K-Fest Calls Visual Artists

impressive K-Fest has seen,” says Neil Browne, K-Fest Artistic Director. “This year, we’re also changing up the Screaming Pope Prize. Rather than selecting an artist and their entire collection as the award recipient, we will be selecting an artist based on the single best piece of work at K-Fest 2017. This truly opens the door to all artists who exhibit at the festival this year.” K-Fest affords new and emerging artists from Ireland and beyond the ability to showcase their work to nearly 10,000 eventgoers each year during the June Bank Holiday Weekend, providing opportunities for patronage, partnerships, and community building with fellow artists and local residents.

Art Submissions Being Accepted for K-Fest 2017 Visual arts submissions are now being accepted for K-Fest Music & The Arts, which takes place in Killorglin on Friday, June 2, through Monday, June 5, 2017. Submissions, including images of artwork, photo of the artist, biography, and artist statement, may be sent via email to Neil Browne, K-Fest Artistic Director, at submissions@kfest.ie. Submissions are due at midnight on March 31. Now in its fifth year, K-Fest Music has grown since it’s inception and now hosts up to 160 visual artists in bespoke pop-up galleries, as well as dozens of musical acts, an array of theatrical performances, spoken word, short films, secret cinema, activities for children, and the unique Screaming Pope Prize. The festival aims to promote culture in all its forms, to nurture the growth of music and the arts, and to foster participation in the arts and artistic thought for all ages. The K-Fest name is associated with cultural innovation, artistic exploration and excellence, and for showcasing fun, eclectic, and thought-provoking events while setting and maintaining high-production standards across all its programmes. “This is the second year that we’re holding open submissions for our visual arts galleries, as last year’s submissions proved to be the most

Dingle Film Club Open to Everyone Tuesday Nights 8.30pm

The feature at the next Dingle Film Club at the Phoenix Cinema on Tuesday 7th February at 8.30pm will be the drama road movie which won the jury prize at last year’s Cannes Film Festival, “American Honey”. In an unconventional take on the coming-of-age drama, the film follows the experiences of Star, an adolescent girl from a troubled home who runs away with a traveling sales crew who drive across the American Midwest selling subscriptions door to door. Finding her feet in this gang of teenagers, she soon gets into the group’s lifestyle of hard-partying nights, lawbending days, and young love. The following week on Tuesday 14th February at 8.30pm the feature will be the Martin Scorsese directed “Silence”. This historical drama, based upon the 1966 novel of the same name by Shūsaku Endō, tells the tale of two Catholic missionaries (Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver) who face the ultimate test of faith when they travel to Japan in search of their missing mentor (Liam Neeson) - at a time when Catholicism was outlawed and their presence forbidden. “Silence” ends Scorsese’s decades-long creative quest with a thoughtful, emotionally resonant look at spirituality and human nature. A beautifully evocative and meditative film. 4 West Kerry Live

Dingle Notes Richard Williams AWARDS-- The local band WALKING ON CARS have certainly hit the music headlines over the past while . They were honoured at the Eurosonic Festival in the Netherlands receiving the EBBA award in recognition of their success in countries other than their own. Then last week they provided the soundtrack to a new Wild Atlantic Way promotion video released by Failte Ireland. The first of many such awards and contracts we hope for such a talented group. RACE NIGHT--- The annual Race Night to raise funds for the New Years Eve Fireworks Display will be held in Paddy Bawns Premises on this Saturday February 4th commencing at 9.00p.m. Entry is free and the Business Chamber would appreciate the support of locals and visitors alike. A few horses on the 10 race card are still looking for owners with good prize money on offer to those visiting the winners enclosure and Sheehys Spar or Paddy Bawns staff will get late comers registered before the off on Saturday. Yes the race night is the place to be this Saturday!!!.

FESTIVALS--- January may have been a relatively quiet month but the season of Festivals and Events will certainly kick off in February with the Dingle Walking Festival, Scoil Ceoil An Earraigh and Feile Peile Paidi O Se to closely follow the Storm Festival which is upon us this weekend. The full programme for the Storm Festival is available elsewhere in this edition with many different events planned right across the Peninsula. I will briefly summarise the events that are scheduled to take place or start in and around Dingle Town only.

FLUSH--- Dingle has been chosen as one of ten locations in Ireland for a pilot project THINK BEFORE YOU FLUSH which will be launched in the Oceanworld during the Storm Festival this weekend. Our proximity to the sea and huge volumes of tourists to this area are the prime reasons for basing such an important pilot scheme in a seaside town. ALL WEATHER PITCH--- There has been an encouraging reaction to the idea of researching the possibility of an All Weather multi purpose Playing Pitch here in Dingle. Department Extends Sheep Census & Sheep Welfare Scheme Deadline. The Department of Agriculture Food and the Marine have confirmed that the deadline for the return of completed Sheep Census 2016 forms has been extended to Friday 3rd of February to coincide with the extension provided to the Sheep Welfare Scheme. 2016 census returns may be returned either by post to Seefin Data Management, PO Box 17, An Post, Cahirdown, Listowel D.S.U, Co Kerry or online via agfood.ie, no later than Friday 3rd February 2017. Farmers not already registered with agfood.ie can do so by logging on to www.agfood.ie and clicking the option to register. It should be noted that the extended closing date of Friday 3rd February also applies to online Census returns so users registering for access to agfood. ie for the first time should allow sufficient time for their log-on details, which will allow access to all relevant online services, to be sent to them by post after they register. These login details will be required to allow online completion of the census. Creed Meets Commissioner Hogan to Review Brexit The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Michael Creed TD, met European Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Phil Hogan, to review a number of issues currently on the EU agenda. Foremost in the discussions was Brexit, but the meeting also touched on a wide range of issues of interest to Ireland. Commenting afterwards, the Minister said: “Today was a welcome opportunity to review the current EU landscape. In addition to a broad discussion on Brexit and its implications for the Irish agri-food sector, I was able to discuss the current situation in a range of policy areas, including the future of CAP post-2020 and the strengthening of farmers’ position in the food supply chain.” The Minister particularly welcomed indications from Commissioner Hogan that Ireland’s recent submission to amend its Rural Development programme will shortly be approved. The Minister said: “The imminent approval of the RDP amendment will allow us to proceed with a number of important elements of the programme, including the proposed hen harrier and freshwater pearl mussel schemes and in the area of animal welfare. I am delighted that the amendment process has come to a conclusion and look forward to these schemes’ implementation in the coming period.” Trade & Market Conditions tops agenda at EU Council of Agriculture. Speaking about the discussions on International Trade and Free Trade Agreements at the recent Council of Ministers meeting in Brussels, Minister Creed said that Ireland supports “trade liberalisation” and recognises the benefits of trade agreements with countries outside the EU. He also believe in taking a balanced approach, so that offensive and defensive interests are both addressed as comprehensively as possible. Ministers also had the opportunity to discuss current market conditions. Minister Creed noted that the range of measures introduced by the Commission last year aimed at reducing the impact of the reduced milk price was very welcome. Other specific reference were made to the difficulties being experienced in the tillage sector where mr Creed asked the Commission to address the significant overpricing of fertiliser in the EU brought about by the imposition of anti-dumping duties on imports. The Minister welcomed the report of the Sheep Meat Forum and paid tribute to the work of its chairman, John Bryan. The Minister called for a discussion at a future Council on implementation of the policy roadmap outlined in the report. Cara Projects – An Explaination Sometimes we all take advantage of a situation, and this is one of mine. As a regular contribution to this column, I never use the first person singular. But on this occasion, I make an exception. At this stage, many of you will have noticed a number of young people actively fundraising for a charity called Cara Projects. This is to enable one of our young people to volunteer in an orphanage in CARA Projects Girl’s Rescue Centre (CGRC), located in Kibiko, Ngong, Nairobi, Kenya. This is not just an ordinary orphanage and rescue centre, as the plight of young girls in equatorial Africa is much tougher than it is here, in Ireland, even in remote parts of Europe. Some girls out there are abandoned, sold, or stolen and placed in the slavery market. The lives of thousands of young girls are ripped apart through illness, poverty, abuse and hardship. It’s not a pleasant world. There is no need to go into too many 10 West Kerry Live

specifics, but you get the picture. CARA Projects have been working out in the region for years and is the brainchild of a man from Newbridge, Co Kildare called Paddy O’Connor. Over the past number of years, Paddy has worked on a number of projects in Kenya, ranging from the building of orphanages and schools to the provision of a mini-bus for a remote orphanage outside Nairobi. It is while helping and assisting that we have seen the clear need for positive change, which we feel can be achieved through altering the circumstances and the situation of both girls and women. Yes we look to assist the most vulnerable and abused, but we also look to create the environment and circumstances where they can positively challenge and break the cycle of abuse and dependency. With this in mind CARA decided to focus our attention on the CARA Girls Rescue Centre (CGRC) and its local community. They looked at what was needed and adopted these values and objectives. It is an Irish Registered Charity (CHY18652) and is totally funded and supported by volunteers. No income is paid to the Irish Board of Management. All board members have travelled and worked on projects in CGRC, as it is a Registered Kenyan NGO. These Projects have no political or religious affiliations. Every year, for the past number of years, a bunch of local teens travelled to this centre, to help out. To get there, they first had to fundraise, to meet their travel costs, and bring some much-needed cash to the centre. This year is no exception, and the sole traveller this time, is my son and namesake, Louis Murchan. It’s hard not to be proud of someone who takes on a task like this, especially when he had to do it on his own, and in a climate where some feel that it’s a waste of time. But he did get lots and lots of help from his friends, and mine, and he got much needed support from, you the public. Education is the most important thing in helping the children of Kenya to get out of the poverty that they live in. It costs just €140 to educate a child in Kenya, for a year, so when someone brings out €2,100 this will guarantee the education of 15 girls, for that year. They also have to be fed, clothed, housed and protected. In total, this costs €45,000. Not a lot, in terms of the average income, in Dingle. To do this, The centre get 30 volunteers to fundraise, and look for a minimum of €1,000 each. Any extra cash raised is a bonus. This leave the centre €15,000 short financially, and this money is raised through commercial agriculture, crafts, and fish farming. They have pigs, grow wheat and other cereals more common to the Rift Valley, than to West Kerry. There are 28 fish ponds, producing fish to supply the local markets. All this goes towards making that extra money for the upkeep of the centre. This is going to be a life changing experience for young Louis, but it’s not about him, and he knows that. And it’s not going to be near as significant as it will be for those who benefit from your generous contributions. I wish I could go, (there’s that “I” again) and I know that I could do some good, but I just can’t. But someone is going. So if you see anyone collecting over the weekend, for a charity with a strange name, for a centre in a far-off place, don’t say, “but, didn’t I give you a few pence last week” Just say hello, and put your hand in your pocket. It’s not for him, it’s not for me, it’s not for you. It’s for those poor young girls. And, don’t be surprised if you’re asked to contribute again next year, because that’s the type of young people we have down here. So, in the words of my cousin, Diarmuid, there are “Good People”. He would like to thank all who made this all possible, so far, and will give a full account of himself, and thank all who helped and allowed this all run smoothly, so far. And there are many to thank. But there are also some, who feel that we do enough, and that’s what makes this achievement all the greater. Let me just remind you, we don’t do enough. During our darkest days of our worst recession, it was still safe to let our children walk home from school. Louis travels on Thursday 9th February flying to Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, then on to Niarobai Kenya, and by car/coach what ever wo his final destination. Spring Cleaning for your Body Irene Ní Fhlannúra Although, many will argue that true Spring does not start until March, it is deeply entrenched in our pre-Christian roots that Spring begins around the 1st of February. Historically we marked its onset with the celebration of Imbolg, the feast day of the Irish Goddess Bríd, who later was “Christianized” and became St. Bridget. Astronomers and meteorologists have long debated when Spring truly starts, but it really is a no-brainer when you consider that mid-Summer, for us Celts, is roughly around June 21st and we know that each season lasts three months – dá bhrí sin… Spring starts at the beginning of February! With that out of the way, let’s get back to our roots and welcome Spring into our bodies by shedding the Winter layers and embrace the light, bright days that lie ahead. Whereas winter was a time to conserve energy and reduce activity, Spring is a time of regeneration, new beginnings, new growth and a renewal of spirit. According to the philosophy of Chinese medicine, Spring is represented by the wood element and includes the liver and its complementary organ, the gallbladder, these two organs are usually the primary targets for Springtime cleansing and health regimens. A Spring diet supports the liver which is the major detoxification organ in the body. The liver is responsible for the smooth flowing of Qi (energy) throughout the body. When the liver functions smoothly - physical and emotional activity throughout the body also runs smoothly. So, for optimum health this Spring, move your Qi! Many of the illnesses that are typical of the change between Winter and Spring such as respiratory problems, chest infections, coughs, colds and constipation are symptomatic of stagnated and congested Qi in the body. Your body’s natural instinct is to rid itself of toxins by cleaning out the heavy, dampening foods of Winter fare and embrace all that is young, fresh and green! A Spring detox can be a gentle and effective way to tune in with your body’s efforts paving the way for energy to move freely throughout the body. While there are plenty of “detox” diets out there, it is not wise to embark on a severe fast without supervision. While 40 days and 40 nights did Our Lord the world of good it may be too ambitious of us mortals. A far simpler way to naturally de-clutter the body is to look to Mother Nature and follow her lead. Eating foods that mirror nature’s energy shift by growing upwards, over the ground is the most helpful way you can assist your liver to do what it does best - detoxification and nourishing the blood. Celery, rhubarb, spring onions, leeks, young green leaves including dandelion and nettle leaves and asparagus will soon be coming into season. These foods are rich in fibre, vitamins and chlorophyll and are most beneficial for dispelling toxins. The spring diet is lighter than Winter so begin to reduce heavy foods such as red meats, starchy carbohydrates, preserved foods and dairy foods for now. Replace with lighter, more digestible proteins found in fresh fish, eggs, beans and seeds. Sprouted seeds are particularly beneficial right now as they capture the true essence of Spring and supply the highest amount of vitamins, minerals and enzymes than any other food, nourishing and strengthening the whole body. Introduce a little raw food now by adding freshly chopped young greens, scallions and herbs to soups, vegetable stews and warm bean salads. Nettle and dandelion teas are perfect for Spring as they cleanse the blood and support detoxification process. The ill effects sometimes experienced by those who go from a heavy, dead, unhealthy diet to one that is clean, bright and green can be off-

putting and be the cause of many set-backs and failures. Crankiness, cravings, anger and agitation are some of the emotional “side-effects” of Liver energy. The foods of Spring provide the antidote to both the physical and emotional challenges that arise this time of year! Despite having access to all kinds of ingredients from around the globe all year long, that familiar plant growing in your own back garden right now may just be what your body is yearning. It is true that despite our advanced education and understanding of world-wide affairs, we have disregarded the value of our natural environment and its relevance to our health and well-being. Just as the Sun and stars align with the Seasons, so do our physical and emotional bodies align with Nature around us, so quit fighting it and go with the flow! A new FITFOOD Spring Health programme has just started in Dingle for those who would like to learn more about seasonal eating for greater, all-round health benefits. Guided by Nature, tradition and science (and a few pagan witches and Chinese philosophers!) this programme puts right what has gone wrong with modern eating and makes it easy to incorporate healthy, seasonal food into your every day menu. It is not fad dieting, extreme detoxing or calorie counting, but a sustainable, natural way of choosing what is right for you right now. Losing fat, feeling energized and frolicking with the lambs is an added bonus of going with flow this Spring just as Nature intended! Excerpts From A Dingle Diary By Ted Creedon Monday, January 26, 1987. Weather still dry and fair. Farmers are taking advantage of the fine spell to spread fertiliser and slurry. Spent a tough few hours digging up the roots of an old tree in the back garden. Went to art class but only two people present so if it doesn’t improve we’ll have to pack it in.

Tuesday, January 27.

between members of the organisation. Her husband was wounded in a shootout with gardaí in Clare almost three years ago. He is currently serving a ten-year sentence in Portlaoise prison for murder. A Catholic nun was stabbed to death in a homeless shelter in New York this week.

Sunday, February 1.

Weather fair and fine with easterly wind. The General Election campaign is still very subdued - just a few posters going up around Dingle proclaiming ‘Dessie can do It’ in reference to the Progressive Democrats leader Dessie O’Malley. The Fianna Fáil posters proclaim that ‘ There is a better Way’. The juxtaposition of these two slogans and signs is amusing. It reminds me of two side-by-side advertising posters seen in London years ago - one stated ‘ Go to work on an Egg’ while an adjacent one said ‘ It’s quicker by Rail’. Local Councillor Breandán MacGearailt has his posters up also but no Fine Gael or Labour ones yet. Whatever the outcome, the Election will be won or lost on TV. The focus will be on unemployment and on how to improve the lives of the 250,000 social welfare recipients.

It was strange to look out this morning at a wet countryside after all the fine weather last month. Gerald Griffin of Upper Main Street died recently. His relations were clearing out the house and disposing of rubbish etc. and local restaurateur Gerry Lee found a brass object in the discarded material at the back of the house. He took it away, polished it up and hung it up as an ornament in his car. Jed Bowler, who is a Regular Army man stationed in Dingle, spotted the object and recognised it as a 60-year old hand grenade! The army bomb disposal team came and took the grenade to Beenbawn strand for disposal. However, they were afraid of bringing down part of the cliff so they took it to Inch Strand. A gambler in Reno, Nevada, won almost five million dollars in a casino slot machine.

Monday, February 2.

Weather remains very dry with very little rain this month. Went to carpentry class in the CBS tonight. Paid the £18 fee . It’s been a year since the space shuttle Challenger exploded killing all seven astronauts on board.

The kids are home from school because of the ‘flu. Went to art class tonight. Three others showed up so the teacher decided to do private lessons from next week costing £2 per person per night. We spent most of tonight examining and commenting on each others work. Sad to hear of the death of the thriller writer Alastair Maclean (64) whose numerous books were made into very successful films such as The Guns of Navarone and Where Eagles Dare. Britain has ten years left before ending its occupation of Hong Kong which will be taken over by China in 1997

Thursday, January 29. Still fine and dry but the cold east wind persists. Some farmers are burning heather and furze on the hills. Fianna Fáil launched their election manifesto which seems to promise nothing. The Fianna Fáil candidates in this area are Breandán MacGearailt, John O’Leary and John O’Donoghue. The Youth Club magazine meeting was cancelled again. America has banned its citizens from travelling to Lebanon because of so many people or different nationalities being kidnapped there recently.

Saturday, January 31. Fine sunny day again but that cold east wind continues. Bought 4-stone bag of Kerrs Pinks in Garveys for £5.85. The wife of INLA gunman Dominic McGlinchey was shot dead in her Dundalk home. It seems there’s some internal feud 14 West Kerry Live

Tuesday, February 3. Took out a couple of books from the library. The council have placed two benches outside the building. Special branch officers raided the offices of BBC Scotland over the weekend and removed a series of planned programmes called Secret Society because they might breach national security regulations.

Thursday, February 5. Attended a meeting of the Youth Club magazine committee in the presbytery tonight. We’ve gotten off to a very slow start this year but we’re beginning to move at last.

The next edition of the Dingle Echo should be in the shops by Easter. The American entertainer Liberace has died aged 67. He once successfully sued the Daily Mirror over an article which described him as a homosexual.

Friday, February 6. Drove to Tralee after breakfast. Bought four dozen bricks from John A Woods in Clash for 20p each. Am planning to build a fireplace next week. Left a tax rebate application into the local Revenue office. The printers’ strike at the Murdoch newspapers in Britain is over after a year. Last year the newspaper group moved to a new site in Wapping, London. Over 5,000 printers disputed the move and were sacked by Murdoch. Unions called for a strike but have now admitted defeat. Technology has changed and hot metal printing can’t keep up with computers.

Saturday, February 7. Weather wet and muggy all afternoon. Attended the funeral of Louis Graham who died on Thursday night, shortly after voting in the General Election. This is the first time that the infirm and invalides have been able to vote from their homes. Joe and Nora Joyce came for the evening and evening of good food and good humour.

I went back to my Kilkenny roots to get married. Fr. Brennan the parish priest from Paulstown married us. Our reception took place in a hotel called The Clubhouse in Kilkenny. After leaving the hotel that evening to go on our honeymoon I changed out of my going away clothes into a dirndl skirt and blouse in a hay field. The weather was gorA Snapshot Of My Wedding geous. The first night of our honeymoon we stayed in Cruise’s Hotel in Limerick for one night before heading on to Kerry to Kruger’s Guesthouse. Kruger gave a week in the guesthouse to Paddy as a wedding gift. We went touring for a week. Afterwards we went back to Dublin where we had 3 children and stayed there for 30 years before returning to Ballyferriter in 1984. I’m here ever since. Paddy passed away in 2011 and is buried in Dún Úrlann.

The Jewel in the Peninsula David Frizelle Going back to 1982, I had just bought a site in Curraduff, Camp, alongside the Dingle Way after it crossed the Finglass river. I was always being interested in hill walking , so I joined the Committee under the chairmanship of the late Tom Finn. Tom could be described as the ‘guru’ of hill walking in both West Kerry and later in North Kerry for he had the vision, and the initiative to see that in the future hill walking would become the popular pastime it is today. Initially there were two separate committees, one for construction and maintenance of the path from Tralee to Dingle, and one for west of Dingle. Later on towards the end of the 80’s, it became one Dingle Way Committee, which made administration and application for funding to the various government bodies, that much simpler. For the next twenty years it was a question of maintenance, and ‘keeping the show on the road’ with very limited funding. Formalities were kept to a minimum, ‘flexible arrangements’ were made with local landowners and farmers when problems arose and the Committee met 4 times each year in different locations around the peninsula. At this point, as Chairman during that period, I would like to thank the staff of Kerry County Council, for their ongoing support of our endeavours, both financially and with the supply and storage of materials for the never ending task of maintenance, repairs and modifications to the pathway.... the weather in West Kerry can be a hard task master! Also the staff at Údarás and the Regional Structural Scheme for their ongoing hard work and support. Over the past ten years, hill walking has become much more popular, if the number of foreign walkers are anything to go by. Local interest has also caught on and this was reflected in the large attendance at the AGM held in Dingle on 24th Jan. With a new website, a revised brochure, a new constitution, and a new committee under the capable leadership of John Ahern, one could say that the Dingle Way has finally, ‘come of age’ and is now firmly embedded in the infrastructure of the

THE

Dingle peninsula. We hear a lot these days about the need to reinvigorate life in our rural communities, and in the Dingle Way we have a blue print for doing it. Over 80%1 of the walkers using the path are now from overseas, all spending money in the local community for accommodation, food, and social activities. Hopefully the appropriate Government bodies will take note of what local initiative and co-ordinated effort can do by making use of an asset within the community! Finally, but most importantly , a word of appreciation to the landowners and farmers, who have to ‘live with’ the Dingle Way on a daily basis, only for them giving permission for the path to go through their land, there would have been no Way in the first place. Secretary Brigid O’Connor made a useful suggestion at the end of the AGM to the effect that, a small portion of the grants to farmers and landowners should be allocated to the maintenance and upkeep of an amenity which may pass through their land. The farmer/landowner is very often the best custodian of the local environment. We see how cities and national capitals have grown over the past number of years, with an ever widening gap between the rural and urban communities. There may come a time, in the not too distant future when those, ‘set in authority over us’, let it be in Dublin or in Brussels, could question the necessity of giving grants to farmers and landowners. If it can be shown that a portion of this money goes towards the upkeep and development of rural amenities, such as the Dingle Way, for the physical and mental benefit of the urban dweller, the policy makers might be forced to modify their plans accordingly! Finally, it was through the Dingle Way that I got to know the highways and byways and the various communities on the peninsula. Many thanks for making my time in the Kingdom interesting and enjoyable, (and at times turbulent, but never boring !). - David Frizelle, Riverstown, Birr, Co. Beachairi Chorca Dhuibhne Celebration of St Gobnait and St Valentine. To celebrate St Gobnait and St Valentine both patron saints of our beloved bees. Beachairi Chorca Dhuibhne are hosting a social evening on the 8th of February at the Beehive Theatre in Dingle at 8 o clock. More Than Honey .... A documentary on bees will be shown on the night. This isn’t just a pretty nature documentary: it’s a grim warning. The world’s bee population is sharply declining, and the consequences are potentially grim. Einstein reportedly remarked that if bees died out, mankind would not survive more than four years. Imhoof takes that quote at face value and spells it out in detail: without bees, a huge percentage of flowers and trees would become extinct because they rely on bee pollination; so does up to a third of what we humans eat. "Even if you have no interest in bees I would recommend going to see this film. It’s entertaining simply from a character-based perspective, as well as being visually magnificent. I promise that you won’t see bees in the same way afterwards" - Scientific America Members are free and non members it's €5 or a donation of your choice. The club will be available afterwards to anyone that may have an interest in beekeeping or even supporting the bees in your own garden and environment . We can all play our part you don't have to keep bees to make a difference. You are all most warmly invited to attend. If you wanna inquire further, give Juli a buzz on 086-8337733

Green Lentils, Sausage and Butternut Squash Stew Mark Murphy Dingle Cookery School

pieces

This is a fabulous stew that’s tasty and easy to make. Lentils are so versatile and you can add them to so many dishes. The variety you need for this dish is green lentils or if you can find Le Puy lentils you will find they have a creamer taste. For the lentils themselves all you have to do to prepare them before you cook is to give them a little wash and have a quick look to see if there is any small stones hiding among the lentils. It was only when I trained as a chef that I really discovered green lentils. I remember the first restaurant that I worked in as a commis chef I got to cook lentils almost every second day. Since then I always try to cook them in a similar way. I slowly cook some onions, garlic, diced carrots in butter and then add the lentils with some warm stock and then cook them over a simmer for about 35 minutes or so until there is a little bite left in them. A little bacon in there is always welcome too if you wish. It goes without saying that you should try to find a really good sausage and generally not a breakfast sausage. The sausage I love for this is Micilín Muc’s Cumberland sausage. It has a small hint of spice and plenty of flavour but most importantly it has a high pork content. Match all of this with a some butternut squash and cook it for a little while and you will have a delicious stew that can be served with some creamy mash potato. As you read this recipe you will notice that I take my time cooking all the initial ingredients slowly in stages. This is one simple way to add flavour to your cooking. It will only take you an extra few minutes more and you don’t have to stand over the pot, just give it a stir every two or three minutes. By letting each ingredient cook for a few minutes before adding the next brings a subtle flavour out of each ingredient, giving more depth of flavour to the overall dish.

knob of butter salt and pepper 2 tomatoes, peeled, deseeded and diced small bunch of parsley chopped Method Put a large casserole pot on the stove over a low heat, add a little butter and then the onions. Add a pinch of salt and let this cook for about 5 minutes. You can now add the garlic and the thyme and cook this for another few minutes. Add in the carrots next and once the carrots have had a few minutes to soften add the butternut squash. Give the pot a gentle stir and let it cook for about 5 minutes. Add in the sausage then add the tomato purée. Allow the tomato purée to cook to help remove some of the bitterness. Season with some salt and pepper. Add the lentils to the mix and then add the warm stock and bay leaf. Turn the heat up for about 5 minutes. Once it starts to boil turn it down to a gentle simmer for about 35

FLAG SOUTH (Coastal communities of Cork) FLAG SOUTH EAST (Coastal communities of Wicklow, Wexford and Waterford) FLAG NORTH EAST (Coastal communities of Louth, Meath and Dublin) Ireland’s seven Fisheries Local Action Groups (FLAGs), invite applications for grant aid under the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund Operational Programme 2014 -2020, co-funded by the European Union and Irish Government. Project proposals must be consistent with the FLAG Local Development Strategy for the FLAG area in question and address one or more of the following themes: – Adding value to fishery and aquaculture products – Creating/maintaining jobs in coastal areas – Promoting innovation in fisheries and aquaculture – Supporting diversification within coastal communities – Lifelong learning, attracting young people into fisheries, aquaculture, and marine related careers and activities – Promoting social well-being and cultural heritage in fisheries and aquaculture areas – Promoting best environmental practices

Specific priorities have been developed from these themes for each FLAG area. Applicants should therefore consult the relevant FLAG strategy for the specific priorities for their area. It is also highly recommended that projects are discussed in advance with your local BIM FLAG Coordinator. It is anticipated that project evaluations will be carried out by the FLAGs on a quarterly basis, however budgetary constraints may mean that available funds are limited for evaluations held later in the year. To guarantee inclusion in the first scheduled evaluation, applications must be received no later than 5pm on the 15th of March 2017. This programme operates on an open call basis and will remain open to applications until otherwise advertised on www.bim.ie and the projected FLAG website. Programme details, including FLAG Local Development Strategies and application forms will be available on the BIM website www.bim. ie from the 2nd of February 2017. Completed applications should be sent to: P.O. BOX 9799, C/O Caroline Curraoin, FLAG Investment Coordinator, Bord Iascaigh Mhara, Crofton Road, Dún Laoghaire, County Dublin, A96E5A0

Ag Machnamh sa Mharrakesh Mossie Ó Scanláin

sé dúinn go raibh sé fhéin ceithre fichid bliain d’aois. Dúirt sé leis, go raibh a lán camaill aige. Cheistíos é fén mó camall a thabharfadh sé dom ar Helen? Dhein sé gealgháire, ag rá ná raibh a dhóthain sa bhfásaigh, agus an ceart aige!!! Rugamar láimh ar a chéile go ceanúil, láimh gur dhóigh leat a bhí déanta de leathar. Cuireann sé an t-amhrán ‘The Turf Man from Ardee’ i gcuimhne dom: I shook that steely hand of his, and I bowed respectfully, and I hope that I will meet again, the turf man from Ardee. Go maire sé céad sa cúig!

Is ait é, uaireanta téimid siar ar bhóithrín na smaointe, gan aon ní ach focal a thagann go dtí an gcluais nó rud éigin a chífeá agus b’fhéidir uaireanta eile, nuair a bheifeá suite go socair ciúin ag machnamh seal leat féin. Bhuel, a leithéidi sin a thug mise ar an mbóthar so chugat. Eachtróidh mé dhuit. Bhí sé de sheans liom fhéin is lem pháirtí Helen cúpla seachtain a chaitheamh i Morocco san Afraic Thiar Thuaidh le déanaí. Caithfeadh a rá ar dtúis go raibh saghas imní orm imeacht ann, mar go ndúirt cúpla duine liom nárbh aon áit sábháilte é, ach ba chuma sa diabhal, ceannaíodh na ticéadaí agus scaoileamar féidh. An té a bhíonn siúlach bíonn sé scéalach. Landálamar i Marrakesh agus ansan ar aghaidh linn gan aon chasadh siar!

Bhuel anois, ar deireadh, ag tagairt do bhóithrín na smaointe, rugadh mise i mBaile an Lochaigh, ach táim lonnaithe i Lios Póil anois. Is cuimhin liomsa Céit Shéamuis Mhéraí, tar éis di an lá go léir a bheith caite sa ghort aici ag baint nó ag cur phrátaí nó ag ceangal choirce. Agus í ar an gcasán abhaile tráthnóna, seacht cinn de bha roimpi amach, beart luachra nó coirce ar a drom aici agus í ag tarrac in airde ar deich mbliana is trí fichid. Is cuimhin liom Meaig Taimí, an aois chéanna, agus í ag cnochairt mhóna istigh sa Chom. Tá áit istigh sa Chom go dtugann siad Cnapán Mháire Mhichíl air. Ní cuimhin liom í siúd, ach ansan isteach sa Chom a thugadh sí a gabhair ar théadán is cordaí ó Chathair Scoilibín. Is cuimhin liom mo sheana-uncail Maras agus é thall sa ghort ag briseadh chloch le hord agus é trí mbliana is ceithre fichid. Beannacht Dé leo. Is mór an phribhléid dom a bheith tógtha suas ina measc – daoine áille, macánta ar nós muintir Mhorocco. San luaite agam, bhaineamair amach an fásach, ach sin scéal do lá eile. Ag féachaint romhainn, má sea, bead fhéin is Roibeard Ó Brosnacháin in éineacht libh ag trácht ar chursaí an phobail i Lios Póil i rith na bliana seo, agus táimid ag súil go mór le bheith libh ar ardán Chorca Dhuibhne Beo. Idir an dá linn, bímis ag caint is ag comhrá le chéile!

Áit chun bualadh le chéile (meeting place) an bhrí atá le Marrakesh – cathair mhór dhiamhair go bhfuil daonra milliún inti, cathair nuathógtha is ea í atá lán d’óstáin. Tá an tseanachathair ann fós ag dul siar na céadta bliain agus falla timpeall uirthi . Is ansan istigh a thosnaíonn an hurlamaboc – ná bí ag caint ar dhaoine is glór, ceannach is díol, smúit is tobac, na héinne ag iarraidh a n-earraí fhéin a dhíol ar an méid is mó dá mb’fhéidir leo a tharrach amach as do phóca. Chuir sé lá an aonaigh sa Daingean i gcuimhne dhom, cad é útamáil a bhíodh ann, daoine ag bualadh bos is ag screadaíl ar a chéile i bPáirc an Aonaigh, agus ansan thuas i Sráid na nGabhar agus na cairteacha ar thaobh na sráide ag díol éadaí is bróga is rudaí eile, n’fhéadfá siúl tharstu gan focal sa chluais uatha. Is cuimhin liom fear amháin go speisialta ag díol éadaí, agus d’ardódh sé in airde gúna nó treabhsar agus is é an port a bhíodh aige ná: “Never wears, never tears, never fades. Buy it for him, he will love you for it!” Ach is cuma san, tar éis cúpla lá i Marrakesh bhogamair linn i dtreo Fásach an tSahára. Bhí sé uair an chloig tiomána romhainn amach le dul ansúd. Tá dearúd déanta agam ar an méid agus ainmneacha na mbailte go ngabhamair tríothu ar ár slí, ach táimse á rá leat go bhfeacamair bochtanas – asail, capaill is múileanna, ba dhóigh leat go raibh na cnámha ag polladh a gcraiceann, daoine á marcaíocht isteach is amach ós na bailte. Bhí margadh ins gach aon bhaile ar an slí. Daoine ag rith id dhiaidh, “please come into my shop” mar phaidir acu. Chonac mná agus bearta móra luibheanna nó adhmaid ar a ndrom acu. Mná eile ar thaobh an chnoic, téadáin timpeall ar a bhástaí, cordaí ag rith ós na téadáin agus b’fhéidir seacht nó hocht de ghabhair ceangailte díobh siúd. Chonac fear amháin agus é ag treabhadh le dhá asal. Stopamar. Bhí treoraí in éineacht linn. Chuamar isteach sa ghort chuige. Bhíos ag caint is á cheistiú tríd an dtreoraí. Ní raibh aige de chéachta ach spreota adhmaid agus blúire beag stáin timpeall ar sprioc mar shoc. Láimh amháin ar an spreóta agus an láimh eile ar an srian. Dúirt sé liom go raibh asal amháin leathchéad bliain agus gurb é an t-asal eile a mhac!( mac an assail)!! D’inis 28 West Kerry Live

Scríbhneoireacht Chruthaitheach i bPobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne Mé Féin agus mo Cheantar Mise Katie Ní Bhriain. Cónaím ar an Muirígh, Baile na nGall, Trá Lí, le mo Mham, mo Dhaid, mo dheartháir agus mo ghadhar, Lily. Áit ana-dheas is ea é. Tá sé ciúin agus tá sé díreach in aice leis an dtráigh. Bhog mé ó Luimneach go dtí an Mhuiríoch nuair a bhíos beag – ní raibh mé ach ceathair. Bhí Luimneach ana-ghnóthach agus bhí daoine i ngach áit. Dá mbeadh an rogha agam fanacht ar an Muiríoch nó bogadh ar ais go Luimneach, d’fhanfainn ar an Muiríoch mar is breá liom é. Tá mo chairde go léir agus mo theaghlach ann. Téim ag siúl le mo ghadhar, Lily, gach lá. Is aoibhinn léi siúl ar an dtráigh, chomh maith. Tá sí dhá bhliain d’aois. Is Bichon Frise í agus fuair mise agus mo dheartháir í i gcomhair ár lá breithe nuair a bhíomar dhá bhliain déag d’aois. Bhí sí ar cheann de na bronntanaisí is fearr a fuaireamar riamh. Ben is ainm do mo dheartháir. Is cúpla sinn. Tá an breithlá céanna agamsa, ag mo dheartháir agus ag mo Dhaid. Oibríonn mo Dhaid mar shiúinéir agus is príomhoide í mo Mham. Tá súíl agam go mbeidh ana-chuid blianta maithe againn inár gcónaí ar an Muirígh agus is dóigh liom go mbeidh. - Katie Ní Bhriain, Bliain 1 Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne *** Mé Féin agus mo Cheantar Is mise Liam Ó hÓgáin. Tá cúpla oileán gar dó. ‘Sé an Blascaod Mór an t-oileán is cáiliúla díobh. Tagann anachuid cuairteoirí ar cuairt go dtí an tOileán i rith an tsamhraidh. Tá café agus siopa beag potadóireachta sa pharóiste. Bíonn leabhartha agus rudaí eile ar díol ann. Tá Tráigh a’ Choma i gCom Dhíneoil ana-dheas ach níl cead snámh ann mar tá na tonnta ana-dhainséarach. Tá scoil amháin i nDún Chaoin, bunscoil cháiliúil darb ainm Scoil Dhún Chaoin. Bhíos ag freastal uirthi anuraidh ach táim ag freastal ar Phobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne anois. Níl a lán crann i nDún Chaoin ach tá roinnt mhaith plandaí beaga ar nós fiúise agus feileastram dearg. Tá bóithrín beag taobh lem thigh agus tá ualach sméara dubha ag fás ann. Dheineas píóg leis na sméara. Chuireamar prátaí san earrach agus bhaineamar sa bhFómhar iad. Nature’s Knowledge Healing with Herbs

Preparations and dosage Best taken as a tincture preparation or in capsule form

Deirdre Daly

Tincture dosage 2 to 4 ml three times daily 1 tsp of tincture can be taken every two hours for acute infections

Echinacea Echinacea angustifolia

Safety Considerations;

Parts used; The Root and the flower Family; Asteracea Echinacea root Echinacea angustifolia radix has become a mainstream herbal remedy and it well deserves its popularity. It is an excellent immune stimulant and antibiotic not just for the respiratory system but also as a systemic remedy for viral and bacterial infections. This can only be a big plus for this lovely plant particularly when we consider how viral attacks are immune to antibiotics and how antibiotic overuse has lessened the effectiveness of the medication for many bacterial conditions. Echinacea is a beautiful plant with a rich purple flower and is a hardy plant even in cold climates. Though the flowers can be used it is the root that is used in medicinal herbalism. The flower or the aerial parts are considered inferior and may be more likely to cause allergic reactions (see safety considerations below). The plant can be grown from seed and if at the end of the growing season you leave a few of the plants behind to dry naturally you can harvest the seeds to use the following year by cutting a few fully mature and ripened flower heads, leaving a nice long stem. Then hang the flowers upside down with the flower heads enclosed in paper bag which allow them to release their seeds into the bag when they are ready. Once the seeds have fallen, remove the outer chaff and spread the seeds out on a newspaper for 10-12 days to finish drying. They will keep in the refrigerator in a glass jar with a tight fitting lid for up to a year. The plant does not like too much moisture so will not thrive in wet soggy soil. Echinacea has a long history starting from the American Plains Indians where it was extremely highly regarded. One of its common names was ‘Snakeroot’ because it was the herb they trusted most to save them from snakebite poisoning. They also used Echinacea root widely for infectious diseases and externally to promote the healing of wounds. The plant was later adopted by white settlers in America and by the 1880s the plant was used by medics for infections, inflammations and poisonings. Many studies have been carried out on this plant and today it is regarded as one of the primary remedies for ridding the body of microbial infections, which can be of viral or bacterial origin. The herb’s ability to raise the levels of white blood cells promotes the immune response to deal with many illnesses and the research supports the use of Echinacea in a variety of conditions. While it is an excellent respiratory remedy particularly acute respiratory tract infections the herb also works on a systemic level and can be taken for local or systemic infection in the body and can be used to treat septicaemia and poisoning from food, plants and animals. Echinacea used in conjunction with other herbs particularly for systemic infection can be very effective. Some examples include, Echinacea together with astragalus Astragalus membranaceus for the immune system, with elderberry Sambucus nigra for viral infections and with dandelion Tarax officinalis and burdock Arctium lappa to help clear congestion in the lymph system. As a lymphatic Echinacea can be used to treat swollen glands and for many skin conditions such as eczema, boils, rosacea and acne. Echinacea is a truly potent medicine particularly when combined with other herbs. The more I research and work with this plant the more it reveals its virtues and well deserves its place as a mainstream herbal 32 West Kerry Live

remedy.

In 2008 the MHRA passed a recommendation that Echinacea not be given to children under 12 years of age as an uncontrolled study reported that 5 people already prone to allergies had an allergic reaction to the plant. Ultimately this finding comes under the umbrella of a ‘very rare occurrence’ and though no such allergic reaction was found with children, as a safety precaution children under 12 are advised against using this herb. There is however ongoing controversy in this regard. May cause allergic reaction in people sensitive to plants from the Asteracea family. Theoretically it may interfere with immune suppressant medication so for people with auto immune conditions it is advisable to check with a herbalist first. Caution: Do not self-diagnose or self-treat for serious or long-term conditions without first consulting a qualified herbal or medical practitioner. The Romance of Fly Fishing

be lading on the water wide eyed and unintentional. Like Buddhists maybe.

Colin Sheeran

Getting these little things done so far ahead, it makes his hopes for this season tangible. Hopes that there will be a conspiracy in his favour. A great collusion to his benefit. That this will be the season. The weather. Not rain turning the river brown, in spate and unfishable for weeks on end. Not freezing. Not too sunny. Wildlife. Hatches, migration, patterns, cycles in sync this time. In harmony with his narrow needs. To produce a day of days or maybe even days of days.

Romance blooms on the flower of fly fishing in winter, far away from the water’s edge. Somewhere near you there is a fisherman putting a red mark on his new 2017 calendar. March 17th. Start of the fly fishing season in many places. This is the time of year. For planning. For deciding to give it a better go this year. For being more organised. If he’s off to a good start, he has already located where, down the back of the shed he left all the gear last October. He meant to come back and clean it up, store it properly for the Winter, not have it in a heap but there you go. The ol’ time flies. Anyhow, he has it now. Out and cleaned. Aired. And split up differently for the new season. A new layout. Dry flies, wet flies, a section just for May flies. Next month, definitely before the season starts, he will learn properly about the life cycle of a fly and learn the proper names. Like an adult. Start thinking of them in Latin maybe, not by colour. He has promised himself to set this time aside, to put a better sheen on things. He has been improving, you know. Clean the lines. Stretch them out, off the reels. Loosen them, let them breathe. Try and erase their memories, their attachments. They should

The water teeming with life, his eye in, his sense tuned. In it. A part of it. Being in the river is a big difference in fly fishing. In it. In natures domain, part of something bigger. Surrendered to nature’s rhythm, not trying to bend everything to his beat. Accepting. Submersion. Paying attention. Who knew that paying attention was such a big part of fishing? It reads like common sense but that’s because you think you pay attention all the time in real life. You don’t. You never do. Not like this where you step in at dawn and get one, two things arranged and then click, someone is talking about lunch. Relative time. Nostalgia and nature. Having something to do but having nothing to do. It’s a seductive mix. There’s bits of tools too, knots, a bit of know how, things it feels like a man should know. Job satisfaction, getting something right. Learning something on purpose when past the age of reason. And sometimes there’s fish too. Some days it is epic, trying to squeeze a universe of intention into a rod and a flick. A lie, a deception, if told beautifully enough. Constructed scientifically then presented artistically. The wind, the water, the man, the fly, the fish. Sometimes it can be just right and the lie can be swallowed. And then there’s a fight. Always shocking in contrast to the peace of the previous. Brain in to body, mind out to muscle. It’s the time of year. The time of year for thinking about fishing. When the promise and the anticipation is unfettered by reality, romance blooms far away from the water’s edge. West Kerry Live 33

The Dingle Walking Festival

The 7th annual Dingle Walking Festival takes place this year from Friday 17th to Sunday 19th February. The festival attracts a whole host of adventure seeking walking enthusiasts, not just from Kerry or indeed Ireland, but from all over Europe and even visitors from America. The festival is a fun way for people to meet new friends, learn a little Irish and take in the breath-taking views of the Dingle Peninsula. There are a number of walks to choose from which include, Mount Brandon and Conor Pass for a fee of €20. The fee will cover transport, water, insurance and a packed lunch provided by Garvey's Supervalu, Dingle. The festival begins with the Night Walk at 6pm on Friday 17th departing from the Dingle Brewing Company on the Spa Road. All those who take part in this walk are asked to make a small donation, which will go toward the Dingle Coast and Cliff Rescue Service. After the Night Walk which also finishes at the Brewery, participants can unwind with a pint of Crean's Lager afterwards. All of the walks are guided by experienced members of the walking community, so you know you're in great hands. Festival organiser, Colm Bambury says, "To take part in any of the walks the appropriate clothes must be worn and walking boots are compulsory." The festival boosts the economy in Dingle and a lot of tourists return every year to take part. Walking is fast becoming a top recreational activity, and it is easy to see why. The benefits from this aerobic exercise help to maintain a healthy weight, strengthen muscle and bone, improve balance and coordination, prevent or manage a variety of health conditions, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease and high blood pressure, not to mention the obvious mental benefits to being out in the fresh air in beautiful surroundings. Colm Bambury says, “Weather permitting the walks will take place according to plan, however, slight changes may need to be made, if the weather is not the best.” Get out your boots and rain gear and take part in the Dingle walking festival 2017. Good luck to all.

Snáithín Is mó lá agus oíche Shathairn ó scríobhas alt don nuachtán an Kerryman ag tagairt don áis an Fiber Optic nó an snaithín fiber Optic. Le seachtain nó mar sin tá obair ar siúl ar fuaid na háite ag lucht an tSnáithín. Tá sé á ‘cheangal’ le pollaí telefón acu, cad é a dhuine ach d’fhéadfadh go mbeadh an áis seo ar fáil do dhaoine anseo i gCorca Dhuibhne fé dheire na bliana. Agus an obair tosnaithe tá suil agam ná fágfar aon bhaile ar lár. Dar liom gur árd chéim í seo agus go bhfuil ní foláir éisteacht fachta ar na paidreacha agus rudaí eile ná déarfad. Ní amháin go gcabhródh sé seo leis an bpobal ach le lucht turasóireachta maraon le tionscail éagsúla. Is minic a bhraithfá go mbíonn doicheall ar ghnólachtaí dul go dtí aiteanna nách bhfuil an chumarsáid teicneolaíochta caoi ar fáil. Tá súil agam gur sár-cheim maitheasa don gceantar an snaithín optic seo. Beam ag tochrais dréir a chéile. Torthaí Bhí an sean-bhéas ina gcuirtí torthaí scrúdaithe na scoileanna mheasas, caillte curtha, ach ní mar a síltear bítear. Ar nuachtán an ‘Independent’ Dé Domhnaigh seo caite bhí torthaí ‘eile’ fé gach iarbhunscoil sa stát ar fáil. Bhíothas ag tagairt do na scoláirí ón árd teist anuiridh agus cén bóthar a thugadar ortha féin. Tugadh an méid fén gcéad as gach scoil a roghnaigh leanúint lena dtriall, oideachais pioca Ollscoil nó institúití eile oideachais agus oiliúna a bheadh meáite acu. Luadar na coláistí príomháideacha, coláistí stáit agus na colaistí go raibh táillí le díol ag mac-léinn. Ambaice bhí pingíní móra sa bhliain le íoc le coláistí áirithe agus gan amhras scoileanna cónaithe. Tar éis dom súil a chaitheamh ar gach contae ba léir gur iad na Gaeilscoileanna/Choláistí is fearr a chruthaigh ar an meán Pé scéal é bhí na Scoileanna lán Ghaeilge mar Colaiste Íde imeasc na scoileanna ab fhearr a cháiligh. Bhí Gaelcholaiste Chiarraí i dTrá Lí ar fheabhas ar fad maraon le scoil nua Chaisleán an Ghriaghaire agus bhí Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne go diail chomh maith. Bhí cosanairde chun na nOllscoile ar mhicléinn Scoil Mhainistir Ghleann Stáil i Luimneach, mar a gcuaidh gach mac leinn go dtí Ollscoil nó institúit eile oideachais nó oiliúna. An costas aíochta ná €18,950 sa bhliain. I gcoláiste Clongowes Wood, i gChill Dara b’í an táille cónaithe ná €18,950; Rockwell i dTiobrad Arainn €12,500, Coláiste Naomh Colomba i mBleá Cliath, €22,350; Coláiste Wesley i mBleá Cliath, €14,450, Scoil Alexandra i mBleá Cliath €17,891 agus Coláiste Íde €6,550. Sin Scoilelanna Cónaithe. Tá scoileanna nó colaistí ann a ghearrann táille ar scoláirí lae. Seo cupla sampla, King’s Hospital i mBleá Cliath. €6,895, Sutton Park i mBleá Cliath €7,900. sa bhliain: Castleknock €5,999. Is trua nár chuireadar euro eile leis an dtáille. Nílim meáite tú chrá le figiúirí ach nách bhfuil éagsúlacht mór ins na táillí. Má bhíonn aga agat is fiú féachaint ar na torthaí ar fuaid na tíre agus a thuiscint go bhfuil an- scoileanna againn anso i gCiarraí. Eisceacht nó an ea, Coláiste Pobail Thrá Lí ina roghnaigh 95% a dhein scrúdú na hardteistiméireachta leanúint lena gcuid oideachais agus oiliúna ach, is 4% a chuaidh chun na hOllscoile.Tás ag am saol go gcaithfidh scoláirí móra achfuineacha a bheith againn agus ceardaithe oilte sa teicneolaíocht agus iad taobh le taobh. Is fiú moladh a thabhairt dos na scoileanna lán Ghaeilge agus dóibh siúd go bhfuil formhór na ndaltaí anois ag dul i dtreo na hOllscoile nó na teicneolaíochta agus an cheárdaíochta. Fadó dála an scéil tugtaí ainm gach scoláire agus a thorthaí don Mean Teist agus don Ard Teist. Má fuair an dalta seacht onóir bheadh gach abhar luaite. Mo ghraidh an créatuir ná raibh aon suim sa léann aige nó aici. Ní déarfainn gur chuir sé aon mhór mhairg ortha. Cuimhním ar an bpáiste a bhí ag cur in úil dá cháirde gur é a athair féin an tiománaí ab fhearr mar go raibh 8 phoinnte [pionóis] tiomána fachta aige.

Why The Levator Scupula Muscle Can Be A Pain In The Neck The Levator Scapulae muscles are located on either side of the neck. They originate on the four upper vertebrae of the cervical spine (neck) and insert, or attach, to the scapula, also known as the shoulder blade at the superior, medial border. These two muscles are involved in elevation, downward rotation and abduction of the scapulae. They are also involved in flexion and extension of the cervical spine(neck), turning of the neck slightly left and right, along with side bending of the neck left and right. When you wake up in the morning with a crick in your neck, feel a burning pain on the top inner corner of your shoulder blade, or have trouble turning your head to look behind you while driving etc., the culprit may be a Levator Scapula muscle in spasm. The pain can be described as a throbbing, ache, or tightness, and usually presents from the top inner corner of the shoulder blade up along the neck. What Causes Levator Scapula Spasm / Trigger Points? A trigger point is a tight area within muscle tissue that causes pain in that area and/or other parts of the body. The trigger points are shown above as two dark red circles, with the pain referral area also shaded in. Muscle spasm is a tightening of a muscle usually, due to overuse or overstress. It can in itself cause pain and loss of mobility. The following events and activities are likely to activate, or reactivate, tension / pain and trigger points in the levator scapulae. • whiplash from an automobile accident • sleeping on the stomach with the head turned / or sleeping in an odd position • chilling of the muscle during sleep from an air conditioner or draft from an open window • working at a computer with the head turned for long periods • holding a phone between the shoulder & ear 38 West Kerry Live

• carrying a heavy bag with a shoulder strap • use of crutches that are too tall and elevate the shoulder • emotional and mental stress • Working with your arms raised above your head for prolonged periods of time can also irritate the Levator Scapula. To help reduce neck pain, stabilize your shoulder blade when you raise your arm.

Trigger Points

• poor posture with a forward head position puts this muscle under continuous strain causing overuse. Usually the condition settles after a few days if it is only a once off. Proper hands-on deep tissue massage and dry needling, when used together, can be great to settle the condition either in the short term, or if the condition has become more chronic. Also for the long term, correcting posture, stretching and strengthening of the upper back(particularly middle / lower traps, serratus posterior, rhomboids etc.) and the neck muscles(specifically the posterior neck muscles) can help prevent the condition from returning. Posture is key to a healthy neck and spine. Try and sit up straight on a comfortable supportive chair, when at work or at home, allowing the shoulders to relax by using the arm rests of the chair. When at a computer, pull the screen close and try to get it up to eye level (say using books underneath it), so your head doesn’t have to be coming forward. The same applies when driving a car. Pull the seat in close to the steering wheel(within reason),and try to position yourself so the shoulders are relaxed and the head isn’t jutting forward. Activities like reading in bed, playing computer games for hours etc. can really tighten up the levator muscles and are a disaster for thoracic and cervical posture in the long term.

Sceal eile ó Leabharlann an Daingin This issue we take a look at some of the new titles to reach your local library to help ease your passage through the quiet, dull days of late winter and early spring. ‘A Voice In The Night’ is the latest entry in the Inspector Montalbano novels by Andrea Camilleri. Set in sunny Sicily this is crime fiction at it’s best combining murder mysteries with an insightful overview of contemporary Italian society; politics, corruption, the Mafia, illegal immigration and wonderful Sicilian cuisine can all be found here. The Daily Mirror says ‘One of fiction’s greatest detectives and Camilleri is one of Europe’s greatest crime writers’ Inspector Montalbano’s adventures have also been immortalised on screen and DVDs are available to borrow from this library and can also be ordered online through the national catalogue. Cecelia Ahern has been top of the best-selling lists for a few years now and this is likely to continue with her latest offering ‘Lyrebird’. It’s a thoughtful, deeply moving love story; a story of the wild heart in us all and the quiet that lies underneath the world’s noise. According to the Irish Times the book ‘is immersive, escapist, easy to read and satisfying

in it’s fulfilment of romantic criteria.’ The perfect antidote to these long gloomy evenings. ‘Portráidí’ Sa chnuasach álainn lándaite seo tá portráidí de 107 de na scríbhneoiri is aitheanta i saol na Gaeilge, idir údair liteartha agus scríbhneoirí acadúla ar tógadh idir 2009 – 2013 ag Máire Uí Mhaicín agus tá roinnt mhaith acu le feiscint timpeall an cheantair seo, ar ndóigh. De réir Ferdie Mac an Fhailigh. Príomhfheidhmeannach Foras Na Gaeilge ‘ tugann an leabhar seo aitheantas do scríbhneoirí comhaimseartha na Gaeilge agus déannan ceiliúradh orthu’. ‘Alone in Berlin’ a 1947 novel by Hans Fallada was a huge hit when it was translated into English just over six years ago. If you enjoyed that then you must read ‘Nightmare In Berlin’ an autobiographical novel that begins on the day the Second World War ends. Written with Fallada’s distinctive power and vividness it captures the demoralised and desperate atmosphere of post-war Germany in a way that has never been matched or surpassed. Blaisín beag é seo den réimse leathan leabhar agus ábhar eile atá le fáil i Leabharlann An Daingin. Buail isteach chugainn nó gabh ar líne agus bain triail as an acmhainn luachmhar seo. On a day when we were missing 5 regular starters, a superb defensive display earned Castle a cup replay. On a heavy pitch it was the away side that had the lions share of the possession but Castle set out their stall to sit deep and invite Killarney on to try and break them down, and play on the counter. For the most part this tactic was very effective with Killarney restricted to long diagonal balls in the first half and he occasional long range shot. Castle relied on set pieces in the opening half and went close when Steve Speirs flashed a headed effort narrowly wide, while at the other end when Killarney did break through, Shane Kenny was in flying form deputising in goals. Things opened up a little in the second half but again Castle kept their shape and Killarney played around the fringes for the most part. However, in the final stages the away side created a number of good chances hitting the bar with a free and seeing a good opportunity go narrowly over, while Castle’s man of the match Conor Boden was proving impossible to get by, blocking several efforts with some great tackles. In fact Castle could have pinched it when Dominic Spillane won the ball back at the half way line and, playing a one-two with Damien Finn he was through 1v1 but his shot went narrowly wide. Overall, a superb team effort, especially given the number of regulars missing and facing opposition from a higher division. Looking forward to the replay. Team: Shane Kenny; Dominic Spillane; Conor Boden; Ger O Callaghan; Dillon Daniels; Damien McMahon; Damien Finn; Michael John Flynn; Steve Speirs; Patrick O Donoghue & Mícheál O Dowd. Subs: Conor Shannon; David O Brien & Kevin Power. GAA: In what was a closely contested match held at at a sun-drenched Páirc an Caisleán, the home side were defeated by An Gaeltacht by the slimmest of margins. Ógie O Sé opened the scoring with a point for An Gaeltacht. Jimmy O’ Grady replied with a point

and followed this with a well worked goal in the 6th minute. Although An Gaeltacht followed with a succession of points, sterling defensive work throughout the pitch ensured that the sides remained level after 15 minutes. Two goals for the visitors from Tomás Ó Sé and Ógie Ó Sé put them in a commanding position as half time beckoned. Points from Anto Kelliher, Brandon Hoare, Alan Fitzgerald and Timmy Moriarty left Castlegregory trailing by five points at half time. Half time score: Castlegregory 1-6, An Gaeltacht 2-8. Castlegregory had the better of exchanges on the resumption with points from Anto Kelliher and Alan Fitzgerald. Competing for the scores of the day were a long range effort from the left wing by Jordan Quirke and a pointed free from the forty by Alan Fitzgerald. A break-away goal by An Gaeltacht and points from Tomás and Ógie Ó Sé came against the run of play. Continued pressure from Castlegregory resulted in a goal from Timmy Moriarty to leave the minimum between the sides. Time, however, ran out on the home side with An Gaeltacht still ahead. Final Score: Castlegregory 2-13; Castlegregory 3-11. A feature of the day for the home side was the debuts of Minors, Brian Dowling, Jimmy O’ Grady, David Sheehan and Dylan Hoare who all featured well throughout. Well done to all players and panel members on a competitive seasonopener when the Divisional gulf between the teams was inapparent throughout. Castlegregory: David O’ Dowd, Pádraig Rohan, James Galway (David Sheehan half time), Timmy Walsh, Colm Sills (Brandon Hoare 50 mins), Gearoid Fitzgerald, Brian Dowling, Jordan Quirke, Adam O’ Donnell, Anto Kelliher, Timmy Moriarty, Brandon Hoare, Jimmy O’ Grady (Jason Griffin 55 mins), Alan Fitzgerald, Fergus Kerin (Brendan O’ Connor 28 mins). Think Before You Flush

to deal with this type of waste. In a study of over 1,000 Irish people, a shocking 3 in 10 admitted to flushing such items down the toilet. Of these, 58% admitted to flushing baby wipes down the toilet, 40% facial wipes, 26% cotton bud sticks, 24% tampons and 21% cigarette butts. More than half of those who flush these items down the toilet did so simply due to a lack of knowledge. Sewage related litter is one of the largest categories of litter found on our beaches and is considered to be the most offensive. 90% of those surveyed agreed that seeing sewage related litter during a visit to the beach would disgust them while 84% of those surveyed agreed that if they knew that the items flushed down the toilet could end up being discharged into the ocean and could pollute our coastline and cause potential health risks they would not dispose of items in this way. This type of marine litter is totally preventable by simply changing our flushing behaviour.

During the upcoming Storm Festival the Clean Coasts Community will launch their ‘Think Before You Flush’ Community Initiative in Dingle Oceanworld. The launch will take place on Sunday 5th February at 10.45am. Dingle is just one of 9 areas nationwide where the initiative is being rolled out. The programme aims to tackle the problems sanitary products can cause our waste water network and marine environment if flushed down the toilet. As part of the Initiative, educational workshops for schools and businesses as well as community information events will be held to raise awareness of sewage related littering and change poor flushing behaviour. Sanitary items such as cotton bud sticks, face/baby wipes and those items we term as our ‘Dirty Dozen’ should not be flushed down the toilet, entering our waste water treatment network, which is unable

Speaking about the expansion of the Think Before You Flush initiative to 9 Communities Sinead McCoy, Coastal Communities Manager, An Taisce said, “The Think Before You Flush campaign increases education and awareness about sewage related litter, enabling people to realise the consequence of their simple bathroom routine, and preventing items like cotton bud sticks washing up on Ireland’s spectacular beaches.” For more information about Think Before You Flush please visit www. thinkbeforeyouflush.org

We are unsure about what income is included Project4:Layout 1 21/08/2014 16:57 Page 1 in the means test for this payment. For example, will my wife’s student grant be included? Answer Family Income Supplement (FIS) is a weekly tax-free payment for families, including one-parent families, at work on low pay. The combined income of a couple (married, in a civil partnership or cohabiting) is taken into account when your means are assessed for FIS. Supplementary Welfare Allowance

Domiciliary Care Allowance

Foster Child Allowance

Rent Allowance for tenants affected by the de-control of rents

Income from a charitable organisation

Income from providing accommodation to students studying Irish in Gaeltacht areas

income sources and income derived from the use of a car that you own may be assessed (for example as a taxi). The main items counted as income are a couple’s assessable earnings, any extra earned in employment (such as pay for overtime, bonuses, allowances or commission), income

from self-employment, occupational pensions, social welfare payments (apart from those listed above), income from carer’s payments or rental income from the letting of property or land. Further information is available from the Citizens Information Centre below.
