Dingle Men’s Shed

The Dingle Men’s Shed are back in business at Ballintaggart on Tuesday and Thursday evenings so this evening the fire will be lit and the kettle boiled as we discuss future plans.

Please come along and bring a friend who might be interested. We had a lovely outing at the Famine Graveyard last Saturday 2nd of November. Fr. Jim celebrated Mass for the Holy Souls to remember our ancestors buried there from the 1850's right up to the 1980's. Poor people were buried here without shroud or coffin. It stands as a testament to difficult and desperate times in Dingle and today we enjoy a life created by the sacrifices of our ancestors.

A special thanks to Mike and Lorcan for some excellent music. We ended our visit to Cnoc a Chairn with a heart-warming rendition of "When the Saints go marching in."

An Introduction to Stone Carving with International sculptor Ben Dearnley

Ever wanted to carve stone and try one of Mankind’s most ancient artistic expressions?

For millennia, humans have made their marks in stone caves across the world, trying to capture something of the moment in history that they were living in. It is the same now for artists like Ben who create their works in stone as a way to capture this moment in time that we are all living in now.

Ben says, “Why not come along to the Men’s Shed this winter and try your hand at carving stone. I will guide each of those joining me, something of the art of carving stone. And collectively we shall create a unique ‘Men’s Shed’ piece of stone sculpture. If you just want to come a say hello and have a cup of tea with us and see what’s going on then please do that too. You will be greeted with a warm and friendly welcome whatever activity you chose to join in with. After all, the Shed is there for you.”

One for the Boys: A Fresh Look at Prostate Health for Movember

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer to affect men worldwide, following lung cancer. In Ireland, one in eight men will face this diagnosis during their lifetime. Despite its prevalence, discussions about prostate health often take a backseat to other health concerns. Movember, with its iconic moustaches, provides an opportunity to spark those essential conversations and encourage men to take proactive steps for their health.

The prostate gland, often overlooked until problems arise, is part of the male reproductive system, producing the fluid that nourishes and transports sperm. Yet, as men age, this small walnut-shaped organ can grow unwieldy, leading to benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) or, more seriously, prostate cancer. Both conditions can cause similar symptoms—frequent urination, difficulty starting or maintaining a steady stream, and an incomplete sense of bladder emptying. These issues, while rare in men under 40, become increasingly common past the age of 60.

What is it about ageing that makes men more vulnerable to prostate issues? Age is a double-edged sword. On one hand, it increases the likelihood of prolonged exposure to harmful environmental and lifestyle factors. On the other, it can diminish the body’s ability to repair and protect itself, especially when vitality, diet, and activity levels take a hit. But there’s good news: simple lifestyle changes can reduce risks and even improve outcomes for those already diagnosed.

Prostate Cancer Through History

Prostate health may feel like a modern concern, but prostate cancer was first identified in 1853 by Dr. J. Adams during an autopsy in London. Even before then, symptoms resembling prostate enlargement were documented in ancient Egyptian papyri, suggesting this has been a male health issue for millennia. However, historical diagnoses were rare because many men didn’t live long enough to develop prostate conditions—average life expectancy hovered around 40 years for much of history.

Fast forward to today, with men living longer than ever before, and prostate health has come into sharper focus. Modern research reveals how diet and lifestyle play a crucial role in prevention, with a growing body of evidence linking prostate cancer to obesity, poor nutrition, and sedentary living.

The Science of Prostate Protection

The World Cancer Research Fund’s 2018 Continuous Update Project (CUP) shed new light on prostate cancer prevention. It confirmed that obesity and height (being tall) are key risk factors for advanced prostate cancer. While we can’t change our genetics, diet remains a powerful tool in our arsenal. Diets high in calcium and dairy products, for example, are associated with increased risk. At the same time, deficiencies in essential nutrients like selenium and vitamin E may also play a role.

Lycopene, the antioxidant responsible for the vibrant red hue in tomatoes, is a standout nutrient in prostate health. Studies suggest that lycopene targets specific free radicals that damage prostate cells, potentially reducing cancer risk. Cooking tomatoes—think passata, tomato juice, and stews—actually enhances lycopene’s bioavailability, making it easier for the body to absorb.

Another antioxidant powerhouse, pomegranate, has long been celebrated in traditional medicine. Packed with polyphenols, ellagic acid, and anthocyanins, pomegranate protects prostate cells from free radical damage and may also reduce urinary issues linked to an enlarged prostate. The fruit even features in ancient Persian texts as a symbol of vitality and longevity, a nod to its timeless health benefits.

And let’s not forget the humble cruciferous vegetables: broccoli, Brussels sprouts, kale, and cabbage. These contain sulforaphane, a compound with potent anti-cancer properties, particularly in hormone-sensitive cancers like prostate cancer. Light steaming preserves their protective compounds—boiling them to mush does not.

Soy foods, often misunderstood in the Western diet, deserve mention too. In countries like Japan, where soy is a dietary staple, prostate cancer rates are significantly lower. This is partly attributed to phytoestrogens, plant compounds in soy that may counteract the harmful effects of oestrogen on the prostate. However, it’s likely the overall plant-based, low-dairy dietary pattern plays an even more significant role.

Lifestyle: Small Changes, Big Results

While diet forms the foundation of prostate health, lifestyle factors can amplify these benefits. Regular physical activity helps regulate hormones, reduce inflammation, and support a healthy weight—all critical for lowering prostate cancer risk. Meanwhile, avoiding smoking and limiting alcohol can reduce exposure to carcinogens that might otherwise accumulate over time.

Stress, often overlooked in discussions of men’s health, can also impact prostate health. Chronic stress may disrupt hormonal balance and exacerbate inflammation, setting the stage for disease. Mindfulness practices, whether through yoga, meditation, or simply taking time for hobbies, are increasingly recognized as integral to overall wellness.

Prostate-Friendly Recipes to Try

Food can be both medicine and pleasure, and prostate health is no exception. Incorporating nutrient-dense, prostate-friendly ingredients into everyday meals doesn’t have to be complicated.

• Hearty Tomato Soup with Lentils and Kale: Slow-cooked tomatoes (canned or passata) for maximum lycopene, combined with fibrerich lentils and antioxidant-packed kale, make this a comforting and protective dish.

• Grilled Salmon with Pomegranate Glaze: Rich in omega-3 fatty acids and paired with a tangy pomegranate reduction, this dish is as delicious as it is nutrient-dense.

• Broccoli Stir-Fry with Garlic and Tofu: Packed with sulforaphane, this vibrant stir-fry brings together the best of cruciferous vegetables and plant-based protein

Prostate health is a journey, not a destination. While the statistics can feel daunting, the steps toward prevention are clear: eat a colourful balanced diet, maintain an active lifestyle, and embrace regular screenings as part of your routine health care. Movember is more than an excuse for growing a moustache, it’s a call to action for men everywhere to take charge of their health and make informed, proactive choices.

Once Upon a Time in the Southwest

Notorious Robber

- Saunders Newsletter, 08 February, 1711

About two o’clock last Tuesday morning a number of men, armed with guns and swords came to the gaol of this town (Tralee). They opened the gaol door with a key they had brought and released the noted robber Arthur Bible.

He had been jailed for a robbery at Mr. Hussey’s house in Dingle. We are assured that Bible is very clever in eluding justice. He is wanted for numerous robberies in various counties. In Dingle he recovered some valuable plate, (dishes, cups etc. made of gold or silver), belonging to Hussey which had been concealed in a sand bank near Dingle.

Along with Hussey’s plate the sand bank also concealed a large quantity of plate belonging to the Earl of Shannon which had been stolen by Bible while he worked for the Earl.

Some 20 years ago Bible was locked up in Tralee gaol for a robbery committed at Lord Kenmare’s home. He broke out of the gaol during the night at some point and robbed Lord Kenmare’s home a second time.

Two Thousand Families Starving In West Kerry

In the Central Statistics Office (CSO) in Dublin is a copy of a petition seeking aid, support and relief from hunger from the Lord Lieutenant Wellesley at Dublin Castle dated 19 May 1822. The petition was sent by James Crosbie who was the chairman of the Central Relief Committee in Kerry. His petition emphasised the distress prevalent in Dingle and the surrounding area; ‘upwards of two Thousand Families are at this moment in a state of absolute starvation’. He suggested a public works scheme to bring relief to the area.

(This was 25 years before the Great Famine).

Two Men Executed for Murder

- Belfast Weekly News, 27 January, 1883

Thirty years have passed since an execution took place in Kerry. This morning the period of exemption was broken. Sylvester Poff (36) and James Barrett (21) paid the penalty of the law for the murder of Thomas Browne of Drumulton, near Castleisland.

On the third of October last Thomas Browne was shot dead in a field close to his own house. There was no clue as to who was responsible and a long time before someone made a report to the authorities.

An old woman came forward with information on the murder and swore to have seen Poff and Barrett go towards the field where Browne was working. She reported to have seen them leave immediately after having heard the fatal shot.

The trial took place in Cork and the first jury disagreed. The Crown, confident of having discovered the murderers, was determined to put them forward again, this time with success. The two men were found guilty and were sentenced by Judge Barry to be hung.

Their execution took place in Tralee Gaol on January 23, 1883 and was strictly private except for members of the press. The two men slept well the night before and attended Mass on the morning of the hanging. They were then led to a hall close to the prison yard where the pinioning (restraining) was prepared.

Poff was married with three children. He declared he was about to die and meet his God and protested his innocence. Barrett was a single man and repeated Poff’s declaration. Poff mounted the scaffold steps taking two at a time.

Death was instantaneous. The black flag was hoisted at precisely five minutes past eight o’clock and the bodies were cut down at nine. (The black flag was a signal to those outside the jail that the execution had been carried out.)

(On the 30 October, 2024, President Higgins granted a pardon to both men when the convictions were found to be unsafe following an expert review of the case.)

Irishmen Spread Murder And Terror In The US

- Kerry Evening Post, 28 January, 1835

Letter from Baltimore dated December 6, 1834

‘Four hundred Irishmen have been brought in under a strong military escort after perpetrating the most wanton and cruel murders. They have struck terror through several areas including Washington, Baltimore and the Ohio railroads.

This peaceful and once happy region has become the theatre of the most appalling crimes. I am constrained to say, with regret and shame, that Irishmen (I allude to the lower class) are disgracing themselves, their country and all that is respectable and virtuous in the Irish character.

These men have their sworn oaths of secrecy. The laws of the land are trampled underfoot and incapable of offering protection to the muchabused inhabitants of the land.

(The letter was unsigned. What was this all about? No details and numerous searches failed to throw any light on this item).

Lost off the Blasket Islands

- Cork Examiner, 16 November, 1861

On Tuesday, a small schooner, bound from Cork to Tralee, laden with fish and coal, and consigned to John Donovan and Sons, Tralee, foundered off the Blasket Islands. The crew, four in number, took to their boat, and after a severe and long pull landed on the Skellig Rock where they were supported by the lighthouse keeper.

The crew arrived in Tralee last night. The schooner, named Caledonia, with McCarthy master, was purchased in Cork about three weeks ago by two enterprising traders. Both ship and cargo were fully insured.

(Seems strange that the crew rowed all the way to the Skellig when they could have gone to Portmagee, Knightstown, Ventry or Dingle. Maybe the vessel foundered at night and the crew were drawn to the Skellig light?).

Dingle Lit Festival 2024: A Resounding Success

Dingle Lit Festival 2024 has concluded, marking another successful year of literary celebration here in West Kerry. The festival attracted a record number of attendees, who engaged with a diverse program of events featuring some of the finest names in contemporary Irish literature. Among the standout moments of the festival was the sold-out opening night with Roddy Doyle, as well as events with Sinéad Gleeson, Olivia Hope, Oliver Jeffers, and Cecelia Ahern.

This year’s festival introduced two exciting new events: the Short Story Competition, which highlighted the exceptional talent of emerging writers who participated in the 2024 competition, and the Writers on the Bus event. In partnership with Kerry County Council’s Writer-inResidence program, Writers on the Bus saw Kerry writers embark on a scenic journey around Slea Head aboard the Local Link bus, where they drew inspiration from the landscape to create new work.

At the event celebrating the 2024 Short Story Competition winners, it was announced that the competition will reopen for submissions in both English and Irish on December 1st. Two new guest judges were also revealed: John Patrick McHugh for the English-language entries, and Éilís Ní Dhuibhne for the Irish-language entries. Additional judges and more information will be announced in the coming days.

With the overwhelming response to this year’s festival, Dingle Lit continues to strengthen its position as one of Ireland's premier literary festivals, offering a platform for both established and emerging voices in literature.

During the opening night, it was announced that Sheila O'Reilly, the founding director of the Dingle Lit Festival, will be stepping back from her role in the day-to-day management of the event. The committee extended their sincere thanks to Sheila for her instrumental role in the festival’s success and for her dedication in establishing it as a premier literary event. While Sheila will step back from daily operations, she will continue to contribute to future events, helping to ensure the continued growth of Dingle Lit.

It was also announced that committee members Bláithín Mac Donnell and Hannah Bulger will take over Sheila O'Reilly’s responsibilities, stepping into the roles of Creative Director and Festival Director respectively. All members of the Dingle Lit committee dedicate their time and expertise on a voluntary basis.

From the book Dingle by Jack McKenna, first published in 1985 with a third edition being published last year. Available in bookshops and at dinglewoollencompany.com With kind permission of the McKenna family.

This election was to fill a vacancy for the county of Kerry in the House of Commons and even though it involved the whole of the county it was of special interest to Dingle. In December 1871 the then Earl of Kenmare died, and his seat in the House of Lords became vacant. His son, Viscount Castlerosse, who was one of Kerry's representatives in the House of Commons, succeeded him as the new Earl and moved to the House of Lords. Thus his seat in the Commons became vacant. For years previous to this Kerry's seats in the House of Commons were dominated by the two prominent Killarney families, the Herbert family of Muckross House and that of Lord Kenmare. There was an agreement between them that when a vacancy occurred, in order to avoid the expense and trouble of an election they alternated in filling the seat uncontested. The ordinary voters simply had no choice in the matter. But, times were changing.

In 1870 Isaac Butt founded the Irish Home Rule party and by 1872 branches had been formed all over Ireland. The party decided to contest this election and they nominated Rowland Blennerhasset, a protestant, of Kells near Cahirciveen, as their candidate. The Earl of Kenmare's son was then a minor so the family nominated a cousin, James A. Dease, a catholic, from Westmeath, to oppose Blennerhasset. It was a bizarre situation - a catholic, supported by the bishop of the diocese, Dr. Moriarty, and the general body of Kerry landlords, opposing Home Rule; and a protestant fighting for Home Rule

In the Dingle area the powerful influence of Lord Ventry and his brother Captain de Moleyns was behind Dease. Voting at the time was by open vote, and fear of eviction or other consequences was a very telling factor if a tenant dared to vote against the landlord's nominee. The prominent members of the local Home Rule branch supporting Blennerhasset were: Patrick Grey, auctioneer, Thomas O'Donoghue, merchant, John Adams, draper, and John Lee, of Lee's Hotel. The parish priest of Dingle, Canon O'Sullivan remained neutral in the situation.

Nomination day was the 6th February and Mr. Dease arrived from Killarney by special train accompanied by his supporters and guarded by constabulary. Mr. Blennerhasset had stayed the previous night with Mr. Thomas Sandes at his residence, Oakville, Tralee, and was met at the courthouse by his backers. The Rev. Denis O'Donoghue, parish priest of Ardfert and a native of John Street, Dingle, proposed Mr. Blennerhasset and Mr. Sandes seconded. Mr. Dease was proposed by Sir James O'Connell and seconded by Major Crosbie.

There were 609 voters registered for West Kerry. It became known that the supporters of Blennerhasset would travel by way of Annascaul and Camp to Tralee, while the Dingle area voters who were to support Dease would go by Conor Hill and Castlegregory. The Dease voters who were largely Lord Ventry's tenant-farmers were ordered to come to Dingle on the night before the election where they were to be housed for the night in William Collier's vacant houses in John Street. The main attention was focused on this group.

The authorities feared trouble as the ground-swell among the people was very much in favour of the Home Rule candidate. A detachment of cavalry was asked for and dispatched to Dingle to protect the voters and the Conor Hill route was reconnoitred several times as a security measure.

At an early hour on polling day, February 9th, 200 voters assembled at the Small Bridge to be conveyed in various makes of carts to Tralee. They were escorted by a large force of constabulary led by Captain de Moleyns. A number of opposition supporters also assembled and mocked and jeered at the anti-Home Rulers . The cavalcade had a turbulent journey. Before Conor Pass was reached it was found that the tackling of some of the horses had been cut and some of the drafting chains were missing. This entailed considerable delay, but much more confusion and delays were to follow.

At Stradbally the procession met with a fiercely hostile reception from the local Home Rulers. The parish priest of Castlegregory, Fr. John O'Kane,

coming from the Cloghane side of the parish overtook them on the road. He remained behind until they reached Killiney cross. Then he sped along through Killiney and Castlegregory village and was before the cortege on the main road where the grotto now stands.

Obstructions on the road there forced the group to stop and Fr. O'Kane gave a spirited address to the would-be voters. He reprimanded them for allowing themselves to be carted in this humiliating manner to vote against the movement for Home Rule. At this juncture many of the voters jumped from their carts and ran away. The Castlegregory Home Rulers fell upon those who remained and forced them to take to their heels. An altercation started between Lord Ventry and the escorting cavalry commander. The commander at this stage felt that he had enough and that he was rowing against a very strong current of public opinion. He ordered his men to march on and the voters were left to fend for themselves. Without the escort confusion reigned. Most of the voters, and among them Captain de Moleyns, returned to Dingle as best they could but about twenty reached Tralee.

Blennerhasset was elected by a three to one majority. The election and the circumstances attending it had far-reaching beneficial effects. It proved to be the last "open" election in Ireland. Shortly afterwards legislation was introduced to have elections decided by secret vote and the Ballot Act became law on 13th July 1872.

Ráiteas

Tá ana-dhíomá ar gach duine againn i CLG Daingean Uí Chúis, mar aon lenár mbunscoileanna agus meánscoileanna áitiúla agus grúpaí pobail spóirt agus neamh-spórt comhpháirtíochta anseo in iarthar Chiarraí, nach bhfuil aon leithdháileadh maoinithe faighte againn as an Ciste Bonneagair Spóirt ar Mhórscála 2024 dár gclár forbartha Mol Pobail & áiseanna ilmhilliún euro.

Ón bpota maoinithe de €173m, tá €7.75m faighte ag Ciarraí - le tionscadal Staidiam Mhic Gearailt CLG Chiarraí chun tosaigh ar na leithdháiltí le €6m á bhronnadh air chun ardán an lucht féachana a uasghrádú taobh thiar de chúl an iarthair.

Guímid gach rath ar thionscadal Staidiam Mhic Gearailt ach bhíomar ag súil go bhféachfaí ar thionscadail trasphobail sa chontae mar ár gceann féin, a chuireann rannpháirtíocht spóirt agus rannpháirtíocht pobail chun cinn ar feadh na bliana, uile-aimsire, 7 lá in aghaidh na seachtaine. Bhíomar ag súil go bh’féachfaí níos fabhraí ar rannpháirtíocht na bhfear agus na mban i spóirt agus ar rannpháirtíocht an phobail nuair a bhí na cistí á ndáile. Is mór an díomá é dár gcoiste dícheallach, ár mbaill, ár scoileanna agus an t-iliomad grúpaí pobail anseo i gCiarraí Thiar a bheith fácaithe ar léig.Táimid ag obair le chéile ar seo ó 2021 - comhairliúchán fairsing pobail, staidéir féidearthachta, máistirphlean ceaptha, pleanáil a deonaíodh, féinmhaoinithe de €850k, srl.

Le costas iomlán de €77m ar thionscadal Staidiam Mhic Gearailt, is cúis imní é go mbeidh pobail bheaga mar atá againne, nach bhfuil oiread agus ionad pobail nó áiseanna bunúsacha acu dá mbaill ban,

san iomaíocht arís i gcoinne thionscadal Staid Mhic Gearailt nuair a cuirfear maoiniú rialtais ar fáil amach anseo.

Braithimid go láidir nár cheart go mbeadh ar bhailte agus sráidbhailte, a bhfuil pleananna uaillmhianacha acu le dul i ngleic le heasnaimh thromchúiseacha bonneagair phobail, dul san iomaíocht le haghaidh maoinithe in aghaidh comhlachtaí náisiúnta spóirt, a bhfuil cúlchistí suntasacha airgid agus láimhdeachas sna milliúin euro ag go leor acu.

Táimid fós dírithe ar ár bpleananna athfhorbartha. Leanfaimid ag obair leis an Rialtas agus leis na príomhpháirtithe leasmhara eile chun iniúchadh a dhéanamh ar na slite maoinithe go léir a thabharfaidh ár dtionscadal pobail chun críche a luaithe agus is féidir.

É sin ráite, tá an-díomá orainn leis an bhfógra Dé Luain, agus táimid ag lorg tacaíocht pholaitiúil.

Statement

All of us at CLG Daingean Uí Chúis along with our local primary and secondary schools and partner sporting and non-sporting community groups here in West Kerry are bitterly disappointed not to have received any funding allocation from the 2024 Large Scale Sports Infrastructure Fund for our multi-million euro Community Hub & facilities development programme.

From the funding pot of €173m, Kerry has received €7.75m - with Kerry GAA’s Fitzgerald Stadium project dominating the allocations being awarded €6m to upgrade the spectator terrace behind the western goal.

We wish the Fitzgerald Stadium project well but we had hoped that cross-community projects in the county such as ours, which promote year-round, all-weather, 7 day per week male and female sports participation and community engagement would have been looked upon more favourably when funds were being allocated. It is very disheartening for our hard-working committee, our members, our schools and the multitude of community groups here in West Kerry to have been overlooked. Together, we have been working on this since 2021 - extensive community consultation, feasibility studies, masterplan devised, planning granted, €850k selffunded, etc.

With the full Fitzgerald Stadium project estimated to cost €77m, it is a concern that small communities like ours, who do not have as much as a community center or basic facilities for our female members, will be competing against the Fitzgerald Stadium project again as future government funding becomes available.

We strongly feel that towns and villages with ambitious plans to address serious community infrastructure deficits should not have to compete for funding against national sporting bodies, many of whom have significant cash reserves and turnovers in the millions of euros.

We remain committed to our redevelopment plans. We will continue working with Government and all other key stakeholders in exploring all funding avenues that will bring our community project to fruition as soon as possible.

That said, we are extremely disappointed with Monday’s announcement, and we plead for political support.

Carlo Acutis

– Tioncaire Dé / God’s Influencer

Saolaíodh Carlo Acutis i Londain, agus nuair a bhí sé óg d’aistrigh an clann go dtí an Iodáil. Buachaill thar a bheith éirimiúil, tuisceanach, déirciúil agus flaithiúil ab ea Carlo, dar leis na daoine, idir óg agus aosta, a raibh aithne acu air. Bhí grá ar leith aige don Eocairist agus don gCoróin Mhuire agus chuir sé iachall ar a thuismitheoirí é a thabhairt go dtí na scrínte cáiliúla san Iodáil agus áiteanna eile. Bhí ana chur amach aige ar chúrsaí ríomhaireachta agus chuir sé suíomh idirlíon le chéile mar gheall ar Mhíorúiltí Eocairiste agus tá teacht fós ar an suíomh sin. Mar a dúirt Carlo ‘An Eocairist an bóthar mór leathan agamsa go Flaithis Dé’. Buaileadh breoite le leoicéime é nuair a bhí sé ina dhéagóir, agus d’ofráil sé an méid a d’fhulaing sé ar son an Phápa agus na hEaglaise. Tá sé curtha in Assisi agus téann na mílte chun guí ag a thuama. Fógraíodh beannaithe é ar 10 Deireadh Fómhair 2020. Beidh sé á naomhchanónú an bhliain seo chugainn, ar an 27ú Aibreán 2025 - Domhnach na Trócaire Diaga.

Carlo Acutis was born May 3, 1991, in London though his family moved to Milan shortly after. From a young age, Carlo seemed to have a special love for God, even though his parents weren’t especially devout. His mother Antonia, said she had been to Mass only for her First Communion, her confirmation, and her wedding but young Carlo’s unique and unexplained devotion led

to her deep conversion. He had a gift for empathy and was known for defending children at school who got picked on, and those who were disabled. Carlo loved soccer and video games. He also bought computer programming books and taught himself computer coding and animation. He had a great devotion to Mary and loved to pray the rosary. He went to Mass and confession as often as he could.

He loved the Eucharist and was fascinated by Eucharistic miracles. He asked his parents to take him on pilgrimages — to the shrines of the saints, to the sites of Eucharistic miracles and Marian apparations. Using his research, he began creating what would eventually become a website to catalogue and share the information with others. On the site, he told people that “The more often we receive the Eucharist, the more we will become like Jesus, so that on this earth we will have a foretaste of heaven.”

At age 15, Carlo was diagnosed with an untreatable leukaemia. He offered up his suffering for others coping with illness and said, “I offer all the suffering I will have to suffer for the Lord, for the Pope, and the Church.”

Carlo died from his illness on October 12, 2006. At his request he was buried in Assisi because of his love for St. Francis. His cause for canonisation began in 2013 and he was designated “Venerable” in 2018, and Blessed on October 10, 2020, and will be canonised on the 27th of April 2025 - Divine Mercy Sunday.

His tomb has been opened in Assisi and his body lies in repose in a glass tomb where he can be venerated by pilgrims. He is displayed in jeans and a pair of Nikes, the casual clothes he preferred in life. Mgr. Anthony Figueiredo who promotes Carlo’s cause, called him a witness that holiness is attainable for teenagers. “This is a great message for us, we can feel holiness not as a distant thing but as something very much within everyone’s reach because the Lord is the Lord of everyone.” www.carloacutis-en.org.

Tá bunchloch leagtha againn chuig Comórtas ’27 anois, le sé fhochoiste bunaithe, mar leanas, i) Párcáil, Ollphobal is Bainistíocht Tráchta, ii) Siamsaíocht is Cúrsaí Fuaime, iii) Caidreamh Poiblí, na Meáin is Airgeadas, iv) Áiseanna Páirceála is Cúrsaí Sábháilteachta, v) Bia, Bar is Siopaí; agus vi) Lóistín. Mar bharr air sin, tugadh le fios don gCruinniú go raibh comhráití tarlaithe cheana fhéin leis na h-úinéirí talún cuí d’ionaid phárcála is d’Ollphobal na Féile, agus go raibh rath ar an idirbheartaíocht úd go dtí seo.

Labhair Oifigeach an Gaeilge (RÓC) CLG Lios Póil ag an ócáid, chomh maith, agus do ghríosaigh sé a raibh in láthair i dtreo na Gaelainne – ‘croí na féile caide seo romhainn an Ghaelainn’, dar leis. Agus ar seisean, ‘tá Gaelainn aige gach duine i láthair, agus is seans glórmhar do Mhuintir Lios Póil ár dteanga a mhuscailt sa dá bhliain go leith romhainn le bheith líofa don bhFéile!’ Chuige sin, do spreag sé baill na bhfochoistí an Ghaelainn a bheith chun cinn go leanúnach acu sna comhráití agus sa phlé i dtreo an Chomórtais. Ar deireadh, b’ábhar misnigh dó an Ghaelainn a bheith ar barra ag an gcruinniú tosaigh seo – tús maith leath …! B’é a dhea-ghuí go leanfaí ar aghaidh ar an nóta dearfach san siar go heireaball le – ‘Fáilte go Lios Póil’, ‘Gura maith agat/agaibh as teacht chugainn’, ‘Bain/íg taitneamh as an gComórtas’, ‘Bua leat/libh’, agus ‘Le chéile is fearr sinn’, mar mhana agus mar dhea-ghuí na meithile.

An tAire Oideachais Norma Foley, is a comhluadar san Ionad Pobail.

Misniú mór dúinne muintir Lios Póil, fáiltiú go geal roimh an Aire Oideachais, Norma Foley go hIonad Pobail Lios Póil le linn dá camchuairt toghchánaíochta go Corca Dhuibhne maidin Shathairn seo chaite. Léiríomar do Norma na pleananna suantasacha atá beartaithe againn d’athfhorbairt áiseanna spóirt is siamsaíochta an Ionad Phobail. D’éist an tAire go tuisceanach lenár scéal, agus ghuigh sí gach rath orainn lenár dtogra forbartha. Táimid buíoch do Norma as a turas orainn, agus as a tacaíocht láidir go dtí seo dúinn. Guímid gach rath uirthi sa toghchán. Mar eolas, ar deireadh, tá iomlán deontaisí de €701,382 ceadaithe don bhforbairt i mbliana idir an scéim Clár Tacaíochtaí Pobail is Teanga, Sports Capital, agus Scéim CLÁR. Is mór go deo againn an cúnamh ríthacúil seo.

Buille scoir!

Tréaslaím an 400ú eagrán de Chorca Dhuibhne Beo leis na heagarthóirí Mossy Donegan agus Lorcán Ó Slattara, gur éacht gan dabht é, leis seo an 62ú alt óm pheann fhéin! Go dté an iris thábhachtach seo i saol na muintire i gCorca Dhuibhne is i gcéin ó neart go neart!

FOCLÓIR:

Beag a’ bhaol-no doubt, tugadh le fios-informed, bunchlochfoundation, comhráití-conversations, úinéirí-owners, idirbheartaíochtnegotiations, ghríosaigh-urge, siar go heireaball-to the very end, manna-motto, camchuairt-tour, is mór go deo againn-we appreciate very much.

Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance

I hope that you all have enjoyed the last few weeks and were able to attend some of the great events that have been on.

INTERNATIONAL REGENERATIVE TOURISM CONFERENCE

At the time of writing Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance in partnership with Munster Technological University are currently hosting the International Regenerative Tourism Conference at the Dingle Skellig Hotel 19th – 20th November 2024. The aim of the conference is to explore the future of sustainable tourism through a regenerative lens. 80 small businesses (SME’s) from 5 countries (Ireland, Poland, Netherlands, Finland and Iceland) were selected for the EU funded Programme of which 18 came from Ireland and in turn 10 of those came from the Dingle Peninsula (Gleann Loic Farmhouse, Dún Chaoin. Anne’s Coffee Shop, An Cam. Dingle Garden Townhouse, Louis Mulcahy Pottery, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh Cill Bhreac House, Dingle Sea Safari, Mossie’s Tours, Dingle Farm, Dingle Aquarium, Dingle Boat Tours)

EUROPEAN CULTURAL TOURISM NETWORK AWARD

In the last edition we reported that the Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance (DPTA) won the 2024 Sustainable Cultural Tourism award from the European Cultural Tourism Network (ECTN) for its Cultural Calendar of Events which publicized the region’s 32 annual community festivals and celebrations. I thought it would be prudent to let you know that when announcing the winner in the category of 'Intangible Heritage, including Festivals, for Sustainable Cultural Tourism' Piet Jaspaert, chair of European Heritage Alliance 3.3 who also chaired the ECTN Award’s Joint Jury, called it amazing that one poster could represent such a wealth of cultural heritage and community volunteerism.

The Dingle Peninsula Festivals and Events Calendar “showcases how small communities on the edge of Europe can demonstrate resilience and determination to preserve and retain our native language and cultural heritage whilst keeping intact the sense of belonging for our communities and villages,” Jaspaert said, quoting the submission by the DPTA. He added that the calendar helped sustain local family-run businesses, extended their business seasons and provided jobs, while working toward a circular economy.

Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance promotes the Dingle Peninsula as a destination to stay longer to truly experience our local culture and heritage while being inspired by our landscape in a way that supports Leave No Trace principles. The Dingle Peninsula is now recognised on the European stage as a Sustainable Cultural Tourism Destination, and the award underscores the EU recognition of the Peninsula’s local voluntary committees and the magic of each event in which these volunteers have been acknowledged, appreciated and celebrated for their dedication and passion for the Irish language, heritage and culture of the Dingle Peninsula.

Peppered Chicken

Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School

Peppered chicken is a comforting dish perfect for cooler evenings, combining a warmth and rich flavour. The dish is elevated with a creamy pepper sauce infused with shallot and garlic, creating a balance of heat and indulgence. Served alongside buttery mashed potatoes and some greens this hearty meal provides a satisfying, cosy experience. Ideal for gatherings or a quiet night in, peppered chicken is a versatile dish that’s sure to please any palate.

Ingredients

1 tbsp. whole black peppercorns oil

800g chicken thighs (bone in)

50g butter

2 shallots, diced

2 cloves garlic, diced

300ml chicken stock

150ml cream

2-3 thyme sprigs

½ lemon, juiced handful of parsley, chopped salt and pepper

Method

Crush the peppercorns. Heat a casserole pot over medium heat, once hot add a little oil. Season the chicken and add to the pot. Allow them to brown on each side (you may need to do this in batches). Transfer them to a plate once browned, wipe out the excess oil. Turn down the heat a little and add some butter, add the shallot and garlic. Let this cook for a few minutes until they have softened. Add the stock, cream, thyme and peppercorns. Stir this well. Return the chicken to the pot, baste this well with the creamy pepper sauce. Allow this to simmer, cover with a lid and allow this to cook for about 25 minutes. Check this occasionally and baste each time. Check the chicken to make sure it has cooked. Once cooked add some lime juice and parsley, season and serve with some creamy mash potato and some tasty greens.

Sport Facilities Fund Appeals

Some organisations in Corca Dhuibhne appealed their allocations under the Community Sport Facilities Fund and it was great to see them awarded additional funding as a result of their appeals. I was very happy to work with Minister Norma Foley TD to help achieve this result -

• Ionad Pobail Lios Póil Cuideachta Faoi Theorainn Ráthaíochta now receiving €500,000

• Cumann Caide Na Gaeltachta now receiving €101,740

• Milltown Castlemaine GAA now receiving €174,000

Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF) CLG Daingean Uí Chúis were unsuccessful in their application under the Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund to develop a Community Facility at Páric an Ághasaigh, Dingle. I’m very happy to say that Norma Foley TD has worked very closely with Dingle GAA to get their application this far and will continue to make every effort to help achieve a successful outcome to this worthwhile project.

At our November meeting of Kerry County Council I received full Council support for the following motion – “That Kerry County Council call on the Minister for Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media, and the Minister of State for Sport, Physical Education and the Gaeltacht, to let all unsuccessful applicants for the Large Scale Sport Infrastructure Fund (LSSIF) know why they were unsuccessful and to allocate additional funding which would be ringfenced for the unsuccessful applicants to make an appeal on their application for funding under the LSSIF.”

Film Review: Small Things Like These

Tom Ó Neachtain

Small Things Like These is a 1980’s-set drama, adapted from the acclaimed novella by Claire Keegan, published in 2020. The story follows Bill Furlong, a coal-merchant and family man living in New Ross, who struggles to reckon with the pain of his past as well as the abuse happening just out of sight in the local Magdalene laundry. This is Cillian Murphy’s first role since his Oscar win earlier this year. He also produced the film, along with Matt Damon and Ben Affleck.

Murphy absolutely sinks into the central role, delivering an impressively understated and measured performance. He communicates all of Furlong’s pain expertly through restrained expressions and even more restrained dialogue, and the subtlety and truth of his performance proves very emotionally rewarding towards the film’s end. Tim Mielantis’ direction is equally measured. The film’s depiction of a mid-recession Ireland is bleak and cold, and the direction and story wisely never dramatize the cruelty of the Magdalene laundries. Similar to the other famous Keegan screen-adaptation, An Cailín Ciúin, the film says a lot by saying very little. However, unlike An Cailín Ciúin, this film plays down the drama of its finale. This is in keeping with the story’s subtlety, but slightly mutes its impact, especially when compared to the emotional punch of the novella’s ending. Nevertheless, the story as a whole is hugely affecting, and uses its bleak subject-matter to show how hope can always shine through darkness, a message that will never lose its relevance.

Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.

A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.

There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!

Christmas Shoebox Appeal: Transition Years in Meánscoil Nua an Leith-Triúigh would like to thank anyone who supported this year's Christmas Shoebox Appeal. 150 shoe boxes were sent off. Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.

Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.

Mícheál Ó hUanacháin

Ainneoin go bhfuil dornán cluichí fós le n-imirt sna comortais faoi aois, tá an séasúr geall le bheith críochnaithe, agus níl le déanamh anois ach ceil iúradh ar an méid a baineadh amach sa dara bhliain seo de shaol Kerry FC mar chlub Sraithe. Beidh an ceiliúradh sin ar siúl ar an Satharn beag seo, in óstán an Rose i dTrá Lí.

Is deacair a shamhlú nach é Ryan Kelliher a bheidh ina churadh don séasúr, agus a fheabhas aitheanta cheana féin as a ainmniú i bhfoireann na bliana do Chéad Sraith.

Ní gá bheith ró-bhuartha faoi bhun an tábla a bhaint amach arís. Dá mbeadh cúpla toradh níos fearr acu ag druidim le deireadh an tséasúir, bhí ardú ar an gcéim sin tuillte acu ar a n-imirt, agus caillte de bharr míádh i gcúpla cluiche.

Beidh turasanna rompu an bhliain seo chugainn chuig Dún Dealgan i gCo Lú, ach n^bheidh cuairteanna le déanamh ar Chathair Chorcaí, os iad a fuair ardú céime go dtí an Phríomhshraith, rud a theip ar fhoireann Bhrí Chualainn le cluiche sraithe deiridh na bliana.

Beidh na himreoirí díomhaoin, a bheag nó a mhór, as seo go lár mí Feabhra, cé go bhfillfidh siad ar an traenáil go maith sara mbeidh aon chluiche le n-imirt. Is nós forleathan é cluichí cairdeasa bheith á n-imirt mar ullmhúchán do na comortais, agus seans go mbeidh ceann nó dhó de chlubanna móra an chluiche ag tabhairt cuairte ar an Ríocht i dtús na bliana.

Beidh an lucht bainistíochta go tréan ag pleanáil is ag prapáil don séasúr úr, agus súil ghéar acu ar na leads óg atá ag teacht in aibíocht trí na foirne faoi aois, agus tá leas na scéime sin feicthe cheana féin, agus Finn Barrett tar éis an chuid is mó de thaithí bliana a fháil ó tugadh isteach sa bhfoireann sinsearach é.

STORAGE UNITS

Ceann de na mí-bhuntáistí a bhaineann le bheith i do mhion-chlub, gan struchtúr mór agus taithí na mblianta agat, ná gur tarraingt damanta mealltach é ainm chlub mór má thagann a leithíd sa tóir ar do chuid imreoirí – ag póitseáil, mar a deirtear go minic. Go háirithe le imreoirí óga, is éasca iad a bhréagadh le stair éachtach agus an seans imirt le haghaidh na trófaithe móra, b'fhéidir bheith páirteach sna comortais Eorpacha fiú.

Beidh bainistíocht Pháirc Chnocán an Iolair ag súil go láidir go mbeidh siad in ann an tarraingt sin a chur ó dhoras, agus imreoirí áitiúla den scoth atá acu cheana féin a choinneáil sa Ríocht go ceann tamaill eile, ar a laghad. Sinsir agus sóisir, rinne na himreoirí a gcion chun seasamh an chlub nua seo a dhaingniú i gcaitheamh na bliana. Beidh an lucht tacaíochta ag tnúth lena thuilleadh den imirt láidir, den feabhas agus den aclaíocht a thaispeánadar in 2024 a fheiceáil arís, agus a thuilleadh ina theannta, in 2025.

Má tá sé ró-luath fós bheith ag guí beannachtaí na Nollag ar éinne, níl sé mí-chuíosach dea-ghuí an tsosa idir na séasúir a chur chuig foireann iomlán an chluib, idir imreoirí agus bainistíocht, idir lucht tacaíochta agus iad siúd nach ndéanann ach torthaí na gcluichí a lorg, agus fillfimid ar chúrsaí sacair san athbhliain.

Is díolaim í seo a eascraíonn as an stór dánta atá cumtha ag Dairena Ní Chinnéide le scór bliain anuas, móide mám de dhánta nua, a thugann léargas dúinn ar dhomhan pearsanta, ildánach, cruthaitheach an fhile. Rogha pearsanta an fhile féin as na cnuasaigh atá foilsithe aici atá sa díolaim seo - seoda filíochta ón gcéad chnuasach anall. Sna dánta seo, faigheann muid blaiseadh den draíocht bhaineann, imir de scamaill an dorchadais, insint ar thóraíocht na sláinte intinne agus go leor eile, ó fhile atá ag saothrú fé ghuth na mban agus na máthar, agus a spíonann an saol mar a shamhlaítear di é. Ceistítear brí na beithsine féin sna dánta seo, freagraíonn an file dá timpeallacht intleachtach agus fhisiceach ar bhealach liriceach, líofa a thagann ó chroí, intinn agus spiorad an fhile agus déanann sí é sin uile go beacht tomhaiste. Tá teacht aniar, i ngach brí den fhocal, sa rogha dánta seo a thagann aniar aduaidh orainn ar uairibh, a nochtann taobh tuathail den saol ar uairibh eile agus atá lán de bheocht agus de dhúchas. Tugann an cnuasach seo lón don intinn agus don tsamhlaíocht agus ar ár dtumadh féin isteach ann, faigheann muid ugach agus dóchas uaidh a chuidíonn linn go léir treabhadh ar aghaidh tríd an saol corrach amach romhainn.' - Éabhlóid

Tá an chosúlacht ar an scéal go bhfuil deire tagtha leis an samhradh cruaidh/bog. Bhain gach duine sásamh as an aimsir mhaith go mór mhór lucht na filíochta agus pearsain léanta. Níl aon amhras ach go bhfuil Simon Ó Faoláin, eagraí an Fhéile Bheag filíochta, sásta leis an ndeire seachtaine ilghnéitheach filíochta. Chuir an léacht a thuig Eiléan ní Chuilleanáin ionad ar éirim agus intlíocht an fhile agus í ochtó cúig do bhlianta. Bhí a guth go cruinn tomhaiste ealaíonta. Bhí sí ag tagairt do shaothair Phaddy de Buis go snasta beomhar blasta. Is iontach an ócáid an Féile Beag Filíochta a chíorann an fhilíocht go dlúth tuiscionach tomhaiste.

Ina dhiaidh sin tháinig Féile Scannán an Daingin. Bhíos ag feachaint ar Kneecap, scannán a tionscnaíodh i mBéal Feirste, agus a cuireadh i lathair in Óstán na Sceilge.

Bhí an láthair plódaithe agus baineadh an-sasamh as an scannán go raibh raidhse Feiceanna ann- iomarca, is dócha.

Ansan thugas cuairt ar Fhéile Liteartha an Daingin. Bhí pearsain aitheanta filí agus údair ag cur asta go gairmiúil ag an bhFéile Liteartha agus cuireadh in úil go raibh fiche cúig milliún do shaothair Celia Ahern díolta ar fuaid na cruinne. Beidh Bertí sásta. Mar chuid den bhféile cuireadh i láthair go leor saothair mar leabhar le Liam Ó Néill agus labhair Peadar Ó Riada ar an leabhar atá scríofa aige tar éis mórán taighde fé Cheoltóirí Chualainn. Chuir an draoi ceoil Peadar cuid do’s na ceolta rómhainn. Tá an- thús geimhridh gafa chugainn.
