dislikes having roots which are constantly wet.

Though we associate this herb with Italy, its origins are actually in dusty India. Its famed flavour has found its way all around the globe and it is used extensively in worldwide cuisine. There are over 100 varieties and flavours greatly vary! Its appealing aroma on a hot summer's day should get us reaching for the scissors to snip a (maximum) 2"/ 5 cm sprig from the top. This promotes bushy growth and will prevent greenfly attack: these pests first land on the tips to suck the sap. Treat Basil - the 'King of Herbs' kindly and be rewarded with a bounty of delicious leaves! Yes with no sunshine, event. To find out more and to register log you ask how! Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost. Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take- into account the rising cost of enContact: Eamonn Dowd 087-6720848 ergy, a system can pay for itself in 5 tofacebook/dowdyman 10 years. eamonndowd@hotmail.com

Constant Complaining and the GAA Tadhg Evans It’s often said you can’t please everyone, but when it comes to GAA you can’t please anyone. The Munster Football Championship is one of the many ever-present ingredients of a GAA summer, yet has never been mistaken for a necessity. Grand, matches between Kerry and Cork can be a bit special, but the history of the competition itself is dominated by forgettable meetings between its four ‘little’ counties, and cruel crushings of those ants by the tremendous weight of Kerry and Cork. There’s never been a sunny Sunday in Fitzgerald Stadium quite glorious enough to redeem the old ‘competition’. Some have dreamt of days where the ‘big two’ would finally face a consistent, constant challenger who could topple them year after year, for a while at least. Most have long given up thinking those thoughts. Clare interrupted a sixty-seven year sequence by beating Kerry in the 1992 showpiece, but that’s not been replicated since. Kerry and Cork’s mastery over Munster has spoiled any hope the competition has of being loved. So when one of them is beaten, surely, surely it’s time to celebrate? Particularly now, in the aftermath of an era where The Championship as a whole seemed to produce no shocks at all? Apparently not. Tipperary beat Cork almost a fortnight ago, but not a whole lot of goodwill has been expressed for Tipp outside of their county bounds since then. Here in Kerry, we’ve suddenly grown a fondness for Cork, and nostalgic longing for the good old days of playing the old enemy every single July, without fail, year in, year out.

complain about everything. That hunch has now been confirmed as truth. Some have spent almost a century decrying the absence of competitiveness from the Munster Championship, but once Tipperary deservedly bettered Cork in a cracking game of football that ebbed and flowed, everyone still despaired. We worried terribly that democracy had vanished from the intercounty game as the poor became poorer while the rich got richer, but Tipp have allayed those fears, for now at least. That is definitely a good thing. And while Tipp probably won’t win the Munster final, at least they have a chance of doing so – we’re as close as we’ve ever been in the last twenty-four years to seeing Cork and Kerry’s stranglehold being prised apart. That, also, is definitely a good thing. And as for facing into a Munster final with a new dance partner, we could do worse than remember the fact that some of the best Munster finals over the last twenty-five years have involved one of the ‘little four’, even if Clare in 1992 were the only minnows to end those lovely days out as provincial champions. Limerick haven’t won the title since 1896, yet they’ve scented the cup plenty times since 1991. Actually, is there a better remembered Munster final than Kerry’s lucky escape from the Treaty county’s little hands in 2004? Tipperary themselves should be looking to end a fourteen year wait in July, as opposed to one they’ve been counting since 1935. They outplayed Cork in the 2002 final, and but for Colin Corkery they would surely have won. But the complaints aren’t going to wilt, because they never do. Championship 2016 is already being subjected to enor-

Outside of The Kingdom, everyone’s bracing themselves for a one-sided finale, and they’re probably right to do that considering Tipperary’s breakthrough has oddly arrived in a year that’s seen some of their many promising stars decide not to line out for their county. But is that really reason enough to snub a rare positive story? Why are we suddenly speaking of Kerry-Cork finals with stretching smiles on our faces, when before they were just matches that were normally forgotten about within It’s long been suspected that everyone in the GAA is conditioned to 20 West Kerry Live

mous criticism, even though it’s provided more surprises than the last five volumes combined – we’ve seen Tipperary beating Cork, Galway slaying Mayo, Cavan shaking Tyrone, and most notably New York scaring the bejeesus out of everyone in Roscommon. We’ve already had some terrible games, but in a competition that has sixty matches, it might just be the fairest thing to allow for one or two duds. We needn’t complain about everything, even though as GAA folk we feel obliged to. Championship 2016 has gotten off to a pretty good start, and Tipperary playing in a Munster football final will make for a nice change. Smile. It won’t cost you your pride.

News from Camphill Community Dingle Christoph Jensen The Open Day on June 12th was the occasion when our new house was opened and christened with the support and singing of many friends. Cornelia led the many friends in playing the chimes. After Michael Carroll’s moving address, in which he mentioned Betsie Konink’s determination and enthusiasm, and his cutting of the golden ribbon, a human chain was formed making its way through the new building. We have indeed much to be grateful for. As reported elsewhere in West Kerry Live Alan Creedon’s Walk for Aoife was a roaring success. He and his family paid our community a visit before his journey back to the U.K. Apart from the funds that Alan raised with his walk, it is a privilege to meet him in person and listening to his account of his walk from Manchester to Dingle and his crossing of the Irish Sea. Do visit his blog walkforaoife.com on the web. We take this opportunity to thank all those who contributed to the donations for our community which stand at €13,057 so far. The houses at Coic Chnoic are finally listed in Camphill’s name as the last paper has been signed. The fire-regulation requirements are being dealt with at the moment, as well as work on the verandas and drainage is being done ... and come the next dry spell we hope to have the exterior painted. N.B.: Rumour has it that the water from our bore-hole is of the holy kind. I have to disappoint many a reader that as much as you want to avail yourselves of our tested and wonderful clean water for drinking and cooking, so far no miracle has been associated with it ... ... and finally: should you be interested in a delightful account of our work switch on to TG4 in Irish with Tomas Ferriter being interviewed amongst others http://www.tg4.ie/en/player/home/?pid=4945398181001 24 West Kerry Live

Mindfull or Mindful? Anne Healy

‘The greatest gift you can give to your children is your full presence. We must begin with ourselves first’ Lisa Kring, LCSW and Mindfulness teacher As a parent no doubt your family life is demanding. As a consequence it is very easy to set your minds on ‘planning modus’ as you try to fit in all of the parenting tasks that face you each day. Parents have often told me that even before they get out of the bed on a Monday morning they are already thinking about Friday. Of course you have to plan the day, the week however in the doing of that you can support yourself by being emotionally present to yourself and your children. You will have your own unique style of parenting. However if you feel you would like to enhance your parenting skills I offer the following suggestions for you to consider. Neuroscientist Dan Siegel in his book ‘Parenting from the Inside Out’ says that the following approaches to parenting are founded on basic principles of internal understanding and interpersonal connection that support positive parenting. These approaches include mindfulness, lifelong learning, response flexibility, mindsight, and joyful living’. Lifelong learning is considered by Dr Siegel to ‘having the attitude that you can learn throughout your life enables you to approach parenting with an open mind, as a journey of discovery’. In relation to response flexibility he says that as a parent you have a choice about what are the parental approaches and values you use to support your child. Often parents tell me how upset they feel when they say or do something to their child that was said to them as a child. Of course they swore they would never say or do to this to their child. However we are all influenced by our own childhood and how we were parented. Therefore it is crucial to be reflective about how your responses can be fuelled by your own childhood stories. When you consider your own story in a deep way you can help build a more effective and enjoyable relationship with your children. Mindsight is the ability to be empathetic and be able to step into the shoes of your child to see things from their perspective. And joyful living as the term suggests is about finding time to enjoy the beauty and wonder of life. As poet Mary Oliver says in a line from her poem ‘The Summer 28 West Kerry Live

Day’ ‘Tell me, what is it your plan to do with your one wild and precious life’? This line always reminds me when I am not present to myself of the way time slips like sand through our fingers and how important it is to make time for that whom we love and what we love. Being Mindful ‘Mindful parenting involves keeping in mind what is truly important as you go about the activities of daily living with your children’, says mindfulness expert, Jon Kabat Zinn. It means being aware of the present moment, taking time to breathe and ask yourself ‘how am I feeling right now? When you are present to yourself then you are fully available to connect with your child in a heartfelt way. What greater gift could you possibly give to your children than your presence, your full acceptance of them, whoever they are, whatever they bring? Mindfulness is at the heart of loving parent- child relationship. When you are mindful, you live in the present moment and are aware of your own thoughts and feelings and also are open to those of your children. When you are being fully present as parents, when you are mindful, it enables your children to fully experience themselves in the moment. Children learn about themselves by the way you communicate with them. When you are preoccupied with the demands of life thinking of the past or worried about the future, you are physically present with your children but you are emotionally absent. Of course it is impossible to be present all of the time to your child. However they do need your presence during times when they call out to you in distress or when they are puzzled and at times when you the parent know that something is troubling them. At these times make the time to stop, look and listen as you are connecting interactions that shape your child’s brain and tells him or her that they are important. When you are mindful as a parent it means you have the intention to make the effort to stay present. Tara Brach a wonderful mindfulness teacher www.tarabarch.com talks about how we can live our life’s in a trance. We go about our daily lifes without really checking in how we are really feeling and reflecting on what we do and say. However with intention, you consider your response and how you feel and in doing so you help your child’s emotional well-being to thrive. Children are so perceptive and know when they are understood and taken seriously. We all did as children. Try to recall a time when you were really needing your mam or dad and they stopped everything and listened in contrast to a time when you really needed your parents to give you time and they said ‘not now, can’t you see I am busy’ To conclude it is difficult to be mindful and it will take a great deal of discipline on your part to lay down the phone, turn down the cooker to bend down and look your child in the eye and say yes ‘I am listening to you, what you have to say as it is important’. I recently heard of a mother who at the age of twenty nine got a very aggressive form of breast cancer. After successful treatment she said ‘I have no time to rush’! So when you

www.westkerrylive.ie

find your mind saying I have no time to listen or time to be mindful stop, breathe, think and consider and ask yourself the following question ‘Tell me, what is it your plan to do with your one wild and precious life’? And also ask ‘what is your plan for your child with his or her ‘one wild and precious life’? For courses on mindfulness check out www. kalyanacentre.com which is based in Dingle. Eva, the mindfulness teacher offers classes in Dingle, Milltown and Tralee. And if you have issues that get in the way of your parenting that are unresolved from your own childhood talk to your doctor about referring you to a good therapist. Anne Healy is a play therapist and parent adviser with over thirty years experience of working with children and families. 087 2486421 info@mindfulparentingadvice.ie www.mindfulparentingadvice.ie

Cé go mb’fhéidir ná fios don phobal mór é ach tá trí reilig sa Daingean, an seanatheampall sa tSráid Mhór, taobh le hEaglais Naomh Séamas, an teampall nua i mBaile an Mhuilinn agus an tríú ceann ar Chnoc a’Chairn lastuas den nDaingean, atá ann ó aimsir an Ghorta Mhóir, nó cúpla bliain ina dhiaidh. Ba sa cheann san a cuireadh na daoine bochta a cailleadh i dTig na mBocht, a bhí cóngarach dó. Osclaíodh Tig na mBocht an Daingin sa bhliain 1852, agus uair éigin ina dhiaidh san a tosnaíodh ag baint úsáide as an reilig san. Tá tamall fada ann anois ó cuireadh éinne ann. Deineadh obair athchóirithe ar Chnoc an Chairn le déanaí. Glanadh an teampall, tógadh carrchlós, cosán agus séipéilín ann agus ba iad An Mon. Pádraig Ó Fiannachta agus An tAthair Jim Mac an tSíthigh a stiúraigh an obair seo. Thanks to the great work carried out by a local group over the last couple of years, with the support Mons. Pádraig Ó Fiannachta and Fr Jim Sheehy, many are now aware that there are three cemeteries in Dingle town. These are: the graveyard surrounding St James’ Church on Main Street, which may date as far back as the 13th century, the ‘new’ cemetery at Milltown, St Brendan’s, and the third, which has recently been cleaned with new parking area, pathways and a small Famine Chapel put in place, situated on Cnoc a’Chairn, behind the old Dingle Hospital. This was the cemetery used for the deceased inmates of Dingle Workhouse, which was the first use of the building which subsequently became St Elizabeth’s Hospital, which is now lying idle. Dingle workhouse was opened in 1852, in response to the many needy families seeking assistance in the area from the time of the Great Famine, so it is safe to assume that it was sometime after this date that the graveyard was first used for burial. The workhouse was built initially to accommodate 700 people, but we can only imagine how many hundreds, if not thousands of people were buried in this small cemetery, particularly so as the workhouse was also used as a hospital for much of its early working life (as well as in its more recent history). There would have been many deaths here from various epidemics over the years, as well as the unfortunates who died from malnutrition – or general old age. There are no formal inscribed grave markers in the cemetery, as one would expect from a place where only the very poor and destitute were interred, but a stone commemorating all who were buried there was erected in more recent times. There have been no burials in this graveyard for many years, the last probably being of German airmen who died when their aeroplane crashed into Mount Brandon during the Second World War. The remains, however, were later moved to the German military cemetery in Glencree, Co. Wicklow.

TRY OUR WILD ATLANTIC PLATTER

Why not enjoy our soon to be famous •Seafood Platter • on our decking overlooking Dingle Harbour

Thanks to the recent work at the site, this graveyard, and the many people interred within it, will not be forgotten. Further information about this, and other historic places in Dingle and elsewhere on the peninsula, can be found in Músaem Chorca Dhuibhne, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh, www.westkerrymuseum.com. Parts Used; Seeds Family; Asteracea Some herbs are considered top of their class in their actions, for example, dandelion leaf as a diuretic and complementary potassium source, hawthorn as a tonic for the heart and milk thistle as a tonic for the liver. Milk thistle has been used for thousands of years as a liver protective and the whole plant, seed and root was used. In modern herbalism it is the seed that is used and clinical research shows that the seed not only protects the liver but can in fact regenerate damaged liver cells. Today milk thistle is indicated for a whole range of liver and gall bladder conditions, including hepatitis, cirrhosis and gallstones. The liver has a wide range of vital functions, metabolising proteins, carbohydrates and fats. In particular the liver is a detoxifier clearing the body of toxins from all modern daily stresses such as food borne and environmental toxins. For the liver to do its work efficiently it must of course be healthy. For example, while the liver has the ability to eliminate toxins efficiently and indeed even regenerate itself, this innate ability can be impaired or stop altogether when it is chronically infected or damaged by alcohol or other drugs. Early intervention can arrest and regenerate liver damage and serious diseases such as, hepatitis and cirrhosis can be treated effectively with milk thistle. Studies have also shown its extraordinary ability to protect the liver against life threatening poisons such as the death cap mushroom and while milk thistle can restore liver function impaired by disease it will also protect liver cells from potential damage. The liver will also detoxify many pharmacological drugs including over the counter medications such as pain killers, making this herb a must for people who need to take medication over the long-term. More recent research has shown that the herb can be used for people with type 2 diabetes and rosacea. Elevated iron levels can also be normalised with milk thistle so while this effect is good in cases of excess iron in the body it’s not so good if your iron levels are low. Unless you know you’ve got too much iron, it’s best not to take milk thistle with meals or at the same time as iron-containing supplements. Milk thistle can be used for liver, kidney and spleen congestion. It is a warming herb and can be used to stimulate circulation and dispel cold in the body. Those suffering from cold and weakness arising from low blood pressure will benefit from this herb. Milk thistle will also vitalise the blood reducing congestion particularly in the pelvic area moderating excessive bleeding in menorrhagia. The herb’s decongestant action will go towards relieving skin rashes, itchy skin and eczema. A poorly functioning liver can have other effects on everyday health, e.g. poor digestion, constipation low mood and digestive issues such as food intolerances. Some studies have shown that milk thistle can be effective against hay fever, food allergies and liver related melancholy. Milk thistle’s ability to protect and repair the liver is now undisputed with scientific research showing the herb’s ability to protect and repair the liver. It is a remarkable herb for all liver and gall bladder related problems and diseases. It is a safe herb and can be taken by children nursing mothers and in pregnancy. The herb can be taken as a general liver protective in smaller doses in the long-term and higher doses for therapeutic and restorative effects. Milk thistle is a very important liver stimulant and restorative both protecting and healing the liver. I give it 10 out of 10 for all liver related functions and conditions.

Keel Community came out in force to lend its support to Keel GAA’s pre-loved clothes boutique, pop up shop which took place from the 29th until the 31st of May in Keel Community Centre. The event was organised to raise funds for the Kerry Cancer Support Group, Kerry – Cork Health Link Bus. €3000 of the proceeds was donated to the KCSG. Volunteers offered up their time to transport, prepare, and price the clothing. There was a fantastic selection of clothing, with something for everyone - from wedding attire to children’s clothes, as well as other bric-a-brac. The presentation of the cheque was made to Breda Dyland (manager of KCSG) by Club Secretary Laura O'Shea, in Murphy’s Bar in Keel, on Sunday 5th of June. KCSG would like to thank Keel GAA for their generous donation, and to all those who gave up their time to make the event such a success.

Computer Matters The World Wide Web Joan Maguire The original vision for the world wide web(aka www or the web) was one of a place for sharing of information, expressing people’s talent and viewpoint and as an instrument for social change. It was open, not owned and free. Since the 90’s when it was first released it has changed the way most of us socialise, shop , do business, select travel destinations, get our news and communicate. The web, which most of use to view things on the Internet, is run by a programme, developed by Tim Berners-Lee. The programme was first invented to allow scientists in Cerne, Switzerland share data and information more effectively. The result of unleashing this wonderful technology on the world was something that has changed people’s lives fundamentally. “Unlike so many of the inventions that have moved the world, this one truly was the work of one man... the World Wide Web is BernersLee’s alone. He designed it. He loosed it on the world. And he more than anyone else has fought to keep it open, non-proprietary, and free... It’s hard to overstate the impact of the global system he created. It’s almost Gutenbergian. He took a powerful communications system that only the élite could use and turned it into a mass medium.” --Time Magazine WWW remains freely available to everyone. Profit driven corporations, charities , education centres, shops and community groups, to mention a few, all exist side by side on the world wide web with equal rights. An Internet Service Provider (ISP) provides access to the Internet, usually for a fee. The most common ways to connect to an ISP are by using a phone line (dial-up) or broadband connection (cable or DSL), mobile phone or satellite. Many ISPs provide additional services such as e‑mail accounts, web browsers, and space for you to create a website. The driving force behind the World Wide Web is the desire to make information available in an efficient manner to more people. There is no censoring on the Internet , there are no adult only areas, there are no police stations. There is no law or guiding hand, so, common sense is the best approach for you and your family. When children or teenagers are using the Internet they need to be guided by responsible adults who are aware of what they are accessing and can ensure that they have a ready ear to discuss concepts they encounter that they may not have the maturity to process. Humanity is capable of greatness, capable of constructing very beautiful things and capable of the most terrible crimes, to paraphrase philosopher John Moriarty(RIP). The world wide web allows all of humanity to sit together and be in touch. Joan Maguire runs Compucara in Dykegate Lane, Dingle. 066-9152222

Crossing the Channel Bert McCann If there is one thing that can be said about St. Columba of Iona, whose anniversary occurs this month,is that he was up for an argument. The saint would take on anybody—be they scholar or royalty. His belligerence, however, eventually got him into serious trouble. In the mid-sixth century, he undertook the task of copying a religious manuscript at Movilla Abbey, then controlled by St. Finnian. The latter laid claim to ownership of the copy and took it to the local high king, Diarmait mac Cerbaill, for arbitration. Diarmait found in his favour. Columba didn't take this well, and the battle of Cúl Dreimhnein ensued. In all 3,000 combatants were killed or wounded on the Sligo battlefield. Following this slaughter, which was possibly the first ever battle over a copyright dispute, Columba was held to have been responsible and threatened with excommunication by a jury of his peers. On reflection the ecclesiastical jurists permitted him to go into exile. So, he left his Donegal home and went to live on the island of Iona, located off the west coast of Scotland. Accepting his exile he vowed to become a missionary to Scotland and to convert to Christianity at least as many people as were slaughtered at Cúl Dreimhnein. Columba's episode was just the latest incident in a battle-hardened link between Ireland and Scotland which was forged in the the third century and had been reinforced by conflicts on both sides of the North Channel between Ireland and Scotland. Ewen J. Innes, in his essay on Scottish History.com, notes that as early as 297AD the tribe of Scoti, based in the Kingdom of Dal Riata on the Antrim coast had already started crossing the water to carry out raids on the Romans— then in occupation of the territory later to be called Scotland. Certainly by 312AD the Scoti tribe were recorded by name in an appendix to a list of Roman-dominated provinces, as a threat to the Empire. It is generally accepted that by the sixth century the Scoti had expanded the kingdom of Dál Riata into the western and north-western regions of Scotland and had settled there, bringing the Irish language with them. Irish was the spoken language throughout this realm until the eleventh century and was the literary language until probably the seventeenth century. The Celtic peoples had, through their entire history, been viewed as tough and extreme fighters when necessary though they preferred single combats between leaders rather than pitched battles to settle disputes. Cleopatra apparently had 10,000 Celtic mercenaries at her disposal. Xenophon, a disciple of Socrates, noted the Celtic mercenaries fighting for Sparta were great horsemen. In 1259 a new fighting force emerged from Dál Riata which led to a migration from the west of Scotland to Ireland. Prince Aed O'Connor of Connaught, son of King Feidhlim, married the daughter of Dubhgall MacRory, King of the Hebrides. As part of her dowry, she brought with her a force of 160 Gallowglasses. For the most part they were Hebridean Gaelic speakers who had cross-bred with Norse settlers. Because of their Viking blood they earned the name Gall (foreigner) which was coupled with Óglaigh (young warrior). So, a Gallowglass was a foreign warrior. These fighters were likely the descendants of the Antrim-based Celts who had carried out actions against the Romans in the third century.

Irish gallowglasses. Drawing by Albrecht Dürer, 1521. on-Shannon in 1270. When Edward Bruce, a descendant of Brian Boru, came to the aid of the King of Tyrone (whose lands were threatened by enemies from all points), he brought a large force of Gallowglasses. Irish nobility cleaved to these mercenaries who shared a language with them and possessed a similar cultural outlook. Every significant conflict in Ireland was attended by these fighters who, like their forefathers, were expert horsemen. In 1645, almost four hundred years after their crossing of the North Channel, they were involved in an attack on Mallow, Co. Cork, supporting the interests of the Mac Cárthaigh Riabach dynasty. As the generations of Gallowglasses became absorbed into every strata of Irish society, including the nobility, they established a place in the history and memory of the nation. So when you encounter a member of the Sweeney, McDonnell, Mc Cabe, O’ Gallagher, O’ Boyle or Campbell clan, perhaps you could tip your hat to the descendants of those who crossed and recrossed the North Channel and impressed themselves onto the heritage of two Celtic nations

By all accounts these Hebrideans were a fearsome bunch. In pre-gunpowder conflict they were noted for wielding the two handed Sparthe axe and broadsword or claíomh mór. For armour, the gallowglasses wore chain mail shirts over padded jackets, and iron helmets. A far cry from their ancient ancestors who often preferred to go into battle naked, carrying only javelins. An Irish Archeological Society tract dated 1843 quotes a seventeenth century source as declaring that they were, ‘[…] pycked and selected men of great and mightie bodies, crewell without compassion. The greatest force of the battell consisteth in them, chosing rather to dye than to yeelde, so that when cometh to handy blowes they are quickly slayne or win the fielde.' Their military influence was significant. They curtailed the Anglo-Norman invasion when they soundly defeated a Norman army at Carrick-

Milltown Castlemaine GAA Sympathy: Our club extends sympathy to Denis Riordan, Clounmore on the death of his brother Tim. Following Requiem mass in Milltown on Monday, Tim was laid to rest. The club also extends sympathy to the family of William O’Reilly, Killorglin who died on Sunday last. William was a Geography and Art teacher in Presentation Secondary School, Milltown for many years. May you both rest in the eternal peace of heaven. Féile 2016: Excitement is really building at our club and so is the need to recruit parents to help out with the busy schedule on Friday evening June 24 th (5-8) and Saturday 25th (1.30-5) at our GAA Grounds. If you could give some of your time with either stewarding, maintaining bathrooms and clubrooms, serving teas, coffees /making sandwiches or selling lotto tickets, we would be most grateful. Any donations of home baking would be very welcome too. On the Saturday- we will have at least ten other teams and their followers from all over the country and Philadelphia converging on our club. Let's all get together and show them what a great community we are! Thanking you in advance. Contact Deirdre on 086/1703332 if you are available. Under 14’S: Well done to the Under 14's who beat Ballymac comprehensively recently, in the Under 14 Central Region 1st round. In Round 2, they had an equally super victory over St. Pat's, Blennerville. The boys made a brilliant second half comeback -to gain a valuable 2 points. Well done to all involved- especially your trainers and your parents.

nerhassett- much to the relief of the home side. Kilcummin registered the next point- again from Kevin Mc Carthy who had a super game. He added another just on the stroke of half time to leave the score at 7 points to MC, 5 points to Kilcummin at the short whistle. Kilcummin began the second half with a point from Richie O' Connor. Jonathan O' Sullivan got back on the scoresheet in the 8 th minute with an excellent pointed free-however, Kilcummin cancelled it out with a point from Mikey O' Shea. MC's corner forward Jonathan O'Sullivan added 3 more pointed frees before Kilcummin added a point from Niall Duggan in the 21st minute -their last score being in the 9 th minute. Heading into the final quarter, there was just 3 points between the teams with MC having the advantage. Eoin O' Mahony replaced Ciarán Kelliher -who grafted hard on the half forward line. Kilcummin managed 1 further point from John Devane. Despite serious pressure from Kilcummin, our backs particularly Stephen Roche, played their hearts out and stood strong. Cathal Moriarty did have a goal chance in the 27 th minute but the Kilcummin keeper- Michael O Neill, gathered it to safety. The woes of Kilcummin were further added to-when Chris Keane received a straight red for an off the ball strike on Jonathan O' Sullivan. The game ended on a score line of MC-11 points: Kilcummin- 9 points.

Under 12'S: Lee Strand Div. 2A and 2B We had our final County League game of the year away to Austin Stacks recently. Our Greens had a good win while our whites were defeated by a stronger Austin Stacks. The win for the Green team means they finish joint top of the division. We still have plenty of games remaining with the Kelliher's Toyota Tralee- Central Region and the Mid Kerry Leagues. County League- Division 1: Milltown Castlemaine versus Kilcummin. Milltown Castlemaine began the game on home soil, without some of their regular players due to work and exam commitments, but had John Blennerhassett back in defence, following a recent injury. The home venue certainly suited MC who were quickly out of the blocks with 3 points in the first few minutes-one courtesy of Shane Murphy and two from Jonathan O' Sullivan (1 from free). It took Kilcummin until the 7 th minute to register their first score - a point from a free by Kevin McCarthy. Both teams exchanged points in the next few minutes with a converted free by Jonathan for MC and Shane McSweeney finished off a great move to point for Kilcummin. Despite Kilcummin's efforts to dominate at centre field, it was the home side -through great work from Donal Kelliher, Jeremiah Hayes and Eoin O' Brien, that eventually created MC's next score, with a pointed free from corner forward Jonathan O' Sullivan. This gave a score of 5 points to 2 points after 15 minutes. MC's next score came once again off a free from Jonathan O' Sullivan. Kilcummin popped over a point off the boot of Kevin McCarthy shortly after. Mike Burke was replaced by Cathal O' Connor, for a black card and quickly got into the action. Kilcummin continued their super fielding at centre field but MC maintained a strong defence and were able to turn the ball over once again. This led to a great point from Cathal Moriarty, who was making his debut after recent major knee surgery. Kilcummin always looked threatening and a great move between Gavin O' Connor and Kevin McCarthy was intercepted by John Blen-

South Kerry Development Partnership Ltd. Welcomes Greenway Maintenance Scheme

The decision by Kerry County Council to put a maintenance scheme in place to provide payments to landowners to undertake maintenance work along the proposed South Kerry Greenway has been welcomed by South Kerry Development Partnership Ltd. (SKDP). The proposed scheme, which will be administered by SKDP, will see landowners along the route securing a minimum payment of €300 a year with an additional €2 per meter of greenway they will maintain. It is estimated that the average payment to landowners will be in the region of €600 a year. The work will include strimming, keeping the route free of litter and ensuring gates are kept closed to ensure animals do not cause a hazard on the route. Landowners will also inspect the route and maintain fencing, gates and trail furniture regularly to ensure they are not damaged so as to help ensure the greenway is maintained to the highest standards. Speaking after the announcement of the maintenance scheme, SKDP CEO Noel Spillane said that he was delighted that it had been put in place. “This is something we would have favoured and recommended from the outset of this proposed project in order to help deliver economic benefit from it directly to the landowners” Noel said. “We already administer a similar scheme along the Kerry Way and part of the Beara Way and it has proven to be hugely beneficial in terms of both ensuring the walking trails are maintained to the highest standards possible but in also helping deliver a direct economic benefit to the landowners who maintain the routes. Just over 170 landowners could benefit from the new maintenance scheme but Noel Spillane pointed out that it will operate on a voluntary basis and there is no obligation on the landowners to sign up for it. “If they choose not to participate then SKDP will undertake the work on those sections instead” he said pointing out that Kerry County Council will have responsibility for all structural related work and replacement of fencing and trail furniture along the proposed route if required. “All participating landowners will be provided with training and the necessary materials to undertake the maintenance of the route and will be fully covered by insurance. Every effort will be made by SKDP to keep the maintenance scheme as farm friendly as possible” Noel noted. He also appealed to those landowners opposed to the CPO process to reconsider their position in view of the proposed maintenance scheme and also given the economic importance of the project to the South Kerry area. ‘A thorough consultation process by Kerry County Council, supported by SKDP failed to secure the agreement of all landowners required so unfortunately Kerry County Council have no alternative but to proceed with the CPO process if the Greenway is to proceed ‘ Noel concluded. 38 West Kerry Live

West Kerry Cyclist goes A1 Ciarán Slattery began cycling with Cumann Rothaíochta Chorca Dhuibhne (Dingle Cycling Club) and started his racing career in late July last year. His progress since then can only be described as meteoric. In his second outing he won a Kerry county league race in Tralee which developed in him a hunger for racing, and shortly afterwards he joined Team ibike in Tralee. He then followed that up with a few results in dedicated A4 races throughout Munster in August. Then in September he made the breakthrough to the next level, A3, when he took second position in overall General Classification in the Charleville 3 day race. This year cycling at A3 level his progress has continued where he left off with a 2nd place finish in Rás Laois, followed by 5th in Coachford classic, 5th in the Drumm Cup in Currow and 5th in the Carlow GP, which moved him up to A2. Last week in what was only his third race at A2 level he was just beaten into 2nd place by a wheel in Roundwood GP in Wicklow which secured him enough points to move him up to the elite A1 level. A1 racing has the 250 top amateur/ semi-pro cyclists in the country and also includes Micheál O Sé from Killorglin Cycling club and is the highest grade available before turning proffesional. To get to the highest level in amateur cycling in less then a year of racing is a great achievement for the Baile an Rannaigh man but he is not fazed by the challenge as he said when he met up with West & Mid Kerry Live recently "Hopefully there’s much more to come, although with every grade the racing gets harder as you are competing against seasoned cyclists with serious horsepower. I would like say a big thanks to all in Tralee BC Ibike and Peter White who provide fantastic support for anyone interested in racing and of course Dingle Cycling Club who organise great cycling events and weekly spins and is great way for anyone interested in cycling to get started”.

Annascaul Notes Noel Spillane Congratulations Well done to our very own Jamie Finn (Annascaul) who was selected as one of the escorts for the Rose of Tralee 2016. Jamie is currently studying in Limerick university and knowing him he will do Annascaul proud. Keep an eye out on the T.V. for Jamie. A Voice for Hannah. A Family in Annascaul is undertaking a major fund-raising initiative to raise money to help their little daughter Hannah to be able to communicate with her family. Hannah Falvey is a 2 ½ years old girl with a very rare condition called Rett Syndrome, a complex genetic disorder that affects mainly girls which makes her unable to communicate with anybody. Some of the syndrome’s most common features are non-verbal communication, scoliosis, epilepsy, motor function difficulties, stereotypical hand movement as well as difficulties with swallowing and chewing. Hannah lives with her family in Annascaul – her parents Nancy and Brendan and her sister Lily. With the help of an eye-gaze computer called Tobii she will be able to communicate with her family. The Falveys have undertaken the task of raising funds to be able to buy this specialised technology with an expensive price tag of €12,000. Tobii produces touch-based and eye-controlled computers that help individuals with motor and speech impairments lead richer and more independent lives. Hannah has been tested for the technology and has been declared to be a perfect candidate for this new technology and has been assured that her quality of life will greatly improve because of it. As Hannah will never be able to talk or use her hands for sign language, this type of communication will be her future language. In order to master the eye gazing skill, it is necessary to start from a young age, and so it is vital to her development. The only limitations on the Falvey family now of course are financial. And this is why they have set up ‘A Voice for Hannah’ appeal in the Go Fund Me page. The fundraising initiative revolves around a 70km walk that will be undertaken by two good friends of the family on Friday 12th August 2016 from Castlemaine to Brandon Point. They will walk the length of the Slieve Mish mountains running along the middle of the Dingle Peninsula and will climb all the mountains along the way, including Mount Brandon. Groin Pain Eddie O’ Grady The evaluation and treatment of groin pain in athletes can be very challenging at times. Multiple pathologies sometimes coexist, causing similar symptoms. Many athletes with longstanding groin pain have usually tried prolonged rest, various treatment regimens, and have received several differing professional opinions regarding the cause of their pain. They are also often given a nonspecific diagnosis of “groin pain” or “anterior hip pain”. The problem is that the cause of this type of pain can be as simple as a tight iliopsoas (which may just require stretching) or as complex as athletic pubalgia. Athletic Pubalgia (sports hernia) is defined as an injury in the area where the rectus abdominis inserts onto the pubic symphysis. It is often accompanied by injury to the conjoined tendon insertion, the adductor longus attachment to the pelvis (Am J Sports Med. 2001;29(4):521-533). The symptoms of athletic pubalgia are characterized by pain during movement—particularly, twisting and turning during a single-limb stance on the affected side. The pain usually radiates into the adductor muscle region and its origin, sometimes even to the testicles. Often the exact area of pain is difficult for the patient to pinpoint. Following sports activity, the athlete may feel stiff and sore. Athletic pubalgia is a common cause of chronic groin pain in athletes. Despite several reports of athletic pubalgia in women, it is almost exclusively found in men. Clinical diagnosis is usually made by exclusion of other conditions, along with a history of chronic groin pain that has been nonresponsive to treatment. Physical examination findings are subtle, and most tests do not definitively confirm the diagnosis. Non-operative treatment of athletic pubalgia rarely result in a resolution of symptoms. Surgical intervention, however, usually results in a pain-free return to full activity (Br J Sports Med. 2005;39(4):212-216). Adductor strain: The adductors of the hip joint include 6 muscles: the adductor longus, adductor magnus, adductor brevis, gracilis, obturator externus, and pectineus, on each leg. The primary function of this muscle group is to adduct the thigh in open chain motions and stabilize the lower extremity and pelvis during closed chain movements. The adductor longus is the most common of these muscles to be injured during sporting activity. Lack of adductor muscle strength has often been linked to the incidence of adductor muscle strains (Am J Sports Med. 2001;29(2):124-128). Strengthening and flexibility programs targeted at the adductors can certainly reduce the incidence of adductor muscle strains and injury (Am J Sports Med. 2002;30(5):680-683). Adductor strains can usually be treated successfully with proper physio and rehab. Effective treatments include; proper deep tissue work, electro-acupuncture, stretching and strengthening programs. A thorough history, clinical examination, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), bone scan, and radiograph can be useful in differentiating groin strain(adductor strain) from other conditions including but not limited to; athletic pubalgia, osteitis pubis, hernia, hip flexor strain, intraarticular hip abnormalities, rectal or testicular referred pain, lumbar disc pathology, a fracture of the pelvis etc.

Saffron – the Yellow, Mellow Elixir for the Mind Irene Ní Fhlannúra

jects were exposed to the aroma of saffron for 20 minutes – about half the time it takes to make a Spanish Paella, so lean over that pan and inhale! Research into PMS also noted that supplementation of 30mg saffron daily over three menstrual cycles reduced symptoms by more than half in 76% of the female subjects studied. Most participants saw great improvements in mood, cravings, insomnia and appetite. Viridian Nutrition, a leading brand of ethical supplements have recently launched a Magnesium, B6 and Saffron complex for PMS which may also help alleviate cramping, breast tenderness and pain associated with the monthly cycle. A word of caution for women – do not take supplemental saffron in pregnancy as high dosage may induce labour or cause bleeding. Saffron in its food state, used correctly in recipes poses no harm to pregnant women. Much like the turmeric, research into the benefits of saffron is on-going and so far has proven to offer great hope to many. On-going research is examining its anti-cancer effects as well as its use for age-related macular disease, asthma and respiratory disease.

Saffron has enjoyed some time under the microscope recently and researchers revealed the science behind the folklore and medicinal use of the World’s most expensive spice. These studies can finally validate some of the oldest medical texts which have documented the use of saffron as medicine going back thousands of years. Even before Hippocrates and Galens wrote about saffron around 480BC, the Arabs had it all chalked down in the Islamic Traditional Medicine (ITM) tomes many centuries before them. Not surprising though, as saffron has a long history in Persian culture, cuisine and medicine. Today, Iran (formerly known as Persia) produces 90% of the total global supply of saffron and is regarded as the best quality in terms of aroma, flavour and potency as a medicinal agent. Other countries, now producing saffron include Spain, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Britain and Greece but its origins remain in Middle Eastern lands and lore.

Saffron spice is usually sold as strands (or threads) and is better than its powdered form. It is red in colour but imparts a golden yellow hue to dishes. Thankfully, you only need a few threads of saffron in any dish – a paella for 8 people will use about a quarter gram (roughly 12 threads). Saffron is not the kind of spice where a bit more is better – too much saffron can leave a bitter taste and murky colour so stick to the recipes! Throughout history saffron has been revered and used in food preparation, as a fabric dye, in perfumes, in religious rituals as well as a medicine. The many references in Islamic Traditional Medicine describe its use in the treatment of a wide range of ailments such as depression, anxiety, cancer, asthma, cardiovascular disease, eye disease and urogenital disorders. Women’s health issues have been well-documented too as it showed an oxytocin-like effect and helped facilitate difficult labours and helped speed the delivery of the placenta after childbirth. Also used for irregular periods and PMS. Similar uses for saffron are seen across other traditional medicine practices from China, India and Europe. Today, science has uncovered the therapeutic use of saffron in many of the above disorders, evaluated optimum dosage and standardized extracts to maximise its use as a modern medicine. Saffron comes from a cultivated, perennial crocus, known as Crocus Sativus. The sowing takes place in the months of June and July. This has to be done by hand and the sower must walk in a bent position for the length of each ridge. The harvest is ready between the end of October and beginning of November. During this short window, the blooms are picked between dawn and 10am to preserve the colour and aroma of the stigmas. Once the flowers are gathered, stigmas are separated and dried. Each bloom has only 3-4 stigmas and it takes about 85,000 flowers to yield one kilo of saffron. It’s no wonder that it retails in the shops for around €15 per gram! Spud growers, stop your whinging! One of the most well-known effects of saffron is its exhilarant and antidepressant activity which, according to ITM, leads to the sense of happiness and laughter. Once attributed to its flavour and fragrance, modern scientific evidence has identified a potent carotenoid, known as crocin which is the main active constituent. The positive effects of saffron in the improvement of depression symptoms have been confirmed by both animal and clinical data and a daily dosage of 30mg saffron (stigmas and petals) are comparable to those of standard drugs such as imipramine and fluoxetine – commonly prescribed anti-depressants. Crocin has been shown to have positive effects on serotonin levels in mild to moderate depression and has also shown benefit to those who overeat, most likely due to the link between serotonin and appetite.

Anso is Ansúd i gCorca Dhuibhne An Ghaelainn i gcéin An gcualaís mar gheall ar fhear Cheann Trá a chuaigh isteach ‘on nDaingean ag triall ar shlisín mairteola agus a thóg oiread san ama ag filleadh abhaile aríst gur baisteadh ‘Vancouver’ air? Mhair sé mar leasainm air as san amach. Gan dabht, is fada ó bhaile atá Vancouver in Iarthar Cheanada, áit ar chuir Fondúireacht Ollscoile Éireann agus Ceanada nó an ICUF mé i mí Feabhra le go dtomhaisfinn cén t-éileamh atá ag an bpobal Gaelach agus pobail eile nach é ar an nGaelainn sa chathair sin. Eagraíocht chultúrtha is ea an ICUF dar ndó a chothaíonn naisc idir Ceanada agus an tír seo againne, agus ceann dos na cúraimí a bhíonn ar láimh aici ná An Clár Gaeilge a chuireann maoiniú ar fáil gach bliain do suas le seachtar teagascóirí Gaelainne in ollscoileanna ar fud Cheanada. Tá pobal na Gaelainne i gCeanada anois ag prapáil d’Oireachtas Cheanada a bheidh ar siúl i dtreo dheireadh mhí an Mheithimh, agus éinne a bhfuil sé sa cheann aige a bheith ar mhór-roinn Mheiriceá Thuaidh taca an ama san nó aon am eile, moltar dóibh geábh a thabhairt ar Ghaeltacht Bhaile na hÉireann (Erinsville) in Ontario!

Fágadh slán ag an mbreis is tríocha mac léinn ósna hollscoileanna thuasluaite i Meiriceá sa Lárionad Gaeilge & Gaeltachta ar an 10ú Meitheamh 2016. Gabhann Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne buíochas leis an nDr. Traolach Ó Ríordáin, Montana, an Dr. Jennifer Ní Ríordáin, Ollscoil Chaitliceach Washington agus le Garth Lambson, Idaho a chuir na mic léinn seo inár dtreo. Is í seo an ceathrú bliain den dtogra seo atá ag dul ó neart go neart ón gcéad lá ó thaobh spéise agus líon na mac léinn atá ag freastal ar an gclár. Gabaimid buíochas chomh maith le teagscóirí an chúrsa, leis na haoichainteoirí, le lucht lóistín agus le pobal na háite a chuir oiread fáilte roimis na mic léinn. Comhartha ómóis dá n-oidhreacht Ghaelach an turas seo ag mórán mac léinn chomh maith le ana-shampla den dturasóireacht chultúrtha i gceantar Chorca Dhuibhne. Lóistín i mBaile an Fheirtéaraigh Má tá seomra/seomraí/tigh saoire le ligean ar cíos i gceantar Bhaile an Fheirtéaraigh idir an 7ú-14ú Lúnasa tar i dteagmháil le Máire nó le Caitríona in oifig Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne ag 066 9156100 nó ag eolas@cfcd.ie., le do/bhur dtoil.

Is é Ollscoil Oileán an Phrionsa Éadbhard an ollscoil is déanaí a chuaigh i bpáirt leis an ICUF, agus a bhuíochas san le hEoin Ó Beaglaoich Bhaile na bPoc a dhein éacht thall i rith na tréimhse a chaitheas-sa i Vancouver. Is é an fear céanna a chuirfidh tús le ranganna Gaelainne san ollscoil sin mí Mheán Fómhair seo chughainn. In Oirthear Cheanada atá na hinstiúidí Ceanadacha ar fad a bhfuil baint acu leis an ICUF, ach ní bréag a rá go bhfuil an cultúr Gaelach leata chomh fada le Cósta an Aigéin Chiúin chomh maith. Is ann do phobal bríomhar Gaelach in Vancouver Cholóim na Breataine, agus ba léir sin i rith na sé seachtaine dom ann. Chuir idir bhunscoileanna agus mheánscoileanna, Fhranc-choláistí agus eile fáilte roimh mo chuid seisiún eolais ar an nGaelainn agus a mbaineann de chultúr léi. Ba í an bhuaic ar fad, is dóigh liom, ná curfá An Madairín Rua a mhúineadh do leanaí sé bliana d’aois i mbunscoil lán-Fhraincise ar Killarney Street, agus iad á chanadh le fonn i mo theannta. Is ann a chuireas aithne, leis, ar an Dochtúir Scott Oser, fisiceoir a bhfuil sé de cháil air gurb é an saineolaí is mó ar domhan é ar cheist an ábhair dhorcha. Ábhar taighde eile dó is ea Gaelainn Chorca Dhuibhne, canúint a thagann go binn le caint an fhir seo arb as Chicago dó an chéad lá. Iarscoláire eile de chuid Oidhreacht Chorca Dhuibhne é Mike Kelly ó Thuaisceart Chiarraí a éistíonn leis an Saol ó Dheas gach aon lá agus a thagann abhaile ó Vancouver chughainn go fóill ainneoin go bhfuil os cionn caoga bliain caite anois aige i gCeanada. Chuirfeadh a leithéidí an-fháilte roimh theagascóir Gaeilge de chuid an ICUF; tá sé de chuma ar an scéal gur sa chéad bhliain eile a bhainfear Vancouver amach, ach tá an páipéarachas sin fós á phlé. - Seaghan Mac an tSionnaigh, Meitheamh 2016 Mic léinn ó Ollscoileanna in Montana, Idaho & Washington i gCorca Dhuibhne

Ó Mhárthain. Breandán Mac Gearailt Ní fhaca oiread cainte agus moladh i nuachtáin lem chuimhne agus a bhí ar Cassius Clay /Muhammad Ali, tréis a bháis. Cinnte fear mór i gcúrsaí spóirt agus cothromaíochta b’ea é agus is diail mar a chuaidh sé i bhfeidhm ar dhaoine. Saolaíodh Ali sa bhliain 1942 i Louisville Kentucky. Sa bhliain 1960 bhuaidh sé bonn óir Oilimpeach dornála trom mheáchana [éadrom]. Iontas na n-iontas, bhuaidh sé ar Sonny Liston sa bhliain 1964 agus ghlac sé an ainm Muhammad Ali in ionad Cassius Clay. I mbabhta sa bhliain 1965 leag sé amach Liston sa chéad neomad. Sa bhliain 1967 bheartaigh sé gan dul isteach in arm Mheiriceá mar nár aontaigh sé le ‘Cogadh Vietnam’. Cuireadh an dlí air agus fuaireadh ciontach é agus baineadh a ghradam dó, ach fuair an Árd Chúirt neam-chiontach é sa bhliain 197I. Tréis trí mbliana bhuaidh sé Craobh an Domhain arís nuair a bhuaidh sé ar Jerry Quarry. Chaill sé in aghaidh Joe Frazer sa bhliain 1971. Sa bhliain 1972 bhuaidh sé ar Al ‘Blue’ Lewis i bPáirc an Chrócaigh i dtroid 11 babhta go raibh 25,000 i láthair. Bhuaidh sé ar Frazer sa bhlian 1974 i Madison Square Garden. An bhliain chéanna bhuaidh sé ar George Foreman, b’shin é an ‘Rumble in The Jungle’. Duirt sé go raibh sé ag scor sa bhliain 1975, ach ar ais leis agus bhuaidh sé ar Joe Frazer i ‘Triller in Manila’. Bhí an ‘chrios/bheilt ar ais aige arís. D’éirigh sé as an tríu uair sa bhliain 1979 agus sa bhliain 1981 bhuaidh Trevor Berbick air, b’shin a throid ddeireannach. Mar eolas throid sé seasca haon babtha dornalaíochta gairmiúil. Leag sé amach 37 duine, bhuaidh sé 19 eile. Chaill sé cheithre cinn. Mheasas gur fhiú an t-eolas gan chrích seo a bheith agat. Glac leis nár chaill ‘Rocky’ Marciano aon bhabhta mar churadh trom mheáchana riamh. Bhí fear ó Chorcaigh i meachain níos eadroime, [Lightweight] Mike Mac Amhlaoibh is dóigh liom, agus ní buadh riamh air. Bhí sé ina churadh Domhanda ar feadh aon bhlain déag. Fág fés na Corcaígh é. CLG Táim dá rá leat ach go bhfuil cúrsaí caide agus iomána éirithe chugainn le deireannas. Bhí iontas an tsaoil ar chách nuair a ghaibh Tiobrad Arann ag Chorcaigh. Dúradh go raibh Corcaigh imithe chun donais. Ní aontaím leis sin. Ta éirithe go diail le mionúir agus fóirne fé 21 Thiobrad Árann le blianta beaga. Déarfainn ná raibh aon tuairim ag na Corcaígh go rabhadar chomh maith. Deirim-se leat go gcuirfidh na Corcaíg eagla amach sna babhtaí cáilithe. Ní amháin san, ach tá an Ghaillimh ar ais agus baineadh leathadh as radharc scata nuair a bhuadar ar Mhaigh Eó. Ní raibh aon tsúíl ag Maigh Eó leo. Dia leo siúd a bheith ag bualadh le Maigh Eó sa dara babhtaí. Ná fuil aiséirí An Phoenix déanta ag an gCabhán. Tá béim acu le blainta beaga ar fhóirne fé aois. Pé acu iad féin nó Tír Eghain a bheidh sna cluichí cáilithe beidh níos mó ná allas ortha siúd a bhuailfdh leo. An cheist ná réiteódh beirt ná cé a bhuafaidh ar Bhléa Claith? San iomáint ní chím aon fhoireann a chuirfidh an ‘Chaidhp Bháis’, ar Chill Choinnigh. Déarfar Port Láirge. Cé go bhfuil na Déisigh feabhsaithe go mór, is leath mhíorúilt é, dá mbuafadh siad ar ‘Na Cait.’ Dá mbuailfeadh an taom ceart Gaillimh ní bheadh aon bheann acu ar ‘Na Cait’, ach is ró mhinic a thárlaíonn san. Tiobradh Árann. De bharr gur foireann láidir do fhír mhór scafanta scata acu, bhaineadh siad bar-thuisle as Chill Chainnigh ar a seans. Ach níl ann ach seans beag bídeach. Mar sin mo thuar ná Cill Chainnigh agus Bleá Cliath a thabharfaidh an ‘scué’, leo Meán Fhómhair seo chughainn. Fadhb eile tá dearmad á dhéanamh ar na clubanna. Má tá aon bhall do fhóirne na gclubanna ar na fóirne contae níl fáil ag na clubanna ortha, ‘sé sin mura mbuatar, ar na fóirne contae.Tá sé sean-chloiste againn gur é an club foinse dóchais CLG, ach is léir gur beag an áird a tugtar ar na chlubanna, ní i gCiarraí amháin. Ná fuil sé in am an cúram seo a réiteach chomh luath agus is féidir. Gaolainn. Bhí fear ar na meáin áitiúla le déanaí agus é ag cnáimhseáil ná raibh focal Gaolainne le clos aige sa cheantar. Measaim go raibh furmhór a ghearáin bunaithe sa Daingean. N’fheadar cad deirim leis. Dúirt sé gur labhair sé Gaolainn agus gur freagraíodh i mBéarla é. Go macánta is deacair liom géilleadh dhó. Bhí liosta siopaithe etc a dheineas amach im cheann agus bhí scata áit sa Daingean go bhféadfadh duine a ghnó a dhéanamh trí Ghaolainn agus más cead dom é rá, is ag feabhsú atá an cúram.Tás agat go bhfuil coiste bunaithe ins gach Gaeltacht agus gur 48 West Kerry Live

é an toradh ginearálta a bheidh ar an obair thar bhlianta, go gcaithfear amach as an nGaeltacht na háiteanna ná fuil aon iarracht á dhéanamh. Dar liom féin go bhfuil blas maith na Gaolainne ag an gceantar seo, beagán dó ón gcliabhán agus mórán ón scoil.Tátar ag súil go mbeidh a mbeartas féin á dhéanamh ag gach eagraíocht sa cheantar. Más féidir le Bleá Cliath fóirne caide a chur ar an bhfód agus Gaolainn mar theanga coitianta acu agus go bhfuil Gaeltacht eile á bunú i nDoire, ba chóir go mba abhar misnigh é. Ba cheart Gaolainn agus Béarla, fara teanga Éorpach bheith ag gach duine atá ag dul chun na scoile i saol an lae inniu. Tá aithne agam ar ghnónna agus daoine in iarthar an Leitriúgh agus ó Abha na Scáil go Dún Chaoin, atá ag déanamh a gcion féin i ngan fhios don saol. Ní aon ualach do dhuine a theanga dhúchais. Ba chóir liosta a dhéanamh agus a bheadh ar fáil dos na ‘Turasóirí Gaeilge’, a bhíonn ar thóir na teanga, dos na tithe nó gnónna gur féidir gnó a dhéanamh leo trí Ghaolainn [agus ba chóir seans a thabhairt do dhreamanna eile a bheith ar an liosta san, i gcaitheamh na haimsire.] Is mó duine ná fuil an teanga acu agus gan aon leigheas acu air. Ba cheart cabhrú le daoine go bhfuil suim acu feabhas a chur ar a gcuid Gaolainne agus níor chóir do chainteoirí dúchais, Gaolainn a cheilt ar a gclann. Tás agam go bhfuil an dea-ghníomh á dhéanamh, ach ní aon díobháil cabhrú agus misniú a dhéanamh ar dhaoine, go réidh. Mar a dúirt an saoi, Séamus Heaney, ‘Not to learn Irish is to miss the opportuinity of understanding what life in this country has meant’……we should remember that a knowledge of the Irish Language is an essential element ….

Felicity Hayes-McCoy ‘The protagonist of my latest book is a local librarian called Hanna Casey and I’ve created a fictional county for her to live in. It’s on the south west coast - say somewhere between Cork, Kerry and Clare - Wild Atlantic Way country where the stunning scenery brings hosts of summer holidaymakers and the local council is bent on keeping the tourist numbers up. We’re talking feelgood summer reading here, so Hanna starts out as a sad divorcee living in the back bedroom of her monstrous mother’s retirement bungalow, and ends up independent, re-empowered and reinvigorated, taking her time before taking the plunge into an affair with a younger man.

WEDNESDAY 13th July 10th August

So far, so fictional. But as well as writing what in effect is pastoral comedy, I wanted to explore the realities of contemporary rural Irish life...’ - Felicity Hayes-McCoy You are invited to An Café Liteartha at 4.00pm Friday June 24 when Felicity will be reading from her new novel.

Cohabiting and social welfare payments Question I have applied for a means-tested Jobseeker’s Allowance but I was told that I’m not eligible because of my live-in partner’s earnings. We live together but we are not married and we split our expenses equally. Why is this? Answer The Department of Social Protection (DSP) treats married and unmarried couples in the same way when assessing entitlement to a means-tested social welfare payment. It assesses the total income of the household, rather than the circumstances of the individual claimant.

Allowance, Disability Allowance, and Farm Assist, the DSP adds all your combined means together and then assesses them against the maximum household payment for your circumstances. If your spouse or partner is getting a social welfare payment in their own right, your means are taken to be half of the total means of yourself and your spouse or partner.

Sometimes a certain amount of income, or income from particular sources, is not taken into account. This is called an income disregard. For example, a certain amount of income from employment can be disregarded.

This means that if you are married, or are living with another person in an intimate and committed relationship, the means of your spouse or partner are also taken into account. This is the case even if only one of you is actually claiming a payment. The DSP uses detailed definitions and criteria to assess whether a couple are cohabiting and you can read these online at welfare.ie. How the means of a couple are assessed differs slightly depending on the payment being applied for. For Blind Pension, State Pension (Non-Contributory) and Carer’s Allowance, the DSP adds all of your means together and then halves them to get the assessable means for each one of you.
