On Sunday the 15th of December there will be our annual Christmas market in aid of Focus Ireland.

It will be a big market again, using all 3 floors of the Diseart. We will have space for 40 stalls.

There will also be a tearoom in the libary and a raffle and music

All fees from the tables and income from the tearoom and the raffle will go to Focus Ireland.

last year we managed to raise just over €2000 for the homeless. Let's hope that we can do that again this year.

A Cauldron of Goodness from the Witches’ Kitchen

Seasonal eating is now embraced by many chefs, but long before it became trendy, it was simply a way of life. The turning of the seasons dictated the menu, with Samhain—meaning “Summer’s End”—marking the last harvest of the growing season and preparing people for the colder, darker days ahead. Our ancestors would take stock of what food was harvested, slaughter livestock that were too weak or costly to sustain through winter, and gather remaining crops or fallen fruit. Anything left in the fields after October 31st, the festival of Samhain, was returned to nature as an offering to the Earth.

This time of year was tinged with a sense of finality, reflecting the deathly air of Samhain, much like our modern-day celebration of Halloween. Unfortunately, many of the cultural and spiritual connections with the season have been overshadowed by consumerism. However, the traditions our ancestors followed during Samhain were deeply connected to both the land and their health, preparing them physically and emotionally for winter’s challenges. Today, though the world has changed, we still face similar seasonal health issues like colds, flus, and loneliness. Just as they did, we can turn to the rituals and nourishment of seasonal ingredients to share warmth, good food, and a sense of community.

Samhain falls between the Autumn Equinox and the Winter Solstice. Though it marked the end of the growing season, many foods were preserved to last throughout winter. Traditional fare included nuts like hazels and chestnuts, apples, berries, potatoes, dark bread made from rye, barley, cabbage, root vegetables, and sea vegetables. Dried herbs such as rosemary, mugwort, mullein, sage, and bay were not only used to flavour food but also as medicinal remedies for winter ailments. The livestock slaughtered around Samhain was carefully prepared, cured, or dried to last through the season. In places where game or fish were available, they supplemented winter meals when other meat sources ran low. These foods and the customs surrounding them were not only practical but deeply meaningful, keeping communities connected to the land and each other. Seasonal rituals and remedies were key to sustaining health and well-being through the colder months.

Take rosemary, for instance. Long associated with remembrance, this herb was worn by ancient Greek and Roman scholars to boost memory during study. Today, research shows that the aroma of rosemary can improve memory by as much as 30%. During Samhain, it was customary to hang a sprig of rosemary over doorways to honour loved ones who had passed away. These traditions offered solace in processing grief, helping those left behind to let go of negative emotions and cherish positive memories.

Apples, too, held a special place at the Samhain table. Stored well into winter, they were abundant and rich in symbolism. Before caramel-

coated apples became a Halloween staple, apples were split in two to reveal the five elements of life—Earth, Fire, Water, Air, and Spirit—represented in the formation of their seeds. Samhain games like bobbing for apples, which we still enjoy today, also stemmed from rituals looking toward the future. One such tradition involved peeling an apple in one continuous strip and letting it fall to the ground. The shape of the peel was said to resemble the initial of a future romantic partner—no need for dating apps when you had Granny Smith!

During Samhain, it was believed that the veil between the physical and spiritual worlds was at its thinnest, allowing ancestral spirits to communicate with the living. Warding off evil spirits was essential, too, which is why turnips and mangles were carved into lanterns and placed on windowsills—long before pumpkins became the go-to choice. When Celtic pagans migrated to the U.S., they discovered the pumpkin was much easier to carve and in season during Samhain, making it a natural substitute for the tougher root vegetables they once used.

Another seasonal favourite was Báirín Breac (Barm Brack), a fruitstudded tea loaf baked with symbolic objects tucked inside. Each object held a message for the year ahead:

• The Pea: No marriage for you this year (better luck next Samhain!)

• The Bean: Prosperity and energy are in your future.

• The Rag: A sign of poverty—better save up!

• The Coin: Wealth is headed your way.

• The Ring: A wedding is in the cards this year.

These small rituals were playful ways to predict one’s fortune in love and life while celebrating the bounty of the season.

As we prepare for Samhain today, we can reconnect with these traditions, remembering how our ancestors nourished themselves and their communities for the winter months ahead. By embracing seasonal ingredients and meaningful customs, we not only honour the past but also nurture our health and well-being in the present.

Maharees Conservation Association Wins Big at National Lottery Good Causes Awards

The Maharees Conservation Association took home the top prize in the Heritage category at this year’s National Lottery Good Causes Awards winning an impressive €10,000. The organisation was established in 2016 to enhance, protect, and preserve this unique coastline through community-led climate adaptation.

The Maherees, is renowned for its long, uninterrupted blue-flag beaches and stunning coastline. This area is globally recognised for its spectacular sand dunes, which have unfortunately been severely impacted by the powerful Atlantic swells and strong winter winds.

The volunteer-run charity works closely with residents, visitors, NGOs, state agencies, and the local authority to safeguard the Maharees sand dune system and its habitats, as well as, to preserve the community and heritage of the area. In 2021, the group received funding from the National Lottery Good Causes, which enabled them to develop the Maharees Heritage Trail. This mobile-accessible, self-guided trail features imagery, video, and both text and audio descriptions of 20 points of interest around The Maharees, exploring various aspects of the area’s natural, cultural, living, and built heritage.

The Maharees Conservation Association’s proactive spirit, commitment to environmental protection, and willingness to share knowledge with other coastal communities impressed the judges of the National Lottery Good Causes Awards. Their efforts were recognised with winning the 2024 Heritage category award, highlighting them as a shining example of how local action can make a significant difference.

Groom Fell To His Death

-Tralee Chronicle, 19 January, 1850

When going to his sailing vessel which was lying at the Samphires, Tralee, last Thursday night, Mr. Bevan, Master of the Chandos, fell off the cliff at Kilfenura (sic) and broke his neck.

He was found on Friday morning lying quite dead. The deceased, who was a young man, was married in Blennerville Church on Christmas Day last, only three weeks and two days ago, to a girl from Bristol.

Dingle Guardians in Serious Debt.

-Kerry Examiner, 3 November, 1848

There are 1,100 paupers in the temporary poor houses of Dingle at present and many more apply weekly for admission for whom accommodation cannot be provided.

The Dingle Guardians owe Robert Hickson, Esq, about £800 for Indian meal and are otherwise heavily in debt. The meal expense for the past week was £30 and the milk bill was £18. This is a heavy milk expenditure and too much in proportion.

Treadmill in the County Jail

-Kerry Evening Post, 28 June, 1848

The Treadmill in the County jail in Tralee has been repaired after a long period out of order so that it can now be used again to punish prisoners who have been sentenced to hard labour.

The number of prisoners in the jail is around three times the number intended to accommodate prisoners. We hope the use of the Treadmill will very soon make the jail a place of punishment and that a check will be given to the petty crimes that are daily committed. The jail is currently not feared as it should be.

(The Treadmill doesn’t appear to have reduced crime levels. By the following year the jail, which was built to accommodate 120 prisoners, now held 631. Treadmills were large wide wheels with steps which prisoners climbed for hours while the wheel rotated and exhausted the prisoner.)

Walker Grabs a Salmon

-Tralee Chronicle, 17 August, 1844

Last Monday a drove of porpoises were hunting salmon in a shallow bay in the vicinity of Tarbert. One salmon, in a moment of terror, panic and confusion came too close to the shore and was grabbed by a countryman who was strolling past at the time.

He rushed into the water and seized the fish in his arms. An examination of the salmon showed evidence of its having been bitten by a porpoise. It had a deep gash at the extremity of its back which rendered it an easy catch for its second enemy who was much more destructive than the porpoise.

Transportation for Life

-Kerry Evening Post, 29 July, 1846

A man was placed at the bar of Dingle Court indicted for indecent assault on a local woman. The case occupied the Court for a lengthy period of time. The details were wholly unfit for publication.

The jury returned a verdict of ‘guilty’ after some deliberation. The Court, after dwelling on the enormity of the offence, sentenced the man to Transportation for life.

Cleopatra in Ventry

-Limerick Reporter, 02 May, 1845

At about 5 o’clock on Sunday morning the beautiful sailing vessel Cleopatra of Northumberland, bound for North America with a cargo of bricks and coal was dashed against the cliffs at the mouth of Ventry Harbour.

She had scarcely struck the rocks when she was immediately smashed to pieces. The crew of nine Scotsmen threw themselves into the violent waters and were spotted by a young local lad.

He raised the alarm throughout the area. Soon a large crowd gathered on the cliff at Ballymore and two men went down the cliff with a rope and brought every exhausted crewman safely ashore.

The Cleopatra had only been launched for the first time three weeks ago and now lies a total and costly wreck. The conduct of the poor local people of Ventry was most heroic and generous. They risked their lives for total strangers.

(The Irish Wrecks Online website records the wreck as happening in 1844 –not 1845, the cargo recorded as ‘unknown’ and that she was sailing to Richibuto-a port in New Brunswick.)

Murder in Inch

-Cork Examiner, 12 February, 1844

Three brothers named Michael, Redmond and Ignatious Moriarty held the farm of Mr. Crump Bland at Gloughnahira (Glannaheera?), near Inch Island. They were ejected for some reason and the farm was let to Mr. William Burke of Castlemain (sic). He placed Maurice Wallace and a man named Kennedy in charge of it.

It seems the Moriartys were very indignant at being put off the farm as they had also been put out of another farm at Ballinagroun by the same Mr. Burke. The Kennedy man feared trouble on the way and he left the farm but Wallace stood firm.

On last Friday night he and his son were in the farmhouse when they were alarmed by stones being thrown at their door and gun shots being fired outside.

On Saturday afternoon the body of Wallace was found by a woman near a small stream on the farm. It was reported that Ignatious Moriarty was seen on the farm. A number of witnesses were examined at the inquest but none saw the murder being committed.

The coroner stated that from the wounds on Wallace’s head, death must have been instantaneous. The jury found a verdict of wilful murder against Moriarty who attempted to cross to South Kerry by boat but was arrested by police.

Free Energy Upgrades (Warmer Homes Scheme)

The Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) provides free home energy upgrades to homeowners who get certain social welfare payments. These upgrades help improve the energy efficiency and warmth of your home and are also known as the Warmer Homes Scheme.

The scheme prioritises the oldest and least en ergy efficient homes. You can apply for the free upgrades again if you’ve already had work done under the scheme, but your home would ben efit from more upgrades. To access the scheme again you must still meet the qualifying criteria. If you do not qualify for the free upgrades, the SEAI provides other grants to help with the cost of upgrading the energy efficiency of your home. The National Home Energy Upgrade Scheme provides grants to bring your home up to an energy efficiency rating of B2 or above, using a private company to manage the work. Or, you can get individual energy upgrade grants, if you only want to do certain upgrades, and would prefer to manage the process yourself.

How does the scheme work?

There are 4 steps to this process:

will I know if my home is suitable?

The SEAI will review your application and check if you are eligible. They will then assess if your home is suitable for the work. A surveyor acting for the SEAI will arrange to call to your home to do this. They will complete a survey of your home, which involves:

Walking around the inside and outside of your home, including the attic

Assessing the overall suitability of your home for energy efficiency upgrades

Measuring, photographing and recording information about your home

What energy upgrades are available through the Warmer Homes Scheme?

1. Apply for the scheme online or by completing an application form and sending it back to the SEAI. You must ensure you meet the qualifying criteria above when applying. You can use the SEAI online portal to check if you qualify.

2. Have an SEAI surveyor check your home is suitable for the works and recommend upgrades. The SEAI will do this if you qualify.

What happens after I have been approved for the Scheme?

If your home is suitable for the upgrades a contractor will be appointed by the SEAI to do the work on your home.

The scheme covers these home energy upgrades:

• Attic insulation

• Wall insulation - including cavity wall, internal wall and external wall insulation

• Draught-proofing

• Lagging jackets

• Energy efficient lighting

• Energy advice

New central heating systems and replacement windows are also occasionally covered by the scheme. Your windows will only be replaced if your walls are being insulated at the same time and the existing windows are single-glazed windows. The SEAI decides if replacement windows are needed on a case by case basis.

Do I qualify for the scheme?

To qualify for this scheme you must meet the following criteria:

• You must own your home and be living in it

• Your home must have been built and occupied before 2006

• Your home must have a BER of C,D,E,F or G

• You must be getting one of the following social welfare payments:

o Fuel Allowance

o Working Family Payment

o Jobseeker’s Allowance for over 6 months and have a child aged under 7

o Disability Allowance for over 6 months and have a child aged under

3. Get the works done by a contractor appointed by the SEAI

4. Get the works assessed by the SEAI once the works are completed. This will include a new BER assessment and may involve a quality inspection.

How can I apply?

You can apply online. Alternatively you can download and complete the application form from seai.ie. You can also get an application form from your local Citizens Information Centre. You must meet the qualifying criteria. You can use the SEAI online portal to check this or speak with your local Citizens Information Centre.

You need to provide evidence that you qualify for the scheme. Full details of the information needed are on the application form.

If you are getting a qualifying payment other than Carer's Allowance, you no longer need to get the Department of Social Protection to complete part of the application form. The SEAI will check your eligibility with the DSP.

If you qualify for the scheme because you are getting Carers Allowance, you must also complete the Carer's Allowance Confirmation Form , which you can get from your local Citizens Information Centre or download from www. seai.ie

How long does it take to get work done under the Scheme?

The process from application to completion of works usually takes between 24 and 26 months, though this may vary.

The contractor will visit your home to assess the works needed. They will then explain their recommendations to you, and agree a schedule for the work. You should have a written contract with the contractor, which clearly states the work you have agreed to.

When the work is completed, the contractor will give you documentation about the work, including any warranties. It is important to keep these safe, as you may need them in the future. A Building Energy Rating (BER) is carried out on all homes after the works are complete to assess the building’s energy performance. A BER certificate and advisory report will be sent to you and will also be published on the SEAI’s national BER register.

Some homes will also be inspected to ensure that the works meet the required standards.

How much will it cost?

You will not be charged for work done under this scheme. However, if you sell your home within 5 years of getting the work done, you need to tell the SEAI. You should inform them in writing at least 30 days before your property is sold. The SEAI may ask you to repay some or all of the grant. This is at their discretion.

It was a pleasure to share our beloved Ukrainian cuisine with the local community, and we were especially touched by the children's enthusiasm for trying our traditional dishes. We are deeply grateful for the warm welcome and support we received from the people of Dingle. The lovely atmosphere and friendly faces made our experience at the festival truly unforgettable. Launch of Halloween Door Hangers

Following on from our success of the Garda Door Hangers Initiative last year , Kerry Gardaí will again be distributing our Halloween Door Hangers that will enable homes to show that they are welcoming Trick of Treaters to the door.

For a variety of reasons, some homes cannot partake in the Halloween tradition and this can lead to confusion and upset for those in costume.

So to help everyone enjoy Halloween, we are encouraging the use of our door hanger to clearly let everyone know whether or not they are taking part in Trick or Treating, and make for a more enjoyable Halloween night for everyone.

We are distributing them in the community at present but if you would like one please pop into anyone of the following Garda Stations, Tralee, Listowel, Killarney, Caherciveen & Dingle. They will also be available in all Kerry Libraries. These door hangers are available bilingually for use in Irish speaking households both in the Gaeltacht and throughout the county.

As part of the 2024 Blas ns hEireann awards, a foodie quiz was hosted by Conal in McCarthys pub on Thursday October 3rd and the proceeds of the night of 320 went to Silver Bia Meals on Wheels. Gairdin Mhuire Day Centre also received some delicious award winning turkey and ham, cakes and treats that were enjoyed by all the clients of the Gairdin Mhuire Day Centre.

Katie’s #CoffeeForCancer took place on Saturday October 19th at Inch Coffee where many gathered for coffee, cake, and traditional music. The day was a great success! Thank you to all who joined on the day and contributed in any way.

Kids Halloween Party: Sunday 27th October 4-6pm at Inch Community Centre. Kids Disco and lots of treats. Prizes for best fancy dress. Come and meet Kenny the Clown! €6 entry. Kenny the clown from Bespoke Balloons In A Box will be there creating his amazing balloons art.

Clean-up and Maintenance Days will take place on the following Saturdays from 10am-12pm. For clean-ups, bags will be provided. Pickers and high-vis vests might also be provided but please bring your own if you have them.

Thursday 24th Oct is our Bingo Fundraiser in aid of the Inch-Annascaul Community First Responders group. All funds raised will go towards the purchasing of new defibrillators.

Doors open at 6.45pm and bingo starts at 7.30pm. Books are €10 - Jackpot sheets are €2 - and raffle tickets are 3 for €5. There is a guaranteed jackpot of €500. Refreshments served at half time and the community first responders will have a demonstration for us. Your support would be very much appreciated.

Senior citizen community lunches at Inch Community Centre V92HK31 on at 1pm on the 5th November and every second Tuesday. All are welcome.

A Quiz Night will take place on Saturday 30th November at 8pm at Foley’s Bar Inch. Maximum 4 in a team. €10 per person. Raffle on the night.

Inch Farmers Market will take place on the following Saturdays from 10am-2pm at Foley’s Beer Garden: 9th November and 7th December. If you are interested in a spot, please contact inchfarmersmarket@gmail. com

There is the opportunity to be involved through a cooperatively run farm produce stand. This is for farmers that don’t have enough produce, variety or hours to warrant a stall themselves and allows locally grown produce to be available in the community. If anyone has extra veg etc. that they would like to sell, get in touch!

CAMP COMMUNITY COUNCIL LTD

Camp Playground has reopened and looks great. The Playground is a wonderful community facility. The upgrade was supported by Clar Funding from the Department of Rural and Community Dev.

Camp Community Council Ltd welcomed an allocation of €37,989 through the Community Sports facilities Fund towards LED floodlights upgrade, new fencing and goalposts. All funding is greatly appreciated and it is great to see all the hard work and voluntary contribution over the years acknowledged. The old Irish proverb surely runs true in Camp, Is ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine?

OCEAN VIEW

The news on Wednesday morning that Raida Healthcare has purchased Ocean View Nursing is wonderful and is welcomed by the residents, their relatives and staff of Ocean View as well as by the entire community of West Kerry.

It is indeed encouraging to see all our political parties work together in support of Ocean View. Norma Foley, FF, Minister for Education, Michael Healy Rae Independent, Pa Daly, SF and Councillors, Tommy Griffin FG, Deirdre Ferris SF and Councillor Robert Brosnan SF who called the meetings and all our public representatives, Shane Scanlon, Alliance Network for Nursing Homes and the HSE all deserve the be highly commended. Well done all. Wishing Teresa and staff and the residents of Ocean View well in their transition over the next weeks.

CAMPFEST

Camp Fest celebrated their 20th Anniversary in style at The Railway Tavern over the weekend.

A huge convoy of VW, Camper Vans and cars of all shapes and sizes made their way around the peninsula on Saturday morning on their annual run. Eoghan O’Neill was out front in his late fathers Volkswagen Beetle car, beautifully kept and maintained by the family. Mike was surely looking down and it is so wonderful to see his vibrant legacy, CampFest, an event which Mike started 20 years ago getting even bigger and better over the years.

It was a great weekend for the area too, at this time of the year, accommodation filled and all restaurants and bars very busy for the entire weekend, some even arriving on Thursday night.

Well done to all at The Railway Tavern and The Junction Bar and Restaurant who managed to feed everybody and everyone who helped out in any way. Well done all. And all the visitors who come every year and take part and enjoy CampFest, they are all very welcome in Camp. And long may this wonderful event continue for many years ahead, le cúnamh Dé.

Spiced Butternut Squash and Spinach

This spiced butternut squash pasta bake is a warming, easy dish perfect for a cosy autumn evening. Roasted butternut squash is blended with a little spice, creating a creamy sauce that hugs the pasta. Mixed with mozzarella to give some creaminess, then baked until perfectly crisp, this dish delivers both flavour and comfort in every bite. Its earthy sweetness and gentle spice make it ideal for those chilly nights when you want something both satisfying and simple. A delicious, fuss-free meal that fills your home with the warmth of the season.

Ingredients

500g penne pasta

1 onion, diced

2 cloves garlic, peeled and crushed

1 butternut squash, peeled, seeds removed and cut into medium dice

1 tsp. mild curry powder

1 tsp. ground cumin

½ tsp. red chilli flakes

200ml chicken or vegetable stock

2 mozzarella balls, torn into small pieces

200g spinach, washed some parmesan for grating

dash of olive oil

salt and pepper

Method

Preheat the oven to 180ºC

Cook the pasta in a pot of boing salted water

until al dente, strain and keep a little of the pasta water.

Put an oven proof casserole dish over medium heat, add a little oil and add the onion and garlic. Cook this for about 5 minutes, add the butternut squash and spices. Stir and cook for about 5 minutes. Add the stock and allow this to simmer. Allow this to cook for about 15 minutes, at this stage the squash should be cooked and soft. Add the torn mozzarella, pasta, a lit-

tle of the pasta water and the spinach. Mix this well. Place the dish in the oven. Cook for about 15- 20 minutes.

Remove from the oven and add a grate some parmesan over it return to the oven for about 5 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool for a few minutes before serving.

Céiliúradh Harry Clarke sa Díseart

p, As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of Harry Clarke’s vision for the Chapel of the Presentation Convent, now part of the Díseart Institute of Irish Spirituality and Culture, this lecture will explore the artistry, individuality, and inventiveness of Clarke’s work in glass. It will consider Clarke’s response to the complexities of the age he lived in, not least the turbulence of Irish politics, the cultural revival, and modernism.

Tabharfar léargas ar conas mar a tháinig sé i dtír ar ar cheisteanna casta a ré fhéin , go háirithe an pholaitíocht suaite, an athbheochan chultúra agus an nua-aoiseachtas.

Dr Ann Wilson lectures in Visual Culture in the Crawford College of Art and Design, MTU, Cork. She has published articles on the imagery and decoration of neo Gothic Irish churches, including several papers on St. Colman’s Cathedral in Cobh and a book on S t. Finbarr’s Cathedral in Cork. She has also published articles and chapters on Irish Catholic visual culture and revivalism, and specifically on the work of the Irish sculptor Seamus Murphy and the stained -glass artist Harry Clarke. She has also recently published a book on picture postcard culture in early twentieth -century Ireland.

Housing for All

Delighted to get contracts signed at the start of October for a 27-unit scheme which is located within the former Denny factory site in Tralee town centre. Tearmann na nGéanna, is located on Matt Talbot Road, and will consist of 22 one-bedroom apartments and five two-bedroom apartments. Construction work is due to commence shortly on this new housing development at the Island of Geese in Tralee. Kerry County Council is delivering housing and we are asking for more plans to be made for the continued development of more social housing and new affordable housing within the county.

Well done to Declan Keogh, Kerry County Council Road Safety Officer on organising an 'Older Drivers' Road Safety Conference along with Age Friendly Kerry and supported by the Kerry Division of An Garda Síochána, the Road Safety Authority and the Older Peoples Council. These weekly SLT sessions commenced in September 2024 and are predominantly offered to families of children with Down Syndrome in the region, but other clients are also facilitated. Kerry Homecoming Festival at Halloween

What a great night in Fitzgerald Stadium, Killarney for the official opening of the Kerry Homecoming Festival at Halloween. The festival is presented by Kerry County Council, supported by Fáilte Ireland and the Dept of Foreign Affairs as part of the Global Irish Festival Series. The programme features 50 free events including a Samhain street spectacle events in Dingle, Listowel, Tralee and Kenmare as well as a range of family friendly, heritage, storytelling workshops, talks and community festivals.

Honoured to represent Kerry County Council as Cathaoirleach at the Kerry Association in Dublin Oíche Chiarraí 2024. Great to see the once-off Christmas Support Allocation of funds to support Christmas markets and Christmas lights in rural towns in County Kerry. Under this scheme Dingle Business Chamber were allocated €4,000 and Milltown Town Team allocated €3,000.

Message from Fr Michael

While in college I had the opportunity, one summer, to work in Marymount College just outside Washington DC. The work involved light maintenance around the college campus. While there I met some Marymount Sisters from Ireland, some of whom had just retired from a life of educating. These Sisters were among the thirty thousand Irish missionaries who left this country over a fifty-year period from 1920 to 1970 to share their faith with others. While on the campus we visited the convent cemetery and as I walked around I noted the names on the tombstones – O’Neill, Murphy, Quinn, Power, Cahill.

This cemetery is a monument to the generosity, courage and faith of Irish women who left behind family, friends and parish to share the Gospel message. Very often these women were pioneers in education, healthcare and expressions of charity and support. They took seriously the message of Jesus: ‘as the Father has sent me so am I sending you.’ (John 20:21). The faith of these missionaries, born in Baptism, nourished by family, led them to the four corners of the earth.

The cemetery is but one of many throughout the world that witness to the Irish missionary spirit. In the month of October, we pray for missionaries, especially those whose ministry is difficult or dangerous, and we ask the Lord of the harvest to send further labourers to the harvest. Sunday 20th October was Mission Sunday. We might be led to believe that Mission Sunday is celebrated in this part of the world and we support the poorer places with our prayers and financial help. The reality is the right throughout the world in the remotest and poorest places, people gather in faith to celebrate

Mission Sunday, and they also give what they can to help support the Mission of the Church.

The number of priests, sisters and religious leaving our shores has decreased in recent years but the mission continues. When parents pray with their children, they become missionaries, handing on the faith to the next generations. That is mission! Mission is faith in action. Mission is about loving Christ, being guided by his teaching and example, and living that out in the workplace and in the community or wherever we find ourselves. Today’s missionaries are parents who have love and prayer in the home as cornerstones of their lives. Today’s missionaries are young people who pray and cherish God’s creation, care for it and protect it. Today’s missionaries see human life at all stages as a precious gift from God. Todays missionaries try to live a life of service to others. World Mission Sunday challenges us to reflect on how we are living out our baptismal calling to witness to Christ in all situations and not to give up. It invites us to deepen our love of Christ, to welcome the power of the Holy Spirit afresh into our lives, and to be living examples – wherever we are and whoever we are – of the Father’s care for all of creation. If you would like to support the work of our Missionaries, please place your donation in an envelope and place it in the basket during Mass or in one of the boxes at the back of the churches. Together, we are mission!

Thursday November 14th – 7.30pm in St Mary’s Church, Camp. Friday November 15th – 6.15pm in St. Mary’s Church, Dingle. Saturday November 16th – 7.30pm in Sacred Heart Church, Annascaul. On Friday November 15th in St Mary’s Church, Dingle we will remember by name all those who died since last November. If anybody wishes to have a deceased relative or friend who has died, away, over the past 12 months remembered at this Mass, contact Dingle Parish Office by Wednesday November 13th. All who died in the Parish will automatically be included.

An addict, any addict, can stop using drugs, lose the desire to use and find a new way to live.

Anyone who wants to stop using drugs may become a member of Narcotics Anonymous. Membership is not limited to addicts using any particular drug. Those who feel they may have a problem with drugs, legal or illegal, including alcohol, are welcome in NA. Recovery in NA focuses on the problem of addiction, not on any particular drug.

Our program of recovery begins with abstinence from all drugs, including alcohol. Sometimes people come to NA meetings while still using drugs, detoxing from drugs, or on drug replacement therapy. Regardless of what you may be taking when you first come to NA, you are welcome. NA’s primary approach to recovery is its belief in the therapeutic value of one addict helping another. Members take part in NA meetings by talking about their experiences and recovery from drug addiction. The NA programme is one of complete abstinence from all drugs, including alcohol.

Narcotics Anonymous is not a religious organization. It does teach basic spiritual principles such as honesty, open-mindedness, faith, willingness, and humility that may be applied in everyday life. Recovery in NA is a process, ongoing and personal. Members make an individual decision to join and recover at their own pace.

Our experience in NA is that those who keep coming to our meetings regularly stay clean.
