Dingle Film Club

Open to Everyone. Tuesday Nights 8.45pm The next screening at the Dingle Film Club will take place on Tuesday 5th March when the feature will be the biographical drama Colette.

After marrying a successful Parisian writer known commonly as "Willy" (Dominic West), SidonieGabrielle Colette (Keira Knightley) is transplanted from her childhood home in rural France to the intellectual and artistic splendor of Paris. Soon after, Willy convinces Colette to ghostwrite for him. She pens a semi-autobiographical novel about a witty and brazen country girl named Claudine, sparking a bestseller and a cultural sensation. After its success, Colette and Willy become the talk of Paris and their adventures inspire additional Claudine novels. Colette's fight over creative ownership and gender roles drives her to overcome societal constraints, revolutionizing literature, fashion and sexual expression. The following week on Tuesday 12th March the feature will be the Japanese drama Shoplifters. The film follows a couple who are stuck with part-time jobs and so avail themselves of the fruits of shoplifting to make ends meet. They are not alone in this behaviour. The younger and the older of the household are in on the act. The unusual routine is about to change from care-free and matter-of-fact to something more dramatic, however, as the couple open their doors to a beleaguered young girl. The reasons for the family's habit and their motivations come under the microscope. 4 West Kerry Live

Farming News BASIC PAYMENT SCHEME FOR 2019 OPEN For the second year in a row, the Basic Payment Scheme (BPS) has opened early. Under the EU regulations, all applications must be submitted online. Last year saw all Irish farmers apply online and this is reflective of the range of benefits that online application brings for farmers. Minister Creed confirmed that the closing date for BPS applications in 2019 is Wednesday 15th May and urged all farmers and advisors to avail of the early opening of the application process now rather than waiting until nearer the closing date. For local information, that is the day after Confirmation Ceremonies in Dingle, Lispole and Ventry. Officials from DAFM will also be providing a range of supports to farmers over the coming weeks and months, including a series of BPS clinics in locations throughout the country. Further supports, such as telephone helplines, will also be in place. These supports will ensure that all farmers are able to access these important payments. If you avail of these, please make sure that you get the name of the person who assists you, as in many cases last yesr, people availed of this assistance, didn’t know the name of the person responsible, and when things went wrong, they had no-one to go to. (There’s nothing worse than trying to clean up someone elses mess). Among the benefits available to online applicants is the availability of preliminary checks for online applications. These preliminary checks allow online applicants to be advised of certain errors at an early stage and to correct any such issues without penalty. Preliminary checks have proved very successful in previous years, and they represent one of the many advantages for farmers that the BPS applications online system offers. All elements of the Direct Payments Schemes (BPS, Greening, Young Farmers Scheme, National Reserve, transferring of entitlements, and the Areas of Natural Constraint Scheme) are now online. This helps to ensure that the Department can process all applications under these schemes as efficiently as possible. All farmers are urged to avail of the opportunity to apply for the BPS at this early stage via the online system. EU regulations set out that from 2018 onwards BPS applications must be made online. In 2018, 100% of applications were made online. All the elements of the Direct Payments Schemes (BPS, Greening, Young Farmers Scheme, National Reserve, and transferring of entitlements, and the Areas of Natural Constraint Scheme) are now online. This helps to ensure that the Department can process all applications under these schemes as efficiently as possible. Other area based schemes for which application is made via the BPS application will now also effectively be online – for example, the Areas of Natural Constraints Scheme. One of the main benefits for online applicants has been the introduction in recent years of preliminary checks for all online applicants. Preliminary checks will identify any overclaims, overlaps or dual claims in respect of online BPS applications. Where a preliminary check identifies such an issue applicants are given the opportunity to amend their claim within a specified timeframe without penalty. Applicants may wish to retain their original claim, or to amend their claim in light of the preliminary check. Over 10,000 farmers benefitted from Preliminary checks in 2018, thereby reducing their risk of penalties. Farmers are now receiving their BPS packs in the post. This will include the usual information to assist farmers in making their applications – Terms and conditions, maps and land details. However, given that applications must now be online there is no paper application form included in the pack. GORSE FIRES From Friday 1st March, it will be illegal to burn gorse on hills, etc. any siting or reports of same to DAFM are likely to result in an investigation, so farmers are advised to refrain from burning any scrub or furze until 1st September 2019. We have had suitable dry conditions since September last, and many land-owners took advantage of these suitable conditions to clear large area of invasive species from their hill farms. They should be commended for the responsible way this was carried out. Technology is so good now that the “eye in the sky” will spot newly burned commonage/hill vegetation, and the camera doesn’t lie. So, be warned. Should you need to burn, it must be all done by 28th February. Violation of this ruling can result in very severe penalties and fines, up to and including the loss of all payments for all schemes for that particular year. According to Dept of Agriculture and Fire Service officials, to much money and too many resourses have been wasted putting out fires, that were illegally started.

10 West Kerry Live

Remember, If you are going to do a Legal Controlled Burn, you must do it right. Have a safety man with you at all times, monitoring the fire, and knowing when to get out of the area if it becomes dangerous. Have sufficient other personnel to look after and control the fire. Have essential equipment, such as fire beaters, and phones – you’ve been at this long enough, you know what to bring. Notify the relevant emergency service, The Fire Service, in advance. Only set a fire, if the conditions are perfect. Sometimes too-dry is not perfect. And never leave a fire if it goes out of control, contact the fire services, and get help. Nitrates Derogation Applications 2019 With Spring apparently here, it is time to focus on what needs to be done. Administratively, this is the most important requirement for some farmers, as failure to follow procedures can be very costly. Farmers are advised to contact their agricultural advisor to determine if they should avail of this facility. The Nitrates Derogation provides farmers an opportunity to farm at higher stocking rates, subject to certain conditions designed to protect the environment and meet the requirements of the Nitrates Directive. The derogation is an important facility for more intensive farmers. Almost 7,000 intensively stocked farmers availed of the derogation in 2018. The online system is aimed at simplifying the application process and assisting farmers to avoid penalties. Farmers can also remain compliant with the Regulations by managing their livestock numbers, exporting enough slurry/farmyard manure or renting additional land. The closing date for applications is 31st March 2019 and End of year Nitrogen and Phosphorus statements (N&P statements) for 2016 are available on the Department’s online system www.agfood.ie. Farmers who exceeded the limits in 2016 based on their cattle numbers will be advised in writing of this shortly but these figures will not have taken into consideration any documentation submitted to the Department by 31st December 2018. Text messages issued to those farmers who were approaching the limits in 2018 and receipt of such a text should act as a reminder to those farmers to consider applying for a Nitrates Derogation this year. The Nitrates Derogation allows farmers to exceed the limit of 170 kg of livestock manure nitrogen per hectare set down in the Nitrates Regulations, up to a maximum of 250 kg per hectare, subject to adherence to stricter rules. For a Nitrates Derogation application to be valid, all terms and conditions of the Derogation must be adhered to, including the following: • An annual application must be made online to the Department. No postal applications will be accepted. • Farming a holding that is at least 80% grass. Have grazing livestock – derogation is only available in respect of grazing livestock. • Have a Fertilisation Plan in place on the holding by 1st March. This plan should be submitted to the Department along with the application form unless the farmer has submitted a fertiliser plan to the Department in 2017, 2017 or 2018. • Fertiliser plans must be based on soil analysis results dated after 15th September 2015. • Applicants who have never previously applied for a derogation, or last applied in 2014 or earlier, and do not have soil analysis results must assume Index 3 for 2017 but soil sample analysis, in respect of crop year 2018, must be available and the fertiliser plan amended accordingly and submitted online to the Department before 31st March 2018. • Fertiliser accounts must be submitted to the Department no later than 31st March of the following year. •

Farmers in derogation cannot import livestock manure

A GOOD DOSING CAN BOOST SURVIVAL RATES AND LAMB VIGOUR Now that we are only five weeks away from lambing, the focus is on the end game. Now all the twin ewes are on .5kg of meal per day and those carrying triplets receive .75kg. We are feeding those with triplets twice a day. When the quantity of meal goes over .5kg we split into two feeds per day. It is more work but we get to see that they are all eating and healthy. Any slow or shy feeders can be picked off and put together in the one pen. We are feeding a loose mixed ration made up of 50pc whole oats, 20pc rolled

barley, 15pc pulp nuts, 13pc soya bean meal and a bag of minerals. This gives us a ration with 15pc crude protein. We will push this up to 19pc for the last three weeks before lambing by increasing the amount of soya bean meal. We will start to feed the singles after another week. All ewes are getting very good silage. I have noticed that when the bale is well chopped they eat more. Any bales that show any signs of mould are fed to the cows. Our next job is to vaccinate all ewes with Covexin 10. This will be done next week. Regular vaccination of your flock throughout the year is a very important part of management. It is even more vital in the period prior to lambing. It is crucial for ewes producing colostrum to pass on immunity to newborn lambs. Vaccinating the ewe four to six weeks before lambing not only boosts her own immunity, it also increases the concentration of protective antibodies in the ewe's colostrum and these pass to the lambs when it sucks. Climate Change Demo Inspired by Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg, whose protest against the Swedish government on climate change has led to protests by over 70,000 young people worldwide, Finn Slattery Dunk (12) is inviting young people in Corca Dhuibhne to join him in a demonstration at midday on Friday March 15th. Finn’s message is to invite all young people to stand together against climate change. ‘We only have twelve years to sort this out’ said Finn, ‘we need to act now’. While some have argued that young people are better staying at school for the day and training to be scientists, others argue that the twelve year timeframe to contain global warming at 1.5C (starkly outlined by leading climate scientists in the 2018 report of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) makes a strong case for action now by the age group who will be most affected. Friday March 15th marks a global young people’s climate strike, following February’s high profile demonstrations in the UK, Australia, Belgium, Germany, the US and Japan. Finn invites the young people of Corca Dhuibhne to join this strike, schools and parents to support them and politicians to act now. ‘I want to help get our voices heard. Help stand up against climate change.’ Meeting point: Dingle Town Park at 12pm on Friday March 15th. Bring banners and placards. 12 West Kerry Live

Good news recently! Údarás na Gaeltachta as lead applicant, and Mol Teic, as one of the project partners, have been successfully approved, under the Rural Regeneration Development Fund (RRDF), for funding to develop a Master Plan for the former Dingle Workhouse. The RRDF funding will be used to build on the Feasibility Study that Mol Teic commissioned (with support from Udaras na Gaeltachta and Kerry County Council) as part of a consultation in 2018. The Master Plan will build upon the design concepts, as already approved, to produce a detailed proposal for the re-development of the protected and socially important structures that comprise the former Dingle Workhouse and surrounding grounds.

The first day of the program scheduled for March 5th from 10-4.30pm will explore who each creative person is, what their craft is and obstacles and opportunities they face in generating an income from their individual craft. Participants will also share experience and ideas on how to bring their talent to a relevant market. Workshops will have a flexible model which allows for the work to be highly respectful of each creative person and also recognise the stage everyone is at currently. Day one will also include a case study from a successful creative business person who will share their story. Behind Every Great Woman is a Great Plate of Food! Irene Ní Fhlannúra International Women’s Day is just around the corner, on the 8th March and what better way to honour all our women than to sneak a peek inside the kitchen door. Food preparation has traditionally been let to the women in most cultures and although times are a-changing, the foods which are most beneficial to women remain constant. So, whether you are a woman, a man or gender neutral, here are eight of the best foods to feed your feminine side! First up are Lentils: These tiny little pulses are a powerhouse of nutrition. They come in many shapes, sizes and colour with dark green and black lentils topping the nutrition charts for women. They are a super source of fibre and protein, two very important components of a healthy, balanced diet for all of us. Women reap added benefits from the iron and B12 content. Active women, pregnant women and girls in their teens are more susceptible to become anaemic (low iron levels) than any other gender group. Even if you do not fall in these categories, being a woman is a risk factor for low levels, especially as we age. Both iron and B12 are involved in many functions in the body but in particular in the making and distribution of red blood cells, energy, nerve and mental health. Lentils can also help stabilize blood sugars, decrease bad cholesterol and alleviate symptoms of PMS and the menopause. Broccoli is up next – this green giant of the cruciferous vegetables has been long associated with protective powers against oestrogen-led cancers in both men and women. Indole-3-carbinol is a substance in cruciferous vegetables that helps the liver to detoxify oestrogens, both those we make ourselves but also the oestrogens we are exposed to in our environment through toxic plastics, household products, hormone-disruptors in food and water supplies and in our cosmetics and bodycare products. The fibre found in broccoli is a favourite with our gut bacteria, helping to maintain a healthy colony of the good bugs inside of us.

Tomatoes also are rich in lycopene, most famed for its anti-aging power and UV protection. Tossed together with a little olive oil, lemon juice and black pepper is enough to make any woman happy, inside and out! While it is tempting to serve a glass of red wine with this meal, which has some health benefits a more apt beverage for the woman is a nice tall glass of cranberry juice! But “the lady doth protest, methinks”! A woman’s biology (and plumbing) makes her more prone urinary tract infections (UTIs) and more than half of all women will experience a UTI in their lifetime. Proanthocyanin in cranberries can prevent bacteria adhering to the linings of the urinary tract and bladder and reduce the risk of a bacterial infection. Opt for pure, unsweetened cranberry juice, not from concentrate and without added sugar. It is quite tart so best diluted with water and served with a smile! For dessert organic Greek yogurt, fresh blueberries and a little local raw honey will keep the female feast on trend, with plenty of girl-power served with a little sweetness. Greek yogurt is a good source of protein, calcium, vitamin B12 and live bacteria, all of which are needed for a strong, resilient body yet often lacking in the modern diet. Time and quality of ingredients are key factors for mineral content and probiotics so get the best quality you can afford always. Blueberries, are anti-oxidant rich powerhouses protecting the body from the negative effects of stress, pollution and aging which affect us all, no matter what gender – so grab a spoon and share! By the way, International Men’s Day is only 266 days away! Irene Ní Fhlannúra, Nutritional Therapist at Ré Nua Natural Health, Goat St., Dingle 066 9151360. Website: www.renuanaturalhealth.com •

Wild salmon may be as scarce as hen’s teeth these days but is worth the effort and cost for its omega-3 content. This good fat is also found in other oily fish, mackerel, sardines, anchovies and in nuts and seeds. This is the kind of fat that keeps our blood vessels supple and helps reduce risk of cardiovascular disease, which increases after menopause. It also improves cognitive health, protects vision and promotes glowing skin which are desirable features of a healthy woman at any stage of her life. Now it’s time to add a bit of fresh, vibrant ingredients to our plate with tomatoes and spinach. These two work great together, with one ingredient complementing the other in flavour and in the synergy of their combined nutrients. Spinach, once the go-to food of Popeye, is associated with increased strength and energy from its iron, B vitamins and folic acid content. Also rich in lutein, vitamins A and C it provides anti-oxidants and protective nutrients for our eyes, lungs and immune system. Similarly, tomatoes have these anti-oxidants too and together, are a potent duo.

Blueberry Buttermilk Pancakes Mark Murphy - Dingle Cookery School Who doesn’t love pancake Tuesday? A time when we get to eat thin pancakes drizzled with a little lemon and sprinkled with sugar. There are so many different choices when it comes to pancakes; thin, thick, fluffy, sweet, savory, filled and so on. For pancake Tuesday there should be no messing around, a simple batter spread thin on the pan and usually served with a little lemon and sugar (If you don’t have a recipe here is one: 100g plain flour, 2 large eggs ,300ml milk and a pinch of salt: mix this together in a jug, leave it aside for 30 minutes. Heat a non-stick pan add a little butter and then add enough batter to cover the surface of the pan, cook for two minutes or so, flip and cook again for another minute or so, serve with lemon and sugar).

2 large eggs grated zest of 1 lemon vegetable oil, for cooking Method Whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and sugar in a large bowl until thoroughly combined. Toss blueberries with 2 tablespoons flour mixture in a medium bowl and set aside. Make a well in the center of the remaining flour mixture and add the buttermilk, eggs, and lemon zest. Whisk together, gradually incorporating the flour mixture, mixing just until combined; some small lumps should remain in the batter. Fold in the blueberries. Let the batter stand for at least 30 minutes. Preheat a pan over medium-high heat. Brush with oil and ladle some of the batter on to the pan. When small bubbles appear across the surface of the pancakes and the edges lift from the pan, flip and continue cooking until the pancakes are golden brown on the second side and are springy to the touch, about 3 minutes total.

However, if you are looking something to liven up any weekend breakfast/ brunch it is worth trying these blueberry buttermilk pancakes. These are so easy to make and will become a staple at the weekend table.

Continue with the rest of the batter

From The Archives Edited By Ted Creedon A ROYAL AWARD - From - The Scotsman, 30 May, 1918. The Board of Trade have received, through the Norwegian Consul-General, a piece of plate [gold or silver] which has been awarded by the King of Norway [Haakon V11] to the Rev. Thomas Jones, C.C., of Ballyferriter, Co. Kerry. The award is in recognition of his services in assisting to rescue eight members of the crew of the Norwegian barque Carmanian at Ballinabuck in April, 1916. The King has also awarded the sum of £3 each to Patrick Lynch, Patrick Connor and Patrick James Connor, for their services on the occasion. BOATLOADS OF POTATOES - From - The Pilot, 22 July, 1829. The supply of potatoes in our market on Saturday was more abundant than usual. Fifteen boats laden with potatoes, have arrived in the canal, from Castlegregory, and a large sloop arrived on Friday at Blennerville, from Smerwick harbour, with a large cargo of potatoes of the best description.

swept into the sea; and the result was that out of the six four of them were drowned. Another boat was in the vicinity of the disaster, but could render no assistance owing to the heavy swell on the strand. The names of the lost men were Michael, Thomas and James Connor and John Kennedy. Two of the Connors were married men. Michael Connor was an only son as also was Kennedy who leaves a father and mother and seven sisters to mourn his untimely end. CROMANE POINT COAST GUARD STATION - From -Tipperary Vindicator, 15 August, 1865. Sealed tenders, addressed to the undersigned, will be received up to the hour of 12 o’clock, noon, on the 11th September next, for erecting and completing a Coast Guard Station at Cromane Point, in Castlemaine Harbour near Milltown, County Kerry. The station will consist of a house for a Chief Boatman, cottages for five men, a boat house, watch room; and store according to plans and specifications to be seen at this office and also the Customs House, Tralee. (signed) Edward Hornsby, Secretary, Office of Public Works. (The former Cromane Point coastguard station is now a well known restaurant)

These potatoes are selling at one shilling the peck less than the price in the market. The opening price in the market was 14 shillings the peck, which is excessively high, when we consider the large supplies sent in every day from Castlegregory. FAMINE RELIEF - From - Roscomon & Leitrim Gazette, 05 December, 1846. The frigate Andromache, fitted as a meal depot for Galway, proceeded to sea on Wednesday, in company with her Majesty’s steam vessel Blazer, having on board 160 tons of Indian meal for the relief committee of Bantry, Dingle, Milltown and Killarney. The Admiral has ordered the Andromache to be cleared at Ventry by the Blazer and Alban, for conveyance to Castlemaine harbour.

SEVERE STORM AND HIGH TIDES - From - Kerry Evening Post, 16 February, 1850. During the late terrific storm which prevailed, every canoe in the neighbourhood of Coushavodig, near Smerwick harbour, was blown up on the high lands and stove to pieces; the tide flowed unusually high, and inundated parts that it was never known to reach before. A species of fish called sand eels, were picked up in numbers on the green cliffs. DINGLE EMIGRATION - From - Tralee Chronicle, 17 July, 1866. The tide of emigration has commenced with fresh vigour in our too thinly populated district. Cartload after cartload of men, women and children have been passing through the town for the last 48 hours en route to Cork, and to catch the Limerick steamer at Tralee. Large crowds of the sorrowing friends accompany them in their onward course.

GLAN Dingle Peninsula Update Green Shoots in Castlegregory & Maharees! GLAN Dingle Peninsula is a volunteer-led pilot Clean Coasts initiative being implemented in Castlegregory and Maharees by the Maharees Conservation Association team to develop the area as a clean, green and environmentally sustainable destination. The GLAN programme aims to help businesses and organisations to transition towards sustainable practices. Organisations in Maharees and Castlegregory including businesses, clubs, schools are asked by GLAN Dingle Peninsula volunteers to make ‘green and clean’ pledges/ commitments. These include: participating in 2 minute street cleans, moving away from single use plastic and implementing waste reduction practices. Each organisation receives a GLAN Dingle Peninsula sticker for the store/office front and if required, additional information, e.g. a recycling workshop, can be organised. The response from businesses has been tremendous so far, with all businesses contacted taking up pledges and making changes in how they operate. Local bars such as Maurice Fitzgerald’s, Boland’s, Ned Natterjack’s and Spillane’s have reduced the volume of plastic straws used by removing them from counter tops. There has also been significant support for the Think Before you Flush campaign – with businesses displaying the campaign posters in bathrooms, reminding patrons not to flush damaging items like wipes, cotton buds or plasters etc. because of the damage they do to the marine environment. Rose Spillane of Spillane’s Bar and Restaurant, Maharees said her team has been focusing on removing unnecessary plastic from the restaurant. “We think the GLAN initiative is a fantastic idea, especially in areas as beautiful as the Maharees. As a business in a tourist location, it’s up to us to provide our customer with options and opportunities to keep our surroundings beautiful. We started using compostable packaging for all our takeaways last year. This proved very popular with customers. We use compostable straws and only give them out when requested. This summer, we intend to switch from sachets to refillable bottles for condiments. We also intend to eliminate all single-use plastic drinks bottles from our shelves. We also have a big project taking place this year as ambassadors with ESB networks, which will see us incorporating renewable technologies into our business, we’re very excited about that!” The team at the local supermarket, SPAR, Castlegregory has also been working hard at introducing sustainable practices. Owner, Michaeal Lynch said: “We have been segregating food waste for a while - this ends up as a digestate to produce compost and bio methane gas which is used to produce electricity. We would also segregate plastics and cardboard for recycling. Since we signed up to GLAN last summer, we have introduced compostable cups and lids for our take away coffee and teas. We no longer sell drinking straws. Another development has been the introduction of the Ballymac milk which is sold in reusable glass bottles.” Future sustainability plans for SPAR, Castlegregory include switching 24 West Kerry Live

away from single-use carrier bags and cutlery.

The 2 Minute Street Clean The 2 Minute Street is a Clean Coasts initiative which aims to inspire local businesses and residents to undertake regular short clean ups to remove litter and plastic from our environment. This GLAN pledge was particularly popular with Castlegregory GLAN signees such as Catriona’s Hair Salon, The Beach Box, the Post Office, OPTP and Castlegregory Community Council. The Community Council has just set up an enthusiastic Tidy Towns group with fantastic plans for 2019. Fionnuala Fitzgerald, Chairperson of Castlegregory Community Council said: “The Tidy Towns group is excited to get started on our active campaign to begin the physical transformation of the village. We are looking forward to working with other groups such as Maharees Conservation Association and we hope to be active participants in the GLAN Dingle Peninsula programme. We are very conscious of biodiversity and sustainability and we will work with nature, with its conservation in mind. We will avoid using sprays, weed

killers and other damaging substances to the environment. We plan to grow flowers and plants that are bee and butterfly-friendly and we plan to introduce nature-friendly items such as insect hotels and bird houses around the village. Our next Tidy Towns meeting will take place on 6th March at the Club Rooms at 8pm, you can add your name to the list of litter pickers at the Information Centre and anyone who would like to join us will be welcomed with open arms.” If any business is interested in joining the GLAN Dingle Peninsula network, just contact us on mahareesconservation@gmail.com or message us on our Facebook page: Maharees Heritage and Conservation

To Pension or Not To Pension, THAT is The Question So, my opening line might sound funny in MY head but not in yours, but the underlying question is, should I or should I not contribute to a pension. The quick answer is YES you should and the earlier you start your pension, the better it will provide for you when you retire. The good news is that most of us are now living longer, the bad news is that means that we need to provide ourselves with an income for longer when we retire. Ah sure I’ll have the state pension, that’ll look after me when I retire! Not necessarily. The state has now increased the age that we can receive the state pension to 68 if you are born after 1961. That’s an extra 3 years on what was age 65. As I’ve already said, we are living longer and in Ireland there will eventually be more people in an older aging workforce than young people to support us in our retirement via the state pension. Question: What can you do? Answer: Start your pension. The answer really is that simple. So, what are the benefits to you? 1. Income when you retire – so you can take that holiday of a lifetime or enjoy financial

free worry when you retire. 2. Income Tax Relief now – when you pay into a pension whether you are a PAYE worker or Self Employed you will receive tax relief of 20% or 40% depending on the rate at which you pay income tax. This means that if you pay €100 per month into your pension the amount that you actually pay is €80 at the 20% income tax rate. Likewise, if you pay income tax at 40% what you actually pay is €60 as you will earn tax relief of €40.

So, the moral of this story…start your pension, it’s only good for you! Sylvia Casey QFA is a Financial Advisor with Seán O’Sullivan & Co. What’s not to like? Pensions are confusing which is the reason why I think many of us put off paying into our pension because we don’t really understand how they work, I also think that when we are young we think we will never retire I know that I did, but at 40 years of age (eek) those years are creeping in and before I know it I’ll be looking down the barrel of my Golden Years which at age 18, 28, 38 I thought would never happen!

Plenty Of Cause For Optimism As Kerry Build Towards Bigger Things. The Fourth Official Top of Division One of the Allianz Football League at the beginning of March, four wins from four games with wins over Tyrone, Cavan, Galway and of course arch-rivals Dublin in as brilliant & bruising a league game as there’s been for many years. The win over the Dubs felt like a championship game in everything but name, played under the lights in Tralee in front of a sell-out crowd of 12,000 who certainly got their money’s worth as the home side prevailed on a score line of 1-18 to 2-14. Not so much the win but more so the manner in which it was achieved would give you reason to be very hopeful going forward, as the inevitability of having to beat the Dubs again to win an All-Ireland lies ahead. This Kerry team seem to have a grit and ferociousness to them that to my mind was possibly lacking in the last four years since the All-Ireland win in 2014. Possibly the reason being that a new manager in Peter Keane and the blooding of a large core group of players he managed as minor boss has breathed new life into a panel that was in need of a change of scenery. The step up from minor and even under 20 level can be both daunting and difficult from a physical stand point but also the mental pressure that goes with pulling on a Kerry senior jersey for the first time. But it is one that to their absolute credit young players like Sean O’Shea, Dara Moynihan, Gavin O’Brien and more recently Tomas O’Sé have taken in their stride, albeit O’Shea did have the benefit of playing championship games for Kerry last season he seems a more mature and improved player a year on. The introduction of youth and pace, combined with the experience and known ability of 2014 All-Ireland winners Paul Geaney, Paul Murphy, David Moran, Mikey Geaney and Stephen O’Brien to name a few, bodes well as a potent combination as we inch closer towards championship 2019 and our opening game on the 1st of June. So, what of Keane’s management and his style of play? At the beginning of his tenure as boss he stressed patience and when asked about how seriously the League would be taken he said “Is the League of utmost importance to us? No, it’s not.” Stating that there was a grander plan in play which you’d think was winning a first All-Ireland for five years although he didn’t state that directly, “Ultimately, there is a bigger picture. I have a great squad to work with and it’s a challenge we are all embracing.” While patience should be heeded slightly and keeping in mind the old adage that it’s ‘only the League’, that result in Austin Stack’s Park against Dublin and the gritty, determined way in which it was manufactured will have given Jim Gavin plenty to think about come the championship. There’s further reason to be optimistic and confident going forward. Kerry have a very economical style of playing under Keane where his team defend as a cohesive unit without the ball, not in the sense of everyone dropping back but channels and lines are blocked up by bodies with aggressive tackling and pressure, and they tend to go man on man as a back six unit with the midfield and half-backs dropping a bit deeper when they’re not in possession in an attempt to force the opposition into a stray kick pass or a handling error. It was a tactic that seemed to work well against Dublin as both of their goals came completely against the run of play. Contrastingly when in possession Kerry seem to be well able to mix it up, there is a presence physically, particularly around the middle of the field, and a tempo to their play whether running the ball through the lines or using thirty metre plus kick passes into the full-forward line, a tactic that will surely reap dividends when they face the likes of Dublin and Mayo where converting any goal opportunities will be paramount. Defensively through their first four league games they’ve conceded an average of 13 points, an impressive effort when you consider through four league games last year they had conceded an average of 18 points. The defensive unit looks to be in good order and is the starting point with every All-Ireland contender, Kerry’s in my opinion at the moment is the best in the country, whether it can withstand the acid test of Dublin 28 West Kerry Live

or Mayo in Croke Park come August we’ll know in time. The final aspect that I wanted to touch on is the imperative importance of a dead-ball specialist in your team if you have All-Ireland aspirations. Dublin have a proven performer in Dean Rock whereby if you concede a free inside the 45 it tends to equate into conceding a point ninety percent of the time, they also have Cluxton for any free favouring his left leg. It is something that some counties contending for the All-Ireland simply do not have, particularly Mayo and Tyrone, who seem to share the duty which was notable in last years All-Ireland final with Peter Harte, Conor McAliskey and Lee Brennan all taking frees at different stages of the game. Kerry to their benefit seem to have unearthed a gem of a free-taker in Kenmare man Sean O’Shea, that side-line he nailed with the outside of his boot against Tyrone comes to mind. He seems equally competent from both the hands and off the ground which is a bonus. There is simply much more to him than his free-taking though. A technically gifted player he seems astute and comfortable in possession and plays the half-forward play making role well while also having the pace to make powerful runs beyond the forty, in doing so offering another goal threat within the team, something you can never have enough of. While they are league games and must be taken as such, I would be confident of a bold showing from this vibrant energetic Kerry team come the championship. Provided the defence holds its current form and with the return of a few key Dr. Crokes players as well as the imminent return of David Clifford providing an extra injection of competitiveness and drive by the time they play the winners of Waterford vs Clare on June 1st, they will go deep into the championship. I would be cautiously confident of an All-Ireland final date with Dublin on Sunday September 1st and a chance to stop the five in-a-row dead in its tracks.

Breandán Mac Gearailt Scoil Cheoil an Earraig. Bíonn Fáilte mhór roimh an scoil seo gach bliain atá ag dul ó neart go neart bliain i ndiaidh bliana. Is searbh an duine ná hardóch an scoil seo a chroí. Bhí An Buailtín plódaithe le amhránaithe, ceóltóirí,rinceóirí ar an sean nós. Bhíodar ann go slachtmhar. ‘Sé Boscó Ó Conchúir a sheol An Féasta Oíche Dé Céadaoin. Níor chás dó mar ‘sé go raibh a dhíntiúrí aige go beacht. Stem Cell Treatment For Arthritis - Buyer Beware Eddie O'Grady Recently in Ireland, people are paying thousands for procedures advertised as ''stem cell treatment'', for conditions such as osteoarthritis. These treatments are not covered by health insurance companies etc. They often use the term ''stem cell treatment'', for a process that bears little if any resemblance to what stem cell therapy actually is. Below is a summary of an article written by an orthopedic surgeon outlining the limitations of stem cell therapy as it presently stands. Before you part with your money for one of these treatments, have a read of it, discuss it with your doctor and do your research. Summary of article written by Mark Miller, Professor of Orthopedic Surgery, University of Virginia, ''Stem cell treatments for arthritic knees are unproven, expensive and potentially dangerous'' (February 5, 2019 11.40am , http://www.theconversation.com) Stem cells are “uncommitted” cells that are, at least theoretically, capable of becoming any type of cell – skin, heart, kidney or even knee cartilage cells. Stem cells can come from fetal tissue, including products of in-vitro fertilization as well as placenta and umbilical cord tissue. They can also come from a patient’s own “hidden” adult stem cells, which are most often harvested from bone marrow and fat. The potential for using these cells in medicine is tremendous. The truth about stem cells Unfortunately, the excitement about stem cells has outpaced the science. In addition, due to the ethical issues associated with the use of fetal tissue, the U.S. Food 38 West Kerry Live

and Drug Administration has severely restricted its use and obtaining an abundant source of concentrated stem cells can be difficult. In orthopedics, researchers have proposed using stem cells for the treatment of joint/cartilage damage. This includes osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis often results in the need for joint replacement surgery. Stem cell injections are now being promoted as a potential way of avoiding the need joint replacement, by ''regenerating'' the cartilage. Unfortunately, current technology and regulatory issues make obtaining and concentrating true stem cells a challenge, and encouraging them to become and remain cartilage cells and nothing else is even more difficult.

Alternatives to stem cells Depending on the cause and severity of their joint pain, patients have treatment options that range from physical therapy, to injections of various medications, to surgery. All have pros and cons; steroid injections can provide quick but short-lived pain relief, while a knee replacement can provide a permanent solution but also requires months of rehabilitation. Doctors need to help patients make the choice that best fits their particular needs.

Eddie O’Grady

The problem with stem cells is that these cells can continue to evolve; they may not stop development at the cartilage cell phase. They may continue to differentiate into bone cells. This would make the joint even worse because bone creates a rough surface adjacent to the smooth articular cartilage. Bone is actually the end result of arthritis. According to the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, there are no proven medications or therapies that can delay or reverse the progressive joint destruction that occurs with osteoarthritis. Many patients have paid out thousands of dollars for ''so-called stem cell treatment'' only to later discover that they were scammed. Any Covering Dingle (Every Weds) at 3 Goat Street positive effects of current stem cell treatment & Tralee at Oakview (Mon - Sat) are likely not the result of the actual cells themselves but something else.

Dingle Notes Richie Williams BUILDING RENOVATIONS. There appears to be at least 2 major renovation works going on in every street in town at present which when finished will transform and improve the appearance of our town for locals and tourists alike. Lets hope these works will be completed in time before the traffic starts to build up again. PEIL. Good luck to the Pobal Scoil team in the Corn Uí Mhuirí replay on this Saturday in Tralee. Comhgairdeas to the Dingle Senior team on their win in Comórtas Peile Paidi Ó Sé and the 2018 West Kerry League Final played in Castlegregory recently. Also great to see so many West Kerry players featuring prominently in the Kerry seniors recent unbeaten run in the National League. AWARDS. Comhgairdeas to Dingle Distillery on being judged as producing the Best Gin in The World at a recent awards ceremony in London. This outfit employs several local people on a permanent basis at its Milltown premises and has put the name of our town in the positive news headlines as well as on peoples lips over the past few years. I always felt there was something special about the water in the Milltown River!!!. Also congratulations to Benner's Hotel on being judged Best Irish Breakfast in the 3 star hotel category at the Irish Hotels Awards and to Castlewood House who also featured prominently at that ceremony. Our small community here in Dingle certainly must be doing something right to claim such recognition at what is an increasingly competitive touristm market in Ireland today. You may remember me saying in past notes that consistant quality service and high standards certainly bring the rewards to those who try hardest. NATIONWIDE. A recent RTE programme in the Nationwide series featured Kathleen MCauliffes Shop in Green Street and her partner's workshop in Castlegregory. Again great to see such positive publicity and what a great success story Kathleen's small business has blossomed into and an inspiration i am sure for others to replicate with their own ideas. DINGLE'S OLD HOSPITAL. After many years falling further into possible total dereliction it now appears there is some hope of a new life for the Old Hospital building in Ashmount. Grant 40 West Kerry Live

Buying goods online Question I have ordered a few presents online. Can I return them if I change my mind when I get them? Answer If you bought your goods from a business based in the EU, they are covered by the EU Directive on Consumer Rights. Under this Directive, you are entitled to a cooling-off period of 14 days. During the cooling-off period, you can cancel distance contracts such as online purchases without giving a reason and without incurring charges or penalties, other than possible charges for returning the goods. The 14-day cooling-off period begins on the day that you receive the goods. The distance seller must repay you for the goods including delivery costs within 14 days of cancellation,. If you chose a more expensive type of delivery than the seller’s cheapest standard delivery, you are only entitled to be refunded the cost of the cheaper delivery type. The seller can withhold the repayment until the goods are returned or until you supply evidence that you have sent the goods back.

You must send the goods back within 14 days of informing the seller of the cancellation. You may have to pay for the cost of returning them. The seller must have informed you of these costs before you completed the purchase. The seller should also have given you confirmation of the contract, as well as information on aftersales and guarantees, how to cancel the contract and a postal address for complaints. If the seller did not provide you with information on your right to cancel, the cooling-off period can be extended by 12 months. Some purchases are not covered by the cooling-off period. These include customised or perishable goods and bookings for transport or accommodation. If you bought your goods from a business based outside the EU, they are not covered under the EU Directive. For these goods, you should check the terms and conditions on the website of the business you bought them from.

SENIORS: Mid Kerry League (round 4) result: Cromane 2-11, Milltown-Castlemaine 0-11 Cromane seniors pulled off a great win on Sunday morning at home to Milltown-Castlemaine in the Mid Kerry League. They led throughout with an early Darren Houlihan penalty giving them a 1-1 to 0-1 lead after ten minutes. Darren had an excellent game ending the day with 2-7 to his name. Further first-half points from Donnchadh Walsh, Finbar Casey and Mikey Houlihan left Cromane ahead by 1-7 to 0-5 at the break. Milltown-Castlemaine tore into the game at the start of the second half and midway through they had the Cromane lead down to one, 1-9 to 0-11. Cromane to their credit dug deep and further points from Niall Dennehy and the Houlihan brothers had Cromane ahead 1-12 to 0-11 with five minutes left. Some quick thinking by Mikey Houlihan then gave his brother Darren a chance to seal the game and he made no mistake to finish to the net for his second goal.An excellent win for this young Cromane side. Movie Review

Michael Healy-Rae TD Mícheál Ó’hEalaigh-Rae

The Umbrella Academy

Working with David Russell Clinics-3rd Mon of the month.

Pierce Hoare The Umbrella Academy is a 2019 dark comedy/action series on Netflix based off the comic series of the same name. The show stars Ellen Page (Juno, Inception), Tom Hopper (Merlin, Game of Thrones) and Aidan Gallagher (Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn). The show follows a dysfunctional family who, when they were kids, acted as superheroes. Throughout the first season they must deal with the impending end of the world in 8 days while also attempting to tolerate each other. The action in the show is passable but the music during the fights, while not thematically fitting, certainly makes them more enjoyable. The comedy in the series peaked, in my opinion, in the first episode but is still funny throughout the 9 other episodes. The show can also, at times, feel a lot like Netflix’s other show, “The Haunting of Hill House”, but I am willing to give The Umbrella Academy the benefit of the doubt as both are based off of different texts. The special effects in the show are impressive for a television series and the acting, especially with the child actor Aidan Gallagher, is amazing. The show is aimed at teens and above so if you think you’d like a darker version of X-Men with not as many characters, I would recommend this show. Hopefully it will be renewed for a second season and that they will fix they few problems from season one. Pierce Hoare is a student in Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne

Fonn a Níos Fiach le

Pádraig Ua Maoileoin foilsithe ag

Leabhar Breac Seo eagrán nua den seod seo a d’fhoilsigh Pádraig Ua Maoileoin in 1978. ‘Fonn a níos fiach’ a deir an seanfhocal, agus nuair a bhualann an t-ocras Seán Mhicil agus a theaghlach óg caithfidh sé seiftiú dá réir. I bprós glan snoite, insíonn an t-úrscéal gearr seo scéal an fhir atá á thiomáint ag an ocras chun seilg a dhéanamh ar son a theaghlaigh. Ach más é an gorta a chuireann Seán Mhicil amach thar shneachta an tsléibhe i mblianta deiridh an Ghorta Mhóir, de réir mar atá an giorria éalaitheach á leanúint go diongbháilte aige gabhann an tseilg seo chun laochais. Ba í seo an leabhar ab ansa dá chuid leis an údar féin - insint teann íogair a bhfuil fiántas agus boladh an dúchais tríd. Agus, cé go gcuirtear i gcomparáid le clasaic Hemmingway The Old Man and the Sea é, agus le Moby Dick Herman Melville, is sásúla go mór fada mar leabhar é seo.’ - Leabhar Breac An Café Liteartha Bóthar an Dadhgaide, Daingean Uí Chúis Siopa Leabhar an Daingin ó 1979 An Café Liteartha
