Mórchuaird Tarracóra Chorca
Dhuibhne/ West Kerry Tractor
Run
It’s almost that time of year again to polish up the modern day workhorses of West Kerry farms and take part in MÓRCHUAIRD TARRACÓRA CHORCA DHUIBHNE/ WEST KERRY TRACTOR RUN.. We are on track to roll out on Sunday 24th November from John Liston’s Eco Farm in Lios Póil at 12 o’clock sharp (registration begins at 11am).
We are taking a shorter route this year from Lios Póil through Dingle Town and then taking the low road to Ventry. The cavalcade will then turn up past Ventry Post office and return to Dingle via the back road from Ventry. It will finish up with a lap of Dingle town. As always, only licenced drivers in roadworthy vehicles with Third Party, Fire & Theft insurance will be permitted to take part. We would kindly ask all participants to follow the instructions of stewards.
We are raising funds for two very worthy charities again this year:
• Friends of West Kerry Community Hospital and
• The Irish Lung Fibrosis Association.
The tractor run has raised over €100,000 since it began and our main beneficiaries have used these funds to great effect.
The success of the tractor run so far would not have been possible if it was not for the generosity of the West Kerry community. The committee would be extremely thankful for any sponsorship or donations to support our worthy charities again this year. There will bucket collection on the day or alternatively funds can be transferred to the tractor run credit union account. There is also a Go Fund Me page (gofund.me/09c0ed2c).
The event is however, about awareness as much as it is about fundraising so we would urge anyone who is unable to give financially to contribute by helping to raise profile of the charities and promote awareness of the important work they do.

Giddy Up your Defenses with Horseradish!
Irene Flannery
It is neither horse nor radish, yet the horseradish has enjoyed its wonderful name since around the time of the Renaissance! Perhaps a type of food renaissance during the Middle Ages brought horseradish out of the medicine cabinets and onto the tables of the good folk of Europe in the 1500s. It is thought its name came from a misinterpretation of its German name “Meerrettich” (sea radish), which was incorrectly translated as Mare Radish and from there became Horseradish. The ancient Greeks and Egyptians used horseradish as a medicine for a wide range of ailments including intestinal worms, coughs, gout, scurvy, food poisoning, tuberculosis, colic and rheumatism. They also held it in high esteem as an aphrodisiac! Not sure how that worked out considering its heat and pungency but those loved-up southerners seemed to be eager to try out all sorts of food items for those intimate moments! Whether they just liked food in the bedroom or courting in the kitchen, there was some aphrodisiac on the menu everyday! All that aside, much of today’s research into the health benefits of horseradish proves the Greeks and Egyptians were on the ball with most of their claims and there is much more to horseradish than beef and oysters!
Horseradish belongs to the Cruciferous family of vegetables that also include broccoli, brussles sprouts, cabbage, mustard, cauliflower and kale. This specific group of vegetables are well noted for a compound known as Glucosinulates, which have been identified as being protective against cancer growth. Horseradish has 10 times the glucosinulate content of broccoli, meaning that just a little is enough to promote the identification and destruction of malignant cells. Fortunately for us, whether in medicine or as food, a little horseradish goes a long way! It is a root vegetable that acts like spice which has been served alongside roast beef and oysters since the 1700s. It is said that Inn keepers serving travelling horsemen back then used horseradish to disguise the fact that their meat and fish were long past the best before date! Little did they know, horseradish worked both ways promoting the secretion of mucous to coat the intestinal linings while providing protection to the weary travellers by way of its antibacterial properties, ultimately protecting them from the putrid meats.
The Old Testament cites horseradish as one of the five bitter herbs along with coriander, nettle, horehound and lettuce, traditionally served at Passover. Its role as a digestive aid is well established down through the ages, however, those with colitis, ulcers, gastritis and inflammatory bowel disease should avoid it like the plague!
Horseradish is also known as a remedy for urinary tract and bladder infections. It has strong diuretic properties that promotes urination, helping to reduce the risk of bacterial infections, kidney stones and fluid retention. Because of its effective diuretic qualities do not use if taking blood pressure medication or any other diuretic. More recently it has been used to clear congestion from the respiratory tract including the sinuses, for lung congestion and bronchitis. Again, it promotes mucous secretions, loosening congestion and clearing the airways of bacteria and viruses. Merely grating it will get your own respiratory juices flowing from its pungent aroma alone! Its use as a remedy involves grating fresh
horseradish and ingesting it raw or mixed in apple cider vinegar (for preservation) and honey to sweeten the taste. Modern day medicinal recipes may add garlic or ginger for an extra punch! It is also used in a poultice, both the root and the leaves, for the treatment of lower back pain and rheumatism, directing heat into the affected areas. Tea made from the simmered root or the leaves can be used as a gargle for strep throats, tonsillitis and toothaches. It has both an antiseptic and analgesic quality that can relieve pain and fight infection at the same time.
Horseradish, with its strong flavour and protective qualities complements the Autumn and Winter seasons perfectly, both as a culinary and medicinal ingredient. When colds, flus, respiratory ailments and tummy bugs are at their peak, a daily dose of horseradish might just be the “root” to a symptom-free season. Fresh horseradish is in season now and available in most fruit and veg shops. Horseradish looks like a small parsnip except its more gnarly and rough and may have brown marks on the skin. It should feel firm to touch with no soft bruises or mould. Prepare by peeling with a veg scraper and finely grate enough for the remedy or dish at hand. Store unwrapped in the veg box of the fridge. Add to mashed potato, meat sauces, stews or sprinkle on meat, fish and vegetables. Remember, you only need a little.
As a remedy: Prepare the following ingredients: 125g grated horseradish, juice of 4 lemons, 3cm grated ginger,2 tsp cinnamon and 4 tbsp honey – whizz in a blender with enough cooled boiled water to make a paste. Transfer to a clean jar and refrigerate. Take 1-2 tablespoons daily before meals or dilute in a little boiled water to make a gargle. You might want to start off with half a teaspoon and work your way up to this dose. Once prepared, it will keep in the fridge for a week or so. Even though it might be hard to swallow at first, it is worth a try to keep the bugs away and the lovers a little closer!

Plunder, Shooting, Drink and Death
-Berkshire Chronicle, 14 December, 1833
The schooner City of Limerick left that port on November 29 with a cargo of beef, bacon, butter and whiskey and encountered a raging storm as she left the Shannon. She was struck by a massive wave and ended up being driven ashore in Ballybunion.
Hundreds of people had gathered on the cliffs to watch the fate of the vessel. As soon as she struck on the strand they raced down to where she was being dashed to pieces. The ship’s Master, Mr. Cooper, the Mate and the crew escaped the wreck and came ashore.
They were immediately set upon by the peasantry. The Master was robbed of a small parcel. The Mate was relieved of his watch and the mob attempted to strip the unfortunate sailors.
The Coast Guards arrived and attempted to save the crew from violence and protect the cargo from plunder but by now the plunderers had increased substantially. The bottom of the ship had broken open, large casks of whiskey were discharged into the sea and were set upon by the mob.
The Coast Guard fired on the mob and one man was shot. This inflamed the passion of the plunderers and the Coast Guards were obliged to run for their lives.
The plunder continued and cartloads of the cargo were spirited away into the countryside. Many of the wretches were observed stretched on the beach drinking copious amounts of whiskey which resulted in the death of at least seven people.
Eventually, reinforcements of police and military arrived to aid the Coast Guards. They also began a search of the countryside for the immense amount of cargo which had been plundered.
Distress in Dingle
-Dublin Evening Packet, 28 February, 1837
Nothing can exceed the acute stress being experienced by the people of Dingle and the neighbourhood. Not a hedge has been left standing in the surrounding countryside as all have been cut down for firewood. A letter from a resident there states that unless the weather improves numbers of poor people will perish for want of fire to cook their food. Crowds of miserable beings are obliged to go up to four miles and then climb mountains for heather to boil their potatoes.
Some people have almost removed the entire roof of their cabins for fuel and found it necessary to burn their wretched stock of furniture to preserve a temporary existence.
The bogs in the neighbourhood of Dingle are nearly all cut away and the very little turf in the county is so wet this year that it will not burn.
Lovers to be Hanged
-Waterford Mail, 27 March, 1830
At the Kerry Assizes Denis McCarthy, a farmer aged 49, and Ellen Connell, aged 36, were indicted for the wilful murder of John Connell, Husband of Ellen Connell, on the 4th of January last near the tower of Caherciveen. The male prisoner was the lover of the deceased’s wife.
The wife confessed the murder to a policeman named Day. She stated that McCarthy sprang upon her husband, seized him by the cravat and strangled him. She said she did not assist but called on McCarthy to stop; however, she did not call out any alarm.
There was a long exchange between the Court and counsel and after two precedents had been mentioned it was decided to have a new trial. The jury found both prisoners guilty and the judge, Baron Richard Pennefather, sentenced both prisoners to be hanged on Monday. McCarthy did not seem the least affected during the trial and neither did the woman. McCarthy merely asked what would become of his body. Ellen Connell clapped her hands and asked what was to be done with her children. The trial had lasted for nine and a half hours.
100 Kerry Criminals Transported
-Limerick Reporter, 03 April, 1849
At the Kerry Assizes on Monday and Tuesday Baron Richards was occupied until a late hour on both nights. His Lordship tried each prisoner with the greatest rapidity and was transporting the poor wretches at the rate of four every hour.
The punishments inflicted were severe and transportation was the rule while a prison sentence was the exception. No less than 100 were to be transported.
Roaring Watchmen – a Letter to the Editor.
-Kerry Evening Post, 15 March, 1848
Sir – Permit me to call on the attentions of the persons, who as “Watchmen” perambulate our streets nightly roaring out, at the utmost pitch of their voices the hours of the clock and the state of the weather.
To watch is one thing but to awaken the sleeping inhabitants of the town is another. There is a great difference between the use and abuse of anything.
To the healthy, this nightly watch-bellowing is a nuisance; to the sick it is cruelty and to those who are in fever it might be death.
Signed, An Invalid
(There was probably much more shouting in the streets on the nights following the above date.)
The Road from Smerwick to Ferriter’s Cove
-Kerry Examiner, 30 July, 1841
On Monday and Tuesday at the Kerry Assizes the Grand Jury dealt with contracts and other financial business of the County. When the contract for making a new road from Smerwick Harbour to Ferriter’s Cove, at a cost of over £50, was submitted it appears that the Magistrates of Dingle had an alternative proposal.
They had approved almost £34 provided the remainder of the £50 was to be subscribed by the Earl of Cork. Mr. John O’Connell of the Grand Jury stated that Lord Cork liberally supports all public works that benefit the County. The original amount of £50 was passed by the Grand Jury.

News From Dingle Hub
ENERGY EFFICIENCY WORKSHOP FOR YOUR BUSINESS 20th NOVEMBER – sign up through our community platform: https://engaged. dcsixtechnologies.com/
Key Findings from the Energy Master Plan (EMP)
The Energy Master Plan (EMP), developed through engagement with local businesses, revealed that many businesses were uncertain about how to read their energy bills or unaware of the potential benefits of
working with an energy broker. For instance, one average-sized B&B saved €3,000 per annum by simply switching energy providers after a brief phone call with an energy broker.
The plan also highlights the significant potential of solar PV (photovoltaic) systems for tourism businesses, particularly those in towns that experience higher footfall during the summer months. A 13-bedroom guesthouse in Dingle installed an 8kWp solar PV system, which now meets 50% of its electricity needs and offers a payback period of just four years.
Energy Efficiency Opportunities
Free SEAI energy audits and site visits conducted through the EMP revealed that many businesses, particularly in the hospitality sector, were using outdated kitchen and laundry appliances—often over 10 years old. Upgrading to more energy-efficient models will provide substantial energy savings.
Encouragingly, many of the EMP’s recommendations involve low or no-cost solutions. Simple measures like staff training and behavioral changes can yield significant results without the need for large-scale investment.
Call to Action: Winter Workshops and Solar Group Buying Scheme
The SEC is calling on local businesses to take action by participating in a Solar PV Meitheal and attending a series of winter energy efficiency workshops. These workshops will focus on energy efficiency and food waste reduction, with specific sessions designed for hospitality kitchen and waiting staff to drive behavioral changes and improve sustainability practices. Any business interested in collectively coming together as a group and letting us get the best price for you please contact ann@ dinglehub.com or sign up to the Enpower community platform https:// engaged.dcsixtechnologies.com/

Intrepid Six Conquer The Four Peaks
Murphy, Karen Nicholson, Patrick Sheehy, Maurice O'Halloran, Ursula Vickers and Niall Flannery at the summit of Carrauntoohil having completed their 'Four Peaks Challenge' for the Kerry Hospice over the recent Bank Holiday weekend.
The challenge involved climbing the highest mountain in each of Ireland’s four provinces.
Starting in County Mayo at 5.15am the six climbed Mweelrea in heavy mist before returning to their transport for 8am and taking a 6 hour drive to Slieve Donard in County Down. They completed the second ascent in 3 hours 20 minutes in strong wind and rain. Lugnaquilla in Wicklow proved to be a tough night time climb with visibility down to 5 metres, Maurice O' Halloran expertly navigated the team the 4.5km to the top. The team finished their adventure back in the Kingdom where the reached the highest point in the country, Carrauntoohil, just after 8.30am, completing the challenge in 27hrs and 19mins.
The team would like to thank all who have contributed to this most worthy charity as well as Kerry Petroleum for sponsoring their fuel and T.J O'Connor for providing the transport.
So far over €12000 has been raised for Kerry Hospice through their Go Fund Me page which is still open for donations (scan QR code). Sculptor Ben Dearnley has kindly donated a piece commemorating this challenge which will be auctioned in the next few weeks.

Roast Plum and Apple, Cardamom and Orange Yogurt
Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School
This dish brings together the sweetness of roasted plums and apples with a fragrant, creamy twist of orange and cardamom yogurt. Perfect as a light dessert, the combination of warm, caramelised fruit offers a balance of tart and sweet flavours. Roasting enhances the fruits' natural sugars, creating a soft, jammy texture that pairs beautifully with the cool, tangy yogurt. The hint of orange and cardamom adds warmth and depth, making it a comforting, elegant option to showcase the fruit. A simple yet sophisticated dish that will leave you wanting more.
Serves 4
Ingredients
For the fruit
1 tbsp. butter
6-8 plums, halved and stone removed
3-4 apples, cored and cut into bite sized chunks
dash of balsamic vinegar
dash of dark rum (optional)
For the yogurt
6-8 cardamom pods
1 orange, juiced and zested
½ tsp. icing sugar
150ml natural yogurt
For the garnish
chocolate shavings- use a vegetable peeler on a bar of dark chocolate some biscuit, crushed to make crumbs mint leaves
Method
For the fruit
Put a pan on over medium heat. Add the butter and when it starts to foam add the fruit and the sugar. Cook this for about 5 minutes - the fruit should have browned and softened a little by this stage. Mix in the balsamic vinegar, add the rum and cook for a minute or two to burn off the alcohol.
For the yogurt
Remove the seeds from the cardamom pods and crush them with a rolling pin. Add all of the ingredients to a bowl and mix well.
To serve
Divide the fruit between four bowls, spoon some of the yogurt over the warm fruit. Sprinkle a little chocolate and crushed biscuit over the yogurt. Put a mint leaf on top to decorate.

1 Year of Palestine Vigils in Dingle
There has been a vigil for Palestine every Friday at 6pm at the old boatyard in Dingle since 17th November last year. All are welcome to attend. During the winter we bring a candle each and remember those who have lost their lives in the conflict. We would encourage people to make an effort for the 15th November to mark our 1st anniversary. There is also a protest at Shannon airport on the 12th November against the use of Shannon for US military flights refuelling en route to Israel. Bigi linn! - Corca Dhuibhne don Phalaistín
The View from the Chair
Honoured, as Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, to address delegates to the Kerry Comhairle na nÓg Conference in the Rose Hotel. I warmly welcomed all the participants and wished them well in their discussions and deliberations during the day. As you know, Comhairle na nÓg in Kerry is proudly supported by Kerry County Council and we greatly value the role and input of the Comhairle into the debates and discussions on issues of concern to young people in Kerry and to wider policy in general. Mol an oige agus tiocfaidh sí.
Dingle Launches Sustainable Energy Community Master Plan
As part of the Climate Action plan, each local authority was required to identify and develop plans for a Decarbonising Zone, an area where a range of climate mitigation, adaptation and biodiversity actions are envisaged to respond to climate change. The area identified in Kerry was the Corca Dhuibhne/Dingle Peninsula Decarbonising Zone.
As part of this, the Corca Dhuibhne Tourism and Hospitality Sustainable Energy Community (or SEC) launched in March 2023. The shared goal of the SEC is to promote energy efficiency, to use renewable energy; and to develop de-centralised energy supplies. The SEC’s first project was the completion of this Energy Master Plan (EMP). From the energy master plan, the SEC has created a roadmap for businesses to get on their sustainability journey today. Kerry County Council has supported this project financially, along with Fáilte Ireland, Údaras na Gaeltachta, SEAI, Dingle Hub, and the Dingle Peninsula Tourism Alliance.
Forum for Promoting Community Safety in the Kerry Division
Delighted to attend this forum which is dedicated to enhancing community safety and fostering positive relationships between An Garda Síochána and the community. I took the opportunity to contribute and provide feedback on the Policing Plan for 2025 and other policing initiatives. Thanks to An Garda Síochána members who provided presentations on various topics, ranging from roads policing to crime prevention, followed by an open discussion.
Contracts Signed For 34 New Homes in Dingle
As Cathaoirleach of Kerry County Council, it was great to sign the contracts for the delivery of 34 new homes at Ballybeg, Dingle which will be constructed over the next year and a half. The homes at Sruthán Sléibhe will comprise 22 onebed apartments and 12 two-bedroom units and will cost €10.5m. I have requested Kerry County Council to continue planning for the delivery of more affordable and social homes in all of West Kerry.
Mayors for Peace Signing Ceremony
Honoured to represent Kerry County Council at Mayors for Peace Signing Ceremony with Mayor of Hiroshima Mr. Kazumi Matsui in Leinster House. Thanks to Ceann Comhairle Dáil Éireann, Seán Ó Fearghaíl TD, Japanese Ambassador to Ireland Maruyama Norio, Sen Mark Daly for organising this very worthwhile initiative #MayorsforPeace
Kerry Ambassador Programme
Privileged to welcome our Kerry Ambassadors as they explored the significance of place and landscape running through Kerry’s successful businesses and people. The Kerry Ambassador Programme has been created for community and industry leaders who are interested in supporting the county by influencing and attracting business events and investment opportunities to Kerry in order to make Kerry a better place to visit, work and live. Well done to Nuala Moore who gave
the Ambassadors a wonderful talk on her many experiences which she has recounted in her book ‘Limitless’.

Solar Systems
Tom Kennedy
Solar..panels or tubes, what's the difference? Well they both provide hot water when heated by the sun’s energy, thus saving you energy, be it oil, gas or electricity.
CE Scheme Vacancy: The role will be to assist in the kitchen and include assisting the cook when and as required, deep kitchen cleaning, venue prep/ set-up for the weekly dinner and assisting with the delivery of the entertainment programme. Contact: castleactiveretired@ gmail.com 085 43 2251.
A solar system will save up to 70% of your annual hot water bill. When it comes to tubes versus panels, the tubes are marginally more efficient than panels, but realistically the difference is small, especially when we have had such a great spell of sunshine.
There is another "solar system" known in the trade as "Thermodynamic" this is a solar panel that works in the dark. Yes with no sunshine, you ask how!
Whist: Every Thursday evening in the Clubrooms from 8pm. Newcomers and Learners welcome.
30/10/24: Ladies: 1st Anne Kavanagh 2nd: Catherine Lyons Intervals: Sandra Hoffman, Mary Devane Gents: 1st: Brid Baker 2nd: Mary Shanahan- Intervals: Mary McKenna, Thomas Maunsell, John McEnery Mystery:-Marcia Ganter
Well the answer is simple really, it's not a solar panel it's a heat pump. The way it works is a panel is fitted to your roof which is connected to a unit and cylinder in your hot press. This is a compressor similar to what's found in a fridge, this unit pumps a refrigerant gas into the panel where it heats due to the fact that the gas has a very low boiling point of about -25 Celsius so this hot gas comes back into the unit, where the gas is compressed to make it hotter, the heat is then transferred to create heat. However, this unit is dependant on electricity to operate so while saving money on heating hot water it does so at a cost.
Take for example a typical family home with 3 to 5 occupants, costs on average about €1,500 to €2,000 per year to heat, of which about a 1/4 to 1/3 of this is hot water, so a typical hot water bill for a family of 5 is somewhere in the region of €450 to €650 a year.

31/10/24 Ladies: 1st Pam McCavert 2nd: Mairead Ni Dubhda, Intervals: Joan Moriarty, Eileen Ken -
A solar system for a family of 5 can cost anything from €4,000 to €5,500 supplied and fitted, giving them a yearly saving of approx €350 to €500 and when you take into account the rising cost of energy, a system can pay for itself in 5 to 10 years.
An Séasúr Thart? Níl ná baol air!
Mícheál Ó hUanacháin
Faoin am a mbeidh seo á léamh, beidh Craobhchluiche Chorn an FAI le n-imirt – nó imeartha féin. Idir Dhroichead Átha agus Cathair Dhoire a bheidh an bua, ach seachtain dar gcionn beidh cluiche eile fós le n-imirt ag Drichead Átha, féachaint an iad nó Fánaithe Bhré a bheidh ag imirt sa Phríomh-Shraith an bhliain seo chugainn.
Má chailleann muintir Lú a n-áit sinsearach, fiú agus an Corn buaite acu – má bhuann – glacfaidh siad áir stairiúil sa chluiche. Níl ach dhá fhoireann eile a bhain an Corn, agus a díbríodh go dti an Chéad Sraith sa séasúr céanna roimhe seo, Dún Dealgan, agus Bré!
Ach is suimiúil an líon cluichí atá fós lena n-imirt i ndiaidh phríomh-dhuais na bliana. Cuiresdh an cluiche díbeartha siar de bharr rann-pháirtíocht Dhroichead Átha sa Chorn: murach sin bheidh sé imeartha cheana.
Sa tríú áit atá foireann fear faoi 15 an chumainn, ach arís tá an sraith sin gan críochnú go fóill, agus maidir leis an bhfoireann fear faoi 17 a rinne éacht in aghaidh foirne Chóbh, Loch Garman agus Bhré le Craobh Chorn Mark Farren a shroisint, bhíodar in ainm is leath-Chraobh Phláta na bliana a imirt an deireadh seachtaine seo caite. Ní bhfuaireas aon toradh air sin agus seo á scríobh.
STORAGE UNITS
Bhí foireann fear faoi 20 Thrá Lí le Craobh an Phláta don aoisghrúpa sin a imirt, ach ní féídir liom teacht ar liosta inmhuiníne de na cluichí atá fós lena n-imirt.
Ní beag san mar luach saothair ar obair na bliana.
Tá an chosúlacht ar chúrsaí go n-éiríonn daoine tuirseach nuair a shroiseann na foirne sinsearacha buaicphointe na bliana, agus go bhfágtar riaráistí an tséasúir gan aird gan cúram.
Tå a fhios agam go mbeidh ar a laghad cluiche amháin fós ag na fir faoi 17, mar tá fir Bhré in ainm is taisteal chucu ag deireadh na míosa seo.
Fad atá siadsan fós ag imirt, beidh maithe an chlub ag pleanáil is ag prapáil, gan dabht, cad a déanfar leis an €400 míle (nach mór) atá bronnta orthu le feabhas a chur ar Pháirc Chnoc an Iolair. Molaim iad as a ndúthracht i mbun a n-iarratais; tá an páipéarachas a bhaineann lena leithéid thar cuimse fadálach.

Cath Fionntrá
curtha in eagar ag
Pádraig Ó Siochfhradha
foilsithe ag
Leabhar Breac
‘Ceann de mhórscéalta na Fiannaíochta é Cath Fionntrá. I lámhscríbhinn ón 15ú haois a caomhnaítear an leagan is sine, leagan sa Nua-Ghaeilge Mhoch a bunaíodh ar ábhair níos sine fós. In 1911, a foilsíodh an teagrán seo don chéad uair, ‘aith-innsint ar an seinsgéal as Gaedhilg na haimsire seo’, a bhí sa chur síos air sa chéad eagrán. An Seabhac nó Pádraig Ó Siochfhradha an t-údar, duine de na daoine ab ildánaí i stair na hAthbheochana.
Is é an Dr Breandán Ó Cróinín a chur an t-eagrán nua seo in oiriúint do léitheoirí ár linne, agus a scríobh an réamhrá cuimsitheach a dhéanann cur síos ar an mbunscéal agus ar eagrán an tSeabhaic.’
